let’s take a dip.

by Janetha on November 16, 2011

in product review,recipes

if there is one thing i cannot stop eating when at a party, it is dip. any kind will do.

vegetable dip.

guacamole.

french onion dip.

queso.

hummus.

buffalo chicken dip.

spinach artichoke cheese dip<—that one is my downfall.

image

i just love dipping and can’t get enough of it. it’s especially bad when there is more than one vehicle to get said dip into my mouth.

carrots.

tortilla chips.

pita bread.

celery.

potato chips.

cucumbers.

crackers.

i end up having to try every possible combination. five dips? five vehicles? that’s 25 possible combos, and you bet i am going to test them all out.

since the holidays are upon us.. okay, they’re freaking here (side note– HOW did that happen, by the way? wasn’t it just labor day?!).. and chances are you have one or seven parties to attend. that’s got some serious dip face time potential right there, folks.

let’s talk about a few of my favorite dips. doing the “research” for this post really made me want to cry.. or just go bury my face in a big bowl of dip.

guacamole. who doesn’t love it?!

image

guacamole is traditionally made by smashing avocado with other ingredients such as tomato, onion, cilantro or salsa… often times finished with a bit of lime juice for a kick. a (laughable) serving of guacamole is two tablespoons. yeah, maybe on one chip… anyway, one “serving” of guacamole is 60 calories, 1g protein, 2g carbs and 5g fat. not bad.  (source.)

BUT..the problem with guacamole (okay, and all the dips i am going to talk about) is that it is rare to consume only two tablespoons of it.  wouldn’t you agree? so yeah, one serving doesn’t sound bad.. but then you end up eating four servings (which is only 1/2 cup of guacamole! have you seen how much guac chipotle piles on their burrito bowls? i looked it up. 4 ounces—or 4 servings.)

vegetable dip. or, as i call it, ranch dip.

image

this popular dip is traditionally made with a packet of ranch seasoning and a cup of sour cream. made this way, a serving—which is again, just two tablespoons (RIGHT)—clocks in at 140 calories, 1g protein, 2g carbs and a whopping 14g fat. (source.) yikes.

spinach artichoke cheese dip. ah, yes.. one of my all time favorites.

image

i always buy the stonemill kitchens spinach artichoke cheese dip at costco. it’s delicious and convenient. it is also 100 calories, 4g protein, 1g carbs and 9g fat per 2 tablespoon serving. (source.)

hummus. this one’s healthy, right?

image

yes, hummus is good for you. i mean, it’s typically just smashed up garbanzo beans, tahini, seasonings and maybe some oil..but it still has calories. i want to shake your hand if you can keep your hummus intake at the low level of 2 tablespoons. if i don’t make my own, i always buy sabra brand hummus. it’s my favorite premade hummus. 2 tablespoons of sabra has 70 calories, 2g protein, 4g carbs and 6g fat. and for those of you who eat almost the whole container in a day (which is easy to do!).. the container has 700 calories total.

oh, and P.S.—don’t forget about all the calories of your vehicles. those can really add up, too.

you all know i am going somewhere with all this dip talk, right? i wouldn’t just tell you the nutrition info of all your favorite dips without a healthier option, would i? no. of course not.

yesterday i received* two of the newest additions to the line of chobani products.

IMG_7205

two GIANT 32 ounce tubs of plain greek yogurt—one0% fat and one 2% fat.

image

chobani just came out with this new, large 32 ounce container of yogurt. it is available in plain (both 0% and 2%), vanilla and strawberry.  i am all for giant tubs of greek yogurt. i go through enough of it that i need to buy this much at a time and i like the fact that there is less packaging (and waste!) to go along with all the yogurt consumption.

the cholks (chobani folks!) wanted me to play around in the kitchen and come up with some recipes using their yogurt, and while i was gazing into my fridge this morning (okay, with a blank stare because i was still really tired) thinking about what to make for lunch, wishing i could eat the whole container of sabra that was staring back at me, a light bulb went *ding* in my brain!

yummus.

