hey guys!
before i dive into flashback friday, i want to take a minute to tell you about my appointment this morning. i went to see a motility specialist about my gut issues. if you are just joining us, you can read about my issues here, here, here, and even here.
anyway, i went to a motility doc today to see why the crap i can’t crap. ever. i won’t go into details because you really don’t want to hear where he put his finger or what i had to do.. but the outcome of the long, long appointment is this:
- thanks to a procedure administered today, he does not believe i have pelvic floor dysfunction/disorder (shoot, i was hoping i did since that can be fixed with physical therapy and biofeedback.) however, he said PT and biofeedback would not hurt my situation.. he just doesn’t want to order it until i get some other tests done.
- he wants me to get two tests to tell him more about how my guts function
- one test is a sitz marker test. here is a good description of what it is (found it through google.) it takes 5 days and i will have 3 xrays that will tell the doctor how my colon moves things along.
- the other test is called a defecogram. here is a good description of what it is (again, found on google.) this requires a bowel prep and then i get to hang out at the hospital for 4 hours while they xray me trying to poop. doesn’t that sound fun?
- after i get those two tests, we will see what’s next.
so, that’s the short and sweet update for now. in the meantime, he told me to keep plugging along (and dealing with my plugged up guts.) hope i get some answers. fingers crossed.
flashback friday!
last night marshall and i headed to see say anything in concert. we got to the venue during the second-to-last opening band (luckily, because the only band we wanted to see was the headliner.) after standing around for a few minutes, marshall commented that we were probably the oldest people there. i took a look around. he was right.. the crowd was jam packed with some people in their early twenties and a whole lot of teenagers. it actually made for great people watching.
i saw so many teenagers dressed in a certain fashion, with their hair done a certain style, and acting in a certain way. watching them made me smile real big. i actually got very nostalgic as i saw this and thought back to my own teenage concert-going days.
i was die hard about going to live shows. this all started before the raves, before the drugs, before the drinking (but continued into those days).. i just wanted to go to punk rock shows. and crowd surf. and flail my arms wildly in the mosh pit. and, of course, look a certain way. act a certain way. be a certain person. i didn’t think i was trying to be a certain way at the time, i mean.. i was me, myself, and i! but looking back.. yes, i was a typical teenager wanting to look cool to certain eyes. weren’t we all?
i was not a typical trendy teenager of the late 90s/early 2000s—and by that i mean i didn’t listen to boy bands (HATED them), never preferred going to high school sporting events, and dressed more like a boy than a girl.
boy shorts.. skate shoes.. spike belt. this photo cracks me up. i still was trendy in my own way. i was obsessed with certain brands and bands. and, like every other teenager in the world, i thought i was pretty dang awesome.
i worked at a skateboard/snowboard shop, which definitely made me think i was even cooler than i already thought i was. we had a skate park in the basement and i got to talk to cute skateboarders all day long. i was a big flirt.
my older brother (doug) was a big snowboarder, which probably paved the way for me to think certain things (and brands) were OMGthecoolest. here i am with dougy B, who i looked up to for knowing about anything and everything cool.
i also thought my nokia brick cell phone was pretty freakin’ sweet. oh yes, the nokia phone. back in the day when the only cell phone game was snake—not words with friends or draw something. and a camera on your phone was UNHEARD of. that wasn’t even a thought in my mind.
for today’s flashback friday, i thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane and list some things that were my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE when i was a teenager. hope some of you can relate!

i came down with a nasty case of mono my sophomore year, and i watched this movie every single day for a month straight. not exaggerating. i still whip out random quotes from the flick on a regular basis (“who knows where thoughts come from? they just appear. mmhmm.”) and i could sing a rex manning tune at the drop of a hat. it’s definitely in my top five movies of all time.
i wonder if my obsession with empire records is what played a part in me thinking that working at a skateboard shop was so ultimately cool? probably.

i went to lots of concerts. i was obsessed with music. this was before blogs, obviously.. because now i really am not as into music as i should be! i bought a band t-shirt at EVERY show. and, sadly, my huge t-shirt collection was thrown away by someone on accident.

