today was much better than yesterday.
i woke up on time.
i showered—always a plus.
i even had time to make my lunch and coffee!
work was work, nothing new there. however, i did catch a live broadcast of mama pea on the radio—that was a plus. oh, and i had an impromptu date with my own momma b at the harley davidson store. word on the street is that tomorrow is my dad’s 60th birthday, so i had to snag him a couple gifts.
i had bikram yoga on the agenda for my workout today, but my 1 month unlimited pass has expired. i checked the drop-in class rates.. $15. um, that’s $0.17 per minute. a little pricey, if you ask me. i could call australia for less money!
i decided to forego the pricey sweat session and headed to the gym to make one up on my own. my gold’s gym pass is paid in full through july of 2013… i think i am covered!
i really wanted to do a back/bicep workout today, but i knew i should probably hit the treadmill. ugh.. cardio.
if you haven’t noticed, there hasn’t been a whole lot of cardio around these parts lately. i think that whole 2 1/2 months of solid cardio from insanity really burned me out.
in fact, before today, the numbers were looking like this:
days since i finished insanity: 44.
days i have devoted a single workout to cardio since finishing insanity: 0.
oh. that’s just great!
i wouldn’t be to worried about my lack of cardiovascular training if it wasn’t for something that i have signed up for that happens to be right around the corner…
my best friend, kristen, somehow talked me into doing the dirty dash with her on september 17th. even after i ranted about the fact that i don’t like running and i have no desire to ever pay for a race again. she talked me into it.. and i shelled out $45 to run around an obstacle course in some mud. joy. clearly she drugged me and i was delusional.
kristen told me that this was a 5k, and i have done a lot of 5ks in my day. no big deal. yes, i was a little worried about the fact that it’s an obstacle course in the mud.. but i figured i could manage to get through it. it’s only a 5k, after all.
oh, but guess what nugget of information i received recently? that the dirty dash is, in fact, a 10k.
what?! a 10k?
okay, there are a lot of awesome runners in blog land, but i am NOT one of them. i hate running! a 10k to me is far. the longest distance i have ever run in my life is 10k—ONCE—back in 2009. i didn’t train for it or anything.. i went from my 20 minute HIIT treadmill sessions that were usually around 2 miles right to running the 10k, after which i decided i hated running long distances and it would never happen again.. and it hasn’t. pretty sure the longest distance i have run since then is 5 miles—and that has been rare.
so, to put it bluntly, finding out that the dirty dash is a 10k scared the shit out of me. i will not only have to run 6.2 miles.. i will have to do it in the mud. and jump over walls. and hop through tires. and who knows what else. it also made me realize i should start running, since the race is a mere 46 days away.
and that, my friends, is the long story of why i decided to do cardio today.
treadmill HIIT routine:
| minute # | speed | incline |
| 1 | 4.0 | 0 |
| 2 | 4.5 | 0 |
| 3 | 5.0 | 0 |

| 5 | 6.0 | 0 |
| 6 | 6.0 | 0.5 |

| 9 | 7.5 | 0.5 |
| 10 | 6.0 | 1 |
| 11 | 6.5 | 1 |
| 12 | 7.0 | 1 |
| 13 | 7.5 | 1 |
| 14 | 6.0 | 1.5 |
| 15 | 6.5 | 1.5 |
| 16 | 7.0 | 1.5 |
| 17 | 7.5 | 1.5 |
| 18 | 6.0 | 2 |
| 19 | 6.5 | 2 |
| 20 | 7.0 | 2 |
| 21 | 7.5 | 2 |

| 29 | 7.5 | 0 |
| 30 | 8.0 | 0 |
wow, it has been a long time since you’ve seen a cardio table on here, huh?! this was a total of 5k—or 3.1 miles. as you can see, the first 5 minutes was a warm up, followed by 20 minutes of HIIT (BFL style), a brief cooldown and then 5 minutes of jogging to round out the 5k.
it’s still official, i still hate running. meh.
