valentine’s day rambles. and a giveaway.

happy valentine’s day!

here’s a random valentine’s day story for you.

i was at office depot yesterday grabbing some stamps, and the girl helping me randomly asked me if i had any valentine’s day plans. i figured it was just small talk, but boy, was i wrong. i told her no, that my husband and i weren’t really huge on valentine’s day, but we would be going to a concert that happened to fall on the 14th. she then launched into a whole spill about how valentine’s day is a load of crap. she said she studied anthropology in college and that the story behind valentine’s day was anything but loving.

she told me that it was some guy with the last name of valentine who was madly in love with some chick, but she didn’t love him back. so, on february 14th, he killed himself. and there was a LOT of blood—”that is what the red stands for,” she told me. the story didn’t end there. she then went on to tell me that this girl who didn’t even like valentine felt bad that he killed himself, so she went ahead and killed herself, too, just because she didn’t want to live with a guilty conscience. her voice had become louder and louder as the story went on, and she was super worked up. she finally exclaimed, “what’s so romantic about that?!”

i stood there with a blank stare on my face, totally caught off guard. i wasn’t sure that she was done.. but when she didn’t say anything else i just smiled and said, “wow, i had no idea…”

before i could elaborate on my thoughts of the story (which weren’t many) she cut me off saying, “don’t even get me STARTED on christmas. that is just something we all could do without!”

then, in an instant, she changed her tune (luckily, because i had no rebuttal to the christmas rant) and asked me where my wedding ring was from, because she had been seriously looking at rings and wanted to get engaged to her boyfriend.

and then i went back to my office.

very random.

i must say that i really don’t know the history behind most holidays. that’s probably very ignorant of me, but hey.. at least i am being honest. i am not sure if the story this gal told me about valentine’s day is true or not, but i really don’t have the desire to google it. as far as i am concerned, valentine’s day isn’t something to get super worked up about. sure, it’s nice to give and receive tokens of love.. but i never have been huge on the 14th of february. on years i was single, i didn’t get real depressed about it. on years i had a boyfriend, we would celebrate with a gift exchange and a nice dinner, which seemed forced and obligatory.

the first valentine’s day that marshall and i celebrated together in 2008 was one of those obligatory-type ones. we went to a fancy steakhouse, i wore a dress and heels in the dead of winter (that was back when it snowed in utah), we exchanged very expensive gifts, and ate chocolate fondue with strawberries in his bedroom after dinner. whew, it was way too much for me.

every valentine’s day since that one in 2008, marshall and i have celebrated with him making me tacos. it’s his signature dish and we’d rather eat at home and hang out with the pups, anyway.

flashback 2010…

and in 2009… the same thing happened, but no photo. i didn’t have this blog back then, but i mentioned it on my old blog.

we made a rule that gifts were not mandatory, nor were flowers, chocolates, or anything of the sort. however, we do usually exchange funny cards (i just wrote “funny carbs”—carbs on the brain, perhaps? probably a foreshadow of what’s to come in this post..) because we love cards. and last year marshall gave me a year of smoothies—meaning he would shave his face any time i asked. i’d say he did it about 67% of the time that i asked, and that’s not bad for a guy who hates to shave! i tried to not ask too often… but man, i love a clean-shaven marshall.

(circa april 2011)

this year we actually will probably eat leftovers for dinner. we have leftover chili, chicken & wild rice soup, and healthy hamburger helper (recipe coming soon!) and then we are off to see cursive. we both love the band, so it’ll be a nice little valentine’s day activity. the only downside is the show doesn’t start til 9.. which means music will start around 10.. which means cursive probably won’t play til 11.. it’s going to be a late night!

although i don’t get valentines from my valentine, i did get a couple of fun things this year.

my boss gave me some chocolate covered strawberries.. and said, “these probably aren’t healthy…” as he handed them to me. haha. he knows me well. although a little chocolate never hindered a healthy eating plan, right?

image

and i got my gift from the valentine’s day exchange that christina held! it’s from carly over and soak and simmer.