here i am, stoked for the volcom logo in california, wearing volcom head to toe.
saying i was obsessed with volcom is a huge understatement. i actually HAD to be wearing at LEAST one item of volcom at all times.
example: wearing a volcom shirt that i STILL have today.. on my cool nokia phone that i do not still have today.
for my sister’s wedding, i had to have a volcom skirt. for my brother’s wedding, i had to have a volcom dress. each christmas, my sister would make me a special volcom something.. including a quilt, a flower pot, a mirror, a clock, and other volcom things i can’t think of right now.
even my halloween pumpkins were volcom-ized.
and there i am, pulling my brother’s signature smile that i thought was so cool. always trying to be like him!
favorite shoes
skate shoes. i did not ever wear girl shoes. it was flip flops (volcom ones, of course!) or skate shoes. i loved the brands globe, circa, and osiris the very most.
pretty sure i am still hoarding a few pairs in my garage because i simply cannot part with them. shoot, even the box that was holds the flashback photos scanned into this post is in an old circa shoebox…
…yes, i wore a size 4 in dudes shoes. i may have worn the shoes, but i could definitely NOT skateboard. that ish is hard! also, sidenote, skate shoes were so super bulky back then. how did i think they were so cool and how did people actually skateboard in them?

hahaha, I think you were cooler than me as a teenager. I was an anime geek… well, when I was a young teen I was like grungy and only wore boy’s clothes, then I was very briefly a goth, and then around 15/16 I started wearing a lot of tight bright tops (like hello kitty stuff) and big baggy pants… I also had crazy hair, all sorts of different colors. I was never huge into any particular brand, but I definitely liked anime and a mix of raver/punk style. I think I wanted to be a raver really bad, but was too much of a goody goody to actually be one.
I need to dig up some old photos or something. It was awful. Like really bad. I remember thinking Hot Topic was the coolest store ever. EVAR.

I want to do a similar flashback! I loved Roxy as a teen. Andy’s favorite band was and still is Thursday. I loved MxPx, NOFX, Blink182 (they played at my prom!) And I thought dickies were so cool. I had a bright orange pair. What a nerd.

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh this is hilarious. We had very similar looks in high school. I thought I was a skater girl through and through haha. So girly now… weird. EMPIRE RECORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i loved that show so much. Watched every weekend probably and I had the CD soundtrack permanently in my 5 disc boom box.
I was obsessed with globe shoes as well LOL oh these photos are hilarious. In idaho it was white eyeliner, then bright blue on top. Then black eyeliner around the lips with foundation on the lips, then clear gloss. I must find photos. So Bad.
I loooved bagel bites, the little pizza bagels, I could seriously eat an entire tray.

I graduated high school in ’98, and Empire Records was one of those movies that I watched a million times (and can quote, pretty much the whole thing). “What’s with today today?” I was extra cool because I also worked at a record store in the mall. I also watched Singles and Reality Bites, Mallrats incessantly.
I was NOT a girly girl at all, and dressed in boy clothes, totally. But I wore a lot of JNCO jeans and big adidas shirts and hoodies. And VANS- I lived in my black Vans.
I also went to concerts all the time- like every weekend. We would even squeeze in the back of my friend’s CRX because she was the only one that was brave enough to drive into DC. We were obsessed with ska and bands like Reel Big Fish and Mighty Mighty Bosstones- and also many that you mentioned above. Oh- and I met MXPX at the Warped tour in 97 (amongst many other rock stars).
LOVE how you had photos in your visor of your car- pretty sure I did too!

Thank goodness we aren’t teenagers forever… it’s good to be able to look back and laugh. I have a pic of me and my best friends (circa 8th grade… 1980) dressed to go to our first concert. Ummmm, I have on leg-warmers and sandals…whaaaaaaaaa?

