hello! time for another round of answers to the questions that i have received through my “ask me anything” question box (found in my sidebar to the right.)
before i get started, i wanted to link back to the past installments of answers because some of the questions i have received recently are ones that i have already answered—or at least are very similar to ones i have answered. instead of repeating myself, you can just click on the past installments to check my answers out.
let’s get crackin.
Q: It would be fun to have a description of some of Marshall’s tattoos and meanings behind them.
A: you may be surprised to hear this, but marshall doesn’t like talking about his tattoos. i think that, very often, the assumption is made that people who are covered in tattoos want to discuss them. not in his case! he usually brushes off any tattoo questions that come his way.
while i am not huge on tattoos on myself (i do have one, more on that below), i do think they are beautiful on other people. i have several friends who are tattoo artists and their talent simply amazes me! marshall has lots and lots (and lots) of tattoos.. they all have meaning to him, but like i said, he doesn’t prefer to talk about them. however,there are a few of them that are MY absolute favorite, so i will share those with you today.

coffee love. i love this mug of coffee on his palm because I LOVE COFFEE! the only photo i had of it was him holding my ring, i’m not tryin’ to be flashy. ha.
charles. he has a shark on his hand. i named it charles. it just felt right.
Q: Hi Janetha! As a male blog reader, I’m actually really admiring marshall’s transformation! Any advice on how he did it and also his typical diet? You both are inspiring!
A: haha.. my shy husband is going to absolutely hate this post. two questions about him in a row! but as far as his “transformation” goes, i am not sure what this refers to. marshall has always been in great shape! he’s only been worried about gaining weight, never losing it, so he eats as much as he possibly can. some of his staples: fruit & veggie juice each morning, chobani or fage greek yogurt, bagels, oatmeal, PRO BARs, sandwiches, ready to drink protein shakes (premier protein and core power are the two brands), cereal, annie’s brand organic spaghettio’s, and whatever i make for dinner. i am glad he prefers to eat healthfully—it makes things easy in the kitchen!
as far as workouts go, he lifts about 5 days a week and devotes about an hour to each workout: chest, bis/tris, back, shoulders, and legs. he has been working more on his core lately, too. he also loves using kettlebells at home. we have a pullup bar at our house, too, and he will do pullups whenever the mood strikes! he’s not big on cardio, but if you ask him to race you he will win any day of the week. in addition to working out, marshall is on his feet all day at work. he does heavy lifting and other manly tasks on the job that require strength. that alone could count as a workout, if you ask me! (and you did.)
Q: How many tattoos do you have and what are they of/for?
A: like i said above, i am not big on tattoos for myself. but i do have one:
my dog, mable, almost exactly five years ago on september 1, 2007. it was sudden and unexpected (she was hit by a car.) when she died, i felt a strong urge to get her name tattooed on myself.. so i did. my friend, nick, is a tattoo artist and he zapped it on my wrist in under five minutes. i do like my tattoo because i LOVE mable to bits, but looking back… i probably would not have gotten the tattoo if i thought about it for awhile. it’s not that i regret the tattoo, i love it and the meaning behind it. they just aren’t for me.
Q: Have you heard of the website/message board that criticizes/critiques bloggers?
A: yep, i used to read it all the time. there was a thread about my blog and sometimes the things written were offensive and/or not true, while other times the anonymous posters had a good point. i got caught up in replying to the posts that were about me—both good and bad. at the end of the day i realized that reading and replying to things about myself that are better left behind my back was not doing anything for me in the long run. this website became a time suck for me, so i stopped visiting the site all together. i do get google alerts or traffic hits from the website when my name or blog name is mentioned, but i have decided to refrain from reading anything on the site.
as i mentioned before, i was raised mormon. one of their mottos is “choose the right”. even though i am no longer active in the church, i still stick to this motto. i try to be my best at all things in life—including this blog—and some people aren’t going to like it. some people are going to talk about it. that’s normal.. it would be weird if everyone agreed with everything that i do or don’t do! and that’s perfectly fine with me.
Q: How did you meet Marshall?
A: oh. man. another question about my shy husband. he is shaking his head if he is reading this… anyway, marshall and i met at work. we worked together for two years before we started dating. he worked in the shop building windows and i worked in the office. we saw a lot of each other and became great friends… then more than friends! we still work together, except he has since been promoted and works out in the field while i work in my office. this arrangement is much better for our relationship!
i will say that working at the same company as your spouse can be a slippery slope at times. it has caused some hiccups for us. we definitely have a harder time separating work and home since we share the same work and the same home. i try to refrain from talking about work too much when we are home.. but it is inevitable! that said, it is something that can work. many spouses work at the same company—shoot, several couples even START their own company together. and if it wasn’t for the company we work for, we’d never have met.
Q: What breed is Penny?
A: PENNY!
she will be so flattered that a question was asked about her. penny, also known as penelope jane, penny bean, little head, or penalee, is half entlebucher half cavalier. here’s the story. after mable died (see above) i wanted another dog.. but i didn’t know what kind. then i saw an entlebucher on animal planet. i fell in LOVE!

