i was recently sent a batch of nuts about granola’s feature flavor of the month.

peanut butter & jelly granola! well, it is also referred to as “college staple”.. but since i didn’t exactly go to much college (unless going community college on and off for seven years to get a two year degree counts) i am going to call this PB&J granola a LIFE staple for me! i grew up eating peanut butter and jam (yes, JAM, not jelly! more specifically: momma b’s homemade raspberry jam) sandwiches. or toast. or pancakes. PB&J goes on everything. that’s why i knew that this PB&J granola would be a hit in my mouth.

because i can’t leave anything alone, i decided to play around with this granola and make a recipe instead of eating it straight from the bag.
okay, okay, you got me. i did eat quite a bit straight from the bag.. but i still wanted to make up a recipe. i had big plans after work yesterday. since i didn’t have to blog (thanks to three tip thursday) and daylight was on my side, i decided to whip up a recipe that had been floating around in my brain since first receiving the PB&J granola.
i initially wanted to make PB&J protein bites. my big plan was to use four ingredients.

i figured i could mix the granola with protein powder, peanut butter, and jam to create tasty, no bake protein bites. sounds simple enough, right?
i got started and quickly realized that i didn’t have nearly enough granola to go around.. so i bulked it up a bit with oat bran. a little extra fiber never hurt, anyway!

once the original four ingredients were mixed with the oat bran, i had a bowl of crumbles. delicious crumbles, but crumbles none the less.

i decided that the recipe needed a little moisture, so i started adding almond milk to the bowl. well, i must have got a tad too heavy-handed, because i ended up with a mixture that was just too runny to form into no bake protein bites. oops.

because i wasn’t about to waste this delicious batter (how do i know it was delicious? oh, because i kept eating it by the spoonful…) i decided to do what any normal recipe experiementer (made that word up) would do: put it in the oven!
i added an egg, some baking powder, and a pinch of salt to the mixture and decided to bake it into cookies AND bars, to see what would work best.. or if they would both be a disaster.
the cookies went in for 10 minutes and the bars went in for 18.. i was happy to see they both came out looking like something edible! (hey, you never know when it comes to baking.. the oven can be a tricky thing.)

[pinit]

they looked good, but what counts is taste and texture. i sampled both the cookies and the bars. much to my (pleasant) surprise, both items turned out SENSATIONAL! we are talking delicious, peanut butter-and-jammy, protein packed bites of amazing.
i love that i didn’t have to add any extra sweetener to these. the hit of honey from the granola paired with the all-fruit jam made these treats perfectly sweet.

i was really shocked that the random ingredients i combined on a whim created such a soft, cakey texture.

the bits of college staple PB & J granola throughout the bars and cookies were definitely what made the recipe unique.

and that, my friends, was my great mistake.

not bad for a treat, right?
my friends at nuts about granola have offered to give away a bag of their college staple peanut butter & jelly granola to one of you.

i will pick a random commenter from this post on monday!
i don’t know about you guys, but i am super pumped for the weekend! we have lots of plans. we are heading to the jazz game tonight, then to see danny tanner tomorrow! oh, i mean bob sagat.. but he will always be danny tanner to me. can’t wait to see him live. i also have a couple workouts lined up, the usual sunday grocery shopping & meal planning, and maybe we will have time to catch the hunger games. although, i wouldn’t mind waiting to see it since i hate crowds. it’s supposed to be real warm this weekend, so i hope to take the pups to play outside somewhere, and i might even bust out the bike for a bike ride.
what is on your weekend agenda?

