i have been pretty bad at churning out quality blog posts lately.
to be honest, i only like to blog if i have the energy and feel like blogging. a forced blog post is a blog post nobody wants to read. you can totally tell when you are reading a post that was “just for the sake of posting” and i am not that girl. plus, i blog for fun, not for my job, so a few days without anything interesting is, in fact, no big deal.
i think i get in these “i don’t wanna blog” funks every once in awhile. for example.. yesterday was an awesome day! i did a whole bunch of stuff that would have been great to blog about:
- i went to the farmers market with emily
- i had an incredible lower body workout
- i rode my bike
- i went to whole foods and sunflower market
- i searched for denim shorts for 3 hours and tried on, oh, maybe 40 pairs
- i made grilled pizza—one vegan, one not
- i ate cookies and ice cream
and guess what? i didn’t take one single, solitary photo of any of this.
oh.. wait.. i lied.. i did take some instagram photos. including this one:
but my point is this—sometimes it’s nice to do a bunch of fun things that are definitely “blog worthy” and decide to just not blog about them. sure, i am a blogger.. but i am not a professional blogger, what i am is a professional liver. i am so good at living life! someone should pay me for that.
so, instead of feeling the pressure to write about something, i just go with it and know that my blogging spunk will return shortly. i can’t stay away for long, that’s for sure.
and because they were pretty, i will show you my protein pancakes i just ate while catching up with susan’s latest post. it is pancake sunday, after all.
four protein pancakes with farmers market dried cherries added to the batter.
topped with cherry jam.
and a whole pot of kona coffee french press allllll to myself.
bliss.
in other news, i want to thank everyone for helping create a buzz about the great fundraising act!!
i appreciate the excitement and enthusiasm from all of you. this is a strong community and i am confident that the auction is going to be a huge success.
oh, and the fundraiser is already a success. several people have donated to the paypal fund for susan already! we have raised $425 so far!! remember, you can donate money directly using this link, but if you want to bid on some of the amazing items up for auction, save your money for july 25th!
please continue to blog, tweet, facebook and talk about the fundraiser. if you want to contribute an item to the auction, please contact me. i need all donation submissions by the 20th!
well, i am off to the gym to lift some weights. i am training my back today. and no, i am not going to blog about it.
Qs~
1. bloggers: when you are in a blog funk (don’t pretend like they don’t happen) do you still force yourself to post regularly, or do you just wait it out?
2. what did you have for breakfast?

Hi! Just came across your blog this morning. Yes, I get in quite a number of blog “brain freezes” and I usually just wait it out but I have forced myself to say something, but it’s not as fun when I’m not excited about it. Wow, that is a LOT of coffee! :o) I just had a double bowel (another thing I bet a lot of people do but don’t admit…I mean you finish the bowel, but then there’s still milk in the bottom…so you pour a little bit more to use up the milk) :) of fiber one cinnamon cereal with unsweetened vanilla almond milk.
Okay, I am cracking up right now because you wrote “bowel” instead on “bowl”–and so I totally thought you were talking about taking two poops in a row! It got extra funny when you said people do but don’t admit it! ahahaha.. Anyway, YES, I have like 3-4 bowls of cereal at a time. Always have to add more if there is still milk left. I will totally fess up to that!
Thanks for popping over, have a great day!! xo
haha! I totally was reading this for what it said and was a bit surprised how candid this was getting! :)
Oh my goodness…that’s classic!
Though I laughed at your being a professional “liver” today. As opposed to a “kidney”?
breakfast = watermelon and some veggies (!!!) plus crappy coffee ): Weird mood this morning!
Those pancakes look almost crepe-like…..hope you try them soon.
I thought that when I typed “liver”–hehe. I need to try the crepes AND I need to send you mail! In addition to being a professional liver, I am also a professional procrastinator ;)
HAHAHAH!!!! That’ll teach me to proofread! :) I’m glad you got a laugh out of it, and I know I just laughed pretty good too realizing how this sounds with my typo! :)
I actually just scheduled a few posts with WLW because I was finally in a blogging mood so I wanted to take advantage. I have been in a blogging funk lately too. It’s on and off. I just take the time off and blog when I want to!
