sliding sideways on sunday.

in fun with friends,groceries

hey guys!

how was your weekend? did it fly by for anyone else, or just me?  i bet mine went by super fast for me due to the fact that i slept until 2:30 PM on saturday. yep.

what, that’s not normal for you? i guess i was just really tired. opting to sleep until the late afternoon is just one of the many reasons i have dogs instead of kids. in fact, penny and randy slept in with me and loved it.

i managed to wake up at a decent hour today–8:45 AM. i had places to be and people to see.

i had some eggs with ketchup and a couple pieces of toast with peanut butter and cherry jam, then brewed a mug of coffee for the road. i swooped by kristen’s and jessica’s houses to pick them up and we headed to park city for some sunday snowboarding at the canyons.

IMG 6011

it snowed real hard here in utah yesterday, which made for excellent snowboarding conditions today. to make matters even better, the sun was shining and the air was calm.. blue skies and no wind make for a fabulous day at the resort.

IMG 6012IMG 6013

the snow was amazing! i love snowboarding under any circumstances, but i especially love snowboarding in powder. i didn’t think that would be happening since it’s been such a crappy winter, but mother nature proved me wrong and it was a great powder day.

IMG 6025

we took a pit stop to pee, eat cookies & cocoa, and post photos to various social media platforms. priorities, folks.

IMG 6043

then it was back on the lifts for a couple more runs.

IMG 6047

i couldn’t have asked for better conditions.

IMG 6027

IMG 6028

or better company, of course!

IMG 6023

after four or five hours of riding, we headed down the mountain. we were super hungry and decided to stop at ahh sushi/o’shucks in jeremy ranch.

IMG 9478

unfortunately, the sushi bar wasn’t open for another hour so we had to order from the o’shucks menu. it looked promising.

IMG 9476

we placed our orders and snacked on peanuts while waiting for our food. i also used this time to try out a fishtail braid because kristen taught me how to do one. i need practice. a lot of it.

IMG 9483IMG 9485

i ordered the ahí ahh! salad.

IMG 9486

it looks way better than it was… like, WAY better. it was really bland and “meh”. bummer.

IMG 9488

jessica got the fish & chips and kristen got the philly cheesesteak. they were both very unimpressed with their food. it wasn’t just subpar.. it was bad.  we spent a good chunk of the drive home talking about how disappointed we were that we just ate some super overpriced, crappy food. i am glad that it’s not just me that gets so worked up about wanting to find delicious food when eating out. oh well, lesson learned. and if you are local–learn from our mistake! don’t go to o’shucks for food.. just go for beer. and peanuts. and fishtail braid lessons.

i dropped the ladies off and headed straight to whole foods to get my grocery shopping done for the week. i usually don’t do my weekly shopping there because, let’s face it, it’s super expensive. but we want pizza this week and whole foods has the best pizza dough! plus, i was already in salt lake and whole foods was on the way home. it was probably a big mistake, because i wandered the aisles for over an hour and ended up buying a bunch of stuff i honestly didn’t need. grocery shopping is definitely one of my weaknesses.. but hey, it’s better than some of my old vices, right? i am addicted to buying overpriced groceries.. it could definitely be worse.

here a few of my favorite things to buy when at whole foods:

IMG 9497

  • nonfat whipped cream.. no sugar added, either!
  • multigrain pizza dough.. like i said above, it’s the best. although i probably should try making my own dough one of these days…
  • kind bars. they were on sale 4 for $5.
  • pacific low sodium creamy tomato soup. it’s my favorite packaged tomato soup around.
  • single-serving protein powders that i have never tried and really don’t need.. but somehow convince myself that i NEED to try them.

on the upside, chobani was actually on sale for a buck apiece. the money saved right there made up for all the frivolous items i bought. that’s my story and i’m sticking to it.

as far as the rest of my weekend goes.. it was pretty mellow.

marshall & i stayed in with the pups on friday night. i was absolutely exhausted from the work week and i even skipped my workout on friday. sometimes you just have to listen to your body and my body was saying NO GYM TODAY.  then, like i said earlier, i slept in WAY late on saturday–i got over 12 hours of sleep! i must have needed it. despite the super late sleep in, i still got a lot done. we had the entire house deep cleaned by 4:30! the laundry folding is another story, though. worst chore ever.

