owl love you forever.

in random rambles

today was a bad day!

right from the get go, i got stuck at a train crossing which made me late for work, then it was a domino of unfortunate events.

physically, mentally, emotionally. bad, bad, bad.

i don’t want to ramble and whine about it… but it was a REALLY. BAD. DAY.

to top it off, marshall is working out of town and won’t be home until midnight. sigh.

you know what that means, don’t you?

bad day + no husband to feed = cereal for dinner!

hey, gotta look on the bright side, right?

lucky for me, i drafted this post at the beginning of august and have been saving it for a rainy day. or a bad one. hey, if the shoe fits…

************************************************************

lots of you know i have a few thing i am obsessed with really into:

  • houndstooth
  • acronyms
  • OWLS

granted, owls have become really trendy lately, and so liking them is kind of the “thing to do”. when that happens, i usually shy away from liking something. for example, when i was in junior high and high school i was absolutely obsessed with volcom (it is a snowboarding/skateboarding brand of clothing).  in fact, i would not leave the house without wearing at least one, if not 4 or 5, items of volcom—not to mention my wallet, purse and keychain. all volcom. i constantly doodled the volcom logo and my sister made volcom things for me every christmas—everything from quilts to flower pots.  my obsession was borderline crazy.  then, all of a sudden, volcom got ridiculously trendy. i blame zumiez and pacsun, for the most part. i still like volcom (and i still have 23 volcom purses in storage, eight with matching wallets), but my obsession has passed by the wayside and moved onto other things—like owls. even though owls are becoming trendy, they are one thing i just can’t quit.

it’s funny, because all my friends (both real life and in blogland) will send me photos of anything owl or houndstooth. it’s pretty fun, actually, and i welcome the photos. a few people have even mailed me owl things! because of my known love for owls, i have two owl lunch boxes, owl dishes, owl jewelry, an owl apron, custom made owl coasters with matching trivet.. you get the idea.  i think marshall hates the fact that all this stuff keeps showing up at our house, but i am thrilled.

i follow a blog called “my owl barn” (which is where i discovered the website where i got my iphone cover).  each day, tons of awesome owl items are posted. each day, i add to my list of lust for owly items.

here are some spectacular items that i have starred. once i make my first million, i will buy all of these things. (click on the link title to view the item and photo source.)

you may notice i gravitate toward the more realistic looking owls compared to the cartoony ones—but i really love them all. no owl discrimination here!

be back tomorrow with a happier tune ;)

Qs~

1. i have owls. what is your “thing”?

2. when something begins to get trendy, do you tend to like it more or less?

Chloe (In Fine Feather) September 7, 2011 at 9:24 pm

My boyfriend just bought me the cutest owl mug for my birthday and I love it. Something about owls just makes them look so cute :)

Amanda September 7, 2011 at 9:25 pm

OWL LOVE <3

I am kind of into cartoony owls more. Also whales. i freaking love whales. i rarely find cute whale things though.

I had an argument with a friend in high school over who liked Roxy first before it got trendy. So lame!

dahlewhale September 8, 2011 at 3:02 pm

dahlewhale.com has tons of cute whale things!

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List September 7, 2011 at 9:36 pm

You know first hand that owl’s are Clara’s thing. Chunky thighs + owls = wall art for your house. ;)
I’m not sure if I have a “thing”. I have a “color” – kelly green. Alot of my clothes and coats are green.

Evan Thomas September 7, 2011 at 9:38 pm

I had a bad day, too. I hope our tomorrows are better.

Blog is the New Black September 7, 2011 at 9:49 pm

1. Owls ALWAYS make me think of you… I’m not even joking.
2. Those sandals are AWESOME. Buy them. It will help your bad day! ;) xo

Ty September 7, 2011 at 9:51 pm

I love owls and giraffes.

I’ve got owl jewelry, owl shirts, owl totes, owl decorations (multiple) in my living room, owly owly owl owl! :)

I try not to care about trends. That means if I don’t like something, I don’t pretend to like it just because everyone else does. For instance, crocs. Or those hideous clog shoes. Or Chobani yogurt. However, if I like something, I also don’t care if 50 bajillion other people also like it. I feel like that’s a “hipster” attitude.

I’m not over here trying all hard to be “unique”.

I just like what I like. :)

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:49 pm

haha loved your comment. i totally know what you mean.

Stephanie September 7, 2011 at 9:52 pm

I agree with the poster above me. Every time I see something with an owl on it I think of you, too.

My “thing” is anything with a fleur de lis pattern, especially in black and white on a really bold background like hot pink or bright green.

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:50 pm

ohhh my wedding photographer has some photos with a background you’d die for!

Kristina @ spabettie September 7, 2011 at 9:55 pm

I hope tomorrow is better!!

you and I share a love of houndstooth – I am a FREAK about it. my other things – crowns and tiaras (big collection…), Matryoshka dolls (the Russian nesting…).

