hi! another monday bites the dust. hope you had a nice one–mine was just another monday at the office. i know lots of people had it off due to the holiday, but that actually just made our phones busier at work! everyone was at home and decided it would be a good time to call in about windows. can’t complain, though, it’s better than being slow!
after work i went to my weekly training meeting at GPP. i am working on learning all there is to know about being a trainer. now that i have learned all the basics, i am learning about anatomy and the different muscles and movements. today we learned about the three cardinal planes. i took an anatomy class back when i was in community college and the information came back to me a bit–but it’s still pretty fuzzy. should have paid more attention back then, aye?
after class it was time for the workout. it was AMRAP SSBT (sprints, shoulders, bis, tris) and i tried to ramp it up but ended up finishing with the same exact number of rounds as last time. oh well, better to match my previous record than to fall short! after GPP i headed to gold’s for some treadmill-walkin’ and shit-talkin’ with my lady friends. we attempted to do the body attack class but opted to chat instead. that was much needed on this monday.
i was really looking forward to dinner tonight: burrito bowls!

i had been craving one of these chicken burrito bowls since the last time we had them. to make the chicken (well, marshall made it) you put 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts in the slow cooker with a jar of trader joe’s salsa verde and 8 oz of tomato sauce. cook it on low for a few hours and then shred it before serving. seriously, this is the tastiest mexican chicken ever! and the easiest.. bonus.

while the rice was cooking for the burrito bowls, i had to run to the store to get a few essentials for dinner because the avocado i had was bad. you can’t have a burrito bowl without avocado, not allowed. i picked up a few other needed items while at the store (chobani, milk, apples) but OF COURSE i walked away with a few impulse buys. i am the impulse buy QUEEN.

although, today’s impulse escapade wasn’t too bad. coconut flour (because i’ve been wanting to make ANY of heather’s pancakes for ages and many of them call for it), chopped cauliflower because i am lazy, and salt & vinegar popchips since i was having a text conversation about them with my friends while i was at the store.
we were actually talking about those foods that are either all or nothing. you either LOVE them or LOATHE them.. there is no middle ground. i got to thinking about this topic after reading my comments from yesterday’s post--lots of you talked about how you despise black licorice and that it is one of those all or nothing foods.
i made a mental list of other foods that seem to be ones people either go bat shit crazy for or won’t touch with a ten foot pole. i brainstormed myself, read the comments from my post, and asked marshall and my friends to chime in on the subject. here’s the list i came up with!
(source)
black licorice. obviously this one is on the list because it is what brought this whole topic to my head to begin with! i personally love black licorice and anything licorice flavored. yep, you bet i was a BIG fan of jagermeister back in the day!! i also was really good at enforcing my friends to drink it with me.

circa 2007. hah.. but, yes, back to licorice! i love it. good’n’plenty, nibs, nips, red vines (shouldn’t they be called black vines??) and even the old favorite gum, blackjack.
(source)
coconut.
OH BOY, i am cuckoo for coconut.. along with the rest of the world. it seems like coconut is one of the IT foods of the moment. step aside, peanut butter and almond butter, coconut butter is in the spotlight. (i still owe you guys my recipe for that goodness, by the way.) when i ask people if they like coconut, they either start professing their love for it and count the ways they like to eat it, or they wrinkle their nose up and shake their head quickly, hoping to shake off the memory of that one time they accidentally ate that cupcake that was coconut flavored.

ketchup and mustard.
these two stand on their own in the love it or loathe it battle, but i put them together since they are both condiments. personally, i love ketchup. i put it on everything from eggs to fries to–yes–baked sweet potatoes. people think i am weird for that one. marshall absolutely HATES ketchup. if i am eating it he can smell it from the other room and lets out a groan while muttering, “ketchup…”
mustard took me awhile to hop the fence on. growing up, i loathed it! if my sandwich accidentally had a speck of mustard on it, i considered the whole thing tainted and refused to eat it. i was a picky kid. now days, i love mustard so much! any kind–yellow, dijon, sweet, spicy.. you name it, i love it. although i still know lots of people who will turn away any item that has been graced with the presence of mustard.
(source)
candy corn.
sick. you people who love candy corn are just straight up crazy. ;) i hate the stuff. when halloween rolls around, i see candy corn crazed individuals coming out of hiding talking about how they can’t wait to eat BAG AFTER BAG of the stuff. good thing it’s a seasonal item!