after cleaning, i made it to the gym for a back/biceps/abs workout but skipped the 30 minute sprints that were on the agenda. my reason for this was that my vibram 5 fingers were in the washer, so i had to wear regular shoes to the gym. regular shoes are fine for lifting, but if i am going to sprint.. i need my vibrams. anything else makes my knees hurt. although, i was secretly happy i couldn’t do the sprints. i hate cardio.

saturday night we went out for my step MIL’s birthday dinner. we headed to texas roadhouse. if you’ve ever been there, you know it’s a ridiculously dim lit restaurant so i skipped the food photography. nobody wants to see crappy, dark photos of salmon, right? of course, right. saturday night was spent trying to teach momma b to navigate pinterest. i think she’s got the hang of it! if you want to follow her, click here.  oh! and i also perfected my recipe for protein cheesecakes, i’ll be posting it this week sometime.

well, that’s my weekend in a nutshell! i am going to go make some spaghetti & asparagus for dinner. top sirloin was on sale at whole foods so it’ll be a nice change from ground turkey. the rest of the week’s dinners look like this:

should be good! what are you having?

Kyle @ Getting Better and Better January 22, 2012 at 8:39 pm

Except for your restaurant fiasco, I’m capital J, Jealous of your mountain adventure, though I ski, not board….someday maybe.

Jessiker January 22, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Such an amazing day! failed lunches and all..Got all worked up again about it after reading your blog. haha. OH well better luck next time? Love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu xoxoxo

Heidi Nicole January 22, 2012 at 8:52 pm

Ahhh…powder! Breck and Keystone finally snow this week too! We were up there on Friday and the powder was freaking amazing! First bout of powder we’ve had all season – although I don’t think I’m prepared to say it was worth the wait!

Good luck with the fishtail braid…before long you’ll be whipping up a french fishtail! I’ve had crazy long hair for way too long…. ;)

Amanda January 22, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Protein cheesecakes! I cannot wait for the recipe. I am obsessed with cheesecake. I actually made some sugar-free cheesecake pudding today because I am lazy and it sounded good.

I get lost in Whole Foods. We go once a month or so because it can really add up. Chobani for a buck is always good. It was the same at Target so we stocked up.

I want to snowboard. BAD!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:15 am

You need to come to Utah! Also.. the cheesecake is delicious and doesn’t have any sugar added (just xylitol) so you’ll dig it, I am sure!

Eliza January 22, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Ah, Janetha! I’ll be blaming you when I move to the mountainous region of the country. Looks SO pretty! Def. a bummer about the food, but there is no way that could put a damper on such a beautiful day!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:17 am

When you move there, call me and I will come visit ;)

Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries January 22, 2012 at 9:03 pm

ahh i’m jealous you went up to the slopes! i’m sure it was just amazing. it was an absolutely gorgeous day! and hey, our week’s menu includes your leftover taco soup and ham and cheese paninis too! ;)

Heather (Heather's Dish) January 22, 2012 at 9:47 pm

so fun! i miss going out to the mountains this year :(

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:18 am

Growing a baby is pretty important though, so it’ll be well worth it when you are romping in the snow with him next season :)

Laura January 22, 2012 at 9:48 pm

I slept in amazingly late today. I think it’s a combo from a rough week and starting a new med that causes drowsiness. We’ll see how the early morning wake ups go this week :) Glad you had a good weekend in the snow!

clueless nutrition January 22, 2012 at 10:00 pm

The snow looks beautiful! I love the Pacific soups, too. My body screamed no gym as well on Friday. Saturday and Sunday my mind screamed no gym, ugh. I’ve been thinking about purchasing five fingers per my friend’s request but haven’t made up my mind. My foot is typically wider than the average. I, too, have a bad habit of over-spending at the grocery store. The pineapple prosciutto pizza sounds delish! My lunch on Friday was pineapple, ham, and jalapeños on homemade pizza crust. YUM!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:21 am

Hate it when my mind screams that! It seems to be almost every day ;)

I have VERY wide feet. Just so ya know.

errin January 22, 2012 at 10:37 pm

dude. i’m obsessed w/ the whole foods pizza crust. i was a long-time homemade kind of gal, but bought it on a whim once and i’ll never turn back. sorry about o’shucks. i’d have warned you.

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:23 am

Ugh. Yeah. Never. Again.

