two meals + two moves.

hello! how was your monday?

mine was… exhausting. but fun!

why? well, first of all it was a monday, which means i have to be to work at 7 instead of 8:30.

but the real reason? i worked out twice.

this girl does not do two-a-days.

i accidentally made plans with two people for two different workouts.. and so today, i was a two-a-dayer.

today my friend candice (you guys may know her from bangin’ body of a mother) asked if i wanted to go to GPP with her after work. kerryne had gone to gpp this morning and told me the workout of the day was suuuuper good, so i told candice i was definitely in!

on my drive home from work, i was talking to momma b (as i do, every single day! it’s a ritual and, quite frankly, a requirement in my life) and she asked if i was still planning to go to water aerobics with her tonight at 9 PM.

yes, WATER AEROBICS! that’s the big adventure i eluded to in yesterday’s video. except i thought we were going on wednesday, not today! whoops!

i was already committed to GPP and there was no way i was skipping out on water aerobics–hello, i have never done any kind of exercise in a swimming pool in my life.. i had to go. so i sucked it up and decided to go to both GPP and water aerobics. you only live once, right? i know.. i am so adventurous. not quite sky diving, but it will do.

after work i had a snack (orange vanilla chobani was involved, it’s my new favorite flavor!) and geared up for GPP. i had checked the workout earlier and it looked ROUGH. i got there at 5:00 and was thrilled to finally meet the owner, neil, after talking to him back and forth online for so long. neil quickly explained the technique for the workout of the day, and then the clock started!

you can check out the full workout, called “specter” on the GPP blog. you will see that it is freaking crazy. i did make a slight modification and went with a 25# bar instead of 45#. other than that shortcut, i did the workout in its entirety in 37 minutes and 33 seconds.

i was gasping for air at the end, but i am glad i made it through all the reps. i officially hate burpees. i already didn’t love them, but after doing 210 of them tonight, i really hate them! big time. yes, i said two hundred ten. oy. other than the burpee hell, i really loved working out at GPP again. not a surprise, after my first time last week i knew i’d be back. the sense of community that exists really helps push you through your workout. what’s even better is neil was watching everyone throughout the workout, making sure to help us all on our form. he corrected me when i was doing my power squat cleans wrong (of course i was doing them wrong! i had never done one before today and i ended up doing 210 of them!) and once i had it he praised me on my form which really made me push harder. near the end of the workout i was even able to do the last few sets of power squat cleans with the Rx 45# bar.

i made candice and neil pose for a photo after the intense workout. gotta have the #PROOF, right?!

NewImage

i am short.

i left GPP and was on a mission. i had to find a swimsuit that was SUITable (hehe.. punny!) for water aerobics. all my strappy little numbers weren’t gonna fly when exercising in the deep end! i hit the dressing rooms and quickly discovered that trying on one-piece swimsuits is somewhat traumatizing. i am really claustrophobic and every one i tried on made me feel trapped and confined. how did i ever wear those trendy body suits in the 80s?! beats the hell out of me. i will tell you one thing, finding a one piece suit was FAR out of my comfort zone and totally counts as an adventurous april submission. too bad i can’t win my own giveaway, aye?

i did finally settle on a solid black suit and managed to spend an extra $100 on top of the price of the suit (damn you, target) and sped home to shower (much needed, i was so sweaty!) and whip up some dinner. tonight’s dinner menu was chicken piccata with spaghetti squash and broccoli.

 IMG 0882

notice anything special about this photo? you probably don’t, but i do.. there are MUSHROOMS in my dinner. marshall is coming around and it puts a big smile on my face.

IMG 0878

i took this photo at 8:19 and hoovered the meal so quick that by 8:25 i was finished eating. i prayed real hard that i wouldn’t get a cramp in the pool at aerobics! there was definitely not an hour between dinner and workout number two of the night.

i made it to the rec center right on time. momma b and i buckled into our waist life jackets and were ready for action!

