relaxation takes effort (for me.)

by Janetha on July 31, 2012

in deep thoughts,travel

as you know, i recently returned home from costa rica. it’s in the southern part of central america.

image[2]

i went with marshall (my husband), kristen (my best friend), rory (her boyfriend/my friend), dave (marshall’s friend.. well, mine too), and nick (same as dave) to puerto viejo, which is on the caribbean side of the country, near panama.

image[5]

we stayed at an incredible little bed & breakfast called banana azul. kristen & rory stayed there two years ago and loved it so much, they had to go back. i don’t blame them.. i can’t wait to get back there myself. i reviewed the hotel in GREAT detail on their tripadvisor profile.. click here if you want to read the ramble. in a nutshell, it was an amazing hotel with delicious food, friendly service, beautiful views, comfortable rooms, lots of hammocks, and is a stone’s throw from the black beach of the carribean sea. playa negra.

they also have lots of dogs at banana azul. and cats in baskets.

i am not going to recap this trip the way i have recapped my vacations in the past—meaning day by day, bit by bit. this trip was different. i couldn’t—and wouldn’t recap each day even if you asked me to. let me elaborate on why…

typically when i go on vacation, i am that crazy tourist who takes a point and shoot camera, a DSLR camera, AND an iphone camera and comes home with nearly 1,000 photos. literally—a thousand images stamped on various media cards for me to load onto my computer, blog about image by image, retelling the whole trip (which–to be honest–is something i do enjoy doing.. i like to write), and then probably never look at again. i mean, sure, i’ll see the few photos that i end up printing.. but when i think back, i really don’t go look through my thousands of vacation photos. ever. maybe some people do… i just don’t. in fact, when i was in jamaica, i even bought a special album to print all the photos and place in the album so i could flip through the memories any time the mood struck. guess what? that album is on a shelf.. collecting dust.. not a single photo filling the pages.

when i went to cabo on my honeymoon, i came home only to realize i’d lost my point and shoot camera. it was missing… along with the majority of the photos from the trip. i was absolutely devastated. i called the airlines, called the hotel, and i cried… multiple times. but after the initial disappointment, i realized it was really no big deal. just because i didn’t have a zillion photos of my honeymoon didn’t make the trip less special, less enjoyable, or less memorable. and, let’s be honest, how many times would i have gone back and looked through the photos in the past two years? my guess… zero times.

what i am getting at is that i realized something in costa rica. photos are great. i love photography and taking photos of beautiful things.

people, food, animals, nature.

IMG_4302 IMG_4345 IMG_4396 IMG_4422

i’m passionate about it. i enjoy it. but i also realized it’s not necessary to photograph every. single. little. thing. we did on vacation. in fact, i believe i enjoyed myself more because i didn’t haul around my DSLR camera the whole time (and i also had less chances to break it… like i did on my honeymoon in 2010… and again on my trip to mexico earlier this year. not kidding.)

i also realized that the travel journal blog posts detailing every little moment are probably great for me to write and look back on.. but for my readers? not so much. yes, several of you may enjoy the posts.. but the majority of you probably skim over them. i know this because i typically skim over long, rambling travel posts that are on the blogs i read. even my favoritest of blogs. yep, favoritest is a word. in fact, most people are probably skimming over this right now.

so, with my costa rica trip, i decided i was not going to be the crazy photographing tourist that i typically am. i wasn’t going to blog about the whole experience. i made this decision before even leaving my house for the airport. yes, i still took my DSLR camera (and the extra lens for close-up photos.. which i used a total of zero times) because i knew i’d want some photos of the trip.. but i went into it deciding that this trip didn’t need to be chronicled bit by bit.

one of my faults is that i’m too connected. i mean… i’m a blogger. who blogs almost every single day. and a social media addict–facebook, twitter, pinterest, instagram. of course i’m too connected. it’s not something i think about too often, especially since most people i know (these days) are the same way—very connected. i chalk it up to technology being at our fingertips at all times—and around every corner we turn. it’s just part of life in this day and age, right? well, recently, i have made myself take a step back and analyze my habits. i do realize that there’s such thing as being too connected. when my brain is thinking about blog things too often, even when my computer is off, i know i need to unplug. no, not unplug my computer.. but unplug my brain.