Paije January 22, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Ahh I hate disappointing restaurants! 98% of the restaurants in Saskatoon are shiiiiitty so we basically always cook at home!
I am a terrible addict when it comes to overpriced foods, but you’re totally right – it could be waaay worse!
We are having homemade pizza this week, too! :)

Stefanie @TheNewHealthy January 22, 2012 at 10:49 pm

I’m kind of obsessed with buying overpriced groceries that I don’t need too. I have so many packets of random protein powders, green super foods, etc. that I have yet to try! Like you said, I could be buying something worse.

lindsay January 22, 2012 at 11:46 pm

the last time i went skiing/snowboarding i fell and damaged my tailbone. Needless to say i suck at skiiing. But i am a professional hot cocoa drink and hot tub goer.
;-)

Happy Meal planning, looks great!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:24 am

Oh, are you sponsored?!

lindsay January 23, 2012 at 9:23 am

yes, by the little company called Nestle Cafe.
;-)

Eden January 23, 2012 at 12:17 am

I miss skiing. My dad and I both have our own and we havent gone in ages. Weird about that whole tuna thing. Usually I find things taste better than they look. I dunno, I personally think I taste better than I look! ;)

And sorry Jbean, I think I’m hopeless with pinterest. But I think it makes an excellent name from an acupuncturist!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:28 am

Come to Utah and ski with me! That would be so fun.

Ali @ whatalididnext January 23, 2012 at 1:35 am

Oh my god those photos look gorgeous – you need to come and try some of our New Zealand slopes!

This weekend my husband and I let the kids fend for themselves and stayed in bed until 10am on Saturday and sunday. SO lovely depite the chaos we came out to in the kitchen when we got up.

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:28 am

I would LOVE to come there! I have some Kiwi friends who come to Utah for snowboarding and I keep telling them I will come for a visit. One day :)

Lauren January 23, 2012 at 5:14 am

You make snow boarding look so beautiful and fun. Wish I enjoyed the snow as much as you. Sounds like a lovely weekend and now I’m off to check out some of your delicious sounding recipes. :)

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:30 am

I bet if you had mountains like we do here, you’d like snow!!

Sarah January 23, 2012 at 5:45 am

I did hardly anything this weekend and it STILL flew by! Its only monday morning and i am ready for friday afternoon… sad but true!

Erica January 23, 2012 at 5:45 am

Looks like a totally gorgeous day! Glad you ladies had fun. Bummer about the terrible food. I always get irritated when we pay a lot of $$ and are unhappy with the quality. I love me some WFs. I haven’t been there in forever…its such a hole for $$ for me too. You should try the pizza crust recipe from 101 cookbooks- so easy- my fav. I do half WW half AP flour. Great menu. We’re having leftover asparagus soup tonight (was SO good), waffles one night, a chicken bake & stir fry

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:35 am

Thanks for the suggestion on the dough recipe. I am afraid of yeast, but I think I should give it a shot. Also, I need to make some asparagus soup! Amazing!

Krissie J @ A Philly Nerd Girl January 23, 2012 at 5:58 am

I keep religiously checking the 10 Day forecast for Sugarloaf Maine and it looks like there’s a ton of snow coming for our trip!! I may not be as skilled as you, but fresh pow is way better than the icy crap we get here in PA! So jealous of your awesome boarding day!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:36 am

I am jealous of your trip! You are going to have a blast. Please come to Utah :)

Krissie J @ A Philly Nerd Girl January 23, 2012 at 12:21 pm

I definitely want to!!! I just opened up Southwest.com to look at plane tickets. LOL. I keep putting off visiting people and taking trips and I think it’s time to just DO IT! :)

Tara Burner January 23, 2012 at 6:05 am

looks like an awesome weekend!

Lee January 23, 2012 at 6:26 am

That’s nice that your dogs let you sleep. Murphy will put his face in my face until I open my eyes. Then he’ll bark softly and if I ignore him, he’ll start to bark louder. It’s kind of funny when it’s not annoying!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:44 am

That’s cute! They got up for awhile with Marshall, he went to the gym and they came back to bed. Then when they needed to go out, they used the dog door. Such a beautiful invention, haha.

Lauren @ What Lauren Likes January 23, 2012 at 6:38 am

Thanks! It’s super warm.

sorry the restaurant was poopy, but yay for WF!! I plan on going today! :D

happy Monday, beautiful Janetha!

Katie January 23, 2012 at 6:44 am

I’m currently making your chicken & brown rice soup recipe for tonight! Can’t wait to try!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:47 am

Mmmm I hope you like it!

