i don’t think i have mentioned it, but i got an iPhone right before leaving for chicago.
i had been waiting for verizon to come out with an iPhone for forever and a day. marshall had one and i always loved messing around with it. plus, i hated my droid. like.. hated. it always died, the keyboard was terrible and it was clunky.
i have been loving this phone! there are so many things to use it for. one of the reasons i wanted an iPhone was so i could take screen shots. (speaking of screen shots, has anyone looked at the website damnyouautocorrect.com? it’s a must.)
coincidentally, i had a text conversation today that is ideal for a screen shot share here on the blog. and it’s hilarious. this is from my co-worker, ken. to give you an idea about ken.. he is from wisconsin, has been a salesman for the greater part of his life and is probably 130 lbs soaking wet. he also regularly pesters me.. as in, comes into my office and clips his toenails. not kidding. although he is a tad annoying at times, i really like ken a lot and he’s super funny. my blog is no secret around the office and i catch a lot of flack for photographing all my food. anyway, check it out.

so there you go. a sandwich that would be “great for my bloggers”.. hahah. noted.
anyway, in addition to screen shots, the iPhone is abundant in various apps. there really is an app for everything. i created a little meals & moves app/icon thing that leads directly to my blog from the home screen. isn’t it cute? i know. love the little plate and barbell.
i have been downloading different apps like a mad woman. some of my favorites are:
- list (who doesn’t love lists?! this lets you make lists within lists and cross things off. oh man, if you are list obsessed like me, you’d love this one.)
- peggle (addicting game that has kept me up until 1 AM multiple nights)
- words with friends (aka scrabble.. addicted.. and i am even playing with some of you guys!)
- the moron test (it’s harder than you think)
the app i want to talk about is one i read about in the latest issue of shape magazine.
fooducate! this is an app that lets you scan any food product that has a bar code and it gives you calorie count, a letter rating (between A and F) and tells you the good and bad things about the food as well as better alternatives.
marshall and i both downloaded the app and have been scanning fools. pretty sure we scanned the whole kitchen the other day…
“dad, what the heck are you doing?!”
“just scanning the salsa, penny, no big deal.”

it was fun to scan things. i noticed that some foods i deem healthy got less than stellar grades. i am not sure how the app decides what food gets what grade, but it is fun to scan everything, even if i don’t pay much attention to the letter grade. i think that’s the little girl in me who always wanted to be a grocery store checker.
speaking of grocery stores.. i used my new iPhone to take a photo of this mondo sweet potato at target the other day!
flipping huge. i didn’t buy this particular one, but i did buy a couple long sweet potatoes to make fries for tonight’s dinner.
mediterranean feta burgers + sweet potato & parsnip fries.
for the fries, i simply peeled and chopped the sweet potatoes and parsnips, sprayed them with cooking spray, seasoned them with TJs 21 seasoning salute and then roasted them for about 40 minutes (turning halfway through).
for the burgers, i combined 1 lb 96% lean, organic, grass-fed beef with a heaping tablespoon of minced garlic, ~1/4 cup fat free feta, salt and pepper.
after mixing the ingredients together, i formed four 1/4 lb balls and then pressed each ball between foil. i salt & peppered each patty again once it was pressed.
it was on the warmer side tonight, so we used the grill for the first time this year!
while marshall grilled the burgers, i got the condiments ready. lettuce, tomato, cucumber, homemade hummus and one of my favorite TJ’s products: green olive tapenade.
here’s a story: i did my grocery shopping at whole foods over the weekend and they were TOTALLY OUT of hamburger buns. what?? so strange. i had to buy these sandwich thin knock offs.. i was skeptical because i haven’t really liked sandwich thins in the past, but this was all they had at the store.
on the upside, they are ideal for burgers AND for feeding the little league…
i let my skeptical attitude go and gave these flat buns a chance. and guess what? i liked them. i think my big hangup with sandwich thins is they are a crappy replacement for bread and i was using them in place of actual bread. nothing can replace a delicious slice of thick bread.. but if we are talking about a vehicle for a burger, these work great! they taste good and they get the job done. maybe i am coming around.
anyway, i fixed my bun up with hummus on one side and tapenade on the other..
then layered on the veggies..
and topped it off with the perfectly grilled garlic feta burger.
this was SUCH a good dinner! sometimes you just need a burger. i loved the mediterranean twist on this one.
well, i would love to stay and chat, but i have 7 turns on words with friends.
clearly we know where my priorities lie. man, i love technology.

1. how old were you when you got your first cell phone? i was 16. it was a big ol’ nokia brick of a phone. i remember i was so excited because i could play snake during class. nowadays, you can probably purchase a snake from the pet store using your cell phone.
2. do you have a smart phone? how about a land line? it seems like land lines are a thing of the past.. pretty sure the only land line i call (aside from work) is my parents’. it’s crazy how much people rely on their cell phones—especially smart phones. you can do everything on them! technology is a trip.

Ok, a few things….
1) I need your cell number, so at least our iphones can have virtual playdates and maybe one day I’ll grow a pair of balls and actually used that face time feature (if we ever do that lets do after 10 am. mkay?).
2) I’ve been wanting to do an iphone post since I got it (like you, I had verizon and was anxiously waiting for the iphone to come out). But I was afraid I’d start an iphone blogger “clique”. Its weird but I feel there are “blackberry” people, “droid” people, and “iphone” people. weird, but I love my iphone!
3) Peggle ruined my social life
4) I had my first phone when I was 13. I think your three years older than me so it must have been around the time you got your brick. My mom just died and my dad didn’t want me not to have a cell, so he gave me my mom’s brick. But my sister (who 15 years older than me) had a PAGER! remember those!

