2012 summer bucket list.

in goals,love life,moves

hey, friends!

apparently today is national running day, but i didn’t celebrate. i don’t like to run. and, lucky for me, there was ZERO running in today’s GPP workout. thanks, neil.

IMG 4061

there was a lot of jump roping, though, which was allllmost as fun as running. almost. but really, i had fun doing the side slayer workout.

IMG 4068

it had a lot of different moves and really hit those obliques! i love doing tick tocks and twist punches.. even though they make me dizzy.. check the post for video demos of those moves. i finished in 23:10 thanks to my workout buddy, lil’ kate, pushing me along. you really do work harder when others are there to motivate you. i love it.

i also love that i randomly reconnected with a very, very good friend, monika.  i hadn’t seen her in at least five years! she was doing some health scans at GPP (small world!) and we were able to chat after the class.

IMG 4065

she scanned me–i will talk about that more on another day. i am excited to share what she does with you guys, but i need to learn more first!

i broke in my new le creuset with dinner tonight!

IMG 4077

i made up a recipe using chicken, leek, broccoli, asparagus, and two kinds of potatoes.

IMG 4090

it ended up being delicious (and blogworthy—which is always good, right, ash?) so i will try to type up the recipe sometime soon!

but for now.. i have a list to talk about. the secret is out: i love lists.

my friend and fellow GPPer, ali, recently posted her summer bucket list. i got to thinking about all the things i want to do this summer, and decided to follow her lead and make a bucket list of my own!

image

[pinit]

let’s talk about it!

1.go camping. we LOVE to camp and enjoy the great outdoors, but last summer we didn’t make time for it. i want to head for the hills at least twice this summer. i love everything about camping.. loading up the car, starting a campfire, eating out of the cooler, sleeping in a tent, getting dirty, and—yep—even peeing in a bush. plus, the dogs love it, too!

image heading to goblin valley, june 2010

2. grow a plant. i kill any and all plants i touch. i don’t necessarily want to grow a plant from a seed.. i just want to buy a plant and keep it alive. my thumb is not so green… i need to change that.

3. take a cooking class with marshall. we had a lot of fun taking a cooking class last year and i can’t wait to do it again!

image learning to grill, june 2011

4. visit another country. this one will be checked off the list next month when we head to costa rica! cannot wait.

5. swim. or at least spend time at the pool… i thought about it and realized i didn’t go swimming ONCE last summer. not ONCE. jessica—i know you go all the time. you better call me and make me go with you! water swimming, july 2009

6. buy art. buying artwork for the house is something marshall and i enjoy. hopefully we can find something fun at the arts festival or maybe even in costa rica.

7. have a picnic. complete with basket, blanket, and maybe even ants…

8. cross the monkey bars. okay, this is a big one. actually, this is THE BIGGEST ONE on my whole list. i have never, ever, EVER (in my LIFE) crossed the monkey bars. i can’t do it. i promise. i even tried at the dirty dash on saturday.. no dice. i fell. i don’t know if it is an upper body strength thing, a coordination thing, or a confidence thing. probably a combo of all three.. and i need to figure out how to nail it. as of right now, i’m convinced i need a miracle for this to happen.

9. read a book. i am not a big book reader. i used to be. not anymore. i did read two and a half books (the millenium series) back at the beginning of the year, then i quit. so my goal for summer is to read one. that’s all.. just one.

10. pay it forward. when i am in the starbucks drive through, i try to pay the bill for the person behind me. it’s nice.

11. road trip. this one will be marked off the list in a couple weeks! i am going to st. george with kerryne and amanda! can’t wait.

12. farmers market. this one will be the easiest! we go almost weekly! it starts this saturday but i’ll be out of town. i’m excited to go next weekend, though.

image

13. eat at three new brunch spots. i have three in mind already! gracie’s, em’s, and lazy day cafe.

14. bikram. i have not been in over a year! i love bikram and want to get back to going.. i even have a few paid passes to use up, so i really should go!

