guys, i am not gonna lie.. i am a tad ragey tonight! all i know is marshall and the pups aren’t my biggest fan right now.. i am super grumpy and irritable.
i think–no, i know–the driving reason behind this was my absolutely awful treadmill mishap this morning. oh, boy, you guys are gonna laugh. but first, my workout. i met my friends kerryne and amanda at gold’s this morning for a little circuit training. i hadn’t worked out with them in weeks–no, months!–so i wanted to get together for a fun little sesh.
[pinit]
after the circuit work, kerryne and i headed to the treadmills for 15 minutes of sprints (30 seconds on, 30 seconds off.) we completed our first 30 seconds and then stepped off to the side for our 30 seconds off, and i had to tie my left shoe. i placed my foot up on the bar of the treadmill, tied it, and when i put my foot back down… it slipped between my treadmill and kerryne’s treadmill! that started the shit storm that we shall refer to as the treadmill tragedy of 2013. because my foot was wedged between the treadmills, my whole body fell and my right knee was skidding against the treadmill belt (which was whizzing along at 8.5 MPH…) my body was somehow jumbled into a hot mess just perfectly enough for my left elbow to be skidding the treadmill belt along with my right knee.
i was down there for what seemed like an ETERNITY. kerryne was trying to help me up AND trying to stop my treadmill at the same time (and, mind you, HER treadmill was still going at 8.5 mph!) finally the guy to my right hit the emergency stop, i got myself up off the belt, and came to my senses. it was crazy! and, believe it or not, i wasn’t really embarrassed. a few people told me they’d cry from embarrassment, but i was more bummed about how bad it hurt than anything else. i decided to call it quits and headed home to hit the shower.
the damage doesn’t look too bad, but i assure you.. it hurts!
my elbow..

my knee..

and a gnarly blood blister that somehow happened to appear after the mishap..

duh. i am an idiot! you guys can laugh at me, promise. i am laughing at myself and everyone i know has laughed at me all day. it’s pretty ridiculous!
anyway, the whole day was spent being uncomfortable whenever i moved. (needless to say i didn’t get anywhere NEAR my 10,000 steps on my fitbit!) the mishap caused me to be way irritable and grouchy. and, wouldn’t you know it, when i am irritable, i think eating is a great idea. so i have been a food monster all day. aside from my main meals, random snacks have included a banana with peanut butter, rice cakes with sunflower seed butter, zillions of clementines, and i just polished off some of the best hummus ever (paired with carrots and celery.)

and.. whoops.. may have had a chunk of almond toffee while waiting for dinner to cook!

that stuff is delicious, melts in your mouth, and is still hanging around from christmas. luckily it’s almost gone.. it’s not doing me any favors in my optimal health challenge! (which, by the way, i will fill ya in on when i am not such a grump.)
like i said, dinner is cooking. it’s 8:30 which is typical for us–we eat dinner late! the top two contenders for dinner:

mmm.. bacon and eggs. we have been having this once a week for the past few months. i used to not be a huge bacon fan, i like it in things like salads or BLTs, but marshall has slowly converted me to eat it by itself and i’m hooked. this is our first time trying the 40% less fat version.. i am skeptical, but we will see if it stands up to our favorite: applegate farms sunday bacon. that kind is the best!
okay, i am gonna go make some over easy eggs and try to get some shut eye. hopefully i will wake up on the better side of the bed and have zero tragedies tomorrow!
Qs~
1. what is one of your most embarrassing moments?
2. what was your last injury–big or small?

Well I’m not going to lie I may have chuckled just a little reading your description of the shit storm – really just too funny :-)
I totally feel your pain because I tend to be just a tad accident prone myself (just another great genetic trait I passed on to you I guess)
Well this morning after seeing your totally sore knee on my phone I promptly smashed my finger between two barbells……just so you wouldn’t feel all alone with your pain.
