mid-week brain dump.

by Janetha on May 23, 2012

in random rambles

i wanted to rhyme in my title by using the word “hump,” but i just could not bring myself to refer to wednesday as “hump day.” i just can’t do it! not even for the sake of rhyming. i know. that’s how much i can’t stand the term.

i do have a lot of random things going on in my brain and thought today was suitable to spew everything into one post.  sure, it may end up being long, but that’s why you keep coming back, right? because you like my rambles, right? sure, ok, i will keep telling myself that. good talk!

#1. winners!

first up, i need to announce the second batch of move more in may winners!

image

the prize for this trimester (may 11-20) is a pair of nunaturals liquid stevia in orange and lemon. speaking of lemon, my lemon blueberry protein scone recipe will be up tomorrow! patience, friends. the four winners of the nunaturals are:

congrats, winners! the prize for entries from may 21-31 will be a contigo thermos (two winners!) and i will also pick one winner from ALL the entries for the whole month to receive a $50 lulu gift card. and no, i can’t win my own giveaway, dang it… (plus, i am providing the card with my own money, so that wouldn’t make sense.)

#2. pants.

i bought these purple pants from my habit in two sizes, with intentions to send back the size that did not fit. but, whoops, missed the return window! so now i have a pair of size 27 purple jeans that are SO cute and need a home.

image (source: myhabit.com)

that’s a horrible outfit paired with them there (in my opinion) but you can see kristen stewart wearing them here and they’re super cute. i did have to get them hemmed, i am a shortie! anyway, if anyone wants them, they’re $58 (regularly $155) and i will ship them for free. just leave a comment. word.

#3. fat check.

marshall wants to get his body composition tested and asked if i’d go with him. i have done this several times before—mostly during my body for life challenge because i was looking to gain muscle and not focus on my overall weight. however, i haven’t been to the bodpod since march of 2010! it’s been awhile. i agreed to go with marshall because that’s what wives are for.

at first i was hesitant about getting my body fat checked because i DON’T know how much i weigh (nor do i care) and i don’t want KNOWING that number to MAKE me care. however, after a little bit of rational thought, i remembered that it’s good to know your body composition and knowing how much i weigh in conjunction with knowing my body composition will actually be a positive thing. knowing this helps give you the bigger picture of overall physical health.  just look at kristen’s body composition testing results from yesterday’s post! while her overall weight didn’t change drastically, her body composition sure did!

the amount of lean muscle a person possesses tells a lot about their overall health. the whole reason marshall wants to get his checked is to make sure he is within a healthy range, and this is something i admire. our appointment is for may 31st.. the day before my birthday! did i mention that marshall has to wear super tight, short shorts to get the testing done? well, yes, happy birthday to me!

for all you utahns who wonder, there is a bodpod up at the U and it’s $25 for a test.

#4. drive.

image
(source: forum.xcitefun.net)

we watched this movie last night and even though it was late and i was SO tired, i couldn’t look away. i usually fall asleep during movies (no matter WHAT—i am a narco!) but this one kept my full attention (and i am paying for it today.. so sleepy!)

but anyway, this movie was awesome! have you seen it? i particularly liked the music in the movie and really want to get the soundtrack!

#5. sucked in to society6.

my iphone case has taken a beating and i am in the market for a new one. i KNEW that the second i searched “owl” on society6.com i would be doomed to a solid half hour of browsing and would be absolutely torn between various covers. i was right. here are a few of the prime candidates:

i love this one because i love coffee and owls—i actually have a print of this framed in my office (thanks, sister!)
image

i love the abstractness of this one.
image

before i loved owls, i loved cats. this has both. it’s cool.
image

i can’t pick!

two cases that had me laughing were these—i couldn’t NOT share them, they’re so strange:

“owlephant”—yep, a cross between an owl and an elephant.
image

“owl fixie”.. um, owls should not have legs. it looks..odd. but, HEY, it’s cool if they ride fixies, right? because owls seem to be pretty hipster these days, and so are fixies, so they go hand in hand. he’s even got the hipster messenger satchel.

image

all images of phone cases taken from society6.com—SUCH a rad website for more than just iphone cases and it supports artists. they take an artist’s work, put it on a case, tshirt, hoodie, canvas, or whatever.. and the artist benefits from it! so cool. check them out.

