hola! glad you guys liked the rundown of all the tasty food i ate while in LA. this post is dedicated to the moves—there was quite a lot of moving involved, actually. it’s fun when you are visiting like-minded people who want to hit the weight room and hiking trail with you.
friday.
deb & i went to her favorite gold’s gym on friday morning.. venice gold’s: the mecca of bodybuilding!
we completed jamie eason’s bicep & tricep workout from the 12 week training plan i am following. it was a lot of fun working out with deb and trying out a new-to-me gym! there was an awesome outdoor area that we spent a lot of time in—it kind of reminded me of a prison yard. not that i would know.. i have only been to jail, not prison.
we ended up getting super huge!
i also participated in a first time experience.. showering at the gym! i know, it took me 28 years to actually shower at the gym. i live really close to my gym, so it’s never been an issue. turns out there is a serious method to the madness and deb showed me the ropes. we were ready in no time!

smoothies in hand, we left the gym and headed straight to venice beach (more on that later) and didn’t have to worry about heading home to get ready. it was quite convenient!
saturday.
deb & i hit up an outdoor workout on saturday. we headed to an area that overlooked the ocean. it had a loooong flight of 125 stairs plus a shady area to do some lower body moves.
we brought some necessary equipment. you know.. a kettlebell, an exercise band, a jumprope…
…and a 40 pound bag of kitty litter.
we got crafty and did things like kickback walking lunges, stiff legged deadlifts, over-the-bosu squats and lunges, sumo squats and single leg squats.
we finished off the workout with a little cardio action on the massive staircase.
it was such a fun workout! deb will be posting the details of the moves sometime in the next decade.
after our blogger picnic, eden, deb & i headed to hike runyon canyon.
the best part about the hike is that it doubles as an offleash dog park. lucky me!
the worst part about the hike is that there were no portapotties, so we peed behind a tree. hey, when you gotta go.. you gotta go.
it was a steep (but fun) climb to the top.
the views at the top of the hike were amazing.
i am really glad eden planned for us to do this hike.. it was one of the main highlights of the trip!
sunday.
deb & i got a late start on sunday. we headed to malibu for a hike that deb does quite often. we practically had the trail to ourselves and it was a beautiful day to enjoy the outdoors. it was just under 3 miles (we think!)
stunning shot of the sun coming through the clouds shining onto the ocean!
there were lots of lizards on the way. i named this one xavier.
another shot of the great outdoors.
good hike, even better company!
as you can see, we managed to cram a lot of moves in over the short three day period i was in LA. it is always fun to stay active while on vacation!
*****************************************
speaking of moves & staying active.. it’s tuesday trainer time over on lindsay’s list! it’s actually rest week for tuesday trainer, but you can catch a video of me answering four fitness-related questions along with a handful of other awesome bloggers answering the same questions in videos of their own. click the logo!
in other news… the last time i ate a meal was monday night around 9 PM. marshall made me a grilled cheese and tomato soup and had it waiting for me after i woke up from a 3 hour nap. he’s perfect. i don’t get to eat again until thursday afternoon. YEAH. i have a colonoscopy scheduled for thursday morning and i have to do a two day prep that involves no food… but lots of water, coffee, jello, broth and other clear liquids. ugh. so far i’ve only had water and coffee. i am not too cranky YET but i am only about 20 hours in. i feel bad for anyone who has to talk to me tomorrow.
in more other news, please answer these polls.. we have some ideas in the works about a blogger retreat in denver in the late spring and i need input. “retreat” means hanging out, cooking together, eating, hiking, group fitness and relaxing. nothing is set in stone, but wouldn’t it be rad? also.. bloggers and readers can both vote.
thanks in advance! oh and speaking of polls.. the better breakfast poll is still open. i am busy and will announce the winner tomorrow. go vote if you haven’t!
Qs~
1. do you workout while on vacation? what types of workouts are your favorite while vacationing?
2. just in general: do you prefer to work out at the gym, outdoors or in your home?

I haven’t mastered the art of working out on vacation. I’m a creature of habit and as soon as my schedule gets messed up I can’t function. I prefer cardio outside and weights/misc in a gym.
Sadly, the first thing I do after I’ve booked my accommodation is find out where the nearest gym is. Usually on vacation I am a little more relaxed about my diet, but that makes working out every day even more important! I’d go crazy if I didn’t :)
I can’t believe you’ve never showered at a gym! Lol it may be a good thing though… my gym ran out of hot water this morning!!
I’d love to hear your “showering at the gym” routine and any tips you picked up.
Oh, don’t you worry.. Deb has a whole post planned about showering at the gym! I didn’t know there was SO MUCH involved in it.. but I will be sure to let you know when she has the post up.
Deb, see this? Motivation to hop to it ;)
I’ll get on that before I qualify for Medicare.
