you guys know i am slightly obsessed with national food holidays. i am not sure why i am so intrigued by them, but i am—so why fight it?
in addition to daily national food holidays, there are also weekly and monthly ones.
september is a lot of things:
- national honey month
- national chicken month
- national biscuit month
- national mushroom month
- national potato month
- national papaya month
september is also better breakfast month.
i eat breakfast every day. i look forward to it and rarely have gone without it.
as a kid, my mom made me and my siblings breakfast before school every day. we would rotate between french toast, wheat pancakes, cocoa and toast (my personal fave—just toast with butter dunked in cocoa made with milk and nestle quik), eggs mayonnaise toast (which is exactly what it sounds like, and you better believe the scrambled eggs were made in the microwave) and, on special mornings when there was more time, she’d make german pancakes. even in high school, i would always eat something for breakfast… usually cereal, but sometimes cocoa and toast if i wasn’t super late already.
fast forward to today. i love breakfast food! over easy eggs, french toast, omelets, waffles, breakfast burritos.. it’s all so delicious. breakfast for dinner should happen more often. my favorite meal when dining out is breakfast. even if it is 4 o’clock in the afternoon, i would prefer to go to an all-day breakfast joint. the only problem is deciding if i want something sweet or something savory. i LOVE breakfast foods.
a couple of the breakfasts i ALWAYS see on blogs are oatmeal and pancakes. those two seem to be the most prominent and, while there is nothing wrong with eating oatmeal and pancakes (i eat both all the time!), it gets a little boring to see the same thing after awhile. that’s the main reason i stopped blogging ALL my meals—breakfasts were always the same! bo-ring.
oh, hey, let’s take a time out to talk about oatmeal—also known as THE blogger breakfast. it seems like the very most common breakfast among bloggers is oatmeal. overnight oats, oats in a jar, oatmeal breakfast cookie, oatmeal everywhere—invading my google reader! what’s the latest and greatest oat concoction today?!
i actually was grossed out by oatmeal as a kid and refused to eat it. i know—ridiculous! i missed out on a quarter-century of delicious oatmeal! no idea why i never tried it previously—probably because i wasn’t exposed to it. we never were an oatmeal-eating household and i don’t remember my mom making it for us once. (of course, my sisters may sing a different tune, because every time i bring up a childhood memory.. they have a different one. however, they were 6 and 8 years older than me, so maybe momma b was just over oatmeal by the time i came along. who knows.) i wouldn’t even eat an oatmeal cookie! although, that probably had something to do with the raisins.. which i hated up until about two years ago. anyway! i first tried oatmeal when i started body for life in 2008 and it was protein oatmeal. 1/3 cup oats, 1 scoop of protein powder, water and a dollop of peanut butter. that was it. i didn’t even try regular oatmeal (without the protein powder) until a year or so after finishing body for life. that’s when i started blogging and seeing all these oatmeal concoctions on blogs—a big bowl of oats topped with bananas, granola, peanut butter, blueberries, last night’s leftovers, your neighbor’s cat—you get the idea. i started doing that and it led to some serious weight gain. i did a calorie check and realized my bowls of oatmeal were clocking in upwards of 600 calories! plus, this was when i was eating every three hours, six times a day. no wonder i gained weight. once i made this realization, i scaled back and when i did enjoy oatmeal it was in the simple form of protein oats, which i still enjoy today.
that’s my spill on oatmeal. i know it came out of nowhere, but this is a breakfast post.. when in rome? something like that.
okay, back to september being better breakfast month! at the beginning of the month, i pondered what a “better breakfast” meant to me. for a breakfast to be good (or better) it needs a few things:
- high in protein (which in turn is satiating for me)
- free from tons of added sugar
- not too complicated to whip up in the morning
- tasty
those guidelines aren’t too strict!
so.. almost every day in the summer, i had a protein shake for breakfast. it is safe to say that i had a protein shake on 75% of the mornings in july and august.
while my protein shakes were always packed with protein, nutritionally sound, quick to make and delicious.. there was one problem: i was lacking variety. when september rolled around and i was thinking about what makes a better breakfast, i realized that it is important to switch it up from day to day! sure, eating the same foods day in and day out might be okay with our taste buds (i get it—you like what you like!), but our bodies crave variety. switching up our meals is just as important as switching up our workouts! it is best to eat a wide variety of foods so we consume a wide variety of nutrients.
