the rehearsal dinner.

in meals

hey guys! thanks to everyone for the warm welcome back. definitely was great to hear from everyone and read what you’ve been up to. wow, sounds like a lot is happening in so many of your lives~ super exciting!!

before i dive into the details of this post, i want to mention something horrible. terrible.

no good.

VERY bad.

the last day in mexico, i dropped my DSLR camera because i am a moron. so it is broken, not functional, getting it fixed. anyway, that sucked.

THEN..on monday morning, i went to grab my point and shoot camera to take with me so i could take photos throughout the day. except it was nowhere to be found. i was racking my brain, trying to remember the last place i had it. i know we had it the morning we left mexico. we had breakfast at a local restaurant on the beach.. then back to to hotel and then to the airport. masrshall is sure we were looking at some photos of the trip while on the plane. my only guess is that the camera fell out of my carry on bag while on the plane.

it’s gone.

i’ve called multiple lost and found locations.. it’s gone. i am one sad newlywed. at least we do have some photos from the trip—the ones taken on the DSLR camera—but most photos were taken with the point and shoot because it was easier to take that along with us. the feeling i have inside whenever i think about those lost photos is horrible. it is just sickening. sigh. i had to get that off my chest. i’ve been crying lots about it and i just thought i would mention it, maybe a few prayers will miraculously recover the camera? probably not, but hey.. you never know.

onto the details of the rehearsal dinner! a few bits of advice:

  • even if you think it will be fun to plan a rehearsal dinner menu and make it yourself, don’t.
  • even if you think it will save you money by doing your own rehearsal dinner rather than going to a restaurant, don’t.
  • even if you think it is a better idea to do the rehearsal dinner yourself so you can accommodate the vegan friends, don’t.
  • even if you realized you’re in over your head and think it will be a breeze to buy a bunch of pre-made items, there will still be a lot to do, so just don’t even try.

what i am saying here, folks, is the DIY rehearsal dinner BBQ was definitely FUN and delicious.. but it was also A LOT OF WORK. all day friday was spent preparing things for the rehearsal dinner! when we could have just had it catered or gone to a restaurant and used that whole day to do something else for the wedding (because, believe me, there was plenty to do!). so, in hindsight, i would have done it differently. but none of that matters now.. and it actually was fun getting everything ready with my mom, sisters and kristen. and the outcome was a hit! which is all that matters :)

here are some photos of us prepping:

098 099 089 097

on the menu, i will specify the work put into each item in case you wondered:

  • grilled chicken breasts (i hand trimmed and seasoned these)
  • burgers (bought from costco)
  • chik’n patties (vegan, store bought)
  • garden burgers (vegan, store bought)
  • lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, red onion, organic ketchup, mayo, veganaise, mustard (all store bought)
  • white & whole wheat buns (both vegan & not, store bought)
  • greek pasta salad with chicken (bought from costco)
  • chipotle lime pasta salad (made from scratch, vegan)
  • momma b’s famous potato salad (made from scratch, totally calorie free…)
  • assorted vegetables (bought from costco but we sliced & diced them)
  • ranch dip (made from scratch)
  • dill dip (vegan, store bought)
  • tortilla chips & salsa (vegan, bought from costco)
  • sabra hummus & stacy’s pita chips (vegan, bought from costco)
  • BBQ kettle chips (bought from costco)
  • LOTS of fruit!! (store bought and then, we did not grow our own fruit ;) )
  • tiramisu (store bought from gourmandise bakery in SLC)
  • vegan tiramisu (store bought from cali’s market in SLC)
  • strawberry shortcake (made from scratch by momma b.)

the dinner was set up outside in my parents’ backyard, it was a tad windy but the temperature was perfect!

the tablecloths and dishes were in tune with the wedding colors, of course.

trying to keep the tablecloths from flying off the table from the wind~ wedding 109

once everyone arrived, those in the wedding ceremony stepped inside to rehearse. oh man, i was tearing up at the rehearsal.. i knew i was doomed when the actual ceremony arrived! 128 125

it was fun and chaotic, we paired everyone up and even the flower girls practiced their part.