Loving the Vibrams on your feet :)
Ooh a blogger meet up in Denver?! That would be fab : )
On vacations I usually do odd things like lunges down the hallway of my hotel, random running around in fields, or light jogs. Whatever it takes to stay active.
Ha , I love that you guys were hauling around cat litter. Classic.
Have a great night!
I would LOVE to workout with Deb! Gosh she seems like a great person to kick your butt!
Love ya girl!!
The retreat sounds awesome, I am IN!
Thank you Katie! I think that the butt kicking was pretty mutual! :-)
All of those “moves” look so fun. I love the outdoorsy hikes/workouts. Those views and the great company made the time fly by I’m sure! And yes I exercise on vacation – love it because it is a scenic area, usually the white sand beaches or the beautiful mountains!
I could never do the Denver meetup – but maybe one day ya’ll can do the Big Easy ;)
I was thinking about you and the upcoming scope – I am so not feeling good just thinking about that experience! Drink lots of water for sure. I just hope they can tell you what is going on with you. Just let us know what they say once you are conscious on Thursday – AFTER your gigantic meal of course ;) I am prescribing lots of ice cream!
Good luck on your procedure. Girl…my heart is with you. I am so sorry you’re going thru this. I hope that your weekend in LA and time with Deb and the other ladies took your mind off your health issues. ((HUGS))
I wasn’t really jealous of all the food…but seeing all these awesome workouts makes me really envious!
Am I invited to the Retreat??
I posted about how awkward my home workouts are, so all I will say is I prefer the gym for weight-related workouts and outdoors for running. My last vacation was a snowboarding trip to Echo, Keystone, Vail, & Breckenridge, so I’d say we worked out every day! ;)
I love your vacation workouts! I especially like the kitty litter weight, that’s just perfect. I used to shower at the gym every day in high school…I was so weirded out at first, but eventually succumbed to the convenience.
And good luck with your colonoscopy…I’m assuming it’s for your stomach issues? I hope they find something easily fixable!
So much to say!!!!
1. the views. color me jealous! I wanna workout on a beach…
2. Venice Gold’s!! How awesome!
3. That’s totally the cat litter Clarabelle shits in.
4. Is Deb going a single leg KB dead lift? Those are the death of my booty.
Clarabelle!?! FABULOUS name for a kitty!
Oops- no, I was doing single leg squats- was my form that bad!!? I love single leg Deads though- great for balance and strength!!
K, since I am a nerd and love reading all of your posts, I’m going to comment “yay/nay”
yay – a blogger retreat!! How fun!!
nay – not eating til thursday!! Glad I don’t have to work with you tomorrow ;) Hope you get some results with all of your tests!
all of your “old” posts…. I love reading your new ones too duh haha
I’m a pretty devoted exerciser, even on vacation. The one time I took it easy though was when we went to Disney World–we literally walked for hours each, so I figured it was OK to skip the gym :)
I’ve got you beat girl… 32 and NEVER showered at a gym. Something about it freaks me out ;) Good for you though, was it as awful as it sounds???? ha ha ha!
Those workouts sound so AWESOME! I love working out outdoors, as long as the weather is just right!
Haha I totally laughed at some of these photos I forgot we took. LMAO on me writing the workout post in the next decade! haha. And the photo of Runyon cyn looked like Funyon cyn and I got hungry for junk food.
It was so great that you were on the same wavelength with working out. Usually when people come to visit, I’m like “Bye! Off to the gym- help yourself to food!” and I’m sure they think I’m a nut job. Love that you are an improviser too- go with the flow- it’s so important not to be stuck in one type of exercise: “Oh no! The meat-head is hogging the tricep extension rope! Whatever will I DOOOOO?” That was so much fun in the prison yard. And fun trying to figure out the gender of our fellow trainees. ;-) Miss you!!!!!!!!
PS Ya think my ‘fanny pack’ aka ‘bum bag’ is big enough???
Good god, I can’t even follow directions:
1. Yes, I always work out on vacations- that’s part of the fun: trying to figure out how/where and with which weird tools that double as weights :-)
2. Love all workouts- I get bored if it’s all inside or all outside- I do a mixture all the time. And the content changes too- sometimes it’s dance, sometimes boot camp, etc.
3. That reminds me of our Boulder mini-meetup that we had to cancel when my Dad got sick (and passed away). If we aren’t gonna be out of town, I’m gonna block off those two sets of dates in the calendar. <3 How much fun!
Deb – you HAVE to come!! And bring Eden! PLEASE! Need to hug both of you for an awkwardly long time.
love all the action shots!!
blogger event needs to be in May, just saying because I have to attend some twins wedding on April 28 th ;) haha
xoxo
michelle
Oh wow on the moves! I’m not an exerciser on vacation, hopefully one day.