so, this month, i have challenged myself to eat better breakfasts—meaning lots of different breakfasts. some are old, some are new—but i have made a conscious effort to not have the same breakfast two days in a row.
i had big plans to announce this whole better breakfast thing at the beginning of the month, but then i blinked and it was september 20th. weird.
i have been doing the challenge on my own, and here are six different breakfasts i have enjoyed this month.
protein shakes.
i know! i just got done telling you how i had way too many shakes this summer! but you can’t expect me to give them up completely, right? i have only had a shake for breakfast twice this month.. i have tried to wean myself off of them in the mornings because they are so tasty. but, a challenge is a challenge so i have started my mornings off with different things and i have made a shake for meal 5/dessert a few nights instead.
ALL of my protein shakes have the same components:
- 1 cup of almond milk
- 1 cup of ice
- 1 scoop of protein powder (favorites are olympian labs vanilla pea protein and teraswhey all flavors)
- 1 or 2 types of fruit (fresh or frozen)—a serving of each
- xanthan & guar gums (thickening agents)
- flax, cereal or granola sprinkled on top
i always switch up my flavors of protein shakes because the possibilities are endless. my favorite flavors are peach raspberry and chocolate banana.
scrambled egg whites + fruit.
every monday, i have a sales meeting meal at the original pancake house. i usually order oatmeal and egg whites, so i opted for fruit and egg whites. not a huge change, but a change none the less.![]()
side note: i asked for TWO egg whites. pretty sure that is, like, seven. whatever.
make-it-yourself fruit on the bottom yogurt.
this is my FAVORITE new breakfast. i have had to make an effort NOT to eat it every day. i have had it three times so far this month—twice with peaches and once with a pear.
to make it, i simply dice a piece of fruit and put it in the bottom of a cup…
next, i mix a cup of plain nonfat greek yogurt with a hefty shake of cinnamon and a splash of vanilla/coconut/coffee/maple extract (or vanilla bean paste) and layer the yogurt over the fruit.
finally, i top the yogurt with a quarter cup of sunflower market’s european cereal.. which is basically old fashioned oats, rolled dates, raisins and slivered almonds. any muesli would be delicious here.
to seal the deal, i add a splash of milk.
this is just as portable as my protein shakes and i take it on the road to eat once i get to work. it’s awesome for mornings when i am short on time. it could even be made the night before (aside from the milk—it’d be too soggy) and then grab & go in the morning.
omelet with potatoes.
when dining out, i usually sub fruit for potatoes.. but let’s face it: potatoes are delicious. AND it’s national potato month. when i was at the eating establishment over the weekend, i ordered an omelet and potatoes even though my typical go-to brunch order is over-easy eggs, toast and fruit.
the potatoes were a very good idea! i also opted to keep the cheese in my omelet (i usually skip it) and i had never tried an omelet with sprouts—amazing. three cheers for a new and better breakfast!
peach protein muffins.
who said muffins couldn’t be a filling, nutritious breakfast?
protein oatmeal.
yep, it made a comeback for better breakfast month. i can honestly say i have missed my protein oatmeal over the summer.
i have had protein oatmeal a couple times this month and remember why i don’t have it all that often: it takes some time to prepare and i am not a morning person.
i make my protein oats on the stovetop. i combine 1/3 cup slow cooking oats with a cup of water, bring it to a boil and then turn it down to a simmer. once almost all of the water is absorbed, i stir in a scoop of protein powder. i always use vanilla and i have found the best protein powders for protein oatmeal are those that are a blend of whey, soy and casein. my favorite is EAS premium protein, but sytha6 makes a delicious vanilla protein powder that mixed well into oatmeal. that is the one marshall uses every morning.
once i add the protein powder, i turn off the heat and stir the oatmeal vigorously until all the powder is absorbed. i then transfer it to a bowl and top it with a tablespoon of peanut butter. i typically don’t top my protein oatmeal with flax, but for the sake of better breakfast month, i did add some this week.

