insanity review: 5 weeks in.

as promised, i am going to check in and ramble a little bit about my journey with insanity so far. if you have no desire to read about my insanity challenge, scroll on down to the “meals” icon.

IMG_2753

i started the challenge on april 3rd.  it began with four weeks of workouts that were 6 days on/1 day off.  there were a total of five workouts i did for the first four weeks.

  • plyometric cardio circuit
  • cardio power & resistance
  • pure cardio
  • cardio abs
  • cardio recovery

each workout was around 40 minutes, aside from the cardio abs.. which was 16 minutes. that one was tacked on to the end of the pure cardio workout days.  five of the six days were super intense and one of the days (wednesdays) was really mellow and easy.. the cardio recovery DVD.

after the first four weeks, there was one week of recovery.  this week (which was last week for me) consisted of the same DVD for six days in a row.  it was called “core cardio and balance”.  don’t let the term “recovery week” fool you.. this workout was no joke.  some of you warned me that the recovery week was in fact still a tough workout, and you were right.  while it wasn’t very fast paced, it was incredibly challenging.  there was a lot of focus on strengthening my core and working on my ability to endure slow, steady movements for a long period of time. for example, for three and a half minutes straight, i had to sit in a deep plié squat and hold my arms out and do various shoulder movements like flutters and circles.  they don’t call this part “shoulder burners” for nothing!  while it was a really great workout for core strengthening, i got SO sick of it by the sixth day! it was just too much of the same thing over and over. i was happy to cross off the last day of the recovery week!

image

i started out with a fit test on day one.  the fit test consists of eight different moves. (i googled it and you can see the eight moves here.) you do each move for a solid minute and write down the number of reps you are able to complete during that minute.  the fit test is revisited every so often to check on progress.  so far, i have done the fit test three times. once at the beginning, once after 2 weeks and once on sunday.. after month one and after the recovery week—so five weeks in.

here are my results:

move start date 2 weeks in 5 weeks in
switch kicks 100 109 120
power jacks 44 50 56
power knees 85 107 108
power jumps 28 38 40
globe jumps 12 13 14
suicide jumps (burpees) 14 17 18
push up jacks 25 30 33
low plank oblique 50 60 64

i wasn’t sure how i would do on the fit test yesterday.. but i was pleasantly surprised to see that i improved on all the moves.  i guess there is something to this program, eh?

after the fit test yesterday, i still had to do day 1 of month number 2.  i decided it was in my best interest to bake a carrot cake beforehand and give myself a little rest, since the fit test is a workout in and of itself.

after a brief break, i got down to business and completed the max interval circuit.  it was an hour of heart pumping, high jumping insanity. no, really.. it was crazy.  never in my life have i moved so much and so fast and in so many ways in such a condensed amount of time. i even screamed out in exhaustion a few times. i think i scared the dogs.

the workout consisted of a 10 minute warmup (if you can call it that—it is like a mini workout!) followed by 5 minutes of stretching.  next up was a circuit of four different moves, each 45 seconds long with no rest.  after the 3 minute circuit, you do get a brief 30 second rest to bring your heart rate down and get some water. the circuit is then completed two more times, for a total of three times through.  at the end of the third set, there is one more additional move tacked onto the circuit block for good measure.

the workout then goes on to two more circuits with the same set up as the first: 4 moves, 45 seconds each without rest, a 30 second break, repeat the circuit twice more, then one more move tacked onto the third set.  after all the circuits are completed, there is a short cooldown stretch.

and then you die.

if i had to compare month 2 to month 1, i would call the month 1 workouts a piece of cake. no, really. they are challenging, but do-able.  while i worked really hard during the month 1 workouts, i never wanted to scream out in agony because i was so exhausted.  month 2 is no joke.