IMG_7217

that’s right.. yummus. yogurt+hummus!

i love dipping my veggies in hummus at lunch time, but that wimpy two tablespoon serving (at 70 calories) sure doesn’t go a long way! i am not one to count my calories, but i am mindful of them.. and i don’t want to blow a bunch of them on hummus because it really doesn’t fill me up—it’s a dip, not an entree.

i thought it would be a great idea to stretch my 2 tablespoons of hummus a little further by adding some plain chobani to it. and guess what? it was amazing.

IMG_7246

yummus dip.

makes ten 6 tablespoon servings

  • 20 oz of chobani 0% plain greek yogurt
  • one 10 oz container of hummus (or make your own)
  • dipping vehicles (veggies, pita, chips, etc)
  1. combine yogurt and hummus in a bowl.
  2. dip with vehicles of choice.

IMG_7225

that’s for sure the shortest recipe ever. super simple! i used red pepper hummus, but any flavor would be good. i think the flavored kinds would be better over the plain kinds of hummus because the flavor adds a dimension to the dip.

IMG_7214

each serving is six tablespoons.  that is triple the amount of a typical suggested dip serving and, if you ask me, way more realistic! nutrition stats per serving (sans dipping vehicles):

image

if you aren’t making the dip to feed a crowd, you can make a single serving amount.. simply use a 2:1 chobani:hummus ratio. at lunch today, i used 4 T of chobani and 2 T of hummus.  photographed here is three servings. (6 oz chobani and 3 oz hummus.)

IMG_7230

after snapping the photos, i packaged the yummus into a tupperware and put it in my fridge for quick dipping capabilities. since both ingredients keep well in the fridge for a long time, i know this will be gone long before it even has a chance to go bad.

next time you are invited to a holiday party and need to bring a dish to share, give yummus a try!

Qs~

what’s your favorite dip?

and your favorite dipping vehicle?

I have to admit, the beginning of this post made me quite depressed. I know I eat WAY more than the serving size when it comes to dips and spreads. They are my weakness. (Am I the only one who piles on globs of hummus on my salad and then licks the spoon?) Haha, but then I got so happy to see a wonderful recipe to help me with my hummus addition. 2 of my favorite condiments in one. What could be better?!

Cate November 16, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I am sooo powerless when it comes to dips. I love hot artichoke dip even thought it’s totally horrible for you… with some tortilla chips!

Asian Bitch November 16, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I do this to! But mostly because I find hummus to be too thick to dip the veggies in.

One of my favorite dip is: Greek yogurt (~1/4 cup) + Dijon mustard (~2 tbsp) + Sweetener + Salt + Pepper

Favorite crudites: Celery, carrots, cucumbers

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List November 16, 2011 at 6:40 pm

Yummus? I like it. You could also make yuacamole or yinach yartichoke yip.
(Chobani’s the best! I’m actually having ANOTHER Chobani giveaway tomorrow!!)

marisa November 16, 2011 at 6:41 pm

Yum! I have now decided I need a trifle dish and I think you should have featured Grandma’s homemade vegetable dip… future post!

Bonnie November 16, 2011 at 6:44 pm

YUMMUS! I love the name and combo – well done! Great stats too – those dips can sure add up, fast – it’s a good reminder. :)

I love the dips too…little breads and dip and veggies (makes me feel better if choose them at a party!) and dip. I don’t think I really have a favorite or standout, although Ashley (from the neverhomemaker) made a chocolate almond butter hummus that I made, thought I didn’t like it at first, and then it grew on me – loved it! Might be my new fav. :)

Chobani just came to Toronto…here’s hoping they make it west to stores in Calgary!

Kerryne November 16, 2011 at 6:44 pm

BRILLIANT! I love this… gads dips really do add up. Man alive, they are my fav too! Ugh. Now all I will be thinking about on Thanksgiving is two tablespoons, two tablespoons. ha ha ha!

Stephanie @cookinfanatic November 16, 2011 at 6:48 pm

what a great idea to mix the Cho with hummus, such a fun dip ! i made a curried carrot & raisin salad with my delivery. loving the 32 oz. containers too!

