hello!
how was your monday? mine was actually a lot better than i had expected it to be. love it when that happens. i have a lot of ridiculous issues going on at my day job at the moment, so i am under more stress than usual. because of said issues, i have just been going into work each day expecting the worst..but today was not too bad! especially for a monday.
let’s talk about other stuff now. warning: long rambles ahead. feel free to skip to the food.
today was day number one of the 12-week fitmixer bootcamp i’ve signed up for. one of the requirements of the bootcamp is to send in your weight each monday morning. you may or may not know this, but i don’t weigh myself. i haven’t in over two years, believe it or not. back in the day i had a bad habit of hopping on the scale morning, noon, and night and it was stupid.. so i stopped hopping on the scale all together.
awhile back, i reviewed a device called the zero scale. the zero scale records your weight without telling you how much you weigh, then each time you hop on it tells you either how much you lost or gained since your very first weigh in and since your most recent weigh in. it’s a great tool for those who are wanting to drop some pounds but don’t want a specific number to mess with their brains. for the sake of reviewing, i did use the scale for awhile during livefit and i did drop some pounds (more than five, less than ten–somewhere in there. i didn’t have a lot to lose.) i hadn’t hopped on that scale since my livefit days.
anyway, let me get to the point. i hopped on the zero scale today because i decided that is how i will track my weight during the fitmixer bootcamp. the zero scale told me that it had been 115 days since i last stepped on the scale, and there was a gain. not some huge, significant gain–but yeah–a gain. i figured this would be the case, because after livefit i definitely let my eating habits loosen up a bit. not a lot–just a little. i got into the habit of eating too much sunflower seed butter and mindlessly snacking after work when i was bored and not genuinely hungry. on top of that, my workouts went from the intense, nearly two-hour-long livefit routines to workouts at gold’s or GPP that last around 45 minutes–tops. i also sit around all day (which is why i started up move more in may!) and i definitely have been eating more calories than needed for someone at my activity level. because of ALL this, the reading on the scale this morning didn’t surprise me a bit. the good part is that it also didn’t change my mood. i didn’t get sad or mad or have negative feelings about myself like the old me may have. i just though, “huh.. that’s not a shocker. i have been eating way too much food lately.” and then i got ready for work.
it was actually a pretty cool feeling to not care about the weight gain–i am not sure that i’ve ever experienced that feeling before. EVER. in all of my almost 29 years (eeek, in less than a month!) it makes me happy because it means i am at a good place mentally. sure, i may not be as slim and trim as i was 115 days ago, but i still look damn good (in my opinion.) i still fit into my clothes, i am gaining more and more muscle as i continue to go to GPP (marshall even complimented me on my hamstrings just the other day), and i am able to successfully complete any workout i try. i feel strong, fit, and healthy.
one other requirement of the fitmixer bootcamp is before and after photos. i always dread these for some reason! i would much rather have my photo taken with all my clothes ON, thankyouverymuch. but rules are rules, so momma b and i took photos over the weekend. i uploaded mine this afternoon and, to be honest, cringed a little. i didn’t bat an eye at the weight gain i saw this morning, but when i saw those before photos i got a little queasy. yes, i am being a bit dramatic, they weren’t THAT bad, but they weren’t that good, either. i am happy with my body and especially with my muscles! but i think i know where those extra pounds ended up, if you know what i mean.
even though i didn’t love the before photos, looking at them wasn’t a negative experience for me. it was more empowering and motivating than anything else. today is day one of a new challenge for me! and a LOT of people i love are doing the bootcamp with me. it’s going to be a good time! i know that 12 weeks from now i will feel even more fit and strong and healthy than i already do. i’m excited.
so those are my thoughts. i know i shout from the rooftops to throw away the scale and to not get hung up on your weight–and i still think that’s the best way to live. i also think that some of the extra weight could be added muscle. but the photos tell me that not ALL of it is added muscle. ha.
i just wanted to be real with you guys and let you know what’s on my mind. i usually don’t blog about this sort of thing because it seems to spark a lot of controversy, but you and i both know i am not shy so i figured i might as well put it out there!
i decided to document the whole day today since i have to track it myself for bootcamp. i realized two things:
- logging all my meals into myfitnesspal.com is a bitch (pardon my language, but it is!)