Ha, this post brought back a lot of memories for me, too! Those were my favorite bands in late high school/early college. I had skate shoes, (couldn’t skateboard either), went to shows all the time (& Warped Tour), and definitely had the spiked belt and tons of bracelets as well. Wore a lot of little boys thrift store t-shirts, too. Haha! The good old days…
This post brought back some fantastic memories. First of all Honey Bunches of Oats and Dr. Pepper were staples in my house. My step dad used to have one of those Nokia brick phones and I loved how the sides lit up. lol. When I was a teenager, I was a little snot. I would only wear clothes from Buckle or brands like Lucky, Silver, Billabong, etc. I had a green Grand Prix and my boyfriend gave me some of his old subwoofers to put in it. We always listened to rap like 50 Cent and Ying Yang Twins. I sure thought I was hood. :P

I love memory lane trips! I had the same cell phone as you, and the same etnies shoes. Most of the same favorite bands too. My ex’s band opened for Thrice and it was pretty much the best day of my life. Ah, Man I thought I was cool.
I think what makes me laugh about me when I was a teenager is how I would just get obsessed about anything. Not only would I like a certain band/brand/hobby/whatever, I would live and breathe it. Until something else came along.
I love The Ataris, I listened to them in high school and listen to them to this day! I actually never really went to concerts in high school…and now my bf is in a band and I have been to about 24566 concerts and get to look at all the high schoolers now. It is pretty funny.

I just admitted to a girl I work with that I was the girlfriend riding around town in the pimped out, lowered, tinted Civic with a bumping system in high school…she didn’t believe me, but its true!
I was the girl that dressed like a guy or occasionally a complete skank {halloween, prom…} and pretended I was cool beans because I wore skate brands {Volcom is “my brand” in our house…}, hung out with skaters and was one of the very few girls who could actually hold her own on a snowboard! Also…still have – and wear! – the Globe skate shoes I had in high school!
I grew up listening to country music and wasn’t much for the Top 40 but did give into rap because that is what “really hit” on the systems in all the guys cars {totally not a slut, just dated one guy – currently The Husband – but spent 90% of my time with guy friends}. I basically lived off Hot Pockets, PopTarts and Cheerios – all of which have permanent homes in my locker!
Haha! I remember my first cell phone was a lot like that–the standard Nokia…but I thought mine was so cool because the screen had color! That was a huge deal back in 2002.
Food wise, I was really into terrible cereal. I had a phase of loving Honey Smacks and French Toast Crunch…sometimes together.
Oh man, this post brought back some fun memories of my high school days. I loved surf brands and wanted to be a surfer. I worked at Pac Sun and wore Billabong and Roxy (and Volcom). I had the purses, the wallets, the hats, the stickers on my car, etc. I took surf lessons but was never very good. I was into rap more than punk music and have a ton of mix CDs with rap music. To this day I still like to listen to rap music when I workout. Junior year I started getting more into the hippie vibe- clothes, music and other things I prefer not to talk about online. ;)
I remember snake! I haven’t thought of that in a long time!
When I was a teenager, I was really into sort of pseudo-hippie stuff – phish, bands like that. And other things that went along with it if ya know what I mean.
This post makes me happy. I went to an MXPX/Good Charlotte/New found glory concert when I was 15. we only wanted to see MXPX but then they asked me and my friend to go on stage with new found glory. So crazy.
New Found Glory was my first show ever. Midtown and Dashboard Confessional opened for them at St. Andrew’s Church in College Park MD. No one knew who Dashboard was and they were throwing stuff at this guy playing the guitar and whining. Three months later, after his album had come out, there were crowds of dudebros singing along with “Screaming Infidelities”. It was hilarious.
Dude. Totally forgot about Midtown! I remember I went to their show the day before I moved to London and I went to the show instead of packing for my study abroad, then I was up all night packing. Ha.

My high school teenage years took place in the early 90’s. For graduation, my friend received a “car phone” that was the size of a shoe box. Actually the whole thing came in a huge case and you had to plug a cord into the car lighter, we thought we were so cool that we could talk while driving. But when the monthly bill came, it was outrageous $$$, her parents were not happy!
I was also in high school in the early 90’s. I had one friend who had a car phone and it was exactly as you describe. She had to actually plug it into her car. We thought we were so cool when we were driving around in her car requesting songs to be played on the local radio station. It’s so funny how things have changed since then!
I was totally a “skater girl” back in the day, too. I still love going to shows (I’ve gone to Warped Tour every year for the past decade, no shame), but thankfully I’ve grown out of the Volcom/Billabong stage!
I still crave those little Totino’s pizzas, they were the only things my friends and I could afford!
Empire Records is an amazing movie. Damn the man! I need to watch that again.

