introducing: move more in may!

by Janetha on April 30, 2012

in goals

hey guys!

well, it’s here. the last day of adventurous april. tomorrow i will be posting my closing thoughts, all of the final participant submissions, and the random winner of the custom case of chobani.

but today i want to talk about the future. the very close future… close as in tomorrow. or today, depending on when you are reading this. i want to talk about may. i have a month of may challenge for me—and for you!!

you know i like my monthly challenges (and my alliteration!) so you had to see this coming. i am challenging myself AND all of you to move more during the whole month of may.  the reason i am giving myself this challenge is because i am very sedentary. i know, i know, this is coming from the girl who has a blog called meals & MOVES.  but truth be told, i am a slug. you wouldn’t know it from reading my blog—i mean, i do exercise 5 times a week on average. however, i also sit at a desk for 40+ hours a week. what’s worse? usually 4 hours go by from morning to afternoon before i even stand up. i know. that’s bad. you don’t need to tell me, i already know. I NEED TO MOVE MORE.

image

the move more in may challenge is designed to get me off my ass and onto my feet. this means in the morning, during the day, and after work. typically the only time i am really moving around is during my workout of the day.  if i am not at the gym, i am always sitting or laying.  want proof? i wake up (from laying position), drive to work (sitting in my car), sit at my desk for the majority of the 8 hours i am there, sit some more on my drive home, sit on the couch after my workout and dinner, and then lay back down in bed… only to repeat the process again the next day.

a lot of people work on their feet, run errands throughout the day, lift their kiddos up and down (have you SEEN tina’s arms? she told me that it is from lifting her cute kids!), take their dogs on walks, or all of the above. but me? none of the above. heck—i am so sluggish that i drop my dogs off at daycare instead of walking them during the week! by the time we (me and the dogs) get home for the day, we snuggle up on the couch together and are all very content with our sluggish selves. marshall is the only un-sluggish one of the bunch.. he works on his feet all day and does lots of heavy lifting. the heaviest thing i lift all day is my pen. or my fork.. during lunch.

i think i have rambled on enough about why i need to move more. now i just need to DO IT! and i need your support, so i want you to move more in may, too! each day, i would like you to comment on the move more in may challenge page telling me how you moved that day OUTSIDE OF YOUR OFFICIAL DAILY WORKOUT.  yes, that’s right, we aren’t counting our workouts for this challenge.  that’s the whole point—we are already moving during our workouts. this is for all the other moves of the day.  be creative. try something different.

here are some ideas:

  • take a walk in the morning or evening
  • do pushups during TV commercials
  • do squats and lunges in your kitchen while dinner cooks
  • skip down the hallway at work
  • walk around the block during your lunch break (totally just typed “walk around the blog”…)

here are the rules/directions:

  • you can submit ONE entry for each day in may (31 total entries possible.)
  • you will submit your entry on the official challenge page.
  • your entry needs to tell me how you moved more for that day.
  • you can log past days if you can’t get to a computer right away, but remember: one comment=one entry=one day.
  • be honest! we don’t like cheaters or liars.
  • random winners will be selected from comments with time stamps from the individual prize period

yes, i said winners! so, yes, of course there are prizes. there are always prizes!

I’m in! I ran/walk a 5k yesterday, and I still have 20 lbs to lose so I could use the action to get there.

meggi April 30, 2012 at 7:17 pm

I love this! I work from home so I am usually walking from my bedroom, to my computer, to the couch, to take my pup to pee, to the fridge… I could definitely use some more moves! :)

Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio April 30, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Awesome challenge!! Love your blog.

Meredith @ DareYouTo April 30, 2012 at 7:21 pm

Love this idea to fit in extra movement. I do workout daily, but too much of my day is spent sitting down! Thanks for the motivation to get moving

Elisse April 30, 2012 at 7:37 pm

I love this challenge. I read this article yesterday: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/29/sunday-review/stand-up-for-fitness.html?_r=1&ref=health, and it really got me thinking about this. Not just general fitness and working out, but small things throughout the day. I’m trying to get my boyfriend on board too!

Maggie April 30, 2012 at 7:47 pm

Love this! This is an awesome challenge. Sometimes I feel so sedentary because I realize my workout (no matter how tough/long) was the only time I moved all day………not good!

Dusty @ Running to Healthy April 30, 2012 at 7:50 pm

I’m in and am super excited.

Laura @joyful shimmy April 30, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Awesome! I’m so excited to do this I really need to get my butt back in gear after a sluggish April.