What an active trip! Love all yours and Deb’s creative workouts. I love being active on vacation. Lots of hikes/walks are my favorite.
In general I prefer outdoor workouts, but I don’t get to do them that much anymore. The toddler has gotten a bit too old for the stroller, so we can’t do long hikes/walks with him anymore. And a “serious” hike just takes me away from him a bit too long… I did manage to make him go on a 3 mile hike with me the other day, but you really couldn’t call it a workout for me as it was very, very slow with lots of stops and times to explore (which was fun). It did tire him out however… :)
Good luck with your procedure. Andy had a colonoscopy a few years back, and I know that going through the prep isn’t a lot of fun. Hope you’ll get some answers as to what’s going on soon! I’ll be thinking of you!
Hurray for a Denver retreat! I live there and would be happy to provide any planning support. :)
So fun! I love staying active when i travel-especially when i can fit in outdoor workouts! The picture of you two as body builders is awesome
You and Deb look awesome doing these moves with the kitty litter. 40 lbs is nothing to sneeze at! Also I want a bosu. I love them! Deadlifts on a bosu, good times!
I still need to hike Runyon one day!
So glad I got to see you!
Oh dear lord. I feel like an idiot for dragging you on that hike! I bet you were tired. And I’m surprised you didn’t put up that picture of that weird woman…or are you saving that for “wild n crazy sightings” post? hee hee.
I knew about this Denver meet up but I don’t think I can go :(
I can’t even affort go to foodbuzz this year. Bleh, I’m so sad to miss out. But you’ll have a blast with Lindsay. Talk a lot of shit about me!
You’re going!! We’ll find you a sponsor or SOMETHING!!!
oh how I wish I could of been with you!
I make it mandatory to do a workout while on vacation! I love exploring where I am by going for a fun run or checking out the local gym! Its always fun to meet other people and trainers.
The first time I showered at the gym was the middle of winter when my hot water heater broke and it took the management company 2 WEEKS to get it fixed… so I either had to go to the gym to shower or take an ice cold one. :(
I try to get in a workout here and there and especially like to take hikes on vacation. When I visit my mom, we do pilates DVD’s together– it’s a lot of fun!
next time you hike griffith park go to the observatory – there are bathrooms!!!
good stuff in getting in a new experience on the trip…and a funny one at that – thumbs up!
love the photo of the three of you at the top of the canyon. and the hikes sound marvelous. look at that sunshine!
i love working out on vacation – that is part of what makes the holiday – trying new-to-me gyms or running/walking around outside.
thinking of you and wishing you the best as you await thursday, j!
That looks like such a great experience working out in the outdoors. I don’t think I would be able to shower at the gym. You are brave! :)
I will use ANY excuse to go out to Colorado- it’s my favorite state!
Look at you buff chicks (and I’m not taking about the fake muscle pic). It is definitely having awesome friends to do fitness activities with- and your hikes look incredible! And I would LOVE to do some people watching at the Golds and Venice beach!
i love the things you did in that outdoor workout…i love hiking and doing cardio outdoors but tend to get distracted doing strength anywhere but inside!
You look awesome Janetha – Jamie Eason’s program must be going great for you! I just started Phase 2 and am ready to get back into cardio and start losing some lbs – Phase 1 I maintained and definately put on a lot of muscle. Let us know how its going! Sounds like you had an awesome vacay!
1. Going to Denver would be a great way to use up my American flight credits when the cancer has sufficiently sucked it.
2. OF COURSE working out with Deb involves bags of kitty litter.
3. When I worked in a gym I showered there every single day. I didn’t buy shampoo the whole time I lived in Toronto.
4. I love running on vacation because it’s a great way to take in the scenery. But hiking and going to a local yoga studio are fun too!
5. I’m a gym rat. Always and forever.
Love ya JG!
YES!!! I get to meet Susan!
I love that you all were so active! Looks like such a fun time and awesome hikes. If it was nice like that here in Washington I’d be all over spending my days outside… A girl can dream.
Hope you feel okay with no food! No one would want to be around me for that…
Looks like a great trip! And awesome views!
Look at you getting all creative outdoors. Also, your arms look jacked in the best possible way. I officially have a girl crush on your biceps.
Thank you! This was nice to read, after getting a comment on my last post about how I look like a fat ass ;)
Someone did NOT say that. Ick. I shall keep my comments to myself. Also, I would love to do the blogger thing, but my wedding is in June and I definitely can’t afford to me flying to Denver. I hope it’s a success, though, and I can go to the next one! Would love to see your fat ass in person
Looks like a fun trip! I always say I’m going to workout on vacation, when we were in Cancun I talked about doing yoga every morning we were there on the beach. They had a free class. Instead we just ate food and did what honeymooners do ;) ;) So it was nice not to work out, but is always nice to workout too. Sometimes you just want to be lazy.