My most embarrassing moment was when my bikini top came unhooked while I was water skiing and the kid I REALLY liked was in the boat with my dad and another friend. I had to hurry and use one hand to grab the back of my top. When I finally decided my arm couldn’t stand being in that position any longer I let go of the rope—-my clever dad used a fishing swivel to clasp my top back together (no t-shirts in those days haha) I’m sure the kid I liked was super disappointed that I was coordinated enough to ski AND hold my bikini top on at the same time :-) Great memories!
I love you to the moon!! Hope tomorrow is a better day.
xo
You are the coolest mom momma b! Love that story :D
That would be pretty embarrassing momma b!
Well played, momma b! :)
I did the same thing, only I RAN ON MY KNEES. I was perhaps the dumbest ever. I looked like I had been caned across my kneecaps in Cambodia.
I was also 12, so there’s that.
I have fallen off a treadmill while running sprints before. Actually, I flew off the back of it at the speed of light. I was too in shock to even be embarrassed. I still have a scar from the fall. I refer to it as my ‘battle wound.’
I hope tomorrow is a better day for you and your battle wounds heal quickly!
Also? I effing love your mom. Will she adopt me?
“zillions of clementines”… I imagine you throwing them back like popcorn… frantically peeling, cain’t peel fast enough… lol
Sorry about the skinned knees… Double dang!!! :/
Oh man!!!! Sorry for the fall and the injury!! I was cringing reading it.. not laughing. It sounds really really painful and I would be grumpy as well !! Luckily no major damage! Although sometimes those superficial wounds hurt more!
Love that bacon by the way! It’s the kind i always get! Best stats around if ya ask me..!
My last injury was when I was 1 week away from my first marathon. I was doing a little “loosening up” training run and felt this nasty painful twinge right outside my right knee. In the week leading up to marathon day it was not getting better. It was my IT band that just was SO tight and ended up tweaking it. I still attempted my marathon and managed 9 hobbling miles in about 2.5 hours. I was sobbing the whole way, in Disney, not at all magical.. actually quite horrible. haha
oh my gosh – that is seriously my worst nightmare when I’m on the treadmill. I am so sorry!! glad you weren’t more seriously injured, but it still looks pretty painful. :( hope you feel better in the morning.
1. one of my most embarrassing moments: at my old job, i was leaning over in my office chair (yeah, the kind with wheels) to grab a pen which fell on the floor, and I leaned a little too far, and the chair slipped and I toppled over onto the floor, chair and all. wait, there’s more. this happened TWICE at said job. twice.
2. my last injury was when i was making pork tenderloin for dinner in an iron skillet – you sear it on the stove, then toss the entire thing into the oven at like 400 degrees. when it came out of the oven, i used potholders like a smart person, but after setting it down, not 2 seconds later I had grabbed the handle of the skillet without even thinking and burned THE LIFE out of my hand. it took months to heal completely!
I wouldn’t laugh.. That sux.. It’s sad and sure painful. Hope u heal fast
oh my gosh! That is intense! I hope you feel better and are less sore tomorrow. My most recent injury isn’t really an injury. My husband has been traveling a lot so in my boredom I decided I wanted to learn a dance to Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive” off youtube. 4 hours later and my knee has such a huge bruise from the drop sequence that it stayed swollen for almost a week now. I’m totally lame, I know.
One of my most embarrassing moments was tumbling for a college performance our sorority was doing with a fraternity. Everyone was watching me tumble and I had so much power that I hit the wall and twisted my ankle. I had to quit the skit and wear a boot for a month. To top it off, my ex-boyfriend (who had dumped me a month before) was the Fraternity President. ha!
Oh no! I’m so sorry about your fall! I don’t blame you for being in a grumpy mood! I have to say, reading momma b’s comment made me smile as I’m sure it did to you. What a great momma you have :-)
Poor girl! I have to disagree on appearances though. Your injuries look pretty awful and sore to me! Ow! Hope you recover quickly.