IMG_1705

thanks, carly! love the owl stuff.

i received an early valentine from my friends at nature’s path. when i got home from mexico about a week ago, i had a special delivery!

all four

that’s right.. my FAVORITE granola is now available in four flavors instead of just one! you may have heard me raving about love crunch granola before. like here, here, and even here.  i love it. randy loves it too, as mentioned here. that’s no surprise.. right? well, the original love crunch flavor is sold at costco in BIG bags, and let’s just say i eat way more of it than i should. i am a granola monster.

it should be no surprise that i eagerly agreed when nature’s path wanted to send me all the new flavors.

red berries

this original flavor has cocoa, flax, coconut, strawberries, raspberries, and dark chocolate chunks.

apple

the apple crumble has pecans, green apples, chia, and cinnamon.

aloha

the aloha blend has coconut, white chocolate chunks, and pineapple.

carrot

the carrot cake has raisins, pecans, yogurt bits, carrots, and pineapple.

oh boy. talk about amazing granola overload. each day, i have a handful of each flavor and try to decide which i like best.

i have eaten a lot of granola.

i still can’t pick a favorite.

see?

image

that was a facebook exchange i had with nature’s path. i seriously CANNOT PICK a favorite. luckily, i don’t have to. they’re all so perfect.

image

aside from being delicious, love crunch granola has a few other pros:

  • all flavors are USDA certified organic
  • all flavors have 14-15 grams of whole grain per serving
  • all flavors are low in sodium and contain no trans fat or cholesterol
  • there is a touching love story behind the love crunch line (found here)

additionally, nature’s path is known for their generosity and they always make sure to give back to the community. for every bag of love crunch that is sold, they will donate the equivalent in cereal or cash (up to $1 million) to food banks. they have dubbed this the “bite4bite” initiative to create “love bundles” for those in need.

nobody is paying me to say that nature’s path is a stand-up company with impressive values and equally as impressive products. i can’t get enough of them!

if you would like to win a package of the four love crunch flavors, here’s your chance.

image

one commenter on this post will receive a lovely package of granola.. all you have to do is comment. no crazy requirements. i will announce the winner on friday, february 17th. update: giveaway is now closed.

and for the rest of you who just can’t wait to get your hands on the new flavors, you can buy it at the following locations:

i am trying to pace myself when eating the four bags of granola, but i think i may need to re-stock before the month is over.

well, that’s enough out of me. check ya later! happy love day!

Qs~

1. do you pay attention to the origin of holidays? thoughts?

2. how do you feel about facial hair? random.. but i am curious.

xo. janetha g.

*i got the granola for free. nature’s path is providing the giveaway prize. i wasn’t paid anything.

I actually love facial hair. My boyfriend works at a refinery so he sometimes has to wear a respirator. He has to shave every couple days or his respirator won’t fit right. I love when he has a few days off and doesn’t shave and gets that scruffy look.

PS the aloha granola looks so tasty!

That girl seemed a little crazy for randomly ranting to a stranger like that…

Anyway, I somewhat care about the origin of holidays. I don’t celebrate Halloween because it’s pointless unless you’re a little kid, IMO. All the other holidays we celebrate pretty traditionally I would say.

Hahah..Sounds like that girl was a bit lonely and bitter and preyed on a helpless stranger! Quite the story though- I’ll give her that..
When it comes to facial hair, I feel like it depends on the guy.. My husband looks best with a few day stubble or clean shaven- and I think I’m more of a fan of that. Some guys really rock the facial hair as part of their personality- and I think it definitely works for some of them..
Coconut granola?! YUM YUM- I would love some :)

ooh!! the dark chocolate and red berries looks delicious!! i’m a sucker for dark chocolate….i may need to forego the gym tonight to hit up my costco to see if they have it in stock!

i HATE HATE HATE facial hair on my man. i don’t mind it much on other people (esp celebs…ow ow!)–but when it comes to my man, he needs to be cleanly shaven. i hate stubble. it hurts! long beards/mustaches just gross me out. don’t worry–this is a constant argument with my boyfriend when it comes to his facial hair. he threatens to grow it out or if i’m being difficult or if we’re in a fight–he’ll purposely not shave in spite of me (jerk.)

I didn’t know any of that story about the origin of Valentine’s Day! My students asked me about it today and I said, “we’ll look it up later…” which is what I always say when I don’t feel like doing it at the moment. Maybe I should be glad I didn’t know the story :-)

I’m not a big fan of Valentine’s Day because of the pressure that always seems to surround it. Years I had a boyfriend it was always tough to actually convince them I didn’t want anything special or overdone because they read that as code for “I’m saying I don’t want it, but I’ll be pretty upset if you act like its any other day” – except I really wanted it to be like any other day. The best Valentine’s I ever had was just me and my ex renting a movie and making dinner together. We got to spend time together but there wasn’t anything to stress about.