- before today, i was eating way more than i thought i was (both with portion sizes and random handfuls of this and that.)
even though it’s a pain, i think this meal tracking thing will be a good thing for me. it worked well with body for life, and my meal plan/calorie goals are very similar to when i did that. i know a lot about using the fist/palm method to eat the right portion sizes, so i may opt to do that rather than meticulously tracking things each day. either way, i am definitely going to be paying more attention to what i am eating.
holy crap! i managed to say a whole lot and haven’t even recapped my day yet! here we go…
breakfast @ 8 AM: strawberries & cream protein shake, coffee with almond milk.

i love, love, love my new keurig! k-cups are the jam. i always knocked them but had never tried them until blend retreat.. i am sold. however, i am not a huge fan of using a new cup every day. i need to invest in the reusable basket thingamajigs.
snack @ 11 AM: raspberry fage.

my heart lies with chobani, but my wallet sometimes gets face because it’s at costco. dear chobani, please get back into costco!!
lunch @ 2 PM: 2 servings baby carrots, 1 large jazz apple, 1 TB sunflower seed butter, 1 whole egg+3 egg whites with ketchup.

wow. microwaved eggs look disgusting. now i remember why i don’t photograph ALL my meals anymore. please forgive me for posting that photo, kay? moving on..
fitmixer bootcamp test @ 4:30 PM.

day one of the bootcamp was a quick little test to see my starting point. it reminded me of the insanity fit test. each move was done for one minute with a 30 second rest between (except for where noted.) here are my scores:
- burpees: 23
- supermans: 61
- plyo lunges: 54 (27 each leg)
- tricep pushups: 36
- low plank hold: 1 minute 10 seconds
- chest push ups: 37
- wall sit hold: 1 minute 30 seconds
- roundhouse knees: 104 right, 102 left
- jumping jacks: 91
- side hover dips: 46 right, 43 left
snack @ 5 PM: nuts about granola custom blend granola + almond milk.

i have SOOO much of this granola! gotta eat it up! it has chia seeds, almonds, honey, and dried cherries. it’s great with almond milk or even just straight up.
i went to GPP at 5:45 for this kettlebell workout.. made it through six rounds! IT WAS HARD (for me.) i am proud of myself.
dinner @8:30 PM: spaghetti squash with bison marinara & asparagus.

i saw bison at costco on saturday so i picked it up for a change. then marshall told me he doesn’t want to eat cows or bison or anything like that anymore.. so i kind of failed. but i only bought 2 pounds so it’ll be gone soon. for what it’s worth, it tastes amazing and is protein packed.
snack will be at 10 PM: whole wheat toast with raspberry jam & PB2.
no photo, because it hasn’t happened. but it will!
i drank a gallon of water today and also had a serving of fitmixer aminos during the test. after the long, tedious task of plugging everything in, here are the totals i came up with for today:
- 1365 calories (goal is 1300-1400)
- 167g carbs (goal is 163 grams)
- 99g protein (goal is 98 grams)
- 37g fat (goal is 29 grams)
so, as you can see, i ended up pretty close to the outline given to me. i didn’t plan ahead because life has been crazy, but i think with a little more planning and a few weeks of paying closer attention to what’s going in my mouth, this whole task won’t be as annoying. that’s what i found with body for life.. the first few weeks were a pain, but then it became second nature.
day one down–83 to go! and i promise that i won’t do these full day posts ALL the time. i know they can be a tad boring. thanks for hearing me out on those rambles up top! good talk.
i am bad at coming up with questions lately, if you haven’t noticed.. just leave me your thoughts on anything and everything.. or nothing. it’s up to you.

I totally agree! Logging in my fitness pal gets to be a pain. I thought it was super cool at first, but then got extremely sick of it. But I wish you good luck because it does help so much. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for protein bars? I am doing a quick grocery haul and have been looking for some with more protein than ThinkThin and Larabars offer. Thoughts?
Way to go with your test! It definitely kicked my butt this morning. And as for this whole calorie counting thing…that’s going to be my biggest battle. I eat mindfully, not by number. Though it’s definitely interesting to find out I didn’t eat enough protein but had more than enough fat before I even get to my final snack…
I am with you there, Katie! I apparently eat a shitload of fat.