I thought I was hot shit in my checkered slip on Vans or all black Chucks with my camo shorts, band tshirts and silver studded belt. I probably looked more butch than anything else, haha. I loved ska, screamo and saved money from my unofficial high school forgery business (forging parental signatures on low scoring papers, report cards, etc) to buy overpriced dimebags and a Vans warped tour ticket.
My favorites: Hot Topic, HMV (the record store; I worked there and flirted with scrawny hipsters all day), Monster energy drinks, neon green eyeliner and pink eyeshadow.

Still have a couple pairs of bulky skate shoes kicking around (I loved Etnies and Circa), I even pretended I was a skater chick for awhile, but you’re right, it’s really hard, so I just dated skater guys instead. Ahhh, Empire Records and MXPX were such favorites of mine. As far as me as a teenager, I went to a ton of live shows and moshed and partied with the bands, though they were all really crappy small town hardcore bands.
Those were the days. ahaha
I was a pretty shy and awkward teenager. I wasn’t much of a girly girl either to be honest. I spent my days getting dusty working at a barn with horses. Riding horses and showjumping was my life….and I thought that was pretty cool. And skater brands were all the rage as well. I remember living in my dickies pants…they were so comfy!

This is really cool! As a teenager now, it’s cool to see how others were when they were younger. I was only like 4 when this happened, but I still remember some of the bands (Thursday and Thrice made rounds around my iTunes a few times) and god the Volcom thing was STILL huge until a few years ago.
The trend today I think is to be a “hipster.” It’s kind of ridiculous, and it drives me crazy.
YES! I LOVE SAY ANYTHING. I discovered them in 2003. And Thursday is, to this day, one of my favorite bands. One of the best shows I ever went to was when they played in a friend’s basement when the club owner didn’t show up to unlock the doors, so we just moved the show. It was the middle of summer, 2001 or 2002 I think, and it was SO HOT and we were all crammed in this crappy basement, and they just rocked out like crazy. It was amazing.
Teenager me was a weirdo. I was a strange mix of wannabe punk rocker, listening to NOFX and Goldfinger, with short spikey hair and black and white Doc Martens with my Catholic school uniform, but I was also Little Miss Extracurricular Activity. I dressed like a boy (baggy cargo shorts and skate shoes) and just didn’t fit in anywhere. Much like my adult self!

I was totally that girl in high school/college and loved listening to bands that no one heard of. I lived for tiny shows, it was so much more intimate and yes I met a lot of band members!
Thrice to this day is actually still one of my favorite bands and we actually know the guys in the Ataris! Well the Ataris as they are now. Matt went to high school with a few of them so we go see them all the time and one guy lives in Phoenix now.
I agree at the time I though I was totally being an individual but I think regardless we all tried to portray a certain image.

