hello and welcome to wednesday night!
i had quite the busy day today.
after dropping penny & randy off at daycare, i dropped my car off at the body shop to get some dents fixed (note to self: don’t back into poles or run into retaining walls ever again.) i will have it back on saturday. mid-day i ran (okay, drove.. marshall let me borrow his car) to three different credit unions to seal the deal on our automobile loan refinances.. we are saving $300 a month, all of which we will still pay toward principal so we can get those loans paid off quick. now is a great time to refinance, folks!
back at work, i reconciled my life away in quickbooks and had to stay late because i procrastinated tying out february’s month end balances.. by a mere 21 days is all. woops! i picked up the worn-out kiddos from daycare and dropped them off at the casa. i inhaled some popchips, cottage cheese, and a chunk of dave’s killer sprouted baguette with cherry jam, then headed straight to the gym for a leg workout followed by some moderate cardio.
the details:
i finished with 20 minutes on the elliptical at level 15 and a 6 MPH pace.
i came home and immediately got to work on dinner because it was already past 8 o’clock! i made my brown sugar lemon chicken. the first time i made it i mentioned that it was a time consuming recipe, but since it was late i decided to take a short cut and finished the cooking process in the frying pan (instead of the oven.) this was a great idea! the whole process took less than 20 minutes. super speedy! worked like a charm. marshall had roasted some sweet and red potatoes (in garlic, frank’s, salt, and pepper) while i was at the gym, so i steamed a batch of broccoli and dinner was served by 8:35!

i added a dollop of chobani to my potatoes as an afterthought. good choice.

whew.. and now i am finally taking a load off to blog! quite the jam-packed wednesday.
now, for some fun rambles!
tonight i want to talk about the other blogs. for the most part, the blogs i read all have to do with food and/or fitness. well, mostly food.. now that i think about it. BUT, yes, there is a but, there are some blogs i read that have nothing to do with food or fitness. and i love them. i have them in a folder called “other stuff” on my google reader. today i want to give you a peek inside my other stuff folder.

first off, whatshouldwecallme is my new favorite one, but i already blogged about that in last week’s post. in addition to this new fave, here are some others…
j’s everyday fashion.

let’s face it. i am not fashionable. not cutting edge, not trendy, not hip with it. j’s blog makes dressing cute look so easy AND affordable! i get tons of ideas from her and she’s always got great outfits that i can wear to work and includes links to where items can be purchased. here are a few i love:

(click the photo to go to each specific post)
this one is cool.. people send in an old photograph that they are holding up to the same location as in the photo.. it’s pretty rad to see how they match up and how the background has changed! the submitter also includes a little snippet to go along with the photo.
here is a good example:
makes me want to dig out some old photos and visit the neighborhood i grew up in!
this blog is compiled of little letters. here are just a few gems:

(except change it to husband.. and this is SO TRUE. want proof? look at my caption on this photo.)
it’s ALL THINGS OWL. enough said. (i blogged about this site before, here.)
and finally, for the grammar nerds, apostrophe catastrophes.
yes, it’s just what you would think.. a bunch of situations where printed items have horrible grammar. here are a few examples:

(click the photos to be taken right to the posts.)
fun fact: as i was browsing the archives to pick a few to share, i came across this catastrophe in elko, nevada, that i actually posted on my instagram back in july! weird.
whelp, that’s that! i am gonna go pass out. until next time, friends.
Q~
what is a non-food/non-fitness blog you love?

