toning + tacos.

by Janetha on August 1, 2011

in meals,moves,random rambles

this morning started unlike most monday mornings. i have to be to work at 7 AM every monday for a meeting. this is an hour and a half earlier than my arrival time the rest of the work week. because i severely lack morning skills, i always set three alarms for monday morning. marshall sets at least one, sometimes two. he has to be at the meeting, too.. we work together.

this morning i was in a deep slumber.. dreaming about hanging out with blog friends in real life (what? you don’t do that? i know you do) and i somehow bypassed ALL of the alarm clocks. ALL OF THEM!

i opened my dry, contact-laden eyes (tell me i am not the only one who leaves her contacts in for weeks at a time…) and took a look at my phone.

6:24.

“shit! shit shit shit shit shit!” is all i could manage to say as i sprang out of bed, with marshall following my lead. apparently he took a look at his phone, too, while i was “shit”-ting all over the place.

i suddenly became the multitasker of the century. it was like i was out to win an olympic medal for the fastest time in getting ready for work. and not just any medal.. the gold medal.

i brushed my teeth and put on deodorant while i peed. i flat ironed my hair between swipes of eyeshadow and mascara. i tore through my unfolded mount-everest-sized pile of laundry trying to find something appropriate for work. all the more reason i need to get a handle on things and FOLD MY DAMN CLOTHES.

luckily my lunch was already packed up and breakfast every monday morning is eaten at a meeting for work, so all i had to do after getting ready was grab my vitamins and supplements and kiss penny & randy goodbye. yes, there is always time to kiss your dogs.

it takes anywhere between 13 and 21 minutes to get to my office from my house. this depends on if i get stuck behind a train, if the freeway meter light is on, what traffic is like and how fast i decide to drive.  i left my house at 6:42 and got to my office at 6:59! one minute to spare.

i will take that gold medal, thankyouverymuch.

because i was so rushed getting ready, the rest of my day was really off. i didn’t feel quite right and i couldn’t wait to leave my office.  i followed my plans for breakfast and lunch, then went home to have my pre-workout snack (after staying 45 minutes past the time i should have left, mind you.)

i had some trader joe’s greek yogurt paired with granola that i received in the mail from a special friend. i changed into my gym clothes and then it was off to gold’s.

today was my lower workout day. i have said this before and i will say it again.. i have big legs. but in a good way. i have muscular legs. i like to keep them tight and toned, but am not really interested in gaining more muscle on my lower half.  that’s why i typically do more reps and moves with a challenging-but-not-impossible weight when i do lower body. my upper body is a different story, as i am really looking to achieve some muscle gains and have biceps similar to katie’s. have you seen those? she needs a permit for those guns.

where was i? oh, yeah, lower body! i will share my workout with you guys because it’s been awhile since i have done that. i got a few ideas for today’s workout from naomi’s post. it’s a good one! check it out.

by the way, i am not a professionally trained fitness guru, so don’t print this workout out, do it, get hurt and sue me. got it? good.

warm up:

  • 100 jumping jacks
  • 100 butt kicks
  • 100 high knees

body weight + free weight circuits!

i did each circuit three times through with no rest before moving onto the next.

circuit three:

machine work!

i did each set slow and controlled then took a 30 second rest between sets.

free motion step up machine:

  • 24 reps @ 30 lbs (second to highest step setting, alternating legs)
  • 24 reps @ 35 lbs (second to highest step setting, alternating legs)
  • 24 reps @ 35 lbs (highest step setting, alternating legs)

seated single leg press:

  • 12 each leg @ 120#
  • 12 each leg @ 110#
  • 12 each leg @ 105#

standing single leg calf raise:

  • 4 sets of 12 each leg (body weight)

seated calf machine: (that works both the calf and the front muscle along your shin.. what’s that called? see, i am no professional)

  • 3 sets of 12 @ 100#

lying hamstring curls:

  • 3 sets of 12 @ 65#

the end! that took an hour.

i came home and got to work on dinner.. tacos! and not just any tacos…

IMG_1545

tacos with tortillas made from scratch! it’s a first for me. i usually buy tortillas, but i have been inspired by mama pea’s cookbook, peas and thank you, and decided to try my hand at homemade tortillas.