stairmill:
- 10 minutes at level 10 fat burning intervals
i was going to do 20 minutes of the stairmill, but my knees were aching so bad. had to come home and hang out with my tube of bengay.
i am going to keep running a couple/few times a week until the race. and then i am just going to hope i don’t die. good plan, right? plus, if i survive, i will have hardcore muddy photos like lisa (who is a complete mud run superhero, if you ask me).
grilled barbecue chicken pizza!
marshall is the man and grilled the barbecue-sauce marinated chicken before i even made it home from the gym. once i arrived, it was a mere 10 minutes before we were sitting down to eat the pizza.
i am still addicted to grilled pizza. you can see my method here. after having the barbecue chicken variety at my family pizza party the other week, i have had a major craving to have it again.
craving remedied.
paired with a spinach salad for good measure.
guess what? i had spinach in my breakfast, lunch and dinner today! pretty proud of that. too bad spinach won’t make me like running…
Qs~
1. what is the longest distance you’ve ever run?
2. have you ever done a dirty dash/mud run/something like it? if not, does it sound appealing to you?

Eek! I was afraid to do the 5k Dirty Dash, I can’t believe you’re doing the 10k! Good luck girl, you’ll do great!
I could eat grilled pizza EVERY day. I lourve it. I’ve blogged about it 3?4x? Maybe? Looooove.
grilled pizza is pretty bomb. yours looks delish!!
good luck with the race, mama!! i hate running too.
Its been entirely too long since I’ve slathered BBQ on a pizza =) thanks for the inspiration! <3
I've never run past 4 miles… ahhh i'm a wimp! I plan on running more as it gets colder! my legs LOVE the cold! less knee pain!
Uh, I may have gone a quarter of a mile or so without walking… Maybe. Running is not my thing.
Grilled pizza? Now THAT I can get down with. :)
I know you will survive. If you survived Insanity, I am sure you will be fine in a 10k. I can’t wait to see your muddy photos!
That pizza looks amazing. I want a bite and I don’t even eat chicken. :)
It would be so tasty with marinated tofu!!
Back in the day (10 years ago) I use to run 5 miles a day. I liked it a lot! BUt my workouts are solely based on the music I listen to, I’m a music whore and can do just about anything if the music is right!
Once again your pizza has me salivating. I really am going to have to make it this week.
That pizza looks great! :) The longest distance I have ever covered was my first half marathon in May. I have ran 13 miles one other time since then and it wasn’t nearly as fun as the race. I haven’t ever done a dirty dash. I think it could be fun!
I’m almost in the same boat as you. Running a race/marathon is on my ‘bucket list’ so this year I planned to train and run a 10k even though I’m not a very good runner. Then I found out there’s a 5k Spartan Race on the same day that some friends are doing so I decided that sounded like way more fun and way easier. It’s half the distance but there’s 10 obstacles that could include such things as jumping over fire, crawling under barbed wire, carrying cement blocks, climbing ropes, dragging tires, scaling walls, the possibilities are endless and scary. But I’m excited to do it and with some of my good friends by my side!
Oh my goodness, I heard the Spartan race is even harder! Good luck–you will have fun with your friends I am sure!
I love your HIIT workouts, I’m going to have to put this one on my agenda.
The longest I’ve ever run is 26.2 miles, and I don’t ever want to do it again. :-)
I actually signed up for something called the “Tough Mudder” last year, but then found out I was pregnant and opted out. Maybe next year? I’ll live vicariously through you for now.
I think I remember you talking about that! P.S. loving your vacay photos :)
I just did warrior dash on Saturday. It was so much fun I already signed up for another one! I’m sure you will have no problem completing the race and you will love every second of it.
Ive run a marathon but only once. Have done a couple halves and TONS and TONS of 5 and 10k’s. Like at least 200? There was a 5 yr stretch where scott and i raced almost *every single weekend* we’d do a 5k together. It was so much fun! But 5k’s are fun..marathons? mmmm, not so much for me :)
200? you crazy.