Elizabeth @ reads recipes runs April 30, 2012 at 8:12 pm

LOVE this idea. Having a puppy has been an awesome way for me to move more. I’m the same at work, I try to drink a ridiculous amount of water so at least I am getting up to pee haha.

Sana April 30, 2012 at 8:15 pm

What a great idea! My office is awesome, every hour people are taking laps around the office and they don’t keep water at the desk so that they have to get up to drink!

lindsay April 30, 2012 at 8:16 pm

you had with me alliteration and lulu. My two loves. I’m in. Youre too fun!

Bonnie April 30, 2012 at 8:38 pm

Wahoo! Love this idea, J! Even got me commenting on vacation I love it so much. ;) My personal fitness/life motto’s are: 1. Move More and 2. Eat Real Food. So this is RIGHT in line with what I believe about life! …will be participating. ;) You are so generous!

Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile April 30, 2012 at 9:00 pm

Love this idea! You always have great challenges :D

Katie @ Talk Less, Say More April 30, 2012 at 9:11 pm

i LOVE this! I could definitely use to MOVE more outside of my usual workouts. Totally on board for this!

Carrie April 30, 2012 at 9:26 pm

I’m in! I so need this! I sit on my butt for a disturbing number of hours each day.

Missy April 30, 2012 at 9:33 pm

This is a great challenge – but I could not in good conscious enter because I already do these things and have been for a long time. I challenged myself a few years ago to move more as I sit at a microscope. I bought the Omron HJ-112 pedometer and that was all I needed! I made it my goal/challenge to get over 10000 steps daily. I now get about 19 to 22000 every day. But I walk on breaks in the parking garage at work, before work and when I get home. I stand at the computer at home (it is on the bar). I do squats, lunges and other little movements during the day. So I will cheer along but this is not a challenge for me as it is my daily routine now!
But I will strongly advise you to get a good pedometer (love my Omron) and wear it for one “normal” day – that is, don’t try to do more just do what you normally do. You will be FLOORED at how few steps you take in a day. So really, that is the best thing to have! As a matter of fact, I will gladly throw in one of these pedometers to the winner (or to you Janetha!) Maybe I’ll trade you a Contigo bottle… LOL!!!
Great challenge!

Heather April 30, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Is this challenge open to Canada?

Jocelyn @ Peace Love Nutrition April 30, 2012 at 10:09 pm

Fun challenge! I try to make sure I move for at least 20 minutes every single day

Sarah April 30, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Great idea!

The thing is, my problem is pretty much the exact opposite. I’m an RN and work 13 hours shifts, 12 hours of which are spent running around like a crazy person trying to get things done. So when it comes to my time off, I just sit on my butt and do very little. Not good for the waistline or the fitness… Not sure what my plan of action is going to be since I’m inherently lazy!

Kat @ Balancing Kat April 30, 2012 at 10:27 pm

Love, love this. I too am semi-sedentary. Can’t wait to log in my moves!

Lindsay @ The Lean Green Bean April 30, 2012 at 10:44 pm

oh you know i’m all over this!!! i mean, did you see my new treadmill desk?! hello, 3 miles while reading blogs and doing foodie penpals stuff this morning instead of just sitting on my ass. love it! also love that i will see you friday!

Neil April 30, 2012 at 11:11 pm

Every year I SWEAR I am going to start riding my bike to work. It’s 5 minutes from home to work, but about 20 back. It’s a damnable hill. You’ve inspired me to start tomorrow. Thx.

BTW – you got scoots. Serious game with those sprints tonight.

i love this giveaway!!and what’s the time choosing the winner of birthday prizes?:)

Blog is the New Black May 1, 2012 at 2:55 am

I like this challenge. Now I have in my head the song, “I like to move it, move it!”

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva May 1, 2012 at 3:58 am

ohmygosh I’m so excited!!!! I was pondering as to what challenge May would bring us. This is perfect. I am a uni student so spend the majority of my day sitting still, or lazing on the grass talking to my friends (when I really should be studying). I do workout but I could really get more movement into my day. I think I’m going to start small with desk stretches the first day :)

Katie @ Peace Love & Oats May 1, 2012 at 5:03 am

I LOVE this! Being a student I sit a lot – in class or studying, especially right now during finals!

Juliette May 1, 2012 at 5:53 am

Love this! Just got my cast off, so I’m ready to really get moving again :)

Brenda May 1, 2012 at 6:45 am

Your day sounds like my day… I’m in I love the commercial idea!