My most embarrassing moment – gee, there have been so many! I’ll combine the two questions. We went bike riding with another family in our subdivision over Labor Day weekend, and their young novice bike riding daughter turned right in front of my bike. I slammed on my brakes and went sailing right over the handlebars. I don’t know exactly what my body did while I was in flight, but I ended with a total sliding belly flop across another neighbor’s freshly hydroseeded lawn. Yup, I flew pretty far! I ended up spraining both wrists, bruising my ribs, twisting my knee, and dislocating my shoulder. My entire left side was black and blue. I really hurt, but the humiliation connected to the trench I plowed through my neighbor’s newly seeded lawn was far worse. Everytime I pass their house I still cringe!!!
Andd this is why I hate the treadmill. Feel better
you poor thing! we all have grumpy days, moments, hours, whatever. i fully approve of looking to the ‘ol chocolate for some therapy! feel better, janetha. tomorrow is a new day (I know, cheesy). :)
I get to combine both of your questions into one answer:
My most embarrassing moment ever AND my latest injury occurred last May when Tommy was running the Ogden Marathon. I was supposed to be running it with him but had a knee thing going on from running the SLC Marathon the month before so I opted out. I decided that I would at least meet him with about 4 miles to go and run alongside for moral support. As we were running down the river parkway with about 3 miles left, a friend that I hadn’t seen in years yelled my name from the side of the road. I turned and started back peddling while I was yelling for her to call me. I back peddled off the path, literally did a back somersault down the steep river embankment and landed about 2 feet from the river. I got up to about 30 spectators asking if I was alright. I was so embarrassed that I got up, wiped the dirt out of my hair and took off running to try and catch up with Tommy. The best part of this story is that a week later I started getting a rash that spread up my leg. I had poison ivy from my ankle to above my knee from the river bank. I felt like a moron for a month explaining how I got it. I also had about 4 comments on Facebook from people from high school saying they saw me roll off the trail and wanted to know if I was okay. Never stop rocking.
Ouch, that does actually look really painful. Those kinds of grazes are the worst. Hope it heals quickly.
Yowza! I have hit the dirt a few times… My poor phone and iPods have all taken a beating on the ‘mill as well. It is terrible.
Even worse is when you fall running in the street. Ugh…
Your wounds look pretty painful. I hope they feel better soon!
When I was a teenager I went to look out a window at some hot guys, sure wasn’t a window but a glass elevator! I smashed my face into it. We had bacon and eggs tonight too..and waffles. Now if I can stop watching Betty whites new show (which would cheer you up) we are going to watch Ted.
Last big injury I popped something in my thigh by not warming up before softball. Bad news, my already large thigh swelled so bad.
first? Momma B is the best.
and oh, lordy girl! sorry to hear about this – I have first hand knowledge of how horrific that is – I did the same thing a few years back. At the gym I tend to run REALLYSUPERFAST on the treadmill, so I can get out of there. My foot hit the side and I fell, my shoes eeek Eeek EEEKING like on a gym floor but louder, and I went flying off and hit the wall behind me. I got back up and started walking… the guy next to me looked over and said “happens to the best of us”.
so yeah – happens to the best of us, sweets. I hope you are feeling no pain soon.
my last injury? this morning. I fell from a slick spot on our deck, running after the dog who was barking her head off at the neighbors dog. :) I have a doc appointment tomorrow because I can barely walk and my ankle is puffed up so big. :(
hugs and long dog loves! XO
I’m so sorry your skinned but I did laugh… sorry!! When I was in high school I had a total crush on this boy and we we’re walking and I totally missed the curb and fell flat. on. my. face. I was so humiliated
I always think of that when I think of “most embarrassing” moment!!
In June I had some lower back pain that wouldn’t go away. An MRI confirmed my suspicions that I’ve got 2 herniated (mild) disks.. L3 & L4.