my brother in law, eric, was the man of the grill!

we were excited to finally eat~ after smelling the deliciousness coming from the grill!

i said my goodbye to marshall.. the last night as boyfriend & girlfriend!!

after everyone left, we cleaned up (special thanks to kristen and rory, the cleaning machines!!) and goofed off. momma b and her 4 girls!

can you tell which one is not related by blood? haha. 181 184

all in all, the rehearsal dinner was a fun time and a huge success. it was nice to be in a casual environment and just visit with everyone, which is what we were going for. but it was a lot of work, so i sort of wish we’d had the event catered. just a word of wisdom for all you brides-to-be!!

up next.. the wedding day! hopefully i will get around to that post sooner rather than later.

unfortunately, there have been no photos of recent meals & moves.. since one camera is lost and the other is broken :( luckily i do have quite a few wedding/honeymoon recap posts to do before getting back to regular blogging.. and hopefully my camera is fixed before that time comes! fingers crossed. oh, and say a prayer for my missing camera. please and thanks.

for the record, i still haven’t worked out. i think it’s been almost a whole month since i worked out. that is pretty crazy! i do miss the euphoric high that i get from a workout, but i have been so busy with everything and going to the gym is just not an option right now. for the record, i have been eating white bread, full fat cheeses, mayo, french fries, ice cream popsicles (creamies, to be exact), fingers full of peanut butter and 80% of my diet has been completely made up of carbs. i don’t have a kitchen right now and i just have been eating whatever is around. oh, and also for the record, i haven’t gained a bunch of weight from eating whatever and not working out. yes, i miss eating home cooked meals (because i like to cook and i like to eat what i prepare) and i miss working out (because it is fun).. but i promise, you guys, it is not the end of the world if you miss workouts and eat whatever is around. don’t feel bad and don’t apologize. and also, go read melissa’s thoughts on the matter. she wins at life.

plus, on the upside, when i don’t work out.. i only have to wash my hair like every 3 days ;)

okay, enough out of me, i sure didn’t lose my knack for rambling.. did i?!

ha. until next time :)

Qs~ 1. married folks: did you have a rehearsal dinner? what did you do for it? engaged folks: what is your plan for the rehearsal dinner? folks that this question does not apply to: what’s your favorite side salad? (hey, i gotta include everyone!)

2. what is the most valuable thing you have lost? my answer is definitely the memory card that was in the camera i lost. i couldn’t care less about the camera itself, but the photos on that card are irreplaceable. and i am so, so sad about it.

Love that close-up photo of you too and the one where you and m. are holding each other’s names :-)

I am sooooo sorry you lost your camera and will be thinking positive thoughts that somehow it finds its way back to you …

Beth @ 990 Square July 28, 2010 at 7:49 am

We had our rehersal dinner at a restaurant…so much easier!

glad you’re back!

lowandbhold July 28, 2010 at 7:50 am

I’m so sorry girl! That is a huge bummer and I totally understand why you’re so upsete :(

On the other hand, your rehearsal dinner looks like SO much fun! It’s too bad it was so much work, but it looks like you really pulled it off!

Carbzilla July 28, 2010 at 7:51 am

I’m also putting out good vibes that your camera finds its way back. I would think if someone saw what looked like honeymoon photos they would try harder. I felt the EXACT same way when I lost my hard drive. I was in mourning.

Our rehearsal dinner was at a restaurant on the Hudson, but that was the day after a BBQ at family’s and two days before a breakfast at our house (we really stretched it out) so there was still plenty to do. I hear ya that sometimes it’s just easy to turn it over to someone else.

(Are you going to be an aunt again???)