IMG_1549

guess what? it was easy.  (yes, i still need a rolling pin.)

IMG_1553

like.. so easy. IMG_1557

and so cheap! i had all the ingredients in my kitchen already, actually.

IMG_1556

i didn’t exactly follow mama pea’s meatless meal standards with our tacos, though.

IMG_1565

i prepared some ground chicken with trader joe’s taco seasoning and diced onion from the farmers market. i  served the tacos with black beans, plain greek yogurt, shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, smashed avocado and salsa.

IMG_1558

IMG_1568

while we ate our tacos, i told marshall that now that i know how easy it is to make tortilla from scratch, we won’t ever have to buy them again! unless he wants hard taco shells made from corn.. hey, mama pea, you got a recipe for that?

i am off to clean my house. my anxiety level is climbing the longer i let everything sit. plus, marshall is working hard on the yard, so i need to make myself useful.

hasta luego!

Qs~

1. how long does it take you to get ready in the AM? what is the fastest you’ve ever gotten ready?

2. tacos: soft shell or hard shell?

Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn August 1, 2011 at 10:24 pm

Ahahahaha love you. I definitely did that a LOT during senior year. I just didn’t go to homeroom, like ever.

Naomi August 1, 2011 at 10:26 pm

oh YOU! i am so thrilled you used some of the moves from the lower body workout from today! Killer, right?! My legs absolutely respond better to not lifting so heavy as well. I think its because were SHAWWWTIES! :) I do love changing it up often though, sometimes ill pair heavier sets with quick, body weight plyos to really shock! its fun to mix and match and see what workouts!

mama peas tacos?! hellooooo best post workout meal everrrr! looks deliicous!!

janetha @ meals & moves August 2, 2011 at 1:34 pm

I need to steal some more moves from you soon. It was a fun change! I ran out of time before the one legged bosu crunch, though :(

sofia August 1, 2011 at 10:27 pm

wow. record AM time, lady! very impressive.

though i don’t do much to pretty myself in the AN (who at work am i trying to impress? really now), i spend a great deal of time relaxing and getting ready slowly – i wake up at 6:30AM to leave at 8:20. i love to shower, drink my coffee, eat breakfast, browse the internets, sometimes blow dry my hair, get confused about what i’m gonna wear… you get the idea. i need lots of time.

i am all about the soft shelled taco. i’ve never tried to make ’em before, soft or hard shelled. these look great!

Katherine August 1, 2011 at 10:29 pm

I usually take about 45 minutes to get ready if I am doing make up and straightening my hair. Quickest time: probably about 2 minutes lol.

Katy @ notjustacarnivore August 1, 2011 at 10:30 pm

Totally soft shell! Early in the school year, I spend a good hour getting ready…putting on makeup, flat ironing my hair, dressing well. By the end, you’re lucky if you see me in anything other than yoga clothes with a dirty ponytail…less than 5 minutes. I hardly look fit to teach college. Goal for this year: look like I belong in my position.

Kristina @ spabettie August 1, 2011 at 10:52 pm

Jason and I were talking about making our own tortillas just this weekend! :) those look SO good! I like soft shell corn tortillas. (I love the flour tortillas, but miss them so because of gluten…)

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Looks like you need to talk to Lindsey right below this!

Lindsey @ Gluten-Free Lindsey August 1, 2011 at 11:15 pm

I was surprised to find out how easy tortillas are to make too! I made some GF ones recently :)

I like to get up an hour before I need to leave.. that way I can take my sweet time. I’m a bit slow in the AM.