an entlebucher is the smallest of the four types of swiss mountain dogs, the other three being greater swiss, bernese, and appenzeller. i was a big lab lover, but i also fell in love with swissys when i was in switzerland in 2001. i figured the entlebucher was the best of both worlds! the only downside was that purebred entles were a whopping $1200 and nowhere to be found. THEN my roommate at the time (thanks, jessiker!) found a litter of mixed breed puppies. the mom was an entlebucher and the dad was a cavalier. the breeder breeds entlebuchers and their house pet is a cavalier. i guess they got busy one night!
anyway, these pups were $450, which was way better than $1200, so i decided to purchase one. i didn’t even know what a cavalier was, i’d seen them before, but wasn’t familiar with the breed. i figured half entlebucher was good. the breeder was in pennsylvania, so penny had to fly here. coincidentally, one of her brothers was purchased by someone who also lives here in salt lake city! WHAT THE WHAT? so random. this was the best because the pups were able to travel together in the same crate. here we are at the airport picking them up, kramer on the left, penny on the right:
awwwee. fun fact: kramer’s owner and i have connected through facebook and we will be reuniting the pups sometime soon! i can’t wait.
anyway, i thought penny was going to get pretty big—maybe 50 pounds or so. i bought a large collar, a big crate, and got this pint-sized little bean of a dog. hilarious. and amazing! penny is 30 lbs full grown and she actually still looks like a puppy. i love that she has the stature of a large dog but is just shrunken down to a smaller size. it’s like someone left her in the dryer too long.
i love penny so much and wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world… but i do think that our next pup will come from a shelter rather than a breeder. i was hell bent on getting a specific breed of puppy, but i should have been more concerned with giving a home to a pup that needed one. many people ask where they can get a breed like penny, but the truth is that she was a mistake and you can’t just go buy an entlebucher cavalier.
so, yep, there’s the long answer—penny is an entlebucher cavalier. except sometimes she is a bat.

I have an akita, and I oft say that shiba inus look like someone put an akita in the dryer on high for too long.
I also think that penny should be a headband model, mostly because they’re always looking for someone with a petite dome. Her dome is more petite than most. I love it.

I don’t have tattoos–they are so not for me. And no animals either. Yikes! Right now is not the time for pets, but maybe later!
Negative on the tattoos, my brother handles that part of our family. He too, like Marshall, prefers to not explain them to people. He actually gets really defensive about it and recently had some rude remarks when he replied, ‘they don’t have any meaning’ and the remarks was ‘well that’s a big mistake’…and then next works were not rated for this blog.
As you probably know, I have an Italian Cane Corso Mastiff (Kronus P. Kinkle – he was 107 lbs. at 1 year old..I’m guessing maybe 155ish now) and a mini daschund (Roxy – 9.2 lbs)..oh and I’ve had a swimming turtle for over 15 years, his name is Scuba Steve.
funny you should ask the tattoo thing. i am in the market for my very first one! it’s been a very difficult year for me (i don’t really get into it on the blog) but i feel like this is a step that will allow me to see the strength that i have demonstrated and that i can make it through tough times! nate is going to get one with me!
i don’t have any pets right now since our landlords don’t allow it but i want a pug! :)