I think you and Marshall have the right idea with your tradition and hope you enjoy your concert tonight!

I do pay attention to the origin of holidays because of Jason’s religious beliefs. Before him, I had no idea. I continue to celebrate them all, regardless. Meh! I love facial hair. Love it! Now I’m going to go buy some granola. They all look delicious! Happy Valentines Day!

This has nothing to do with this post, but I had a dream about you last night.

I was in Utah for some reason and I was bringing Charlie to the vet (because that’s what I would go to Utah for?) – and you were at the vet with Marshall and Randy (because he ate all the Larabars and you were concerned). I walked past you all non-nonchalantly, hoping you would notice it was me but I was too scared to say anything. Turns out, you did – but only because I circled you like ten times and I had my dog with me. Then we ditched the vet and went to your place (which was in the same building as the vet) and made dinner.

The end.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

That granola looks amazing, I wonder if they have it at Costco in Canada too.

I think that random chick and the dude I work with would make good friends, in a weird awkward sort of way! He kept telling and re-telling his version of the origin of Valentine’s day – something about how it started back with Catholicism was much more lenient with priests loving on little boys. There just so happened to be a Saint Valentine that was quite the pedophile and therefore he got a holiday…or something like that?!

Oh, and the guy telling this story repeatedly?! He was my supervisor…and he told it very loudly at the bakery we work at meaning that 90% of the people attempting to enjoy their meal got to hear it. You better believe my respect level for him went way….well, not up!

All of that being said – we didn’t do anything for Valentine’s day and we never do. My favorite part of the holiday is the 15th – when all the candy goes on sale! :)

I don’t pay much attention to the origins of holidays and if I would have been on the other end of that rant I would have been surprised if I didn’t start giggling….wow!
As for facial hair, I don’t mind a little stubble…my hubby actually looks better like that. He did a bet with a guy he works with and couldn’t shave for a month though and that was ridiculous. It looked like he had a 70′s porn star mustache and I couldn’t stop staring at it. I couldn’t wait til he shaved that stuff off!
I have got to try this granola….sounds yummy!

I am pumped that they don’t include walnuts in the apple or carrot cake flavors because I am allergic. That makes me like the company just from that little detail. :)

I like a little, well-groomed facial hair. A goatee, van dyke, or soul patch is sexy. The full-on ZZ Top or Grizzly Adams facial hair, not so much. Lucky for me, DH alternates amongst the former and smooth, which is also adorable on him. :-)

I love learning about the origins of holidays or any customs/traditions! I think people like that employee get too caught up with hating holidays though.. it’s meant to be celebrated! It’s part of culture for meanings to change, and it’s bound to happen with holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Christmas. But I guess the hatred is born because we’re kinda pressured into thinking it’s some glorious celebration and it creates expectations and disappointment?

As for Valentine’s Day, last year my husband and I went all out (similar to you and Marshall) and it wasn’t nearly as much fun as this year, where we went out to a low-key local Ethiopian restaurant and ate with our hands! YUM. Our local organic / local food shop had all these to try a few weeks back. I almost got the carrot cake one, but I was on a mission to find a “low points” cereal, and these are 6-7 points per 1/4 c serving, and most cereals are more like 2-3 for a 3/4-1 c serving, so I got some peanut butter puffins instead. I’ve been wanting some of this ever since though.

I do pay attention to the origin of holidays. In fact, I have a theory that Christmas really is an American holiday now because it’s gone so far from the Christian tradition that it’s become an Americanized thing instead of a Christian thing. But that’s just me.

Facial hair? I used to HATE it. Loathe it. But that’s because I used to date a guy who couldn’t grow it. It would come in all patchy and trashy. Gross. The guy I’m dating now has a beard and would look like a 10-year-old without it (true story). I told him when we started dating that the beard would have to go, but then he showed me a picture of him without a beard. Needless to say, he still has facial hair. And a lot of it.

I think I’d have a hard time choosing a favorite too. They all look delicious! I do know the history on most holidays, but it doesn’t make me want to celebrate them any less. Facial hair? My husband always has it in some form. He goes from just a ‘stache (uh huh) to full on grizzly man beard and everything in between. He did have a smooth face on our wedding day per my request. But, I figure, he lets me do whatever I want with my head of hair, I can do the same for his facial hair.

