girls & goals & great news.

in eating out,family time,goals,moves

hey, guys! how was your tuesday?

mine started out bright and early—but not as bright and early as i’d aimed for. i wanted to get off work a little early today, so i set my alarm to make it to the 5:45 AM class at GPP. well, the alarms (yes, i set three) went off, 5:45 came and went, and i rolled out of bed at 6:09—barely making it to the 6:30 class. but the important part is that i made it!

today’s workout was challenging in the strength department—it was called cleans & abs and it was just what it sounds like. power cleans with some ab work thrown in. i paired up with a couple lovely ladies and pounded out the sets called for, maxing out at 95#. it was tough, but fun. i am amazed at the ladies who are cleaning 125+ pounds for multiple reps. candice is one of those ladies. she’s such an inspiration!

after GPP it was off to work for a fun-filled day at the office. another day, another dollar.. right? at least this week is only a three day work week and then i’m off to oregon. yes, it’s on a work trip, but it won’t be too much actual work. thanks to all of you who made great suggestions for things to do while in hood river!

after work i had big plans with the girls! specifically my mom, sister suni, and sister in law lindsay.  we had a belated mother’s day celebration! momma b treated us to pedicures and dinner. she’s so generous!

well, almost everyone got pedicures. i’d made a 4:45 appointment for the four of us, but they were overbooked and understaffed, so i ended up waiting in the chair for a solid hour! the other three were finished with their pedicures (and ready to go eat dinner!) before they even had a technician available to start my pedicure. i said forget it and we peaced out of there. i was slightly annoyed, but sometimes that’s just life.

we headed to gourmandise for dinner.  gourmandise is a bakery right downtown that not only has fantastic baked goods—but delicious soups, salads, and sandwiches, too. i have been there several times and it never lets me down.  i love everything they make—from savory to sweet. i even served their tiramisu at the rehearsal dinner before my wedding!

we started with the goat cheese crostini which was topped with caramelized pears and pecans. it was the perfect combination of savory and sweet.

IMG 4034

plus, there were four slices and there were four of us! meant to be.

IMG 4032

for my entree i selected the cobb salad which was piled high with avocado, herb-roasted chicken breast, crumbled bacon, hard boiled eggs, tomato, cucumber, and bleu cheese. it came with a french vinaigrette dressing and a whole wheat roll.

IMG 4038

after dinner i snagged marshall some dinner and tiramisu to go and raced home so the poor boy didn’t starve to death. (i kid–he can fend for himself, but gourmandise has tasty food!)

and now for my second G–goals! today i wrote a blog post over on the fitmixer bootcamp site (it’s private) because we had some homework. our leader, candice, wanted us to set some short- and long-term goals. if you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know i used to be a MAJOR goal setter. i would set a long list of goals each and every month. i am still a very goal-oriented person.. i just don’t hold myself to it as much. i also don’t write goals down all the time.

i put my thinking cap on and listed some of my goals–both small and large–and i like what i came up with. i thought i would share my lists with all of you! side note–there is proper capitalization on the lists because i promise i type like a normal person outside of my blog ;)

Short-term goals:

  • Drink 1 gallon of water daily. Match any other beverages consumed ounce-for-ounce with extra water. (So if I have 12 oz of coffee, I have to drink my gallon plus 12 oz of water.)
  • Get 7 hours of sleep each night. I am usually eeking by with 5 or 6. 8 is ideal, but I will settle with 7.
  • No mindless snacking when I walk in the door from work. I know we all have that time of day where our snacking is out of control. For some it’s before bed, for others it’s mid-afternoon. For me it’s when I walk in the door from work right around 5PM. At this time I have usually had a snack and it’s not quite dinnertime. I won’t be hungry AT ALL as I drive home from work, but right when I walk in the door I suddenly feel like I haven’t eaten in WEEKS and grab anything I can get my hands on. It’s ridiculous and unnecessary. I am going to try chewing gum to stop myself from these snack attacks. Now that I work out in the mornings, this is even worse with so much spare time between when I get home and when I eat dinner!

Long-term goals:

  • Cut out GMOs from my diet. My husband suggested this and I agree–it’s a good goal.
  • Be happy with my arms (they are my body part I am not a fan of–we all have one!)
  • Cross the monkey bars.. I have NEVER in my life done this and I have the Tough Mudder in October, scary!
  • Become a personal trainer/certify to be one.
  • Take courses to become an RD or at least certified to give some sort of nutritional advice to people. I want to be legit.

you may notice i didn’t have any goals on there about weight.  this is because I truly think the number on the scale is a joke after my body fat composition test the other day. well, i already thought it was a joke, but the results from last thursday only drove that thought home further. i weigh more now than i did 4 years ago when i was in the moderately overweight category. the difference now? i have more muscle.. so i weigh more. but i am smaller, tighter, fitter, and happier.

my third and final G is great news!