15. blogger potluck. woo! i cannot wait for the blogger potluck in the park! it is set for june 30th—details to come. if you are a utah blogger and want in on the action, make sure to email me if you haven’t yet.

16. make coconut ice cream. i haven’t busted out my ice cream maker yet this year! i really enjoy eating coconut ice cream and order it whenever i see it available, so i’d like to try my hand at making it.

17. like my arms. yeah. i hate my arms. hate ‘em. they are big and bulky and blah. we all have hangups on our bodies.. and my hangup is on my darn arms. i need to learn to like them. at least a little bit… working on it.

18. mow the lawn. i have never mowed our lawn. i’ve mowed lawns in the past.. maybe twice or three times in my life. but never at mine and marshall’s place. he’s the lawn mower. i need to step to the plate and take a turn or two!

19. hike. i love hiking! living in utah, there are hikes everywhere. beautiful ones. and i plan to take lots of them this summer.

20. walk the dogs. i’ll be the first to admit that we are lazy dog owners. our dogs go to daycare all day and then laze around on the couch with us at night. they don’t get a lot of walks in. one of the things i love to do with marshall, penny, and randy is walk to the nearby park and play together.

21. ride motorcycle to ruth’s diner. i love ruth’s diner sooo much! when marshall bought his motorcycle, i instantly thought of how great it will be to ride it to sunday brunch at ruth’s up emigration canyon.

22. game night. i have been wanting to host a game night with friends since february! this summer i WILL make it happen. games are fun.

23. wakeboarding. this one may be hard to check off the list since i don’t have a boat… so if anyone in utah could invite me to go wakeboarding this summer, that would be fab. please and thanks.

image wakeboarding, august 2009

24. rock climbing. when i picked up our packets for the dirty dash last week, i saw this HUGE indoor rock climbing area. it was dope. i told marshall that we MUST go. and we will! this summer!

25. bike. i have already done some biking this season, but i plan to do lots more. i love riding my bike.

upload 391 riding bikes, june 2008

26. donate old, unused belongings. ahhH! must. purge. things. i have way too much crap for my own good! it’s bugging me.

27. eat a tin foil dinner. yum. this will happen when i go camping (see #1) but it should also happen at home. they can easily be made on the grill… or maybe we should just build a fire pit in the backyard!

28. go to lagoon. lagoon is an amusement park here in utah. it’s what fun is. no, really, that is their slogan! and we just so happen to be having a company lagoon day in july, so this one will be marked off when we go!

29. enjoy the backyard. our backyard sucks. it is covered with overgrown weeds and dead grass. we don’t like to hang out back there. marshall made a few suggestions about starting a garden or making a cement patio with a fire pit (yay, see #27)—whatever we decide will be better than what we have now! we are getting zero use out of the backyard and that’s lame.

30. make dutch oven peach cobbler. yesss.. i got that le creuset dutch oven for my birthday, and as soon as i swoop some fresh peaches up (see #12) you better believe i will be making my mom’s peach cobbler in that baby!

and there it is.. my summer bucket list. let the fun begin!

Q~ what’s on your 2012 summer bucket list? p.s. if you do a post about your bucket list, please let me know so i can link back!

momma b. June 6, 2012 at 8:51 pm

Love, love, love this post! There are so many things on your bucket list that I would also like to do – maybe we can pal up together and knock out a few fun things :)

I want to ride my bike more – got a helmet and then…..gotta actually get the bike out of the garage!

Wakeboard – I’m on the lookout for a boat before September!

Get my hair cut super duper short – wahoo – I did this today!!!

Love you and I will miss you too xoxoxo!!

Sara June 6, 2012 at 9:15 pm

If you need any book suggestions, let me know! That’s right up my alley. :) Great list!

I want to go back to the camp where I was a camp counselor for three summers and attend a closing campfire. One of the girls in my cabin is now a counselor there and I’d LOVE to see her.

