real talk.

in deep thoughts

hey, hi, hello! been a minute since i’ve devoted time to the blog, i should really not neglect it so often.. but life has been busy and fun and good so it’s fine.

i have been doing a lot of thinking about my current plan–or lack thereof–and wanted to share my thoughts with you all. maybe one of you will relate. and if not.. i sure will feel better by getting all my thoughts into words. writing is therapeutic!

so, as you may know, i completed the advocare 24 day challenge and finished it on september 24. i LOVED every last bit of the challenge and the results i had–both inside and out.

NewImage

my digestion issues are GONE and i was also able to drop some fat and gain some muscle. it was a winning situation all around. speaking of winning, i did the challenge as part of a competition that my friend michelle davis (better known as mshell) was hosting. turns out, i was one of the three lucky winners! my prize? a month of online nutrition and fitness training from mshell fitness. this is a very sought-after plan and it’s very hard to become one of her clients. in fact, she has so many clients that the only way to get “in” is to win one of her challenges. i was suuuper stoked that i won the free month! not only because it is a $300 value, but because i look up to michelle and am always astonished by the ladies who are on team mshell. i was thrilled to be a part of the team!

i didn’t receive my plan until a couple weeks after i won, but i wanted to keep up my progress and maintain my “after”.. so i just kept up with the advocare meal plan, my GPP workouts, drinking my water, and living a healthy lifestyle. my results were easy to maintain, as the 24 day challenge had ingrained a new lifestyle in me that became second nature. when i received my plan from michelle, it was the week of marshall’s birthday. i knew i would be indulging much more than usual and so i decided to hold off on starting the plan.. especially after seeing how intense and involved it was.

a week later, i started the plan. i told you guys all about it, did my meal prep, planned my workout schedule, and was ready to give it my all. i figured i SHOULD give it a shot, because it was handed to me.. something people pay a lot of money for, i received for free, and i wanted to make the most of it. unfortunately, on day two of the plan is the day i had my seizure during my hysterosalpingogram. that really threw me through a loop and i was down and out for almost the rest of the week. i didn’t want to follow the meal plan (i wanted crackers and soup!) and i couldn’t really work out, so i followed it half-assed and decided i would give it 100% when i got feeling better. side note–those who have asked about my test–the results were good! there is nothing wrong with my fallopian tubes, cervix, or uterus.. which is what the test was looking for. yay.

one thing i found during that first real week of the plan was that while i CAN eat the same meals over and over and i CAN stick to a program, my heart really wasn’t in it. i enjoy making dinner for marshall and myself and sitting down and eating it together. this is very important to me, and my new meal plan wasn’t allowing that to happen. i was having to make him something else and then eat my two small meals from my plan in the evening. it was a hassle and also not very fun. so, that was my first decision in straying from the plan…

i know how to eat clean. i’ve been doing it for over five years. i know what macros are. i know what is good for my body. i can make a different delicious, healthy dinner every night with confidence that what i have cooked will only contribute to maintaining my results and even yield more improvements. so i decided i would follow the meal plan for the first part of the day–eating the same breakfasts and lunches and snacks is easy for me and it was really nice to have a healthy meal plan outlined and ready to go. but in the evenings, i would combine meals 4 and 5 and have my own dinner rather than those two meals on the plan. that’s what i have been doing and it’s working fabulously. i am not hung up on my weight, but i do weigh myself occasionally and have lost 2 more pounds since i finished my 24 day challenge. feeling fab and fit!

Screen Shot 2013 11 03 at 6 14 12 PM

then there are the workouts.. you guys, i went from working out at GPP for under 30 minutes each day to doing the lifting and cardio workouts on my new plan.. where i was in the gym for up to two hours some days. there is also morning cardio on the plan, but i DON’T do mornings.. and i have to admit i still haven’t completed a single morning cardio workout on the plan. i LOVE LOVE LOVE the lifting routines. she has me lifting heavy with single body part splits each day and that is something i had actually missed quite a bit when i switched to GPP.