I’m getting an iphone in April and am pretty excited about it!! Glad you’re loving yours. The sandwich cracks me up. People put salt and pepper on sandwiches? Hilarious. LOVE parsnip fries- its been so long since I had them- need to buy one tomorrow. I got my first cell phone when I turned 16 and was starting to drive. It was for emergencies only! My iphone will be my first smart phone and we haven’t had a land line years!
OMG, I think I’ve fallen in love with my iPhone…I resisted getting one forever because it was expensive but now I can’t imagine not having it! It’s permanently in my left hand. I’m crazy addicted…OK, I’m off to go download the lists and the UPC code app!!!

ha! I also had a Nokia brick at 16, because that’s when I got my license and first car. Now I have a Droid Incredible, which I love. We have a landline too now, but that’s only because it was actually a $14 savings per month over to have the phone on top of cable and internet rather than having just those two. Weird, but useful now that I’m unemployed and can’t use a work phone during the day!

I don’t have an iphone. I have tmobiles version of the blackberry because I like the keyboard for texting. I don’t ever want to be that plugged in, always using my phone. We got by just fine without all this technology before. I think as a society, we’re living in a digital world and less in the real world and it’s sad. I have friends that I refuse to go out to dinner with because they won’t stop looking at their phones. It’s terrible.

First cell phones: No landline for me now for years but before that it took me forever to finally give in and get a cell phone. I just hated the idea of having to be “on call”. Now I”m addicted though I still don’t know how to even text…my phone is so old it doesn’t.

That is the biggest sweet potato I have ever seen! I can’t even remember when I got a cell phone. I think I was in middle school. It was one of those pay as you go phones.
I have a droid smartphone. I can’t wait for my phone upgrade because this thing is so slow! I do have a landline. It was part of a triple play package from our cable provider.

I was 18 and in college. So old! I had a pager when I was 16 though…which really served absolutely no purpose.
I have a land line and a smart phone. All of my accounts are tied to the land line with my cell as the backup.
I was 16 too, but n0w my little sister’s like 7 year old friends have them!
I haven’t tried pebble, but bubblepopper has caused me to stay up late — so addicting!
we had a family cell phone for awhile, a giant nokia one as well. that was when i was first driving, then about when i was 17 maybe or 18 i can’t remember, i got my very own cell phone, just a little flip one. Now i’ve moved up to a Blackberry, and i love it. i’m not a fan of the touchscreens so i’m not sure if i would like an iPhone when we get them here. We still have a landline as well but it is kind of useless.. it is used occasionally still to talk to our parents, and for telemarketers to call.
Gah…so jealous! I want a smart phone :)

I would love that app when I was little I always WANTED a cash register. Pretty sure everytime grandma gave me the jcpenney book to circle what i wanted for christmas I circled one everytime.

my contract is up in june and i think i might take the iPhone plunge then as well. it’s just relevant now that i’m actually living in a city, super helpful! that is the biggest sweet potato i’ve ever seen! parsnips taste amazing when you toss them in a tahini/curry sauce nom. i got my first cell phone when i was 18, i borrowed my moms when i took the car out when i was 16/17 just in case of an accident or emergency but they didn’t want me to have one of my own until i graduated from high school so i would stay focused haha. no land line here! i don’t own a smart phone and feel like the last person on the planet without one but i don’t want to break my contract yet!

I want a smart phone so bad! There have been so many times when I would go to class to find out it was cancelled and there was an e-mail sent out which I didn’t check on my computer that morning. I would want it sent to my phone.

My husband and I actually gave our cell phones up about 7 years ago. We only have a land line. We’re weirdos, I know. I’ve had too many interactions with people in person where they’re talking to me, but checking their texts, playing games, etc. while trying to hold a conversation. It just rubs me the wrong way. I’m sure one day we’ll get one, but for now, I love not being tied to it.
no land line for us..we just use our cell phones…I have even let my kids help me with my greeting so it is like a home phone..

Those sandwich thins are also really good for a personal pizza…we use them all the time since my middle son eats nothing but pizza. I make my own sauce with a can of tomato sauce and some spices..yum

i held out on getting a cell phone until i was about 18. i didn’t think they were necessary…i was wrong, obvi. mine was a nokia brick as well, but i don’t remember it having games…
i have a smart phone, the old iphone 3g and i hate it. it’s slow and terrible. my bf is going to give me his old droid. he actually has a land line and i made fun of him for it…he has it cause he’s old. (not really, he’s only 32, but still, it’s funny)

I don’t have a smart phone, though. I actually just started texting only a few months ago. I’m behind the times at 26 years old. But honestly, I just can’t bring myself to pay and addition $30/month for something I may use on occasion. I spend most of my time on the Internet at work or at home on my computer, so I just don’t see the value for my life. But my fiance just got the R2D2 droid and I have to admit that they are pretty amazing! He used an app on me that took my heart rate!! Even though I was nervous his phone was taking my HR, I still pulled a 53 – sweet!
That is so funny about the ‘words with friends’ app- Craig is OBSESSED with it. Well, I should say he WAS obsessed until his phone kept freezing up & restarting all of the time.
He actually has a droid too- but the all touch screen one- I know you mentioned something about yours always dying- did it restart all of the time too?? He gets SO annoyed with it! He even went into Verizon on Wednesday to see if they could fix it..so they wiped out EVERYTHING- it was like getting a brand new phone with just your contacts…but it was actually WORSE! It restarted about 3 times in about 10 minutes & that was with ZERO apps on it. I can see a new phone in his future ;)
I really want the iphone for that scanning app- that is awesome!! I would be the same way- like a little kid- just scanning everything! haha :D