Nicole C July 28, 2010 at 8:09 am

Aw welcome back! If it makes you feel better, my point and shoot broke!! I tried to mail it to my man in Pittsburgh and the mail people must have smashed it because the screen not longer works. I got it for my 25th birthday so I could see New York and welp, it’s all a memory now. I did once leave it in a rental car and had gone home when I realized it was still in the car. The problem with this, our new rental car facility in Vegas is MASSIVE so to try and find it would have been almost impossible. A minor heart attack occurred BUT, I did find it, someone turned it in! I will cross my fingers for you and your camera!

Sweet Cheeks July 28, 2010 at 8:24 am

I am SO sorry about your cameras!! I would be livid!

I’m loving the recaps so far and can’t wait to see more…you look absolutely gorgeous and I’m so happy to read your posts again. you were missed. :)

P.S. I can really relate to the whole not working out thing. It’s been about 3 weeks since I have worked out….due to me having mono. Which means absolutely NO ENERGY. it definitely is hard because I too miss the way exercise makes me feel. But sure enough, I know I will be able to exercise again in my life. We’ll be alright!

Morgan July 28, 2010 at 8:30 am

Glad you’re back married lady! Congrats!
My rehearsal dinner was at an Italian restaurant. We did appetizers and desserts and brought in a ton of 2 Buck Chuck from Trader Joe’s and just had wine. It was relaxed and a total blast. Before the dinner we met friends for cocktails at a bar down the street and let the adults and relatives mingle a bit. I would do it again the exact same way, except I would actually eat!

Courtney July 28, 2010 at 8:39 am

The food from the reception looks awesome. It was extremely thoughtful of you to think of your vegan friends…I always so appreciate it when people do that for me. You’re right…the tiramisu looks amazing. Totally saying a prayer about the camera.

Amanda-The Nutritionist Reviews July 28, 2010 at 8:40 am

Looks like you had a ton of delicious food and a great time!

Also, I have 8 giveaways going on on my blog right now if anyone is interested!

Elliott July 28, 2010 at 8:48 am

Ugh…that sucks SO HARD that your camera is gone. Ditto to everyone above that said it sucks but at least you have some photos – yay!

The worst thing I’ve ever lost is my mother’s pearl earrings and necklace when I was a senior in college. Did I take them on a trip and forget them? Did they walk off during one of our crazy house parties? No. Clue.

Our rehearsal dinner was epic, if I do say so. We invited everyone who came in from out of town so we had 60 RD people of the 80 who came to the wedding. We had it at a restaurant, went through (no joke) 50 or 60 bottles of wine, and had the best men give a hilarious powerpoint/slideshow. Brilliant night.

maggie July 28, 2010 at 8:50 am

Oh my gosh, im saying a prayer that you get your camera!

We did our rehearsal at a nearby italian restaurant. We were so busy with wedding prep on friday there was no way we could have done ut ourselves!

Amy July 28, 2010 at 8:57 am

I’m so sorry to hear about your camera and the lost photos. Just remember that you now have your WHOLE life to take photos with Marshall. I know it’ s not the same, but there will be lots of other photos that will cover your life together. (Also, on a more personal note, this happened on a family vacation when I was about 8. As a result, I have more vivid memories of that trip than any other vacation, because I was forced to keep the memories in my mind instead of relying on the photos). I’m keeping my fingers crossed the camera shows up, though!!

Shannon Fox July 28, 2010 at 9:00 am

I’m so sorry about your card. That would break my heart as well. I did a very similar thing when I was a sophomore in high school. My sister and I went on a once in a lifetime trip to France with a group of our best friends (all of us were in French class together). I also left my camera on the plane. I was so so sad. Luckily a good friend of mine knew how upset I was, and got copies of all of his photos made for me. Not the same of course, but it surely is nice to have some pictures to remember the trip by. Especially now that I’m a 33 year old Mama of three. I’ll pray that the camera shows up.

Tamizn July 28, 2010 at 9:38 am

Oooooooo bad times thats not good : (

On the up side the food looks amazing and your dress! Wow you look beautiful! x x

LC @ Let Them Eat Lentils July 28, 2010 at 9:49 am

My parents lost their camera when they came to visit me in Spain and lost ALL the pictures :( There was this picture of me with the most gorgeous, famous bullfighter in Madrid and that’s the one I really remember. I was so nervous to ask him for a picture and then it was lost anyway.