I would rather ALWAYS work out outdoors. But I feel like sometimes I lack the inspiration to push myself. Mainly because it never FEELS like I’m working out when I’m outside. For example, if I go on a hike I don’t feel like I actually worked out.. or snowboarding..As when I go to the gym I feel like I did. It’s a weird state of mind, so usually I end up going to the gym anyway if I did something outside.
I love Xavier. And you. glad you had fun, Vanilla bean <3
dangit i muss you!
OH… your arms look SUPER toned.
:! bewjkeww
FUN times! I love California but i haven’t been to LA since oh..January or so. I’ve always wanted to go on that Runyon Canyon Hike, thanks for reminding me about it.
I can’t say I exercise while on vacation but I end up walking everywhere! So that counts for some cardio, it’s the best way to discover a city.
I prefer to workout outdoors, it’s so much less distracting. The gym is a nice escape but home is cheaper..I just never manage to get much done with weights.
Your blogger meetup hangout out eating good food time sounds f-u-n!
I love this!
Working out on vacation is a must for me, if the vacation is going to be longer than 2 days. It keeps me sane. ;) I prefer outdoor workouts, and love mixing it up and getting creative much like what you did. Looks like a fabulous (FUN!) way to work out. :D
Had to chime in on the “C” word. The cleanse stuff did NOT work on me. Talk about being constipated…anyway, the procedure itself isn’t that bad but you’ll have some serious gas afterwards ;) It’s kind of funny.
I hope your diagnosis is more than IBS. Talk about a NON diagnosis. I have found (and i’ve tried it all) as long as I don’t eat broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage i’m good to go! Hope all is well!
dude.. the cleanse stuff isn’t working for me, either! hmmm. also, i had some major gas after my CT scan. it was hilarious actually! thanks for popping in.. i miss you!
YES, I workout while on vacation – I look forward to that the most! Getting out and going for a run is my favorite way to see the area we’re visiting. I also love dropping into local yoga studios that I scope out beforehand, or Crossfit boxes. A must!
I like getting out of the house to workout! I like working out with others, doesn’t matter outside or inside. But, I LIKE TO RUN ALONE. People think I am nuts, but running is ME time, baby!
I totally was loving your mountain workout, cowgirl. ;)
Hope all is well on the tummy front. I’ll eat a big bean burrito for you tonight while you’re slurping Jello. I know, I am just THAT kind.
I have to workout while on vacation so I make up for all the yummy food. ha! I think it’s so much more fun to be active and workout. Those bands are a must in my suitcase (even though I don’t travel much). Love the cat litter idea! ha ha!
Hey friend! Great recap post…so many sights, sounds, meals, and moves b/w this one and the last post! Love it. I am one of those who also like to move on vacation and just try to be more mindful of how I’m eating as I go. My goal is always to try to squeeze in shorter, higher intensity BodyRock-type workouts to get the best bang for my buck when time is short and we’re busy or visiting others. And in general, I love working out at home. Besides working as a trainer at a gym, I never belonged to one (just b/c there was one at our school and now b/c I have enough equipment to save the gym fee) so I’m used to workouts in the basement. I prefer inside if I’m solo (less distractions!) and outside if I’m with others (way more fun!).
Loved your kitty litter photos – the best workout prop I’ve seen! Also, you and Deb seem like great friends; she seems awesome! Love the spunk she seems to have and how fun to share a weekend with YOU! :D
Love your outdoor workout! That looked awesome!
I’m actually a big fan of exercising on vacation – I love trying out new gyms or taking a class or just getting to know a new city on a run or walk! :)
Dude…I can only imagine the madness that was your workout with Deb! The two of you together must have been insanity! I’m not sure if I would LOVE to be there or if I would be too scared crapless to be there ;)
Come visit me in Seattle! :)
I don’t know much about Jamie Eason’s program but I hope it isn’t like a lot of the womens bodybuilding routines. They end up making you look like a smaller version of a man. I like a woman who is fit and feminine but with just a hint of definition. If she has a better looking sick pack than me…I run away. Now of course this is my personal preference but I just wanted to hear what women have to say on this issue.
Haha, what, you wouldn’t want to grate cheese off a girl’s belly!? hee.
Have you seen Jamie Eason? If any dude didn’t want their babe to look like her, I would question their taste. She’s smokin.
yessssssssss fooorrrrrrrrrrrrrr mayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!
I hope everything went ok with the colonoscopy! Those things suck. I once went without food for 10 hours and I was called names for my attitude. Bad names. Looks like you had a blast in LA though! Great job! I’m trying to plan a girl’s weekend away but I don’t want it to be an alcohol sesh, I want healthy and fun stuff! let’s see what happens.
