yellow.
let me set the current scene.
it’s 9:41 PM.
i feel like there is a porcupine in my throat that is poking me with his (or her) quills every time i swallow.
i have zero hearing in my left ear, it is completely plugged. i’m beginning to wonder if it will ever unplug or if i am forever doomed.
marshall told me to stop being dramatic.
i have sharp, stabby pains in my stomach for some reason unbeknownst to me. they hurt. real bad. i have a feeling it’s the pharmaceutical cocktail i’ve got going on in my belly at the moment.. i hope it passes soon.
my taste buds have failed me. i have three liquids in front of me.. none of which i can taste. i can’t taste the kleenex, either.. FYI.

okay, okay.. i will stop complaining. for a minute, at least.
i only worked for about three hours today before heading home sick. my boss actually demanded that i go home and rest. who am i to say no? i gladly took off early.
i swooped by the grocery store so i could snag an antibiotic from the pharmacy along with a prescription to help soothe my sore throat. i literally told the nurse on the phone that i couldn’t very well keep eating my weight in popsicles or i would surely blow up like a balloon and not fit into any of my clothes.. so i NEEDED something for the throat pain. she laughed and fulfilled my plea.
so now i am fully stocked with FOUR prescriptions. two from yesterday and two from today. i don’t love taking medicine, but i am desperate and feel awful. this better do the job and making me feel well again.

i got home and, luckily, still had my taste buds working at this time. it’s adventurous april and i was feeling snacky, so i busted out a new-to-me protein snack that i had ordered online awhile back. let the adventures begin!
april adventure #1: a new kind of chip.

i wasn’t sure what to expect from these chips since the protein cereal i’d tried (that i ordered from the same website) was absolutely awful. i actually had been putting off trying these chips BECAUSE of the bad cereal experience. but it is adventurous april, right? and those chips weren’t eating themselves.. so i dug in.

the verdict? i LOVED them. they reminded me of these chips i used to eat as a kid called pizzarias.. remember those? keebler made them. not sure if they are still around. but if you click that link you will see a super sweet commercial for them from 1991! anyway, that’s exactly what these chips tasted like. they have great stats, too:

i have a feeling i will be ordering these again. first april adventure? success! granted, it was a teeny, tiny adventure.. but like i said, anything new counts as an adventure! that definitely includes any new foods you try this month.
you know me and my sweet tooth, so after my savory chips i was craving something sweet. i spotted a new flavor of arctic zero at the grocery store today (smith’s marketplace, for you locals) and squealed with delight.
april adventure #2: a new flavor of arctic zero.

COOKIES AND CREAM! my favorite flavor of ice cream in arctic zero form. i was stoked when i spotted it.
okay. let’s talk about arctic zero for a minute. i have to start by saying it IS NOT ice cream. it’s just not. you can’t crack open a pint and expect to think you are eating ice cream, or you will be let down. arctic zero should be called a FROZEN TREAT. it has an icier texture than ice cream.. but it also has a fantastic nutritional profile so when you eat the whole pint you don’t need to worry about undoing a workout session or three. the whole pint is 150 calories, 24g carbs, 14g protein, 8g fiber, and 0g fat.
i have tried a few other flavors of arctic zero. i really like the vanilla maple. the chocolate mint is just OK. the strawberry reminded me of eating medicine. and the cookies and cream? WINNER. by far the best flavor. april adventure #2: success!
i did as my boss told me to do and took a load off and got some rest this afternoon, but whenever i am home during the day on a weekday i get a little antsy and think i have to do something productive. i ended up mopping the floor while talking to my (other) boss on the phone for a half hour. when we hung up, i decided i should make something. yep, i had a kitchen adventure!
randy helped.

he’s a good helper, for sure.

for my april adventure #3 i made my own trail mix AND made cinnamon roasted almonds for my first time ever. um, SO easy. i will have a post coming soon with the recipe & a how-to.
okay, so i managed to sneak three little adventures in before my MAIN adventure that was planned for tonight. i had mentioned that i was a little nervous about it.. did anyone guess what it was??