I have a butterfly tattoo on my right wrist! I’m from Germany and my dream was always to go to the USA and live there for a while. So I saved money and in 2010, I finally did it. I was the best 4 months of my life and a great experience. I got my tattoo in San Francisco (where I spent the 4 months) and for me, it represents that I can do anything if I want to (like, just going to another country/continent all by myself and be totally fine). In SF, I also met my now-husband :) now I live in Toronto with him. I can’t wait to get more tattoos!
I love how much you love your dogs! We have 2 rottweilers that are great big teddy bears – I couldn’t imagine life without a dog, or two, to share it with :-)

i think i’m gonna get RJ tatted on my arm like M. hahah i’ve allllllways wanted a tattoo and my dad always said that he hoped i respected him enough to never get a tattoo. (he ALWAYS wanted one also, but his mother hated them, so he never got one) ..that being said, i would love to get something between my sister and i, since we’re best friends, maybe sisters in a unique language..
obviously i have my spoiled brat of a dog and then 3 by marriage. i looove big dogs and would love a newfie (wanted one since i volunteered at a pet hospital when i was 12). i have fallen in love with sadie (beagle) and would love another, when we get back down to 1 or two, cause I can’t handle 4 dogs again. i’m with you tho, from not on, i want to make it a point of rescuing from shelters, there are too many dogs in there to keep buying from breeders :(

I’ve always kind of wanted a tattoo, but never had anything I thought was meaningful enough for me to actually want to do it. Plus I’ve had several jobs where I would definitely be asked to cover it, and that will probably continue as a teacher. I once had a boyfriend with tattoos, and that was better than me having to do it. hah

Boyd’s a Boykin Spaniel. Nobody ever knows what that is, but basically he’s a chocolate brown spaniel. He’s the grumpiest pain in the butt, but I love him & all my friends think he’s hilarious.
Pippa is a Chocolate Lab/Vizsla mix. It was hard, but I patiently waited for my girl to become available through a rescue, and I would definitely suggest that route for people. She’s a doll. Although she won’t stop dropping a tennis ball in my lap right now!

Do henna tattoos count?
I have one tattoo, on the back of my neck..Chinese symbol that means strength. I know its a little cliche and super trendy. But it was something that I felt at the time I needed to remind me that I was stronger than any situation surrounding me.
I wouldn’t have done it now, as I am in the most fantastic place in my life. But at the time, I needed the reminder.

i love my two pups to bits as well. they’re both lab mixes – capone is lab/german shepherd & we got him from a friend of a friend whose dogs made a friend down the road…oops! jake is a lab/crazy dog mix. we got him from a rescue and don’t know what breeds he’s a mix of. i think he’s lab/italian greyhound/boxer or pitbull.
i want a basset and a great dane so badly but brad practically threatens to leave me if i bring home another dog! hah!

Speaking of Marshall, I just realized on Sunday that he is in our fantasy football league. I was checking out the scores of everyone’s games and his name jumped out at me. I thought, hmmm, I wonder if this is Janetha’s Marshall. So I asked my husband if he knew who Marshall was and then I showed him his picture that you had just posted on your blog for the protein bars and shakes giveaway and he said, Yeah, that’s him. What a small world, huh? And he is a force to be reckoned with! I think he was the high scorer of the week. I’m always afraid when I have to play his team :) (I’m Mr. Roboto). I’m happy to have made this connection, because it makes it more fun to know who your opponent is.

Joe is my husband. And it’s the Audio Specialists League. If your husbands not in this league then there is someone else who looks like him and has his same name out there, and that would be totally weird :/

I don’t have any tattoos, but I have an Ironman one designed that I have never had the guts to commit to. One day, I’ll actually do it. :)
I do have a tattoo . . . it’s a small red heart on my lower, left back. I love it–would change it. It was taken from the raggedy ann dolls (they had a heart on them) that I grew up obsessed with!
No tattoos, too scared to commit. I have three dogs; miss emma the Havanese cross, Cooper the poodle cross and finally Sydney the Maltese cross. This is what happens when you volunteer at an animal shelter. I love my dogs but three is my limit. My hubby has allergies so all our dogs are the non-shedding variety of mutt.
I get to hug penny next year. marshall too.