I don’t think I could choose a favorite flavor, either! They all look so good!
Now, about the origin of holidays, I do like to learn about them. (I have a bit of a history nerd in me.) But I don’t let the origin determine whether I want to celebrate said holiday or not. I like to determine my own meaning to holidays, I guess? Like Valentines Day? It’s just a good excuse to celebrate people I love (not limited to my husband).

I love the fact that thsi company gives back to the community — how wonderful! I honestly don’t pay any attention to the origin of holidays and probably should. Also….facial hair looks fantastic on some people while clean shaven looks best on some! And, personally, I don’t like mustaches – they totally creep me out.

i don’t really pay attention to holiday origins, but i do know that the first american valentines were created in my home-town.

as far as facial hair goes, i’m a fan. i actually prefer facial hair so long as it’s maintained (trimmed nicely, shaped, etc… not just neglected neck hair). what can i say, i like my men (husband) rugged :)

i have got to find that aloha granola. coconut anything is my favorite.

HAHA that story about Office Depot had me laughing out loud. Some people share wayyy too much with strangers. And that granola looks delicious. I always struggle to find a good granola that’s not FULL of sugar, and at only about 6 grams per serving, that is pretty good when most of the granola in the stores has 10+ grams.

I much prefer my man clean shaven. I’ve never been able to get used to stubble when you kiss and brush cheeks. It always feels like rough sandpaper! Can’t blame the men for not wanting to shave every day though. It must get to be such a pain!

I just bought their cereal (Crunchy Vanilla Sunrise) from Costco last weekend. I cannot stop eating it! It is one of the best gluten-free cereals that I have come across! I will be buying the Love Crunch ASAP! I didn’t realize they were the same products that you have raved about since they changed to new packaging.

That Granola looks to die for!!! Yum. Just yum.
I knew that about Valentine’s day but didn’t know if it was just a myth. Kind of morbid and unromantic..
I used to get really hyped up about holidays. Commit to each one in the fullest. I decided it wasn’t worth the pressure and unrealistic expectations to make Vday a big deal, now that I’m madly in love everyday now.
So I told Simon NO gifts NO surprises NO obligations this year. And I mean it. But he managed to come home with a lovely dinner to make me with some sparkling Martinellis and a cupcake to share for dessert. It was the sweetest. I am way too lucky.

I like stubble facial hair, I hate it beyond that. I love it when there’s a 1-2 hasn’t shaved look but nothing more.

Mmmm, Aloha Crunch sounds really tasty….

1. I like to know a little bit about the origin of holidays, but for the most part, they are what you make them and hopefully you make them something good. =)

2. Shaven or not all depends on the person. I could imagine trying to kiss a scratchy faced guy. Luckily Mick doesn’t have facial hair like that, he and I much prefer facial hair on him, but it is not scratchy. =)

The apple granola looks amazing! I would love to try some. Regarding holidays, I don’t usually pay attention to the origin, but I probably should. The sources of our common traditions can be really fascinating. On facial hair, I have to say, I’m a big fan. I’m looking forward to my boyfriend participating in March Mustache Madness this year, where he and his friends grow hilarious facial hair… just ’cause.

My hubby and I don’t celebrate valentine’s day either, the first year we were together we did nice gifts, but since my birthday is the 25th and our anniversary is next month we find it silly. Instead we surprise each other with small momentos throughout the year.

As for the random girl, I think she told you the wrong story. Valentines Day is named after St. Valentine, his feast day is February 14th. He was a Christian Matyr who was beheaded for marrying christian couples. There is more to the story you can read about it here (if you are interested) http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=159

I don’t care about the origin of many Holidays – I had heard Valentine’s Day was less than romantic. We celebrate with food, no gifts (unless it’s a less expensive thing) and an excuse to spend time together. :)

And I love facial hair. My hubby has a goatee and he shaved it off when he first started working (right before we got married). When he shaved it I made it clear he had to grow it back before the wedding. :) I think he’s had a goatee now for at least 13 years, except that “first impressions” at work stint.

2. If my honey knew about marshall’s year of smoothies, he just mighta given me a year of ‘grizzlies’ for 2012. Gotta love the 5 o’clock shadow, the catfish hunter, the fu-manchu, mutton chops, the wraparound. He’s currently sporting the french fork, and I couldn’t be prouder :D

I don’t typically pay attention to the origin of holidays, although I do remember learning about some of them in elementary school.

