hola! how was your monday?
mine was jam packed. early morning meeting (i totally just typed “meating”—wtf?), breakfast at the original pancake house (egg whites + oatmeal, of course), worked a little overtime, had a TOUGH bikram class (not sure why it was so hard today) and now i am settling in to enjoy a nice dinner that marshall made.
this is the second night in a row marshall has made 100% of dinner for me! usually i make all of it or we both do a little.. but he has been stepping up and cooking some amazing stuff. i think that grilling culinary class we took changed him.
tonight’s dinner is garlic peppercorn rubbed grilled trumpeter, potatoes roasted in fresh basil + balsamic vinegar & steamed asparagus.
yum, yum, yum.
he’s a good cook. and a good husband. i think i will keep him.

road food!
we have a road trip coming up (with the pups!), so i have been making lists like a mad woman. if there is one thing i can do, it is make lists. i actually could make a list of the various lists i need to make for this trip!
- things to do before we leave
- things to pack for the dogs
- things to pack for myself
- things to pack for the road
- thing to pack for while we are there
- FOOD!
see? toldja. my latest list has been specifically the food we will take for the drive. we have a 9-10 hour drive each way.. we are bound to need a snack (or ten). one of the best parts about road trips is the constant snacking to pass the time.. right?
here is a list of my favorite snacks for the road—all of which we will be taking on our trip. most of this stuff is handy and not hard to eat if you are the driver. also, all the prepwork will be done before leaving home, so we don’t have to mess with it on the road.
also.. you will notice this is all fairly healthy. road trips don’t have to mean unhealthy eating!
yogurt covered pretzels.
peanut butter filled pretzels.
aaaand probably regular pretzels, too, because one can never have enough pretzel varieties.
wasabi peas.
apples + nut butter.
bars galore!
dried apple rings.
string cheese.
raw veggies.
i will probably make a batch of basil hummus to go with the veggies because i have a bunch of basil in the fridge and i don’t want it to go bad. we will have a little cooler with us, so the hummus will hang out in there.
oh, and let’s not forget road drinks! don’t worry, no booze.
kombucha for me.
izze for marshall.
the pups will have water. well, unless they sneak a twelve pack of heineken when we aren’t looking…
marshall and i both hate fast food and avoid it at all costs. so, since we will be driving during both breakfast and lunch, i am going to make a few substantial items to bring along.
for breakfast..
protein shakes to go.
we are leaving real early, so protein shakes are a great portable breakfast. this way we can hit the road super early and still be properly fueled for the long drive ahead.
my favorite combo right now is 1 cup almond milk, 1/4 cup POM juice, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 whole peach and 15 ice cubes. sometimes i add spinach.. but not always.
my favorite bottle to hold protein shakes is a blender bottle—it is the only one that holds a WHOLE shake without any leftover.
and in case that doesn’t hold us over for some reason, we will be sure to have some chobani + muesli.
and for lunch..
turkey sandwiches.
i have a turkey or tuna sandwich almost every day for lunch anyway (had one today, in fact), so this lunch is nothing new.. and it happens to be super portable.
pb & j.
because what if we aren’t in the mood for turkey?!
so, that’s the plan! i still have a couple days to prepare.. but i also have a few more lists to make. i better go!
Qs~
1. quick! think of the last list you made. what was it for?
2. favorite road trip snacks?

What a great list! I love practically all of those snacks. In fact, we have some wasabi peas laying around that I might bring along for our next road trip…
My husband gets “in the zone” during road trips and usually doesn’t feel hungry unless something is put in front of him to munch on. I, however, am usually thinking about my stomach, so I make sure to bring things that I can bring (and eat) a lot of! I’ve done bars before, as well as carrots, rice cakes, boiled eggs (peeled), Sunny Seeds, bananas, nuts…I could go on, but I think you get the picture. :)
Have lots of fun!!
1. I made a list this morning for our weekly meal plan. I also made a list of 26th birthday goals this afternoon. And a list of blog to-do’s this evening. I have a list problem apparently!
2. I really like homemade sandwiches on road trips. Especially cheese and jam sandwiches because those are better when they have time to “marinate.”
i don’t leave home without wasabi peas or nut butter, but not together. just staples. not sure why. sweet and salty maybe?
I wanted to grill dinner tonight but it was POURING rain…I wish I would have been at your house!!
