wins & losses.

in family time,meals,product review

win: i successfully made non-utah scones for my first time last night.

to me (and probably every other utahn and idahoans) these are scones. to the rest of the world, THESE are. i had all the ingredients on hand, so i figured making ina’s cranberry orange scones would be the perfect activity at 10:30 PM on a sunday night.. right?

IMG 3974

a little messy, but flour on the ol’ macbook never hurt anyone (or did it?)

IMG 3975

i followed the recipe almost exactly, except i used whole milk instead of cream and salted butter instead of unsalted.

IMG 3977

the recipe made 18 cranberry orange pillows of delight…

IMG 3981

these were too easy to make. it’s dangerous.

loss: these were in no way, shape, or form healthy.

but that did not stop me from eating one hot from the oven.

IMG 3982

win: i unloaded them all at the office, so i stuck to eating just one delicious (albeit unhealthy) scone.

i have big plans to make a healthy version soon.

loss: monday mornings at work are real stressful.

enough said.

win: mornings are better when celebrating national food holidays!

today was national spinach day and i celebrated with a morning juice made in the vitamix.. it may have been my new favorite blend!  no photo because i really don’t have time for that on monday mornings (or any mornings, i am always in a hurry & running late) but it had spinach, cucumber, celery, grapes, and an orange.

loss: my boss calls my juice throw up every morning.

it bothers me.

win: i got my car back today!

it was at the body shop for a week. i missed it! i am stoked to have it dent-free. it’s the way to be.

loss: i need new tires.

grumble. after spending nearly a grand on the car repairs and another $800 on replacing our fence that blew over last week, tires are the last thing i want to pay for. but i should not complain, at least i have a job.

win: speaking of my job, i actually left work on time today! (i get off at 3 on monday but rarely leave on time) which meant i got to the gym before all the annoying muscle heads.

muscle head infestation starts around 5 PM and goes til about 8 PM. it’s always PACKED and there is no way to get to all the equipment i need. today i got to the gym at 4 and did this phase 2 livefit workout (triceps, biceps, abs) followed by 10 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minutes on the treadmill.

double win: i upped my weight on a few triceps exercises.

muscles are rad. muscles are sexy.

loss: i didn’t stretch after my workout.

ugh. i never do. someone make me! seriously.

win: i recently got a whole bunch of protein snacks in the mail!

IMG 3726

my friend tiff (aka carbzilla) turned me onto a website that sells a plethora of protein packed items. some of the stuff is sketch, but lots of things are legit. i snagged the pretzels that tiff recommended and also picked up a few kinds of chips, crackers, cookies, and cereal.

the pretzels are DELICIOUS.

IMG 3733

each bag is 120 calories, 3g fat, 11g carbs, 12g protein, and 4g fiber. yes, for real.

loss: the cereal is the grossest thing i have tasted in a long time.

it looked promising…

IMG 3731IMG 3729

HOLY CRAP IT IS SO GROSS. i took one bite and literally spit it onto the floor. what a huge waste of money. total, total loss. live and learn.

win: greek salads for dinner! and i found whole wheat couscous at sunflower market.

IMG 3997

this salad was giant. i grabbed my chapstick for size reference.

IMG 4005

it had spinach (yes i celebrated the holiday twice today!), romaine, red and yellow bell pepper, cucumber, marinated chicken (recipe here), balsamic couscous, tzatziki (recipe here), and balsamic dressing. perfect. well, it was missing hummus, but i was too lazy to make any.

loss: i usually eat some chocolate covered espresso beans after dinner and today i ran OUT.

NewImage

okay, okay, that is probably actually a win. really, i have to be honest here. the handfuls were happening way too often for my own good.

win: i got to see my cousin curt for the first time in over a decade!

IMG 4010

curt and his son grant were driving through salt lake city, so they decided to stop in at momma b’s and stay the night. it’s hard to believe that i hadn’t seen him in over ten years–we don’t see a lot of our extended family, but we sure do love them! it was great to catch up and hear his awesome stories about being a pilot. eeeep, that job would be too scary for me.

loss: this is the best post i could come up with tonight.

i know i took the lazy way out, but hey.. it was quite the monday. and now it’s time for bed.

Qs~

1. a win from your day?

2. a loss from your day?

xo. janetha g.

p.s. one more win: the winner of the nuts about granola giveaway is #52, ashley s. marshall picked the random number, so you can thank him.

Kelly @ No Sugar Sweet Life March 26, 2012 at 10:16 pm

Win: we closed/refinanced our house tonight, saving us over $100k in interest (I’m going to try not to spend it all in one place!

Loss: 19 month old Babycakes pooped on the bathroom floor right before getting into the bathtub. (waaaaaaay tmi, I know…but it was that kind of night!).

Win: at least she didn’t poop IN the bath. That would’ve been worse.

