what does march 7th mean to you? anything special? is it your birthday? if so.. happy birthday!
march 7th means two things to me.
for one, today marks FIVE years since the worst injury of my life. wow, i can’t believe it’s been five whole years.

on march 7, 2007, i was snowboarding my life away. i went nearly every day back then.. before i got old and boring. i had really built my skills (and confidence) that season and was flying off 65’ jumps like it was totally normal. later in the day, the snow had become icy and sketchy, so when i went off the 65’ foot jump for the final, fateful time.. i overshot the landing. by a lot. i was going too fast and went sailing through the air. i missed the landing completely, and instead fell onto flat, hard ground. my arm broke my fall.. thank god it wasn’t my neck or my back or my skull, right?
i was in the hospital for a week and i went from the broken photo above to being part robot, which i still am today. jealous?

i also have a gnarly scar on my left arm. i usually tell people i got bit by a shark. i am surprised with how many people actually believe that lie.

but as you can see, it has faded a lot over the years.. like this photo, from 2008:

as far as the inside goes, i still have a little bit of pain if i work my upper body really hard. my left arm always gives me a little grief and it still isn’t quite as strong as ol’ righty, despite all the strength training i do. i am just glad i have an arm, though. look on the bright side, right?
i haven’t thrown myself off any big jumps since. and i don’t plan to. i am embracing that whole “better safe than sorry” motto. you can read a more detailed flashback in this post.
and the second reason i march 7th is significant?
well, it’s national cereal day! i know, i just can’t quit with the national food holidays. i am a sucker for celebrations. and for cereal.
don’t believe me? i did a quick search that says i posted about cereal 230 times.

addicted. i also found several photos of cereal.. and me eating cereal.

typical.
warning: long & random cereal rambles ahead.
next to ice cream, cereal is my favorite food in the entire world. and if i had to choose to eat only one thing for the rest of my life, i wouldn’t pick ice cream, i’d pick cereal. there’s just more of a variety and who knows how long the rest of my life might be, you know??
growing up, my favorite after school snack was a big bowl of fruity pebbles. to this day, i crave a bowl of cereal right when i walk in the door from work. i don’t always give into this craving, but i would say i do about 31% of the time. sure, that’s a good percentage. my very favorite cereals as a kid were fruity pebbles, cinnamon toast crunch, honey nut cheerios, and frosted flakes. they’re grrrrreat!
in junior high, i was super stoked on the a la carte lunch line. i was able to purchase an individual-size container of cinnamon toast crunch and a carton of 1% milk for a cool $1.25… which left me with a little extra change from my daily lunch money allowance. cereal and extra cash? don’t mind if i do. speaking of cinnamon toast crunch.. i made my own last year. it was delicious. dangerously delicious. i ate the whole batch in less than 24 hours. i blame mama pea for that one.

my love affair with cereal continued into my late teenage years, when i lived in london. the hostel i lived at offered a free breakfast that consisted of coffee, tea, white toast with jam, and two kinds of cereal: rice krispies and corn flakes. sometimes my mom would mail me honey bunches of oats (yes, all the way from america, she also mailed me ranch seasoning!) and i would gobble that up in a few days and then it was back to the free breakfast. it was during this time that i became a cereal mixer. i used to only eat one cereal at a time, but when you only have two cereals to choose from day in and day out, you get an itch for variation.. so i started combining my cereals. and i never looked back. i always combine my cereals now!

and, for good measure, how about exhibit C:

and by the way, all three of those cute spoons were gifts from momma b! she got them in costa rica.
my current favorite way to eat cereal is to blend up a vanilla protein shake using almond milk, a scoop of protein powder, and ice.. then using it as the “milk” for my cereal. this definitely helps me stay full for longer than using straight up milk.

i like the protein punch this method delivers.
another way to get protein with your cereal is to eat it with greek yogurt. i love topping chobani with cereal.

and then when the yogurt is gone, i fill the container up with more cereal and some milk. usually more than once. okay, usually more than twice.. hey, in my defense, those chobani containers are small!
i have made my own peanut butter chocolate protein cereal before.

each serving had 15 grams of protein, but sometimes it’s easier to just grab a box of kashi golean, yaknow?
in honor of today’s holiday, i asked my fellow fitfluential ambassadors for some unique, out of the (cereal) box ways to use cereal! here is what they came up with.
maria used uncle sam cereal to make gooey, three layer chocolate peanut butter brownies.

courtney (aka the cookie MASTER) made cookies using the latest and greatest cheerio variety: peanut butter.

brittany used brown crispy rice cereal to make a way more razzle dazzle treat than the plain old rice crispy treats.