Lee November 16, 2011 at 6:49 pm

This is a great idea. I can go through those Sabra containers in two sittings. It definitely does not have 10 servings (or whatever it’s supposed to have) for me!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga November 16, 2011 at 6:52 pm

girl i loooooove dip!

i have posted about it so many times…that i like a little food with my dip :)

my fave dip is probably frosting or caramel sauce :)

but seriously…love spinach & artichoke dip and any dip from TJ’s and the cranberry mango chutney I just made is a current fave.

i love dip!

Lauren @ What Lauren Likes November 16, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Love dips!!! Salsa, hummus, guac – vehicle= pitas or raw veggies :D

glidingcalm November 16, 2011 at 7:06 pm

this sounds bomb. ferreals! plus so many ways you could change it up – add other beans, add BBQ, add some spicy sriracha, add pumpkin, add pb, etc. and yes, i am the same way with dips at parties…. a big pet peeve of mine is when people put the dips AWAY before dinner. im like wth. i want my chicken and salad with that salsa, guac, hummus, spinach artichoke dip, etc.!! LEAVE THE DIPS OUT, PLEAZ.

and yes what the eff. halloween was yesterday, labor day was 3 days ago. sheesh! it’s making me scared for my bank account! (present buying is stresssssssssssful!)

Missy November 16, 2011 at 7:07 pm

I have made”hummus” with the 0% Chobani as an ingredient IN the hummus – it was pretty good too (I also used roasted red peppers and spices).
I like to also mix the plain chobani with salsa to make a creamy salsa-like dip cause sometimes plain salsa gives me heartburn and the yogurt seems to help. In the same way, I mix dip mixes (ranch, italian, etc.) with the plain Chobani. All are excellent!
I love using raw sweet red peepers (any color really) and mushrooms to dip.

Mary Legare Whaley November 16, 2011 at 7:19 pm

Hummus is by far my favorite dip. Trader Joe’s has a great variety of fun flavors. My faves are their horseradish and kalamata olive hummus. 50 calories per 2 tbsp serving. A lot of times, I’ll eat hummus + an obscenely large plate of vegetables for lunch. Usually like 4 heaping tablespoons of hummus along with sliced button mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots make for a filling and healthy lunch. I try not to snack on hummus, even if it’s with vegetables. If I make a meal out of it, I won’t do too much damage. I never eat it out of the container. That is a recipe for disaster…or pure bliss, depends on how you look at it.

Janetha November 17, 2011 at 1:07 pm

I loooove TJ’s hummus! Another reason I wish I had one :(

Mary Legare Whaley November 17, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Grrrrrr that’s a bummer. We just got ours this summer after Charleston united, and petitioned, and started a Facebook page…

emily (a nutritionist eats) November 16, 2011 at 7:24 pm

I am so trying this! I’m a total dip girl too, and yes, always eat more than 2 Tbsp.
I just made some spinach-artichoke dip for the Packer game on Monday – it is my absolute favorite!!

Jess@atasteofconfidence November 16, 2011 at 7:31 pm

Ah buf chicken dip is my favorite. But definitely hurts my stomach when I eat too much!

sarah (sarah learns) November 16, 2011 at 7:33 pm

ohhhh, dip gets me every time too! i can’t choose a favorite – i do love me some guac and my mom makes shrimp dip that is delicious!

J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) November 16, 2011 at 7:35 pm

I love, love, love so many dips! My favorite is probably French onion, but I hardly ever have that. So guac or hummus are up there, and of course salsa! Love cheesy dips, like spinach + artichoke too. And chocolate dip. Aaah, I love ’em all, haha.

Yummus sounds great! 6 TBSP is so much more realistic than 2 licks… I mean, TBSP of regular hummus. ;) Yogurt is a great tool to stretch traditional dippy foods; I like it with guac, too!