Counting calories sucks! I’m hoping that using the app on my phone will make it easier, but I still don’t like it. I hadn’t weighed myself in 2012 so I felt VERY sad about having to step on the scale for this. I thought about buying a zero scale, but I didn’t want to spend the money. Oh well. I’m excited to watch my progress over the next 12 weeks!
On a side note – I miss yoooouuuuuu!!!! We need a Blend Reunion this fall. :)
I installed that app on every device I own. I used to be really good about counting calories … back in my bad ED days. I tend to avoid it (and weighing myself) now because I know it makes me crazy. Hoping that I don’t go crazy with this bootcamp!
i miss your questions! and you.
well, i for one think you look fabulous! i can’t wait to hear how the bootcamp continues to go for you ladies!
Love this post and your outlook on fitness and weight….so refreshing in the world of blogging today! Keep it up, looking forward to your posts on this!
Is the fage yogurt good? I have tried the plain with honey as a costco sample but never the flavored. The awesome sample lady was yelling, “Get your fahhhhhyeaaaa!” I am going to love reading your bootcamp stuff so keep posting.
I love the flavored Fage! My favorites are peach and cherry pomegranate, though I also like cherry and raspberry. I get the plain as well, but I like to keep some flavored around to tote around easily.
Ooh! Your dinner sounds fabulous! :)
Nice work! Sounds way intense!!
I love Fage yogurt but then I love yogurt. I like Chobani too but I’m weird and like being able to adjust how much fruit goes in! I also love the Greek God’s honey vanilla! GOOD JOB on your fit test.. very impressive!! just thinking about doing 30 something push ups makes my arms hurt! What are roundhouse knees?
It’s when you pull your knee diagonally up to your chest repeatedly with the other leg grounding you. Hard to explain.. let me see if I can find a video..

i’ve been so glad to read that i’m not the only one complaining about logging my food. such a PAIN. glad that myfitnesspal finally added the bar code scanner talk about a life saaaaaver.
I think you look amazing. When I saw you walk in tonight, I noticed some cool shoulder stuff. It’s new.
Loved your perspective on not getting hung up on your weight.
Wow! you did a great job with that summary of your day. Be proud of yourself and keep going!!
I don’t comment much but I LOVE your blog, even more so after reading this post! I love how real you keep it and that bit about weight gain struck a chord for me too…I never weigh myself anymore but I feel (from the mirror) that I’ve put on weight but funny enough, I am not too bothered. I look good, feel good, workout well and am enjoying life. Mentally, I don’t think I could go back to being so rigid, at least not now! I’m excited to read how you get on with the boot camp and good luck!
Counting calories- ugh. I always get excited for it for a couple days and then get frustrated because it’s too time consuming. Um and yeah microwaved egg whites never photograph well. Come to think of it alot of food I eat doesn’t. I think your pictures are good though. :) your Mother’s Day looked like a fun one! :)
LOL! green food muffins always look good to me stuftmama!
I think its fabulous that you don’t weigh yourself! I am trying to focus on doing the same. I’m also trying to focus on a new plan. I got the BFL book, but haven’t had a chance to read it. Life with a peanut, work & teaching is so darn busy!! I haven’t tried that fage. I’m going to grab one
i’d say yo gained a whole new perspective as well. Good feeling. Just in time for our 30’s too. hehe.
Love you friend.
;-)
I actually do not own a scale over here! I have to go buy one today and turn my weight in a couple days late!
The whole calorie counting thing takes a little to get used to, like whoa! I am not sure but it’s saying I have to eat 2300-2500 calories a day on my plan and I did not meet that yesterday!
I am just hoping for the best, try to meet that today ;)
Love you!!
That’s because people tend to eat a lot less than they should. And it start a lifetime cycle of worrying, or not eating what you truly need.
Research actually shows that the average woman can eat 2300-2600 well and fine up until menopause (and this is only a woman who walks 30 mins briskly per day). The problem is that we live in society that is all about exercise and low calories. People end up eating less than they should or dieting or going into dieting cycles etc and end up with confused bodies and minds. It’s really sad all the calorie misnomers. We spend so much time tricking our bodies or taking it in circles that it gets confused and either starts to gain or maintain on much lower amounts than it *really* could.