#7. exciting fitness & food stuff.

as you guys know, i am still working out at GPP and loving it! actually, kristen is meeting me tonight to do the 6:30 workout. it looks like a good one! i met with neil at GPP last night for over an hour to talk about fitness and health and—the exciting part—becoming a trainer. this would be something i’d like to be able to do in the future because i am overwhelmingly PASSIONATE about fitness. i am not interested in it to make money or change my profession to training people. in fact, i’d even be open to training people for free! i just am so passionate about this sort of thing and i want to know more.

i love blogging and feel like i have made a lot of connections with people through sharing my experiences with food, fitness, and overall health. i want to take that knowledge and apply it in life. i want to be able to help people better their overall health goals through the physical aspect.  i am going to work on learning everything i can about fitness and properly training people. of course, fitness and food go hand in hand! i firmly believe that if you are lacking in the food department then your fitness efforts are wasted. both are important, so i am going to be learning lots in the nutrition department, too. i haven’t made a definite decision regarding when and where i will take nutrition classes, but i have decided that it’s something i want to do.

yes, i love my day job and i am not going anywhere, but it’s not giving me the satisfaction that i get from talking food & fitness with people. i am so passionate about this stuff (obviously—my blog is called meals & moves for a reason!) and i just want to know more so i can use my knowledge to help others. it will be a hobby—not a profession—and it’s something i will enjoy and definitely grow from. i’m pretty excited about it all and just wanted to share my enthusiasm!

#8. help a reader open a gym!

one of my readers, natalie lurie, is on a mission! natalie and her husband are embarking on a journey to open a fitness center & they are attempting to raise the money they need. natalie told me that it has been a passion and a calling of theirs for 2 years and they are finally stepping out and taking a chance! (exciting!!) the link below will have more information about their plans. check it out! if it’s something that you feel connected to in any way, natalie would be so appreciative if you would share it with others! even if you can’t donate, spreading the word always helps. here’s the link: http://firstdayfitness.com/

well, how about i leave it at eight? because eight is great! see, i knew i would figure out a way to get some rhyming in the post, after all. leave it to me, the nerdiest girl around.

Q~

if you could open ANY kind of business, what would it be? why? can’t wait to hear your answers and read about your passions! <—that sounded sexy. it wasn’t supposed to.

xo. janetha g.

allison miller May 23, 2012 at 6:17 pm

Hi Janetha! Love those pants- not sure about the size though, some pants are 27s for me, some 28s… Do these run small or bigger? They are so cute!

Katie @ Talk Less, Say More May 23, 2012 at 6:17 pm

i LOVE that coffee/owl case! LOVE that!!
And I kind of had a “business” of managing bands a few years ago. When my band was stolen by a larger company, it kind of ended but I was getting there…haha!

meggi May 23, 2012 at 6:45 pm

oh, if you ever become a trainer – SIGN ME UP! :)

If i could open any business, it would be a “Gift-Giving Business” … I would want to be able to give presents to people all day, every day. It would be more like a company with endless cash flow, where I just surprise people with gifts all day etc. For instance… you submit a person who is amazing and deserves something special for whatever reason… then I take your ideas and I put together this wonderful gift for them. Like trips, and cars, and flowers, and everything else. So random. I know. If I ever won millions of dollars, this is what I would do with it. ha! :)

Mollie May 24, 2012 at 9:46 am

How sweet of a gig would the be?!?! This is a great idea! I hope that endless supply of money comes through soon! ;)

Sana May 23, 2012 at 6:51 pm

I would probably open up a women’s only gym :)

Bears Still Suck May 23, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Congrats to Donald Driver for winning Dancing with the Stars!!!!!

Thanks to everybody who voted for him.