Carly March 26, 2012 at 10:24 pm

Loss: Lack of sleep, frustrating client, and a staff meeting an hour drive through rushhour away. Boo Mondays.

Win: My man was home first for the first time….ever. So dinner was made when I got home. It’s all about the little things.

Marisa March 26, 2012 at 10:59 pm

Loss:Girls had warts removed. Ouch!
Win: Golden Spoon for bravery!
Also a loss: Not seeing Curt & Grant
Win: Your blog to give me the report.

Kris March 26, 2012 at 11:01 pm

win: my dad feels good today, and we had a nice visit, he told me jokes. he is so awesome.

loss: my bp is still crazy high. I’m still high on ativan. :( (win?)

Ellen Clifford March 26, 2012 at 11:19 pm

Win: ballet class
Loss: made my once a month-ish Whole Foods trip I make for certain items like chia seeds and they were out of most of the stuff I wanted

elaine c. March 26, 2012 at 11:33 pm

win: i got a call at 8pm saying that i got the night off work tonight!

loss: i slept all day so i could go to work tonight…

i was sick all last week during my week off and tonight would’ve been my “monday”, so overall it’s a WIN because i’m thankful for the extra night to rest :)

Tasha - The Clean Eating Mama March 27, 2012 at 12:17 am

Hooray for spinach day!

WIN: Movie night with my little man!

LOSS: Weighing myself today… must get back to the gym! And eating more spinach! ;)

Sierra March 27, 2012 at 1:28 am

I got my car back yesterday too from “Dent Magic” …a definite win!

Loss…I ate a whole bar of chocolate last night. Who does that?

My mom is a scone master…she puts the butter and the dry mixture in the food processor and makes little bits…apparently this adds to the flakey texture. I dunno, but hers are amazing. Lots of work, but worth it.

Erica March 27, 2012 at 3:56 am

Those scones look like a major win!! As do the greek salads. My win from yesterday:got my hair done and taught a jammin pump class! Loss: hmmm ? Yesterday was a good one

Michelle (Better with Berries) March 27, 2012 at 4:42 am

Win: I survived the first day back from Spring Break. And I did an awesome workout after school – usually if I don’t do it in the morning, it never happens!

Loss: It was a super long day.

Love the big salad – I always think of Elaine on Seinfeld every time I make a giant salad.

Lauren March 27, 2012 at 4:43 am

Okay I eat chocolate covered espresso beans after lunch and dinner almost every day. It’s the perfect dessert. :) By the way, your chicken salad looks phenomenal. I absolutely love adding quinoa or cous cous to my salads. So much dimension!

Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon March 27, 2012 at 4:53 am

Those scones look so so good!!!
Let’s see….

My win: I made the decision to go on an impromptu trip to NYC next weekend and am SO excited!
My loss: Vermont has turned into a wind machine. The wind kept knocking my ear buds out of my ears yesterday and then literally blew me off the sidewalk!

cathy@1970kikiproject March 27, 2012 at 5:11 am

a gross and nasty tasting cereal??? say it ain’t so! i would have thought that to be an oxymoronic combination of words!
i actually really like your wins and losses idea – not a copout at all! glad there are lots of wins included in your day.
yesterday i scored an unbelievably great deal on two pairs of running tights (win!) but winter’s chilly temps returned (boo) – but it was a great day overall!

Maryea {Happy Healthy Mama} March 27, 2012 at 5:35 am

I laughed picturing you spitting the cereal on the floor. :-)

Win: Baby had 2 2 hr naps yesterday!
Loss: He was up for the day at 6am today….

Hope @ With A Side Of Hope March 27, 2012 at 6:00 am

Lindsay @ The Lean Green Bean March 27, 2012 at 6:36 am

ugh i am THE WORST at stretching! i hate it

PBJenny March 27, 2012 at 6:43 am

cereal with less than 10g of carbs? That’s immoral. Ah well, you live your learn :)

Linda March 27, 2012 at 6:44 am

Win: Went to the gym before work
Loss: Didn’t sort through my papers and email

Jessica March 27, 2012 at 7:00 am

win: got to leave work at 3
loss: so I could take my puppy to the vet to find out he has wormies. Blech :(

Coco March 27, 2012 at 7:06 am

The pretzels sounds great- I don’t really eat them anymore (well the normal ones) because I can’t control myself and the bag will disappear.. I really like pretzels and sliced dill pickles together.. mmm like a mini sammich.. The cereal is a huge bummer- how much does this stuff cost? Maybe you could get a refund? And yes- scones are not so healthy.. but they are so amazing..