Screen Shot 2013 11 03 at 6 14 41 PM

i have hit those lifting workouts hard and have really enjoyed them. i have done about 1/3 of the cardio called for on my plan.. i just can’t hang mentally even though i KNOW it’s good for me. i struggle with cardio and always have. i am a HIIT junkie because it’s fast and effective. but i have been trying to do the cardio routines on my plan as much as i can handle.

let’s take that last phrase.. “as much as i can handle.” i KNOW i can PHYSICALLY do the plan–both the nutrition part and the workouts–i can do it. i have the skills, knowledge, obedience, strength, and willpower to do all of it. but i can’t handle it because of one reason: i don’t want to.

i don’t want to spend 2 hours at the gym or do 2-a-days. i don’t want to wake up early and work out when i have plenty of time after work for the gym. i don’t want to eat the same stuff every day. i don’t want to skip out on dinner with my husband. i don’t want to worry so much about eating something not on my plan.

let’s talk about what i DO want.

i am a full-fledged foodie.. i want to create recipes and share them. i want to eat a different dinner every night. i want to gain more muscle and get stronger. i want to eat clean 80% of the time. i want to enjoy myself on the weekends and go out to eat, get drinks, and sleep in. i want to maintain my current results. i am HAPPY with the photo above.. i LOVE my body. call me vain.. it’s okay. i’m still stoked.

i’ll be honest.. i felt a little guilty when i decided i wasn’t willing to do the plan i was given. this is an AMAZING plan that MANY women wish they could receive. i received it and wouldn’t even follow it for an entire week let alone four weeks. i felt like i was taking something that is solid gold and tossing it aside. but one thing i didn’t feel was disappointed or ashamed. i felt bad for not following the plan to a T because i always like to give things my all, but i also know myself and i realized that plan was not something i was after. not right now at least. it’s just not for me!

i have several friends who are fitness competitors. in fact, one of my very best friends, kerryne, just took FIRST PLACE at the las vegas classic NPC show yesterday in a class of 40 women (BRAVO!) i work with her and talk to her 24/7, and i know what it takes to do what she does. she makes a different dinner for her family. she does a lot of cardio. she eats the same meals day in and day out. and she won first place because of all that. michelle’s training produces the results needed to win fitness competitions. she has trained countless incredible ladies who continue to amaze me with their hard work, constant effort, and incredible results…

Screen Shot 2013 11 03 at 6 20 43 PM

source: http://instagram.com/mshelllll

…but i don’t want to be a fitness competitor. i look up to these ladies, and YEAH.. who wouldn’t want to look like them and have the strength and determination they have? but i am not willing to put in the work it takes, because i simply don’t want that lifestyle. and there’s nothing wrong with wanting something different than the next girl. everyone is amazing in their own way. my friend, kenzie, just ran a FIFTY MILE RACE in, like, nine hours. i told her i could never do that. she insisted i could.. to which i replied that i simply don’t want to. but i admire her skill and strength and perseverance. just as i admire all of michelle’s clients and all my other fitness competitor friends who are knockin’ it out of the park with their progress and results. freaking rock stars, i tell you.

but i have a different kind of life in mind. take this weekend, for example.. friday night i went out to dinner and had a turkey avocado wrap, french fries, and a beer. i went out to a few bars and drank some fireball. i enjoyed a late-night run to del taco. i went to einstein’s and had a bagel egg sandwich with marshall saturday morning. i tried the new barbecue restaurant in town with marshall last night and we also got frozen yogurt at yogurtland (i’m obsessed with the pumpkin+plain tart froyo with graham crackers!) and i had some bacon and a deep fried scone with honey butter this morning. but i also hit the gym for a killer shoulder workout and some HIIT. i did some healthy meal prep. i ate healthy snacks and lunches all weekend long. i took my vitamins and supplements and drank a gallon of water a day. and i’m still here.. healthy as ever.. shoot, my abs are still visible and i was able to lift heavier weights today. that’s what i’m talking about!! living a little on the weekends is not the end of the world for me!

so, bottom line? what’s next? what’s the big deal, janetha?