NewImage

THAT’S FREAKING RIGHT!!!! trader joe’s has officially announced they will be in salt lake city before the end of the year! i am beyond thrilled. i am that girl who takes an extra suitcase to california specifically to tote goods home from trader joe’s. and i am always longing for the perishable goods that i can’t take home with me. i absolutely, positively cannot put my excitement into words. and yes, i am this excited over a grocery store. it’s a big deal, folks.

whelp, those are my 3 Gs for the night.. well.. ACTUALLY, if you count GPP and gourmandise, that’s FIVE Gs! you guys know i love alliteration and lists, so this post was a win in my book.

Qs~

1. what are your goals–either short- or long-term? or both!
2. if you could have an endless gift card to ANY store, what store would you pick?xo. janetha g.

emily June 5, 2012 at 8:38 pm

1. My short-term goal is to become an RD. (<– I can't believe this one is so close; only 1 more year until I graduate and sit for the certification exam!) My long-term goal is to attend culinary school and open a restaurant.

2. I'm stuck between J.Crew and Whole Foods. I'm pretty sure a clothing-grocery hybrid store needs to open.

Denise G. June 5, 2012 at 9:12 pm

1. I’ve never set a goal in my entire life. I’m too afraid of failure. My messed up logic tells me if I don’t try I can’t fail. I know, not good.

2. I would like an unlimited gift card for my gym. That way I’d have unlimited personal trainer and massage therapist.

Cheri Z June 5, 2012 at 9:23 pm

Trader Joes? I am now doing digital hand stands! I am totally going to make that three mile trek and FILL MY VAN! Thanks for sharing the great news!!

Cheri Z June 5, 2012 at 9:25 pm

Make that “3 hour trek” – see how excited I am?!

Janetha June 7, 2012 at 9:42 am

Dude, I was laughing so hard at this. At first I was like 3 mile TREK? What? But this makes sense now :) xoxo

Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries June 5, 2012 at 9:26 pm

EEEEEK!!! hearing about trader joe’s just made my night! do you know where in salt lake it’s going to be?

Michelle June 6, 2012 at 10:42 pm

I think they said it will be on 400 South and about 600 East. I can’t wait! I am soooooooo excited. I was so tired of seeing all the awesome stuff people show on their blogs that they get from TJ’s, that we can’t get. But now we will be able to too. Yipee!!

Bonnie June 5, 2012 at 9:53 pm

Great thoughts shared in this post, J (although what a bummer about your pedicure! I would have been disappointed as I rarely get them). I’m not a big goal setter – I just don’t make goals but am more driven by everyday actions. That being said, I’m TRYING to quit eating late at night – I simply don’t need the extra calories and I would like to eat cleaner and be leaner. So a bit frustrated with my lack of will power here (just came in the door and had a bit of the MIL’s chocolate cheesecake; how could I not, I asked myself!…but I also had 2 cookies earlier today). ;) I’m working on it! Thanks for sharing your goals.

Carly June 5, 2012 at 9:57 pm

So jealous about TJ’s. I drive across the border once every 2 or 3 months just to hit it up! Canada needs to get TJs….stat!

One of my short term goals is also to get more sleep, but I have so much to do every day I don’t see that happening! lol.

Gift Card to anywhere? Probably HomeSense or Forever 21!

Amanda June 5, 2012 at 10:02 pm

Great goals. I especially like the water one. I struggle with getting enough water in! My nutritionist gave me a hard time about it. She said my baseline is 60-100oz a day. So I’ll be working on that one too!

Meg June 5, 2012 at 10:09 pm

love your goals and thoughts on the scale Janetha :) xo

Heather (Heather's Dish) June 5, 2012 at 10:11 pm

ugh that sucks about the pedi! but awesome that you got to hang with the girls and eat such great food. i think your goals sound awesome and i’m so stoked that you’re going to go for the PT cert! you’ll make an awesome trainer!

Erica June 5, 2012 at 10:18 pm

What a fun post! What a great dinner salad. Loving the goals- especially drink more water (always working on this) and working towards your personal trainer cert. If you get it- I’m going to have you virtually train me!