Screen Shot 2012 04 23 at 10 56 50 PM

the water workout was actually SUPER fun. we were in the deep end and it lasted an hour. we did all sorts of exercises including crunches, push ups off the wall, overhand and underhand pull ups on the bars that were on the edge of the pool (above the water), and lots of different types of laps. i even took my life jacket (belt?) off for some of the laps. i am not a swimmer by any means, so this was an adventure for sure. however, i don’t think i will be registering for a triathlon any time soon. or ever.

NewImage

this was a great adventure and i am happy momma b and her friend, holly, invited me along for the ride!

i came home, showered the chlorine off myself, and found my stomach growling with hunger. it’s no surprise, i expended more energy in a five hour period than i usually do over the course of two days. i decided on something quick and easy (and tasty!)–a chocolate peanut butter banana protein shake.

 IMG 0890IMG 0886

this had 1.5 cups almond milk, 1 scoop plant fusion vanilla bean protein powder, 1 TB dark cocoa powder, 2 TB PB2, a frozen banana, 1/8 tsp each xanthan and guar gums (for thickness, not required) and a whole lot of ice. to give you an idea of how exhausted i am, i blended this up, poured it in the cup, tasted it, and wondered why it tasted different than usual. oh, don’t worry, i left the protein powder out. wow. i poured the shake back in the blender, added the protein powder, blended again, and THEN i had my shake. it hit the spot! honestly this combo tastes exactly like a real-deal milk shake. try it, you’ll like it!

well, i’ve had enough action for one day. i am going to settle in on the couch and watch some family feud. it’s our nightly ritual.

Q~

have you ever worked out twice in a day? is it something you do regularly/often? (if so.. you might be crazy.)

beatriceqq April 23, 2012 at 11:29 pm

can i ask about the dark chocolate powder is what brand please?:)

Janetha April 23, 2012 at 11:32 pm

It’s Hershey’s Special Dark! I found it here: http://amzn.to/IxzEvE

Justine @ Life With Cheeseburgers April 24, 2012 at 9:28 am

I get this all the time, and usually can find it at Walmart or anywhere. I actually use it in the protein pudding recipe I just posted on my blog: ttp://lifewithcheeseburgers.com/2012/04/24/chocolate-protein-pudding-snack/

beatriceqq April 23, 2012 at 11:30 pm

i’m sorry to make so many comments but i forgot to mention you look so good in the photos in this post!!!:P

Janetha April 23, 2012 at 11:32 pm

Haha, I don’t think so, but thank you!!

Heidi Nicole April 23, 2012 at 11:57 pm

I’d probably drown in water aerobics…but I think it would be a lot of fun to give it a shot, especially with my mom! She’d be a hoot! …she’s also the only person I know who says “she’d be a hoot”…

Amber April 23, 2012 at 11:58 pm

I actually work out twice a day a lot. I try to get a workout in during my lunch break at work everyday but it’s usually really short, so I try to do a zumba class or something in the evening also. I really like working out during my lunch because it’s out of the way before I get home from work, and I can go take a class if I choose to and I don’t feel guilty if I didn’t have time or didn’t feel like it.

Amber April 23, 2012 at 11:59 pm

PS- I am SUPER jealous that you got Marshall to eat mushrooms. I absolutely love them but my husband won’t touch them with a 10 foot pole!

Kristin @ STUFT Mama April 24, 2012 at 12:01 am

You and your mom are so stinking cute. If my eyes weren’t half shut right now I’d be carrying myself to the kitchen to make that delicious smoothie. Oh and that dark cocoa powder has gone way up in price lately. Lame. Family Feud? No DWTS? :)

Khushboo April 24, 2012 at 12:23 am

Oh boy I am exhausted just reading about your Monday! You are my hero- 210 burpees!!!