i am just going to continue doing my thing, eating clean, completing workouts i enjoy, and living the life i choose to live. i am going to continue taking my favorite advocare products that have helped me get to where i am today. they continue to keep my digestion issues in check and maintain my current physique and aid me in building muscle and getting stronger… which is exactly what i am after. i am SO stoked that i did find the 24 day challenge, because i found something that works well for me and is totally manageable to do while still enjoying the things i love (see my “what i DO want” list above.) that’s the thing.. when i did the 24 day challenge, it was so do-able and yielded awesome results. the meal plan had variety and flexibility and i thrived on the plan. when i had the new plan introduced to me, it was just too much. too serious, too dialed in, and not what i was after. so i am going to revert back to the advocare meal plan and keep up with michelle’s workouts and some of the meals on her plan. i have found a balance where i can live life but still have the results i am personally after. not everyone is after a stage-ready bikini body or tackling a 50-mile race.. and, hey, that’s OKAY!

i guess i wanted to write this post because i know how it is. you read blogs and scroll through instagram and wish you had the things other people have. the stage-ready bikini body. the medal from a marathon. the perfect, on-point eating habits. but stop comparing yourself to others and wishing you had what they had. also, remember what it takes to have those things. recognize the hard work those people are putting in to get those things. it’s not a walk in the park and they earned those results. if you truly want those things, good for you, GO AFTER THEM. put in the work, you will get the results. but don’t feel bad if you don’t want those things. don’t feel bad if you choose a different path. be happy with your decisions. make your own goals and go after them and be happy when you reach them. and find what works for YOU.. because we are all different. and that’s completely okay.

mmmkay.. deep thoughts are over. THANK YOU for reading, if you read, it means a lot that you took the time to hear me out. i’m grateful for each and every one of you!

p.s. i just made some delicious (healthy) mushroom beef stroganoff for dinner.. recipe to come!

NewImage

p.s.s. i am off to give these pumpkin cheesecake brownies a whirl.. hope they turn out!

share your thoughts! what works for you? what are your goals and what are you doing to reach them?

I ALWAYS feel bad about not wanting things others would kill to do. For example, I ran my first half marathon in September, and really hated it. Everyone is telling me that it was so amazing that I did it and I should definitely do more, but just like you, I don’t want to. I did it once, didn’t like it, now moving on. Just because others want it, doesn’t mean we should. I am so with you on this one.

Krista November 3, 2013 at 8:33 pm

Great post, thanks!!

Momma b November 3, 2013 at 8:36 pm

Read and loved every word!! You continue to amaze me with your insight and sensible approach to life.

I loved the AdvoCare challenge and I intend to keep up with the supplements. I’ve gone back to GPP workouts and boy I’m sore!

I’m paying closer attention to my eating habits. I’ve learned I can eat clean and feel great 75-85% of the time.

I love you so much!! xo

Trisha November 3, 2013 at 8:41 pm

Thank you. That’s all. Just simply .. Thank you.

Lindsay @ The Lean Green Bean November 3, 2013 at 9:09 pm

proud of you, girl!

Angela November 3, 2013 at 9:19 pm

I was wondering how that plan was going…so glad you wrote. I love that you share how “real” your life is. Yes, media such as blogs, IG, and FB can portray a different view of how life really is.

I did your Holiday Hustle. I’m competitive. uber competitive. I wanted to win! In the end, I got injured from a marathon I ran, I got sick and had migraines from stress at work at least 2x/week, I wasn’t sleeping, I was stressed and I cut back my normal workout routines by 50-75%. BUT – I still saw results – (even with hardly working out). Not the kind of results I wanted originally (after all, I wanted to win). But, I’m ok with how it turned out. Having a group that you put together (the “Hustlers”) – kept me motivated and accountable. And, things could have been way worse – I think I only “stressed” ate about 2x’s. That’s awesome for me! One of the days I stress ate, I went out with a friend and had pizza and wine – the first time since I started the challenge (it was on day #23). (Prob should have taken the pictures BEFORE pizza/wine consumption – oh well, you live and learn!)

That’s the longest I’ve ever posted on here. Whew! Love reading your updates. Do what makes you happy! It’s working!

Megan November 3, 2013 at 9:23 pm

Wow, you just said exactly what I’ve been feeling for a long time – I have even thought about copying this to my PT, because sometimes I feel guilty that I’m not following my (expensive) plan to a T – I don’t want to give up on life with my bf or social occasions. You said it perfectly. Thank you.