Marie June 5, 2012 at 10:20 pm

That sucks about the pedi; you would be the sweetheart who went last. I would like to eat cleaner and work on portion control. They are building two Trader Joes here in Houston and I am beyond excited!!! I have never even been to one but keep hearing about them. Have a great Wednesday!

allison miller June 5, 2012 at 10:57 pm

You are sooo right about the scale…i am working on that. One of my short term goals :) I am trying to get away from weighing myself everyday- I know that is too much, and I am trying to focus on how I am so much more fit now than I ever have been in my life. Another goal- to be able to do a pull up!

Janessa June 5, 2012 at 11:39 pm

I am so excited for Trader Joes!!!! That was the worst part of moving from Seattle to Utah. Woohoo!

Kristin @ STUFT Mama June 6, 2012 at 12:09 am

Um… I think that’s your belated birthday present. The Trader Joe’s. Ha. I’m excited for you. Scale shmale- mine broke years ago and I couldn’t be happier. Ha. Hugs and belated birthday wishes!!!!

Neil June 6, 2012 at 12:29 am

I’m going to stop reading and posting on blogs after midnight. I blame you. Love this blog.

Pumped about your goals. Thanks for sharing.

I have a ton of them I wrote down this year. Pedicure was on there. So was swimming. It’s June. I’d best get to them.

Janetha June 6, 2012 at 3:50 pm

A pedicure is your goal?! We should go together. I am a total pro at that and can show you the ropes. As long as you agree to help me with some of my goals :)

Tara @ Sweat like a Pig June 6, 2012 at 12:56 am

I love your goals, especially the ones involving getting certified! It really is a great thing to have in your back pocket, even if you don’t want to change careers or anything like that. I’m lucky enough that here in the UK my PT qualification also covers nutrition, which it doesn’t in the States.

And I can relate to your excitement about a grocery store! When we moved here three months ago one of the first things on my list was to visit Whole Foods for the first time. Now I’m lucky enough to work 5 minutes away from the biggest WF in London :D

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva June 6, 2012 at 3:29 am

My short term goal is to make it through my exam without having a nervous breakdown. kidding! No but seriously I am feeling more stressed than normal and just want these things out of the way. When my head isn’t filled with neuroscience or biochemistry I might be able to think of some other goals. Until then my brain is mush!!! Love the five G’s post ;)

Kellie June 6, 2012 at 4:09 am

Totally get the excitement over Trader Joe’s…we have one opening here in TX this month!!!!!! Right down the street from my work!!!!

Lauren June 6, 2012 at 4:46 am

I like the idea of the GMO’s…that Marshall is a smart guy. :) And NO WAY! Trader Joe’s in your world is the most exciting news! :)

katie June 6, 2012 at 4:59 am

Ok I was reading the amazing list of goals and then BOOM Trader Joe’s got me all excited and that was the highlight, lol! YAY!!!

I am so happy for you, love your goals! I think they are great ones to have! The personal trainer one especially!

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List June 6, 2012 at 5:54 am

gotta get my goals in! GAH! I’ve had FIFTEEN extra classes added onto my schedule because I’m subbing this week. I’m sore.
So my short term goal? Say NO more often!

Jillian @ Sprinkle Massacre June 6, 2012 at 5:55 am

My short term goal is to take my personal training exam THIS MONTH! AH!

I need to set that water goal for myself. When I worked a desk job it was so much easier, I’d just drink and refill all day. Now that I’m home more and work a “walk around constantly” job, I don’t drink as much!

Anna June 6, 2012 at 5:55 am

I’ve been experimenting with different ‘diets’ like vegan, paleo, gluten-free and so long term I’d love to determine a personal eating philosophy that I am truly comfortable and happy with. Short-term, I just want a cup of coffee! :)

I am moving in the end of July and am also SO excited to be moving to a town with Whole Foods AND Trader Joes! It will be life changing.

Pure2raw twins June 6, 2012 at 5:58 am

we have similar goals as you!! we are trying hard to increase our water, we just get busy working that we stop to drink water (and sometimes eat) not good. so working hard on that! you are the one person that pushes us to drink more water, so thank you!!

we want to be certified trainers and nutritionist at some level too! maybe we can do it together ;)

we have a lot of goals right now it is figuring out what to do with bakery. have a lot of big decisions to make.

Bridget B. June 6, 2012 at 5:58 am

You are going to love that Trader Joe’s. I live about an hour away from one and it is like a vacation to go visit. Haha. I too die for all the perishables…heaven!
PS. Can you share the name of the blog’s font, if you know it? I love the simple format and easy readibility! Thanks!

