faults.
we all have them.
nobody is perfect.
well, some people may think they are perfect.. but they aren’t fooling anyone. except maybe themselves.
i have lots of faults. take bowling, for example. we went bowling tonight. (for alison’s birthday.. happy birthday, alison!) i bowled a 79. one of my faults is definitely being a bad bowler.
that’s okay.. life goes on.
there is one fault i have that is greater than all the rest.
i have a hard time finishing things i start.
i am notorious for starting something and then letting it fall by the wayside. i have good—no, great—intentions.. i just have a terrible habit of getting busy with other things and not going back to finish what i started.
exhibit A: wedding thank you cards.
i custom ordered the cards. i started writing them out. i even bought the stamps. and then.. BAM.. i didn’t finish the task. you would think the $150 investment would have kept me to it. not the case.
however, after reading several encouraging comments from this post, i gather that it’s not TOO late to mail the cards.. even though it’s a year and a half after the fact.
exhibit B: my resolution to touch my toes.
i had a couple new year’s resolutions for 2011. one was to touch my toes. you guys, i haven’t been trying. i am still so far from touching those toes. i could have stretched more. i could have tried harder. instead.. i did nothing. and still can’t touch my toes.
exhibit C: blog posts waiting to happen.
i have taken photos for over a dozen recipes and product reviews.. but those photos are sitting in a folder on my computer. the folder is called “to be blogged”. i should rename the folder “to sit here forever with good intentions to be blogged but will never actually be blogged”. no.. but really.. i need to publish some of these photos. especially the product reviews.
exhibit D: the 30 day challenge.
OH. remember this guy?! haha. yeah. i made it to #13. almost halfway! clearly i have a problem finishing things.
BUT…
right now, right here, i swear that i will finish three of these four things. i am ruling out the touching my toes thing because i honestly can’t force this one. i do promise that i will try harder, though, and maybe one day i will get there.
i promise to send out my thank you cards. (this will make my mom happy.)
i promise to publish all my pending product reviews and recipes.
i promise to finish the 30 day challenge.
starting… now.
day 14: your earliest memory.
does breakfast this morning count? because there are times i swear i can’t remember anything before that. i have a horrible memory.
i thought long and hard about this one.. and my earliest memory involves a pink, slicky night gown.
it was my favorite. i wore this night gown every night—or at least, that’s how i remember it. i guess this next photo proves otherwise… for some reason i don’t remember that purple number.
anyway, my earliest memory is of the pink slicky night gown. or, as we called it at my house, my pink nighty. i loved it. i distinctly remember spilling water on my nighty and thought i could easily dry it with my mom’s blow dryer.
i went into the bathroom, plugged the blow dryer in and fired away at the wet spot on my nighty. much to my horror, a hole burned right through my precious pink nighty! i was devastated. i still remember the horrible feeling i had from ruining something i loved so much.
but, wouldn’t you know it, life went on.
and here i am today.
and yes.. THAT is my earliest memory. hey, you guys already knew i was random. this is just further proof. i am a freaking weirdo.
anyway..while i was writing this post, i thought of ANOTHER thing i started and never finished! my photo-a-day blog. i got to mid-june and just.. stopped.. and i am pissed off at myself for it. i was going to make a book from all the photos in 2011. i think i will try again in 2012.. but no promises i will finish ;)
to be honest, i feel a lot better already, just getting this off my chest. please hold me to the promises i made in this post, okay? thanks.
and, because this is supposed to be a food blog, i will show you my dinner.
quinoa stuffed peppers!
smothered in ketchup.
for these, i combined one large ground chicken breast (about 1/2 pound– i grind my own in my food processor) with ~1.5 cups cooked quinoa (1/2 cup uncooked), 3 egg whites, 3/4 cup salsa, 1/2 diced red onion, a knorr vegetable dip packet, and 1/2 tsp each of thyme, garlic powder, black pepper and sea salt.
first i boiled the pepper halves in water for about 4 minutes to soften them up, then i stuffed each half with the mixture and baked at 375 degrees for 40 minutes. this made eight pepper halves and one serving was a whole pepper.. i went with half a red and half an orange.
each half clocked in at 100 calories, 14g carbs, 10g protein, 3g fiber, and less than 1g fat. can’t wait for leftovers for lunch!
check ya later.