Lindsey June 6, 2012 at 9:20 pm

You have some great ideas on there! I posted mine last week here – http://www.arunningtale.com/2012/05/goodbye-may.html. I cannot wait to hike this summer, we have a trip planned in a few weeks to kick off the list activities!

jen June 6, 2012 at 9:22 pm

monkey bars are freaking hard! i don’t know how i did them as a child because now they just suck. i tried at dirty dash too but by the time i got to them they were pretty muddy and i could barely hold on they were so slick, grimy and gross. gracies is amazing! you’ll love it.

Heather @ Better With Veggies June 6, 2012 at 9:25 pm

i LOVE this list and the idea – what a great way to make sure you don’t let the summer pass you buy. With moving across the country, I think this would be really fun to think of all the stuff I want to experience for my first Colorado summer. I’m definately going to steal this idea – i’ll let you know when I do the post. :)

Katie @ Talk Less, Say More June 6, 2012 at 10:09 pm

what a great idea! I have to think about this…there’s so many different possibilities. They are endless. But I think the Farmer’s Market needs to be on mine because despite the fact that I work next to it, I never seem to actually GO because I either don’t have cash or don’t think i need anything then. Note to self: rearrange grocery shopping days so that I DO need things. ;)

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats June 6, 2012 at 10:10 pm

I love this short term bucket list idea. My actual bucket list seems so far fetched and unrealistic at the moment. lol. I am going to do some major thinking on this. One thing I want to put on my bucket list is a trip to the Farmer’s Market downtown in the Old Market!

Heather (Heather's Dish) June 6, 2012 at 10:22 pm

my summer bucket list is pretty short:

do the insanity workout
keep our yard green
reduce the amount of stuff in our house by half
walk the dogs and let them swim once a week

voila!

Neil June 6, 2012 at 10:45 pm

I’m pissed because you beat my time today. I was trying to scorch it, too. Nice work. I hate you for it. Now, I’m over it.

First thing on my bucket list is to create a better, more full list. I feel way behind. And wholly inadequate after seeing your list. But, here are a couple of ideas off the top of my head that I will do. Not that your list isn’t GREAT. I think I will:

1. Help cure a leper.
2. Tame a wild beast. Then repatriate it back into the wild to show my true love for it.
3. Clean a highway (like, from milepost 1 to wherever it ends).
4. Read all the holy books on earth (bible, Quran, Torah, etc). Weren’t you going to read, like 1 book? I don’t judge you, man.
5. Learn to smell fear in others only to show forth more love and understanding and kindness toward them. To make them not fear me nor any other human.
6. Slow clap for 1 continuous minute after watching a child’s piano recital.
7. Watch a sunrise from the top of a mountain who’s name I cannot pronounce while simultaneously meditating and reading poetry.
8. Learn to pray in all languages, even extinct ones.
9. I will brush up on my 3rd dimension polar coordination and graphing, linear algebra, matrix theory and proofs.
10. I will take a walk in nature listening so deeply and earnestly that I weep uncontrollably. I will then channel this emotion into steely silence and serenity so that I may pour it out as LOVE to all of those who walk past.

Just a couple of thoughts off the top of my head. Hmmm. Maybe now you’ll think twice before crushing my “Slayer” time. Just sayin.

Ingunn June 6, 2012 at 10:52 pm

Hiking, hiking and more hiking for me! I live in Western Washington, and the AMAZING summer hiking we have here is what keeps me going through the November-June Monsoon. ;^)

Carly June 6, 2012 at 11:36 pm

If you travel to Canada, we can go camping AND wake boarding. Clearly Canada is better than Costa Rica. Clearly.

I have a 101 things to do in 1001 days list. I made it last May, and have done 28 things so far. It’s wicked and totally encourages me to learn new things, make time for things, or try things out of my comfort zone!

Khushboo June 6, 2012 at 11:41 pm

LOVE this post! I made a life bucket list a year ago and need to work on crossing things off. Some of the mentions include:

1) Take a sushi making course
2) Travel to the Golden Temple in India
3) Run a half marathon
4) Have a meal with a stranger
5) Take a salsa dancing course

marisa June 6, 2012 at 11:57 pm

#11 to see me and we can #19 and #29 and more! I am always up for being recipient of #26 (my birthday number so it is a sign!) I am planning on coming a day early so we can see you…

Sierra June 7, 2012 at 1:44 am

I put together a ‘Cape Town Bucket List’ with everything I wanted to do before we move and am in the process of working through it. Once we move to the states, I am going to put together a Summer Bucket List…great idea.