Trisha June 6, 2012 at 6:13 am

I FREAKED when I heard about Trader Joes! So excited! I might just live there. Seriously.

Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness June 6, 2012 at 6:29 am

Ahhh you are going to love having a Trader Joe’s so close to you! I am at mine constantly! It’s pretty much the only place I shop! I love the idea of setting short and long term goals for yourself. I think it’s so important to focus not only on the long term but also on the “right now”. Thanks for reminding us of that!

Lee June 6, 2012 at 6:30 am

I am really bad about snacking the second I walk in the door too. I’m honestly hungry (it’s like 6:30) but I eat too much and then still eat dinner.

Sara June 6, 2012 at 6:58 am

You will be a fantastic personal trainer. You’ve got it.
Short term goals: I just moved to a new city so I want to find ways to get more involved, meet more people, volunteer.
Long term goals: Get my PhD!!! Starting in about two weeks. yikes!

Brittany @ Delights and Delectables June 6, 2012 at 7:18 am

Yay for TJ’s!! We just got one last year, and I spend way too much money and time in there!! My short term goal is to finish grad school (in December!!). Long term I want to get some sort of nutrition degree as well!! We can study together. :)

Calee (@chimes) June 6, 2012 at 7:40 am

GREAT goals.

I should have mentioned personal training on mine as well. I’ve been tossing around the idea for a while and have been stuck because I also have wanted to get my MFA in graphic design. I can do both … but it just depends on what direction I want to take my career. And if I do grad school (er, when) it now becomes a decision on if I should do dietetics OR if I stick with design. I’m thinking of sticking with design because it would be good to have two different career options.

Anyway, the bootcamp/personal training place I go to (sounds a little like GPP workout-wise) has a gal who’s pregnant right now, so I’m going to ask them what their plans are for when she’s out. She does the 5:30-6:30 PM classes and those would fit in my schedule. I’m guessing I’d have to get certified first, which I’d be happy to do if they would pay me to teach. :)

Also, I can’t imagine getting up that early anymore. I usually get 7-8 hours of sleep and lately it’s been more like 4-6 because I just plain can’t sleep. Ugh. I don’t know how you do it!

Happy Wednesday!

Elizabeth @ reads recipes runs June 6, 2012 at 7:45 am

Awesome goals!! I am the same way when I get home from work. It’s so weird. I want to eat everything!

I am seriously so excited for TJs. I used to shop there almost exclusively when I lived in CA it’s been so hard to adjust! Also I might be driving to CA this summer. I’ll be sure to let you know if I do, I can grab done goodies for you :)

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning June 6, 2012 at 8:47 am

My endless gift card would be Whole Foods. Yes, I’m predictable. A VERY close second would be REI.
Did you see the recipe on the latest post on your friend Candice’s blog?? Turkey Blueberry burgers??!! Whoa! I need to make them! And she’s a BP instructor- I love her already!
Your dinner looks so good- especially the goat cheese crostini. I’m a big fan of anything goat cheese, period- especially when it’s combined with fruit.

ali moll June 6, 2012 at 8:57 am

Janetha, you have been rocking the GPP workouts! Especially on Monday! My time was almost (not quite) double your time! Yikes! You are awesome!

Love Gourmandise too! I used to work right next door, until January when I switched companies. It was sooooo hard not to go over there everyday! :)

Love your goals and think you would be an amazing trainer! Go for it!

And seriously, Trader Joes is the BEST news ever! My son sent me a text yesterday when he heard. You should have seen all the stuff I brought home from Cali with me a few weeks ago. Trader Joe heaven in the back of my car!

Have a FAB day Janetha!

sarah @ sarah learns June 6, 2012 at 9:00 am

so exciting that you guys are finally getting a tj’s!

right now my short term goal is to finish up my dissertation (totally hanging over my head). long term goal is to start collaborating with my husband’s chiropractic office to offer nutritional counseling services.

omg. endless gift card. i can’t decide between target and costco!!! i’m leaning towards target. :)

Jil W June 6, 2012 at 9:39 am

We’re headed to Ohio in a few weeks and I’m so excited to shop at TJ’s. And we’re driving so I will be able to bring a cooler!!

elaine c. June 6, 2012 at 10:16 am

out of curiosity (and feel free to NOT answer if it’s too personal!): are you peeing every five minutes when you drink a gallon of water a day? i only ask because if i drink even a liter of water (over time, not guzzling) i’m running to the bathroom WAY to frequently and during my work shifts, it’s just not feasible (poor excuse, i know) to be running to pee all the time!

good luck with the monkey bars goal! i can still cross ’em and i feel accomplished each and every time, so i know you will too.