Ellen Clifford August 1, 2011 at 11:18 pm

I’m one if those people who needs to work out in the morning or I am a total grump. So I have to get up waaay before I need to be anywhere.
As for tacos, I’m not a big fan, but I prefer soft tortillas in general…

Jamie August 1, 2011 at 11:20 pm

Ooh.. be careful about sleeping in your contacts!! I did that and my corneas got ulcers and scars on them. Plus they started to grow their own blood vessels (apparently the cornea is one of the only tissues in the body without its own blood supply) because the contacts inhibited nutrients from getting to my corneas. If the ulcers or blood vessels go over your pupil you can go blind. This happened to me about a year and a half ago and I still do not qualify for LASIK because my corneas haven’t recovered. Working out in glasses sucks!! I am super blind and have to wear them for everything. Boo!

The tacos look yummy though. And I am totally not brave enough to make my own tortillas. I am a white girl living in south texas, pretty sure I would get laughed at.

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 2:58 pm

My mom is going to LOVE you for this. I have had many-an-eye problem due to my bad habit of sleeping in my contacts for, literally, months at a time. I have had contacts since sixth grade and have been sleeping in them since sixth grade. I am horrible. Thank you for the reminder that I need to get a grip on it.. but honestly it’s a bad habit that I need to break!

momma b. August 1, 2011 at 11:22 pm

Ahhh yes – I used to have 4 alarm clocks set in various spots in my bedroom – I was crazy then too (seems like they started going off about the time I dozed off haha)! Now that I’m much older I like to allow 1.5 hours just because I can but if I’m in a hurry 30-40 min will work!

Those tortillas look awesome and good! You don’t need a rolling pin, the wine bottle seems to be doing just fine :)

Soft tortillas most of the time.

xo

Carrie@shrinkingcarriewww August 1, 2011 at 11:45 pm

Holy crap you are making me tired! Sounds like a pretty fun start to a new week!
Those taco’s look awesome, Im gonna have to get mama pea’s cookbook and get to cookin’!

Mama Pea August 1, 2011 at 11:49 pm

Nice work!!!

I don’t have a corn recipe yet…may have to work on that…

Lisa @ I'm an Okie August 1, 2011 at 11:57 pm

I’m impressed that you can move at warp speed like that!

and love the tortillas from scratch…it looks like I need to break down and get her book!

dana @ my little celebration August 2, 2011 at 12:15 am

Hmmmm, the healthy me would choose soft tacos. But the fat kid would say hard :D

kathleen August 2, 2011 at 12:22 am

@Jamie… that is some scary stuff. Was just laughing to myself how I can judge a reaaally good night out by waking up the next day with perfect vision… And then bam! Ulcers, scars and growing their own blood vessels!!! Will be more careful next time ha!!

That meal. Looks. Delicious. Yum. Send some to NZ? ;) Your workout looks pretty thorough!! I’m looking forward to something more relaxing tonight, cardio and yoga! Woop!

Will be trying those tortillas I think! I like how you used the wine bottle as a rolling pin by the way.

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Haha thanks, keepin it classy ;)

Stefanie @TheNewHealthy August 2, 2011 at 12:37 am

You definitely deserve the gold medal! Sleeping through 3 alarms is like the story of my life. Seriously, what’s wrong with me?! haha

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga August 2, 2011 at 1:10 am

Great tacos and I love the rolling pin :)

And I love that picture!

Lomo-fi to the rescue, and Hefe and Toaster :)

Saw that you told Jessica about an app. That’s cool! Inquiring minds need to know and love finding out about new apps and filters!

Lindsay August 2, 2011 at 1:29 am

When I need to eat breakfast before I leave, I need to get up an hour and a half before I need to leave if not, I can be ready to go in 30 minutes! :D

Kerryne August 2, 2011 at 1:32 am

We need to work out together since we frequent the same gym :) I love me some hard shell taco’s but I LOVE me some soft shell too… I don’t think I could choose one over the other ;)

I think you deserve a medal. That is SPEEDY fast. Rock on girl!