I really hope you find it in one of the suitcases!!

Stephanie@ avocado nation July 28, 2010 at 9:49 am

I am so sorry about all of your cameras! But at least you have the memories and no one can ever take those away.

Well, when I was 5, I lost a stuffed version of Rainbow Brite’s horse at a meat market in Africa. I was DEVASTATED. Understandably, I got over it.

During my recent cross-county move, I lost an envelope with 700 euros that my dad had given me. I beat myself about it for days because I am unemployed and could really use the money. I had to keep telling myself that everyone loses things and that it doesn’t make me a bad person. It’s so hard to let that stuff go though, trust me. But, we are all human.

Olivia @ Blissful Runner July 28, 2010 at 9:51 am

I killed my camera on my honeymoon too! FYI, point and shoots and the Caribbean Sea do not play well together! I’m so sorry you are going though the same disappointment times two!! :(

Tay July 28, 2010 at 10:05 am

OH NO! I’m so sorry about your cameras :-( The worst. I’m praying your DSLR returns to you safe and sound.

1. N/A!
2. Well I’ve lost 2 sets of nice diamond earrings. I suck with earrings. They just fall out of my ears. I’ve also lost my nice 6 month old point & shoot. Man I was upset about that one too.

Corinne (breathe and savor) July 28, 2010 at 10:11 am

Aw what a wonderful event!! I am sorry it was stressful. I cannot imagine doing something like that myself…kudos to you my dear. I absolutely love the tiramisu with your names! Super cute.

RIP your camera(s)

Looking forward to the wedding day recap!

hundredtenpounds July 28, 2010 at 10:14 am

Jasmine (Sweet and Fit) July 28, 2010 at 10:38 am

congrats again girl! thanks for talking me out of hosting my own dress rehearsal dinner – I thought it wouldnt be much work to just buy plenty of premade things and just set everything out – I didn’t realize how much work it really is!

peanutbutterfingers July 28, 2010 at 11:45 am

woohooooo – you’re back!!! so excited for all the wedding posts to come!

your rehearsal dinner looked perfect and so wonderfully “you.” sorry it was so much work though!

Lindsay @ The Ketchup Diaries July 28, 2010 at 12:01 pm

Love that you’re concentrating on your new life and not trying to do too much. The gym will ALWAYS be there. Just remember that. Sorry about the cameras…def worth a few tears but remember things are always worse for someone else. That’s how I keep myself grounded when o just want to scream!!

Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) July 28, 2010 at 12:08 pm

I am in LOVE with that picture of just you. It is GORGEOUS!!!
And thank you for the words of advice. :) Very impressed that you did your own rehersal dinner!

Katie July 28, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Aw….so sorry about the camera misadventures!! I’ll say a prayer for the lost camera. ;-)

Paige (Running Around Normal) July 28, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Ahh Janetha! I am so sorry about your cameras!! If it makes you feel any better, I lost my honeymoon camera for 6 months after the honeymoon, and it miraculously appeared!! Nevermind the fact that after that I lost the memory card that the pictures were on…
Sounds like although a lot of work, the rehearsal dinner was a blast!
My rehearsal dinner was at restaurant on the beach in FL.
Lessons learned:
If you think it’s a good idea to take shots of patron the night before your wedding, don’t.
Even if your cousin is buying rounds and rounds for you and the wedding party, and every one else is partaking, don’t :)

emily July 28, 2010 at 12:56 pm

1. My wedding was tiny so my rehersal dinner was tiny too, thank goodness! We went to a restaurant with a fixed dinner menu (in-laws paid and organized).