(source)
mushrooms.
i live in a household with a mushroom hater. it’s a hard life, guys. i absolutely LOVE mushrooms. raw, cooked, in a recipe, on their own.. yum. marshall, on the other hand, isn’t a fan. consequently, the majority of my recipes do not contain mushrooms so i rarely get my mushroom fix. i do always order mushroom-filled menu items (like last friday) and there are a few dishes i can get marshall to eat, like my healthier mushroom stroganoff.
(source)
bacon.
ohhh.. bacon. you trendy food, you. i think that if i had to pick one food that people go crazy over, it’s gotta be bacon. not sure what it is about this salty little number, but people flipping love it!
i could go on, but it’s getting late and i have some black licorice to eat. have a happy tuesday!
Qs~
1. what are your thoughts on the foods above?
2. do you have any other foods to add to the all or nothing list?

It’s sort of funny we have the same love it or leave it list!!
I grew up eating black licorice ice cream mmmm good love, love, love ALL black licorice treats!!
I however can do without red licorice!
I prefer fresh coconut.
Candy corn….two thumbs DOWN!
I would add coffee to the list. Many love the smell but hate the taste….if it could be bottled as a perfume I’d be caught dabbing it behind my ears!!
Love you!
xo
hahaha dabbing it behind your ears. you kill me!
More and more I think Marshall and I would get along really well. I hate ketchup with a passion. Plus mayonnaise. Needless to say I will not eat fry sauce. I love all kinds of mustard. I hate licorice but my husband loves it. I also hate mushrooms. Ick. (Also on the pro-Marshall side I loved a tshirt he wore in a recent post. I think it said Young with little strands coming off each letter.)
Like Momma B I love the smell of coffee. The roasting beans at least, not so much when it’s brewed. I love walking down the coffee isle at the grocery store.
Oh, yeah! It was from one of our favorite bands, Young Widows. You can find it here: http://www.shirtkiller.com/LiteCommerce/cart.php?target=category&category_id=265
I love mushrooms too! I think that tomatoes should be on that list. I absolutely love them but so many people don’t!
Haha, yes SO true about those foods!
mushrooms = no
bacon = no
candy corn = no (I have a weird candy phobia because of how it feels on my teeth)
ketchup = love
mustard = used to love, but I’m allergic to it
coconut = major love
licorice = ick, no.
That coconut flour you picked up is the best. Love the Bob’s red mill version! It tastes so much like raw coconut flour, but not as expensive!
I think cilantro should be added. That seems like I love/hate one too.
That burrito bowl I could totally go for right now, mexican is my major food cuisine love! I could eat it anytime.
I had cilantro on the list and spaced it! Whoops!
A few of those items took me awhile. I used to hate both coconut and mustard but love them now.
No thanks to black licorice and candy corn, and I don’t really like mushrooms much. Bacon isn’t my favorite either – yes, I just said that.
I love that slow cooker chicken recipe – the salsa verde makes it so delicious!
Yay for coconut flour!! And thanks for the shout-out, missy! I’d suggest which one you should make, but I have seriously been having a hard time lately choosing a favorite! Everybody DID go a little crazy over the coconut banana ones tho! ;) But seriously, I can’t help throwing it in almost every recipe…I swear, all it takes is one tablespoon added to the mix and you’ve gone from pancake to panCAKE!! :D
Love this list! I don’t mind mild licorice-flavored stuff…I just had my first taste of absinth a couple of weekends ago and LOVED it…and I really like the taste of fennel, but straight up licorice? Not for me! And I’m totally with you on the candy corn…yuck, yuck, YUCK! People be CRAZY for eating that stuff! But hand over the coconut, ketchup, mustard, mushrooms, and bacon…hmm, but not all together…though minus the coconut, I might could see something happening with the rest! ;)
PS, I’ve GOT to try that with the chicken! I can’t believe it’s already February and I’ve YET to use my slow-cooker! #foodiefail
i know i love coconut flour in pancakes! it really does change the consistency so much. excited to finally whip up a batch of yours this weekend!
I hate ketchup & mustard & mayo!!!! Yuck!!! I’m not a fan of mushrooms either. But I like candy corn and black licorice! In fact, I just bought some of the Easter pastel candy corn!! Meat loaf and tuna are two other things I can’t bring myself to eat even in social situations where it’s rude… yeah… I grew up in the Midwest. Haha.
oh shit there is easter candy corn now?! ugh
I think it’s great that you are training to become a GPP trainer! Way to go girl! :)
And your dinner looks and sounds incredible!