you might be trying to incorporate more protein or fiber into your day, or reduce the amount of added sugar you consume.. well, build a better breakfast and send it in.
or.. maybe you don’t eat breakfast at all and just eating breakfast PERIOD is a better breakfast for you!
we are all different and so our interpretation of a better breakfast is going to vary.
now for the fun part:
- think up your own better breakfast.
- make the breakfast, take a photo of the breakfast, then EAT the breakfast.

That’s funny, my dad use to make us cocoa and toast for breakfast at least once a week! I am addicted to scrambled eggs in the morning. When I was pregnant and had gestational diabetes I had to be careful with my carb consumption. I would have 1 egg and 3 egg whites for breakfast every morning to keep my blood sugar levels stable. I did that for 4 months straight so needless to say, I was excited after baby to have something different for breakfast. I love oatmeal and have always eaten it plain. Whenever I see blogs with oatmeal all I can think about is how many calories are in each bowl so I like to keep it simple! Breakfast is my favorite meal, so this was such a fun post to read!
GET OUT OF TOWN. i love that you had cocoa and toast!!!!!
What a fun challenge! During the week we either ate oatmeal or eggs and toast growing up. If we were lucky, we got pancakes on the weekends!
I am not an oatmeal fan. Though once in a blue moon, I do crave it for breakfast. Now, I’m still a HUGE fan of eggs, and I eat them almost every day. That or a protein shake + apple.
Such a great idea, Janetha! Love it…I am looking forward to participating in this challenge not only because the prize pack ROCKS (nice work) but because I, too, love breakfasts and need some variety. I would choose a breakfast joint any time of day as well, and when I’m out I can never choose between sweet and savory but at home I cannot do savory for breakfast! My goal is to get some veggies in the a.m. Even eggs – it’s like I have to be in the right mood for them! So I’m excited about this.
We always ate breakfast growing up…often sausage patties and hashbrowns from the toaster. ;) It’s funny how even my family got healthier as we aged too! All yogurt bowls and fresh fruit now. But every Saturday we had Swedish pancakes made by my mom – maybe they’re the same as German pancakes? – thin crepe-like pancakes you can roll up. Such good memories!
I love Swedish pancakes. German are a little different. More eggy and fluffy:

Sometimes called a Dutch Baby!
We totally had oatmeal! Made on the stovetop since we didn’t have a microwave. We’d either put loads of brown sugar with milk on it or honey with the cute honey dipper thing. I can’t believe you don’t remember that. It was a winter breakfast, after which Dad would say his line, “Wake me at 8!” BTW, scrambled eggs were stovetop for me, too. Obviously, I’m the oldest.
i don’t remember any honey dipper! i bet it would be great for the blog….
Challenge accepted! I love breakfast foods too!
To be honest, I dislike oatmeal. I don’t know why but I haven’t had any desire to eat it in a few years.
My childhood breakfast was usually a Toaster Strudle, or toast with Nutella. Or on the weekends, cereal. These days, I love yogurt bowls (I tried full-fat Fage and I can’t go back to 0%!) with fruit and Erewhon’s rice crispies (virtually sugar free and very crunchy). I also am obsessed with this chicken gouda apple sausage I found at Costco’s. It’s not heavy at all but soooo yummy in the mroning. And I can prepare them in the microwave!
i love breakfast! i really enjoyed reading about your childhood breakfasts. i disliked oatmeal as a kid, too. and oatmeal raisin cookies – still don’t like raisins, to this day.
my fave breakfast as a kid was a bowl of cereal. my mom only bought healthy types, so on vacation when we got corn pops or alpha-bitz, it was a big treat. i still adore cereal today, as you know!!
great giveaway idea! love that bowl!
and good for you for doing your breakfast challenge for september.
What a great idea!!! I have been stuck on smoothiea too. My favorite breakfast as a child? Either captain crunch (my mom wouldnt buy it due to the sugar) or cinnamon raisin toast
I love this idea!! I am always so stuck on cereal or yogurt bowls but I’ve been wanting to branch out in the morning. I am definitely going to do this! :)
The one meal that I really look forward to each day is breakfast — I love breakfast foods so this challenge is a really good idea to me!