I want everyone to know that I didn’t know it was a 10K either!! And if this secret 5K short cut exists, I’m dead set on finding it!! But either way, we’ll have fun and we’ll be glad we did it when we’re done. We might not want to do it again though! I was way scared for Ragnar but it ended up being a blast and a great feeling of accomplishment! But we really need to go running…. outside… okay!?
This is true! I should have said that in the finding out about it being a 10k part. Because I know you wouldn’t have signed up for it had you known hahaha. YES we need to run outside. Maybe we can make a mud puddle, too. xoxoxo
I love BBQ chicken pizza! Ate some leftovers of it the other day actually, for breakfast.
I’ve run a full marathon. I don’t plan on doing it again. I’ve got a half marathon in October. I’m not too busy for exercise in general, but sometimes I feel too busy to dedicate months to training for a 1-2 hour event.
Good luck with the 10k, I hope you can have fun with it :) The mud part sounds hilarious! I’d love to do a 5k with that stuff thrown in.
I have done a muddy instacle course race before… 3 miles but the funnest 3 mile race of my life! That sounds awesome… Totally wish I could join in on it!
You could take my place! Come to Utah–I won’t even make you pay for the registration! ;)
Ah, that sucks that you found out the race is double what you thought! Either way, I’m sure you’ll rock it! I can’t wait to do some sort of mud run! :)
UGH! I despise running yet for some crazy reason one time I actually ran 8 miles on the beach (run/walk/run/walk) and this was from zero running. I don’t know what got into me. So I’ve either never run, or 8, so I guess 8 is my max. And it hasn’t been replicated. Nor will it ever.
And the muddy run sounds like as much fun as an enema.
Also, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a muddy 10K will be way harder than a normal 10K. I remember when I was really into biking: I always said that mountain biking miles were about 3x harder than road miles. I have no idea if the same goes for mud running. And Karen is right = you need to take it outside for prepping!
One day I will have a grill pizza. one day.
Love you. Glad your day was better.
Thanks for being the bearer of news I was trying to ignore! Ugh–I am well aware of how hard it’ll be. I think I should start setting the treadmill to a 15% incline every time to prepare! Who the hell is Karen?
Sorry I’m an asshole. Looks like other commenters think things will go great and i’m sure they will. And I meant Kristen. Idiot and an asshole.
You aren’t an asshole. You are honest… and are the only one not sugar coating it! Let’s face it, I am screwed.
I am doing the dirty dash too! I suckered my sister in law from out of town to do it as well and her reaction was about the same as yours! I am sure it will be a fun adventure!!! Good luck!
Utah blogger! Yay. Going to check your blog. Which weekend are you doing it?
I did this same race last year! You will have so much fun! We laughed more than ran. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, it’s a party! The showers after the race are ICY so take some big containers full of warm water-so much better. If you wear some older shoes you can leave them at the end of the race and donate them. The race isn’t as brutal as it sounds :)
Thanks, Cherlyn! This comment actually made me feel better :)
Was this what you told me about when we were in PS?
Dude, one insanity killed me for life! You’re me hero.
Ditto to the hating running. I’ll be so screwed if I were chased. there’s this class at my gym called “tread and shread” and its more like “tread you’re dead”.
Anyhow, good to hear your say was better. You need a vacation, pronto!
hmm.. no, this is a new development. i wonder what i was telling you about in PS, though? i can’t remember.
i can’t wait for my vacay to LA!
Janetha… it is going to be SO much fun! My sisters and I are doing the dirty dash and I cannot wait. I also HATE to run. I hate cardio. Altogether. You will have a blast. What other time does it make perfect sense to get covered in mud?
What weekend are you doing it?!
Same as you, Sept 17th!
Cool–see you there :)
Did my first marathon this year, having never really been a runner before, although training wasn’t much fun (must find a running buddy for next year – yes i signed up again) the day itself was the happiest day i’ve had in ages. In my home town, with my mum, step-dad & most importantly my 80 yr old Nan supporting me, great weather if a bit too hot & a dip in the sea after to cool off.