I want instagram. Jealous.
Breakfast for me today was scrambled eggs, a plum and a nectarine. I can’t remember the last time I photographed breakfast!
Amen!!! We don’t need to pressure ourselves to blog about things. I didn’t have much going on this weekend so don’t have a ton to blog about for tomorrow morning’s post personally. Instead I focused on my enthusiasm over the Great Fundraising Act and that was all the inspiration (or topic) I needed.
I’m not a blogger, tried it once, didn’t quite succeed.
for breakfast I made the family buckwheat pancakes topped with cinnamon infused syrup, strawberries, blueberries & raspberries!
Good for YOU for being honest! Sometimes I don’t feel it either….and that is OKAY! But I am glad you live life so well. Sometimes I think we all need to STEP away from virtual life and REALLY live life. ya know?? :)
I actually stopped documenting my life events with photos for a while because I wanted to make a point to living them. Now, I think I’ve achieved a pretty nice picture taking balance, but I agree, it’s nice to give yourself a break to live every once in a while…or regularly. :)
I don’t blog when I’m in a funk. There’s no need to! And my favorite quote is “blog what you live – don’t live to blog.”
I take the entire weekend off from blogging so i always have fun things to talk about throughout the week and i would feel relaxed and rejuvinated on Monday!
Breaks are definitely necessary, i moved a few weeks ago and i took the entire week off, it just wasn’t worth the stress of putting out bad posts
Yummy pancakes and i LOVE your mug :)
I sometimes will take a day off from blogging, but I usually force myself to post on the second day. You’re totally right though, you can definitely tell a good post from one that’s just for the sake of posting.
I pre-write posts! That’s how I manage to do it every day. I don’t (usually) blog about my day-to-day happenings. So I could be inspired to write 5 different posts in one day, then just schedule them to go up throughout the week when I don’t feel like or don’t have the time to write. Sometimes I’ll have recipe posts sitting in my drafts for weeks that I use as a back-up when I’ve got absolutely nothing. And when all THAT fails, I make a list. Lists always work.
Hey girl! Yes, we definitely all get in funks. Sometimes I will just post nothing, sometimes I will put up a recipe (if I have something that seems worthy- if it seems too forced- I will put up nothing! Cherry jam sounds so good right now. I had some canary melon for breakfast before we went to brunch with my parents where I had an awesome biscuit and a chicken salad
I would love to contribute to the fundraiser since this has affected me personally but I don’t know what to donate! In 7th grade, a super nice boy in my grade was diagnosed with lymphoma and died a couple months later. Since I was still so young, it affected me a lot and now I always reach out when I can! He was the nicest kid ever and did NOT deserve it. Any ideas what I can donate? Does it have to be a recipe on my blog? I could donate something not on my blog for sure!
Hi there,
I hope that I speak for Janetha when I say that it can be anything! I think that the minimum bid will be $10 per item, so it can be anything from baked goods to a kitchen item or anything fitness related, or really anything that you think that like-minded people might want to buy.
Right Janetha?
Yes! That’s exactly right. Lauren, email me if you’d like to contribute.. and thanks! And thanks Deb <3
I definitely don’t post every day, and I don’t want to. I put my heart into my posts and want to make sure that I WANT to write them, not that I’m writing them out of obligation, to get more readers, etc. I would much rather have a meaningful post than just post a picture of my morning oatmeal just for something to blog.
I am all about waiting out the blog funk…I hate forcing it too! Glad you had such a fun weekend! Although I HATE trying on clothes and would have had a meltdown if I tried on over 40 pairs of shorts. Did you finally find some you liked?
I also enjoyed pancake Sunday today!
Yes! I got a pair at Forever 21 and another at American Eagle.