I LOVE those owl sandals – too cute!

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Those nesting dolls are so rad! what a winner of a thing

Kristina @ spabettie September 8, 2011 at 6:21 pm

and you know what I have?? some of those nesting dolls that are painted with HOUNDSTOOTH! :)

Janetha September 9, 2011 at 12:32 pm

AMAZING. photos.

BroccoliHut September 7, 2011 at 9:58 pm

Polka dots are definitely my thing. Seth’s mom gives me something polka-dotted for pretty much every gift-giving occasion. I don’t mind :)

Gina @ Running to the Kitchen September 7, 2011 at 9:58 pm

Hope tomorrow is better for you :(
I honestly, can’t think of anything I’d describe as “my thing.” That’s kinda sad isn’t it? ha!

betty September 7, 2011 at 9:58 pm

1. i like that you like the more realistic owls because i think the less ones are more popular.. even though i want my unborn babies room to be owl themed..

2. my thing is turquoise.. i love anything with that stone or ‘look’ idk why.. just always have. me and my sister have the only ring my grandmother left behind and its a turquoise stone and so old fashioned, i love it but my sister has the smaller fingers.. boo :(

3. i know exactly what you mean about hating something cause others start to like it. im like that with my music. i listen to just about everything, but im really protective over some of my fav bands like brand new, starting line, bright eyes, ect. i remember loooving yellowcard in high school going to warped tour.. and then all of a sudden ocean ave became a huge hit.. needless to say i have not listened to that song since.. i still love the band..

other things: twilight, trueblood, and although i use to watch jersey shore.. i will no longer watch it once it became “jersday” or atleast not make it a point to watch it.

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 5:13 pm

i love brand newwwwwwwwww! and i know what you mean with the music! haha. good thing basset hounds aren’t trendy ;)

Heather (Heather's Dish) September 7, 2011 at 9:58 pm

ugh, sorry about the crappy day girl! sending some good vibes your way for tomorrow…and thank goodness marshall’s almost back! hubbies tend to know how to make things better :)

Jodie September 7, 2011 at 10:00 pm

my thing? trees:) i usually shy away when things get trendy.

Carrie@shrinkingcarrie September 7, 2011 at 10:17 pm

I like, what I like. If its trendy, it happens. I still can’t deny that I like something just because everyone else likes it. I don’t go into it thinking I’m going to like it just because everyone else does. I’m not the kind of person who discovers new things first, so I may be trendy without trying to be. Does that make sense? Just re-reading what I wrote, and I’m pretty sure I’ve confused myself.

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 5:00 pm

TOTALLY made sense!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga September 7, 2011 at 10:18 pm

Not sure how many posts you catch of mine, but a couple days ago I posted about owl “bling” (necklace) and that cell phone crotched cover that was an owl. And prior to that, about 2 weeks ago, posted about some owl lamps I saw and also some owl cookie jars (anthropologie)…and thought of you or linked you b/c i know they are totally your thing!

I dont really have a thing.

If I deem it “cute” in the moment, then I want it!

Sorry about your bad day!

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:59 pm

i know you have been IG’n owls like crazy lately and i love it! i did catch the cookie jar post and thought i’d commented, guess not. i think your thing is amazing camera equipment. or it should be :)

Sara September 7, 2011 at 10:20 pm

My thing is penguins!!! Haha. I try not to get too crazy with them, but Nick totally encourages it at times. He too doesn’t want to live in a house filled with bird stuff ;P

Mary (A Merry Life) September 7, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Sorry about your crappy day. :(

I like owls. I think it’s sorta surprising that they are so trendy these days. I’ve spent the majority of my life looking around for owl stuff because my mom loooooves owls. I’ve bought her an owl figurine or something on every trip I’ve gone on EVER. I guess all that looking for owls eventually got me to like them too. I don’t buy much these days but I love looking at all the stuff on my owl barn and etsy. :)

I’m not sure I have a thing. I’m trying to think but coming up with nada. I like purple, stripes & plaid, and pit bulls. I guess no one would know the pit bulls one since I don’t have a pit bull anymore, but I loooooove them. For a while I actually wrote a blog about pit bulls because it bothered me when states passed laws against them and all. Unfortunately I can’t have one in NZ either so I guess I’m going to have to wait a few years until I can own/adopt another.

I tend to shy away from stuff when it becomes trendy. I’m not sure why that is but once something is trendy/mainstream I don’t quite like it as much.

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:58 pm

pit bulls! that makes me happy.

Carrie@shrinkingcarrie September 7, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Oh, and my thing is pumpkins. I know, weird. I decorate my house with them year round.

Meg September 7, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Boo! Sorry you’re having a bad day! I’ve been a little grumpy today as well. I recommend quality cuddle time with the furbabies!