Janetha June 6, 2012 at 11:57 am

I have a pretty big bladder–if I don’t drink a lot of water, I go once or twice a day. So drinking a lot of water doesn’t do anything super crazy to me!

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats June 6, 2012 at 10:28 am

Awesome goals girly! :) I need to hop on board with that water drinking goal! I am terrible about that.

Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews June 6, 2012 at 10:42 am

Ahhh! I just got really excited when I saw that you might want to become a dietitian!! Let me know if you ever have any questions about it. It is definitely not the easiest schooling and such but very worth it.

Michelle (Better with Berries) June 6, 2012 at 10:49 am

1. I love your short-term goal of no after-work snacking. That’s definitely my biggest snacking time of the day. I’m usually legitimately hungry at first, but I eat way past that point. My long-term goal is to become an RD! I quit my job as a teacher and I’m going back to school full-time come August. Super scary but so exciting.
2. I’d have to pick Hyvee. I thought about choosing a clothing store, but I spend way more money on food :-)

Emilie @ Emilie's Enjoyables June 6, 2012 at 11:18 am

so excited for you to finally have TJs!!!

Kim @ The Family Practice June 6, 2012 at 11:20 am

great goals! Arms are tricky – I put together some arms workouts (along with a 3 week challenge) and the gals all liked their results you should check it out. I don’t like my collar bone area – its a tricky spot to work on too, I’m trying!
I’ve thought about getting trained/certified as a personal trainer – I don’t actually want to train anyone but it would be fun to learn all of that stuff and apply it to my own workouts.
I am sooooo FREAKIN stoked about TJ’s in Utah! I saw that last night and literally spit out my hot cocoa (did I mention we had snow up in Eden last night, yeah, SNOW! one day its a hundred degrees the next it is snowing)

Jessica June 6, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Gahh so jealous. I want a TJ’s ::pouty face::

Nicole C June 6, 2012 at 12:04 pm

I don’t set goals, they seem too hard to reach, so I call eveything a bucketlist. It seems more fun. Short term goal: travel to 2 new states and dress more professional for work. Long Term: live a gypsy life travelling the world. Oh and eat a vegetable.

Unlimited gift card, I can only think of MAC makeup. It’s not like me to wear a lot but that shit is expensive and I don’t want to pay for it. Or maybe Zappos.

Anna @ The Guiltless Life June 6, 2012 at 12:09 pm

Those are fab goals – especially about the snacking. I’m guilty of the before-bed snacking (mainly because for some reason I can’t seem to watch TV without something to snack on, yet that’s when I have my TV-watching veg-out time). I’ve come to realize it’s because I’m bad at just sitting still and staring at a screen, so I have started doing my nails while watching TV or something else that keeps my hands busy. Chewing gum is a great one, I have to try that!

As for unlimited gift card – so many options!!! But I would probably choose Anthropologie. Geesh I would go nuts!

Roz@weightingfor50 June 6, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Great goals Janetha! And BIG yipee on TJ’s. And the endless gift card? Does a travel agent count as a store? If so, I’d book a couple of flights asap!! Have a great Wednesday!!

the delicate place June 6, 2012 at 12:36 pm

i am impressed that you can do a hardcore workout that early! the earliest i ever did was a 630am kickboxing class and that happened all of like 2 times before i had to say no haha. i have always wanted to go to oregon i heard it’s very beautiful!

drinking tea helps me stop mindless snacking and you aren’t ingesting loads of sugar alcohols from the gum which could upset the guts. i am so happy you are getting a TJs! honestly, it makes me excited to grocery shop there haha. short term goal: survive this year at work…it’s getting so hard because we are insanely busy and need more staff. oh the growing pains of a start up! longer term: i’d like to see myself gain more confidence and be a better wife and friend to others!

giftcard to any store? colette!

julie June 6, 2012 at 1:06 pm

i think you should do a live broadcasting from the opening of TJs when it happens. or camp out? Wouldnt that be awesome!

Kat June 6, 2012 at 1:30 pm

For short term goals I have some jeans that 1-2 sizes too small that I’d love to fit into and I need to increase my typing speed (maybe 60wpm). As far as long term goals go, I’d love to finish my degree on time (May 2014) with a good GPA (3.75+), at least one internship, then get a job quick and move out by 2015!
Endless gift card? Umm…err…maybe Sephora or Running Room or Sportchek. Exercise gear is pricey!
And I am so jealous that you’ll have a Trader Joe’s! They don’t exist in Canada :/