julie used bran flakes (i love those!) to make a pumped up protein bar. how funny that this recipe was posted only two days after last year’s national cereal day! oh well, close enough.

i think the most unique submission i received was jana’s use of one of my FAVORITE cereals, shredded spoonfuls. she threw it into her food processor and made cereal protein pancakes! clever girl.

and if boxed cereal isn’t you thing, you can always make your own! check out a few fun versions:
- paige’s raw paleo cereal
- the pure2raw twin’s socca cereal
- kasey’s rice cake cereal
OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS. i just can’t shut up about cereal! this post has become waaaay longer than i anticipated.
i need to stop talking and go find a spoon.
Qs~
1. have you ever broken a bone? tell me the story behind it!
2. what was your favorite childhood cereal? and your favorite one now?

My childhood favorites were cocoa pebbles, cocoa puffs, Kix, rice krispie treats cereal, quaker oat squares, honey comb, and honestly a ton more. The only cereal I hated was lucky charms. Blegh.
Now? I mean, I still love all of those cereals but I refrain from eating them most of the time because I can do without the refined sugar. I’m a huge Kashi fan now – 9 times out of 10, if I buy cereal, it’s something from Kashi.
Hey I wasn’t big on lucky charms, either! Ick.
I have never broken a bone (and dang, I don’t want to jinx it now!). I have a ton of scars all over the place from stupid things like falling off a bike or ramming my shin into a display bed at Crate and Barrel… just to name a few. I had to show my wannabe pro snowboarder husband your x-ray- CRAZY! I do like the shark story though.
And you need to NOT post photos of cereal for me to see at 9 pm. Now it’s all I want (and all of those recipes- man, people are creative!). I was obsessed with Cookie Crisp in college, because our dining hall had it. My favorite cereal as a kid was “Ohs” (anyone remember those?) but now it would probably be the Barbara’s Bakery version of “Life” or peanut butter Puffins. Both rarely make an appearance in my pantry because I have no self-control with cereal. :)
My all time fav cereal is Golden Grahams!
i had pb cheerios today!!!
March 7th is my cousin’s birthday and I totally remember the day he was born because I was in 5th grade and it was day that we watched the $ex ed videos in school. That was a big day for a 5th grader!
best memory ever! hahaha
i adoooore this post. i LOVE cereal. i think my favorite when i was little was probably Life or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. my favorite now is Corn Chex.. so perfect for anytime. but i’d gladly take pretty much any cereal at any time. except fruity pebbles.. or trix. yuckkkk. clearly i prefer straight up sugar.
I am weird but I was not huge into cereal until recently. As a kid, I only LOVED Kix, Cheerios, and rice krispies. I don’t like sweet stuff! And I hate sog! No soggy cereal for me.
Now, I love cereal on top of yogurt. It doesn’t get as soggy that way. I’m all over rice chex lately. So good.
Ew soggy is no bueno. agreed!
Woah you are hard core!!
I have never broken a bone…however i do love cereal.
Current favorite is Peanut Butter Puffins.
Childhood favorite (sort of wish i had some right now) Honey Bunches of Oats
Oh my gosh that x-ray is terrifying. As a lover of scars, I think yours is amazing. Anyway, I’ve been obsessed with many cereals over time… Cinnamon Life and Honey Bunches of Oats are all time favorites. I could eat infinity of either of those!
I have never broken a bone! I have to say, I would totally believe someone if they told me their big scar was from a shark bite. I guess I’m gullible :-)
I had no idea it was cereal day!!! My family is full of cereal eaters. We usually had at least 10 different kinds while I was growing up. My favorites as a kid were cheerios, frosted flakes, and lucky charms. No fruity cereals for me, although Trix are okay if they’re dry.
Now I love those, plus multigrain cheerios, most Kashi cereals (especially strawberry fields) and I LOOOOVE quaker oatmeal squares. I cannot keep those in my home. They are gone within 24 hours.
OMG!!!! Colin even leaned over and was like “WOAH!!” who’s arm is that?? I am so sorry that happened to you. I can’t even imagine. KNock on wood I’ve never broken a bone.
I am so happy your arm is well today. I have surgery scars myself but nothing near that extent. If it means anything I’ve never noticed it and if I did I’d think you were cool :D
then: frosted flakes, honey bunches of oats
now: same — but for nutrition’s sake, i stick to kashi go lean!
Your ramblings suck me in every time!! I think even if I didn’t love you so much I would STILL be sucked in :-)
Today would have been my mon and dad’s 69th wedding anniversary….miss them so much….mom would have loved you and this awesome blog!!
I so remember that day 5 years ago like it was yesterday. You have healed up miraculously!