Also…you guys totally went to Sprouts (or Sunflower) for your snacking goodies! I have so many of those bulk bin items in my cabinets! Those peanut butter filled pretzels are the end of me.
Yes I am in love with Sunflower! I go there so often.
You can never go wrong with PB and J.
Where are you going?
The last list I made was what I needed to do on my last day of cleaning my old apartment before turning in my keys. Good times.
We are heading to South Lake Tahoe. Good luck cleaning and moving!
I don’t do lists: if it doesn’t fit in my brain, it won’t get done… perhaps that’s a touch of control freak? Probably…
I’ve driven back and forth through the Rockies, the Cariboos, and the Coast Range, and my fave go-to food are pre-made pumpkin protein pancakes with a little chocolate PB. Easy protein, and can be eaten with one hand while I drive, drive, drive… :)
cute puppers in the car!! and look at all those pretzels – awesome. I’d LOVE to go on a road trip with you!! :D
we have similar travel eats… I like to bring nut butters and string cheese, portable fruit (apple + banana) and I bring my protein powder and hand blender. wasabi peas are a GREAT road trip snack… have you tried the SRIRACHA PEAS?? Mmm…
have a great time!
Where do you get siracha peas from!? I must try them ASAP!!!
I usually find them at an Asian grocery store, but I think I saw them once in my local grocer – (fred meyer, depending where you live, similar to a kroger, do you have those?) look in the Asian section. :)
Oh my gosh.. COCK SAUCE PEAS?! MUST TRY.
haaa! let me know if you cannot find them… I can send some your way… :D
love the man-grilling action. BT made dinner for me last night and it was lovely. love that i’ve trained him well ;)
1. my last list: shopping list for my first homemade ice cream attempt! yum.
2. favorite on the road snacks: apples and almonds, trail mix, peanut butter on everything and ice cream on the road, not to pack of course. ;)
I made a Trader Joe’s shopping list today. I love lists so much, sometimes I put things on them, just to be able to check them off! My fav roadtrip snack would have to be almonds, but the flavored kind esp. the wasabi flavored ones! I think road trips are a blast-try listening to some stand up comedy on yours, it passes the time with lots of laughs. :)
Haha I do the same thing. Love checking things off! We for sure will be listening to some Doug Benson and Bill Burr.. maybe a little Tosh for good measure :)
I love lists! Right now I’m in the middle of packing up my house AND preparing to go overseas for a month, so I have a LOT of list action happening! My trip includes 3 diff places (2 countries) so I have multiple lists for each place (things to see, places to eat, etc)…it’s actually getting to be a little ridiculous!!
JEALOUS.
those blue yogurt pretzels are calling my name! i just got back from a road trip and my favorite part was stopping at kitschy restaurants…
last list i made: what to do after work
-buy hp7 part 1
-kickboxing class
-froyo
-buy ginger chews for my bff in portland
-watch hp7 part 1
-blog < < still haven't gotten to this one yet
fave road snacks: mustard pretzels, carrots + tahini, cheerios! (they will make a mess in the car though haha)
What a dinner! I want those potatoes. I’m a crazy list lady. The last lists I made were: 1. the list of items I needed from the grocery store and 2. the list of treats I left for Josh’s Mom at her new house for when she arrived today. Great car snacks. How good are yogurt covered pretzels. I OD’d on apple rings when I was younger…cause a very sick little belly and now I can’t eat them haha. I hate fast food too- we never/rarely stop for it. I always pack sandwiches, fruits & veggies, homemade bars, rice cakes + nut butter, pretzels, random other little treats
roasted seaweed is one of my favorite snacks in the car. that along with dehydrated fruits. :) my latest list is for a camping trip i’m going on this weekend!
last list: grocery list for Costco. It only lived in my head; not on paper.
I always take a few Honest Eats bars on a roadtrip (they are so, so, so good, especially the cran-lemon flavor). Ryan likes trail mix and a HUGE water.
I haven’t had any asparagus yet this summer — must get on that folic acid stat!!
& love that citrus kombucha — mmmm!!
last list?
the move I am doing….on Wednesday!
and the trip I just came home from today (Mexico City)
whirlwind.life.
your road food looks stellar. I kinda am craving blue pretzels now!