Packer fans are the best fans!

Thanks – Janetha for getting the word out on your blog. I”m sure Marshall is as thrilled as I am!

Krista May 23, 2012 at 6:55 pm

How did I not know you were a Gemini?! High five to a fellow twin!! :) I saw “Drive” without knowing what it was about…I liked the music and loved Ryan, but had to watch some of the scenes through my fingers with my eyes half-closed. The owl/coffee case is my fav! Off to browse society6.com now…

Lauren May 23, 2012 at 6:56 pm

Oh my gosh girl I am SOOOO happy to hear that you are going to pursue a more serious role in the fitness and nutrition counseling. You will be PERFECT for this!

Krista May 23, 2012 at 7:09 pm

p.s. I’d be curious to hear if you have thoughts about the GPP at-home program. I was hoping to watch a demo at-home video to get a feel for it, but I don’t see where to do that without having to first purchase the program.

Neil May 23, 2012 at 9:47 pm

Hi Krista. I know you were asking Janetha for her thoughts, but maybe I can jump in here. Sorry if I overstepped.

The GPP at home stuff is the same thing you’ll find on the gppfitness.com site. The only difference is, I’ve tailored the moves and correlated videos to match similar moves you would have access to at home. We use strictly dumbbells, kettlebells and bands for the home stuff. I did this because most people don’t have barbells and bumper plates, or a pullup rack system. Nor could most folks soak up the expense of this stuff. For Just ONE barbell like we use at GPP you can expect to pay $400 – to start. That won’t even buy you the weights to put on them. Those come in at around $3 per pound. For most people, the shipping alone for this stuff would be cost prohibitive. Although you cannot get the same effect from my workouts without the equipment I use at GPP. I can get you awfully close. And on the cheap by doing the home stuff.

I did this because we get letters from all over the world asking how to use our unique programming at home. In the old days, I would just write back and say, “you can’t.” But then I had a re-think and decided to put the home stuff out there.

If you can alter the daily workouts from the GPPfitness.com site. Go for it. They are free. They have been for 3 years and will forever remain so. The damn things are magic. The results we see daily are truly inspiring (shocking in some cases). If not, you might consider the home stuff. It’s just (almost) $7 per month.

Here is a link to most of our video demos on YouTube. To help you decide. http://www.youtube.com/user/Rewindiet/videos

I don’t have a dog in this hunt. Use GPPfit.com or the home stuff. Don’t care which – just use it. The stuff works.

Krista May 24, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Thanks Neil!

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats May 23, 2012 at 7:28 pm

I love the coffee owl cover! :) If I could open a business I would want to go into people’s homes and do pantry makeovers, teach them how to cook healthier meals, and go grocery shopping with them for healthy foods!

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List May 23, 2012 at 7:35 pm

Too many things to comment on. So I’ll just say this. Still smiling from our phone conversation. :)

lindsay May 23, 2012 at 7:38 pm

you two make me smile.

lindsay May 23, 2012 at 7:37 pm

i totally wanted BLEND to open a gym in Boulder. I could sell healthy bites and we could all teach and have fun!! yea! lets do it!

i like the abstract owl for sure. and just so you know… love ya!

Kristen May 23, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Oh my gosh I lovedddddddd Drive and the soundtrack was so amazing! I’ve been reading your blog for years but I think this is my first comment haha…just glad someone else found that movie SO good!

The Healthy Hipster May 23, 2012 at 8:25 pm

The only things hipsters love more than their fixies is their cats…or maybe their iPhones. So basically that case is the best. :)

Also I just got my body comp done the other day and had similar reservations…in the end I’m glad I did it but you have to remember that it’s just one indicator amongst many of overall health and fitness. If you look great feel great and can bust it up and the gym, girl yer laughin!

Lea May 23, 2012 at 8:26 pm

I want them jeans!

Lea May 23, 2012 at 10:28 pm

I was wrong about my size when I double checked!
Someone else take them who’ll fit them!