even though it was incredibly difficult, i did complete the whole workout.  granted, i was dead tired the rest of the night, but i did it.. and that is what matters.  i think the most important part of completing these intense workouts is to do them with the correct form.  it is easy to get caught up in the DVD and want to go at the same pace as the class on the TV, but it is important to remember to go at your own pace. always, always, always put form over reps.  if you rush through the circuit trying to get as many reps in as possible, you risk doing the move wrong and that can lead to injury.  i tried to focus on doing each move correctly so i could get the most out of the workout.

pretty sure that worked.. my whole body is sore today. my glutes and my shoulders are the most sore, followed by my inner thighs.  it’s such a good feeling.. what can i say? i love DOMS.

i did the second workout of month 2 today after work.  it was called max interval plyo.  it has basically the same set up as yesterday’s, but there was more jumping and squatting. that was great on my sore glutes. there were also a zillion more pushups. oh, and marshall and his friends came home in the middle of my workout so i had an audience. lovely.

today’s workout was slightly easier than yesterday’s.. maybe because i was prepared for the worst or maybe it just consisted of moves i am better at.  either way, i welcomed the fact that it was just slightly easier than the previous workout!

it’s definite that yesterday’s max interval circuit workout was, by far, the hardest workout of my entire life.

during month 1 and the recovery week, i did the majority of the workouts in the morning. as you know, i am NOT a morning workout person.. but was bound and determined to become one.  i completed all but 3 or 4 of the workouts in the morning before work.  i am not sure if i will be able to keep up the morning workouts during month 2.  it requires so much more energy and also 20 minutes more time-wise. i am going to try to do it tomorrow morning and see how it works out.  i hope i am able to do the workouts in the morning because i sure love having my evenings free.

i have had several requests for me to talk about insanity on a daily basis, but there really isn’t a whole lot to say from day to day. it’s a DVD workout series and it is somewhat repetitive.. so talking about it daily would be ultra boring to read. however, i do update my insanity page somewhat regularly.  it is a journal-style documentation of the challenge and it really is pretty dull, but you can go ahead and knock yourself out if you want!

i am actually going to try to be more disciplined in updating it daily for these last four weeks.  i also want to doclument more about how i feel.. so here’s hoping i can keep up with that.

insanity talk over! feel free to ask me questions if you want. i am no expert nor am i a trained professional.. but i can give you my opinion.

tonight’s dinner was real good.

IMG_2728

it was an adaption of heather’s balsamic chicken & peas with a few minor changes.

IMG_2712

here are the ingredients i used:

  • cooking spray
  • 12 oz boneless, skinless chicken breast cut into a/2” cubes
  • 1 whole red onion, diced small
  • 1 TB jarred minced garlic
  • 2 cups frozen peas, steamed
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 TB whole wheat flour
  • 1 TB dried thyme
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 cup skim milk
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 4 oz whole wheat wide noodles (the curly ones), prepared according to package
  • salt+ pepper to taste

i prepared the chicken and sauce using heather’s method, so you can head on over to her post and check out the how-to.

i didn’t have any gnocchi, so i used the pasta i had on hand and skipped the browning in butter part and just tossed the pasta with the chicken, sauce and peas.

IMG_2725

i started making this meal at 6:30.  i was done cooking, photographing and eating it at 7:15.  it was a super quick meal!

IMG_2721

i served it alongside asparagus. can’t go wrong with lots of green on a plate!

IMG_2720

marshall said it was a little pea-heavy for his liking.. but i didn’t think so at all. i love peas!  if you don’t like peas, you could easily leave them out or replace them with another veggie.

this recipe makes four servings, here are the stats per serving:

image

pretty remarkable! body for lifers, this one’s for you.

IMG_2718

thanks for the great meal idea, heather!

in other news.. it’s shedding season.

marshall just bought a wire brush and is in the garage de-furring the pups.  he started out in the kitchen..

IMG_2732

and after only a few strokes this is what we had on our hands.. er, what marshall had on his hands. quite literally.

IMG_2738

so he took it to the garage and is brushing away.

IMG_2741

i just checked on them and by the looks of this pile, i am certain we will be able to build another dog by the end of the night.

IMG_2745

good thing we have a nice vacuum. and a costco supply of lint rollers.