Calorie counting is key to losing. I’ve done it now for 10 years..second nature. BTW: Love the meal ideas, so helpful! Do you have the recipe for that bison over spaghetti squash anywhere?
No, but I can tell you what I did! I chopped up an onion and sauteed it with a pound of ground bison, fresh basil, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Then I added 15 oz can of tomato sauce and 15 oz can of diced tomatoes and simmered for 15 minutes!
Can’t wait to hear more about your bootcamp.
I could only make it through 5 rounds this morning because of those darn pushups!
Don’t get too discouraged with MyFitnessPal after you’ve done it for a bit you get the hang of it and it is seriously so easy and fast. Plus, you can group foods you eat all the time together as a meal for even quicker tracking.
I like your eats. Can you give the measurements for the smoothie?
Those calories are terrifically low though. That’s barely above the average person’s BMR. Are you sure you are not suppressing your metabolsim and actally “hanging” onto to weight just because you don’t eat enough?
I’m older than you and need to eat a lot more than that and my form of exercise is daily walking. And I’m no exceptional person, trust me :)
Anyway, great posts. I love sunbutter too. It’s addictive.
I didn’t measure everything for the shake. But it was about 1.5 cups milk, 1 cup strawberries, 1 scoop vanilla protein, ice, vanilla extract, xanthan gum.
I left a long cement about this below, but in a nutshell I said this calorie level was new for me. I logged some past days and have been around 2000-2100 daily thanks to extra bowls of cereal and ice cream. I burn around 250 calories in my daily workout and sit the rest of the day, so 2100 is probably too high. But that’s not saying 1350 is good for me. It’s what was given to me by an RD. While I wasn’t hungry, it was hard for me to not overeat out of habit. I’m probably best around 1600-1700, but I’ll give this plan a shot for a few days at least. Thank you for your concern!
The shake sounds good. Lately I’ve been adding a tablespoon of coconut or flaxseed oil to my smmoothies for heft and fat (I’m all about the fat personally).
Yeah, I have been underweight before and dietitians have told me to eat 1500 or 2000 to “gain”…so sick and obviously wrong advice. A lot of “health professionals” I think are already on the restrictive-eating-spectrum as it is.
I really wish people would never diet in the first place and mess up their bodies. We all honestly can eat lots more without more than a brisk 30 minute walk. I think we all end up fooling up and sending mixed messages when we start the cycles.
Anyway, take care. Myfitness tracking would drive me NUTS…I tried it before and then I was like “really…can you not do more with yourself and your time then counting these damn numbers and macros all the time”…ugh..the obsession is so unnerving and frustrating.
I’m impressed that you can do 36 tricep pushups! They are not easy!
How did they generate the target macros for you? I don’t want to nit pick, but the protein and fat requirements in particular seem quite low.
An RD calculated this. I usually eat 40/40/20 but this is 50/30/20. It’s not too far off the mark of what I’ve been doing. I’m going to give it a fair chance and if I hate it, I’ll go back to 40/40/20
I was thinking the same thing! I would really hate those 50-30-20 macros. :( I am around your height and I can never lose weight on 1350 cals (which livefit recommends for me).. I seem to drop weight when I eat 1600-1800. I am interested in hearing more about this program, though and seeing how it works out for you!! I think you always look great!
Haha I have to say I don’t hate them, I would eat 90% carbs if my body was OK with that. I am a carb monster! But I find I maintain best with 40% protein–or that’s what I have found in years past–so we will see how this plan is. It’s not far off from 40/40/20, though. I was glad to see it still was 20% fat. Love me some avocado :) And thanks for saying I look great! I appreciate that!
Yes, me too. I do no real exercise other than a walk and an office job, and I lose on low calories too. I know people hate raising cals cause of weight gain, but usually the gain is only a preliminary action, then it eventually settles out and your able to maintain on much higher amounts.
20% fat would be too low for me. Fats are so necessary and healthy and I get more than 45% daily (avocados, full fat dairy, fatty fish, olive-flax-coconut oil, whole egg yolks, yum). I love her recipes here: http://www.thedailyavocado.com
Your body is amazing so I can’t imagine what it’ll be in 12 weeks!