april adventure #4: BODYPUMP.
yep. i finally bit the bullet and tried bodypump. i know, i know.. it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to all of you regular bodypumpers. but i am not a class-goer. i prefer working out alone. i prefer lifting heavy weights in smaller sets. i prefer not doing anything that requires a lick of coordination because i have none. however, i have been wanting to give bodypump a try for years. YEARS, people. candice happens to teach pump at my gym every other tuesday and i kept telling her i would go. i was lying. i never went. i definitely kept putting it off because it was totally out of my comfort zone and i wanted to stick to what i knew, what i liked, what i was comfortable with.
and then adventurous april came along, and i decided it was time. i know, i am so dramatic. marshall already informed me of this. i recruited momma b and my sister, suni, to head to the class with me tonight. everything is more fun with family!

i honestly had no idea what to expect with bodypump.. i just knew i would be hitting all areas of my body with high reps. candice did a great job of walking the class through all the exercises and letting us know when to change our bar weight and how much to load it up with. i gotta say, though, i got a little flustered with the constant changing of plates and weights! i have some practicing to do.

the hour long class whizzed by. it seriously was over before i knew it! i didn’t work up as much of a sweat as i’d expected, but i definitely felt the burn on certain parts of the workout–namely the triceps and biceps. go figure, those are my weaker muscles! a few times i got a little lost since i am not hip with the bodypump lingo such as “let it ride” or “in the basement”–but lucky for me i have eyes and am pretty good at following along, so i got the hang of it. momma b did, too.

check out her guns! and she’s rocking the vibrams. my mom is pretty freaking rad.
i think bodypump is a great way to hit all your muscles in one quick session and i definitely will be going again sometime. i also think it would be beneficial to strengthening those weaker muscles of mine like my triceps and biceps because having an instructor pushing me along really made me work harder than i might when on my own. next time i want to up the weight for certain parts of the session (squats, lunges, and chest) so i will get a better workout on those body parts.
i don’t know why i was such a baby and waited so long to try bodypump. i liked it more than i thought i would and it was fun to have candice leading the class. thanks for making me go, lady!

well, that’s my BIG adventure. combine that with my three little ones and i’ve already had four adventures this month!
everyone has been sending in their own april adventures and i have to say it is really fun to see how you all are challenging yourselves to step out of your comfort zone. i am excited to share the round up post at the end of the first week. remember, if you want to participate, check out the instructions here! this week’s prize is a contigo cold thermos. grab your adventure pants and join in the fun.
well, i am going to go curl up into a ball and try to sleep this sickness away. here’s to a better tomorrow, hopefully full of more adventures!
Qs~
have you tried bodypump? love it/hate it?
how do you feel about group fitness in general?