Qs~

I remember the 30 Day Challenge b/c I started it too (never had any intention of doing more than a few days worth of it) but glad you picked it back up.
what is one thing you started and never finished? = I thought that I wanted to be a personal trainer. I ordered the materials but after reading them…was so….bored by them. I guess I won’t be a trainer ever and that’s ok!
I was wondering what happened to the PT thing Averie!! (sorry for being a snoop)
Oh shnikies……. I have a very long list of things I started and haven’t finished. Let’s see- I ahve untouched baby books for my boys. I also am working on my New Year’s Resolution from last year- being “on time”. The list goes on and on……
You’re picutres of you as a little girl as too cute. And that dinner……. Yum. I need to copy you!
Earliest memory? I drank bubbles by accident one day. I had a cup of sprite and I was blowing bubbles from a cup of bubble soap. Well…I think you can figure the rest out. Whoops. I hope you finish the photo a day in 2012! I think that would be so cool to have. And the peppers look so tasty!
haha, when i started reading this blog post, j, i thought of the 30 day challenge…and then you had it on your list! too funny.
i used to start crafty-projects when i was little and never finish them – embroidery, rug hooking, etc. then i got into knitting and ditched the rest of the crafts!
i actually can’t think of anything i’ve started and not finished – sorry! that’s the goal-freak in me.
and i remember you’re touch-the-toes goal from last january! just focus on all the fitness accomplishments you HAVE done this year – the mud run, hot yoga, strength training – you’ve had a lot of successes!
haha, oh JG. If I had a dollar for how many things I’ve started and not finished, I’d be a millionaire and probably not blogging. Just kidding, I still would. I think sometimes we have gret ambitions, life just gets in the way. But at least its a good life, eh?
Love you and miss you.
Those nutrition stats on the bell peppers look great. I imagine the egg white helps with the binding of the mix and adds some clean protein. Great idea, I will have to give it a try.
I actually laughed out loud at the “being a bad bowler is one of my faults”. Not only do I not finish stuff, a lot of the time I don’t even start! I’m really good at making lists, though.
girl, don’t feel too bad about the thank you cards. i did the same thing, except my excuse is that nate wouldn’t get me the addresses to the people from his side of the family (well, friends…family all got their cards) and therefore i just COULDN’T write the cards. right? right! :)
I still have to write a ton of thank you e-mails to people who sent me gifts when I got sick and I haven’t yet. I feel awful about it daily. Which I’m sure was not the original intention of their gift. So I get you on the thank you cards. But on the bright side, if that’s your biggest fault, I’d say you’re doing pretty good ;) Love you!!
The picture of you in your pink rollers and pink nighty is the cutest thing ever. You can accomplish everything on your list! I’m also horrible at starting things but not finishing them. Currently, it is writing email responses (I think I have ten… oh geez) and finishing a project for a friend. What helps me is literally scheduling time in to work on it. And sticking with it–it’s like an appointment. But, I agree, it’s hard! There are too many other things.
I had quinoa stuffed peppers last night too!
I finish EVERYTHING that I start- and you know what? That’s probably my biggest fault- I’m way too hard on myself. When I commit to something, I feel like I have to do it, even if I no longer want to or need to. It’s just this stubborn perfectionist thing I have (drives me nuts sometimes).
Earliest memory- seeing ET in the movie theater in 1982! I was 2 1/2 and remember it vividly! :)
i always start things but then don’t finish. i HATE doing that. we haven’t sent our thank you’s yet either. it’s only been ~3 months. but my mother in law started asking about them ~2 weeks after the wedding. and we still haven’t written a single one.
This might be a silly question, but how exactly did you grind the chicken? Raw chicken in processor. That’s it? It sounds a little sticky but if you say it works I’ll have to try!
Yes–sounds crazy–but that’s ALL you do. I never buy pre-ground turkey, chicken, or beef anymore.
I don’t know if this was necessarily my earliest memory, but when I was about 4, I was in a mall with my mom and her friend who had a daughter the same age as me. We were sitting near one of those fountains that people throw money into. I reached over into the water because I wanted to get the pennies and flipped into the fountain. My mom ended up having to buy me all new clothes because it was the middle of winter and I was soaking wet. At least we were already in the mall.