omg LOVE all of these! thank you!
lol these are great! the apostrophe catastrophe blog reminds me of this sign that’s posted everywhere around the hospital i work at that says “KNOCK BEFORE ENTERING FEMALE PATIENT”…my attending has made it his personal mission to go around and put a period b/t entering and female on every sign!
hahahah that’s great!
Love J’s everyday! She has definitely inspired me to try new things!
p.s. am I really that stupid? How do you make a folder in google reader? *blonde moment*
Just click the drop down arrow next to the blog subscription and select “New Folder” :)
i also love j’s everyday fashion blog! i just recently found it a few weeks ago actually, and i’ve enjoyed getting new and affordable outfit ideas. i’m no fashion queen, so i need all the advice i can get! ;)
I read a few fashion blogs, home/design blogs and my friend’s makeup blog! Need to branch out more though…
I LOVE J’s Everyday Fashion! I think I was initially introduced through you; I’m pretty sure you’ve mentioned her before. I have learned a lot from her and she is so nice through e-mails when you have questions! ;)
Forgot to mention other ones I love: Young House Love, Bower Power, Rockstar Diaries, The Daybook.
I’m a little obsessed with Life Hacker (prob like the rest of the world) and I also love Post Secret http://www.postsecret.com/
So old it’s practically retro, but still never fails to make me smile. (If I sent in a post card I realised today it would totally say ‘Sometimes I’m glad when my husband acts like a jerk, because then I don’t have to feel bad about being so totally neurotic and unreasonable such a high proportion of the time… :) ‘
I know it doesnt count as a blog, per se, but seriously Pinterest has re-invigorated my interest in the internet and for finding so many new and awesome things. It’s like having the internet all over again be fresh and new!
That is one mighty big jam packed wednesday! My day was just as hectic and now I am worn out. Been a slacker at the gym as well…really should get back to it. I’m about to start phase 3 of jamie eason’s livefit and the length/intensity of the workouts has me feeling a little nervous to be honest. My favourite non-food/fitness blog is http://theberry.com/ Good collection of lots of random photos and stuff. A fabulous time wasting machine haha
Okay, super fun websites. I need to get on google reader and organize it like you have yours. I also need some help with Quickbooks. Are you coming to SD anytime soon to visit your sister? Ha. Just kidding. Oh and that dinner looks delish. :)
Hope you’re getting some good shut eye.
can i get in on that quickbook action?
;-)
I love any and all grammar blogs. The picture one looks cool too!
i think bestweekever.tv is one of the funniest blogs out there. i also love gofugyourself – but they don’t browse well on google reader so i actually visit their page… woah, i must really like it if i leave google reader world.
Sounds like a longass day! But that dinner looks delicious. Chobani is awesome in so many unexpected places. The fashion blog looks cool (especially since I have 0 sense of fashion ;)). Hope today is FABULOUS
I pretty much read fitness or food as well, but I do read one fashion blog. I should probably only stick to the one ;-)
i’ve checked out j’s everyday fashion thanks to you.. i feel like i love that stuff (and stuff on pinterest) and then i never look at it again.. i could def use some better styling, too!
LOVE dear blank, please blank.. me and my sister use to send them to eachother all the time when i had no life.. i also love meals&moves! you’re awesome.. thanks for having such a great blog!
I don’t like many non food/fitness blogs because that’s where my areas of interest lie, but I can see me procrastinating for hours with the help of Dear Photograph. Such a touching and clever concept.
I do like to read the quirky thoughts at http://thenonexistentchair.blogspot.co.uk/
xxx
Seeing the weights you use makes me feel like such a sissy girl :) You are seriously animalistic, and I’m jealous.
One of my favorite non-food blogs is betcheslovethis.com because it speaks to my snarky trashy-reality-tv-obsessed heart.
Dear Photograph is a favorite of mine!! You should read Xkcd too…it’s a little nerdy, but pretty great.
Ahahaha, these are awesome. As an editor who loves owls, I added both the owl blog and the punctuation blog!
My favorite non-food/fitness blogs are:
– Two Pitties in the City (http://www.twopittiesinthecity.com) – two adorably awesome pit bulls, Miss M and Mr. B, living in Chicago and having adventures with their people, A and E.
– The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee (http://www.ittybittykittycommittee) – a lovely lady who fosters litters of kittens for her local shelter. Beautiful photography and she gives them the most adorable names.
Gah, the second link should be http://www.THEittybittykittycommittee.com. Derp.
i seriously might love you for introducing me to whatshouldwecallme – might be my favorite website of all time – hysterical!! haha
I should really organize my blog subscriptions. However, I think they’re all food-related in some way :)
Oh man…the apostrophe deal….SO BOTHERING…I am such a grammar Nazi haha. I am cringing.
Thanks for sharing love :)
I LOVE the photograph blog … that is SO creative!!
Ahh thank you for posting those!! I love looking at stuff like that :).
owl barn lol. i love you! most of the blogs i read are non HLB related and fashion/design. i like ‘honestlyWTF’ ‘fashionindie.com’ & ‘a beautiful mess’