I love BodyPump. I didn’t know what to expect the first time I went, but I feel in love! I’ve been going since August and I almost always make it three times a week.
I’m not big on all kinds of group fitness…but I do love BP. It def brings out my competitive side and it pushes me even harder than I would push myself alone.
You & momma B with your guns & vibrams! Awesome.
Lovelovelove group exercise. Like body pump but I do prefer weights on my own. I’d want to go much higher on legs but they seem to tie in legs with shoulders, so I can’t go as heavy as I’d like. I find BP hard at the time but I’m rarely sore. Feel better!
My best fix for a sore throat and cold is orange juice mixed with sprite/7up – the OJ has the good for your stuff and the sprite/7up has the carbonation and bubbles that feel good on the way down!
But really, you much have some great meds for being able to take on body pump with a cold! I’ve considered the class but can’t even follow along in yoga so it terrifies me!
yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! I’m so excited for you! Way to rock the BP. And very cool that you took your first class from a blogger <3. Hang in there- hope you're feeling better. I have been hit with a similar cold/throat ache. Ugh….I'm planning on picking up some artic zero tomorrow!!
Loved having you there! You rocked it!
I love body pump! at my gym in the UK we have just launched our latest releases which has Jessie J & Domino for the triceps track, i find i get into it more it the music fits well. It helps to have great instructors too & the main pump lady here is – even if she is stuck in a knee brace – she can still do a great job!
As much as i love raising money for my marathon (11 days to go :) !!!!) I can’t wait to get back to my classes full time rather than looking after my legs (i have £1,230 raised so far – i hope for double that!) I really feel like i could put my weight selection up on this latest release & challenge myself – but not taking risks at the moment.
Glad you enjoyed it. Do they do any other les mills programmes at your gym?
I have no idea!
Oh and way to go on raising the money!
Normally I do Body Pump, Step, Combat, Attack, Balance & we are just getting the new 30 min core – CX Worx . I find yoga & pilates to slow & a bit boring so Balance is perfect for me because its slightly more upbeat often using modern music but track 3 really works the legs hard still!
Sung my little heart out to that triceps track again today :) I certainly was feeling “sexy and free” this morning Another £100 since my other comment and more prizes collected.
I love that you opened with “yellow”.
Sorry about being sick! that stinks.
miss you.
Hope you feel better soon! I’m sick, too! Doc just told me I had bronchitis today, and I can’t work out for a week! :( What a bummer. Just started reading your blog and love it.
I used to be a bodypump addict and did a little bit of it last year. I think it’s a great way to intro into resistance training, but now I prefer doing less reps and more weight. i do however really enjoy group fitness. My favs are body attack, body balance, and yoga or pilates. But to be honest I haven’t done these classes in a long time!!! Oh and I used to do spin like 2 times a week but haven’t hopped on a bike in years…I’m kind of scared I’m not fit enough anymore! Maybe adventurous april will give me the kick I need :) Hope you feel better soon!
Feel better! Try a neti pot!
now I can see where you get those good genes for muscles from :D gorgeous girls! mom and daughter!
body pump sounds awesome, but I have never ever tried it! would love to though :) Maybe for an april adventure ;)
Keep going with all of those adventures girl :D I love them! I just have one question – do I need to “send” you my adventures? How will you know about them? :) just a bit confuseled ;)
I’m like you in that I tend to enjoy doing my own thing for weights. LOVE spin classes and the energy in those though. I still like bodypump for a different type of workout from time to time and to do more endurance based work. Glad you had fun!
PS – I hope I’m like your mom when I get older. I want to be the fit rocking mommy with the guns!
Momma B you look great. I don’t like body pump I think because of all the people in the room.
Look at you stepping out of your comfort zone! So glad you enjoyed pump!!! I honestly don’t think I would get in nearly as many strength workouts without it. :)
Years ago (okay, like 8+ years ago), I used to take a lot of classes. One class I took was similar to what is called Body Pump today. I did like it and took it about 2-4 times a month.
Now days, classes just do not fit in my schedule. I’m a 5:00 amer or 4 pmer and classes do not start at those times and waiting around isn’t appealing. I like the freedom to change/stop my workouts at will and the class makes me feel like I have to finish it (or interrupt everyone by leaving). That being said, I do take a yoga class occasionally.