wow. i am getting in thick here. i really didn’t intend for all this to spill out of my fingertips, but now it has and i think i’ll leave it. i initially just wanted to start out a post telling you i decided to take random photos of my trip and not recap the vacation like i typically would. but as you can see, it’s all a bit deeper than that.  these thoughts explain my recent funk when returning home from my technology break. sometimes i wish it was still the eighties…and my most elaborate piece of technological equipment was an original nintendo and maybe a computer that had the oregon trail—in color!

costa rica was good for me. my phone didn’t work. i didn’t have my laptop. i did have an internet connection at the hotel, which i used sparingly (ahem.. instagram) from my iphone… at least for someone like me. mrs. connected. but after a few days in the jungle, away from all the superficial cares of the world, the constant reminder of my day job, and the thoughts of what my blog-post-of-the-day would be… i was able to genuinely let go and relax. like.. really relax. i won’t lie, it wasn’t easy for me to let go of all the typical things that float around in my brain on a daily basis. and truly, those thoughts didn’t go away.. they were just drastically reduced. i feel like it took some effort, but halfway into my trip i felt myself just let go.

and really disconnect. not just from technology, but also from things. just things… in general. i didn’t need anything in costa rica. i didn’t need a purse stuffed with a hairbrush, a mirror, 6 kinds of lip stuff, floss, gum, and the kitchen sink. for once, i didn’t worry about if i had everything i “needed” before leaving to go somewhere. maybe a little money if we were going to town and sometimes my phone to snap a photo or two.. but that’s it. half the time i could have even gone without shoes.

it was cool. i wish it had happened on day one of the trip, because i don’t feel like i unwound (is that a word?) for long enough. and now that i’m back, i want to keep a little piece of disconnected me. i want to remember how good it felt to relax and let go. i want to care less about things that don’t really matter. i don’t want to worry about leaving home without something “just in case.” and i don’t want to feel like i need to check what’s happening on the internet. don’t get me wrong.. i LOVE blogging. i do. i love it. if i didn’t love it, i wouldn’t do it.. bottom line. but it has to be said that blogging—and blog reading and social media–can get in the way of other things in life. you know the saying—“too much of a good thing.”

i am working on that whole balance thing. bear with me.

WOW. this is long… i’ll try to wrap up my thoughts.

to sum things up.. i am going to post random photos from my trip. because, yes, even after all was said and done, i did still take photos. not every meal and every move, not even every day. but there are plenty of photos. and i do want to share them. and tell you delicious places to eat in puerto viejo. and talk about a few fun things to do. in no particular order.

i truly know none of you care how i recap my trip–or if i even recap it at all. shit, several of you are probably shaking your head at my ridiculousness right now because i just went OFF on some crazy tangent about unplugging from technology on my BLOG. i see the irony–i do. i also realize i don’t ever need to justify why i blog the way i blog, but what i just wrote was something i needed to get out—for me. not for you. i know, so selfish. so thanks, blog, for being my platform to do so. and thanks, blog readers, for dealing with my moment.

but after that mind vomit above? i think i’ll save all that costa rica stuff for the next post. because the thoughts in this post were more than enough for my fingertips to type today. very unexpected–but very necessary. i think.

as always, thanks for reading. i hope at least one of you could relate to my ridiculous rambles. i’m just the crazy lady with the keyboard.

Qs~

1. how about you.. can you relax at the drop of a hat or is your mind a mile-a-minute?

2. is there one single thing you absolutely, positively never leave your house without?

It’s so amazing when you eat something really yummy, somewhere really beautiful, with people you really love, and you momentarily go, “Oh, I didn’t take a picture”, and you don’t care. And I think I’ve come to my best revelations in life- about how I’m feeling about my life, about where I want to go next, and about what’s important to me- when I get out of my usual zone. And I always found myself happier when I’m away from technology. For the record, I don’t skim your recaps :) What you call rambling (and you use that term a lot in your blog) I consider… relateable! I love the voice you bring to your blog. But going back to the question you posed, finding it easy to relax, I absolutely don’t but find myself being better at it when my loved ones urge me along (for example, when my boyfriend makes me go camping!) And the nice thing is, getting out of the zone can be something cheap and easy and relatively nondisruptive of one’s life, like eating a picnic somewhere weird. Or seeing Moonrise Kingdom! (Which you should. Very transporting!) Wow, apparently this post has solicited rambling comments.