I think it was seeing how much my nan enjoyed it that made me sign up for next year, not sure if i’ll do another after that, like you i love my gym work too much. I’m a big group Ex fan, especially the Les Mills classes & i know that once again over winter i wil have to give a lot of them up in place of marathon training. I wish i could do all my classes & train but that is just a little too much to ask of my body.
There’s a mud race near me in England – The Maldon Mud Race. Not something i feel inclined to do – i’d rather do another marathon than be waist deep in the estuary mud!
That’s a really cute story about your nan! love it
That run sounds like fun!! I’m going to try doing one in my area in October.
The farthest I’ve run is a half marathon. It was incredible!!! I overtrained for it and didn’t do enough strength training, but I managed to never stop running!!
happy bday to your dad, j! have fun celebrating!
i loved hearing about this dirty dash. i have no desire to do an event like that. i love running, love racing, have trail raced, but have decided i like ROAD racing the best.
you’re going to do just fine – you’re fit and energetic. just keep running over the next few weeks, and your endorphins will get you thru the race!
the longest i have run is a 6 hour event – i did 64 k in that. it was a loop course which was about a mile long – ’round and ’round you go!!
WOAH that is a lot!! Go you!
I used to run 8k every day without fail, until I started lifting weights. Now I run maybe once a month :)
I did the first ever Australian Warrior Dash in February. It was really fun, until some idiot decided to start running backwards in front of me and tripped me over. My ankle was completely swollen and puffed up like a balloon, and I couldn’t walk properly for 4 weeks afterwards. I insisted on finishing the race though!
Weights definitely trump running in my book, too!
Okay, so even though you are not necessarily a runner, running through the mud and jumping over walls sounds like a blast!! You are fierce girl and will rock this thing! :) I wish I could do it with you.
I wish you could, too!
those seriously are the most fun! I’ve done muddy buddy twice. Just warning you, you’ll have mud stuck in places for DAYS!
Oh, goodie!
That pizza looks delicious!
I think you will do fine in the 10K! You are so active and in shape and I really think the excitement of that sort of race will really help push you along. I’ve always wanted to do a mud run like that!
oh man! i wouldn’t be very pleased to find out what i thought was a 5k was actually a 10k! i think the longest i’ve ever run without stopping was around 5 miles? but i’m not much of a runner and have really never trained for anything ever…
back in college i used to run 7-8 miles 6 days a week…now i think about it and there’s NO WAY i’d 1. pay for a race and 2. run that far again. I think 2-3 miles is good enough for me!
I really need to make grilled pizza! It looks so yummy :) I have ran a few half-marathons, but really want to do a dirty dash!
That pizza looks fabulous! I love how grilled pizza tastes. I could probably eat homemade pizza everyday. It’s so good! :)
Good luck with the race! I’m sure you will do amazing.
I did the Warrior Dash which is a 5K but sounds similar and honestly, you don’t really run much of it. At least for mine, it was so muddy that you really had to walk a lot of the time.
And thank you for calling me an awesome runner! This made my day.
That race sounds amazing- you can totally rock it! I did a mud run that sounds similar earlier this year, and it was by far my favorite race ever!
Don’t worry Janetha I’m sure you’ll be perfectly fine for the Dirty Dash 10K! The object of races like that are just to finish and have fun. :-P
oh that pizza and salad looks AMAZING! Like right out of a restaurant–go you :)
ANd I think you’ll be just fine, I have heard it is a fun race, esp if you don’t love running (I don’t either. HAh)
1.) That pizza looks amazing! Do you have any recipes for gluten-free homemade crust??
2.) The farthest i’ve ever run is 8 miles
3.) You will rock the mud run! It will be so much fun! I have been looking for one in Minnesota ut havent found one yet. Can’t wait to see pictures!