As for facial hair, I think your year of smoothies is hilarious!!! I think it all depends on the guy and their style, personally. I’ve dated guys from all ends of the hairiness spectrum, from fully bearded to bare as a baby’s bottom (HA!). My boyfriend has minimal facial hair, but I actually love when he goes a few days without shaving and has that sexy little scruff. He loves a smooth face though…wanna switch men? (Kidding).

Aaaanyway, I am excited about this granola giveaway. I love granola, but I can’t afford to buy it very often on my budget–$4-5 for a small bag is just not in the cards for me. I’m the kid buying store-brand cheerios in bulk, but only when it’s on sale. HA!

First, I want to give a shout out to the other Anna who posted — your name rocks! I actually don’t know any other people with my same name, other than my coworker’s kids because apparently it became super cool a few years ago. I was named after my great-grandma so I guess she was a trendsetter.

Anyway, the point of my comment is to say I love your description of Valentine’s Day throughout your relationship. Our first year together, we made an entire WEEKEND out of it (which was actually very romantic because we made homemade pasta together) and now we celebrate by exchanging cards and cooking at home. I’d rather relax at home with Matt over sitting in a crowded restaurant with 100 other strangers anyday. We love cards and any excuse to give them, so we still do that.

My kids and husband love the love crunch (original) and I was so happy to see it so insanely cheap at Costco! We bought 4 bags on Saturday…

The granola looks really good! Looks like there are big clusters too. I love adding granola to yogurt for the extra crunch!

Carrot Cake granola is a great idea!!

I prefer clean shaven over facial hair, but my boyfriend hates to shave. He ends up being scruffy about 80% of the time, and then shaves for special occasions (when there will be lots of photos taken)

We aren’t big on going out for dinner on Valentines Day either. Especially when it falls on a Tuesday. I love the idea of the taco ritual – it’s making it special to the two of you that really counts!

Would love to try this granola!

1. Sometimes when I’m bored, I will look up the origins of holdiays.
2. I actually like the facial hair but only from one extreme to the other: a 5 o’clock shadow or a full on beard.

Didn’t get a chance to comment on the Randy saga…but that is hilarious!!! I swear you need to put a little camera on his collar (they actually have one’s for your pets!) just for kicks(: He looks so innocent so I would have suspected Penny first!

Yuck on the facial hair…it’s too scratchy. As for holiday origins…ehhh, no real curiosity but fun for trivial pursuit.

I love the look of scruff on boys – but the scratchiness huuuurts!

And – I would love some granola. Can’t like – I’m a creeper of your blog, but that granola is why I’m coming out from the blog-stalker shadows and making myself known :)

As for facial hair, scruff is OK, but when Seth’s starts to get into beard mode, it grows in bright RED–and he is not a red head. He ends up looking mismatched.

I thought Love Crunch only came in dark chocolate and berries! I seriously seriously love this stuff, so very delicious. I didn’t even recognize Marshall all clean shaven with short hair- he looks good in any style.

NO idea about origins of holidays. Derek and I always hate going out on Vday b/c it’s exactly like you said: forced. The coolest thing we ever did was go on a midnight mountain bike ride/picnic up in the Santa monica mtns near malibu. so rad.

I have heard the story on “valentine” don’t really have a big interest in the reason holidays were formed. Lol Acts of love and kindness shouldn’t be confined to “one day” if everyone showed it daily there wouldn’t have to be those forced apologies! Bright side it could be just the excuse the self-centered people need, giving them a push to work on their relationships. As for the “hair” nothing better than a mid-night shadow! Love a little face hair, to much can be a bear of disaster. No body and BACK hair though, shave that man, clean him up! I get them clippers out on my man, I taught him well! Now, after 17 years he does it himself and a few other areas as well, he enjoys the cleanliness himself now too, he says he doesn’t sweat as much now, plus keeps down the odor.

I like learning about the origins of holidays and the history behind most things we say, do, and celebrate. I find it interesting, but it rarely influences whether I celebrate a holiday or not. Often the origins of a holiday have little to do with why we celebrate holidays today.

I remember learning about holiday vaguely in elementary school but I tend to focus on the traditions I’ve developed rather than the historical facts.
As far as facial hair – it doesn’t look good on my bf, there is a french guy in my department with a small scruffy beard and i love it on him, and I do not like muttonchops on anyone.