Kayla @Keep Moving Forward July 31, 2012 at 6:51 pm

My mind is constantly going 100 miles per hour… My husband doesn’t understand how sometimes after we have been inbred for 15 minutes I have to get up and at the least write something down in my planner! Eek. I try not to leave my house… without clothes I guess! ;)

Alex @ therunwithin July 31, 2012 at 7:07 pm

This is so refreshing to hear. I love that you realized this about yourself and learned to find a way to relax. I think this trip was just what you needed. Good for you. I am all about the rambles.

Brittany @ Delights and Delectables July 31, 2012 at 7:21 pm

I love you, and I’m so glad you are back! I’m glad you got to get away and take a break from everything. I have a SUPER hard time relaxing too!

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List July 31, 2012 at 7:41 pm

I read ALL of your rambles. every last word.
And you should read this post of mine from last week:
http://lindsayslist.co/2012/07/on-creating-idols/

I’m living differently since then. Trying to. Being more purposeful.

Bonnie July 31, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Yes – this post came to mind, Lindsay – you’d relate to it on some level I think, Janetha. And I loved your honesty and “ramble” – I totally understand. I’m blogging less, living more, and simply not thinking about it too much. I like to take time to just BE while on vacation and in life (harder to do so during the work week!) and be present with others – technology is definitely a distraction.

And, I too, always read every word – I could “listen” to you ramble for ages. ;) Love you, J! Glad you’re back, but glad you’re back on different/your own terms too. :D

Janetha July 31, 2012 at 9:12 pm

I’m on it. Thanks for the link… since I definitely haven’t read any blog posts from while I was gone! <3 you

Erica July 31, 2012 at 7:44 pm

Good for you girl! Way to just ENJOY! Sounds like the trip was really special. Always fun to have lots of puppers around. I definitely have a HARD time relaxing. I’m a mile a minute chick

Momma b July 31, 2012 at 7:47 pm

Great awesome wonderful post!! You are still wise beyond your years…I learn from every single post and I read every single word!!

Yes I can relax and it dies feel good to unplug…but I occasionally get giddy wondering who has sent me a nite or email. I have also stopped playing the games try to only check instagram and Facebook a couple times a day. It helps my sanity!!

I never leave home without my lipstick!! I’ve actually stopped and bought some if I have forgotten it haha!!

I’m a total nerd!

Love you!
xo

betty November 13, 2012 at 10:53 am

i think i may need some recommendations from you and momma b on what to do while in san jose! i just booked the tickets and i’m putting the deposit down on Friday. we have to stay in san jose the day we get there ( we arrive at 2:30pm, February 24th) and the night before we leave (departing at 3:30pm, March 1st).

we have 3 nights in Puerto Viejo and we definitely want to make the most of it. we booked the animal rescue + chocolate lady + waterfall, canopy tour, and a beach message. we need any and all tips you have about traveling down there and what to do. janetha, i already wrote down the restaurants you recommended!

thanks for the help janetha, you’re great! you can both email me back at bstewart.bbs@gmail.com if you have any tips, and if you have time.. don’t want to bug you all!

Janetha November 13, 2012 at 12:50 pm

I will have my mom email you! She is the expert!!

kellyo July 31, 2012 at 7:49 pm

At almost 49, I thankfully have learned how to relax. I know all my concerns will still be there next week. Good for you and excellent post…

Lindsay @ Fuel My Family July 31, 2012 at 7:50 pm

I disconnect maybe a little to easily. I constantly forget my camera and have been known to misplace my phone for a day or two and therefore not answer it. oops.

Carol July 31, 2012 at 7:54 pm

Loved this post! I totally understand what you mean about being on vacation and finally getting to relax and unwind…usually it’s a few days in on my trips too! Hope you had a great time!

purelymichelle July 31, 2012 at 8:18 pm

haha love the ramble! and everything said is true. glad you enjoyed your trip even with less pics ;)
I rarely ever take me nice camera with me on trips, I love food photography more than just taking pictures, I use my iphone more these days than any other camera. crazy, but I rather capture a moment fast not getting the camera ready, checking the white balance, etc.