Frosted Flakes…hands down!
I love you.
xo
And you shaved my legs while I was broken! Love.
Can I just say that I adore your mother-daughter relationship and hope I have that experience with my little girl later! BTW, Momma B, you have raised one of the sweetest people ever! I don’t have a blog and so it’s hard to get to know me but somehow Janetha managed to and I cherish our newfound friendship. She definitely encourages me to comment more on sites because of her feedback to commenters. ;) I hope you both have a wonderful Thursday!
Good luck this Friday, Janetha. Still praying. ;)
i broke my neck when i was 8. that wasn’t fun.
oh, and cinnamon toast crunch is the best.
Oh no, how?!
So embarrassing. I was at my older brother’s baseball game, and since the bugs were biting me I put my arms and legs inside my shirt like a little ball. Then I rolled forward off the bench onto my face…
Haha that is actually a great story!
That scar is AWESOME…badass :) I’ve never broken a bone before thank goodness, and hope I never do!
Celebrating right this second…with some Cinnamon Puffins and P.B. Cheerios..mixed together. def. going back for seconds.
I have never broken a bone, which is surprising because I’m very clumsy. I’m always bumping into stuff or getting random bruises…guess I need to be more careful!
When I was a kid, I always loved Alpha Bits or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. These days my favorites are Honey Bunches of Oats or Kashi Golean.
I like your random posts!
I remember reading your blog for the first time and seeing that picture and thinking, “what a badass!” ha! Yea, I broke my stupid foot that still hurts…Breaking bones sucks! I think it only gets irritated every once in awhile since I’m on my feet a lot at work, but I cannot WAIT to be running again! It’s been almost a year.
I loved trix, fruity pebbles, frosted flakes, cinnamon toast crunch…you know, the usual sugar-filled kid cereals! :)
Ive shattered my thumb and my nose.. Both were softball related, both happened warm up before the first game AT THEM SAME TOUR AMENT 3 years apart.. my nose was literally flat on my face.. And it damaged my nerves so that now when I do lots of cardio, my front teeth hurt.. That’s what I don’t like cardio ;)
I looooooved cinnamon toast crunch now I’d have to say Barbara’s peanut butter puffins ! Yum. I wish I had cereal in the house tonight!
You probs like that one since it has the name Barbara in it! ;)
freakin’ LOVE cereal. i eat at least three bowls a day. not kidding. sometimes more. except for tomorrow…because i’m out of cereal. it’s going to be a sad morning.
Yikes! That is one crazy X-ray!
I’ve never broken a bone (knock on wood), but I have had two stress fractures at the same time. I had one fracture in each hip last spring, which was a total bummer cuz I couldn’t run for 5 months.
man, i remember you posting about your March 7th crash last year. WHERE does time go? But you know what? Bloggers “chicks” dig scars. So we dig you!
and those cereal recipes are MAD! Thats what my NEW ZEALAND mother in law calls someone or something that is so ridiculously awesome. New word for us to use, right?
;-)
Hey, I like that!
i could talk about and/or read about cereal all day long!!! thanks, j!!!
and yes, you must combine cereals. four is the optimum number in bowl.
i can’t sleep unless i have cereal before bed!!
I am in love with your pictures. They are beautiful.
I love cereal so much but try to limit myself or I will go crazy. I fell in love with mixing cereals too!! I can’t wait to look up the protein one, it looks delicious! (Honey bunches is BY FAR MY FAVORITE cereal… it’s dangerous!!!)
Love the spoon…. and all these “bars” look amazing. So glad I came across your blog.
Much love <3 fooood4theheart <3
Thank you!
wow!!!! you are even more amazing :) you are our hero!
and ya for all the cereal love and love love all your spoons, too cute. thanks for the link love xoxo
HUGS
L&M
Ohhh THAT is what the scar is from!!! Dang girl. I’m a major fan of cereal and really need to make the cinnamon toast crunch again… Also, I have a big scar on my leg and have told people before that I fell through a glass door….they always believe it, haha. So not true. Shark attack is more hardcore!
Ok I think you may have become my new favorite blogger based on this post alone. I LOVE cereal. My absolute favorite food, hands down. I eat about 4 bowls for breakfast every morning. I have rarely met a cereal I didn’t love. I feel like all food bloggers are all about the oatmeal. And while I eat it sometimes, cereal has my heart and I always go running back (within hours usually)! My current favorites are shredded wheat, PB cheeris, and raisin bran. I couldnt eat cereal at all while pregnant because I had gestational diabetes and cereal (even the low carb nasty kind) sent my blood sugar through the roof. You know that was my first meal after delivery! Ok now I sound like a freak of nature, but this is how much I love cereal.