Blog is the New Black June 7, 2012 at 1:56 am

LOVE the idea of a bucket list. Mine includes “just make it to the wedding!” ;)

Erica June 7, 2012 at 3:48 am

What a fun post! You can cross the monkey bars- keep us updated on your progress on this one! You should make like a weekly trip somewhere where there is monkey bars and work on it. Play out! If you do this one: 16. make coconut ice cream., please invite me over. My bucket list….Gosh, I’d like to take Kaylin to the beach, dine outside as much as possible, run outside as much as possible, eat ice cream, eat frozen yogurt, teach Kaylin to swim (we signed up for classes already!), Do a night getaway with Josh, celebrate Kaylin’s first birthday. Take Frank for lots of earlier morning walks (when its not super hot), take time to stop and smell the roses

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva June 7, 2012 at 3:49 am

What a great list…mine might have to be a winter bucket list. One thing will be to make some new and interesting soups and try out a different fitness class

RainStorm June 7, 2012 at 4:03 am

I love this idea, but your list is massive!!! I might try writing my own (shorter) list – will let you know what I come up with. So far, my main aim is to find a ballet class/workshop as my regular classes stop over the summer break and I’m enjoying it too much to stop now!

Katie @ Peace Love & Oats June 7, 2012 at 4:37 am

those veggies in your dinner look AMAZING! on my list so far is to just take some “me time”, survive my summer internship, and train for my first marathon! I’d also love to eat at more restaurants with patios here in Chicago, go to at least a couple festivals here, and spend more time with my brother, sister in law and their puppy!

lindsay June 7, 2012 at 4:55 am

can you road trip here? I’ll feed you a tin foil dinner and then we can hike with the puppers. please!!!

Joy June 7, 2012 at 5:07 am

Costa rica is my favorite place on this planet! Specifically friajanes omg very jealous! Second grow aloe – super easy or Christmas cactus

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning June 7, 2012 at 5:59 am

One of my friends (who has 4 kids!!) posted one of these on Facebook a few weeks ago and I thought it was so cute!
I’m game for making one- but I have to tell you- I could basically cut and paste yours, because it will be almost identical. Except I’d go to Hershey Park instead of Lagoon… and I doubt I’ll be visiting another country or riding a motorcycle. :)

Sara u June 7, 2012 at 6:19 am

Come down any weekend and we will take the boat out! My husband wi be offended if you talk trash on Utah lake. But seriously my husband loves to take the boat out anytime!

Andrea June 7, 2012 at 6:47 am

For what it’s worth, I think your arms look awesome and cut. I love the concept of a summer bucket list and I am going to work on one myself!

Claire @ Live and Love to Eat June 7, 2012 at 7:34 am

I love that photo of the dogs in the car before your camping trip – I remember loving it last year when you originally posted it too! :)

sarah @ sarah learns June 7, 2012 at 7:39 am

i love the idea of a summer bucket list! i think i’ll make my own less ambitious version! (it’s already going to be a crazy summer and it’s barely june – things are bound to keep piling up!)

Calee (@chimes) June 7, 2012 at 7:55 am

I’m stealing this idea. Just thought you should know. And love the cute new “about me” graphic! I’m thinking of cutting my hair again soon so I should change mine. ;)

Calee (@chimes) June 7, 2012 at 7:57 am

Also, try growing mint. Apparently it grows like a weed and neither yours nor my not-so-green thumb could kill it (I just started a “not-so-green thumb” board on pinterest with the very same goal in mind!)