I definitely don’t blog when I’m not in the mood. I enjoy blogging a lot as a mind dump so I usually am in the mood, but when I’m not I don’t force it. I’m far from a professional either, so I don’t take it seriously.
i never blog when i don’t want to, it’s not my day job and it’s my blog! totally take time for yourself! i skipped breakfast this morning, just wasn’t hungry. i had an iced americano around 1, and just had some lunch from whole foods hot bar yum! tonight we’re grilling some tarbot (one ugly 2 left eyed fish heh) with a broccolini/olive tapenade salad thing
*turbot…not made of tar whoops!
Haha I wouldn’t know the difference because I have never heard of it!
I don’t force myself to blog. If I need a day off or a week off then I take it.
I love that you are a “professional liver” — I find myself doing things that I think about taking pictures of, but I don’t. I just want to experience it!
Oh baby momma,
I kno you post everyday, but I hope you never feel pressured too. Like poo (tee hee), its not good to force it. I like posting, but if I have nothing to say or if I just plain have better things to do, I just dont do it. Your readers arent going to abandon you if you missed a day, or two, or a week even. The blog world is great, but its still virtual. I love our little virtual quips but isn’t it so much fun actually hanging out with you in real life? No blog post can generate that happiness.
Wow, done with my novel. Love you!
Oh I definitely don’t feel pressured! Ever. That was kinda the point of this post. To put it out there that blogging without desire shouldn’t be done. Although it is ironic that I didn’t want to blog so I blogged about not blogging when you don’t want to blog. Hmmmm….
The word “blog” is weird. I kind of hate it.
“I am a profession liver” – love this and that’s how it should be in my book!
I love this blog entry! I totally agree that living is more important than blogging. Even though I love your blog.
Yea for dried cherries and cherry jam! And of course the Farmer’s Market.
I used to blog for the sake of blogging, but I now I skip it. However, sometimes I do get stressed out about not posting, but then I remind myself, it’s a hobby, not a job. You’re so right – I’d rather be living life.
Breakfast = coffee + chocolate. Happy. :)
Girl, you always post this and two days later churn out fab stuff. Chill out and live your life :)
Definitely chilled out and living life.. that’s the best part. Two years ago I’d never dream of going to the farmers market without full intentions to blog. What the hell was I thinking? That’s retarded.
My laptop has been in a funk. And just when I think of something interesting to blog about, it decides that it no longer feels like allowing live writer to work. Story. of. my. Life. haha
Also, I just got instagram, and I really like it. I didn’t realize it had a twitter”esque” feed.
what’s your handle? mine is janetha
Healthyteacher :)
I don’t think people should fret about “blogging funks”… there is absolutely no reason to get stressed over chronicling everyyyyything and posting under a regular schedule…. So don’t worry about it! We’ve all been there.
Breakfast: many many samples from the farmer’s market
Oh I am not worried at all! That was mainly my point.. to say that it’s OK to have a blog and go do blog-worthy things and, gasp, not blog about them.
I always think…”if i don’t want to read my own posts, why posts?” it must be lamo then. haha. Not worth the energy, well unless youre getting paid MUCHO!!!
i love kombucha!
And I love how you’re a great “liver” Janetha! Whoa that sounds funny~liver? Not the organ! :P
I definitely don’t blog everyday, nor when I’m busy or don’t want to. I just do it when I can and want, and it’s usually 3 times a week? Although I always have many many things to say, I try to take it easy :D
Your picture kissing the kombucha is so funny! Love it.
mmm, I had some peachy keen steel cut oatmeal with homemade granola… with a side of #TGFA announcement ;)
Yay.. best breakfast!
Hmm, your ‘blogging funk’ today is my normality and has been for months and months- perhaps since my Dad died. I’m out being a non-professional liver all the time and I am lucky if I have enough time to catch up on emails, talk with Derek, cuddle some kitties, do all the everyday living/housework stuff, read my favorite blogs and perhaps read a few pages of a magazine. No where in there is writing my own blog! You saw first hand how much trouble I have with Picasa etc. and how many hoops I need to jump through just to get a post up: hours and hours and hours and hours of computer time that I simply won’t give. I do not want to close my blog, and I feel that I still have some good things to contribute to the community, but these days I’m thrilled to post about once a week or so. Seriously, that’s why I love Instagram! It’s small enough to keep it in control and yet I get to share with people the little fun parts of my day. Perfect. One day I might just transition the blog to a few photos and a recipe or something. Keep it really simple and fast. Like ELLIE’s blog. God I love writing (‘writing??) that blog more than anything!