I LOVE GRANOLA SOOOO MUCH. I eat it with everything I possibly can! This sounds delicious :)
I’m teaching my first Body Pump class tomorrow followed by working all day Saturday and Sunday. I’ve had the past two days off though and I love my job so I cannot complain!
Those look SO GOOD. I love your recipes. Every time I try to experiment, something always goes incredibly wrong. This weekend I’m finally going back home to San Diego to visit my friends and family. I’ve been in school in West Virginia, and have been too poor to fly back for over a year!!
I plan on sleeping in!! Running outside! Eating sushi
holy yum those look awesome!!
Mmm…that combo sounds delish after a long run, which I have scheduled Sunday. And the cookies: divine.
Going to Banff for a row-mantic weekend with the hubs. Yay!!!
PS I have 8:The Mormon Proposition on hold at the library…looking forward to it.
I read this as I sat here eating a tablespoon of crunchy peanutbutter dipped in jam. :-) It must be fate.
these cookies/bars look awesome! i love that they are not overly sweetened :)
I’m going to vegas for the weekend! Soon as I can get off work, that is! I’m recovering from my first marathon (that takes WEEKS, right?!), so I’ll be resting by the pool, guiltfree!
I’d really like to make the pbj bars!!
Those bars look so good! I am eating pb&j on a rice cake as we speak (mu favorite snack lately!). I will be doing a lot of running this weekend, and hopefully some relaxing too!
wow, this truly does look like a great mistake that you made!! these things look so good! i’ve always been a huge fan of PB&J!
I love how a fantastic recipe can come from playing around with a few really tasty simple ingredients. I was doing the same thing yesterday and ended up with an amazing oatmeal cookie with pretty much everything yummy inside: nuts, dried fruit, seeds, coconut flakes, chocolate…all there. This weekend I have to really hit the books! I know it’s boring, but it’s necessary! I really want to go on college exchange next year to the US, so need to make sure I keep my grades up. Who knows…I might just be lucky enough to come to a blogger meet up. Hopefully blend will become an annual event :)
I was lucky enough to taste these today and they were pretty damn amazing
Nice work! Way to save the granola experiment. This stuff looks too good to waste…I eat PBJ like it’s my job.
Oh yum! Yo uand all your creations. Anything that is peanut butter and granola is a winner in my book! :) Happy Friday lady! Hey- what do you use to get the nutritional info posted on here? I love that. :)
Your baking “mistakes” are so much better than my baking disasters! The stats on those tasty looking treats are fantastic!!
I’ll be celebrating a friend’s 31st birthday tomorrow and while it’s not as exciting as a 30th birthday, it’s definitely not as exciting as seeing Bob Sagat! I hear he’s great – potty and foul mouthed, quite different than Mr. Tanner! Have fun!
I am always so amazed how you come up with these random recipes and they turn out great! I definitely want to try these cookies, since I’m a PBJ fanatic! :o)
Yay, love granola; those bars & cookies look awesome. Added bonus, no added sugar! ;) We are celebrating my SIL’s b-day this Sunday; always look forward getting together with Nathan’s side. Sat is cooking & relaxing day. Have a great weekend, Janetha!
Oh I love pB&J! Looks yummy….and it also made me think that maybe I’ll have oats with pb&j on top for breakfast!
Omg yes yum! Haha I’m excited to try this out asap!
Refer to instagram for what you mad me do. I NEED TO TRY THIS.
I love delicious mistakes. :)
Holy frick those look good! I don’t know if you saw my pb and j cookie fail the other day, but I need to win so I can make your working recipe. :)
Yay! These look delicious! You can make mistakes in my kitchen any day. :)
This granola sounds amazing!
Those bars look amazing, and so does the granola. Hunger Games this weekend for me!
I NEED this granola so I can make the recipe!
They look so good! I too love pb & j flavored anything.
I can’t believe you’re going to see Danny Tanner!! I am so jealous. I lived for Full House growing up (and TGIF). And I hear you- Bob Saget just reminds me of ‘tourettes guy” (know who that is?).
I was thinking when I looked at your batter that I would be happy to eat that straight from the bowl. Glad we’re on the same wavelength.
My college staple was cereal. And ice cream. Both were unlimited in our dining hall.
you read my mind here Lauren! batter would have been bliss!
p.s.
I heard “danny tanner” is actually pretty hilarious!
Love it that your random ingredients turned into something great. I’m teaching Yoga and Pilates all weekend, but also have a couple of fun outings with friends thrown in there to keep things interesting and light. Oh, and there’s some laundry to deal with, too. Ha!
Wow that granola really sounds amazing. I never would have thought to bake it anyways….usually my bakery flops turn into me just giving up!
I wish that my baking experiments turned out so delicious :)
thanks for the giveaway, j!
enjoy your weekend – you have a lot of fun plans on the agenda!
i am looking forward to sunday, esp – work (love my job); shopping with my mom, and a movie with a friend!
That granola is one more item i can add to my favorite food group – the “peanut butter” food group! YUM!
Both recipe experiments look delicious! I wish mine would turn out that good. Celebrating a friends “dirty thirty” birthday this weekend :)
some pb&j granola could certain help get me through this LAST round of finals!
These look awesome and the stats are pretty damn good too!.. And I am in loooove with mrm thanks to you. I’d say Id like to win this giveaway, but at this point, I’m certain I’ll never win one.
These look and sound amazing! Now I understand how the chocolate chip cookie was an accident! :)
I would love to try this granola. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to win some. Your cookies and bars look delicious!
I love the peanut butter and jam combo too :) The granola looks delicious!
Did you know PB&J sandwiches are the most eco friendly sandwiches? That’s just a little fun fact! That looks AMAZING!
Oh pick me! PB&J is my favorite meal! :)
PB & J is seriously one of the best combos ever. These look amazing!
That granola sounds amazing! So do your “granola bars”! I may have to try making those with what I already have at home…maybe experiment with some different flavors and whole berries, hmmm.
Love it! A great mistake indeed. :D Your spin on the granola turned out so well – I don’t think I could add and egg and some ingredients and get good bars/cookies (and for SURE I’d forget the baking powder). ;) Well done – pinning this puppy!
Excited about my very low-key weekend: Mikey’s away so after my 3 usual Sat clients tomorrow I’m going to get a pedicure (first time since our wedding 4 years ago I think!) and go out to lunch with a friend – maybe fly her new kite surfing kite on land. Woot! Then prep for the week, workout (with newly pumiced/pricked/painted toes – mine are NOT in good shape) and sleep in some Sunday. Have fun with all your plans!
I made Peanut Butter & Jam Banana Bread this week which was amazing, So by the looks of it these bars would be too! :)
That PB&J granola looks awesome!