Awww! That picture of you in the pink night gown with rollers in your hair is super cute! :)
I am the worst at starting things and then never finishing them. I feel like I do that all the time. I really need to stop and just finish things already. Sometimes I lack the motivation.
girl you are not alone on this, there are so many projects, ideas, we have started on our blog and have not kept up with. it can be hard, as things are changing and things get pushed aside
I am horrible at starting things and never finishing them. I am also a not so great bowler. Especially in comparison to Scott.
my son is 3.5. I am still working on his scrapbook. A page every 6 months or so seems my average.
Stuffed peppers are one dish I haven’t made yet this fall but I love – this version looks great!
I do the SAME thing for starting things and never finishing. Especially blog posts! I actually started making nut butter a couple weeks ago and my food processor broke in the process. So I put it in a cup and put it in the fridge. We got a new processor but it’s still sitting in the fridge… hmmm
YUM, those stuffed peppers look delish! My earliest memory’s are of my oldest sister and her then boyfriend (now husband). They took me everywhere with them. I was 4, and would spend a lot of time at his parents house picking raspberries. I was also the only one allowed to wear his cowboy hat. Special. I know. :)
I am SO with you here! I started the hundred pushup challenge after reading about it on your blog … a while ago … still on day 3.
We have a spare bedroom that’s my craft room. AKA it’s chock full of all the projects I don’t finish. Don’t get me wrong … I make and finish a LOT of things, but I have a lot of unfinished works in progress. Case in point? My Roseanne granny square afghan I started in 2007.
Don’t feel so bad…I started an anniversary scrap book for Shane and I 3 years ago when we got married. Now I’m not ambitious enough to fill a scarp book, so I went with 1 page – front and back – per year. Except this year I made it and completely forgot about finishing it. I even gave it to him and then when he opened it I noticed I forgot to put the captions next to the pictures. Doh!
And you WILL finish these!! You can doooo it :D
i forgive you just because you posted that amazingness of quinoa stuffed pepps
You don’t fall through on everything…you’re actually kinda great at co-hosting!
My earliest memory: Kind of holiday related. I remember when I was about 8 years old, waking up on Christmas Eve and sneaking into the living room. Only to find my PARENTS and not Santa, putting together my Barbie mansion. Heartbroken!! They made me promise not to ruin it for Katy. I kept THAT promise, but ruined the surprise for all my friends as soon as we got back from winter break. Whoops.
It’s kind of funny, but with certain things (races, for example) if I say I’m going to do it, I internalize the pressure and it’s SO not fun anymore so I never end up even getting halfway there. I have a pattern of this with a lot of things… working on it!
1. My own blog. Hahah I’ve just been crazy busy trying to study the last few days. Once I get my life in a routine again I’ll be fine. I need to find a balance of work/study/working out/and breathing and I’m finding it kinda hard.
2. My first memory would have to be my favorite white cowgirl boots. I wore them with everything to anywhere.. We were inseparable. Except I don’t know what ever happened to them!
I can soooooo relate!!! This is I’ve of my (most frustrating) faults too. House projects, blog posts, a screenplay, craft projects, ect…
My earliest memories are more of patterns and textures of my family’s houses. I think anyway.
I was sort of going thru the same thing the other day, while looking at my yearly bucket list. Ride a tandem bike, go to Europe for my 30th birthday, run a 5k, go to a steelers game. Welp, tandem bike ride is done and I ran the 5k on a treadmill but not at an event. Hmm, the others were really starting to piss me off that I had nothing booked. But alas, I never let myself down and in 11 days..I’m off to Europe for my b-day! You should see my facial excitement. I could run on rainbows right now! The Steelers game may have to wait since my bank account hates me right now.
Earliest memory, probably my dog tinkerbell we had while we lived with my Grandma. I have a lot, I just can’t remember what came first.
I think one of my biggest faults is being too much of a perfectionist/blaming myself for anything that goes wrong. I have really been improving on this but I’m still a work in progress. We all are. :)
One of my earliest memories was from New Year’s Eve one year. I remember my mom was making me some hot chocolate on the stove. She shut off the burner and moved the pot to the back. She told me that the burner was hot and to stay away from it. Needless to say, I didn’t believe her and pressed three fingers on my hand right on the burner. I spend the evening at the New Year’s Eve party with my hand in a cup of ice from McDonalds. lol.
Oops–spent not spend. I am such a grammar queen. lol.
Having been in school for the last year, my list of things I need to do/finish is extensive! I have started around six books that I need to work through, a vision board that I had good intentions to do and gathered materials for but never actually started, I started doing the Couch to 5K program and dropped the ball on that… so. many. things!