Lena @Fit on the Rocks May 23, 2012 at 8:34 pm

Bummer on the jeans because they’re super cute! I have a hard time finding skinny jeans because my calves don’t fit in like 75% of them *sigh* Good luck with the trainer biz! I think you’d be fantastic :)

maria @ mim May 23, 2012 at 8:39 pm

I’m happy to see you’re finally pursuing fitness/nutrition. It’s obvious how passionate you are about it! I LOVED studying for my ACE exam because the material was all so interesting and applicable to my passion.

Heather (Heather's Dish) May 23, 2012 at 8:44 pm

oh man, i think it would be SO fun to have a doggy daycare :) sooooo many puppies to play with!

Neil May 23, 2012 at 9:53 pm

You would be an amazing trainer! Your passion combined with your ability to help others would be unmatched.

I can think of no one better.

Sign me up for your first boot camp. I’m in!

Amanda May 23, 2012 at 10:04 pm

That’s rad about the trainer stuff. Especially if you are passionate about it, doing something you love makes life so much better. I absolutely love teaching and the intrinsic rewards it brings me. I think doing what you love as a side project is awesome. Go Janetha!

Can you train me? haha. I wish!

I would love to learn more about nutrition and help others who struggle with emotional eating recover someday. I’m not ready yet, but eventually I want to look into volunteering one day. I feel like I have a lot to share.

Carly May 23, 2012 at 10:35 pm

I have heard mixed reviews about Drive….about a 50/50 split. You might have convinced me to check it out.

Hmm if I could open any business….probably a counselling center that used exercise, being outside, arts/crafts or games in practice. And we’d probably serve ice cream.

Katie h. May 23, 2012 at 11:27 pm

You should definitely become a personal trainer – it’s obvious you’re passionate about health and fitness! I’m starting a group fitness instructor class in 2the weeks and I’m stoked!

I have a passion for fitness, even if I am not in tip top shape. I would love to do something fitness related for sure. I’ve also thought a few times that I would love to be a labor and delivery nurse, or a physical therapist.

sherice@foodieluvsfitness May 23, 2012 at 11:44 pm

Your so funny! I love reading your blog.
My passion is food and fitness! I was in school to get my Bachelors in Exercise Physiology and Metabolism and realized that my right brained self couldn’t deal with the math stress. So there are many different roads to get to where I want to be and I’m planning on ordering my trainers stuff from NASM by the 1st of June! It’s been a long time coming but like you said, It’s something that I’m so passionate about. I want to share it with the world! Another thing I’m passionate about is eating organic foods and spreading the word about GMO foods. My 60 something uncle didn’t even realize that GMO even existed and my aunt and uncle are very healthy vegans.. He was amazed! It is our right as human beings to know where our food comes from and what’s in it!

Mel May 23, 2012 at 11:56 pm

I think I would love to have some sort of role writing and advising about relationships (romantic or otherwise). It would involve getting my master’s or PhD and then being able to run a Love Boot Camp and do research on relationships. I get so geeked up about that topic.

Betty May 24, 2012 at 12:06 am

I WANTED TO GET THAT OWL/COFFEE PRINT FOR MY KITCHEN! I need to find good art.. I want to throw everything in the mix and i has no clue where to look. That owl is def a possibility.

I always said if I won the lottery.. Or knew I could live comfortably quitting accounting I would open my own doggie daycare or shelter. A mile down the road from our new house there is a golden retriever farm.. Is it bad I want to knock on their door and ask to let their pups?

Betty May 24, 2012 at 12:07 am

I has no clue? Wtf. Obvi my brain knows its too late to be functioning!

Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl May 24, 2012 at 12:07 am

I like the 3rd phone case. ;)

Sierra May 24, 2012 at 1:24 am

The owl coffee one is my favorite. I have never heard of that site, but now I’m going to go check it out since my work mobile needs a new case.

Exciting that you are taking the leap into being an instructor. I loved my course to become a group exercise instructor, it’s so much about leadership and being a motivator. You do that so much through your blog that this is an easy transition. Cannot wait to hear more.