Something that really sucks for someone who likes to workout.. which I haven’t been doing a lot of.. I’m finally on the road to recovery with the help of yoga and patience!
Hope your week gets better!
Ahh! Falling on a treadmill is one of my biggest fears! And I don’t know what you’re talking about because those injuries DO look bad to me! Maybe I’m just a baby…
Don’t worry though. Bacon will make it better. Bacon makes everything better.
OMG that’s seriously my biggest fear!! I am supposed to do sprints tomorrow, now this is all I’m going to think about. I am glad you’re ok! I hit my head on something recently, and I had a tender spot but I for the life of me can’t remember what I did… Not a good sign haha.
oh my gosh! Yikes…hope everything heals fast. The most embarrassing trauma happened to me in high school. I was a cheerleader and we were all watching the JV basketball game before varsity started. There was a balance beam next to one of the walls in the gym and the girl were running and jumping up to sit on it to watch the game. I jumped a little too much, flipped over the back of the balance beam, and got caught between the balance beam and the wall with my skirt up….yup. I’ve been an eating machine today too. Hummus and vegetables is so darn good. Hang in there!
Owww! I could only imagine getting the skin ground off my knee while stuck between treadmills! Those really hurt too. :( I hope you heal up quickly!
Once I was at the gym doing box jumps (on the littlest box mind you) and I had too much forward motion and had to sort of crash into the weight rack to keep from stumbling to the floor! I looked around and hoped that not too many people saw. But whatevs, people trip all the time at the gym, so I wasn’t really embarrassed either.
Oh no!!!!!! I’m so sorry. That sounds and looks painful. I know it’s painful because I did a similiar thing when I was a teenager. I was running on a treadmill and fell and then ran on my knees in a panic until it spit me off the back. My knees looked like yours…like I had taken a cheese grater to them. I’m still nervous on treadmills to this day…20 years later. I rarely go faster than 6 mph cuz so scared. Fell better. Btw you aren’t stupid you had an accident. Xo
Dude there is NO WAY I’m laughing at that…karma man, it’s a you-know-what and I’d probably end up hanging myself on the cable system at the gym tomorrow! Plus, I can’t shake the sympathy pains I’m having for you right now! Ouch!
Most embarrassing moment: A little background first…I’m in high school. sixteen years old. My car’s breaks are out so I have to ride the bus. Term paper due. I’m a procrastinator (always have been, always will be). My computer effs up and tries to eat half my paper the morning that it’s due. I miss the bus. I frantically jump in my break-LESS car and drive to my friend’s house 2 streets down and use her computer. Term paper saved! (hooray!) I ride to school with my friend and leave the car at her house (still have no idea how I didn’t wreck). My dad (who has been a cop nearly all my life, but definitely NOT something I wanted spread around in the middle of high school) freaks out when he sees the car missing. Drives to my school in the middle of lunch IN HIS UNIFORM and rushes me out of the cafeteria…omg, I was SO embarrassed! Half the school thought I was getting arrested…until I was all like, no that’s um…my dad! :-/
Last injury: Yesterday I strained my knee on the stair stepper at the gym. I have no idea what I did, but I’ve been hobbling around like a gimp ever since. Yeah, I’m special…um, I mean COOL like that!
Hi Janetha,
I never commented on here before, but I thought this might cheer you up a bit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNPhVVjnoC0
Hope your burns and abrasions get better soon, and don’t forget: It also happens to others! ;-)
Oh, my goodness…I never laughed…even once…I cringed the entire time and gasped when I saw your pictures. I am so sorry you got hurt!Your story became my “weet, weet, weet” of my treadmill fear. I have always envied people who can run freely on them.
My most related embarrasing moment happened 40 seconds into a bellydance performance. My knee dislocated and I went straight down to the floor. Since I was wearing the billowy harem pants, audience thought it was part of the dance!
