…is the 121st day of the year.
wow. that means the year is already 1/3rd over! can you believe how fast time is flying?!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
…is 77 days before my wedding.
holy crud. don’t remind me! i feel so unprepared!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
…is exactly one month until i enter my late twenties.
AKA exactly one month until my birthday. marshall and i have discussed this break down on several occasions, and we decided this is how it is:
- 20, 21, 22 & 23= early twenties
- 24, 25 & 26= mid twenties
- 27, 28 & 29= late twenties
sigh. it’s all downhill from here ;)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
…is national chocolate parfait day.
i wish i had some chocolate vitatops because i would totally celebrate with a parfait a la k! i used to eat those so often.. i looked in the archives and found an old chocolate vita parfait photo to rep the national food holiday :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
…is day one of my wakeup call challenge.
if you haven’t read about it yet, check out the challenge page i made for it~ and join in! it is going to be a lot of fun and you could win a super sweet prize :)
this morning i started with just 5 minutes of plyo for the first day of my challenge:
- 1 minute of butt kicks
- 1 minute of jumping jacks
- 1 minute of belt kicks
- 1 minute of high knees
- 1 minute of downhill ski jumps
my heart was pumping. it is really hard for me to get going in the morning and i can see that this challenge is definitely going to be.. well.. a challenge! but that is why i am doing it. hell or high water (what does that phrase even mean?) i WILL become a morning person :)

…is the only day that the jazz have off between WINNING THE QUARTER FINALS last night and game 1 of the semi finals (against the lakers) tomorrow.
we went to the game last night and we were on THE VERY BACK ROW. like.. the very, very, very back row. it was so fun. and it didn’t matter that we were at the back. it was awesome.
we put on our “game faces”. fierce.
and we won :)
go jazz!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
…is saturday! which means a more time consuming, leisurely brunch:
i saw jessica talking about omelets today so i had to make one! this was just 4 egg whites+1 whole egg+cheddar cheese. topped it off with some reduced sugar ketchup. mmm.. cheeeese.
i also had a small bowl of kashi go lean~
i love free day because my meals can be a tad carb heavy and i don’t have to worry about it. although, looking back on brunch, this was a pretty balanced carb/protein ratio meal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
…is the first day of the following national food months:
- national asparagus month
- national barbecue month
- national chocolate custard month
- national egg month
- national gazpacho aficionado month
- national hamburger month
- national salad month
- national salsa month
- national strawberry month
now you know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
…is a good day to drink THREE mugs of coffee the size of my head.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
…is day one of national bike month. but my bike is at marshall’s.. and it was raining all day. so i went to the gym for my cardio!
my physical therapist told me i needed to take more time warming up before i dive right into my workouts. so i started with a 7 minute warmup instead of the usual 2 minute one.
elliptical:
| minute # | resistance level | speed range (MPH) |
| 0-1 | 1 | 5.0-6.0 |
| 1-2 | 2 | 6.0-7.0 |
| 2-3 | 3 | 6.0-7.0 |
| 3-4 | 4 | 7.0-8.0 |
| 4-5 | 5 | 7.0-8.0 |
| 5-6 | 6 | 7.0-8.0 |
| 6-7 | 7 | 7.0-8.0 |
| 7-8 | 8 | 7.0-8.0 |

| 23-24 | 8 | 12.0-13.0 |
| 24-25 | 6 | 6.0-7.0 |
total time: 25 minutes, total distance: 3.2 miles
i couldn’t help myself and i ran 1 mile on the treadmill after this so i could add to my mileage goal~
| minute # | speed (MPH) | incline |
| 0-0:30 | 5.0 | 2.0 |
| 0:30-1:00 | 5.5 | 2.0 |
| 1:00-1:30 | 6.0 | 2.0 |

| 3:30-4:00 | 8.5 | 2.0 |
| 4:00-4:30 | 9.0 | 2.0 |
| 4:30-5:00 | 5.0 | 2.0 |
| 5:00-5:30 | 5.5 | 2.0 |
| 5:30-6:00 | 6.0 | 2.0 |
| 6:30-7:00 | 6.5 | 2.0 |
| 7:00-7:30 | 7.0 | 2.0 |
| 7:30-8:00 | 7.5 | 2.0 |
| 8:00-8:30 | 9.0 | 2.0 |
1 mile in just under 8 min 20 seconds
so my total workout today was just over 30 minutes~ i burned around 300 calories. not bad.