Hate black licorice, Simon would fight a dragon for it. LOVE coconut anythin, including the body butter you got me :) , I’m starting to hate ketchup but I LOVE mustard, bacon. Yum. I feel like Nutella is another one of those all-or-nothing foods. Oh gosh I hate candy corn. I hate it so much. People love or hate pickles too I think. You know my stance on pickles.
lol fight a dragon. and i almost put pickles on the list because of you, but then i realized that they are just OK to me. i don’t got wild over them.. although i definitely would not kill my roommate for dropping an entire jar of them on the floor, splattering pickle juice in every last inch of the kitchen. #oops #sorryboutthat
Cilantro
I’m cray cray!! You know I love candy corn and I know you don’t!! Haha, you have told me! I hate black licorice, one food I yuck too! I used to always throw away my black jelly beans at easter!
Miss ya love and hope you are well! <3
Black licorice: loathe
Coconut: love – and yet forget about! Must change that.
Ketchup & mustard: love
Mushrooms: love
Candy corn: loathe
Bacon: love, but being vegan…
Nothing to add, off the top of my head. I love food. :-D
Nay to the candy corn, Yay to the mushrooms! :D
I’m surprisingly not much of a bacon fan, although I do love sausages! :D
Brussel sprouts. I personally LOVE them. Roasted .. Straight out of the oven all crispy and warm!!! MMM MM MMM I could eat a whole Costco bag in a day ( but the entire neighborhood would hate me and my fiancé would likely kick me out!! Ha ha).
I love licorice and black jelly beans. Yum. Actually, I like most of the stuff on your list aside from bacon. Ketchup, I only like on potato dishes. Is that strange?
No, that’s exactly what it was meant for I think!
I LOOOOVE ketchup on my sweet potatoes! So you’re not alone :) I also live with a mushroom hater, it. is. rough.
BEEF JERKY is another :-)
love or hate it seems…no in between.
haha this is interesting to think about!
black licorice: HATE it (but that might have something to do with the fact that I first time I got fall-down drunk was off of ouzo…)
ketchup/mustard: love ketchup, but only like dijon or honey mustard
cando corn: love
mushrooms: cooked is fine, hate eating them raw (actually, my favourite kind of mushroom is canned mushrooms. is that weird?)
coconut: love it (my mom will not go near it though)
bacon: i think everyone secretly loves it.
candy corn….mmmmm…can it be halloween time??!?!
haha this post is funny – a lot of people are def all or nothing on the above foods! black licorice – YUCK! coconut – LOVE! ketchup & mustard – eh, take em or leave em. candy corn – not a huge fan. bacon – very occasionally. mushrooms – love!
Cilantro for suuure. I cooked with it last week and my husband commented that it tasted like soap. I however, LOVE the stuff.
I meant to put that on the list! Whoops.
Durian. People are so passionate about it there have been over consumption deaths in South East Asia. It’s so pungent it’s banned in certain hotels and airports. People dedicate whole love blogs to the fruit.
Last week I found one in the grocery store and thinking I’ve never tasted and fruit or vegetable I don’t like, I hauled- I bought a small one at 7 pounds- it home. Cracked it open, the pungent sulfuric aroma filled the room, scooped out a bit of the custard and gagged. Tried it again just to be sure, and immediately carried it down the street to the furthest dumpster.
The tasted kept returning on me all night and the smell permeated the kitchen for two days. Revolting. Durian lovers call that “Ambrosia of the Gods”.
I have never heard of it.. but I am convinced that is a good thing!
Ohhhhh…I like the slow cooker chicken recipe! A burrito bowl sounds so good right now!
omg im the same way with candy!!!! i can go months without eating it alt all and then all the sudden halloween rolls around and im always eating it. sometimes i think im going crazy at that time hahah
Love: coconut, ketchup, mustard, bacon
Hate: black licorice, candy corn, mushrooms
Cilantro is another “love or loathe” thing. I’ve actually read articles talking about how cilantro haters often lack a certain chemical, making cilantro taste like soap. I’m one of those people. Blech!
I read this same article! And it’s true–I love cilantro but I know a couple people who can’t stand it and the way they describe the taste is nothing like what I taste. They will only eat the rice at Chipotle if it is cilantro-free (which Chipotle can sometimes accommodate).
Shoot! I totally meant to put cilantro on the list and spaced it. It really is one of those foods! I seriously love it.