Leah @ Chocolate and Wild Air March 27, 2012 at 7:06 am

Win? Successful outside run!
Loss? Not-so-successful battle with insomnia

Lisa March 27, 2012 at 7:13 am

Win: getting an unexpected substantial tax refund
Loss: got a UTI

katie @KatieDid March 27, 2012 at 7:14 am

hoping to beat out those “muscle heads” at the gym today too. I can’t stand how crowded it gets after 4pm, it seriously stresses me out!

betty March 27, 2012 at 7:19 am

win: the weather was nice enough when i got off work, i decided to clean my own car instead of having it detailed. saving money FTW.

loss: scout peed all over his crate (dog bed in the crate) after i had just washed it (and him) the night before. ugh.. do you need another basset?

Jen @nutcaseinpoint March 27, 2012 at 7:26 am

Win: spinach smoothie for national spinach day

Loss: cookie after dinner (trying to avoid sweets during the week)

(second) Win: had a great workout!

Dani March 27, 2012 at 7:27 am

WIN: Saw the Hunger Games in an non-crowded theater! With Mint M&Ms!
LOSS: Got an bad haircut :( Oh well, it will grow back!

If you are looking for good tasting cereals, Cascadian Farm makes an “organic” cinnamon toast crunch rip-off, and it is amazing. http://cascadianfarm.com/products/product_detail.aspx?cat=8&upc=0-21908-28283-1

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 9:35 am

Oh not to worry, I don’t have a problem finding good tasting cereal, actually it is my favorite food and I have NEVER come across one I don’t like! Until now. I was intrigued because of the high protein content and low carb content.. but it was really too good to be true–it was so gross.

On another note, I love Cascadian Farm cereals!! They are a sponsor for the blogger retreat I am hosting in May!

xo

Carbzilla March 27, 2012 at 7:32 am

Lol – such a bummer about the cereal. Maybe you can bake it into rice krispie treats? Glad you like the pretzels. I have to have them with water cuz they’re so dry, but I swear the extra protein has helped me drop a few lbs. I do like their bars too (Wonderslim?). They only have 3 WW points as opposed to the 5-7 that most bars do. (not a big fan of their smoothie/puddings but they’ll make a good smoothie addition or emergency dessert)

Win: finally stopped gaining weight
Loss: had to clean up mega cat barf last night. Ooog.

emily March 27, 2012 at 7:38 am

Loss: I couldn’t make it to yoga class last night because I had a required meeting for school. On a Monday night. After a full day of work. Ugh.
Win: I needed a rest day anyway, and I didn’t have to feel guilty about it.

I don’t understand *not* stretching. It feels SO good! But maybe that’s my years of ballet talking. No wonder I love yoga so much… and I definitely wouldn’t stretch as much if it wasn’t built in to my workout in yoga class.

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning March 27, 2012 at 7:50 am

Thanks for sharing that site- yet another thing that’s going to suck of my productivity today. :) I would have totally ordered the same cereal you did… I wonder if the Snackergy granola is any good? Or the BariWise cereal? Both have decent “ratings,” but then again- so did the cereal that you bought.
My win yesterday: getting a great workout in before going to work.
Loss: Getting rear-ended on the way home because I had to rapidly stop for an ambulance blazing through an intersection. Luckily it didn’t do any damage to either car.

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 9:33 am

I know, you would think that by the ratings it would be good. But the fake sugary flavor was TOO horrible. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t that.

Glad you are OK!!!

Errign March 27, 2012 at 7:53 am

I’ll do yesterday:

Win: my class was canceled.
Loss: I trekked all the way over to campus with wind gusts of 30 mph to find out that class was canceled. :)

kristen March 27, 2012 at 8:07 am

win – it was sunny and I really enjoyed the sun coming through my window as I was working.

loss – i was EXHAUSTED. thought about having a nap after work but figured that would mean not being able to sleep at night, so i went to bed early instead. hoping that will help me feel a little more human the rest of the week.

Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries March 27, 2012 at 8:34 am

that’s funny that you mentioned the difference between utah’s scones vs. the rest of the world’s scones… when i first moved here 3 or so years ago, i was SO excited to go to sconecutter to try out what i thought to be a scone. we got there and i was so confused because they were NOT scones (at least as i had known them).

Lauren @ Call Me Mrs. Rapp March 27, 2012 at 8:44 am

Win: I made it to the gym for some serious cardio if though I really wasn’t in the mood…AND I celebrated National Spinach Day twice and ended up with a super yummy pasta bowl, filled with roasted veggies and chicken sausage.

Loss: I didn’t work on report cards, which means I’ll be busy all night because they’re due tomorrow. Wah wahhhh.

PS: I enjoyed this post – and it wasn’t lazy! :)

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 9:33 am

Thank you!

the delicate place March 27, 2012 at 8:46 am

you are the late night baking queen! stoners would love you! yeah i drink a hemp shake every morning and i get all sorts of comments on the color :( whatever, i’m proud of my bod and i’ll eat like that to keep it! i never stretch either ever. well unless i force yoga upon myself once-twice weekly. it’s hard and i only last about 20 mins before i give up.

today’s win: sunshine
loss: hard day at work and not enough sleep!