I love bodypump, but only do it once in a while because I like to switch things up. I go through phases. The most I’d ever done it was FOUR days in one week. Crazy. I was so sore and it was too much. Twice a week is more logical! Probably gonna get back into it this summer.
stop doing things and rest! :) I hope you’re feeling better today!
you should try the coffee flavored arctic zero! it is amazing!! i wish i could find the vanilla maple though.. that sounds like it’s right up my alley :)
I’ve been dying to try body pump!
Body Pump was the first class I ever took 5 years ago. I could not believe the transformation of my body. I went every other day and was hooked.
It is a great class to get you on the road to resistance training. Can’t say enough about it. Still do it to this day, only now I work out more on my own. AWESOME !!!!
I could barely read this post…don’t have my bifocals on.
ahhhh I looooooove bodypump. the only class around here is at a gym that I’d have to pay to be a member of (until August. then our apt. complex is getting free memberships!) or at 9:30 PM at the gym I belong to. ugh.
I remember doing bodypump and lifting HEAVY weights instead of light ones. Because that’s what I do. And I remember not being able to move for the rest of the week.
As far as classes go … I used to love them when i worked at my last job. My coworkers and I would do pilates or “muscle mix” over lunch. one lady and I used to do step on Friday and get super sweaty. My theory is as long as you’re moving and sweating during class, then you’re doing okay. Step was evil. I am not coordinated at all.
I hope you feel better.
I can’t wait to see that recipe!
Your mom is a damn rockstar and I love her too, creepy I know ;)
Love you!
I hope you are feelin better today! i do not do a lot of group fitness classes but not because I dont want to. My gym doesn’t offer too many which is a total bummer because I think I would love it. Instead, I have to make my own workouts and push myself!
I hope you feel better soon. Have you ever mixed arctic zero with almond or soy (or regular for that matter) milk? It’s sort of like a milkshake and I think it tastes better that way.
My gym doesn’t offer Body Pump so I’ve never tried it.
I haven’t tried bodypump, because I live in isolation, but it looks kind of fun, but scary. I’m definitely scared of crossfit.
I think group fitness is okay. The only way I really like it is power (I just wrote powder – winterrrrr come back!) yoga. I’ve taken a few abs & arms classes and zumba a few times and they were fun, but nothing earthshattering.
Hope you feel better soon! I am kind of ambivalent when it comes to group fitness classes. I guess yoga counts, but other than that I haven’t found one I loved. As of right now, I don’t even belong to a gym that offers classes (heeeey planet fitness!).
ohh youre gonna be sore today. But in a “that kicked my ass with soo many reps” way.
p.s.
I like artic zero but it taste super icy. like frozen whey protein shake. haha. still good, just not my favorite.
I LOVE BodyPump … I actually love anything and everything by Les Mills. I was in training to be a BodyFlow instructor before finding out where I am moving doesn’t have Les Mills. SAD.
I love Pump for a workout shake-up.
you’re sick as a dog and go to bodypump?! you’re crazy girl. ;) i hope you feel better soon.
i personally really enjoy group fitness classes (if the instructor is quality). they challenge me, and i like the community of people coming together because of their desire to be healthy and fit. glad you got to try out bodypump! it’s one of my favorites!
I typically dislike group fitness classes too, but go on occasion when I need some extra motivation. BodyPump however–HATE IT! Went one time a couple years ago with my sister and I looked like a complete idiot! Seriously no coordination. I also could barely walk for a week after, but weights are not my forte! Lol Much respect to those who pump :) Happy lifting!
I love Body Pump too, as Sarah from The Healthy Diva said its a great intro into weight lifting and that is where I caught the bug for strength training, as I noticed how toned I was getting from doing the class a couple of times a week, I decided to find something else to do as I couldn’t get to more BP classes due to work schedule. I am now starting “New Rules of Lifting for Women” and really love it.
Hope you are feeling better soon.
We are like complete opposites! I went to Bodypump religiously 4 times a week for 3 years straight. I started Live Fit in January and have completely abandoned my beloved Bodypump since then. I do miss it but I know Live Fit has definitely helped increase muscle mass in all of my muscles. I will go back to Bodypump occasionally after Live Fit is over in addition to lifting heavy on my own.
BWT – Phase 3 started for me Monday and it is kicking my butt. I couldn’t do the 30 minute sprints yesterday because my legs were still screaming from Monday’s leg workout.