I’m a self-proclaimed candy corn lover. And I can’t stand bacon. I’ve just joined the coconut band-wagon. My newest obsession is coconut flour. It’s so gosh-darn delicious! Fun post. :)
i’m all or nothing with most things in my life lol. i love your list except candy corn makes me want to barf. also, i love cinnamon, eggs and the smell of bread but put them together ala french toast and i literally gag! it’s so sad because sometimes we will be going for brunch and i’m practically heaving if the table next to me orders it. i don’t know why it makes me so queasy but you’d think i was morning sick or something?
I know what you mean! I LOVE cottage cheese and fruit, but if you put them together I will barf on your face.
Hate candy corn, and black licorice. Definitely two foods that you either love or hate! LOVE bacon, does anyone seriously loathe it?
I used to! I have only recently come around!
Your dinner looks awesome. I love this post! These are ALL such good ones! I can’t stand black licorice..or red licorice for that matter. I also hate ketchup and mustard. EW!! And salt and vinegar chips. Nate eats the shit out of them. I hate coconut and I hate bacon. Man I’m picky!! But mushrooms and candy corn (actually indian corn) will always have my heart! They are two of my favorite things actually! haha now I am going to read all of the comments on this post. :)
hahaha you like nothing!
I think olives is another one. I won’t go near them, (I can even tell if they’ve touched lettuce in my salad…yeah…cray cray) but my mom and sister can’t get enough of ’em!
I love the sounds of those chicken burrito bowls! Yum!
I agree, all of the above foods you mentioned seem to be pretty all or nothing for people…you love ’em or you hate ’em. I actually love all of the above foods you mentioned EXCEPT the black licorice! ICK! Haha. My husband absolutely hates mustard, and I love it.
It’s so weird to me when people go crazy over candy corn! So gross!
I am with you, sister.
Who hates bacon?!! That’s just wrong. I actually am on the fence about black licorice. I’m okayw ith the candy– I think I like the texture, but anything black licorice flavored/scented grosses me out. I used to hate coconut but it’s grown on me. Do they sell coconut butter at TJs?
Have you had their greek yogurt guac? I need to get more, I went through it like candy, and will definitely be adding burrito bowls to my menu for next week.
Have you thought of making a career transition towards training or getting certified in other personal training? I know you said you wouldn’t turn blogging into a career, and I also have a great job, but feel that eventually I’d like to turn my fitness and writing passions into a full-time career.
I haven’t seen CB at TJs.. only whole foods. But it’s much cheaper to make your own! I know lots of people who hate bacon. In fact, I used to be one of them! It’s just so damn salty.. but if I eat it with something to take the salty edge off, I’m good.
I haven’t tried that guac! I am just now dabbling in Greek yog again since nixing dairy. I had it last night on my burrito bowl and my stomach hurt, so I guess I still shouldn’t have it. Shit.
I have thought of taking nutrition classes to be a certified/registered dietitian, but haven’t considered other PT classes because I am working on my GPP certification, which I believe is as good if not better than some of the courses out there. Plus, it’s a one-on-one class, so I am learning a ton and am able to ask lots of questions!
I love all things black licorice and blackjack gum is something I treat as a prized possession when I’m able to find it. There’s a little dutch store that has like 90 kinds of black licorice, some are salted, some are hard, some soft as taffy. So much fun trying them all. I would say all-sorts are my favorite though, I love the colors :)
Also, have you had Underground? It is a liqueur made here in Ogden that is similar to Jaeger but with a bit more spice. Same people that make Five Wives Vodka…
Oh my hell, that dutch store sounds heavenly! Where is it? And I gotta find that liquor!
“Oh my hell” you are so Utah LOL
It’s called The Old Dutch Store and it is up on Highland. I think just north of brickyard.
Is that a Utah slang? Ha, I never knew! I have lots of friends who say it all over the country. I am totally going to that store ASAP, thank you!
i hadn’t heard ‘oh my hell’ until you. haha maybe i just live under a rock though.
I HATE black licorice. So much. My dad looooooves it.
I love coconut (my husband hates it).
I LOVE ketchup-so does my man. (p.s. I eat it with sweet potatoes toooooooooo!)
I think candy corn is gross as well.
And I really like salt & vinegar chips. Mmmmmm!
as for other things:
-I hate the smell of coffee. So much. like it makes me gag & I have to avoid the aisles of the grocery store.