Kayla November 3, 2013 at 9:29 pm

I’m really really happy for you for realizing this in yourself.
I totally get that for some people competitions and diet plans are cool, but personally I love working out and I love food and I just want to live my life.
There are so many other wonderful things I can set my mind to like being a better student, a better employee, a better artist…live your life, girl!

lauren @ sassy molassy November 3, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I think making the decisions that make your life fun and you happy are the right ones. Sometimes I try to be too strict and that’s when it’s good to have a husband who wants to live a little free-er than I and insists we grab a drink or two or get dessert. Life is short. Live it up! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. I can’t even imagine the discipline it takes to be fitness model. Whew!

Crystal November 3, 2013 at 9:41 pm

Thank you :) thank you for taking the time to share what I think so many of us struggle with. I don’t have to what you do or what anyone else does. I have to do what works for me. Where I am. And that’s ok. I’m so happy that you’re test results came back ok. And thanks for sharing life with us. :)

Bonnie November 3, 2013 at 11:36 pm

[wrote a long comment and the page timed out or something…bummer! this will be shorter and to the point – probably good anyway!]

loved this post, Janetha. it’s exactly how I feel right now with my health and fitness. i really did like the advocare challenge and think the habits i’ve formed will stick with me long after it’s over! even after being in Boston all week and letting loose with some sugar, sweets and a beer, i feel fit and healthy as i hit my workouts and water daily and was mindful in my eating. thanks for giving a voice to the non-fitness competitors, the not-huge-phsyical-fitness-achievers and the others trying to stay fit and healthy and active without letting it consume them. i, too, admire others’ discipline (kerryanne is amazing and training for something is truly rewarding!) but i’m also just not there right now and happy with where i’m at. loved processing along with you in this post as i’m in a very similar place. thanks for sharing – and glad you enjoyed some fireball and fro yo this weekend. ;)

Carbzilla November 3, 2013 at 11:43 pm

Good for you. I do think there’s something very unhealthy and obsessive that lurks in the fitness world, but at least they look good. You just have to wonder if looking back, these girls are going to wish they’d spent all those hours on an achievement that lasts, like becoming a doctor or starting a business. Believe me, for many women all this may be a distant memory when they’re in their 40’s with nothing to show for it but a few “Remember when” photos.

ML Bishop November 4, 2013 at 1:13 am

loved this janetha! it really is so easy to get swept up and forget to nourish the things in your life that truly make you happy <3 glad you're in line with the things that matter.

betty (the sweaty betty) November 4, 2013 at 6:25 am

love this. I can understand where youre coming from on everything you just wrote. i’m glad youre not beating yourself up about it either. as much as the 24-day challenge has structure.. it also has that much flexibility and I’ve seen how strict those mshell workouts/meals are (from instagram) and can imagine its not the easiest thing to keep up with, esp since that’s not the lifestyle (bikini competitor) you’re striving for. just keep doing what you do! you look effing amazing!! love you!

Sam @ Better With Sprinkles November 4, 2013 at 6:44 am

Looks like you found something that works for you, and that’s awesome. I feel the same way about the competitor lifestyle – technically I COULD do it, but I don’t want to. I think you have an awesome attitude towards fitness/health and you’re approaching it in a healthy/reasonable way!

Sara November 4, 2013 at 6:50 am

Beautiful post. Thanks for sharing! Right now, due to life circumstances, I’m a low point fitness wise and really want to get back in shape. But, part of me realizes that right now I need the rest and need to back off of exercising for this time. I’m hoping to get back into very soon, and as you say, GO AFTER IT! (I’m sensing a 24-day challenge in my books…. :) )

Livi November 4, 2013 at 6:50 am

You have to just do you! Being happy is a key element to health :)

MizFit November 4, 2013 at 6:57 am

(((STANDS AND APPLAUDS!!!!!)

Lee November 4, 2013 at 7:28 am

I think that sometimes we put an awful lot of pressure on ourselves. From reading other blogs, instagram, things our friends are doing, etc. But you have to remember that most people in the world probably wouldn’t be able to do what you’re doing. The same stuff that sometimes feels like not enough.