I own a Shetland Sheepdog. I’m obsessed with her. Her name is Kirby Lane. (Named after my favorite restaurant). I want another sheltie SOOO bad. Probably within the next year I’ll get another.
My family is totally a sheltie family. My mom has 2 and my sister has 2.
I have definitely been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo on my wrist. I’ve always loved it and I’ve always wanted one. I just can’t decide what to get and until inspiration strikes, I don’t want to get anything I would regret.

I have two tattoos. I got a small daisy on my hip when I turned 30. And I have taoism symbol for “creative power” on my upper butt cheek ;). I got that tattoo on a trip I took to Lake Tahoe that was very eye opening trip for me. I competed in an adult gymnastics meet (yes, I was 35 years old!), and I won the all around competition. I also conquered a HUGE fear I had of heights, by rock climbing some of the most amazing and hard climbs in Tahoe. It was a very liberating and inspiring trip. Got the tatt to remember the trip and remind myself that I can do anything I set my mind too. I am my own limitation.
I want another tattoo (possibly on my wrist) with my kids’ initials. Need to find a great artist to create my vision. Any suggestions?
Oh…and I have my sweet, sweet Chloe! A Mal-Shi (maltese/shitzu mix)

1) I don’t. I might one day but I’d probably spend too long think about it instead of getting it done.
2) I don’t have any pets, but am rather obsessed with the idea of owning several large dogs :) First there is Buzz (full name Buzz Danger), who will be a Dalmatian, then Rocky the rocweiller (sp?!), then Roary the Rhodesian ridgeback (they used to be used to hunt lions!), then an Irish water hound (currently unnamed) and a black Labrador. Oh, and a comedy sausage dog called Duck :)

I have 1 tattoo, and kinda like you I don’t regret it per se and still like it, but if I had the choice now I wouldn’t have it. No big.. still means something, but they aren’t for me either.
Also, thought I’d contribute that I met my man at work, and we worked together for the 1st 1.5 years of our relationship.. at a bar ,so we Worked together like in each others faces and spaces constantly. And I loved it and we both miss it now! But I do remember it can be hard to stop talking about work at home… gossiping, etc. worth it though, so fun :)
I have 2 tattoos and I have my next 2 planned out! The ones I have now are a small treble clef on my hip and a rather large 50s style condenser microphone that says “sing as if no one is listening.” Both are very meaningful for me and the next two I have planned (possibly 3!) are as well.
I have a co-worker friend who has a lot of tattoos – half sleeves and others, but she is very shy about them and covers them up at work and doesn’t really want to talk about them.
No tats for me and I have a golden retriever (the best golden retriever in the world, I might add!)
I LOVE that your next dog will be a rescue. That is awesome! In 2007 I decided I was ready to adopt a dog, and went through a rescue group that my friend runs in Ohio (I live in Detroit, MI). My boy, Paisley, is like a golden retriever that someone left in the dryer too long. He is just like Penny: stature of an adult dog, just miniature. I think he is a mix of golden retriever and cocker spaniel, but I’m not sure since he originally was rescued from a pound where some dummy left him. He is everything to me. Rescue dogs are the best! Also, more generally: you rule.

That last photo of Penny as a batdog made me “aww” out loud! There has got to be food in the background of that photo, I see a familiar twinkle in the eyes there.
I think it’s weird that people feel so comfortable asking what tattoos mean. Now that I just got my first one I’ll probably just start making up something ridiculous, as the real meaning behind the image and location is very personal. I definitely want more tattoos and have a sailboat planned for my right arm if my chest scan in October is clear. I really like the idea of getting to choose my own “scars” and will feel lucky if I live long enough to see my tattoos fade with age ;)