…is FREE DAY, which means dinner out with friends :)
we went to canella’s which is an italian restaurant in downtown SLC. our friends go all the time but marshall and i had never been. EVERYTHING on the menu looked super delicious, but it was pouring down rain and i was really in the mood for soup. my friend kristen told me that their side salad was really good because it contained garbanzo beans. um, sold!
i went with the side salad & vegetable minestrone soup.. both of which contained garbanzos, actually! super double score.
the house dressing, which i got on the side (because i hate soggy lettuce!) was incredibly flavorful. it was a unique blend of italian dressing and bleu cheese. i loved this salad because it had so many components! iceberg and romaine lettuces, cucumber, grape tomato, beets, beans and cheese. and a super teeny pepperocini! cute.
this vegetable minestrone soup was just what i needed to warm up.
it was packed with all kinds of veggies, noodles and beans!
we were all pretty full after our meals, but then kristen told us that their tiramisu was one of the best she’s had~ and she doesn’t even love tiramisu! well, you know who DOES love tiramisu? marshall. he is even having a tiramisu groom’s cake. so naturally we ordered a piece and i helped myself to quite a few bites.
hey, it’s no chocolate parfait, but it’ll do ;)

Qs~
1. what national month of may food holiday (listed above) are you most excited about? wow. that is hard. i guess i will have to pick egg since i love eggs.. from my head down to my legs. but i am pretty stoked on the strawberry shenanigans that go on in may as well!
2. let’s pretend you always order dessert. what is your favorite dessert to order at a restaurant? i really never do order dessert.. i am always SO full after eating dinner! but marshall likes tiramisu so i usually end up with a few bites of that. but since we are pretending, and i am not so dang full and have room for dessert, my favorite dessert to order is some sort of fruity cobbler or crisp. peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream? yes please!
happy may! hope everyone has a great sunday!

Thank you for reminding me about National Bike Month — I am definately most excited about that. There is always a “Bike To Work Day” here in San Francisco where they set up stands around the city in the morning and evening with free snacks, coffee and cool tote bags, plus there are lots of bike mechanics who volunteer to answer questions and check out your bike. It’s on May 13th this year, and while I ride my bike to work almost every day, I am really looking forward to it.
I really only order dessert when there is creme brulee, and then I ALWAYS order the creme brulee. I fancy myself a bit of an aficionado.
I hate to think of the year 1/3 over! That is depressing…but I know it’s true. I’ll be turning 26 on May 22nd, and I am not as excited this year as other years. I feel like after 25 it’s all downhill…haha! I love your wake up challenge. I try to do some simple exercises in the morning to get my heart pumping. It’s actually a routine of mine for many years…I do it with out even thinking. Any birthday plans this year?
Ok, I kind of love all of those items for May! Like I could NOT pick a fave. I’m pretty sure May 6 is also National Dessert Day, because it’s my bday and of course my sweets-loving self would be born on dessert day. Of COURSE.
That said, at restaurants I don’t order dessert often because I’d rather go for fro yo or some small sweet treat I have at home, but we sometimes order tiramisu because the boy will help me eat it unlike other sweets. Or some sort of apple crisp or cookie/brownie sundae thing. Dang now I want dessert and it’s 10:30 AM :-) shocking.
1. Definitely salsa month! I went to a huge salsa fest last weekend and trying so many different kinds made me want to plow through jar after jar!
2. I’m not a huge dessert fan, but I am a big ice cream fan! It’s almost impossible for me to say no!
I would have to say salsa or gazpacho aficionado (because it is delicious and rhymes!). Congrats of the Jazz wind!
My boyfriend lurves creme brulee, so we’ll typically split that if either of us has room for desert.
Great post! very creative use of May 1st! ;)
Good eats too. And who knew there were so many national food days in May?
My favorite month day would have to be Salad Month! I honestly LOVE salad… just so many possibilities! I think I may have to write about eating a salad every single day this month..
:)
Hi Janetha,
Love your blog! It’s nice to read a food blog from someone local (I’m from The SLC as well). Anyway, this is kind of random, but I’ve read how much you like PB2, so I thought you would be interested in a local product, since PB2 is on back order for the next century. Here’s the link: http://www.fitnutzbutter.com/index.html. I haven’t tried it yet, but it was in City Weekly’s latest “Best Of” edition and it has received good reviews from other bloggers. I just placed my order and I’m excited to try it…especially since it’s local!!! Can’t wait to put it in my yogurt.
Jana
I still haven’t gotten used to putting 5 instead of 4 for the month. is it really may!?
I think that is the greatest looking coffee mug! perfect volume
Katherine
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an awesome looking side salad. Most are so plain and bland! And who on earth besides you manages to eat relatively healthy on their FREE day? This was probably better than I eat on a normal day…
For me its between barbecue month and salsa month. I love both.
At restaurants I liked to order cheesecake. I can never eat more than just a little bit anyway, but restaurants is the only time I get it.
Ooooh, and also, I decided to move to Oregon, like next week, so I’m passing through Salt Lake City this weekend! Will you be around to meet and/or could I crash at your place? It’s probably terribly rude to ask such things, but you were the one person I thought of who lived in SLC (I hope you do and I wasn’t wrong, hehe).
You guys are soooo cute – LOVE the pics!
I have some Vita’s in my freezer you can have :D
I think your wake up challenge is making your bootie sore :)