2 things
My 29th birthday is quickly coming up too. Eek! Where has the decade since i graduated from high school gone?
And I love, love, love that GPP posts their workouts online. As an underemployed university grad, desperate to try crossfit but without the room in my budget to pay for it, I love taking advantage of the workouts. Sometimes, I have to modify because I don’t have the equipment but I think it’ll do my body good to do some strength training.
I’ve been a long time fan of your blog, but I’m a bit disappointed to see that calorie count up there. I assumed that you, more than most other HLBers, would actually eat enough food. That is certainly below your BMR. Can we say hello muscle loss with all that cardio and low calories?
Hey Kelly, thanks for your concern. Like I said above, until yesterday, I was eating a lot more than I thought. I plugged a fee days of eats in from last week out of curiosity and I was around 2000-2100 calories. And a person of my height and sedentary level really doesn’t need that many calories, I don’t burn that many in a day– that’s for sure! My BMR is low due to my height and the fact that i dont move much. I also dont do a lot of cardio, i hate it!! However, the tracking and eating specifically 1350 yesterday was a first for me. I definitely was surprised at the change. I wasn’t hungry at all since I was eating 6x all day, but it was definitely less than I’m used to. Plus I usually eat bowls of cereal after work and ice cream at night, which is how my calories add up quick. I was given this calorie range by an RD for the boot camp I’m doing, so its not like I picked it for myself. However, I do think the calorie range that work best for me is 1600-1700. Chances are I will revert to that range, but I did want to give this a fair chance and try. Never in my life have I been an under eater– only an over eater. I have a very hard time not eating too much and when people talk about how they couldn’t get enough calories in in a day I can never relate! Just wanted to make that clear. This calorie count was given to me from a professional, I’m going to give it a chance, but of I hate it, I’ll increase up to something I can handle. Xo
Glad to see your response on this one lady. You can do low calorie if you’re eating the right things. And definitely keep in mind that shorter people have lower calorie intakes. My friend Shelly and I used to track together on LiveStrong — both to maintain but just to see what the hell we were actually eating. She’s 6’2″. I’m 5’2″. It would piss me off SO hard that she would get nearly twice the amount of calories that I got for the day.
Just wondering, how is this a first for you? You’ve tracked your meals on your blog before and it was always around 1300/1400 kcal.
Let me clarify–I meant a first for me to religiously have a calorie range given to me and have to hit it every day, have to log it into a database, and have to stick with it and REPORT IN to an RD. Sorry, that phrase was vague, but that’s what I meant by eating this way/tracking this way is a first for me. It is. I’ve never had to count my calories every day like I do with this bootcamp. It’s a first and it’s new! And it’s a shocker. When I did BFL, I ate 1300-1500 calories each day from eyeballing and was trying to lose fat. And when I try to clean up my diet/lose fat now days, I revert to a few days of eating that way–but it is not monitored, not long term, and I am not committed to it like I am this time. Having my calorie range given by an RD and being monitored to hit a certain number is a first for me. The days I have tracked in the past are just that–days. But like I said, the past 4 or 5 months I have been eating over 2,000 calories a day just because I don’t pay attention. I haven’t paid attention to my calorie intake in a very long time–while my food intake has been healthy food–the volume and frequency and calories have been too much (for a person of my size/activity level.) The change from overeating every day to eating calories for weight loss and being monitored is a new challenge for me. Hope that clears it up, because you are right, I HAVE eaten at this calorie range in the past. But not on a program like the fitmixer bootcamp. It makes sense, though, because in order to lose weight you have to have a calorie deficit.. if my BMR is 1300 and I am burning 250-300 calories in a workout, eating 1350 would be a good number for weight loss. That’s the way she explained it to me and it does make a lot of sense. I don’t think it’s some drastically tiny amount of calories. I just think (okay, I know) it is a lot less than I have been eating lately.
Tracking is a pain but it’s proven to work – you were impressively close to your recommendations!