Apeil July 31, 2012 at 8:33 pm

Well damn. I love what you said about not “needing” so much stuff, especially in your purse (weird takeaway from this post, I know!) and it makes me want to take so much shit I never use out of mine. I carry mascara in mine that honestly has probably dried up two years ago because that’s how little I “need” it in my purse. Ok yeah, totally going to ride this wave and go clean it RIGHT NOW. So see, this post was worth getting out!

And you’re right, I too skim people’s vacay posts unless its somewhere I’m going soon/have gone to before. :)

April July 31, 2012 at 8:34 pm

I can’t spell my own forking name.

Often, it is very hard to get my hamster off the wheel and stop the mind. But oh, it feels so good when I can!

Jen July 31, 2012 at 8:36 pm

Have you ever heard of the practice of mindfulness. It is a way to train your brain, just like you’d train a muscle, to let go stress or the thought we perceive as stressful. Dr. Baime is awesome! I’d highly recommend just checking out of some of the info on the website. He did an inservice at the school where I teach and I even went to a workshop last night. It’s a very interesting concept and it hits exactly those feelings you were talking about..

Janetha July 31, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Jen, thank you for this! I will be checking it out. Sounds very intriguing!

Nicole C July 31, 2012 at 8:42 pm

I feel ya on the disconnection and the eighties withdrawal. I feel bad for kids these days who will never know what it’s like to not have a cell phone. When we were in Paris I couldn’t use my phone and I didn’t care one bit. Ben bought me a camera and he used it the whole time. I got to soak up the scenery and just be. I do have the say though, this iPad came to the rescue, French tv was terrible.

As for your questions, I can disconnect whenever. I leave my phone in my purse at night and don’t touch it unless I need to. No one calls anyhow but they are warned if so. And leaving my house without a hair tie on my wrist bugs me.

Jen July 31, 2012 at 8:43 pm

I was trying to find a good mindfulness video for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdyQ9y5IUck&feature=related

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 9:33 am

Thanks so much!

lindsay July 31, 2012 at 8:56 pm

That was New Zealand for us. 3 months of somewhat disconnect. I still yearn for it and am learning its okay. I think out society is was too connected. You did exactly what YOU NEEDED. Those memories are in your heart, forever. I’m glad i didn’t hear from you, and i mean that in the most loving way.

Heather (Heather's Dish) July 31, 2012 at 9:18 pm

i have to say i really appreciate this post. when you’re as involved in blogging and media as most of us are it’s so hard to just cut it off. the last time i really completely disconnected was several years ago when i was in the british virgin islands, and that was basically because i was forced to (due to lack of internet).

john mayer’s song “3×5” pretty much sums it up perfectly :)

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 9:35 am

I will have to look that one up! <3 you

Lisa July 31, 2012 at 10:09 pm

I always read your whole posts. I enjoy your rambling:)
I think its so great that you took that time to disconnect and really allow yourself to enjoy the vacation and relaxation time!
These days, technology sometimes can prevent us from viewing life through our own two eyes and allows us to view it through a lens. Its so much better when we put down the camera a view it through our own eyes though! I’m happy to hear you really enjoyed your break and rest!

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 9:36 am

Love what you said–so true about the lens! Thanks for reading :)

Julie July 31, 2012 at 10:31 pm

I’m terrible at relaxing. It requires so much effort!

Candice July 31, 2012 at 10:47 pm

first off. SOOO glad your home.. but I have yet to see you and give you a sweaty sweaty hug…
sencond. Yes. Brent says I’m a total addict. and I admit it. I am.. We have gone to my cabin quite a few times this last month and there is no internet or phone service.. or its just spotty and so slow its annoying. but i totally get that itch to check gpp, fb, instagram, stress about blog post not working etc. I need to rewind because I know its just a blog, not MY life.
good words.
xoxo

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 9:37 am

You make me happy.

Neil July 31, 2012 at 11:33 pm

Holy crap this post made me reflect. Yep, I read every word. I don’t come here for the pics, even though they’re great. You helped me realize I’m a little wrapped up in it all. Sat here reading and longing to be less connected. Will I act on this? Realizing I am only “connected” because I don’t dare not to be. Shutting down my FB … NOW. Thanks for inspiring.