Shaunna@mamas13minutemile June 7, 2012 at 8:38 am

I am so doing one too! Stealing a lot of your great ideas :)

Biz June 7, 2012 at 8:59 am

Ah – jealous of all your summer goals! My husband isn’t very active (two knee replacements, bouts of gout, etc.) so I usually stick around the house most weekends.

Although I am taking off days here and there to do some fun stuff – next week I am taking Wednesday off and going to the Green City Market and the French Market in Chicago with my daughter – can’t wait!

I am going to get the Spicy Salami sandwich at this place – it had me at manchego cheese!

Becs in Britain June 7, 2012 at 9:24 am

Hey lovely! Love your summer bucket list – what a great idea! And I totally get what you mean about your arms. One thing I found that massively improved my upper body strength was doing incline presses with my feet up on a weights bench. At first I could only manage a few (I weight train, but my arms have always been weedy!), but I kept pushing myself to do more, and my arms are SO much stronger now! Have fun completing your list. x

ali moll June 7, 2012 at 9:43 am

Good Morning Janetha! I loved watching you and Lil Kate push each other last night! So inspiring! You guys killed it!

Love, love your bucket list! So many fun things to do this summer! I love paying it forward in the Starbucks drive through too. One of my most favorite things to do!

I’m not sure if could cross the monkey bars either! I need to make that a goal this summer too! Whenever we are at GPP together, we will need to work on it!

Have a FAB time in Oregon! :) And thanks much for the link back to my blog! Much appreciated! :)

Christin June 7, 2012 at 10:11 am

How do you make those cool looking lists?? is there an app on your phone for it or something? :)

Nicole C June 7, 2012 at 10:23 am

Ben and I collect art too and we try to get “street art” by any vendors anyway we go. I have a stupid amount of stuff that has yet to be hung.

I love me some hiking and I am 99% sure I will be in Zion this weekend. I just love that place and am surprised it’s June and I haven’t been a single time. So, I must change that. I’d love to go to the other parks in Utah too but I can’t get to them in a day. ;/

As for walking the dogs, I would love to! Kronus is an asshole outside of our house though so he is ultimetly is his own worst enemy. So sad, I would love to walk him but then again, last time we walked him a guy ran in his house pushing his stroller and dragging his yorkie saying “he will eat you alive”..wow..

Ali Mc June 7, 2012 at 11:22 am

Looks like a blast! I want to make my own list. I love the looks of that chicken dish and the photo of you and your man underwater….and of course we can’t forget the cutie pups in the back seat/trunk ;) LOVE IT

Amy Q June 7, 2012 at 11:38 am

Awesome list. Inspired to do my own!

Kacy June 7, 2012 at 11:54 am

That will definitely lead to a fun and busy summer! I’m with you on a lot of it. My bucket list includes a lot of concerts I’m dying to go to, a lot of restaurants I need to check out, and just general merry making. I love the relaxed feeling I get in the summer, so I try to just capitalize on that and really enjoy the calm :)

Alexandria June 7, 2012 at 11:57 am

We went to Costa Rica in March and it was AMAZING. I’m so jealous!

sherice@foodieluvsfitness June 7, 2012 at 12:20 pm

You inspired me as usual :) I was just telling myself that I need to make lists more. If I don’t I always forget things. I have a few of the same things going onto my list as you do.. rock climbing. There is an indoor rock climbing area where I live also. Visit another country which won’t happen anytime soon unless some miracle happens and I win the lotto. The camping which is a must, and that will include wakeboarding or kneeboarding. We bought a boat the end of last summer and we can’t wait to spend our weekends at the lake. Buy art. get a plant and not kill it as I’m also a serial green killer. Try new cafes and new foods.. so we have some things in common. The whole monkey bar sitch, I think the secret and I’ll share with you is just getting into a rhythm. Everything in life is about rhythm. and the coconut ice cream sounds delish. I’d make mine with coconut milk. :) check out my lastest blog post. I think I have a crush on you! and not in a weird rainbow kinda way LOL

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List June 7, 2012 at 12:56 pm

I (and about a zillion other bloggers I’m sure) am stealing this post idea!
And mowing the lawn is a great workout! You’re missing out!

jessiker June 7, 2012 at 1:14 pm

Well good thing I got you an Orchid that you should probably try to keep alive :) I LOVE SWIMMING! Let’s do it. Every weekend. Starting with next?
I want to do a lot of these things with you, as well as….