And this is why I’m still a reader…Most bloggers would have either deleted my comment or found some snappy way to respond. I’m glad to see that you are very conscious about how your body will respond to a different caloric count than you are used to eating. I know from unfortunate experience that while I was able to lose on 1400 calories, I also gained that lovely “skinny fat” look from dropping muscle mass.
I would never delete your comment! I know you left it out of concern and not to be rude or anything. I am by no means a professional and so what I blog about is simply what I am doing with my life, my opinions, and the like. When someone has something to say about it, I welcome the comments and actually APPRECIATE the feedback and your thoughts. I genuinely enjoy reading different perspectives and realize that just because this is the plan that was given to me does not mean it is the plan that necessarily will work for me. I should have clarified that this is just a starting point, and the RD will be reassessing me each week with weekly check ins. She is very thorough and will adjust the plan according to what is and isn’t working for me. She didn’t just say “Here’s your plan for the next 12 weeks.” It is reassessed each Monday, so this is just a starting/jumping off point and each week the RD will look at my progress and make adjustments. The important thing is that I trust her and I know she won’t lead me to do anything harmful to myself. Oh and believe me, I have already decided to up my protein intake because the last thing I want to do is lose my VERY HARD EARNED muscle! I love the look of muscle–it’s attractive in my eyes. Again, Kelly, thanks for your comments. I am grateful to have you as a reader!
I have friends that get the stubborn “pudge” even though they kill themselves with exercise and eat such low cals. Like I said before, a lot of dietitians just follow that ‘oh well if you are x, then you need x to lose and x to gain”. Its just some formula and its not legit. So many dietitians and holistic professinoals had me all fooled up. I am only 5 feet, but I swear once you really get up (consistently up) things can level off and that “stubborn pudge” can go away (no “hardcore” exercise and restriction necessary).
Thank you for being real! I am there with you. I sent in the pix I posted a few weeks ago as my LiveFit progress as my “before” photos. I always look back at those and cringe a few days after I post them. I take them randomly when I feel really empowered or proud of my workout / body progress … and then when I have a bad day and see them, I gag.
I’m confused about my calories. First they sent me a plan that said 1400-1700 calories per day (that’s kind of a wide range, but I figured I’d do close to 1400 on rest days, and 1700 on days with heavier workouts). Then when they sent the updated plan, it said 1600-1700. When I’ve counted using LiveStrong before, even losing .5 lbs a week I got less than 1300 calories per day. I asked them about it … no answer. So I’m going to stick to 1500 since that’s in the middle I guess. And we’ll see where that gets me.
Also — I realized the same thing — I’ve not been tracking food for a while, and I’ve been eating a TON more than I thought I was. And I never really paid attention to the nutrients other than salt and sugar … come to find out that I eat a TON more fat than I thought (nut butters … nut butters) and that getting all the carbs I need is damn near impossible since I just don’t eat carbs (budget: non-gluteny carbs = freaking expensive).
Anyway — I’m excited to be doing this too! Thanks for sharing.
I try to use my fitness pal too and I agree with what you said to the T. It is a pain in the butt…. but I guess its good to use to record what you ate all day! Can’t wait to follow your journey through the fitmixer bootcamp
Great post! I am currently “double tracking” with Weight Watchers and MFP. Talk about a pain!
Also, just thought I’d like you know about K Caps. They are cheaper than the reusable cups. All you do is use a normal K Cup, peel off the lid, rinse out the grounds, and then next time use a K Cap (http://www.amazon.com/Kaps-K-Cups-Brush-Reuse-Keurig/dp/B002TIPU7O). You can reuse the cups a bunch of times before having to throw them away! So you’ll still need to buy the cups, but not nearly as often :)
Had never heard of K caps. Great share. Thanks!
Ooh I’m so glad I read this! I have the reusable k-cup but it is total garbage for whatever reason. My mom and other friend also have them and don’t find them very good at all – these look like an awesome alternative.
Ohhh thank you for this!
I’ve definitely gone through periods of being obsessed with the scale. Back at my lowest weight, I would weigh myself at least twice a day- sometimes more. I would not eat anything, barely drink any water, and see how low the number would be. It was BAD and for some reason, it made me feel so awesome and validated to see such a low # on the scale.