My “all time, lifetime, always will be” most embarrasing moment will be the moment I opened the door to let my cat out early one morning. We lived out in the country in the middle of a huge pasture – no neighbors. I was “nekked as a jaybird”. When I opened the door, there stood two pest control men reay to knock at the door! I froze, they froze, time froze…I slammed the door shut and ran crying to my husband. He let them in to spray the house except for the room I was hiding in. I cancelled the service that day!
So sorry you got hurt, that’s not funny that’s horrible!
Also , you kill me with your food monster – you “binged” on fruit, veggies, hummus, and nut butters! If that had been me it would have been ice cream, cookies, and eating out!
Oh girl! I can only imagine how damn scared I would be if that happened to me! I am so sorry, I hope you are feeling MUCH better today! Just think of all the good things, grateful things, and realize how small and how silly that was to be upset over! I love you!
You are a rockstar ;) Just be safe on those treadmills girl!
i looked like that once! i did the same thing but fell outside, on pavement, in front of the gym. I told people i ran into a coyote on the trails. No lie!
i have fallen off a treadmill before….when i was PREGNANT. No harm was done, but I know people must have questioned my parenting abilities.
Ugh, that’s intense! And seriously my greatest gym-related fear; I’m definitely a klutz, so I consider it somewhat miraculous that it hasn’t happened to me yet.
My most embarrassing moment was a “that-time-of-the-month” related incident in Math class when I was in grade 10. That was not cool at all – I called me dad to come pick me up and I refused to go back to school that day!
I somehow managed to get the skin of my pointer finger caught in a sliding glass door last week. Big blood blister.
Ugh that sucks! My best friend had a major spill on her treadmill a few weeks ago. She was lucky, but it really could have done some serious damage. Those things are dangerous if you aren’t careful. Glad you are okay lady!
That treadmill accident sounds terrible! I never used to wear the emergency stop thing that stops the treadmill if it comes unattaches from the treadmill. You know that thing? Well, my aunt kind of did the same thing you did and fell off and got pretty hurt. Ever since then, I attach the emergency stopper to my shirt. I might look like a nerd, but you never know what could happen! Especially if you’re working out alone.
See, I don’t think its funny, or embarrassing. I think it sounds like a terrible, painful accident! I am sorry that happened!! Often when I am on the treadmill, my knee goes out… and I go down. I’m kind of used to it now (and keep a stack of pillow at the end for my soft landing ;-) )
But… the fear of it happening is strong and it effects all your future runs! Once you do an epic fall like that and see what can happen… you’ll never look at that treadmill the same!
Heal up, and try to forgive the treadmill. I think he still loves you!
Ouchie, you poor thing!! Big hugs!! I hope you feel lots better (inside and out) today. xoxo
Oh, I feel your pain so much. When we first got our treadmill, I was downstairs doing laundry and my son decided to step on and see if he could run on the thing. By the time my mind registered what was happening, he had the speed up around 10 (he was 8 at the time). He of course tumbled, got caught between the back of the treadmill and the wall and I jumped up on the thing to try and get him out. His stomach was being scraped with the belt and I had my arm and one of my knees down on the belt. We lost quite a bit of skin between the two of us. In the meantime, my husband hears this craziness and bounds down the stairs in 2 leaps. He finally got the emergency stop hit. We all look back on it now and laugh at the absurdity (if I’d been thinking straight, I would have hit the stop immediatly and none of that would have happened), but my son and I have some pretty awesome scars now and a pretty funny story. Needless to say, he hasn’t tried to get on the treadmill since then.
Ouch! And to have it happen in the winter, where you have to wear clothes over your elbows and knees, so there’s no relief from the whole uncomfortableness of it all!
It’s not that I laughed at you, it’s just wow, how many bad things at once can happen?! Seriously…ouch. Hope you’re feeling better today. At least mentally/emotionally. I had a “fat” day yesterday too. I rolled with it. That meant WAY more tootsie rolls than I’d ever normally eat. Whatever. Can’t all be good ones!! I’m still dealing with my stupid foot. My goal this year is to get the strength back in it! I think that’s why I’m still dealing with pain. I haven’t ran in almost two years. Crazy.