1. play a song on my banjo at jam speed without error
2. Successfully harvest at least 4 of the vegetables I planted last month.
3. Leave the country as well, I definitely will be at least twice, hopefully I can fit CR in too! :)
4. Go on an overnight hiking trail
5. Go to my cabin at least 4 times
6. Successfully do 10 pushups by Fall (not gonna happen)
7. Go to at least 3 zumba classes every week. 5 is ideal.
8. Train Aki not to bolt out the front gate.
9. Hike Timp again.
10. Try rock climbing!!! yay we can fail together haha.
11. Try to make it to a farmer’s market. Hard working on Saturdays all the time.
12. Read at least one book… (been about 5 years since I’ve read a book)
13. Camp at a new location in Utah I’ve never been to.
14. Make it up to Idaho Falls to eat ice cream at the local dairy and visit my grandparents graves.
15. Successfully try and like a type of fish besides Halibut or Tuna.
16. Go on a road trip with just my sweety.
17. Make Coconut Ice Cream :)
18. Ride my bike on a route longer than 20 miles.
19. Grow my bangs out.
20. Learn something special about Simon I didn’t know.

Jessica June 7, 2012 at 1:19 pm

I think boxing is what finally helped me start to not hate my arms as much. I started to see a lot of definition, but not as bulky as they get when I do a lot of lifting. I think yoga really helps too. But as for a bucket list, I have to say I’d really like to hike more this summer. I kind of fell off last year, but I know Mac would love it so I need to get his furry little butt out into the forest.

the delicate place June 7, 2012 at 1:21 pm

the le creuset fennel collection…well ANY piece is on my whenever list haha. christmas, birthday, just cuz someone loves me? i’d take it and love it.

a few items on my bucket list:
1. try a real macaron at pierre hermes in paris-DONE
2. go to kennywood park-happening 6/22
3. find a dress for my bro’s sept wedding
4. master french braiding my own hair
5. watch fireworks
6. try sangria (never have!)
7. make a point to do happy hour at least 3x this summer
8. go to the beach before summer is over
9. go to the art museum 2x before fall
10. gain 10lbs (5 is prob more realistic but i’m aiming high)

Rachel @ Eat, Learn, Discover! June 7, 2012 at 1:49 pm

Wow, what a great idea! I may just have to do a post with my summer bucket list. It would definitely make summer so much more fun :-)
If I did, I think top of my list would be: host a dinner party for friends and cook everything myself (within reason, of course).
Happy summer!

Lisa June 7, 2012 at 1:58 pm

I love love the idea of paying it forward! Even in the little ways like paying for someone’s coffee! I’m going to work on that for this month for sure! What great ideas! At the end of summer I always say I never accomplished anything exciting, but doing something like this may actually motivate me.

StoriesAndSweetPotatoes June 7, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Still don’t understand what a tin foil dinner is…Cooking literally on tin foil like that 6th grade science experiment? Because it is way more exciting and functional in theory.. :) I have made cookies and hot dogs like this.

Kat June 7, 2012 at 2:21 pm

I love this idea! Definitely doing it on my blog today!

And for the monkey bars I think it’s definitely a confidence thing! I know guys who are so much stronger than me who struggle with it but since I grew up playing on them all lunch as a kid, I can still do them. Even though I was so much stronger as a kid. Seriously. I never appreciated being able to swing around and do pullups and all that back when I could – I just thought it was normal.

Pure2raw twins June 7, 2012 at 5:35 pm

love your summer bucket list! you have so many great things on there! I want to grow a plant as well :) hopefully I can do that in my new home, I do plan on trying. we shall see if it survives.

Aw, how fun! Love the idea of a summer bucket list. I need to swim more too. We even have a pool IN our BACKYARD but don’t use it near enough.