Qs~

1. what was the hardest workout of your life?

2. do you like peas?

xo. janetha g.

Heather May 9, 2011 at 7:39 pm

i’m so glad you guys liked it…even if it was a little pea-heavy :) i love peas, but have to watch the pea quantity for Nate too :)

Lee May 9, 2011 at 7:43 pm

You should get a furminator for the dogs. It really works!

janetha May 11, 2011 at 9:04 am

I have never heard of that but I am Googling it now! Thanks!

Allison @ Runs A Latte May 9, 2011 at 7:43 pm

I had a hell of a time with my first few BodyRock workouts, and this was when I felt strong and totally in shape. Other than that, miles 19-23 of a marathon kick my butt every time!!

I like peas when mixed with other things, but I wouldn’t just eat a bowl of them.

Amanda May 9, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Oh man shedding season looks intense. I want a pup so so bad. It’s not even funny. I could deal with the shedding if they were that cute.

I really want to try Insanity. I need a good hard workout in my life.

LauraJayne May 9, 2011 at 7:50 pm

2. I love peas. I started loving them in 2011, circa February. I used to be a lousy vegetarian until I started trying all of the vegetables I hated as a child.

1. My first Bikram Yoga class. I had to leave halfway through, and when I came back in, I just lied on the ground. No joke. Still can’t believe I went back.

julie May 9, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Four words for you: Long Haired German Shepherd. Plus two more: Australian Shepherd. We could stuff small couches during shedding season. Thanks for the recipe!

Bria May 9, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Hardest workout of my life was probably a race I ran in either track or cross-country in high school. Running for competition just hurts, what can I say?

A Yoga bootcamp comes in a close second. Dealing with your own body weight via planks, chaturangas, Yoga pushups, inversions, and heaven knows what else for over an hour is no joke.

Love the Insanity info. The recipe looks great, too. Bet you’re sleeping well with these workouts in your life!

Carbzilla May 9, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Nothing could be too pea-heavy for me! Love them!

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) May 9, 2011 at 8:35 pm

OK what’s so weird is that Randy looks positively bald. (As does Ellie) and then you go and brush a whole dog off him- amazeballs! Sam on the other hand looks like a furry monster, well because she IS one.

Wow- screaming in agony- sounds like a great workout to me. Not sure now what our schedule is for the weekend re. working out- I need to be reminded. The living room is big enough so we could all 3 do it! Hardest workout- I used to take a boot camp class when I spent a lot of time in Sarasota when my Dad was sick. I was the least fit person in the class and it was when I was the leanest. I felt about an inch big. Hated it actually because I felt so defeated (and it was a somewhat competitive class which I hate) Also I despise an audience when I’m working out at home – I would have told hubby to get lost! You’re way nicer than me!

Love peas, but wish they weren’t quite so carby. That dish looks delish though!

I love DOMS too, but I’ve heard that you’re supposed to take the following day off a body part if you’re sore- no?

can’t wait now only 4 days! :-D

janetha May 11, 2011 at 9:11 am

Luckily you get a break after 3 workouts and again after 2 more–so 2 breaks a week. I think my body will be less sore next week, it is just not used to these new moves! It is more of an all-over sore rather than a sore-from-lifting sore.. so I think it’s ok to keep jumping around. Although your comment alarmed Momma B and she called me to make sure I was OK :)

I cannnot waaaaiitttt to meet the kitties.

Salah May 9, 2011 at 8:43 pm

I love insanity….definitely one of my all time favorite workout series! It totally kicks bootay!

Abby May 9, 2011 at 8:44 pm

I think the hardest workout of my life was running a half marathon. I love peas–hot and cold! :)

Ashley May 9, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Yipes!! That sounds intense to say the least!

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife May 9, 2011 at 9:04 pm

doing the BodyPUMP instructor training and certification was INSANE. So hard. 8 hours for 3 days straight. thought.i.was.gonna.die. But SO worth it!