I’m with you. There are times when I wish I had the medals around my neck or the totally flat abs, but I’m not willing to give up pizza nights or wine (well, I have to give up wine until Feb, but after that!) or frozen yogurt.

kimM November 4, 2013 at 7:36 am

Ok seriously, thanks for keepin it real. I admire your realistic outlook and for pointing out to do what works for you!

Cheri Z November 4, 2013 at 7:44 am

Fantastic post! It really hit home with me on SO many levels. I recently was reading a work-related magazine that had the cover story – “You CAN do it all!” My immediate (and guilty) response was, “Why do I have to? Why do I have to feel guilty if I don’t DO IT ALL?” So, your post came at exactly the right time for me. That permission to make your own choices and be content and NOT guilty about them is something I think women desperately need right now. We get far too many messages about what is right and what we ought to be doing. We get far too few messages about doing what is right for us as individuals. So, great work Janetha! I loved your post and am sharing it with all my frazzled and guilty girlfriends. You rock.

Dori November 4, 2013 at 8:08 am

This post literally made my week/month/year. I did the challenge as a way to get my health/fitness back on track, and I saw results. But I wasn’t willing to give up my social lifestyle either (hello, wine) and the 24 day challenge (and YOU!) taught me that I don’t have to be at the gym 2 hours a day every day and I don’t have to pass up Mexican nights with my girlfriends. I can make everyday choices that impact my lifestyle and achieve MY goals – not the goals everyone else has.

Erica November 4, 2013 at 8:28 am

Great post! You know I always adore your honesty. Its definitely best to listen to your body/gut about what you should be doing for your own health. You look incredible. Glad to hear you’re feeling it too.

The Delicate Place (@misathemeb) November 4, 2013 at 8:29 am

i am more concerned about my diet than spending 2hrs in a gym. i’ve got my life to live! i will never be a fitness competitor simply bc i don’t want to have to eat a sh*t ton so that i can put muscle on. it’s not really a look nate is into either so there’s that ha. i’m content just being me, staying healthy and enjoying exercise as it comes. i like HIIT too rather than long cardio sessions and for me it’s helped me stay lean and mean. just keep doing what you’re doing and stay true to yourself :) x

Shayla b. November 4, 2013 at 8:32 am

best blog post I have read in a very long time. thank you!

Jessica November 4, 2013 at 8:50 am

Oh my gosh…I get behind on blog reading (again!) and you had a seizure? EEK! I hope you are feeling better.

Yeah I really struggle with trying to NOT keep up with Jones. It’s hard because when all you see is a blog post or Instagram, it looks so easy and makes you feel like a slacker for just hitting the gym for 30 minutes and having a scoop of ice cream after dinner. I’m glad you have found what works for you! I’m still trying to figure that our for myself, but I have a feeling my lifestyle will always include ice cream, beer, and cereal – in moderation!

Have a happy Monday, Janetha!!

Janet November 4, 2013 at 8:53 am

Aaaand- THAT’S why you are my favorite fitness blogger ever.
It’s all about choices, all our own.
You rock.

kelly November 4, 2013 at 9:12 am

Love this. I was trying to balance crossfit and distance running and eating super healthy, and it was just too much. I realized that I do enjoy crossfit a lot, but running is my true passion, and my body can’t handle running high mileage and 4-5 crossfit workouts a week.

Do what you love.

Thanks for the post!

Kelsey @ Ramblings of Change November 4, 2013 at 9:45 am

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
On a Monday morning, this is exactly what I needed to read and I think it is going to set the tone right for me. Not only does it apply to my healthy eating and exercise, but I can move it into other parts of my life. I am graduating this December from my undergrad in psychology – and honestly, I’m ready for it to be OVER. This has been the toughest semester mentally for me to get through, and it doesn’t help that I have 20 credits to maintain. I’m planning to take next year OFF and just live life. And I’m okay with that. While others have their looks when I tell them, I know what I need. I’m burnt out on school and work, and I want time to be able to do what I want at home (DIY stuff, blogging) and getting more committed to CrossFit (I want to do open gym but struggle finding time). So thank you for this. I hope to look into Advocare next year too… =)

Nicole C November 4, 2013 at 9:50 am

It’s easy to get caught up, especially on instagram, with wanting to look a certain way. In fact, I probably need to unfollow some people because what they are all about, I am not.