-I hate bananas & pb (gasp)
-and I LOVE caramel ice cream :)
Totally agree with you, except with the mushrooms. I can take or leave them.
I seriously loathe licorice…..I LOVE candy corn and coconut though and always think it’s weird because a lot of people seriously hate them.
I think you could probably add avocado, beer and hummus to that.
Ohhh avocado is a good one!
i’ve been obsessed with that crockpot chicken ever since you first posted it – i’ve made it 3x! so good!
LOVE bacon, love black licorice.
i feel like eggs and onion are love hate too. love em both :)
I almost put onions on the list but thought it was getting so long! Mmm.. I love them both, too. And yay for that chicken. It’s so damn good. Love you!
yuccckkk: black licorice. coconut. candy corn.
yummm: ketchup and mustard. mushrooms. bacon.
i actually use to HATE ALL of these things except bacon.. but came around to k + m and shrooms. sometimes i sub turkey bacon cause i cant stand super salt bacon. i’m starting to not hate coconut.. i’ve been trying it here and there to see if my tastes have evolved.. not quite there yet.
CILANTRO (which i see in some ofther comments) aka DISH SOAP. gross. blech! i will send a whole bowl of fresh guac back because it has cilantro on it. chipotle ruins their rice with that shit. ugh. makes me sick.
I love ALL of those things, especially candy corn.
Katy Perry has a new popchips flavor called “Katy’s Kettle Korn” that I feel I *must* get my hands on.
I loved it! I tried it.. but then I got a belly ache because after I ate the whole bag to myself (don’t judge) I realized it had dairy. Fail.
So right on there being few people (that I’ve met anyway) who don’t either LOVE or HATE these foods. I’ve found the same with cilantro (I know you mentioned that in the comments) and parsnips. Personally, I love cilantro and parsnips. Candy corn and licorice? No thank you. Mustard, ketchup, bacon and mushrooms? Yes please! Have a great day Janetha!
My Mom LOVED good and plenty and my sister and I thought it was disgusting! She’d always get it at the movies and be so sweet to offer us some and then gleefully exclaim more for me! when we declined. LOL
What an awesome memory!
I think it’s hilarious that so many people have commented that cilantro should be added – so true. Besides the fact that I LOVE it, I also tell people that I’m like cilantro…you either love me or hate me!
I’d also add blue cheese to the list…definitely a polarizing food!
Peeps are another one of those all or nothing foods, in my opinion. I CANT STAND them. I literally am gagging just thinking about them!! Blechhhh!! But my husband? Can’t get enough of them when they come out for Easter. Blech blech blech!
Licorice–Love–all kinds red, black, and chocolate!! I used to buy chocolate licorice in bulk from a local candy store when I was kid.
Ketchup/Mustard–Love. I’m addicted to condiments as well as salsa.
Coconut–not so much–except when mixed with chocolate–love mounds.
Mushrooms–addicted.love.
Candy Corn-despise! Tastes like wax.
Bacon–don’t know never tried. It’s not kosher. But I hate the smell.
Cilantro–love
I’m allergic to black licorice – so random but true! So it’s definitely on my loathe list… I’m also coco for coconut, love mustard [nay to ketchup], loathe candy corn, love mushrooms, and love [turkey] bacon :) Another one that I’ve noticed is hit or miss is peanut butter… I definitely love it! Oh, and salt + vinegar combo, but that’s another love too!
I’m with you on sharing a kitchen with a mushroom hater… I mean, who hates mushrooms?! I love them… I jokingly say I’d eat them on anything, even cereal (though that’s a joke… really… I think).
As for your other love it or loathe it foods, I’m not a big fan of any of them. Sure, ketchup and mustard are fine. Black licorice and coconut are definitely NOT fine ;)
I agree with all the comments about cilantro–I’ve actually been told it’s a hereditary thing? Idk… I should Google that.
Burrito bowls !!! Never tried it and it looks SO good.
My husband HATES mushrooms too! Which is good in some ways, I get more of them but don’t add them to as many meals since I’ll end up picking them out for him. Black Licorice would be on my absolute HATE list. Can’t stand the stuff!
I was just talking about these kinds of foods yesterday! I posted a recipe featuring roasted beets yesterday, so my husband and I were talking about how people either love ’em or hate ’em. Clearly, I love them!
You should add Marmite and Vegemite to the list. I also think bleu cheese!
I also live with a mushroom hater (he claims to be allergic, but it’s an excuse)