YES! i love you. you are not a freak. and if you are, then I am too. :)
Holy crap, you got bit by a shark?!
:)
I need to mix up some more of that cinnamon toast crunch…it’s been too long and it’s always been my fave. Oh, and Golden Grahams. LOVE those.
and you are cuckoo for cocoa puffs.. right? ;)
Thankfully I’ve had no broken bones, only a sprained ankle.
My favorite cereals growing up were Fruity Pebbles, Cheerios, anything chocolately. Really, I loved it all!
Lately I’ve been loving shredded wheat, anything Kashi, PB Cheerio’s and PB Puffins.
I could live off of cereal!
I am a cereal addict too! I had to break my 1 box of puffins per week habit. I was eating too many handfuls randomly throughout the day, plus all my regular meals. Not ok.
When I was a kid we weren’t allowed to eat “sugar cereals”. Now I much prefer the non-sugar cereals, but back then I was dying for a big bowl of lucky charms or fruit loops! So… with that said, my favorite cereal was probably Kix. Now, I’m totally addicted to pb puffins and mom’s best’s version of cinn toast crunch.
I am part robot too! I definitely posted a picture of my hardware once on the blog. So cool! It’s there bc the tiny bones in my spine between L4 & L5 were not fused. I found out about it after getting rear ended on the freeway while not sitting with my back flat on the seat back, but instead turned to the left talking to B who was driving. The doc’s thought it happened before birth or I did it back in my gymnastics days as a kiddo.
I think I remember you telling me that! Yay for robots. haha. glad to see you blogging again, BTW :)
ME TOO! Yesterday I posted my first real post since Sept (lots of medical stuff happened & is still going on, but I’m well enough now to blog). I was ‘only the photog’ and I totally loved just having to worry about the pictures. It was so nice having two more hands to help me get the money shots. Her kitchen has a bunch of natural light too… I was in heaven.
I love ALL cereal! Right now current faves are Quaker Oatmeal Squares, PB Cheerios, Kashi, and Special K Protein Plus.
Growing up, we had all the sugary ones and I’d say it was probably a toss up between Lucky Charms (which I still love), Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Corn Pops. Aaaaand now when I’m about to go to bed, all I want to do is eat a big ‘ol bowl of cereal.
Never broken a bone (knock on wood) and THANK YOU for the cookie master title. I am honored! ;)
I love cereal so much. Have you ever tried Special K protein plus? It has 10 grams of protein and 100 calories per serving. I like it better than Kashi Go Lean (which I have to mix with other cereals cuz it gets boring.)
My fave growing up was definitely Fruity Pebbles…
I have seen it before but I think it had some crazy ingredients so I didn’t buy it? i am not sure if that was the one. Oh yeah.. FP for the win! Yabba dabba doooo!
Ahh! I’ve read about your arm accident several times and still flinch when I read it and see the x-ray. Ouch! No broken bones yet because I’m such a scaredy cat and used to suck at sports or anything physical growing up.
Hmm, we could only eat regular Cheerios growing up, but one of my favs now is the Reese’s PB cereal. I haven’t had it for years since we cleaned up our diet. I really love any type of granila nowadays. ;)
BTW, how have you been feeling?
I love regular cheerios, actually! Okay, I love it all. Haha. I feel okay–I got an appt with a specialist on Mar 30 and am seeing a naturopath friday. Exciting! Thanks for asking, love ya!
My favorite childhood cereal is cinnamon toast crunch – I’ve had that mama pea recipe star FOREVER. I need to make them.
Now I love puffins, quaker oatmeal squares, and uncle sams. And I’ve been looking for those damn PB cheerios everywhere!
I have a big scare on my left arm too. I broke my elbow when I was five.
How did you break it?! Bet that was traumatic as such a young kiddo.
Hi,
Love cereal too!
I recently broke my ankle while trail running 5 months ago, and like you, I am part robot too! A rod and six pins, plus a cool scar. My bolts are coming off in October, and I can’t wait as they hurt a bit while I sleep on my right side. Being on crutches for 2 months was the worst, or maybe it was the weight gain. Anyhow, I’m back to running and exercising and it feels great!
Karen all the way from Taiwan
Ps: love your blog!
Wow, Taiwan! That’s rad. Thanks for reading, and thanks for sharing your robot story!
I thoroughly cracked and splintered my radius-the amount of pins and plates in what I like to call my bionic arm rivals yours:) unfortunately compared to the brain trauma I incurred in the fall, the arm was the least of the doctor’s worries…but now I’m completely better from both:)
As for cereal. Love it. Bran flakes, wheatabix, almond milk, cottage cheese and cinnamon is my favorite mix.