I will tell you this, I plan to change things in the way I eat. This is a pretty huge deal for me. I have a few ideas of what I want to do and direction to take but I need to nail it down. Since you are the first person to ever spark that healthy fitness mind, I may consult you and the advocare products. Things need to change up and unless I do it, no one will. Ben needs to change his habits too and I feel like we impact each other on the negative side. Game on!

Angie @ Pint of Goals November 4, 2013 at 10:27 am

Fantastic post! It’s obvious you know yourself so well and take the time to reflect about what makes you happy. You are a great role model for this reason (and others)!

Cassie @RedLetterDaye November 4, 2013 at 10:55 am

Yay! This is awesome. I appreciate your honesty, and I’m proud of you for finding what works for you. I’m finding what works for me too, and agreed, as much as I admire those girls, I want more of a balance with life and fitness. I don’t want to spend hours at the gym, or eat every meal from tupperware. But I do want to get stronger, build muscle, lose fat, and enjoy food and life. And I do think it’s possible. I’m getting there, slowly but surely. Thanks for posting this! I had a feeling things would turn out this way, but you are setting a great example of finding balance and doing what works for you.

Mollie @Sprinkles of Life November 4, 2013 at 11:08 am

You are so right. you stole the words from my mouth! lol I feel the exact same way. Yes, of course I would love to have the fitness competitor body. I just know I don’t want to put the work in. I would love to knock out a marathon and say I ran one. But i HATE cardio and would never want to spend my Saturday morning on long runs. I admire the people that do and think it’s so awesome! But I know (and am perfectly content) that I do NOT want that as my life. :)

Courtney November 4, 2013 at 11:18 am

I so needed this post, today.

I love your approach on food, fitness and life. It’s definitely something I admire and am trying to find that balance and what works for me. It’s definitely been a journey and you’re definitely an inspiration.

You look fabulous, BTW!

Corrie Anne November 4, 2013 at 11:42 am

You look amazing!!! Good for you finding what works for you and what you WANT to do. I’m working on that balance right now.

LG November 4, 2013 at 12:27 pm

Eggggcellent post! Something that takes a long long time (like, years!)for me but is so worth it is taking bits of things from here and there and finding out what works for me. Carbs at lunch or more fat/protein instead? “Cheat” days? “Off plan” meals? How many days can I commit to working out? How many weights vs cardio days? How do I feel?

The biggest piece of this seems to be “what are my goals”? Someone asked me that the other day and I didn’t hesitate to say “stress relief”. I surprised myself when I said it, because I thought it would be “walk around as lean and cut as I can possibly be”. But the truth is that I don’t have the time/energy for that at this point in my life. So it’s trying to figure out how much I can do without feeling physically or mentally depleted, and how healthy I can eat without feeling deprived and, well, bingeing. Also, how can I balance my “ideal” body goals with making sure to build up my marriage and maintain my other relationships.

Right now I’m doing 6 meals per day (at least on weekdays), and I’m loving it. I have the same dinner as my husband, but a smaller portion, and then I have greek yogurt/honey/walnuts as my nightly snack. This fits in with my “stress relief” goal, because I can plan my meals and not think about it, especially when I’m busy at work. And I like how my body looks and feels.

Colleen November 4, 2013 at 12:28 pm

Great post, Janetha, and lots to think about! I’m glad you’re not down on yourself for knowing what works for you. If it makes you feel better, YOUR routine is the one I strive for… I want to fit in the fun life and the restaurants and splurges, and really throw my all into a short ‘n dirty HIIT routine for workouts, and be happy and balanced. I just started a new workout course via a groupon today, and I was so excited b/c it’s a similar format to GPP… something I’ve been looking for since you started going!

A year and a half ago, I did the LiveFit program, and while it got me into the best shape of my life, it also left me with SERIOUS gym burnout. I realized it just wasn’t worth it TO ME to spend 2+ hours in the gym, 6 days a week, and have such a closely regimented diet. And I’ve felt such a strong workout ennui ever since, until I read about you and GPP and swore I’d find something similar! So remember, you’re an inspiration, too, even if you’re not ‘fitness comp’ level. :)

LG November 4, 2013 at 12:31 pm

Anyway, that was such a great post. Realistic! Also, it’s so refreshing to hear someone say they like their body!