Well, I’m about 20 lbs heavier now, and will be weighing myself soon. I know I’ve gained weight over the last few months from being so stressed and mindless eating- but man, I need to not let it dictate how i feel about myself. And it’s never going to be that high again. :)
Your dinner looks SCRUMPTIOUS, have to add that to my meal plan.
My calories are similar to yours, and I’m a sedentary accountant too, and maybe similar height? (5’3″ here) So my calorie range didn’t surprise me, but I definitely am in weight loss phase, so I would have thought (hoped for my sake) that maintenance would bring me back to the 1500-1600 range. I’m sure Candice will adjust once she gets a few weeks numbers back from us.
Thanks for being honest about the pics. I have NEVER taken a pic in my sports bra, and I practically had a meltdown before hitting send on that email. LOVED the intro video, which I watched before sending that email – seriously, it was like they were talking me off a ledge.
5’1″ here.. and yes, don’t move at all. I think that maintaining should be around 1600-1700 so I am sure I will bump up to that later in the bootcamp!
Love these kind of posts. I had never heard of that kind of scale. I have a romance with my scale…more of an obsession. Sometimes I am good and can not even think about it for awhile, but without even fully thinking about it, i will pull it out of the cupboard. I am getting better…i think?
I saw both Katie (healthy diva eats) and yourself doing this bootcamp. It was full by the time I looked into it(major procrastinator here). Maybe the next group. Summer be coming!
I’ve gotten a little loose with my eating habits lately too and I just started tracking my meals yesterday. It was a little shocking to see what I was eating —- I’m very bad for having a little of this or that while I’m cooking or for having a little snacking binge when I get home from work before I start anything! I agree it’s a pain to write it all down, but I’m going to feel much better when I trim the extras :)
You already know this but I totally agree with the scale. I haven’t weighed myself in a bit now and I feel great about it. I want to step on it but I KNOW that it doesn’t say the whole answer! I want to feel great about how I look and not like the scale determine my mood! Excited to see your journey:)
Great job on the 6 rounds! I just barely made it 4 rounds! You rocked it!
Loved hearing about your day and am exciting to hear more about your bootcamp! I use myfitnesspal too! Definitely keeps me accountable! Add me as a friend if you want! My user name is just alimoll
Have a great day!
thanks for your honesty! i really don’t believe in ‘plans’ because each person (depending on a plethora of factors) can eat lower or higher than what is allotted and gain or lose weight. if i had to eat 1800cals i would probably be on the verge of being sick. i would feel literally stuffed to the gills! but then again, my activity level is low and am a small person too :)
i think it’s only normal to scrutinize every minute detail in photos. i mean it’s hard not to when we are conditioned to do it from a very young age (oh hay media! thanks for screwing with us).
i’m 15lbs lighter than when i first started my blog and i had people tell me i was ‘perfect’ then and now i’m ‘too thin.’ i just can’t win! i’m at the point now where like Rhianna, i ran out of f*cks to give. so…i’m just gonna roll with the punches and say i’m sorry to those who want the curvier version of me, it’s just not in the cards since i’m allergic to wheat. it is what it is you know?
Thanks for your comment, love! I don’t think people realize that I am so sedentary and short and have a really low BMR to begin with, then my minimal calorie burn during workouts doesn’t really do a lot for me. It’s extremely easy for me to gain weight on this little frame. Especially when I am packing in 2000 calories.. um, NOT required. Especially when those calories are cereal and ice cream ;)
Thanks for everything. Love ya!
awesome day! i wanted to sign up for bootcamp so bad but its prob not a good time (preggo and all)…maybe after? i loved the bootcamps we did at blend…love a good, hard workout! btw, counting calories is so hard hah but if u can do it, thats great!
I love all these details! And I know how you feel with the scale, I rarely look at it – the last time I was weighed was at the doctor. I hate tracking my calories, just because it’s a pain, but I probably should start doing that again for a period of time to see where I’m at.
I am so interested to keep hearing about your bootcamp! I had a personal trainer about a year and a half ago. He told me my ideal calories were around 1200 for my activity. I logged EVERYTHING and it was a pain. Funny thing is that even though I was eating complete crap I was still staying in my calorie range. Now I eat a lot healthier and still stay around 1200 each day but I never lose weight. Probably has to do with all the beer…. oh well :)
Why does Marshall want to stop eating those meats?
just curious!
ordered Ftimixer today. Wahoo! thanks for being rad, as always!
not sure.. he just said it the other day, and i said okay, ha!