Penny is too cute. A little while back, I commented on how I thought she was an adorable beagle…womp womp…stupid me. But as a puppy, she looks JUST LIKE my beagle puppy did, her coloring and big ears! But as soon as you said she was cavalier/bernese, I totally saw it. My best friend is a starting her first year in veterinary clinics, and she taught me everything I ever wanted to know (and way more over the last 15+ years) about dogs. She has a pure cavalier and that dog is textbook perfect. You have great taste in dogs! (I’m also a hound fan…I love Randy). I don’t have a dog right now, but I’m dying for a Cavalier, Norwich, or a West-Highland terrier. One day, when I can give it the time and attention he needs! =)
I have four tattoos right now, hopefully adding a 5th one within the next month or two – one for every year I’ve been legal. I adore them, but I don’t want to go too crazy with them. Marshall is brave for getting one on his palm, that couldn’t have felt nice!
I’m really hoping to get a pug soon – pretty sure they’re the cutest dogs ever.
I think tattoos can be really sexy but I don’t have any. The only way I would get something is if it had a really deep meaning to me. I would pick my wrist as well and for some reason I think white ink would be really cool. Call me crazy. lol. As for pets, I don’t have any here because I work 12 hour night shifts. I just don’t think I would be able to give a dog the attention it deserves. Someday I really want one though! I think a german shepherd or great dane would be sweet along with a tiny dog like a maltese. lol. Rescuing is definitely something I would rather do though!

I have 4 tattoos, 2 of which hold a ton of meaning for me, 2 of which I still love, but were more just for fun than for purpose. It’s funny because I can easily hide my tattoos with clothing, so I still get a kick out of people I have known for years seeing me in a bathing suit for the first time. A bit of a shocker for them usually.
I don’t have dogs, but I have a cat named Scot, and he is insane. I kind of got tricked into owning him, and I am so grateful for it! A woman at work took in a stray cat who ended up being pregnant and she suckered me into a kitten. Seriously the best mistake ever. Pets are just the best.
Always interesting to hear tattoo stories. I never have had the urge to get one, but I have a few piercings…as for pets I don’t have one right now:( I had a cat. Right now I get my creature comfort volunteering at a cat shelter. Sort of a win-win situation-I get to pet kitties, the shelter gets some mopping or cleaning or whatever needs doing done…
we are big dog lovers around our house. We have 2 Boston terriers.. Marley 7 & Luka is a yr. I totally commend you for wanting to get a shelter dog.. I strongly believe in being a responsible pet owner and spaying and neutering your pets.. Our boys are both neutered as we didn’t want to breed them. I commend you for getting a shelter dog your next go around. we’ve gone that route in the past but it always seemed that there was an issue so that is why we decided on a breeder. Of course Bostons are the best dogs ever (wink Wink) isn’t it funny how they are like our children of course we think the breed we have it the best. :)
I have 1 tattoo of a seahorse on my right shoulder. I always wanted to add 2 baby seahorse for my kids but then found out that the male seahorse is actually the one that carries and gives birth… I got it when I was 21 from a friend of a friend and it’s really not a great piece so I will get it covered eventually.. with what?? that has yet to be decided. But my next one is going to be a saying I heard that really struck me.. I spend a lot of time living in the past and not in the moment.. so I thought this was fitting.. “Looking in the past blinds me to my future” just a reminder to live in the now and with no regrets! any good ideas of placement.. I’m thinking wrist so I can see it everyday!
What is it with having two dogs? Almost everyone I know had two dogs, including my family!
We have two dogs:
1. Penny-Su who is a boxer-rottie mix. She’s 12ish years old and we got her at a shelter about 11 years ago. She is the sweetest dog ever (and my first dog ever). This dog is so awesome, I wanted another one just like her to add to our family.
2. Piper Mint who is a puggle. She’s a wacky looking puggle too with two different colored eyes (blue and hazel) and a marled ears/snout. She’s an 11 months old ball of energy. We actually had no intention on buying a specific breed (said loosely), let alone a designer breed. However, we could find zero dogs that fit into our family (with small kids and dog) when we were looking. Honestly, we went to our local animal control shelter 6 times in 4 weeks and found that most dogs weren’t even adoptable, and the ones that were couldn’t be placed in a home with kids or a dog. Oh there was one dog who required 3 shots of insulin a day. After the 6th disappointing trip, my husband and I needed a pick-me-up and walked into a pet store to stare at the animals and pet accessories. There, our little Piper stole my heart (and a good chunk of my pay check). Best money we spent all year.
I dont’ have any tatoos because they just aren’t for me.