Lili July 31, 2012 at 11:50 pm

Love ur blog.. And was waiting patiently for u to come back. But it’s good to unpLug.. I’m always on my phone checking everything… Couldn’t leave the house w out and sunglasses and chapstick.

jessiker August 1, 2012 at 2:44 am

Man I love you. This is one of my favorite posts. I can totally relate. I get a lot of anxiety about the ways of the world and technology. Sometimes I have to unplug and disappear. I am glad you feel this way, it makes you human and is healthy to think about once in a while. I miss a simpler life often, and feel so blessed that I lived in a time during the technology revolution so I got to see how our was before and after. I could write about this subject for hours and read about it from you for hours. Let’s play this week and do it in person instead x x x x

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 9:40 am

YES I am so glad we were children of the 80s. Seeing you soon, I am sure. Love you.

Gina August 1, 2012 at 4:18 am

you know how most diet plans start with some sort of one-two week super restrictive detox to get us back on track? and then we eventually slowly add back in certain foods?

yeah I think I need to do that with technology. no tv, iPad, iPhone, for two weeks. let my life readjust to what a normal life should be without. let my neck stretch back up from the iPhone induced Quasimodo hunchback we all know we’re growing. and THEN…once I’ve learned to stop racing to “keep up” with everything and everyone else, and I’ve backed track to where I left myself in the dust, I can slowly add these things back in.

This post reminds me of why wall-e made me cry! okay anyways I loved reading your ramble. and I just rambled back!

chin up though!! literally ;)

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 11:57 am

Ha! I love that concept. Totally need to ease into technology–what a great idea.

Kelie August 1, 2012 at 4:38 am

The same thing happened to me last November when my husband and I went on a cruise. After I was finally able to let the Internet go I had such a great time. I’ve cut back big time on Internet usage and I’m so much happier for it. And I totally miss The Oregon Trail!!

Michelle @ Eat Move Balance August 1, 2012 at 5:09 am

The pictures in this post are beautiful!

I am like you . . . and have a terrible time relaxing. My mom used to tell me, “life doesn’t always have to be go-go-go. slow down”. I better at understanding what she was trying to tell me, but I still have to work at doing it.

MelissaNibbles August 1, 2012 at 5:15 am

Since I stopped blogging and reading most blogs I’m a lot happier and feel more connected. My work schedule only allows me so much internet time so I read blogs once a day, check Facebook at night when I get home, rarely check Facebook and I’m never on Twitter anymore. I just don’t have the time with work and life. I’m in a new relationship and blogging hasn’t been a part of this one (comparing it to my last) and it’s a healthier relationship and I’m more present in it. I’m not taking pictures of our dinners, our activities and thinking about how I’m going to write about everything. I’d love to blog again, but it would have to be about something else…not me. Funny fiction essays or something? I don’t know. The internet is a big place and HLB blogs aren’t even 1% of it. Okay, now I’m the one going on a tangent. What I’m trying to say is that I understand and I’m excited to see where you take the blog from here :)

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 11:59 am

Melissa! SO great to hear from you. And even greater to hear you are in a great relationship. That makes me happy. What a lucky dude. I miss your blog, but I totally understand why you stopped. <3

Molly @ A Fresh Start For Molly August 1, 2012 at 5:15 am

What you’re feeling is completely normal….I think going on vacation is a great way to step away from the routine you’re ingrained in and reassess how you want to live your life. I much prefer “Vacation Molly” (relaxed, carefree) and try to bring her out as much as possible!

Ellen M. Gregg August 1, 2012 at 5:20 am

Yesterday, I read an article for work that discussed the concept of “shadow careers.” Basically, it suggested that some of us (points at self) burrow into jobs/activities/lifestyles that incorporate elements of our “real” careers (passions) in order to avoid the risk of doing what we really want/need to do.
To say the article resonated with me is a vast understatement, since I realized I’ve been doing that for years. This thoughtful post of yours reflects aspects of that article (which I need to relocate; I didn’t bookmark it), so here I am, tossing its thread into the ether toward you. :-)
Mindfulness was mentioned in another comment, which I would “like” if that was an option. It does help.
As for relaxing and things I can’t leave home without (because my comment is clearly not long enough), I have gotten better at relaxing, but my mind can be hard to quell, and I can’t leave home without my phone and wallet. :-)

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:13 pm

Ellen, any chance you can find the link to that? I would REALLY like to read it.