2. My camera actually, on a plane! LOL. Buuuuut, I called and got it back, you should too – call the airline!

BroccoliHut July 28, 2010 at 2:24 pm

So sorry that you lost those pictures! Perhaps the camera gods will smile upon you, and it will show up.
1. Favorite side salad: Greek with lots of artichoke hearts:)
2. Most valuable thing that I have lost…perhaps my portable DVD player? But then again, I have a sneaking suspicion that one of my sisters is hoarding it somewhere.

ari July 28, 2010 at 3:46 pm

oh, how i missed your posts! so glad you’re back!

Heather July 28, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Janetha, I am so sorry about your cameras. I am praying your camera will turn up. Looking at your pics and hearing you describe everything brings tears to my eyes. Congrats on your wedding!

Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) July 28, 2010 at 4:28 pm

I’m so sorry about the cameras Janetha! That’s horrible. I will keep thinking good thoughts. Maybe someone will turn it in.

My cell phone was stolen on our honeymoon in Italy. I put it in my checked luggage on the plane from Rome and Venice and it was gone. I was so upset.

Our rehearsal dinner was at a local restaurant with about 40 people. It was fabulous and I miss it!

suzanne July 28, 2010 at 6:13 pm

Hopefully someone will find the camera! And i hope you get your DSLR back soon.
Looks like everyone had a great time at the rehearsal dinner, too bad it took so much work.
You and Marshall look absolutely awesome :)

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) July 28, 2010 at 7:24 pm

Wow, I am doing just part of the wedding catering myself and it is a SUPER huge amount of work! I can not imagine doing the whole rehearsal dinner! Props to you, girl- it looks amazing.

And SO sorry about your cameras :( I hope the pictures you have are good at least!

For our rehearsal dinner, we are having a big feast at a local Italian restaurant in Nick’s hometown we all love. Complete with Tiramisu as well!

I lost my whole purse on a train back from NYC once. Over 100 photos, $50, my whole makeup case, and pretty much everything dear to me was in it… terrible, terrible experience.

Barbara July 29, 2010 at 11:55 am

So sorry about your cameras! Id be devastated! Maybe with so many followers and bloggy friends, someone will put the word out and find it? Wishful thinking!
You look beyond jaw droppingly beautiful in that close up picture of you and the beer bottle! GORGEOUS! Everything looks amazing! At least you have other ppls pictures to look at until you get yours recovered! Can’t wait to read more!

Danica July 29, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Ok ~ I had to get caught! That sucks about camera #1 – totally something I’d do – big cameras and me are not friends. But, really, I am just so sad for camera #2. You should tell the people even if they don’t return the camera, return the SD card :D I’ll say some prayers that you get it back….

I LOVE the flower girls and the fact that you both ate each other’s cake (the names – get your mind out of the gutter!)

Love ya!

xoxo ~ me

P.S. I can’t remember what our rehearsal dinner was since it was just Jay & I….um, probably some restaurant on St. Martin LOL

actorsdiet July 29, 2010 at 6:35 pm

we had a chinese banquet w karaoke as our rehearsal dinner. it was intense – 10 courses!!! this was to make up for the fact that our wedding reception was just finger food/cocktail party.

Karin July 29, 2010 at 10:40 pm

Oh god I SO need to catch up with my google reader… and I meant to congratulate you for ages! (Yeah I know, I’m embarassingly late..)Your mum’s post is so adorable! It seems like you had the best wedding and mmm all that food of the rehearsal dinner makes me drool!!
&btw: you’re jealous??? man, you just got married to a wonderful guy and went on a freaking honeymoon! I’M jealous! :)

Karin July 30, 2010 at 5:26 am

Damn.. I shouldn’t write comments when I’m getting distracted by work ;) and forget half the things I wanted to write…
I actually wanted to say sorry that you lost/broke your cameras. I would definitely feel like crying too.. :(

Holly at Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices August 2, 2010 at 10:49 am

I missed you & the blog :)
Sorry I just got back from vacay, so I’m playing catch up.
Lovin’ everything about your rehersal dinner, but I’m sure it was a TON of work…probably wayyyy more than people realized. looks awesome though. :)