When I was little I had a treasured blankie, and I remember having this huge blister on the palm of my hand. I asked for a glass of ice water, and I tore my blankie to shreds, dipped the pieces in ice water, and wrapped my blistered hand up. I wanted to keep the blankie shreds but my parents wouldn’t let me. :)
Are you a list person? Half of the time, I only finish things because I LOVE crossing them off my list…and sometimes, I write really easy things on my list, just so I can cross them off. I might be the weirdo!
YES! I live for lists!
I remember being in a Christmas parade with a gold glittery halo on my head ( my mom dressed me as a Christmas angel) holding my Bear…sitting in a stroller…my Mom says I was only about a year old :)
On touching your toes: I have a cool trick for you! before trying to touch your toes, first sit cross-legged on the floor and forward fold, then move slowly all the way to the left, and then to the right. Switch legs and do it again. Then stand up and forward fold, but then cross your arms and move your upper body slowly from left to right. You can also reach your right arm across and out when you are turned left, and then reach your left arm out when you are turned right. this will loosen up those muscles in your back and sides of your backside that get tight. You will be touching your toes in no time :)
Okay, I am going to try that! Thank you!
nate is notorious for starting things and not finishing. i am le task master :) the only thing not finished yet is our photo for our christmas mailer. i have a really cute idea so i hope it works! i love your curlers hah! my earliest memory is prob fun times on my sit and spin or fuzzy mouse (this stuffed mouse that i could not put down. i loved her! prob still in my parents attic too!
ummmm those look awesome and great nutritional stats! I never really liked quinoa, til I put it in the peas peanut soup…win for real. I’m totally making your peppers. have a happy t-gives woman!
I have not been able to touch my toes for years. I love to see that its someone else fault too!
i’m totally having stuffed peppers for dinner tomorrow. thankss for the inspiration!! (; i’ve been learning about my biggest fault lately, too…i’m a freaking busy body!
xo
I haate finishing things I start. I always start with good intentions but then I get distracted along the way!
I hate not finishing things that I start however I am guilty of not finishing photo projects … no 365 challenge … no 30 day challenge help!
:)
You should see my list of things I have started, but have never finished. I have a horrible track record of that!!!!
Have you seen the book “A Year of Mornings”? It is two friends that live far apart and send eachother a picture of their day every day for a year. I bought it for one of my closest friends when we both moved out of state – I always wanted to take a picture each day and mimic that book – BUT, like you, I never finished.
OMG as I was stretching last night my eyes wandered to the reading nook I reogranized my entire room to create. It was supposed to be a place of zen and relaxation. I won’t mention what it looks like now!
However, along with the relaxation was organization…of bills, receipts, etc which I was doing REALLY for about a month….
WHOOPS!
I’m totally guilty of this too. In fact I had some medical school apps that never got finished. Talk about good intentions… ;)
As a side note…this totally inspired a Wednesday Revelations post by me. And some action! THANKS!
I hate leaving things unfinished, so I rarely do. It will eat at me until I get it done! Thus I have a hard time letting things do.
BUT we all have faults, it is true. I have many. But you could do a whole lot worse in my eyes! I’ve found there are two types of people: people who are flawed and they know it, and people who are flawed and haven’t a clue. I’d rather be the first!
I wish I could remember my earliest memory! Wait…that doesn’t make sense…
Do relationships count? Wait, if I ended them, maybe they were finished?
I think I am notorious for starting things in a very motivated fashion. Most notably, I still cannot speak French fluently, although it is my goal every year and I have only completed a yoga challenge once, but I like to make that resolution yearly too!
glad to know i’m not alone…even important things on my to-do list like go to the doctor sometimes take me 9 months to complete. gah! i’m TRYING to get better…sometimes to great success! in the case of the doctor though, i’m still working on scheduling that appointment.
Toe-touching: Try to do it after taking a hot shower (or Bikram class). Used to stretch after showering when I was dancing…really helps!
Ugh…I have to clean out the inside of my car but can’t seem to get motivated.
Oh gosh. I tend to start things and never finish them too. Like that book I started two months ago? Yeah. ;)
I started the 100 push up challenge…and made it to about 50. It hurt my rest, ya know? It’ll happen…some day…
I’m so glad you talked about this! There are several (read: many) projects/ideas/tasks I want to accomplish and I never get around to do anything about it and then I end up feeling bad. Such a bad habit!