I buy my dough at whole foods! I am a cheater. And also a gluten eater.. sorry, no help :(
I would start to flip out! Just kidding. I think you can do it! I know this is so cliche but “If you put your mind to it you can do it” That pizza looks amazing. The longest distance I have ever run is 4.25 miles on the treadmill. Um I wasn’t even looking at the mileage until I saw 4 and I freaked out!
How did you manage not to look! Haha I am so bored on the treadmill that I STARE at that creeping number.
I put a towel over the number and I think I was watching Real Housewives of New York. :) I think you will be fine :). My motto is always “just keep swimming”.
The farthest I have ever run is 1.5 miles. Despite this, I signed up for a triathlon on August 6 (this Saturday) only 4 weeks ago! It has a 2.5 mile trail run.
I would LOVE to do a mud run, although I think I would prefer to do a 5k mud run.
You are going to have a blast with the mud run, and will have so much fun you won’t have realize you have done a 10k. That is my prediction ;-)
I hope you are right!
Power of positive thinking! You are going to totally rock it out :-)
That pizza looks ABSOLUTELY perfect! And holy cow – that Dirty Dash looks amazing – I always want to think I’m brave enough to do something like that but I don’t know that I would be. GOOD LUCK!!
I think the dirty part sounds like a lot of fun! The dashing part.. not so much! I think you’ll rock it, and you’ll have a blast. :-)
whatever the outcome of the 10k, you should find so much comfort and self-satisfaction in knowing that you did it.. that you tried..that you challenged yourself. THAT is success.. not running the entire way, not effortless jumping over walls or through tires. I’m so incredibly proud of you whether you make it ’til the end, or get stuck in the mud puddle and decide to linger there and relax ;) because you tried something new.. and that’s what life is about!
This was my favorite comment. Thank you.
I’m doing the dirty dash on the 24 with my sister and her husband! I’m stoked :)
Honestly, mud runs (with obstacles etc) don’t seem like races to me. B/c it’s not JUST running. It’s broken up with fun obstacles so it makes it that much better. Plus, you will EXCELL at the obstacles with your strength.
Thanks for the encouragement! Coming from you, it means a lot!
Maybe you won’t notice how long the run is with all those obstacles and stuff you have to do along the way??? Good luck!
I was thinking it may seem longer because of those. uuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh
I have no doubt that you will take that mud run and kill it. You’re just an all star like that. And I’m a mad woman because I think it sounds like so much fun. Wish I could do it with you!
the good thing about those kinds of races with obstacles, more often than not, you have to stop at every one of them to wait for people in front of you to finish the obstacle. So its not like 6.2 CONTINUOUS miles :O)
I think the longest distance I have ever run is a 10K. I was so proud of myself for not walking too!
I would love to sign up for a mud run, but I don’t see me having time for it in the near future. It’s definitely something I will try to get friends or my mom to sign up with me for though! (my mom is awesome, and would love to do a mud run)
Did you make your pizza crust from scratch? Can you share the recipe (or the brand, if you bought it)? It looks so delicious!
nope I cheated! i usually buy the multigrain dough at whole foods, but i wasn’t near a whole foods yesterday so i bought a white ball of dough from the market bakery near my house. it wasn’t as good as whole foods multigrain, but it did the job!
Need some grilled pizza in my life!
I ran a half-marathon in April. Kicked my butt, but I won an award, so that’s always a nice surprise.
Travis, Katy and I did the Warrior Dash in May. It’s an obstacle course race, but only 5k. We dressed up in 80’s garb and had alot of fun.
http://warriordash.com/register2012_georgia.php
That pizza looks INCREDible! Delicious! :D I can’t believe I have yet to try or make a grilled pizza. This needs to change… preferably this weekend! :D
The longest I’ve ever run was my half marathon (13.1 miles.) Someday I’d like to shoot for the full marathon…we shall see. :D
i want to see you make a grilled pizza! you make every food item look amazing.. and i bet your toppings would be unreal.