Meggi April 24, 2012 at 12:25 am

Wow, awesome job on both workouts! I have always wanted to try water aerobics! In gymnastics and competition cheer, we would have 2-a-days during the summer sometimes. Last year I liked doing a morning workout and then going to cardio cinema at night with my husband. Man, we haven’t done that in a long time … Oops ;)

Gina B. April 24, 2012 at 2:44 am

It’s so sweet how close you are with your mom! We used to have 2 a days AND 3 a days for soccer in college. It was hell on earth! By the 3rd practice/run/training session, I swear your body hated you. TMI, but there were mornings I literally could barely use the toilet without grabbing onto something for help getting up. :)

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva April 24, 2012 at 3:20 am

There was a point in time when I worked out two times a day….and yes it was crazy!!! I don’t think working out that often was necessary but for some reason I just couldn’t get enough. Now I’m much more balanced and only exercise 4 – 5 times a week…that’s plenty for me :) Your aqua class sounds like fun! I’m signing up to do anti-gravity yoga for one of my adventures…looks super interesting

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva April 24, 2012 at 3:26 am

P.S. what are your thoughts on the plant fusion protein powder??? Texture/taste wise how does it compare to other veg protein powders you’ve had? I’m about to run out of sunwarrior vegan protein and may try something new this time around. Any recommendations would be amazing :)

Janetha April 24, 2012 at 9:31 am

I absolutely love it! I have not tried a lot of vegan protein powders.. just Olympian Labs pea protein. I like plant fusion a lot!

Fox Peterson April 24, 2012 at 3:40 am

I love aqua workouts! And strangely enough, despite being pretty fun, they keep me in great cardio shape when I can’t/don’t run. I mean, like “racing fit.” It’s awesome.

Back in the elite runner days I used to do “2 a days”. Now I usually take a short constitutional (I love that phrase) after or before dinner in the afternoon to sort of get myself moving again, but my main workout is always in the morning. I guess maybe if I wanted to race again I’d do 2 a days but for now… nah! :D

Mattie @ Comfy and Confident April 24, 2012 at 4:48 am

Two-a-day huh! Wow, pretty impressive. And they both seem like they were are great workout. Much deserving of a delicious smoothie! It is super cute that you and your mom workout together. I wish my mom was close so we could go for runs together!

Lauren April 24, 2012 at 4:59 am

I don’t know if I’m more impressed by the fact that one..you rocked two fabulous workouts today, two that you rocked that suit like a supermodel or three that you did water aerobics at 9pm at night! You’re a rockstar my love!

Sierra April 24, 2012 at 5:03 am

The Hershey’s Dark chocolate is amazing!

My husband is the same, so we are a 99% mushroom free household.

If I had your abs…I would not wear a one-piece…ever.

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey April 24, 2012 at 5:15 am

Good lord lady – what time do you go to bed at night? I think you were up like 4 hours after me. Ha! I’ve done two a days before – they were normal in high school for swimming. Weight conditioning in the morning, Swimming in the afternoon! Every day.

Janetha April 24, 2012 at 9:31 am

Haha usually midnight!

Jillian @ Sprinkle Massacre April 24, 2012 at 5:16 am

Haha! I’ve actually gotten half way through a smoothie before realizing I forgot the protein powder!

Ash @ Freckles and Spice April 24, 2012 at 5:32 am

I used to workout twice a day when I played Rugby. It got too intense for me.

I want to swim more! I did a under water running class once – it was so hard!! I was pooped. Water workouts are so much more challenging than I expected.
PS >> I’m happy Marshall is warming up to mushrooms.

erin aka eef April 24, 2012 at 5:38 am

Wow! Can’t believe you got two BIG workouts in one day—not sure I’d be up for that!

I do work out 2x a day, but not like that… haha I do HIIT in the morning and weights in the afternoon. I workout for an hour-ish total 5x a week. I kind of like them being split, and supposedly you can burn more fat this way, but not sure if it’s really helping.

Erica April 24, 2012 at 5:53 am

I usually only work out twice in one day if I have to teach twice. And I rarely do it. It is So much on the body! What fun workouts though. You know I’m totally short too. We’d look “normal” height in a picture together :). Love that you did water aerobics. And yes, orange vanilla chobani…so good!

