- my move: When I thought about my favorite moves and meals I thought about my favorite PLACE that I have ever been- Greece!
One of my favorite moves is definitely hiking. You get to explore a new place and see beautiful sights, and it’s exercise in disguise!
In Greece this summer, on the island of Crete, my family and I hiked the Sumeria Gorge. 11 miles long, it is the longest gorge in Europe. You start at the top at the crack of dawn and then hike down and through the gorge, coming out at a beautiful beach. The scenery is beautiful!
Here I am trekkin’ along
And my sister and I between the Iron Gates, a truly spectacular natural formation.
- my meal:
And you’d better believe that we hiked well and we ATE WELL in Greece!
This was one of my favorite meals I ate in Greece, also on Crete.
Beautiful psomi (bread) with a whipped butter spread and tapenade
For more dippage, unbelievable fava bean dip
Bread salad, a Cretan specialty, featuring local greens that only grow on the island
Beautiful fresh whole grilled sardines
At this point we were stuffed, but the custom on Crete is to bring out complimentary dessert. At this place, they served us REAL Greek yogurt and something I have not eaten before or since: preserved oranges. They were likely grown and preserved just down the street from the restaurant (Crete is full of beautiful orange groves).
The topping was made of whole oranges, but the concept of preserving them in sugar was kind of like marmalade, if marmalade were transcendently delicious.
And then, totally stuffed, we sat a bit longer and admired the view from our table
I highly recommend Greece as a destination for great meals and great moves!

lele~thanks for the amazing scenery pics! we have never been to greece, but the boy and i LOVE hiking! we are really starting to get more into it, so GREECE may just be added to the ‘bucket list’!!! the fava bean dip looks amazing also!! ~terri
What great memories. Love those destination workouts! That gorge sounds very challenging and rewarding.
Love the sardines and the idea of the preserved oranges- it isn’t common here but it’s a great idea. Yah the fava bean dip looks sooo great.