I usually rotate between smoothies, oatmeal w/almond milk, pb and banana or eggs/toast/avocado.
I seriously don’t know how people do NOT eat breakfast. It is my favorite meal of the day!!! Right now I’m loving pumpkin oatmeal. And no breakfast is cmplete without peanut butter. #fact
What a fun challenge! My favorite breakfast lately has been chia pudding (sets overnight) poured over a banana and topped with peanut butter + raisins. It’s also a great pre-run meal!
You are always coming up with the most creative things! I love you!
I always have breakfast! If not, WATCH OUT! lol
Mike never ate breakfast before he met me, now he does because of me , and he can’t go without it! I also got him to drink coffee and he is hooked now, I pretty much corrupted my husband ; ) and still do!
Love you!
love this idea. I’ll be snapping my breakfast this morning because I finally stepped away from oats like I have every single morning. I love the idea of the portable make it yourself fruit on the bottom too.
hahahaha I can’t wait to show you my better breakfast – it may or may not consist of one of your meals Re-done :P lol j/k I’ll try harder this time. I have yet to make those yummy looking peach muffins and peach season is over :( I think a batch of those should be included in the prize pack :D lol
I LOVE your layered yogurt idea looks easy to do and delicious.
So glad I came across this today, because I have a NEW, BETTER breakfast all set to go this morning! I’ll send a pic over soon and tell you what it is!
ps – hope you like the apple muffins! There’s also a peach version which I did for Clean Eating Magazine :) http://www.cleaneatingmag.com/Recipes/Recipe/Peach-Streusel-Cupcakes.aspx
thanks for the link to the peach ones!
Always up for a challange! I love the protein oatmeal, and love that you can customize your ingredients according to the seasons. Pumpkin in the fall, peppermint/cocoa in the winter, berries in the spring, and cantelope or peach in the summer!
Off to breakfast!!
This is a great idea! I love breakfast. I think my favorite growing up was definitely pancakes. Yum! Now, my favorite breakfast is cereal. There is nothing like a big bowl of cereal with soy milk :)
EXCITED…cuz Imma win!
And I love that Power Crunch! Just picked some up last week and it’s almost gone.
i am seriously entering this JUST to win that cute mini spoon. if you gave all the other stuff to someone else, i’d totally be okay with it. i <3 those little guys! the bowl is adorable, too!
I agree that it’s easy to over do the calories with oatmeal! Once I started using all the great add-in ideas I found in the blog world, I had to temporarily “break up” with oatmeal – my breakfasts were close to 500 calories!
This is funnn!!! I’ve been eating the same thing every single day since I stared chemo – two pieces of toast with cream cheese and a fried egg on top of each. I love it because it’s super quick and filling (and doesn’t make me want to puke), but I am DEFINITELY in need of some variety. Now the wheels are churning about what a better breakfast would look like for me…
Oh, and growing up, I had a bowl of Just Right cereal every morning for breakfast, no matter how much I begged my parents to buy French Toast Crunch.
Great idea! Ever since I saw pumpkin in the stores, I’ve been eating your three ingredient pumpkin protein pancakes. They’re so easy, delish, and they keep me full for hours! I love them so much, but I’m definitely in a rut…I’ll have to come up with something unique for this, though… What a fun challenge!
love this idea! and i’m so sad i didn’t take a picture of my breakfast today :)
i haven’t done very well on breakfasts since we moved into this house. with our longer commute, i now usually eat in the car on the way to work – not the best way for me to start the day!
i’ll try to remember to take a picture of my new favorite and send it :)
My favorite breakfast growing up (and well into my 20’s) was eggs benedict, I always ordered it at a restaurant. I was an odd child. LOL
Now my fave breakfast is either protein oats (I make mine just like you) or Kodiak pancakes.
Such a different giveaway, I like it! And thank you for the breakfast ideas ;-)
As a kid I loved the old standby, cheerios or rice krispies with banana.
Now, I love…Cheerios or Chex! Haha. When I’m not in the cereal mood, I go for a quick egg and cheese sandwich.