Congrats on getting through your injury. Those x-rays are brutal!
wow girl, that was quite the break! my husband broke his neck, yes his NECK, almost two years ago while he was snowboarding. needless to say, i kinda freak out every time he goes to the slopes now.
my favorite childhood cereals were cinnamon toast crunch, LIFE, and cap’n crunch. they’re still my top favorites! i have very very little self control when it comes to cereal!
great roundup of treats and those PB cheerios rock!
5 years…so glad you healed from the horrible accident and wow, it must seem surreal to you thinking back!
I’ve broken two bones and nearly smashed in my rib cage. The worst was probly the ribcage. Got knocked out cold by my horse who got spooked. He kicked me right smack dab in the middle of my chest. Luckily nothing got broken…just horribly bruised! The other times I broke my arm roller blading and my leg while playing field hockey. Poor bones…at least they are all healed now.
No broken bones! I’m a lazy couch potato. ;) (that x-ray makes me cringe every time I see it! must have been so painful!)
Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch was my absolute favorite cereal growing up. Now, my favorite is Cinnamon Chex because they’re gluten-free and still feel like “real” cereal!
Holy arm!!!!! That is crazy lady. I don’t even know what to say.
Cereal…. I don’t eat that much of it, but love the idea of putting together a little protein milk. Favorite as a kid was Life and at some point there was this cereal that had fruit in the middle that I loved. I can’t remember the name for the life of me. :)
I was a Froot Loops girl all the way! Although I did like to steal my Mom’s fancy Quaker Harvest Crunch and I have fond memories of something called Crispy Wheats and Raisins which I’ve never found as an adult.
Now I’m a Kashi Honey Almond girl.
Do you still like Fruity Pebbles? I was really surprised and disappointed that I don’t like Froot Loops anymore!!
ah that first picture gives me the heebie jeebies!! I have never broken a bone (or sprained, strained or pulled anything) and it looks sooo painful!
Don’t hate me but cereal isn’t really my thing. UNLESS we’re talking about peanut butter puffins!
MAN it is amazing how fast and slooooooow 5 can go.
xoxoxo
wow that is a gnarly picture all right! wowsers! I shivered just looking at it. Glad you were ale to heal and scars are cool in my book – god knows I have plenty of those LOL
I had a 300 pound man step on my hand after falling in a club and broke 4 bones – thanks god it was my left hand. It felt horrible but it healed fine!
xoxo from Trinidad
Love Cheerios and pretty much any kind of cerial that is not too sweet. I broke my arm as a kid. My brother and I were riding a horse and he fell off and took me with him. Brother-no injuries, me broken arm. I hold it against him to this day.
When I was 12, I broke the exact same bone as you did when I fell off a horse, but my break was on the right arm. My bone didn’t shift outwards like yours did in the x-ray so I just need a full arm cast (hand to shoulder) for a 1 1/2 months. It sucked. I still have this gnarly bump leftover from a calcium deposit, which my husband thinks is the weirdest thing ever. It’s super hard, but it has gotten a bit smaller over the years.
I’m a cereal fiend too which is why I can’t keep it in the house. I don’t savor it, I eat it all up in a matter of days.
I broke my little toe right in the middle of my fiance and I getting ready to move. This was two summer’s ago. It happened Memorial Day weekend in our apartment. I was rushing around trying to get things together and wasn’t paying attention and slammed my toe into the corner of the wall. It was awful. I spent the entire summer not being able to walk or wear any cute shoes. It was torture!
I love cereal! My favorite cereal growing up was Lucky Charms. Now I like Peanut Butter Cheerios and Kashi Go Lean Berry Crisp :)
I am so glad I’m not the only 28 year old cereal fanatic running around. I love cereal. A few months ago, my brother and I were able to have an entire conversation about types, flavors, the correct milk/cereal ratio, and how quickly certain cereals must be eaten to not get soggy (hello, Life, I’m talking to you) Also, when the new Honey Bunches of Oats with Pecan Bunches came out…. I may have eaten a box a day….. for… awhile… It’s so freaking delicious. Okay, I’m gonna go now and stop being a crazy cereal stalker on your wall.
1. That is a bad-ass scar, Janetha. And a bad-ass way to break your arm. You’re one tough mutha.
2. I broke my ankle when I was 13. I was rollerskating on a pair of those old school skates that you put on over your shoes, and one was missing a bolt that held it together. I went over a crack, the skate fell apart, and my ankle went boom.
3. I totally bought a box of generic Fruity Pebbles on Sunday and have been trying SO HARD to limit myself on them. But they’re so good. :(