What? There are blogs out there that don’t have to do with food or exercise??
;)
i love this blog: http://www.thepursuitofsassiness.com/ jen writes all about her adventures in mental health counseling and psychology. so interesting!
hey, she could practice on me! i need to read this. Thanks Julie.
Thanks for the shout-out! I am so glad to hear that you like Apostrophe Catastrophes. Wow, your workout sounds really hardcore! I don’t think I could ever use those heavy weights. For example, deadlift with 70 pounds?? I use 15 or 20 at most. I’m impressed.
Thank you! Also, honored you came over here and commented! Love your blog.
Those bad grammar ones make me want to scream!
i’ve noticed lately that some of my favorite blogs are not food/fitness related at all either! i’m hooked on home design blogs now…
Geez your squat weight puts mine to shame! Does it include the barbell weight or is it w/o the barbell weight? I’m on Phase 2 of the Live Fit plan :)
That definitely includes the barbell! I am not THAT strong haha. The olympic bar I used weighs 45 lbs. Also, the sled of the 45 degree leg press weighs 45 lbs and the smith machine bar weighs 15 lbs.. for those who wondered!
Thanks for giving me something to do for the rest of the day (works a bit slow). I LOVE reading new blogs. And, because I love reading your blog, I am going to have to check out all the above blogs you mentioned! Happy Thursday!
My favoites right now are: Under the Sycamore (http://ashleyannphotography.com/blog/) – it is such a sweet blog and she is in the process of adopting a little girl from China. Good stuff.
Also: http://www.inspiredbycharm.com/ Michael owns a B&B and is so creative. Listed as a top Pinterest followed person.
And: http://www.addicted2decorating.com/ – self explanatory
I cringe when some calls me a decorator and not a designer. I paid good money to be called a designer :) But most of my favorite are all design right now.
Sounds silly, but I only recently branched out to read blogs about things other than health and food! I started reading food blogs in college and got hooked :P Pinterest has been a great source of educational and style blogs!
My daughter has gotten me addicted to craftgawker.com – I am not that crafty to come up with ideas, but I can follow visual directions pretty well!
I may be stealing some of your strength training stuff for my “Operation Badass” in April – just giving you fair warning! :D
I love photography blogs – not just the ones that showcase great pictures but also the ones that teach you about photography. Being a new dSLR owner there are so many tips and tricks that I have learned from these photography blogs. My new find is…http://www.courtneykirkland.net/
this is a good one!
One of my current faves is knockoffdecor.com……great ideas for making things that you see in all the high end catalogs for cheap!
Ok the Dear Photograph site…just done. I’m blaming you for my sudden outburst of tears since you did not attach a “warning: sobbing may ensue” sign to it. ;)
LOVE the outfit/fashion one and the punctuation ones. I’m going to have to check them out!!
Ooh, thanks for sharing those, Janetha! I think I’m going to start reading the photograph and the grammar one :)
We just did the refinance thang, too!
I may have just found some new blogs! Everyone needs a good laugh. I have been following The Perfect Palette for some wedding ideas, but I also follow my brother’s basketball blog. He wrote about his last season as a D-1 athlete and now is writing about march madness and other sports. I wish he would have just majored in journalism! The kid can write :)
i need to follow the grammar one. I am horrible at it.
I follow wine blogs. LIke the boring wine guy. Yep, i am a boring wine gal myself. It’s nerdy and i like it.
still thinking of ways to thank you for introducing me to my new obsession that is #whatshouldwecallme.
Even though this is food related, its not about the food people eat like most healthy living blogs. More the food they don’t eat…Food allergy blogs. Since my daughter has a nut allergy I enjoy these blogs as well!
I will never understand how people can mess up possessive words with contractions – ala you’re/your, they’re/there/their, we’re/were…I blame the journalism degree and grammar police that were my parents. Although I don’t blame them in a bad way…sheesh. And making plural words possessive? Sounds like something my first graders might do…but not business-owners. Okay…rant over. Happy Thursday!
I like the fashion blog BleachBlack, mostly because I went to high school with one of the girls. I also like to browse personal finance blogs. Girls Just Want to Have Funds is pretty good (too much random advertising in their posts though) and ChristianPF.com is good (and I’m not even a mildly religious person!).
Ok so I just went to dear blank, for the first time ever – HILARIOUS! I am currently at my place of employment aka a county jail and laughed so hard the officers thought I was in trouble… Thank you for the laughs!
Rustic Living
itsrusticliving.blogspot.com
Check it out- Ashley is so great!
Love the workout you posted!! Going to pin it now!!
And love the blogs you shared- thank you!! (esp the apostrophe catastrophe one!) =)
crunchybetty.com and diynatural.com are two recent favourites now that I’m trying to detoxify my life. I read Cure Magazine’s blog religiously. It’s a magazine for cancer patients, survivors, and caretakers and it has basically kept me sane over this past year. Lovelovelove it.
We can’t forget Natalie Dee!!