Wanted you to know that I put the button on my front page, and I filled out the spreadsheet and have my items ready to go.
Breakfast was a pretty sad shake, to be honest. :-/
Your blogging situation is flipping horrible. I wonder why it’s so hard for blogger. You need to switch to WP! I love IG, too. It is so easy and I know exactly what is going on with you and what Ellie is eating each day…
I definitely don’t blog if I’m not feeling it. That being said, I don’t seem to take many days off. I think there would be more pressure though if my posts were longer, but they’re usually pretty short.
Breakfast was some apples and oat bran topped with a fried egg! And coffee. Duh.
I feel like I started my blog at the worst time. Since summer has started, we’ve been spending ALL of our extra time at the lake…where there is no internet access. So, blogging has been minimal. I feel like a terrible blogger (um, cuz I am), but I know once summer is over, I will have tons of extra free time and I definitely want to give my blog the love it deserves!! Until then, I’m going to live life and post when I can.
Oh, and I made eggs, sausage, and toast for everyone for breakfast this morning! I didn’t try the sausage, but it smelled up the cottage for the entire day!
hope you had a great weekend Janetha!
Sorry you were in a bloggy funk. We ALL have them. I do post but the posts are more fluffy, just show basic eats, a few daily details from the day and keep things very short and sweet.
I also have a handful of posts that are 100% written. And another half dozen that are pretty “timeless” and are 80% written so on those days I am slammed or funked, I have things in my arsenal.
I write only about what new recipes I am cooking, so I don’t blog if I have nothing new. I don’t think I could blog about everything in my life-I’d rather just be in the moment. But I like reading other people’s day to day stuff!
As for breakfast, I usually don’t eat it but I woke up around six burning up so I got up, ate a sugar-free fudgesicle and went back to sleep awhile longer:)
fudgesicles for breakfast FTW!
nice pancakes, but i covet the plate!
janetha, you are fun to read even when in a funk. thanks for sharing that you’ve just been blah. it’s ok! (now i sound like melissa, haha!).
i am blogging every day because it was one of my 2011 goals. but i have discovered i HAVE TO blog what i FEEL LIKE blogging – if i try to force a topic or idea, it’s NOT FUN and i only like to be laughing in my head when i blog.
sounds like you had a great weekend and glad you just LIVED IT!
I love your protein pancakes!!!
I do not post when I’m in a blog funk…or when I’m too busy having fun! I typically miss a day during the weekend just because I don’t feel like blogging then – even though it’s my most exciting couple of days! And it’s Sunday and my Google Reader is at 550, if that tells you anything :-P
During the week, if I’m super busy, my posting will be less frequent because like you, blogging’s not my job. I won’t get fired if I miss a post, but I will get fired if I miss work to blog ;)
I think it is very important for bloggers (totally just typed boogers!) to remember that it is ok to not blog sometimes. What you said is totally true – don’t post just for the sake of posting. . . something I try to keep in mind if I don’t have anything in particular to blog about!
For breakfast I had an iced latte with a fiber one bar before a hot morning run!
Great post and great question. We have been in blog funks before, where we just do not want to blog or post for whatever reason! It does happen we are human ;) We try not to post when we really do not have much to say but then sometimes we feel ‘we need to’ it is weird, I know haha
I didn’t think it was a “funk” that I am currently in, when people email or call and ask where I am, I say I’m enjoying summer, I’m living! I did try to post the other day, though, and just didn’t feel it. So I didn’t. I think I’m out of practice! :D
I have an email half written to you – I will be donating something, just need to figure out WHAT. :D
I haven’t been in a blog funk yet since I’m pretty new to it. But, I’m sure that when it happens I will not regularly post. I don’t want to write about something just for the sake of making a post. Today I didn’t really have anything to share, so I took the day off. It was awesome :)
I saw the email for the great fundraising act and i wanted to give you and everyone else a big big hug! I will probably only be able to donate some money, but the support just blew me away. not that it suprised me bc i know how amazing susan is :).