Ellen Clifford November 16, 2011 at 7:44 pm

If its good hummus, then I can’t get enough. Spicy salsa too. I eat both those things with a spoon-in the privacy if my home anyway…

Emily November 16, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Dips are always my demise at parties! I’m definitely a “volume eater” so I love the idea of yummus!

Kris November 16, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Mmm dip. I love dip. If there is one thing that probably has the most recipes on my site, it’s most likely dips/spreads. Mmm.

my current favorite (I’ve made three batches!) is … DILL PICKLE DIP!! oh my stars it’s good! :D

favorite vehicle? broccoli! cauliflower!

Jaapna November 16, 2011 at 7:52 pm

The Chobani 32 oz. tubs have been around for a while :) at least in the northeast!

Annie November 16, 2011 at 8:03 pm

i have the same weakness for dips! Salsa is probably my favorite dip (which is good, because the stats aren’t too bad), but I can put a ton away!

BroccoliHut November 16, 2011 at 8:16 pm

SO psyched for the new HUGE size tubs!
I just made Spinach Artichoke Dip yesterday (with CHO, incidentally), and I think it might be my new favorite dip.
Best vehicle? Everything Pretzel Crisps or good ol carrots.

Betty November 16, 2011 at 8:17 pm

I use to LOVE helluva French onion with ruffles.. But my new fav addiction is sabra roasted garlic and cucumbers or celery.. As many times as I’ve tried to like peppers raw, I can’t do it.

I can’t wait to try this out!

Katie November 16, 2011 at 8:45 pm

Yes! I need those big freakin’ containers in my hands NOW. I want to make yummus. And I want to dip pita chip after pita chip in it.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) November 16, 2011 at 9:33 pm

TAHINI!!!! And Pita!!!!!. I’ve actually been having side salads with a mix of tahini and white balsamic as my dressing MMMMmmmmm!

You are right, no one ever eats just one serving- that’s crazy talk.

Ty November 16, 2011 at 9:55 pm

I’m the freak that uses only 1 tablespoon of dip with like 20 chips/carrots/etc.

I also only like about a tbsp of dressing on my salad.

I’m weird!

Amanda November 16, 2011 at 10:10 pm

huge chobani! I think I’ve spied those at our Target. I love the idea of less packaging and more yogurt. YUM!

Sasha November 16, 2011 at 11:30 pm

I love dips. No way I could pick a favorite though, love them all. I make homemade tzatziki with greek yogurt and dill, so that is high up on my list, but I cant wait to try your recipe!

Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli November 17, 2011 at 2:25 am

I’m still giggling over “cholks”! Haha! And now, probably because it’s 3AM and I’ve hit the possible delusion stage of my night shift, but I can’t help but think who in the heck came up with the whole lightbulb going “ding”?? Last time I checked, when I flipped on a switch in my house, there was no “ding”…unless my outlets are missing some sort of magic that everyone else seems to have. ;)

Oh man, I am a dip fiend! Favorite combos: chunky salsa with tortilla chips, tzatziki and pita, and pumpkin dip with gingersnaps! Mmm, now I’m hungry!

Janetha November 17, 2011 at 1:08 pm

I can’t take credit, Emily at Chobani came up with that term!

Dude, so random, when I typed that light bulb ding thing.. I THOUGHT THE SAME THING.

cathy@1970kikiproject November 17, 2011 at 4:08 am

time IS flying! but how come new year’s to easter never goes this fast?! would you believe i had never had guac until this year – love it! but i just can’t get into hummus – i keep trying and it’s not grabbing me (maybe i need to try a different brand…do not say to make my own as we know that’ just ain’t gonna happen!).

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning November 17, 2011 at 5:27 am

You are GENIUS with that yummus! Why, why, why have I never thought to combine the two??
I use Greek yogurt as a sub for sour cream for everything.
Oh- and my fave dip is most definitely guacamole. That IS a meal to me.

Erica November 17, 2011 at 5:42 am

Brilliant! I got the chobs package too-cant wait to use it! Fav dip? Probably fresh salsa or guac!