Errign May 1, 2012 at 7:42 am

Love that this is starting on the one day a week that my ass is parked in a desk chair for 6 hours a day – challenge accepted :)

Emily R May 1, 2012 at 7:50 am

This is a great idea. I, too, work in an office environment where I’ll sit for 4+ hours before ever having to get up and move. Not good!

Jessica May 1, 2012 at 8:03 am

I really need to do this. I was just bitching to my best friend this weekend about how I’m going to be a hunchback when I’m old because I spend 90% of my day sitting in front of a computer or tv or steering wheel.

Tamara May 1, 2012 at 8:13 am

This is great, Janetha! I have a back spasm and I think it’s from overtraining and yet undermoving the rest of the time (and also from neglecting my mobility, foam rolling, stretching, etc.). I will definitely participate in Move More in May!!

Lindsay @ Running the Windy City May 1, 2012 at 8:29 am

What a great challenge, I love it! I seriously go crazy sitting at my desk all day so this challenge will give me a reason to experiment with new ways to MOVE during the day :)

Linda May 1, 2012 at 8:37 am

I love this! Your December workout posting helped me a ton, and now with this I’ve already started brainstorming fun ideas (I sit on my butt at a desk 9 hrs a day, commute roundtrip 3 hours a day…that’s a lot of sitting).

sherice@foodieluvsfitness May 1, 2012 at 8:46 am

I just found our own little Lululemon store where I live.. It was meant to be considering 1. they don’t advertise 2. it’s tucked down a little street downtown and 3. it’s in an upstairs of a building with only the logo sign hanging out front. I about died. I grabbed my sisters are and said “omg, look what I see” she was like “huh” totally in the dark.. So I had to school her. I’m planning on buying my first piece soon. And I’m sure there will be more :)

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning May 1, 2012 at 8:49 am

I move a lot in my workouts (like you) but know that there are certain days where I spend more time sitting than anything else- and I hate that! Plus, it makes me sore quads feel even MORE sore after a morning workout.
I need to spend more time stretching… big time. I guess that would count as moving more, right? :)

The Delicate Place (@misathemeb) May 1, 2012 at 9:44 am

i am so fidgety lol. i have to sit at work to do my cell work but then i’m on my feet to run plate assays and i’m usually up and down about every 1-2 hours either to pee or go back into the lab. it helps that my desk is outside of it so it keeps me moving more on average than the office worker i suppose.

i’ve always just been a cannot sit still person lol though i only workout formally 3-4x. maybe i just don’t like that i have to shower more i dunno haha.

Brittany @ Britt's Blurbs May 1, 2012 at 9:45 am

Love this idea! Working as a Marketing Intern I’m constantly sitting throughout the day, only to come home, relax, and sit some more. Can’t wait to get myself movin’ with your help!

Calee May 1, 2012 at 10:44 am

I love this!

I have a standing desk but have been coveting Lindsay at ThevLean Green Bean’s new treaddesk.

Inwascjust saying that I should cancel Netflix for this very reason.

Thanks for another great motivational challenge!

Calee May 1, 2012 at 10:45 am

Also, typing on an iPad is apparently not my forte.

Jess @ Blonde Ponytail May 1, 2012 at 10:55 am

I love this challenge Janetha! I will be srpeading the word–I was late to the Adventurous April party and failed to pull the trigger, so I will make up for that!

You know who helps me move more? My active pup Cooper!

Amy May 1, 2012 at 11:00 am

great challenge-totally up for it! not traveling so much in may so i will def focus on this!

Annette@FitnessPerks May 1, 2012 at 11:05 am

I LOVE this!! I AM up for the challenge! :)

Coley May 1, 2012 at 11:30 am

What a great idea! Love this janetha! Count me in!

Christin May 1, 2012 at 12:05 pm

SO EXCITED TO DO THIS!! I just added it to my blog as well… :0

Katie @ Katie Moves May 1, 2012 at 12:57 pm

I love this challenge! I’ll be sure to add it to my blog- I was just writing about how I have been trying to incorporate some exercise while I’m at work and need to get up and move around! I’ll be sure to continue

Linda May 1, 2012 at 1:18 pm

May 1st : Got up 4 times from my desk and did 25 jumping jacks each time for a total of 100

Angela @ Happy Fit Mama May 1, 2012 at 1:49 pm

I’ll move anything and everything for a chance at a Lululemon gift card! I’m in!!