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:02 pm

Do you go to Btfl Golds?!

Kerryne August 2, 2011 at 9:51 pm

I sure do! :)

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 11:26 pm

What? How did I not know this?! Or I knew and forgot?? When do you usually go?

Kerryne August 3, 2011 at 2:02 am

Well I just don’t know! LOL! When my life is normal… meaning kids are in school I like to go in the morning but right now I have to just go when I can, which hasn’t been much. I will be doing two a days in my very near future, morning and evening. Yay for me! What about you?

Janetha August 3, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Two a days?! You are intense. Are you going to compete? I go around 5-6 each evening.

Kerryne August 3, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Yeah, I am competing… 9 weeks from now. YIKES. I have a lot of work to do, and a lot of cellulite to hide.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) August 2, 2011 at 2:00 am

I’m with Momma B- your wine bottle is working fine! How yummy to make tortillas from scratch! I like soft tortillas- especially whole grain corn- mmm.

I can get ready super fast- especially since I got my Japanese hair straightening. 4 minutes or so with the blowdryer and flat brush. 5 or so for mascara and a swipe of eye liner. Toss on the clothes- boom. Derek says I’m low maintenance. and he’s right in that regard.

I LOVE that photo of Gold’s gym- you have introduced me to yet another app that I love- COlorsplash is THE BOMBBBBBB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!

Eden August 2, 2011 at 2:05 am

you need to help me with that color splash tomorrow. Everything I do looks like a fingerpainting!

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) August 2, 2011 at 2:10 am

It’s easy if you just magnify the crap out of it :-)

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I have created a monster! haha

Eden August 2, 2011 at 2:04 am

I feel special that Im right after Deb ;)
I dream about you often.

That’s right, your man better watch it!

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I thought you were my man?

Sara August 2, 2011 at 3:42 am

If you guys are in the mood one day, you should try fried flour tortillas as taco shells. Trust me, it’s delicious. (I even blogged about it! hah. http://amongthetortillas.com/2011/03/06/recipe-fried-taco-shells/)

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Checking this now!

Blog is the New Black August 2, 2011 at 5:37 am

I often fall asleep with my contacts in when I nap, or on weekends when I’m out socializing… it feels AWFUL in the AM! I hate that… it’s bad for our eyes, too! I hate being a contact-wearer.

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:08 pm

me too. i want lasik!

cathy August 2, 2011 at 6:13 am

i’ve got no medal for you, but am sending you two thumbs up on that record-breaking morning, j! 6:59 – you sure you didn’t plan it that way?!!
i can get ready in less than 10 minutes. however, one of my august goals is to actually spend MORE time on *beautifying* myself…we shall see how that goes!
great work on making your own tortillas!

Lauren August 2, 2011 at 6:46 am

You are some kind of superwoman. Seriously, running around like that all day and then coming home to make your own tortillas. I bow to you my dear. ;)

greatfulbody August 2, 2011 at 7:10 am

Oh man, multitasking while getting ready is something I definitely do a lot! Depending on the day ahead, it takes me different amounts of time – it’s the difference between straightening my hair, or a messy bun. :-P I loooooove soft shell tacos, yours look great and so yummy!

Holly @ The Runny Egg August 2, 2011 at 7:43 am

That is awesome that you made it to work just in time! That has happened to me: it usually takes me 40 minutes or so to get ready (that includes breakfast + showering and getting ready) but there have been mornings when I sleep in and have 15 minutes to get ready and out the door and I manage to do that. I wish I could do that every morning but not be so rushed.

Kayla @ Sprouty Buns August 2, 2011 at 7:44 am

I wake up at 5 am, workout, shower at 6, eat breakfast/read blogs until 6:45, dry hair/dress/make-up and am out the door at 7:20. I hate being rushed in the mornings … if I don’t follow my normal morning routine I feel out of whack all day!