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 9:32 am

Stoners DO love me! Fact.

emily (a nutritionist eats) March 27, 2012 at 8:56 am

win- my birthday today (so that always means a good day)!
loss – still don’t know what to do tonight to celebrate! (lame loss, I know!)

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 9:32 am

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Life's a Bowl March 27, 2012 at 9:04 am

Monday’s win: wearing my new Nike sneakers :D OR making pizzadillas!
Loss: not wearing my new sneakers to run, rather did a weight workout OR not knowing it was national spinach day and neglected to have a stupendous spinach salad…

Destini March 27, 2012 at 9:27 am

Sunday I walked out to my car to go grocery shopping and saw the tire extremely low in air….closer inspection I got a nail in my tire..ON THE SIDE. And as it was Sunday, my usual tire place was closed. So I went to Canadian Tire(if you don’t know what Canadian Tire is, its a automotive home housewares kinda store, always great kitchen appliance sales). Well because they didn’t have my normal tires, I got the privilege of buying two! Was a wonderful way to start my day! I have a love/hate relationship with cars.

I wish I could get to the gym before 5pm! Your completely right, muscle man creepers in the weight rooms. Every squat I do I feel all the eyes on my butt. Lovely :)

Nicole C March 27, 2012 at 9:34 am

Win: 2 wins today. #1 – I ran my fastest time on the treadmill this year. #2 Ben got a secret video of Roxy destroying a toy, my little doxie never ever plays with toys and he caught her. I love it!

Loss: I am putting together a pre-qual package to get on Chevron Energy Solutions bid list, with zero help from “co-workers”. :/

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 9:50 am

Good job on the run!

Nicole M. March 27, 2012 at 9:44 am

Have you tired Kashi Golean cereal? It’s got 13g of protein. New addiction!

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 9:49 am

I eat a box a week! Love that stuff.

Bria March 27, 2012 at 9:47 am

A thought on stretching…do it between sets of exercises. That way it’s integrated into your routine. Plus, this makes any downtime (such as time spent waiting on equipment) productive.

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 9:49 am

I already do that! So I guess I should give myself a little credit, eh?

Bria March 28, 2012 at 6:35 am

Yeah, definitely. That’s better than nothing!

Jess March 27, 2012 at 9:57 am

Freaking LOVE scones. The best ones I’ve made recently were based on a Chobani recipe — I made blueberry ones and they were amazing! Your post reminded me that I NEED NEED NEED to dig up that recipe and make them again! drool.

Claire @ Live and Love to Eat March 27, 2012 at 10:13 am

Those protein pretzels have some great stats! Win from yesterday: 545 am spin class + upper body workout. Loss: dead tired by 10 pm!

Paige March 27, 2012 at 10:24 am

UGH. Musclehead infestation blows. I train most of my evening clients from 4-7 and from 5-7, I have to dodge a pack of at LEAST 5 men, slowly meandering around the gym in a pack, one after another doing a set of curls. They think they RUN the place.

Alta March 27, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Umm, so those Utah scones are what we Southerners call beignets. Or at least what I’d call beignets. But whatever, they’re fried dough which is delicious. And these regular scones look amazing too. So does that salad!

Lisa March 27, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Win: No work!!
Loss: I spilt my coffee on my clothes, boo to wasted coffee
I love the volume of your salad! It looks tasty, and that website looks interesting, I’ll have a view at it.

Tamizn March 27, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Win: I got to do some baking, first time in ages!

Loss: My back is still very SORE

I love this post x x

Calee (@chimes) March 27, 2012 at 1:47 pm

First — it bothers ME that your boss calls your juice “throw up”. I get odd looks from the people in my office with my food choices, but nobody would have the gall to say something like that.

Win from Monday: GETTING BARNEY TO GO ON A WALK. I’m pretty sure I commented on your post about Randy and mentioned the issues we have with Barney walking. He walked 4 miles — with only one ridiculous stop. I think I figured out his issue: He thinks he’s going to have to poo on his walk, and is somehow embarrassed about it, so he doesn’t want to go (even if he poos before). Once he has a poo during the walk, he’s fine and starts to enjoy his time. Before the pooing, I’m practically (or literally) dragging him.

Loss from Monday: Breaking up with my dentist. I love my dentist. And he was just down the street from my old job in Des Moines, but I don’t work in Des Moines anymore, and to go to the dentist there would require a half a day vacation. Sooo … time for a new dentist.

Hope you’re having a great Tuesday!

Janetha March 27, 2012 at 2:22 pm

Four miles with those little legs?! That is incredible!

Katie @ Nutrition in a Peanut Shell March 27, 2012 at 2:09 pm

If flour on the laptop= bad, I’m screwed. I think I have more food on this thing than I do on in my fridge.