What a great post! It was very inspirational to me – it made me realize that i’m stuck in a bfast rut. I accept the challenge and will eat something different for the remainin 9 days of the month. :-) Your fruit/yogurt/cereal parfait looks delicious, I think I will start with that.
Oh my gawd! This is too cool! :-D I love this post so much, and I am DOWN with that prize – it’s awesome! (As are you) ;-)
Breakfast is my most favourite-est meal of the day, (and to be fair I often eat breakfast foods for more than one meal of the day, lol!) and I love love love your better breakfasts – they inspire me!
Thank you x a million for this fun post…I’d best get planning my better breakfast, eh?! :-P xyx
My breakfast always stays the same and I am usually okay with that…I love anything mixed in with Oatmeal or Oatbran. I am not a huge eggs/bacon/toast type person, and I can’t just have a shake. Great idea on the better breakfast option idea!!
Breakfast is my favorite. I don’t know how people skip it – I would be a hungry monster if I went without. Also…I think you should bring back YOATS! :-)
My favorite childhood breakfast was my Mom’s homage biscuits with either tomato gravy or chocolate gravy, grits (butter, salt and loads of pepper) and scrambled eggs. Also loved cinnamon toast!
Mine now? Well I’m a bad egg (pardon the pun) but I don’t eat breakfast – I eat later in the day and will sometimes still have “brinner” consisting of scrambled egg whites with lowfat cheese and grits. (ya know, gotta have those – G.R.I.T.S – Girls Raised In The South!!)
Sorry, I have to comment…chocolate gravy?? that sounds amazing! :)
Ha ha! I guess it’s a southern thing (that and tomato gravy too) as so many people seemed to have never heard of it. Basically it’s chocolate sauce, but we called it gravy. I dont have the recipe she used but this one is much like it. But I’d never use Splenda as a substitute!
http://www.food.com/recipe/moms-chocolate-gravy-142524
Blog about it if you make it ;)
It can be used on pancakes too (just sayin – since Monday IS National Pancake Day…
I love this challenge, and I definitely want to participate. My favorites have remained the same pancakes and cereal. The ingredients just look very different now : )
You see…this is why I read your blog, Janetha…who woulda thunk there were so many food holidays? :)
I am super excited about your breakfast challenge…I eat the same old boring thing every workday morning…time to change it up! Maybe i’ll win that adorable breakfast set, maybe not, but the true win for me will be adding some breakfast excitement to my life…
My fave breakfast as a kid was my Mom’s pancakes…she made ’em just right! Now my favorite breakfast is eggs benedict, but unfortunately it’s too unhealthy to have more than once in awhile…good times…
love the protein oats btw…gotta try that! :)
Cheers,
Christin
Love this! Totally submitting an entry tomorrow morning :D
This is the best contest idea I have ever heard! Breakfast has always been my all time favorite meal. I can probably count on one hand the numbers of days I have skipped breakfast. Some favorites growing up were chocolate chip pancakes and cream of wheat. On a random tangent… I hated smoothies until recently. My dad used to make one every morning for my brother and I… but he would add flax oil and it gave them this weird aftertaste. Now I love flax oil free smoothies.
My favorite childhood breakfast was definitely pineapple pancakes! My mom and I always made them together on the weekends. :)
My current favorite breakfast is some form of oats. Whether is is protein oats, overnight oats, or a breakfast cookie. I love them all!
How fun!! I am sending my submission now!! I loved eggs (and still do) for breakie :)
I’m running out of work, but wanted to leave a comment to agree with you about breakfast being my favorite meal of the day. No matter what time we hit a diner during a road trip I don’t even have to look at the menu. I know I’m getting an egg white veggie omelet with wheat toast & a side of potatoes. Love!
Growing up my favorite breakfast was pancakes. My mom made sure to make them for my birthday every year. I still love pancakes now, but I’m sure to add some form of protein into the mix. Either I throw protein powder into the batter or I add a side of egg whites to complete the meal.
Be back later to take in your breakfast ideas!
