move more in may!
the move more in may challenge is designed to get me off my ass and onto my feet. this means in the morning, during the day, and after work. typically the only time i am really moving around is during my workout of the day. if i am not at the gym, i am always sitting or laying. want proof? i wake up (from laying position), drive to work (sitting in my car), sit at my desk for the majority of the 8 hours i am there, sit some more on my drive home, sit on the couch after my workout and dinner, and then lay back down in bed… only to repeat the process again the next day.
a lot of people work on their feet, run errands throughout the day, lift their kiddos up and down, take their dogs on walks, or all of the above. but me? none of the above. heck—i am so sluggish that i drop my dogs off at daycare instead of walking them during the week! by the time we (me and the dogs) get home for the day, we snuggle up on the couch together and are all very content with our sluggish selves. marshall is the only un-sluggish one of the bunch.. he works on his feet all day and does lots of heavy lifting. the heaviest thing i lift all day is my pen. or my fork.. during lunch.
i think i have rambled on enough about why i need to move more. now i just need to DO IT! and i need your support, so i want you to move more in may, too! each day, i would like you to comment on the move more in may challenge page telling me how you moved that day OUTSIDE OF YOUR OFFICIAL DAILY WORKOUT. yes, that’s right, we aren’t counting our workouts for this challenge. that’s the whole point—we are already moving during our workouts. this is for all the other moves of the day. be creative. try something different.
here are some ideas:
- take a walk in the morning or evening
- do pushups during TV commercials
- do squats and lunges in your kitchen while dinner cooks
- skip down the hallway at work
- walk around the block during your lunch break (totally just typed “walk around the blog”…)
here are the rules/directions:

- you will submit your entry on the official challenge page.
- your entry needs to tell me how you moved more for that day.
- you can log past days if you can’t get to a computer right away, but remember: one comment=one entry=one day.

Today I walked to Starbucks for my coffee instead of getting it from the break room. Win win!
It’s finals week, which means I’m stuck in the house sitting on my behind and reading my 100 pound nursing books. After reading this last night, I was inspired to go set a goal to break up the monotony. I’m doing 30 crunches every hour and then going for a 5 minute walk. Thanks for the great idea!!
running a fever today… does that count?
yeah that means no workout for me but it wont stop me from trying to get up every few hours and do a short walk to clear my head… normally, i’d just be a couch meatloaf
Today I walked to work instead of taking the train. I don’t always have the time, but I’m always so happy when I do!

I love this challenge. I am in the same boat as you, sedentary all day with my office job and commute. This morning I walked my dog down the street!
I already took the stairs three times instead of using the elevator for our two story building. Go me!
05/01/2012 – usually do an afternoon work out, but before my shower this morning did 100 crunches and 25 (girl) push ups to start the day!

I got in a short run before work today! Also, thanks for helping get my question answered about the boot camp! As of this morning, I’m all registered, and can’t wait for May 14 to roll around.
I went for a walk with my dog and my mom!
I went for a bike ride and brought my dog along too. He loves running next to me while I ride. He definitely has no issues moving. :)
I went for a run this morning in the hot humid weather extra early because I had a meeting! Could of slept but decided to get up and move!
We just moved into a new house. There is a very large back deck that was covered in tree limbs and whatever else fell from the trees above. I swept it off today! It was work! LOL
I walked before breakfast today for 40 minutes and I am standing while at the computer ( apparently standing burns more calories than sitting). I plan to take another walk tonight.
Great idea! My fitbit recently made me aware of how little I can move somedays too. I get a workout in, but maybe only 4,000 steps. I posted about “moveitMay” too. You can use the hashtag #moveitMay if you want! And I’ll share your contest too!
I spent 10 minutes walking the stairs during my school break today.

So far today I’ve done three sets of weights while watching TV! I’m definitely going to keep doing this throughout the month, and further!
Today’s extra moves today 5/1:
Climbing the 8 flights of stairs to get to the 8th floor fitness center where I work.
Major rushing around when I woke up an hour late after realizing I forgot to set my alarm last night when I went to bed. I made it to the club with 5 mins to spare before my class started! I really debated using the elevator (for the sake of time), but I didn’t!
5/1: Instead of sitting down for lunch, I went shopping. :)
I gallopped and skipped with my preschoolers today.
5/1: Took laps around my office building!
5/1–took multiple trips up the stairs while cleaning/organizing my space downstairs + walking while reviewing my notes for my final for tomorrow and walking while I read
Took a walk to the drugstore and to re-park my car at lunch today (so that I have to walk again to go get it after work!)
5/1 :: Did lunges in the driveway while playing with my little boy.
May 1st: Got up 4 times from desk and did 25 jumping jacks each time for a total of 100

This is awesome. With my low intensity work outs I’ve been making a conscious effort to move more lately. I have a post on it in the works too! I will definitely be participating. Great idea.

Am riding my fitdesk bike (love it!!!) while working on my computer.Usually I only do this in the morning but am adding it to my evening now too. Hopefully will continue to add a bit more each day.

I parked in the VERY last spot at the furthest point of the parking lot to walk to my work building, took the stairs, and took two 15min walks through Downtown Disney on my work breaks!!
5/1/12 – I took a 10 minute walk around campus in the middle of my work day.
May 1 – When I rolled out of bed this morning I immediately did 5 minutes of stretching.
May 1: Today I took the stairs up to my Dentist’s office, instead of the elevator :) I also parked further from the store this afternoon instead of seeking out a space up front.
5/1 – Went for a 30 min. walk at lunch and then did some planks. :)
As a reporter, I never know what my day will bring. Some days I am ‘moving’ more. Other days, I sit and pour over paperwork. Today was def an active day! We were out covering tornado damage. Walked/hiked through debris (homes destroyed), waded through flood waters… for hours. It was an obstacle course and now I’m exhausted. Move More? May 1st. Check.
We had indoor recess today, while the kids did puzzles I circled the room, after awhile one of the kids asked why I was walking in circles because I was making her dizzy!!! My friend is a vice prinicpal and patrols the hallways, he walks 6-7 miles a day!!!
This is a great idea! 5/1 – I walked to and from physical therapy (20 min each way) and had a hour and a half session with my physical therapist.
I walked up 6 flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator. Man….stairs get me every time! Also, while putting away groceries I started doing bicep curls with juice bottles, haha. :-)
Today I had to go to Lowe’s for an AC filter. I intentionally walked 2 laps around the whole store before buying the AC filter and leaving.
Took the new pup out for 3 walks today! Since we just got her last night, I think this definitely counts as more movement!
So today was a rainy day in Chicago, but I still managed to walk to the movie theater instead of taking the bus! Plus I chose the stairs over the escalator.