Hope @ With A Side Of Hope November 17, 2011 at 5:58 am

My favorite dip by far is guacamole with spinach dip coming in as a close second! I love using veggies or pitas as dippers.

That yummus looks fantastic! I think it’s awesome that Chobani came out with those large containers. It definitely saves you money if you buy greek yogurt a lot :)

Kacy November 17, 2011 at 7:24 am

That sounds great!
I love all dips! Blue corn tortilla chips with artichoke dip. Yum. Triscuits with extra cheesy spinach artichoke dip. Double yum. Veggies and homemade rand dip. Triple yum. I want it all!

Annette@EnjoyYourHealthyLife November 17, 2011 at 7:30 am

artichoke spinach cheese dip–SO delicious!!

This sounds like a fun way to make a dip even tastier–thanks girl!

Krissie J November 17, 2011 at 8:06 am

Crab dip is my absolute favorite. If there is good crab dip around I cannot refuse! My favorite vehicle is definitely veggies, but toasted bread works nicely, too. ;)

Christie November 17, 2011 at 8:20 am

I LOVE this post, Janetha. Yummus!!! I can’t wait to try this. In fact, I think I have the 2 in my fridge right now… gotta go!

Lindsay November 17, 2011 at 9:13 am

I love Ranch and Onion Dip! The store-bought and sour cream-based varieties are pretty unhealthy. I have used greek yogurt with both the Hidden Valley Ranch mix and the Lipton Onion mix with excellent, guilt-free results!

The Onion is always a big hit when I make it with yogurt (no one can tell the difference) and the ranch is good, but has a little bit more tang, so if someone doesn’t care for greek yogurt, they might be able to tell the difference.

Janetha November 17, 2011 at 1:07 pm

So funny you say that. I always make my Ranch dip with Greek yogurt and my friends ALWAYS call me out on it. Most of them don’t like it this way.

Errign November 17, 2011 at 9:24 am

I’ve been buying the 32 ounce tubs of Chobani for a long time – I love them. I usually get the 2% because I like it better than the 0%. I don’t like flavored yogurts enough to eat 32 oz of them…

Sara @my less serious life November 17, 2011 at 9:32 am

this is brilliant! i agree that hummus never goes far enough. i’m trying this next time in in dipping mode for sure!

SkinnyRunner November 17, 2011 at 9:43 am

yummus, thats pretty creative. i always try to make my own lower calorie hummus at home but it always tastes like butt so i need to try yummus instead. cant screw up a recipe like that!

Christin@purplebirdblog November 17, 2011 at 9:44 am

You are brilliant!! Love this idea… cuz I can seriously shovel down some dips as well! :)

Kristie November 17, 2011 at 9:59 am

Yeah right I LOVE hummus (and drown myself in it). I can’t believe I never ever thought to mix it with plain yogurt. I thought I had mixed EVERYTHING with yogurt. I need to do this like yesterday. SO genius!

Lauren @ Recipes for a Quarterlife November 17, 2011 at 10:38 am

greek yogurt makes everything better! i make a “healthy” cheesy bean dip with refried beans, greek yogurt, low fat shredded mexican blend cheese, and salsa. Mix and nuke for a few minutes, dip in bell peppers, corn tortillas, etc. It tastes like it is SO bad for you, but it’s not!

Cassy November 17, 2011 at 11:01 am

genius!

Heather (Heather's Dish) November 17, 2011 at 11:09 am

I love the word yummus! And I am totally stealing this for friendsgiving next week. An maybe just to eat by myself this weekend :)

Lisa November 17, 2011 at 11:42 am

My favorite dip is to take non-fat greek yogurt and mix in any kind of seasonings I feel like, usually dill, onion powder, garlic powder and cayenne pepper. You can put any combo you want and its practically guilt free!!

Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile November 17, 2011 at 12:42 pm

Not gonna lie, but I eat WAY more than the serving size for hummus. Forget it! Two tablespoons is a joke ;) haha It is too delicious. This is such an awesome idea though, I love chobani. Add hummus? To die!