Claire @ Live and Love to Eat April 24, 2012 at 5:58 am

I love Hershey’s Special Dark – especially for smoothies – so much flavor for few calories! I’ve only done twice a day workouts a few times, but they make me feel amazing.

Michelle April 24, 2012 at 6:09 am

I don’t know if it’s a true workout but it’s movement which counts a little bit, but I have been known to take the basset’s to the dog park twice in one day. It’s almost a mile around so that’s 2 miles of walking.

Calee April 24, 2012 at 6:18 am

Looks like you had a fun day yesterday!

I used to do two-a-days when I worked at Drake University. They had workout classes over lunch and the rec center was a 5 min walk from my desk. My friend Shelly and I would do Muscle Mix or Pilates over lunch and then do our “real” workout in the evening.

I’d do the same at my current job, but I’m at a bigger university and the rec center is 15 mins away … and all the good classes are at the other rec center on campus and that’s 20 mins away. LAME.

Bonnie April 24, 2012 at 6:56 am

Love this post – that’s a whole lotta workouts (and a whole lotta burpees! whew!). :) Great work sticking with both commitments! I love the idea of two-a-days although I rarely workout twice – it’s more like if it happens it happens. Maybe if I took a class I’d also get a short workout in? But usually it’s not planned and just because it’s too beautiful outside for me to NOT move. ;)

Sara April 24, 2012 at 7:13 am

My new goal is to get you to sign up for a Tri in the next year ;) You’ll get to have two to three workouts almost everyday! (If you do Ironman, let’s start with a sprint distance to get you hooked). Jealous you have spaghetti squash. It’s out of season here

Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio April 24, 2012 at 8:02 am

I have gotten into the routine of working out twice on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. I go to spin in the morning and do Jillian Michaels Body Revolution in the evening. I am tired, that’s for sure, but I feel great and always have the day after to “rest” by just doing 1 workout in the evening. I’m really enjoying it and that’s key.

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning April 24, 2012 at 8:04 am

Back when I was really insane about working out (and overdoing it) I would work out twice a day EVERY day. I always did spin in the morning (waking up at 4:30) and then more cardio and strength-training after work. But, I was a nut about it- logging about 3 hours a day and it wrecked my metabolism big time.
I can’t believe you did 210 burpees!! I love/hate them, but don’t think I’ve ever done more than 50 in one session!
I would LOVE to do water aerobics! Out of the two gyms I teach at, neither has a pool. I need to pick up a class at the YMCA just to use their pool! (and how cute are you and Momma B!)
Also- plant fusion protein powder ROCKS.

Olivia April 24, 2012 at 8:16 am

I do not think I have ever worked out twice in one day – unless you count 20 minutes of treadmill while waiting for a bodypump class once! haha

ali moll April 24, 2012 at 8:42 am

GPP workout was crazy and kicked my trash! I was three reps short, because the 7:30pm Zumba class was going to start. Took me almost an hour. Ugh. Next time I will finish. I did workout twice though. Took an hour break and then hit a Zumba class at Skills at 8:30 pm. That was TOUCH!

Thanks for the inspiration Janetha!

janetha @ meals & moves April 24, 2012 at 9:28 am

I honestly have NO idea how you go to Zumba after GPP. You, my friend, are inspiring! And STRONG. Hope to meet you at GPP someday, if you see me there come say hello!

Carly April 24, 2012 at 8:45 am

I have not worked out twice a day – but I would like to! One of my goals (I guess it’s a goal) is to eventually work out before work. I don’t drive a car so lugging all of my ‘getting-ready’ stuff is a pain in the butt. I’m hoping once it’s warmer I can just shower at the gym and leave my hair curly.

I am seriously impressed with those burpees. I think 210 might kill me.