Katie January 23, 2012 at 11:01 am

I love it…I made it a little different though because I don’t have time between work and classes, so I threw anything in the crock pot (minus the oil) turned out great! At the end to my separate bowl I put in a little Sriracha hot sauce to add a bit of spice!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 11:28 am

Awesome, I will have to try it out in the crock pot!

Heather Montgomery January 23, 2012 at 7:15 am

how beautiful! We def. don’t have snow… it was 75 degrees and 98% humidity and fog on my run yesterday. I love the look of snow like that, so peaceful!

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:49 am

That is just crazy to me! I am heading to Mexico soon, though, and can’t wait for humidity. I love it!

Life's a Bowl January 23, 2012 at 7:31 am

Creamy tomato soup and a grilled cheese always makes me reminisce on my childhood- such a delic classic!

P.S. Jealous of your snow adventures! I started skiing when I was 3 and my family would go to CO twice a year [winter and spring]- it was my dad’s fave thing to do- but once I started playing sports year-round we never had time… My fiance has never been but has skateboarded for 15 years so he’s dying to try snowboarding- I told him he’s gonna have a sore butt :P

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:10 am

Skateboarding and snowboarding are definitely nothing alike, but if you ask me.. skateboarding is WAY harder, so I bet he’d be great at it!

kayleigh January 23, 2012 at 7:40 am

you can wash 5 fingers?!?!? please enlighten me before my feet smell. haha

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 8:09 am

Oh, yes! If you didn’t, they’d be so rank!! I just throw them in my washer with my load of towels.. air dry. I wash them about every two weeks.

Jessica @ Stylish Stealthy and Healthy January 23, 2012 at 9:07 am

I will never snowboard ever again, but every time I see someone else do it I get a little twinge of jealousy that I suck so hard at it. I even used to skate! So lame.
And I think when you sleep that long your body just needs it, so with it :)

Kait January 23, 2012 at 10:01 am

“the laundry folding is another story, though. worst chore ever.”

TRUE STORY! I have no shame in admitting that I still bring laundry home. My mom is the best clothing folder ever…as in things don’t get wrinkled when she folds.

Of course, I blame it on the fact that the one washer/drier in my apt complex is from 1970 and it would take me about 3 loads in there to do 1 load at home…and yes this sometimes means I go 6 weeks without doing laundry (except hand-washing workout clothes) but hey…a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

And avoiding laundry folding is definitely a gotta. ;)

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 10:02 am

That’s it. I am forwarding your comment to my mom.

Kait January 23, 2012 at 2:22 pm

As long as Momma B doesn’t blame me when you start showing up with your laundry.

I also live 2 hours from home, just FYI.

Heather @ Better With Veggies January 23, 2012 at 10:04 am

Love the boarding pics!! Looks like a gorgeous day in the mountains! I have no idea what is on our menu for the week, I didn’t do my normal meal planning or grocery shopping this weekend. =)

Katie January 23, 2012 at 10:51 am

That sky is BEAUTIFUL! Glad you had fun on the mountain – sorry about the meh restaurant food. I stinking hate that.

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning January 23, 2012 at 11:03 am

I’m not judging at all- but I can not believe you can sleep in til 2:30 pm!! I can’t sleep in past 7:30, not matter how late I’m out (which is why I don’t stay out late!). You must be an excellent sleeper and I am jealous!
Speaking of jealous, I showed my husband a pic you posted on Facebook of Park City and he was GREEN with envy. He loves snowboarding there, which only happens every few years.
And bummer about the food at the restaurant! There is nothing that sucks more than a crappy meal! Judging by the decor, and menu, I would have had high hopes! And how do you screw up an ahi tuna salad? Ugh. I love that you guys talked about how bad it was the whole way home- definitely been there!
Boo to the weekend being over, but at least you’ve got an awesome trip coming up!

Laura (LunaChickRuns) January 23, 2012 at 11:23 am

The powder day looked awesome! I am so excited for my trip to CO next month.

I can’t wait for dinner tonight because I have mexican leftovers from the weekend that I will be making into a huge fajita salad!

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather January 23, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Looks like perfect snowboarding weather!!!! The sun and pretty white snow and powder, ahhh love it! This winter I think I’m trading snowboarding for snowshoeing, cause of the belly and all. Not as fun, but still out in the snow :)

And I never can sleep in as late as you did, but that sounds pretty rad. Hope your week goes well lady!