Love the DOMS feeling. And quick dinners–great post :)

Mama Pea May 9, 2011 at 9:08 pm

I’m stalking your comments so I can go leave nasty anonymous comments on the blogs of people who say they don’t like peas.

Sarah May 9, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Best comment ever.

janetha May 11, 2011 at 9:09 am

Best comment ever, no doubt.

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) May 9, 2011 at 9:09 pm

peas and asparagus…i have a sudden craving for them. great shots, they are calling my name!

insanity. thanks for the detailed!! review and info. about a year ago when insanity and p90x were all the rage on tons and tons of blogs, i almost bought it and went for it, but didnt. I have heard that they are THE hardest workouts, period. From women who TRULY know how to work out (As you you) and arent afraid of sweating and pretty much pushing yourself to the max…very good info that you feel it’s the hardest workout out of your life. Makes me want to buy it now! ha! i love a supreme challenge!

Cindy May 9, 2011 at 9:16 pm

mmmm, i love peas! especially the fresh ones, right out of the pod. so sweet and yummy.

the hardest workout i ever recall doing was when i was first starting bootcamp three years ago after not really working out regularly…and we were doing scotch miles up a hill (where you run in single file and the person in back has to sprint to the front of the line)…i seriously almost passed out and only through sheer will and stubborness did i make it to the top. that was rough!

momma b May 9, 2011 at 9:28 pm

Yes do you need to take a day off (just read Deb’s comment) I give you permission just in case :)

I don’t think I’ve had my hardest workout yet I’m thinking it may happen some time in July …want to join me.?!

No to peas… well except for mama pea!

xoxo

Meg May 9, 2011 at 9:28 pm

Just the other night, I was making myself peas for dinner (I didn’t have much of an appetite) and thinking about how much I like them and how they are underrated. Yay for peas!

Oh, and I COMPLETELY get the whole shedding season thing. We have one of those “furminator” brushes and it’s ridiculous how much they shed! Despite all that shedding, we sure do love our sweet golden retriever!

Tea-bag May 9, 2011 at 9:42 pm

Hardest workout – probably in high school during cross country when we did hill sprints in the sand dunes during the summer … & I lived near palm springs (so very hot!) most of us puked!
Peas – I can take em or leave em but I adore asparagus – much to the chagrin of anyone going to the bathroom after me!

Ellie May 9, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Janetha, I love how your workouts and preferences are usually somewhat similar to mine. :D HIIT with bodyweight and weights is definitely the toughest! but fun-nest!

edenseats May 9, 2011 at 10:27 pm

Holy Peas woman! you ARE gonna be ripped and I will look like a flabbster next to you in PS! Insanity is scaring me but I’m curious to try. I’ll finish up my will before doing so though.

three days!!!!

Sara @ Nourish and Flourish May 9, 2011 at 11:01 pm

Janetha, you’ve definitely piqued my interest in Insanity! I just wish I could give it a test run without buying the entire set!

Hardest workout: high school cross-country training in 110-degree heat! Our coach would make us run hill sprints, followed by a long run. I threw up a few times, literally!

Love tonight’s dinner! Peas are a definite YAY. :-)

janetha May 11, 2011 at 9:09 am

I bet they have the workouts on YouTube! You should check.

Katie May 10, 2011 at 12:55 am

I’ve screamed (and cried!) in agony doing crossfit workouts before. I kind of hate that feeling – good for you for sticking with it for 2 months!

Also, Punky is shedding like that lately, too…those wire brushes are a lifesaver.

MelissaNibbles May 10, 2011 at 1:51 am

Glad you’ve found a workout you like so much. It’s a tough one! You’re a rockstar girl!

1970kikiproject May 10, 2011 at 2:55 am

thanks for the insanity review, j! so proud of you for how you improved your #s over the five weeks. you’re getting the results – the hard work is paying off!
always have disliked peas intensely (sorry, mama pea) – except raw, out of the pod. those are awesome – it’s cooked peas that are ick.
hardest i’ve worked is in a running race. and not always the longest races (marathon, for example): if you want to go fast in a 10k, it’s going to hurt!!!
can’t wait for local fresh asparagus – it’s almost that season!!!