I made a list last night for my Ireland trip! I like to take rice cakes and peanut butter/tahini, apples, bars and water x x
have fun with the lists, j!
that photo of the puppies peering out the back of the car is too funny!
last list: grocery list
car food: protein bars, purchased, not homemade
have fun planning for your trip – yes, always lots to prep, but it’s exciting to anticipate getting away, too!
One of my favorite foods to take on the road is trail mix. I love to make my own before we head out and end up munching on it all throughout the trip. Have a great time wherever you guys are headed!!! Is this an anniversary trip?
Yes! We are driving to Tahoe for the ol’ 1 year :)
Im loving Marshall’s skills ; ) he is a good husband , you are a good wife too : )
I pack bars, dried fruit, fresh fruit, and some soy crisps for road trips! Oh and almond butter packs, the best!
Have a great day love! xoxo <3
Barely enough room for the pups!
This past weekend we took a short road trip, but I packed PB&J for the fiance’, tuna salad and red pepper strips for myself, and lots of fruit for dessert. A good cooler is essential!
I know, isn’t that photo so funny? It was packed in tight! Hopefully this trip will have more room since we won’t need our camping gear!
Phew that is one well-packed and neat car! Nice organization skills lady :) You packed pretty much every type of snack I bring with me. I always like to suck on pretzels, dried fruit is a must, granola bars of every kind, plenty to drink, GUM, cold veggies, fruit… all convenient and delicious choices.
The last list I made was for the grocery store… how exciting haha
Oh.. I haven’t even started packing for this trip yet. The one in that photo was last year.. and I was much more prepared than this time around!
Whoops my mistake! I obviously should have read a bit more carefully! :) You will get everything together though, I work better under pressure, perhaps you too!
i had to plan out our trip to dallas last weekend…i love planning for trips! i’m so weird about road food though. i only like sandwiches if they’re fresh made, and even then PB&J is usually the fave. But i DO love apples and dried fruit! hope you guys have fun, i’m jealous :)
Great snacks! Have fun on your road trip! :)
The last list I made was what we needed from the supermarket. My favorite road trip snacks are usually something crunchy, like pretzels, apples, or trail mix. :)
Definitely love bars, nuts/trail mix, overnight oats, fresh produce, and hard boiled eggs.
I make a daily to do list, because my type a personality likes that shiz.
My favorite road trip food = pretzels, apples &pb, sliced cucumbers, and pb& j!
dude! are those yogurt covered pretzels PURPLE?!!? or am I just color blind?
i make a “to do” list for myself every morning without fail. The funny thing is, I never look at it during the day. Nope, not once.
The last list I made was my weekly to-do list yesterday. It’s the first thing I do every Monday morning when I get to work!
I made a grocery list yesterday — and honestly each day I make tons of lists: what to do at work, what to do after work, groceries, errands, etc.
I love that Marshall made you dinner again — I need to find cooking classes around here for me and Jason for sure.
I love string cheese and peanut butter filled pretzels! Yum :). I love packing bars for the road- they are easy to pack and tasty!
I love road trips! I usually make a big bag of homemade trail mix, and I always love to bring kale chips to crunch on :)
I make lists for evvverything- I just made a to-do list for today, actually!
Have fun on your trip!
xo
For our upcoming trip to Tahoe. I too have multiple lists for our trip. I have a packing app on my iTouch and I still have lists that I write on my little notepad. I have lists for movies to bring, what to pack, what to cook while we are there, what to get at the grocery store before we leave (I’m lucky enough to live only 2 ours away!) since their stores are more expensive, what we want to do there, and where we want to eat out. We go pretty much every year so we have our traditions which include watching the Great Outdoors, bowling, the beach at least once or twice, pee-wee golfing, and there are a few more.
PB&J for sure! I love that picture of all your stuff with the dogs in the back of the car. So cute!
I made a baked pasta dish for easy dinners this week since it’s going to be crazy!
Hot tamales and salt and vinegar chips tend to be my fave road trip snacks. It’s just how I roll..
Has Marshall ever tried Kombucha for his Crohn’s? Lindsay (Cotter Crunch) told me about it & she said it’s recommended for people with stomach issues (inc. Crohn’s) I just started drinking it yesterday, and actually REALLY like it. I love the citrus flavor too :) & the trilogy!
Didn’t know if he maybe has tried it yet, or what he thought.
He haaaaates it! I know, I know, he’s crazy. Citrus is my fave flave! That and cosmic cranberry. Glad it helps you <3
I made a list yesterday just for stuff I needed at Target – it was ridiculously long…I had to force myself out of the home decor section. :)
I like to bring apples, dried fruit, nuts, beef jerky, bars and lots of water on road trips.