Roz@weightingfor50 January 23, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Oh Janetha. The mountain pics are GORGEOUS!!!!! I don’t ski or board (I am apparently fearful and uncoordinated, which makes for a wicked combination when careening down a mountain. :) ) but I could sure get into some “apres ski” events in a setting like that. Have a wonderful Monday.

Christine @ Oatmeal Bowl January 23, 2012 at 12:19 pm

So jealous. I have always wanted to learn how to snowboard. Why I don’t go now… not sure. Looks like you had a great time. And I always love a good Ahi salad. Especially if it comes with a wasabi dressing. Yum!

Kim @ The Family Practice January 23, 2012 at 12:48 pm

Have you been to Shabu in Park City? It’s our favorite sushi place, right across the street from OShucks…. $5 rolls after 2. I’ve been there probably 10 times in the 4 months we’ve lived in Utah – its addictingly good. I’ve only been to the Oshucks in SLC not PC.

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 9:13 pm

I will have to try Shabu! We went to the OShucks in Jeremy Ranch and there is literally nothing else around it.. we didn’t want to drive up to Main since it’s Sundance and CRAZZZZY. Next time, I will check that place out! Thanks!

Melissa January 23, 2012 at 1:56 pm

stinks the food wasn’t good, especially since it looks so awesome!

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva January 23, 2012 at 1:57 pm

My theory when you go out to eat is that it should be better than something you can make at home yourself. That’s what makes it special right.
I’m giggling because grocery shopping is my weakness too…I love finding new products to try and experiment with. But I can get sucked into this time vortex and before you know it I’ve been wandering the shop for hours lol. I recently tried unsweetened coconut milk instead of almond and have really loved the change!

On the menu this week….no idea as I’ll be on vacation in melbourne. Will take some pics to document the eats though. Hope you have a good start to the week xox

Madeline@Food, Fitness, and Family January 23, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Learning how to snowboard is definitely on my fitness “to do” list! We drove thru Utah over Christmas and it was gorgeous!

the delicate place January 23, 2012 at 2:31 pm

whoa action packed! glad you got to go boarding, i like your googles :) i almost bought that protein powder packet but didn’t so you’ll have to let me know how it goes! i’m having spicy lamb meatballs, roast chicken, poached dijon salmon, & omelet dinners this week. i’m most excited about the lamb because my parents gave it to me for free from a farmer behind their house. can’t get fresher than that!

Jamie January 23, 2012 at 2:50 pm

Can you recommend a brand of whey protein powder? I look at all the different brands and get overwhelmed. I just need a basic whey protein that isn’t gross and you are the person I thought of to ask! Thanks in advance.
Jamie

Lauren January 23, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Looks like you had an amazing day! Well, except for the nasty food. That stinks. But seriously, I was reading your tweets and everything and I could tell you were loving it. You’ve made me excited to go skiing with my Girl Scout troop in a few weeks. My 3rd time ever!!

Denise January 23, 2012 at 3:44 pm

We had great powder in Breck too. It was great. May I ask why you don’t wear a helmet?

Janetha January 23, 2012 at 9:12 pm

I have never been asked that! I don’t have a good reason. I really should.. I wear a bike helmet but not a snowboarding one.

Denise January 24, 2012 at 7:29 am

Well as Lisa’s mom I think you should. I fell and wacked my head pretty good yesterday and I would have probably had a concusion if i didn’t have a helment on. I am actually borrowing Lisa’s. They are warm and comfortable and if you want to be stylish they have funny helmet covers.

Janetha January 24, 2012 at 11:52 pm

Wow, sorry to hear about your noggin’! And thanks for the push.. I do need to get one. I am not worried about style, I am just so darn claustrophobic. But that’s not a good excuse!

Christin@purplebirdblog January 23, 2012 at 4:36 pm

I too am addicted to overpriced groceries and proud of it… considering what I used to spend my money on, this is a huge improvement! ;) Plus I consider it preventative maintenance for my health, woohoo!

Felicia (Natural + Balanced) January 23, 2012 at 4:40 pm

SWEET jacket! so jealous of you! we got snow saturday and it rained all day today-i need some fresh powder asap!

The only thing I know for sure is pulled pork in the slow cooker. I got some of my favorite BBQ sauce while in Kansas City this weekend and can’t wait to use it.

I’m so jealous of your snow boarding adventures! I have never been snowboarding/skiing and it is a goal of mine to go someday :-)