The Sometimes Healthy Girl May 10, 2011 at 3:23 am

Wow that insanity workout looks intense! The problem for me with circuit workouts is that sometimes it’s a little hard for me to motivate myself to push my absolute hardest. I’d love to try Insanity but I’d have to be sure to push myself!

I’m a pea lova – that dinner looks delicious

VeggieGirl May 10, 2011 at 3:43 am

Shedding season, haha :D

1.) Kickboxing bootcamp

2.) Not really.

lindsay May 10, 2011 at 3:46 am

Heathers dishes are always amazing! and um, yes…I NEED THAT BRUSH! Shedding season is here and my pups has furball babies EVERYWHERE!

Lauren May 10, 2011 at 3:57 am

I LOVED the Insanity workouts. I didn’t exactly follow the entire program like you are but more or less used the workouts as supplements. They are INTENSE for sure!!!! I actually want to start doing them again. Great job on this girl. I know exactly what you mean on how the second month is noticeably easier.

janetha May 11, 2011 at 8:45 am

wait… you think the second month is EASIER?!

Erica May 10, 2011 at 4:09 am

Insanity sounds awesome. I am so thinking about doing this after the baby is born. Fantastic. I know I’ll want to cry halfway through- but it will so be worth it! Lets see if I can balance it some how with teaching!! What a yummy dinner. Creamy & delicious. Ohhh shedding season- makes me grateful Frank has short hair…even though its still EVERYWHERE.

1. what was the hardest workout of your life? Body Attack training

2. do you like peas? LOVE them. I used to hate them as a kid

lifeisbeachykeen May 10, 2011 at 4:17 am

Thanks for your Insanity review. I am doing Insanity as well, but I’m not following it quite as closely. I took Sat/Sun rest day. I borrowed it from my sister, and one of the DVDs doesn’t work, so I had to substitute that. They are definitely the hardest work outs I’ve ever done.

Sarah@The Flying ONION May 10, 2011 at 4:19 am

Haha…love the shedding pictures. They remind me of the german shepherd that my family had growing up. People used to use his hair for their gardens, in order to keep the deer away…haha. :D

Pure2raw twins May 10, 2011 at 4:51 am

oh man I could never workout like that in front of others, haha, I scream and yell too much

I think you are doing great with Insanity!! Month two was really hard for us, but we just took one day at a time.

Marlow May 10, 2011 at 4:56 am

I have to get one of those brushes!!

coffeeandthepaper May 10, 2011 at 5:16 am

Woo, look at you go girl! It sounds pretty challenging, but you took it on and did so great!

withasideofhope May 10, 2011 at 5:19 am

The insanity workouts sound intense. I’d be interested to try them. I really need to do something to get into shape.

Your dinner looks great! I think peas are alright in moderation. I’m not a huge fan of them.

Jessica May 10, 2011 at 5:30 am

I know this is a crazy question but where did you buy that de-shedding brush? Would you recommend it? My two cats shed like crazy but especially now that it is shedding season for them too. I need something to get that undercoat that sheds so bad.

janetha May 11, 2011 at 9:08 am
Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli May 10, 2011 at 5:46 am

I used to go to a cross-fit gym…I had a lot of “hardest workouts of my lfe” there! Between tire flips, kettle bell swings, and burpess, my workouts were an hour long SWEAT sesh! Heavy on the SWEAT!! But I LOVED it! Although I no longer go to that gym, I still incorporate a lot of moves into my workouts that I do at home. I love functional training!

LOVE peas! And I just realized that I have all the ingredients to make this dish! Yay!!

Lisa (I'm an Okie) May 10, 2011 at 5:53 am

I have a furminator and it gets a ton of hair off of Eddie. Shockingly a lot. What kind of brush is that?! I’ve never seen one!

janetha May 11, 2011 at 9:08 am

It’s a metal comb/brush thing and works suuuper well. ALthough I want to look into this Furminator thingamajig. Oh, looks like it is called a “shedding blade” : http://www.petco.com/product/115379/ConairPro-Pet-Shedding-Blade.aspx

Holly May 10, 2011 at 6:01 am

Wow — that dog hair pile is hilarious!