My gosh, with all the work you’ve been doing for Susan’s auction, it’s no wonder you haven’t been in a blog mood. Personally, I love all your posts. It’s like quickly catching up with a friend :) I pretty much post no matter what, but I can almost always find something to say. Maybe even when I shouldn’t?
For breakfast I had a green smoothie AND some wheat bran porridge. I was hungry :)
I am constantly amazed at your ability to publish such quality posts EVERY DAMN DAY. You are the creative queen of the world. My mom and I always talk about how amazed we are with your creativity, wit and humor. For real!
Mmmm double dose breakfast. Gotta feed those big muscles, right?!
And yes.. I think the behind-the-scenes auction work is what burned me out. I just didn’t want to blog! Plus, the auction work is for a greater good and I don’t mind it.
Love you!
I post everyday. When I get an idea for a post I write it up and save it. When I am in a funk, I can use one of my pre-written posts. Maybe that would help you too.
I don’t have the time to write a non pre-written post let alone pre-write some! Haha. I wish I did, but the issue isn’t that I don’t have stuff to write about.. it’s that I am just too busy doing stuff and would rather do more and write less.. and that’s fine by me.
In the beginning, I posted everyday. I would get seriously stressed out if I didn’t get SOMETHING up before midnight each day, but then I came clean about my stresses on the blog and took my first “day off” and guess what! The world didn’t end! Who’d have thought!? It’s amazing what we allow ourselves to be stressed over! I have been feeling a little guilty lately for being absent from blog reading/commenting though, but seriously, I could spend ALL day inside getting caught up and still feel behind! I love all of my bloggie friends to death (especially you m’dear) but I don’t want to look back one day and wonder why I spent so much of my time inside in my virtual world as opposed to out in the real world living life!
Just finished breakfast (that I did NOT take a picture of…rebellious, I know!): cheesy quinoa and eggs topped with spicy marinara sauce and some seriously strong coffee since I stayed up waaaaaay too late last night working on being a “professional liver”! ;)
I try to post daily, but if there’s nothing to write about – I don’t force it. When I first started I would force a post, not worth it!
If I can’t think of something to write, I usually don’t post. I try all the time to think of creative things to write about but sometimes it’s just not there. It’s hard to be creative everyday. ;)
I had cereal with soy milk this morning for breakfast and it was delicious!
I’ve been in a bit of a blogging funk, too, Janetha! I’m concentrating more on living than blogging! Sometimes, we need to reconnect that way and separate the two for a while until we get the mojo back :)
You read my mind!
same thing is happening to me right now. actually, i just posted a few min ago about how i’m living life rather than blogging everyday. i haven’t been doing any daily postings lately because summer and the weather is keeping me outside and i’ve been so busy and soaking it all in. i don’t force posts, just let it happen when it can :)
I hadnt blogged for the last 2 weeks because of some bad stuff going on in my life. I wanted to blog about it but was to nervous…then I just said screw it and blogged about it. And now, i feel better and am back to blogging :)
I say blog when you really feel like it but don’t force posts.
I hope everything is OK!
I tweet more when I have “the block”
I had homemade strawberries and cream oatmeal with uncle sam’s stirred in.
professional liver. :) cheers. well done organizing TGFA. im just now getting caught up to speed after a weekend away, but ill scope out the spreadsheet today and get up on top of things! this is such a great thing you are helping do and proves how blogging is so much more than taking pics of food.
hey, i say enjoy the weekend. blogging takes a backseat to LIFE anyday. can’t wait to participate in the fundraiser for susan! got your email just no time to respond yet! <3 xo.