Hope you’re feeling better, girl! I am likely the last person on the planet to try Body Pump. I’ve been majorly chicken, even after hearing friends rave about it. I just found out this morning, though, that my bootcamp trainer teachers BP… so… maybe it’s time. P.S. Your mother is 100% rad. Goodness gracious!
i love body pump! i wish we still had our gym membership because i really miss it. it’s just too $ now.
i hope you’re feeling better!!
you and your clones.. I mean fam.. are too cute. and I’m glad you finally tried bodypump! I was obbbbsessed with it in college, but haven’t belonged to a gym that has it since. some days I miss it, but I much prefer not doing (generally) the same exact thing every class.
p.s. my mama would kill for your mama’s guns.
p.p.s. GET BETTER. did you know strawberries have more vitamin c than oranges? get those strawbs in yo body now.
I am a pump and bodycombat devotee. I just increased my weights last night, and of COURSE that’s the night they roll out a new sequence. dammit. I feel it for sure.
Hope you’re feeling better soon! I am VERY impressed by your adventures – especially since you were sick!
Get well soon and if you like those pizza chips, the Enjoy Life brand sent me some chips to review and give away called Plentils. They are made from lentils, they don’t taste healthy…they are my new fave chip!! They have a Margherita Pizza flavor that is AWESOME!
I hope you feel better soon!! Being sick is NO fun.
Those chips look so good!! Protein chips? Count me in!!!
I use to LOVE body pump! I don’t go to the gym anymore, glad you trying it for the first time!! You look so cute in your workout clothes. And your arms? HOLY they look GOOD!
I spotted your mom’s vibrams right away! I want to wear mine to my crossfit class but I feel awkward about it. Your mom is so buff… she’s just awesome.
I do like bodypump but ever since I quit a conventional gym, I can’t go anymore. I just do bodyrock or other videos at home and crossfit classes.
I’m surprised your naughty boy Randy didn’t dive into that plate on the floor
So sorry to hear about your sick day! :( Wow…you’ve had a rough go of it lately. Sorry, J.
As far as the adventures, I am in to join as soon as I blog again! …maybe over the weekend?! ;) Hopefully I can get a post up soon post-Vegas adventures. I am exactly the same as you as far as BodyPump and/or group fitness, but when I finally went (recently) it was great! Such a different burn because it was something I didn’t normally do (different format) and I loved the group element of it even though I usually prefer working out solo. A great reminder to me that I should do more classes!
Hope today you feel better and it’s a good day for you in some fun ways. :)
Hope you get better soon! When I have a sore throat I usually have a tuddi (or however you spell it!). Hot water. lemon juice and whiskey… Puts me right to sleep and really helps my throat :)
Your mum is FIT!
I forgot, where do you get the Artic zero frozen treats?
Smith’s Marketplace or Sunflower Market–they both carry it!
Never tried body pump and it isn’t likely to happen anytime soon because of my wrists! The tendonitis may be healed but my wrists are still floppy and weak. I’m almost able to hold up my 10c brita with one hand. Almost. <–HUGE improvement from a couple months ago.
As for group ex, I love it…most of the time. It really depends on the teacher. I need someone stronger/faster/more energetic than me so that I have a reason to push myself. Working out solo bores me, although that may be because I get enough alone time in other parts of my life…
I just tried Body Pump this month. I went twice and hated it. I have gotten into barre method (Physique 57) DVDs and so have kind of given up my rotation of upper body DVDs and I feel like I’ve lost muscle mass. I don’t know why I hated the class because I love Jazzercise and especially the Body Sculpt part of that class. I think it just felt too “Gym-rat” instead of graceful and fun. I looked around and thought I’d rather have a strong yoga body, not one of these. Anyway I came home yesterday morning from class feeling like a real failure for deciding to quit but I ordered some new DVDs and am hoping to refresh my at home workouts.
Love group fitness! I love taking classes because I am pushed harder and I learn new moves…I love teaching it even more because I love helping people achieve their fitness goals- and I like to be in charge of planks and pushups! ;)
I have not yet tried body pump but I really want to!
I like group fitness, as long as its a good instructor. The instructor makes it.
Never tried body pump because all of the classes I’ve tried (other than yoga) were a little annoying to me. I know that sounds terrible but I just like to do my own thing :)
We do a cup of hot water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a heaping tablespoon of honey for sore throats. It’s the only thing that allows my husband to sing if he has a sore throat :) Feel better!
You do more when you’re sick than I do healthy! wow! I love body pump but my small town doesn’t have a Gold’s.
I try to do something similar with my HIIT classes. Burn baby burn!
I LOVE YOUR PUPS!