Thanks for the Insanity review — I’ve heard it is tough. I’ve gotten other exercise programs like that before and I end up getting so bored — I start to know the routine (and dread certain parts).

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine May 10, 2011 at 6:04 am

I bought Insanity last year, but had to stop pretty soon after because it’s REALLY hard on my knees. Boo. My sister in law uses it now though!

Errign May 10, 2011 at 6:39 am

McKinley sheds like a mo-fo. I get his hair cut so often because of that, and because I am lazy with brushing his silly double coat. Hopefully this post will inspire me to brush him this afternoon.

insanity sounds like, well, insanity. The hardest workout of my life..um, I don’t know if I’ve ever really had that moment. Skiing in powder is always brutal on my legs, but it’s not the hardest thing ever. I’ve had parts of workouts that were terrible, like hill climbs on my mountain bike etc.

I love peas, but I love frozen corn more, I think :) Pasta with protein and frozen veg is a go-to meal for me!

Katy May 10, 2011 at 6:47 am

Amazing!! I’m so glad you did the first fit test because I’ve found it’s really easy to get frustrated with the Beachbody programs…seeing the difference in how much you can do is an incredible rush.

I love DOMS, too.

Gillian May 10, 2011 at 7:12 am

I’m so impressed with how organized you are with workouts and meals!!

Hardest workout of my life was probably a hike I went on with my dad (who’s in his 60s!) It was meant to be an easy 2 hour hike but we ended up climbing a frickin mountain for 6 hours!! He kept saying he was going to have a heart attack and scaring the crap out of me!

Michelle May 10, 2011 at 7:18 am

Hardest workout of my life was easily running a marathon. That took so much mental willpower to tough it out. But I did it! Good for you for sticking with the Insanity challenge. You’ve made remarkable strides :-) Thanks for sharing your progress.

LOVE peas. They are one of my favorite vegetables but I don’t eat them nearly enough.

Kristen May 10, 2011 at 7:32 am

I love hearing about your Insanity workout progress. It’s very impressive and makes me want to check it out. I have P90X at my house, but haven’t given it a go yet. I may check it out to steal bits of it for my own workout. You’ve inspired me!

Also, that meal looks GREAT! I’m not a pea lover or hater, but I think I may exchange them for some asparagus. NOMZ!

You should put that fur in your backyard for the birds to use in their nests. :)

Max Interval Circuit is THE hardest but it’s amazing! When you’re finished get Insanity: The Asylum. I’m doing it now and I actually feel tears welling up in my eyes when I’m finished it’s so difficult. Pros: The warm up changes everytime so none of the repetitive crap from Insanity and it’s always changing so you’re never bored Cons: Only 6 Workouts and you have to use equipment. It comes with the workout but i still hate having to use other things.

janetha May 11, 2011 at 9:05 am

Oh man.. thanks for the info on the Asylum! I may have to try it!

Emily May 10, 2011 at 7:34 am

I love your blog! Have you lost weight since you’ve given up sugar?

janetha May 10, 2011 at 9:20 am

Thanks, Emily! I don’t weigh myself.. so I don’t know. I feel better, look better and have zero craving for sweets. Oh, and no more headaches. That’s all I care about!

natalie (the sweets life) May 10, 2011 at 7:57 am

I agree with you–the month 2 insanity dvds are a little insane! I actually do the “warm-up” on lifting days just to get a quick 10 minutes of cardio in! :) Love the challenge though, even though I’m not doing the full 2 month thing like you!

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather May 10, 2011 at 8:02 am

That dinner looks so good! I love peas but Jacob hates them so I rarely cook with them :(

Those 2 workouts sound freakin awesome, haha. So funny that you had an audience. I’m sure they loved the sweat.