My husband has several. They appear to be addicting! Right now, he’s trying to get his favorite Chinese Food (orange chicken) tatooed on his arm so he can order by holding up his arm. The problem is that there is no direct translation in Mandarin (per our research and chatting with friends who know the language); the mandarin translation in the menus just means Prepared Chicken (or something like that).
I have one tattoo (so far; I have one or two others that I may like to get, including a pisces symbol that’s also a yin/yang, but it’s nothing urgent), three overlapping stars (one red, one blue, and one purple) on the back of my right shoulder. My two sisters and I all have the same exact tattoo in the same spot, and each star represents one of us, in our favorite color. I love it! I would only get tats that had a lot of meaning to me and this one certainly does. We got it when I was 40, my middle sister was 30, and our little sister had just turned 18!
My husband and I have two cats, a brother and sister. The boy is all black (with a few white chest hairs) named Mal and the girl is a tortie named Inara. They’re named after characters on the show Firefly. In fact, my husband had just gotten them shortly before we met and showed me a pic of the kittens. When I found out their names, we ended up bonding over our mutual love of Firefly. And from there we were on our way to falling in love! XD
I just got my first tattoo this past summer! It is a tree of life on my back. I knew I really wanted to get one this summer, but this was not the tattoo I thought would be my first one. It just felt like the right time to get it, and so I did!
It is beautiful and I love it and show it off whenever possible!
Also I have a yorkie and a fat ass russian blue cat. They are the best of friends and fight like my sister and I did back in the day (which is funny because judy is my dog and veronica is my sister’s cat).
I only have one tattoo. I got the first part when I was 18 and feeling badass. It was a sun with a sun and a moon inside. It was small, horribly done, and it was suppose to be a tramp stamp, but was too high up on my back. A year and a half ago I went through several procedures to have cancer removed (all while having a broken foot) I decided to touch up the tattoo. If I was going to have it for life it better look better. A friend of mine took the existing tattoo and turned it into a compass. It is much larger, but far more proportional and has so much more meaning. Although, talking to my 18 year old self, I would not have gotten it in the first place.
We have two dogs. An australian shephard/lab and a st.bernard/aussie shephard. We adopted both. One from a free litter of pups and one from the human society.
I love tattoos, just not on me… I know a lot of people get tattoos to represent important things/moments in their life and I decided a few years ago to instead buy a really nice piece of art anytime something significant happens in my life, that way every time I look at it I am reminded of that moment in my life.
I wish I had a dog, I grew up with a golden lab but she passed away when I was in grade 12…my twin sister has a great dog, shepard cross that i’m in love with and often doggysit for her, she also has her own dog walking company so if i’m really missing dog time I just call her up and go for a hike with her…I am however hoping to get a dog in the near future, from a rescue, i’m just working on convincing the bf its a good idea :)
I am also a lover of tattoos with virgin skin…that is until this friday. I’ll be getting my first, and probably last tattoo. My beautiful grandmother passed away in March. She was an artist and had recently created this new way she was going to sign her art before she got sick. She never got to put that stamp on any of her art…so I’m going to put it on my wrist. My mom is coming with me as we honor my grandmother, Flo Rogers on friday.
I have a lab-rottie mix named Bella. She’s the best 90 lb lap dog you ever met! I also have two cats…Boo (who thinks she is a dog) and Scout who I also call “jabba the scout” and “tons of fun”. :)

Tattoos? I have two. A devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. I love them, but I often forget I have them. I want another one to represent my son.
Animals? Yes. I have two dogs, both rescues. Jack is a miniature schnauzer (purebred as far as we can tell). Buffy is a (male) goldendoodle from L.A. who refuses to poop on grass (only concrete). We also have a chinchilla (Aren’tAMouse), a Guinea Pig (Hershey Bear), and saltwater fish (Not Norman, a Fish Named Sue, Angle, and Frank). In the future we want a giant schnauzer. Love those dogs.
I do not have any tattoos but I have wanted to get one for a long time (also on the inside of my wrist). We’ll see if it ever happens…
I have two dogs, both of which are Golden Retrievers. Moose weighs 109 lbs. (and is just big, not overweight) and blond and Frankie is just over 90 lbs. and red (like an Irish Setter).
no tattoos for me! they aren’t for me either. I also work in the health care field, and we can’t have any showing. And I have seen what they look like years down the road….haha
I have one tattoo on my right butt cheek of a dragonfly. it took me about 5 years to decide and i love it. people always ask why i have it there when no one can see it and i always say because i didn’t get it for you!