Heather (Heather's Dish) April 24, 2012 at 8:49 am

i have always wanted to do water aerobics! haha…looks like you girls had a lot of fun :)

i kind of have to do two a days right now since Wes’s schedule isn’t really conducive to getting a really solid workout in. one day! (fingers crossed)

emily (a nutritionist eats) April 24, 2012 at 9:13 am

You are hardcore girl! :)
I want your dinner.

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List April 24, 2012 at 9:13 am

I’m a regular “two a dayer”. With teaching, I kind of have to be. But I love it. I’d rather workout than do most anything else.

Cat @ Breakfast to Bed April 24, 2012 at 9:22 am

hahahahaha!!

no.

unless you count running and weights as a 2 a day.

elaine c. April 24, 2012 at 9:54 am

i used to do two-a-days a lot when i was younger, but now i’m lucky if i’m a one-a-dayer! i still have to work on starting that jillian 30 day shred soon and i’m actually looking forward to it!

so dumb Q, do you have to know how to swim to do water aerobics?? i can’t swim (even though i’ve taken lessons), but water aerobics has ALWAYS looked so fun!

that chicken piccata looks yummy! love mushrooms.

Janetha April 24, 2012 at 9:58 am

NO! You don’t have to swim at all. We had floaty belts on and were just doin’ our thing in the water like we would on land, but it was tougher since we had to work against the water! It was great.

Stephanie @ Mr and Meatless April 24, 2012 at 10:28 am

I RARELY workout twice in a day. But I have….usually on Saturdays, strange as that may seem. Mornings are NOT my thing and I find that I can manage two workouts a day if I do one in the morning, then sort of forget I did it and go again in the afternoon!

Yummy looking shake! It sounds a lot like mine this morning…frozen banana, chocolate protein powder, a scoop of pb and almond milk. So delicious! Peanut butter makes everything better!

Heather @ Fit Mama Real Food April 24, 2012 at 11:51 am

Whoop whoop for water aerobics! I went this morning… it’s an every Tuesday morning thing now. Love every minute of it, except for smelling like chlorine all day (to me) even after showering.

Have an awesome Tuesday!

Annette@FitnessPerks April 24, 2012 at 11:55 am

I guess I AM crazy then, b/c most days are two-a-days for me! Teaching and doing my own workouts :) But I love it, and such is life. I shower like 3 times a day though–which can be annoying!

And YAH to you for doing such adventurous things!! That really rocks. I love to swim, and I think you should come do the half ironman with me in AUG!! :)

Janetha April 24, 2012 at 12:16 pm

Hahaha NO WAY, NO HOW! But I am doing Dirty Dash June 2, you wanna be on my team?!

Kim @ The Family Practice April 24, 2012 at 12:34 pm

I love love love water aerobics! I love the move where you cling to the wall with one arm, feet up and then do lever crunches. I have no idea what to call em but these are great – my instructor just calls them belly burners :)

Also, I NEVER thought I’d be doing a tri – swimming is not my strong suit AT ALL, neither is running…so two for three I am pretty crappy at. BUT, I am training for a sprint tri! I was signed up and ready to do one in January but got into my bad car accident the day before :( Now I’m not only going through training for a make up tri but I’m going through PT for my busted up hip.

PS. Longest comment ever!

Paige @ Running Around Normal April 24, 2012 at 12:48 pm

I work out twice in a day a lot! But not to that caliber ;) Usually I’ll do my cardio in the morning before/after a client, and then later when I’m back at the gym I’ll do some strength. Each last about a half hour or so :)

Carrie April 24, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Yikes! Now that’s a busy day!
I used to do 2 workouts in a day when I was heavily into tri training, but I haven’t ran a tri since 2010 and so I’ve been quite comfy with my once a day workouts. :)

Jess @ Truly.Into.Fitness April 24, 2012 at 1:29 pm

How are you so stinkin’ cute!! Loved this post!
I use to do two workouts in one day and loved it – now with my work schedule, it’s hard to!! I’ll have to find a way at some point:P It definitely makes you feel so strong but also exhausted by the end of the day;)

Kat @ Balancing Kat April 24, 2012 at 1:50 pm

GPP is a lot like CrossFit. So happy you like it! Burpees are mean – I just tell myself that I must learn to love them as they are inevitable. :) I really like the chicken picatta dish, the PB smoothie, and your workouts. You had a fun day! Great post!