Ellen August 1, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Found it! :-) http://writerunboxed.com/2012/07/28/social-media-your-shadow-career/

By the way, I work for an author. I’m her assistant; one of a handful of jobs I’ve held over the past twenty-five years than incorporated what I most love to do: write.

Ellen August 1, 2012 at 12:27 pm

*that incorporated…

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Fantastic. THANK YOU! I think I need to work for an author.. my day job doesn’t require enough writing! xo

Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table August 1, 2012 at 5:36 am

Good for you taking the time to unplug! I did enjoy seeing the pics on IG though. :)

I’m not terrible at unplugging on vacation, but I need to do a better job of it in my everyday life. The amount of time I spend on the computer is embarrassing.

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats August 1, 2012 at 6:39 am

I’m glad you had a great, unplugged trip! This week I have been keeping track of where I have been spending my time and I never realized how much of a time suck social media really is. I never leave home without my phone and sometimes I wish I could but I feel like if I do leave without it, I am constantly thinking about it. Ugh.

Sarah @ The healthy diva August 1, 2012 at 6:59 am

It takes me a long time to unwind as well. Usually by the time we’re ready to go home then I finally feel relaxed. The only thing I never leave the home without is my water… Always take my bottle with me to stay hydrated :) P.S. keep ur eyes peeled for a package headed your way!

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:14 pm

Oh! Can’t wait! You’re amazing

nicole @ its about the journey not the destination August 1, 2012 at 7:25 am

I 100% understand. It’s soo tough to unwind when you’re so used to being ‘on’ all the time (hello Yoga – I cannot quiet my mind). I love your vacation posts, whatever they are. Do what you need to do and know your readers/friends always support you <3

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:14 pm

Thank you, Nicole!

Tamara August 1, 2012 at 7:26 am

This. Was. Beautiful! Thanks for sharing your thoughts about unplugging, letting go, and leaving behind the stuff that doesn’t matter. Very thought-provoking!

I’m able to relax fairly well, and have been trying to start a meditation practice. I recently got an AWESOME book called One Moment Meditation (this short video by the author is a great intro: http://youtu.be/F6eFFCi12v8). Highly recommend both.

I don’t leave home without my iPhone, SPF15 Chapstick (blue tube), and migraine meds. You know, just in case. :)

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:14 pm

Thank you for the feedback and for the link and info. Meditation may be good for me.

Tamara August 1, 2012 at 12:35 pm

Absolutely! I blogged about the book and video a bit, too. I think meditation would be good for almost anyone. And since I started doing the “basic minute” (his prelude to “one moment meditation,” which takes literally a moment), I can tell you that it’s easy to make time for it and that it clearly has beneficial, peaceful effects.

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Great! Thank you for the link.

Tamara August 1, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Any time. I know we’re virtual friends from afar, but you’ve given me many great ideas, inspired me, and made me smile and laugh too many times to count. I’m sorry to see that you’re in a bit of a funk, although I know it happens to all of us and is a normal part of this life thing. Still, if I could give back even a little bit of what you’ve given to me, well that would just rule.

Colleen August 1, 2012 at 7:49 am

I totally understand what you’re talking! I find especially since I’ve gotten my iPhone, I tend to spend any free minute checking my mail or checking Facebook. I’m going on vacation myself next week, and I’m seriously considering leaving my laptop and phone at home, or at least turned off for the trip. life is too short as it is, I feel like the minutes sometimes Slipaway when I am constantly checking social media.

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:15 pm

I say leave it–it’ll do you good!

LG August 1, 2012 at 8:16 am

I totally get this post. I recently finished the book “The Power of Now”, and while some of it was crazy out-there and had little basis in reality, a large part of it focused on being present. Enjoying the “right now”. Because it’s really all we have.

We’ve been to watch fireworks a few times this year and I notice there are always several people trying to take pictures or videos of the fireworks. I thought about doing this too, but then I realized that I really wanted to take it all in “right now” – enjoy the complete experience and create a real memory instead of trying to capture it on digitally for sometime in the future when it won’t mean near as much, all while missing the beauty of the “present”.