Ahh, this is like my worst nightmare! I fell (was thrown) off a treadmill when I was like 4 years old and have been terrified of a repeat my whole life.
And one time I tripped UP the stairs in the middle of campus at CU and was stuck under my 10lb backpack. Facedown on the stairs. Hundreds of people staring. Embarrassed for sure.
I’m hoping these mishaps will make you feel better:
1) In 7th grade I tripped on the track at a football game and slammed into the bleachers (shoulder and neck). A bunch of senior girls saw me and took care of me, but it was mortifying (we were a 7-12 school at that point, and they asked me how I was doing all the time after that).
2) Similar situation … in 9th grade I used to wear platform shoes because the Spice Girls were cool. And I was all over that. I tripped and fell from the top of the student section in the bleachers at a football game all the way to the bottom. There was rolling involved. Everybody who was anybody was in the student section at the football game (normally I sat with the band). So yeah.
Oh man, I have fallen off the treadmill TWICE in my life. Once while running barefoot and in my swimsuit, with two of us on the same treadmill – stupid but we were really young and acting a fool. I got a “rug burn” up my whole leg. The second time was at Park City when I first started really running. I was reaching the end of my running and closed my eyes to “visualize the finish line as they say.” Well, I slid right of the back and slammed into the wall behind me. Visualize, schmizulize. Keep your eyes open on the treadmill!
Love those V Chocolates – have you ever had their chocolate frogs? So cute and they are minty :)
ouch J, that sounds like it really hurt! one of my most embarassing moments was freshman year of high school when i fell down a flight of stairs in a skirt and heels. yup. my skirt was up over my head when i hit the bottom…with granny underwear on. yes i rule!
i actually have an injury right now! all i can do is walk and tiny bit of modified yoga. i pulled my hamstring ~3 weeks ago, i was doing a split in pure barre and i actually heard my hamstring tearing from the ischial tuberosity and i have a bruise that is mostly gone now. it wasn’t a complete tear off the bone but it is def a grade II strain…and it hurts to sit for too long! i can’t run at all and tried to do a burpee yesterday..ouch.
i need to take it easy for the next 4-6wks so walking 2-3x a week and slugging around haha. i’m doing the anti-resolution year for gym-bound-january. oh well…life’s a journey!
Awhh. You poor thing! I wouldn’t be embarrassed either! I just hope you heal up quickly! :)
Ouch! Any kind of burn is the worst, especially on your joints! I hope all the damage heals quickly. One of my most embarrassing stories would definitely be the time I came down a black slide at a water park and realized that my top had completely come off. I opened my eyes and realized I was totally topless. Lovely.
When I got on the treadmill this morning to run intervals I kept thinking of you…I’m so sorry! I would have been crying and embarrassed. Yet you handled it like a champ!
Just after Christmas, I was stung by a wasp…not once, but twice. My whole arm was red, swollen, and HOT to the touch for like a week. Man, it hurt!
I fainted at a restaurant (a couple days before the wasp incident) and showed most of the restaurant my undies….pretty embarrassing.
Oh gosh you poor thing! I am quitting my crossfit box (ugh…despite your advice I still haven’t been able to “fit in” there) after January and heading back to the regular old gym and this has always been one of my fears with the treadmill!
How was the bacon?
We liked it a lot!
Oh my gosh, girl!! Yikes! That totally sucks. I’ve never had a treadmill accident, actually. Which is kinda crazy considering I almost mostly run on the TM!
My sister once fell on the TM (it stopped randomly in the middle of a run) & went flying backwards. She was NOT a happy camper.
Hope your injuries heal quick!
Ouch! Feel better! I once dropped my phone onto the treadmill belt, it flew off the back and hit the person behind me. Oops!