Lisa April 24, 2012 at 2:06 pm

I never ever workout twice in a day, too much for me. I used to when I was a competitive swimmer, but thankfully that is no longer the case. Great job with the adventures! Sounds like an insanely busy day. That GPP workout sounds intense, I so want to try it! Your smoothie looks super good too, yum.

Heather @ Better With Veggies April 24, 2012 at 2:08 pm

Hahaha – yes! Two a day workouts are fairly normal for me, such is the life of a multisport athlete. I’m not doing it as much recently since I’m doing short course races this year, but it’s VERY normal for long course races.

And I love that smoothie recipe, I make something very similar. :)

Krista April 24, 2012 at 3:47 pm

Your and Candice’s arms must have been nice ‘n’ sweaty because it looks like Neil is trying to not touch them. haha!

Go you and Momma B! Sometimes I’ll do 2 workouts in a day, but showering twice can become a time-consuming a pain. :)

Janetha April 24, 2012 at 3:56 pm

Hahah seriously, we were disgusting.

LG April 24, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Hey Janetha!

One thing I have been wanting to ask is if you could do a “post-post” Livefit Trainer post. Have your results been maintain-able? What’s it like coming off of a program like that, like a few months later? Would you still recommend it? Do you wish you were still doing it or are you glad it’s done? I’ve been thinking about doing it but am curious about what it would be like afterwards, you know? If I’d feel lost. Thanks!!!

L.

Janetha April 24, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Hey! I don’t plan to do a post LiveFit post, only because that’s in the past and I am focusing on my current workouts.. but I am happy to answer that here in the comments!

At first I wasn’t sure what to do, so I did LiveFit workouts from Phases 2 and 3 up until my trip to Mexico. After that, i came home and occasionally did LiveFit workouts still, sometimes did my own lifting routine, and actually took quite a bit of time off from working out all together. I believe that maintaining (and losing, actually) is 75% nutrition and 25% exercise.

If you just stay active, make sure you eat clean, and don’t slack off entirely.. you will be able to maintain any fitness goal you have reached. That said, I like to follow a plan, so I have signed up for the fitmixer boot camp. It doesn’t start until May 14, so I am just making sure I work out 5x a week, eat clean meals 80% of the time, and live a healthy lifestyle.

I am not glad or sad that LiveFit is over. I think it’s a great program and I would totally do it again, but I realize our bodies need variety, so doing it again wouldn’t be as beneficial as the first go-round. I say you should give it a shot!

LG April 25, 2012 at 8:06 am

Thanks Janetha! That’s great information. Hmmm. I will check into this program further!

Charissa April 24, 2012 at 4:24 pm

I’ve always wanted to try water aerobics…they sound like such fun!

Betty April 24, 2012 at 5:30 pm

I dont mind if they’re not both crazy.. I could do insanity in the am and then some light cardio/walking with scout at night.

Loveee pb banana shakes! I’ve ben craving one lately actually.. Guess its time to make one!

Naomi(onefitfoodie) April 24, 2012 at 6:11 pm

id love to get in a swim!! its such good exercise, easy on the joints and hard!! im a shorty too! 5’2…shorties unite!

Man I would love to have time to make some of the delicious meals you hjave been enjoying! i feel like I eat out of tupperwares on the go non stop lol!!

momma b. April 24, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Burpees sound hard! Dinner looks fabulous! Love love the new swimsuit! Had a blast paddling with you in the deep end!

Yes when I was doing live fit I would do weights in the morning and cardio at night. Now I’m pleased to get one good workout 5 days a week!!

Do I spy a new lulu lemon top?!? You are the cutest ever and I love you!!!