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva May 24, 2012 at 3:46 am

I am super passionate about fitness too. I could go on and on, but usually people get bored so I don’t really say much unless explicitly asked. That’s why I love the blogging world…I can finally share my passions! A few years ago I became a qualified PT, and pilates instructor. I did lots of work in Pilates before deciding to go back to uni and study exercise science. And well here we are now!!

I’d love to combine my knowledge of training and nutrition to help people reach their fitness goals. My main goal would be to encourage a focus on strength and fitness NOT just aesthetics. Health should be the goal here…and looking hot should be an awesome side effect!

Really happy you are pursuing your passion…can’t wait to hear more xox

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning May 24, 2012 at 5:58 am

I DEFINITELY think that you should be getting paid to train people. Even as a part-time job! Let me tell you from someone who knows from experience- there is no feeling like getting paid to help people get healthy and strong. And it’s so exciting to watch people get in shape and lose weight and know that you had a small part in that.
Plus, getting paid to work out it pretty awesome too. :)
My dream job would be to have my own personal training business- focusing on women during and post pregnancy to stay/get back into shape. It WILL happen one day- and hopefully soon! :)

Michelle May 24, 2012 at 7:43 am

I’ve always wanted to open a used book store. I would have a nice sitting area at the front of the store where my basset hound Flash could lounge all day and greet people. I know so many people are using e-readers now but I don’t think books will ever truly go away.

Carbzilla May 24, 2012 at 7:45 am

Can I just fly you out to Seattle 4 times a year to set up my workout? I swear I’m all intimidated by the gym again! I wouldn’t know how to do Jamie’s program in there if my life depended on it.

Becky May 24, 2012 at 8:25 am

Hey Janetha! It’s Becky from the “Bad Asses” ;) Are the jeans still available? I LOVE them, I LOVE purple, and I’m a 27!

Kristi @ Sweetly Fit May 24, 2012 at 8:25 am

I wish you would be MY trainer. ;) I think you would be awesome at involving fitness and nutrition and am excited that you are pursuing something like this. I’m sure it won’t disappoint!

Annette@FitnessPerks May 24, 2012 at 8:29 am

Haha. I just love you. And YES we do come for the rambles b/c they’re great! :)

So cool that you’re thinking about adding in some food/fitness hobbies. It is THE best ever!! So did ya know for several years I worked at a wellness center and we had a BodPod and I ran it?! So yes, all those guys in tight shorts….sometimes it was QUITE awkward. Haha. After I got engaged, my now-husband was like, ummmmm, do you still have to do that?! Hahahaha.

I say go with the FIRST owl cover!! LOVE.

Alyssa @ Life of bLyss May 24, 2012 at 8:58 am

oh please. don’t act like you’re not getting the case with the owl riding a bicycle.

Mollie May 24, 2012 at 9:32 am

My passion is health and nutrition as well. Specifically kids! I have a degree in Nutrtion Science and would LOVE to have a daycare and teach many classes about health and eating the right things to grow their little bodies. Or not even a daycare but any avenue to teach kids about healthy eating. It makes me sad and angry at the same time when I see an overweight child. They get a rough start from the beginning. Kids should learn early about eating healthy and junk food in very little moderation so they can grow into healthy adults…..ok, enough rambling. I could go on ALL. day. long! :)

Heather @ Fit Mama Real Food May 24, 2012 at 10:23 am

We just watched Drive too. Loved it!

Jessica May 24, 2012 at 10:31 am

I think I would like to have some sort of coffee shop/bakery/cafe situation. I’ve always thought that would be like, the coolest job ever.
Also getting paid to play with puppies. That would be pretty sweet.

Becky@MunchingVeggies May 24, 2012 at 10:33 am

DRIVE was crazy good. Love the first owl case.

And as for starting a business – it would definitely be in the area of treating people with health issues holistically. I am tired of all the stories I personally hear of doctors shoving meds at people, that just makes them sicker (’cause I was one of them), when some good nutrition, natural remedies and good old fashioned fitness would solve most of the health problems we have in this country.