Heather @ Better With Veggies November 4, 2013 at 1:07 pm

first – good for you!! You have to find what is fun if you’re going to stick with it. If it’s not fun at all and not fueling your desire to keep moving, it won’t last. period.

second – i could never eat the same thing all the time! Yikes – the thought of that is very unappealing to me. Now granted, these last two weeks of my prep are going to be boring food, but that’s not what I’ve done for the last 12 weeks and I couldn’t have made it that way. So you don’t have to eat like that to compete. At least not based on my little experience so far. :)

third – I’m so glad you’re honest!

Deb November 4, 2013 at 1:08 pm

I am so glad that you found a balance that leaves you happy with life & happy with the results. It is everything I could ever wish for. Sadly, when I try ‘balance’ my goals get shot, which brings me down. So it’s either feel deprived & have a better physique, or be balanced and sad with the end-result. The answer is to accept a bigger version of me, and I can do all the positive self talk in the world but I can’t fake the acceptance I don’t genuinely feel. You are blessed to have found such a great balance- savor it!

Very excited for you and your path! I wholeheartedly agree that the same plan doesn’t work for everyone! I am excited for you that you found the balance that works and benefits you! AND I am also pumped for you to post your stroganoff recipe :)

This is SUCH a great post. And so so true. We gotta do what WE want to do-for ourselves. And not do it because someone else is doing it. Great thoughts, Janetha!

Following a passion in fitness & good eating is great, but being obsessed with it is not my style, and so I know I’ll never look like a bikini comp. and that is okay with me!

I can’t wait to hit the gym again soon!

janetha! i love this post. it related to me in multiple areas of my life. my latest goal is to: CHILL OUT!!!! i’m such a perfectionist and involved in so many things and have goals for every area of my life that i just run myself ragged trying to do everything to a T. i feel like the country song, “i rush and rush until life’s no fun.” and i want to have fun! there’s no point in working so hard for all of these things if they’re not for yourself. (i mean, within reason…) but to LOVE your body and have FUN – i think that’s fantastic and i’m thrilled for you to be in a good place. i, too, am happy that i can be okay with myself for saying no to something just because I DON’T WANT TO! woohoo! it’s liberating!

best.post.ever. thanks for putting it out there. i struggle with finding the balance that works for me. i have days or weeks where i am exactly where i should be, happy. then i put the pressure on myself that i’m not doing ‘it’ right. well who defines “it”, but me! and i would let the pressure of all the other ways to live your life get to me and the balance will topple over. so now i’m trying to strive to be the best me that i can and to not put pressure on myself. thank you.

First off, you DO look great. I completely understand where you are coming from. I will admit that I have not completed any “challenges” but I do try to push myself in different ways month-to-month, etc. I’d love to have a fitness competitor-worthy bod, but I just don’t want to follow that strict of a plan or spend any more time than I already do at the gym (which is nearly an hour+ daily). I’m in the best shape of my life, look pretty good for a 39 year old mom and just enjoy living and eating healthy about 90% of the time. The other 10% is for Italian cream cake, gyros and pizza.

agree with 100% you said here, we are on the same mindset as you. we don’t want to be a fitness competitor either nor do we want to run marathons, etc. we like our workouts and they way we eat, and have fun and live life :) we don’t want to spend hours and hours in the gym either!
love you for doing this posts!! xoxoxo
PS- you look smokin HOT!

I wish people were as concerned about what’s going on in their hearts and minds as they are about what their bodies look like on the outside. Life is short and there is so much beauty to admire in people that has nothing to do with chiseled abs and toned triceps. I too try to stay healthy by working out and eating well, but I gave up counting calories or even “hitting my macros” and now I just listen to my body. Sometimes I ignore it, and sometimes it tells me to do bad things like eat 2 servings of ice cream, but I’m human, which is to say imperfect.

It’s great to strive for a hot body, but you know some of those “stage ready” women are not healthy on the inside. Be careful about what you think is perfect because it rarely is. Besides, everyone is already enough.

Great post! I appreciate your honesty and that’s why i love reading your blog. You not measuring yourself to others, but rather doing what you WANT to do, is very inspirational!