Being “in the moment” has helped me so much with reducing anxiety, and even reducing overeating, because it seems what I’m looking for with that is a “real” experience. So I’ve been trying to focus on breathing and focus on my senses when a craving hits. Oddly enough, it seems to work quite a bit of the time!

Thanks for this thoughtful post. :0)

Great point. I think I’ll check that book out. I have been a bookworm lately, anyway, and a book like that sounds interesting.

DUDE, what you said about fireworks? So guilty. Why did I take the photos of the fireworks? That was so stupid. Thank you for pointing that out.

Glad being in the moment has helped with so many things. I am going to try to remember that. Thank you.

I agree with LG, Power of Now is a great book. It would be a good companion to One Moment Meditation. One of my favorite bits of wisdom lately comes from Power of Now. The author is asked, “how do I let go of negativity?” and he replies, “How do you let go of a hot coal that you’re holding in your hand? You drop it.” When he puts it that way and you start to think about it and even TRY it, you’ll be amazed at how simple – and effective – this can really be!

Anyway, hugs to you, J!! <3

Such a simple concept but such a hard task. I will try to remember that. Just drop it. Thank you!

I am seriously with you. I’m trying to make a concerted effort to unplug (put the phone away COMPLETELY) on the weekends. I need to turn up the ringer in case somebody calls with an emergency. I missed a call from an IRL friend when she needed help — she broke her ankle. I still feel horrible that my efforts to unplug and relax lead to me not being able to help her. If I could just shut off texts and internet, that would be fabulous.

Your Costa Rica trip sounds like my Boston trip. I instagrammed (food mostly), but I didn’t take any actual photos, besides those pretty things. I put an “out of office” on my gmail as well as my work e-mail and though I had the technology to respond, I did not respond to any e-mails that weren’t absolutely necessary to respond to … and as it turned out, there WERE none of those. The auto-responder took care of that. And as far as my auto responder goes, I always have the caveat of “please allow 48 hrs to respond” on there.

I think my favorite trip this year was cabrewing because I was unplugged ALL weekend. My phone barely worked in north-eastern Iowa, and I didn’t bring my camera or laptop because I didn’t want to risk losing either of them.

So yes — short answer — it takes effort for me to relax!

Your trip looked absolutely amazing! I was wondering where you guys flew into. It seems that they do not have a nearby airport. I would love to sell this place to my husband for our 5 year. :)

Thanks!!

We flew into San Jose and it was a 4 hour drive to Puerto Viejo. Very worth the drive–escaping civilization :)

This trip looks amazing!!! I am so jealous and wish I could travel here ASAP! I have trouble winding down. I am always thinking of the next thing to do and what to do tomorrow. Cant wait to see more pictures!

WOW. You hit a nerve with me here! In the past year (well, since I started blogging) I have become WAY too connected. And when I got my iPhone in April and discovered Instagram, it just got worse. I am on it all the time- and really hate that. I tell myself to stop and just get away from the technology, but it’s hard. I’m really glad that I didn’t have a blog when I got married or went on my Honeymoon, because I would have probably missed out on a lot, thinking too much about taking photos and how I would write about them (sad, but true). I just went to Colorado for a week and took FOUR POSTS to re-cap it. That’s ridiculous! I took my DSLR, iPad and iPhone on the trip- but really only used my iPhone (way too much) and my DSLR just 2 different days. I don’t know what our obsession is with documenting every single thing, posting on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, blog, etc., knowing that WE won’t go back and read it again. Are we really that starved for attention?
I’m calling myself out here BIG TIME because I think I need to take a break- big time. Reading your thoughts made me realize that even more.
I pretty much don’t know what the word “relax” means- but it sure sounds nice!

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:21 pm

I am happy it struck you. It really is quite striking. What the hell do we need to be posting so much shit for anyway???

Jess @ Blonde Ponytail August 1, 2012 at 10:00 am

Okay, now Costa Rico is on my bucket list.

Excellent point about removing oneself from social media–it can feel obligatory at times as I am trying to grow my blog/brand, but I DO LOVE it too. Just have to remember the IRL peeps that deserve more attention!!