Heather (Heather's Dish) August 2, 2011 at 7:51 am

oh my gosh i HATE mornings like that! you were a rock star though…seriously, you deserve that gold medal! i totally leave my contacts in too but go for the cute pulled-back messy look with the hair. I said i go for it…don’t necessarily achieve it ;)

Jane @ Broccolini & Cheese August 2, 2011 at 7:55 am

I have always wanted to make home made taco shells. Think I need to pick up Mama Pea’s book asap because those look awesome!

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:10 pm

You should! I am shocked at how easy it was.

Hope August 2, 2011 at 7:58 am

I’m impressed that you got ready so quickly!

Those tacos look delicious! Mexican is my favorite food ever! I prefer soft shell tacos. I do occasionally like the hard shell ones too.

sharelle @ essentialingredient August 2, 2011 at 8:44 am

bahaha i laughed so hard when you said “while i was ‘shit’ting all over the place.”
that workout looks like a killer. next leg day, im doing it! sans machines.
:)

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:10 pm

The circuits were a totally good workout by themselves, for sure!

sarah (sarah learns) August 2, 2011 at 9:09 am

oh man, i HATE mornings like that!!! my normal morning routine takes about an hour and a half-2 hours – but that includes eating breakfast at home and blogging! i get up extra early so i can take my time.

BUT, i have had those “oh shit!” mornings more than i’d like. i think i’ve gotten ready and thrown together meals for the day in less than a half hour a couple times!

i hope today goes more with the plan.

Presley (Run Pretty) August 2, 2011 at 9:23 am

Hahaha I just laughed out loud during your entire story. I hate that feeling… looking over at the clock and anticipating having like 10 more minutes of sleep… and then “SHIT.” You described it perfectly :)

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:11 pm

I know, it’s even worse when you wake up naturally and think you have an hour more to sleep before the alarm and you have, like, 3 minutes.

Annette@EnjoyYourHealthyLife August 2, 2011 at 9:25 am

WOW! Gold medal goes definitely to YOU!

Love the moves section, I am gonna try that all out. And SOFT for tacos, thankyouverymuch ;)

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather August 2, 2011 at 9:38 am

Whoop whoop for lower body day! We had tacos last night too… soft shell all the way!

natalie (the sweets life) August 2, 2011 at 9:39 am

i hate that feeling of rushing around when you’ve overslept! I get up over an hour before I have to get ready bc I work out first thing…and then it typically only takes me 25 minutes or so to get ready. I like to think that’s pretty low-maintenance :)

your tortilla look incredible btw…i’ve been meaning to try and make my own! you’ve inspired me :)

Alta August 2, 2011 at 9:52 am

Nice moves! Those hamstring moves with the ball definitely can burn after a bit. And I love me some homemade tortillas. Let’s see…it usually takes me about 30 minutes to get ready. This is just the actual “getting ready” part though – you know, shower+makeup+hair+getting dressed. I actually get up at 5 and don’t get out the door until 6:40 or so most days – but there’s also a workout in there. I get up, make coffee, pack lunches (they’re pretty much assembled, this is more of a throw-in-bags process), make hubs a smoothie, and then work out. Then shower and get ready. And I prefer soft tacos all the way!

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 2, 2011 at 11:29 am

Good workout!! I actually DID print a workout of yours out yesterday. But I won’t sue you. Definitely sore today…love it!

Stephanie @ extremebalance.net/blog August 2, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Wow, that’s a lotta leg work! Impressive! I was a soft fish taco kind of girl until I became allergic to fish… now, I’m pretty ambivalent. Which is good, because you’d be amazed how much Mexican food is NOT available in Brazil. They think guacamole is crazy. Avocado is a fruit and to be eaten sweet here. They don’t even *know* what they’re missing…

I once woke up 32 minutes before I had to be teaching, and the thing about university is that the students just *leave* if I’m not there, and it doesn’t reflect well on me at all. One ponytail, one pair of black dress pants and a black sweater, teeth brushed and a swipe of eyeliner and I was out the door… no time to stop in my office to regroup, but I *MADE* it, dammit! Ah, the good ol’ days! :D

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:12 pm

I have been meaning to try avocado in a sweet setting but haven’t. is it good?