I appreciate your honesty and its so great you’ve come to a place that you can be more accepting of the ‘ebbs and flows’ of weight, etc…and realize that number on the scale does not matter at all if you are healthy, happy, and active!
I’d actually be very interested to see more posts like this one (even with calorie breakdowns if that wouldn’t be too onerous for you?) I have Binge Eating Disorder and struggle to stick to 3000 calories per day (I know, most readers will probably be disgusted by this). I have no idea how to reduce my calories (as in, how to put meals together during a day, not ‘just’ eating less) effectively and hit certain macros…it all just seems so overwhelming and I don’t know where to start.
I am also small (height, not weight!) at 5ft 3ins and I just don’t require the amount of calories that others do, or that the calculators tell me. I need less, and paradoxically that makes me binge through depression and hunger (and I am not asking to maintain an unrealistic weight, particularly given my extra-small frame and bone structure). This kind of post is always very helpful for me, just to know exactly what 1300 calories looks like.

Hey Jess,
You may be interested in Andrea’s blog at http://www.canyoustayfordinner.com . She has several days’ worth of photos at different calorie levels, which can be helpful to see. Also she has a great story and writes beautifully!

Thanks so much. I’ll have a look at Andrea’s blog now – it sounds like those examples would be really beneficial for me to see.
Sorry to reply twice – I have to ask myself how I didn’t find this blog before? It’s brilliant – so well written and a really refreshing approach towards weight loss. Thank you!
ooo. i love hearing all about this. i totally want to do it. i think it would help to have someone to report to. haha.
Love you.
I’m curious how different the fitmixer program is from your usual? The protein seems lower? I’ll have to read all these comments in my spare time ;)
It’s a 50/30/20 split instead of 40/40/20.. however, with my added ice cream and cereal bowls lately, I have been eating more like 60/20/20–haha, not kidding….
I love you! Always and forever!
I could never be one to count calories. Well I used to do this but in a very unhealthy way so I know now if I ever did it again, I would not be doing it for the right reasons. But I do understand how/why it works so well for so many people.
On a totally separate note, I’m a little jealous of your BLEND stash. I still have yet to try it! :)
girl you are amazing for doing this and sharing your journey!! and you look great to me, I am with you and judge the way my clothes fit not the scale. you have inspired me to get cleaner with my eats, I have been so stressed lately that eating has been last on mind. so I have been grabbing whatever…I need to get back into preparing my meals. ahh, one day I will once chaos leaves my life. :)

Ahhh yeah counting calories definitely sucks, but sometimes it’s the only way. However, for me, it definitely leads to compulsive tendencies…from an eating disorder from 10 or 11 years ago…so I don’t do it myself. However, I do recommend it to clients who are having a hard time geting the pounds off.
Anyway, I’m excited for you about the boot camp! I love that exciting feeling of beginning a program and looking forward to both the journey and the results!
Good lord, so I’ve read all the comments because I knew there would be a ton about that calorie number. Besides my workout, my days are sedentary too so I hear you there. Also, even if you and I were the same size and had the same activity level our bodies caloric maintenance could differ by hundreds. And maybe my body runs better on a high fat diet and you do better with carbs. Anyway, I’ve never heard of the zero scale. That’s a really awesome tool for people who need it. Your scores on the bootcamp test are KILLER. That tells you more than a scale ever could.
Thank you! Soooo true, I agree.. those score make me feel fit! And I am fit! And there is not a thing wrong with wanting to be a lean machine that is strong and healthy. Thanks for your comment!
I have had a similar experience with weighing myself. Back in my anorexic days, I weighed myself up to 5 times per day, and it really messed with my head. So then I stopped completely. I didn’t weigh myself for several years until I started having to do so for my hypothyroidism (it helps gauge which dosage of medication is appropriate). I gotta say, it’s been really getting me down lately, but reading this post inspires me to not be so hard on myself for a few extra L-Bs. Thanks for sharing!