Target is so dangerous!
I just made a list about 3 minutes ago of food supplies I need to buy to succesfully throw my husband’s 30th birthday party on Saturday. Wish me luck, I get very overwhelmed trying to plan parties! And your 30th should be one heck of a party, so I’m trying to make it perfect!
Good luck with the party! I bet it will be a hit!
oh wow, great list! I actually like packing for road trips, cause you’re right, it does not have to be unhealthy!!
It’s like travelling with all your favorites right next to ya<—what could be better?!
I made a list of pros and cons last night. I was offered another job, but I don’t know if I can make the contract work for us. Sucky. It’s kind of a secret. I haven’t told anyone else except Dustin.
Have you tried Newman’s Own Protein Pretzels? They usually have them at Sunflower of WF. They taste just like normal pretzels, and no soy additives. Just the whole grains give them a lot more oomph than usual. I dig ’em. A pretzel, a dried apricot and an almond stacked together makes a tasty little combo. Have fun on your trip. It will be super exciting! xoxo
Have fun on your trip! You sound very organized :-)
The last list I wrote was for groceries. I love using the iPhone notes feature for all my lists so that way I never lose them and I can neatly delete an item once it’s done. So satisfying!
I am the list queen when we go on trips… Had to laugh when you said you could make a list of the lists you need. I am pretty sure I said those very same words before packing up for my SIL’s wedding weekend over the 4th.
Favorite road snack: bars, fruit, kale chips (that I didn’t make – ranch flavor!), dried fruit, turkey jerky & sandwiches.
You got nails again!? So did I… I can’t resist in the summer for some reason.
OH HELL NO I didn’t! Never, never, never again. I hate fake nails. That was from right before my wedding. I haven’t actually done any snack shopping for this particular road trip yet :)
Last list is the stuff I need to get done today! Cleaning ect.. not my favorite kind of list.
Just got back from a little road trip and my fave snack is spicy hot peanuts, lara bars, & lots & lots of H20.
lists make me happy, and keep me sane. :)
my last list was a “day by day” of this week with the major things i needed to accomplish. monday was a success!
have a blast on your trip!
I make lists on a daily basis it seems like. lol. Usually it is a to do list for the day but the last one I made was a grocery list! My favorite snack for the road is definitely trail mix! :)
That dinner last night looks amazing!! What a good guy :-)
I love your list of road trip snacks – what made me smile most was the pb&j! I need to rotate that one into my lunchtime options for work, nice and portable and YUMMMY! The last road trip we took involved a cooler full of apples/pb, chobani and other random summertime fruits – nectarines definitely made an appearance. Mmm.
My husband is addicted to lists. We are heading out on a weeklong vacation on Friday and he has a TWO PAGE lists of “must bring” items. It used to annoy me, but now I love it. I usually forget things like toothpaste, UNDERWEAR (yeah, sad I know), and certain favorite sandals/outfits… and he will have them all for me. Lifesaver!
I am list-makin’ fool. I use an app on my phone for mine though, otherwise i would probably go through a tree a day. A lot goes on in my mind, what can I say? Those all look like solid eating options, especially the pb pretzels! It’s been too long since I’ve had them. Too bad Trader Joes is at least 1485838 miles away from where I live. Have fun on your trip!
My Whole Foods has the pretzels! Is that bad or good…
ohhh I will have to look into that! Thank you!
The last list I made was my grocery shopping list yesterday…wait, no I lied I made a to-do list at work this morning…I am only organized by lists…otherwise I am a total failure ;)
My favorite road trip snack is the Wasabi Wow trail mix from TJ’s…it has dried fruit, peanuts, wasabi peas, and almonds…such a wonderful combo!
I must be still half asleep because I thought the title said “Road Head” at first and I was thinking “DAAAAAMN, I know J likes to share, but geeze!” ;)
I love making lists. I’m a list addict. I use TeuxDeux.com to track my ToDos, and I love it! I keep a list for personal stuff, work stuff, and blog stuff. We’re going on a road trip soon to Mammoth & Yosemite (one of our favorite & most frequent trips), and we love making Chex mix, although we end up eating so much that I can barely stand to look at it until the next trip! :P
Hahaha. You are my fave.