Sorry- I’ll get off my soapbox now. Guess it IS a passion!

Alicia Acord @ fitmixer May 24, 2012 at 10:34 am

Ryan Gosling, A-freaking-mazing.

Love all the cases, I can’t decide. Now I’m going to go pick one out for me!

Yay for your new adventure in food and fitness! Neil is the best!!

I wish I could buy those purple pants. I love purple!

Christin May 24, 2012 at 10:34 am

mmmmm Ryan Gosling…swoon! But not enough of his abs in Drive (lol) great soundtrack though for sure!

My vote is for the coffee owl phone case…the heart one kinda creeps me out! hehe

I did my body composition recently for Tina’s boot camp and i’m glad I did…my weight didn’t change too much, but my composition definitely did! I don’t weigh myself often because I just don’t like to know, but focusing on the overall composition is much more helpful I think. :)

Have a great day!

Christin May 24, 2012 at 10:38 am

did you see this case? it’s awesome!
http://society6.com/product/Warrior-Owl_iPhone-Case

Janetha May 24, 2012 at 10:48 am

I did! But it’s a lot like my current one, and I want something new. Here is the pic of the one I have now: http://janetha.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/img_1494.jpg

(From this post: http://mealsandmovesblog.com/2011/04/19/bullets/)

Christin May 24, 2012 at 11:01 am

ohhh! Yeah that’s a cool cover! Might as well get something new and different though for sure! :)

melissa May 24, 2012 at 11:22 am

I am behind on my bodpods too. I haven’t had one done since November. I keep meaning to schedule one, but since I can eat or workout before, and the place is about 30 miles from home, I have to do it on a DOR before work….which also means I actually have to remember to schedule it!

I should go do that now

Tara @ Sweat like a Pig May 24, 2012 at 11:25 am

It’s awesome that you’re becoming a trainer. It’s obviously something that you’ve been passionate about for some time, so it’s natural to want to pursue it – wherever the qualification may take you. I wanted to get my PT certification just to have it, but things evolve and now I’m managing a PT studio!

My dream (and it’s not really a dream anymore, because I know it’s going to happen!) is to open my own studio. I want to open something grungy and raw, targeted towards women (but men are welcome too) where women can lift hard and heavy weights. I think a lot of women want to try weight lifting, but are intimidated by the existing gym environments out there, and the current women-only gym are not cutting it! There will be no cute barbie weights or Zumba classes at my gym ;)

Sidney May 24, 2012 at 11:28 am

Hey I would be interested in the pants if they aren’t already spoken for!! R they true to size?

Cat @ Breakfast to Bed May 24, 2012 at 11:58 am

personal training and meal delivery. The food would be organic, and the personal training would be snarky.

Calee May 24, 2012 at 12:06 pm

I don’t like “hump day” either. I used it for my “hump day blog lovin'” back in the day and I nearly cringe when I write a post about it. I did it originally because I thought it was funny to have “hump” and “lovin'” in the same phrase.

If I were to open any sort of business? A crafty boutique. And I would be working hours that allowed me to do whatever the hell I wanted, whenever the hell I wanted, so I wasn’t sitting on my ass the whole time (craft shows suck the LIFE out of me).

Heather @ Better With Veggies May 24, 2012 at 12:42 pm

We’ve talked about opening a bed & breakfast, although I also LOVE coaching running & triathlon. We could have the weirdest (and coolest!) b&b around with a plant-based menu & running/triathlon activities. :)

Jocelyn @ Peace Love Nutrition May 24, 2012 at 2:04 pm

I would love to open up a craft store! And have all different homemade treats and crafts

Anna May 24, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Exciting! I enrolled in an introduction to nutrition class at the local community college 3 years ago…and now I have a b.s. in dietetics and am about to start my internship to get my RD. Crazy where life takes you!

If I could open any business it would be a fitness clothing store! With food! And coffee :)

Beth @ Running on Cloud Nine May 24, 2012 at 2:32 pm