Alicia August 1, 2012 at 11:07 am

This was such an amazing post!!! It’s something I’m dealing with in my personal life as well….addicted to social media… :) My boyfriend is the complete opposite and I honestly believe that’s one of the reasons I love him so much. He’s about quality time and is never on the internet, the phone, or watching TV. So it’s something I also need to be mindful of!!! I love how you perfectly described it.

It always takes me a little bit to unwind and let things go… I have a problem with being wound too tight… but I realize it and I’m working on it. :)

Glad you had such an amazing time on your trip!!

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:22 pm

The four of us REALLY need to get together. I think me & M are the same as you and Steve. Sorry I haven’t called–my Gma died that weekend we were gonna go to the market! But perhaps next Sunday (not this one)? Ill text you :)

betty August 1, 2012 at 11:28 am

LOVE this post. i feel like everyone is so connected.. i’ll go out to dinner and see more than a few tables with A WHOLE FAMILY on their phones.. all four or five.. no one is saying ANYTHING to eachother.. (or maybe they’re just text eachother) but i also feel strongly about this. i hate being in mid conversation and the person i’m talking to gets on fb or IG.. i’m sure i’ve done it before, but i try to not stay glued to my phone at all times. my parents use to have a ton of land with a TINY little cabin on it.. and my dad would make us leave all electronics at home.. even though at that point it was just my compact CD player.. if i didnt want to hang out and work on the farm, i could go inside and read my book.. that was it. so i love your post.. i think its good to realize how connected we are and how its not always a good thing…

there i went on my own tangent!

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:24 pm

Agreed. The restaurant thing bugs me. I have tried to leave my phone in my purse when eating out.. but I am not always good at it. Lame of me. I love you!

ali August 1, 2012 at 11:32 am

Welcome back! Love this post, and it is something I definitely needed to read today. I always have trouble relaxing, and shutting my mind off. I am always thinking about what I have/need to do and what it happening next. I have a hard time living in the moment.

And the one thing I never leave my house without – CARMEX. Never, ever, ever. I’m addicted for sure.

Have a great day Janetha!

Janetha August 1, 2012 at 12:24 pm

I miss you!

Heather {ModernMealsforTwo} August 1, 2012 at 11:56 am

I totally know how you feel. It takes me at least 24 hours into vacation (like once we get there and get settled) to truly relax. But I love that feeling when it comes. I also love being totally unconnected. I’m not as IN to the online world (just a simple blog I update a few times a week, a strong interest in Facebook and some Pinning) but I love being on a vacation that takes me out of the world. No phone. No email. Just relaxation.

Annette@FitnessPerks August 1, 2012 at 12:26 pm

I LOOOOOVVEEEE this! SO refreshing.

This is how I feel too-I hate ‘feeling’ connected to everything all.the.time. It’s totally exhausting!

But I love to blog, but only when I LOVE it, do I do it. I too, enjoyed a trip to NOTHINGing (no cell or internet service) with the houseboat trip to Lake Powell. AHHHHmazing. It was the best thing that could’ve happened to me then!!

allison August 1, 2012 at 1:08 pm

I’m currently planning a trip to Costa Rica – looking forward to reading your review and posts! :)

Not being connected during a vacation, or even a weekend, is one of the hardest things for me, but it feels so peaceful when you do.

Susan August 1, 2012 at 2:59 pm

I am so happy you were able to experience that, but even more I hope you are able to recreate it! I think it’s not so much the connectedness that is hurting us, but that we aren’t able to focus on just one thing anymore. That was one of the great takeaways I had from my trip to Cape Breton – just simply being present. I had access to all the usual distractions, but I chose to focus on what was happening in front of me in that moment, and it was SO rewarding and educational. The distractions are useful for when there is no other stimulation, but it’s good to know that life can be just as fulfilling without it. Since that trip, I have been trying to bring that focus to my every day life. It’s a little harder, but it has helped me maintain that wonderful since of calm that I achieved on that trip.

LOVE YOU!!

Janetha August 2, 2012 at 11:25 am

I really really really love you.

Kerryne August 1, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Unplugging is HARD but I am so glad that you were able to do that and enjoy yourself. I’m sure glad you’re back though ;) I missed you like crazy!