Stephanie @ extremebalance.net/blog August 2, 2011 at 9:03 pm

hard to say. The first way it was offered to me was just with white sugar poured on top, and it didn’t thrill me. As I ate it, I kept waiting for it to be savoury—and the crunchiness of the sugar was off-putting. But I’ve also heard of an avocado “juice” made with pineapple and milk/yogurt, so before I pan it completely, I’ll try the juice.

Avocado frostings are nice so I think sweet avocado could be, too… but change can take time to really grab hold, you know?

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 11:24 pm

Definitely. I am curious to try it!

One Healthy Apple (Yelena) August 2, 2011 at 12:33 pm

I laughed through your whole morning speed routing post ;)

I get ready in phases- probably for a total of 20 minutes. I have to do my hair the night before because it takes so long to dry that I would literally be 2 hours late if I ever attempted to do the whole thing in the morning. Plus I lack most of my brain cells until at least 10 am.

P.S. your leg routine sounds awesome.

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats August 2, 2011 at 12:36 pm

Rushed mornings always seem to throw the entire day off! So frustrating! Those tacos look amazing! :)

Depending on the day, it usually takes me about 45 minutes to get ready if I shower and everything. I don’t have any idea what the fastest I have ever gotten ready is though!

I usually go for hard shell tacos but if homemade tortillas are involved I will always pick soft! :)

Rachel C August 2, 2011 at 1:01 pm

What about Randy and Penny? Do you just let them out in the yard, and leave food for them for the day?

The majority of my morning revolves around the animals. Walking and feeding the dogs, and then one more short walk before I leave for the day, and then feeding the cats and scooping litter, and changing the water in all of the water bowls.

I am so impressed that you were able to get to your meeting with a minute to spare. Good job. ;)

I need to buy Mama Peas book, your tacos look amazing.

janetha @ meals & moves August 2, 2011 at 1:33 pm

We have the lowest maintenance dogs ever! We have a dog door so they let themselves in and out, and we have a large fenced yard. Marshall feeds them in the morning and they only eat once a day. They get a treat any time one of us leaves the house (the last to leave gives it to them) and they usually go back to bed after we leave for work! They are super lazy. I am glad they have each other, though, because they play with each other all day when they want to be rowdy, then sleep on each other when they want to be lazy. We will take them on walks at night. Marshall scoops the poop (so nice of him) and we both always give them lots of water. I can’t imagine having to do all that in the morning, though, because I am always late as it is! haha.

Jess@atasteofconfidence August 2, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Wow great job getting ready! I definitely keep my contacts in for a long time too. Oops!

Roz@weightingfor50 August 2, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Wow…really impressive that you got to work on time!!! Love your rolling pin, and love soft tacos. Hope your Tuesday morning was better than Monday.

I have been meaning to make corn tortillas forever now! They are also just as easy!

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:13 pm

recipe! please?

Megan (Braise The Roof) August 2, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Damn, that is impressive! I think that’s gotta be a record- I’ve gotten ready for work fast, but I don’t think I’ve ever beat 20 minutes. Those tacos look incredible. I usually order/make soft tacos, but I have a soft spot (no pun intended) for the hard shell- I don’t know why I don’t have the hard ones more often!

LauraJayne August 2, 2011 at 3:51 pm

I’ve seen so many awesome dishes from Mama Pea’s cookbook that I pretty much have to buy it now! I love tacos, but toning not so much. I’m afraid of weights. Not because I’m afraid of bulking up, but because I’m literally afraid of them. Like I’m afraid of marbles. Totally irrational and real.

Janetha August 2, 2011 at 3:53 pm

I have a friend who is afraid of stickers! She can’t use bandaids.
