hello and happy saturday to you!
i have enjoyed hearing everyone chime in on what their pet peeves are and why you are looking forward to fall. it is also comforting to know that several of you remember (and loved!) zoobilee zoo! looking back, the show was just a tad creepy, no?
last night, marshall and i decided to try out a semi-new (and brand new to us) burger joint in our town.
i had heard great things about salt city burgers!
i started out with an iced tea:
the way it works: you pick your kind of burger~
pick your optional toppings (for an additional charge)~
or, you can opt to order one of their “specialty burgers” such as southwest, bleu cheese bacon, etc. marshall ordered the bleu cheese burger, i ordered the turkey burger with avocado & mushrooms.
the additional charge for the avocado & mushrooms was totally worth it.. they really piled it on!
we split a basket of fries: half sweet potato & half regular.
of course, i focused mainly on the sweet potato side ;)
they had a “free toppings bar” that had lettuce, pickles, onions, etc.
i piled my burger with romaine, pickles & tomatoes.. and a healthy dose of ketchup & mustard.
this thing was giant!
i managed to conquer half the burger and then ate the other half’s avocado and mushrooms with a fork.
salt city burger co. had a large selection of hand scooped ice cream shakes, but i just couldn’t do it. i was stuffed!
i went home and after a bit of digesting (and FIVE episodes of true blood…) i was finally in the mood for dessert.
after having vanilla bean ice cream & grilled peaches on monday, a chocolate creamie on tuesday, newman Os & milk on wednesday and brownies & vanilla bean ice cream on thursday.. i decided i should probably quit with the full on desserts and opted for a healthier treat.
i made myself some cookies & cream protein ice cream.
ingredients:
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 1/4 cup whole (cow’s) milk
- 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
- 2 TB nestle quik
- 1/4 heaping tsp xanthan gum
- 1/4 heaping tsp guar gum
- 2 cups ice
- 1 newman O cookie
i blended the first 7 ingredients in my vitamix. protein ice cream is a bit labor intensive but well worth the effort! i sprinkled the top with the newman O cookie.
hit the spot!
i then proceeded to stay up until 2 AM watching true blood. and then i had dreams about vampires and werewolves.
Qs~
1. how do you like your burger? i almost always go for a turkey burger but occasionally do beef. the toppings above are what go onto my ideal burger!
2. favorite kind of ice cream? it may sound plain jane(tha), but i love vanilla bean!

Oh I love that place plus its not far from my house!!!
Yum! I love a good burger!!
I really love a good turkey, bison or beef burger! And really, I love all kinds of toppings – not always together, though! I love sauteed mushrooms and onions, or just cheese with ketchup and mustard… sometimes I love hummus on my burgers, too!
I love burgers and those fries look so delicious!! I like mine with cheese, pickles, lettuce, and lots of K & M.
Your burger looks amazing! i love my Dad’s beef burgers! too good! hah, i like it with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickes, Ketchup & Mustard = all american style hah. (even though i know i would love it with your toppings as well!)
favorite icecream = PB softserve
:)
i went to a steakhouse/ burger joint last night too! though i don’t eat much red meat so i got a fabulous snapper in a buttery cream sauce. yum!
i’m all about the turkey burgers with ketchup or cheddar cheese. otherwise, i’m not much of a burger girl. read: wimpy.
as for ice cream i love dulce de leche and butter pecan. and super inventive flavors at fun local ice cream places. mmmmm. but i am totally intrigued by your healthified ice cream creations. i’m rather lazy and just buy it by the pint, but you’ve inspired me to try to make that!
I like a good ole beef burger…with the works – cheddar, onion, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and pickles yum! fav spot in philly for a burger is village whiskey — if you ever visit you MUST go there and get one — with duck fat frites…the combo is life changing hehe.
My all-time favorite ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip, but I am also a huge fan of plain old chocolate!
Quick question for ya Janetha, if you have a sec… I notice you generally use Xanthan gum AND Guar gum. My understanding of the two is they are very similar chemically, with the chemical make up of the Xanthan gum being simpler (and easier to digest). When would you use one over the other, or what led you to using both?
Ive been reading so many recipes that call for these two gums, and cant seem to find them easily locally, so I was going to just order them online, but I thought I should probably have a better understanding of the whenss where’s and why’s first
Thanks!
stealing some thunder here but i only use xanthan. i tried using guar but it did NOT agree with me. i had some GI issues and it’s a gut irritant so if you’re prone to or have any food allergies i’d skip on the guar gum.
refer to deb’s post: http://smoothiegirleatstoo.blogspot.com/2009/11/why-i-use-xanthan-and-guar-gums-in-my.html
the guar gum makes it creamy and the xanthan gum makes it thick.
i like turkey burgers but i prefer bison! i had one last night and it was so tasty, good quality beef with W sauce and shallots is so tasty. toppers: caramelized onions/shrooms, a thick slice of tomato and mustard for me!
What a cool burger joint. My favorite burger is black bean topped with avocado and salsa. Fabulous. I would have been all over those sweet tater fries too. Looks like a fun night out. My favorite ice cream is either vanilla or mint chip
I’m not a fat of real burgers either. Like for real, even when I was little ;) I’m just a ketchup, pickles and mustard girl. The occasional tomato and onion nowdays.
Chocolate for me!
I don’t eat burgers but ice cream that I eat, mint choc chip all the way or pistachio. Tru blood! I’m longing for the new series to come out over here I am addicted I love Eric!!!!!!! x x
i really do love a good ol’ beefy burger sometimes, and i love veggie burgers with HUMMUS.
I love love love trying out new burger joints. Dan loves it more! I like turkey burgers but I tend to opt for the beef with some sort of bleu cheese business. Marshall’s looks bomb!
Ice cream….hmmmm…cookie dough or coffee :)
Happy saturday love!
Well, I’m a veggie burger gal and I like either spinach, roasted red bell peppers with provolone or I like it with lettuce, tomato, & jalapenos. Ice cream – something with nuts and caramel. No chocolate please.
Looks like an awesome burger place! I LOVE sweet potato fries (but I’m trying to eat more raw veggies right now to make up for the “overindulging”… must remember that!).
Favorite burger toppings? Grilled onions & sauteed mushrooms. Or, lettuce, tomatoes, & cucumbers.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
I cant believe america has so many excellent places for eating, it baffles me!
I need to move there, like stat!
I’d go with a chicken burger, totally dominated by salad toppings!
Ice-cream, hmmm, it’s not warm enough to start making the soft serves I’m seein around the blogging world but I’d have to say I’m excited.
My favorite indulgence ice-cream would have to be mint with chocolate chips!
I absolutely LOVE turkey burgers, whenever I can order one I do. Have you ever had a turkey burger at Cheesecake Factory?? I know they are know for unhealthy food, but their burgers are amazing and you should totally try one when you get the chance!! :)
My fave burgers are either bison or lamb, though I often choose turkey because it’s a tad healthier :)
I love mushrooms, caramelized onions, goat/feta cheese and avocado as toppings!
I love vanilla bean ice cream too, always hits the spot! But my alltime fave is chocolate chip cookie dough!
xo
Kris
A turkey burger with avocado and tomatoes really does it for me!
Plain chocolate ice cream!
Looks like a great dinner.
I love avocado on a [veggie] burger. And I’m with you, vanilla is my favorite.