I’ll hand it to you, you like houndstooth a leeetle more than I do! I really like monkeys (especially sock monkeys) and frogs! When things become more popular, it kind of turns me off. I think it’s because I’m not good at sharing (I’m not!) and I like my own thing.

Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli September 7, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Before I even read what you wrote, I was already thinking “sounds like a good cereal for dinner nite” Haha! I had a meh day today and just finished up a bowl of puffins with peanut flour and almond milk…mmm!

I don’t really have a “thing”…well, unless you count my latest obsession with coffee mugs. Not sure what happened, but over the last month or so, I’ve bought like 5! I’m gonna need a bigger cabinet soon!

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:25 pm

dude. i can relate. we became a “mug only” household and now our cupboards are bursting at the seams!

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats September 7, 2011 at 10:40 pm

Sorry you had a crappy day lady! I’m right there with ya. I know that TOMS are pretty trendy but there is a sweet pair of houndstooth ones out for fall right now. I have tried them on so many times but just cannot get myself to buy them. lol.

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:58 pm

i know–there are three different houndstooth toms i NEED in my life!

Maren September 7, 2011 at 10:40 pm

ugh. hope you have a better day tomorrow! When Nate and I were in Omaha last weekend, we saw an owl land on the light pole by his house! We stopped the truck to get a better look and it flew away to the next light pole. It was SO cool. I’ve never seen one in real life before, so it was pretty neat. I thought of you :)

Jess@atasteofconfidence September 7, 2011 at 10:48 pm

I’m sorry you had a bad day:( I hope tomorrow is better! I love all the owl stuff. I recently saw an owl on my brother’s wife’s house. OMG. HUGE!

Ali Mc September 7, 2011 at 10:54 pm

I don’t know what my “thing” is….maybe wood! I like wood things. but when I was young…ok I stop this obsession in my late teens, I collected dalmatians! yep EVERYTHING it was way too much. I gave them to a church and they sold the stuff at their auction :D

anyway….I just wanted to say that when something I like gets trendy I like it the same, I just make sure everyone knows I liked it first ;) lol

Ali Mc September 7, 2011 at 10:56 pm

PS: do you think any of your followers will send you one of these gifts?!?!? – hint hint followers!

Lindsay @ bikingbefore bed September 7, 2011 at 10:57 pm

I second Ali’s comment above… this reminded me of a gift registry! I used to be to be obsessed with Roxy… so I can feel your volcom love.

Christin@purplebirdblog September 7, 2011 at 11:16 pm

Manatees are totally my major thing, but you know about my love for owls as well. Consequently, I have more owl things than manatee things because… well… there seemingly aren’t as many manatee things around. I do have a necklace though… and a tattoo. :)

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:24 pm

manatees! i think that is so rad.

Missy September 7, 2011 at 11:29 pm

Ha! You know I always think of you when I see owls, houndstooth or peacocks! I almost got you something else the other day to send but I figured you may think I am a crazy stalker – but I may do it anyway :)

I love dragonflies and fleur de lis.
I don’t like when things get trendy because I hate looking like I jumped on board because it’s popular; yet I can’t help what I like, trendy or not. So I just roll with it. I also used to love shirts with stars in the center – simply because I love the Star-Bellied Sneetches (Dr. Seuss)!

Janetha September 8, 2011 at 4:24 pm

i wish i had known those two things before i sent you a package! dangit. noted :)

Brittany @ Life of a Bama Girl September 7, 2011 at 11:47 pm

I love elephants and peacocks. I tend to like some things that are trendy but I like to be different for the most part. If everyone is wearing something that I don’t like I won’t wear it just because everyone else is but if it happens to be something I like I will. I guess that kind of makes sense sorry if confusing!

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather September 7, 2011 at 11:52 pm

So much cute owl stuff!! I’m not too into owls, but those sandals make me want to GET into loving owls. Hope your day gets better :)

Liz J September 8, 2011 at 12:05 am

I really love the kokopelli man… he represents fertility.. I did not know this when I started to like/collect him when I was 18! :)

Mama Pea September 8, 2011 at 12:44 am

I love pea stuff (obviously).

I have seen so much owl stuff lately–they are back in fashion. I always want to buy it for you!

Heather September 8, 2011 at 12:55 am

Sorry to hear that you had a bad day! If it makes you feel any better mine was pretty crummy too!

Koko@KokoLikes September 8, 2011 at 1:40 am

I LOVE OWLS… sooo happy someone else is equally into them (and that myowlbarn website is out of control).

cathy September 8, 2011 at 5:57 am

i’ve been seeing owl stuff all over this summer and yes, i always think of you, janetha! everything from pier 1 dishes to necklaces – i think you picked a great thing to have as your thing.
sorry you had such a blech day. that definitely calls for cereal.
my think is retro/unique/fun tshirts – i love to collect them and wear them. my favourites are a couple of my dad’s t’s from the 70s…!
it doesn’t matter to me if something is in or not…if i like it, i’m going with it.
here’s to a better day today!