1. Favorite childhood breakfast was either Cocoa Pebbles (I know, I know), Peanut Butter Crunch (I know, I know), or my Dad’s scrambled eggs (on the stove top) with garlic powder, pepper, and hot sauce. :-)
2. My current favorite breakfast is my egg, Canadian bacon, and Pepper Jack cheese on an English muffin, with or without a pile of greens. :-)
don’t i know i know to those cereals! those are two of my favorites and i ate them as after school snacks more than breakfast. i was more into fruity pebbles than cocoa ones, but i am not picky!
Hello! It’s funny because in High School I hated cereal…I always had to have bread something! I’m glad I grew out of that. Now I have Kashi cereal or oatmeal. On the weekends it’s usually an egg creation of some type.
Love your blog! I’m in Utah and couple of weeks ago I was at Carlucci’s Bakery with a friend and saw this man who looked very familiar to me! Then I realized it was your husband! It was like seeing a celebrity I had to explain to my friend how I recognized him!
you’re in utah?! yaaaay utah bloggers! and i wonder when he was at carluccis without me. that’s so weird! i wonder if i was over at the fish market or something. off to check your blog!
as a kid i would either sleep in and skip breakfast, eat pop tarts or toaster strudel or jimmy dean egg sandwiches from the freezer (my mom never got up with us in the morning). this morning, i ate pickled beets, a hard boiled egg, some olives and roasted red pepper hummus on raw zuke coins. i eat very random breakfasts!
LOVE your “portable parfait”/DIY fruit on the bottom yogurt. I have the same cup, so I am totally stealing that idea.
How do you choose which protein powders to use? Is whey the best, etc? It gets so confusing, just like choosing a healthy protein bar!
Also, I have been doing Quaker natural oats for my oatmeal, is that much different then slow cooking oats? (It’s just so much easier to heat in the micro for 2-3 min! I’m lazy…)
Whey is no better than other protein powders. It’s all about what you prefer. I like ones that aren’t full of lots of ingredients that I can’t pronounce, although some of those taste good, too. I like tera’s whey and olympian labs pea protein.
oh and for the oats–slow cooking oats digest slower in your body and keep you full longer. they really are worth the time!
As a kid, we had eggs and bacon or cereal (corn flakes or shredded wheat, no sugar in our house and we hated it LOL). Now, I have a green monster or some yogurt with granola.
I eat the exact same breakfast every day, and have done for years: 4-5 egg whites + 1 whole egg, and 50 grams of oats. Oh the joys of being a figure competitor… BUT I should say I don’t ever get sick of it – breakfast is my favourite meal of the day!
My favorite breakfast as a kid was cheese grits, eggs, and a biscuit with jam. Obvisouly I love carbs :)
My go-to now is oatmeal with banana and PB, never get sick of it!
We had cereal most days unless it was a special occasion. Mom always kept oatmeal in the house, but it was more of a weekend meal because we all disliked the texture of quick cook oats, and rolled oats take extra time to cook. I discovered steel cut oats in the last few years and these are by far my favorite. I make a big pot on the weekend and reheat during the week. It keeps it’s texture through reheating, and is so quick and tasty with a bit of molasses, nutmeg and milk. My son’s favorite is “gloopy-glopy oatmeal with mushy bananas” – extra ripe bananas and a sprinkle of cinnamon in the oatmeal make it so it doesn’t need any sweetener.
1. My favorite breakfast when I was little would have to be French toast. Mmmmmmm. Oh and the stuffed French toast? Totally there!
2. Right now, I’ve been pretty obsessed with eggs whites. That by far is my go to breakfast. Although it’s funny, this post came at the perfect time for me. I’ve been getting was sick of eggs in the morning, so I’ve been trying to switch it up!
You order 2 egg whites?? Wow, you really do eat very little!
Hahaha no! There’s no way I’d get full from TWO egg whites and fruit. When eating them at home, I have five. Five egg whites carries 30 grams of protein– I aim for at least 120 grams of protein daily so 2 egg whites would never fly. I ORDER 2 egg whites at The Original Pancake House because Tge eggs come out and it’s more like 7 whites– like I mentioned in the post. It’s actually an ongoing joke with our regular waitress because I order two and we laugh at how huge the pile of egg whites ends up being. When I mix in veggies to make a scramble, I’ll only tell them one and it’s still 4 or 5 plus veggies and cheese.