i’ve had that defecogram test =/ of course since I’m in med school I had it done by a Resident doc who later I had to work with on my radiology rotation. Awkward…
i know you don’t want to do this, but I can’t encourage you enough to try a whole foods, plant-based vegan diet (not a packaged crap vegan diet) with miralax twice a day. Just try it for a week or two and see if it makes any difference at all. i’m sure you know you’re headed down the get-my-colon-removed road and I would just encourage you to at least try this before having surgery. Giving up animals >>>> getting your colon removed. It’s worth a try, I promise. goodluck!!
i feel like i am looking into the mirror on this post! i had navy/light blue etnies and jnco jeans. lots of stupid baby doll tees and huge board shorts and the stud belts/bracelets. i went to a venue called ‘club laga’ it closed shortly after i started college but i saw dashboard confessional before he was famous and many many others. i got knocked out 2x, once at nfg and another time at thrice. i never saw thursday live but was a fan :) i was quite into senses fail, hot water music, against me, saosin etc. and could mosh with the best of them!
!!! i did the white eye crayon thing too haha. so funny i totally forgot about that! i also loved lipgloss. constantly applying it. just a little shimmer always. i used to spray color my hair wild colors sometimes like orange/blue half and half of course. pac sun was my preferred shopping venue, i think i had studded bracelets in white, red & black haha. oh my i should find some pictures!
I’ve so been where you are with the hoping one of the many tests for your stomach comes back with some reason for the discomfort. I’ve also had those tests you are having. They suck but aren’t the worst thing you’ll ever do. More like a “I can’t believe I’m doing this” kind of thing. Years later and I’m still having pain and the diagnoses is still IBS – which to me means, I have no clue! Good luck!
Um. I’m pretty sure we were the same person. I went to punk shows EVERY weekend (unfortunately the reason I ever started smoking, so dumb.) and saw MxPx like 5 times, met the band and thought I could die happy. I even wrote the words to “Can I Call You Sweetheart” on my closet door when I was 17 and mom almost killed me. Have an ENTIRE BOX of guitar picks in my closet to this day, sang “Mable” on stage with Goldfinger, rocked every color of Etnies and Vans and worked in at PacSun pretty much just so I could flirt with the cute boys that came in to buy Volcom, Billabong and body jewelry.
Did we just become best friends?
Yes. Yes we did. But I figured we already were!

i still own an mxpx cd somewhere…remember the band good charlotte? i saw them at a small venue when they were an opening act for fenixtx and someone else and THEY SIGNED MY STOMACH! i was in starstruck and in love :) i still have the picture somewhere.
at my school, it was cool to wear things like CK, roxy, nike, adidas, no dinx (volleyball thang), mossimo, etc. i had the no dinx stuff since i played vball and mizunos (vball shoes! which were way better than the nikes!). so yeah, i never followed trends, still don’t.
i could kill a box of honey bunches of oats still…totinos pizzas – haven’t changed. they’re still amazing :) and my 1st cell phone was when i was 18 and it was also the nokia brick! i got a pink cover for it though. i must’ve not liked wendy’s then because i didn’t know they served breadsticks. sounds amazing :)

I fought being a girl. I hated when my mom said I had to wear a bra so I wore sweatshirts in the summer. That all changed when I had to go to catholic school. Junior high I rocked the awesome lipliner faze, actually I rocked that too long. I always wore short jeans shorts, that I would kill to be able to get into today. Oversized t-shirt, tall socks, but I am not sure on the shoes. I still have a pair of etnies that I randomly pull out for running around or doing things outside. I will never ever get rid of my docs.
I always hung around guys and still prefer to. I just never fit it and since I’m not married and don’t have kids..I am still taking the other path than everyone else. By the way, Unwritten Law, Zebrahead and others are playing here this afternoon/tonight..want to go with me?!! ;)

Oh man I was a horrible teen, I was always going out, sneaking out, drinking, doing horrible things I shouldn’t have been doing. What can you do, at least I’m out of that phase now and have learned from those experiences!
What a fun trip down memory lane! I also loved Empire Records and watchednit repeatedly with my friend Jayne.
I went through a brief “gangster” stage, wore a lot of Billabong, Stussy, and Lucky and listened to Bone Thugs N’ Harmony. After that, I was more “preppy,” wore Gap and The Limited, and became a cheerleader/dance team but still loved listening to rap and hip hop.
Oh man! It’s fun looking back on teenage years, even though I’d never want to go back.
I was pretty girly girl for sure though I was never big into skirts/dresses (although I had this one awesome red-orangy mini skirt that I was OBSESSED with). I was all over the pink and glitter and playing with make up and (trying) to do my hair even though I had no idea what I was doing. Lots of embarrassing pictures for sure. For some reason my best friend and I were all about matching each other (like the same shirt in a different color). We laugh about that now. Although I think I had a pair or two of skater shoes and loved those skateboarding boys. ;)
We were basically the same teenager. Those are the only bands I listen to still to this day. I listen to random music on the radio, but nothing compares to my tried and true NOFX, Say Anything, Thrice, Bane…I think this was my most favorite post of yours so far :)