Paige @ Running Around Normal September 8, 2011 at 7:36 am

sea horses! And I agree- owls are everywhere right now!

I hope today is a much better day for you, love!! <3

katie September 8, 2011 at 7:58 am

Oh I love your love for owls, just like my love for hello kitty and essie nail polish, obsessed!

Love the owl prints, very pretty, and the bowl with the chopsticks is cool!!

love u! xoxo <3

Anna September 8, 2011 at 7:59 am

Love the obsession! I have a weird love of skulls and crossbones…not sure if it is a pirate or goth thing? Really neither..but I have mugs, plates, cups, pencils, socks, scarfs, keychains, etc… its fun to have a collection!

Corey @ Learning Patience September 8, 2011 at 8:08 am

I have gnomes…lots of gnomes…and I love them. I actually own my own oil company and I even called it GnomeX (for gnomex exploration) ..i love them!

xoxo from Trinidad
p.s. Hope your days goes better today!

Pure2raw twins September 8, 2011 at 8:36 am

hope you have a better day today :)

you are too cute with the owls!

I am a pirate girl, guess that it my thing, it is not an animal but the idea I guess, haha,

Kerryne September 8, 2011 at 8:56 am

Owls are the “in” thing right now. I think they are adorable but it seems like everywhere I go its an obsession. I went to an Owl themed bridal shower a couple of months ago. To die for cute. You would have been in owl heaven!

I hope you are having a better day today. I hate those bad days. Nothing worse. :(

Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) September 8, 2011 at 9:05 am

My mom used to have a thing for owls back in the 70’s, so I inherited all of her vintage owl stuff back in high school, I loved it!

Not sure if I have a “thing”, I’ve liked hello kitty since I was about five, so everyone (still!) gives me hello kitty stuff, but I’ve pretty much grown out of it. I am also known as the cupcake queen in my family- I always bring cupcakes whereever I go to family gatherings! So everyone buys me cupcake stuff :)

xo

Heather @ Better With Veggies September 8, 2011 at 9:30 am

I love all the owls – it’s funny how once you love something, you get every version of it ever created. :) In high school, I had a friend who loved elephants and I always looked for elephant “Stuff” when we were travelling. For me, it’s really only a winter obsession – SNOWMEN! I absolutely hove snowmen and they are invading my winter home decorations. :)

Jessica @ Healthy Dairyland September 8, 2011 at 9:55 am

Penguins!!! I absolutely LOVE penguins!!! I have a penguin keychain, stuffed penguin, penguin plates, cups with penguins, penguin Christmas ornaments, and one of my best friends even has a penguin tattoo (it’s why we are friends haha).

Hot Coco September 8, 2011 at 10:02 am

1. i have owls. what is your “thing”?
Owls are messengers; I like that! :-) I used to have [too] many “things.” I collected Victoriana, anything to do with “The Phantom of the Opera” (musical play), angels, Christmas trees and ornaments (for several years, there were 9 fully decorated Christmas trees of varying sizes in my home during the holidays. 9.), fabric (by the yard and the bolt), and sewing notions (antique lace? sign me up!).
I don’t collect anything, anymore. I’ve given away all of the above, save for three Willow Tree angels, 1 six-foot tree and 1 18-inch tree, and fabric and notions that are actually intended for projects.
2. when something begins to get trendy, do you tend to like it more or less?
If I like something, I like it; I don’t care what anyone else thinks about it or how its trending. :-)

Hot Coco September 8, 2011 at 10:03 am

*how it’s trending, not “its.” :-)

sarah September 8, 2011 at 10:39 am

Haha, I’m sending my Aunt a link to your blog as we speak. In high school, she was utterly devoted to ALL things owl related! She’s grown out of it since, but my grandma doesn’t believe her. thus, she gets owl themed eveeerything from my grandma for all holiday events.

But I hope your day gets better! Yesterday was an awful day for me too. Here’s to a better today!

Lisa September 8, 2011 at 10:50 am

Sorry you had a bad day! :-( and i love the owl teapot and sandals!

Katie September 8, 2011 at 10:58 am

My day was pretty wretched too, so I mean it from the depths of my heart when I say, “I’m sorry you’re day sucked”. :)

love this post, because every time I see owls or houndstooth I think of you! ha ha.

My thing is stars, and I have always loved them. I am really picky though. I think once something gets “trendier” its everywhere, which means at least 50% of everything you find is trashy, and I happen to be picky. lol. I don’t think I like it less or more, but I just get pickier about it. :)

At least you don’t have to wake up today and eat at the Pancake House. :)
