case of the mondays.

by Janetha on April 19, 2010

in meals,moves

you know, mondays usually are not that bad in my book.  i am not someone who loathes mondays or grumbles every time one comes around. but there is, every once in awhile, a monday that makes me ornery. today was one of those mondays.

it is safe to say i am a happy person. optimistic and smiling 90% of the time.. so i am not about to type up a downer post! i am just going to tell you about my day and then go relax :)

meals

i started the day the same way every monday starts.. at the original pancake house for my sales meeting.

meal 1: oatmeal & eggbeaters @ 8:30 AM

swimming in a pool of sugar free syrup and dusted with ridiculous amounts of cinnamon. i wouldn’t have it any other way.

IMG_0319

eggbeaters are boring. protein packed, for sure, but boring.
IMG_0317

work work work, drama drama drama.

meal 2: salad @ 12:00 noon

IMG_0320

sorta boring:

  • romaine
  • one hard boiled egg
  • 2 oz columbus low sodium herbed turkey breast
  • sprouts
  • bell peppers
  • cucumbers
  • dressing (1 TB sabra hummus+1 TB beaver hot & sweet mustard + water to thin)

IMG_0321

work, work, work. drama, drama.

drank a kombucha. (original flavor)

randy was at the vet all day. he had to get his teeth cleaned. the vet called me a few times letting me know more things randy needed done.. and the tab kept getting larger and larger.

stressful.

meal 3: luna bar @ 3 PM.

IMG_0325

favorite flavor.

i was on my way to the vet, where i met marshall & penny.. penny had to get her shots today, too.

the tab got larger and larger.

stressful.

they weighed my little big girl. 29 pounds. they said she could lose a few pounds.. so now penny is starting body for life.

 IMG_0336

i have a sweet story.

penelope and randy are never apart. they go everywhere and do everything together.

today, randy had to go to the vet to get his teeth cleaned, like i mentioned before, and penny was left alone all day long. well, for about six hours.

it was the end of the world.

she was SAD. she was pouting in the vet’s office while we waited:

IMG_0339

she waited patiently for her brother to come back and hang out with her. but she was sad. and a little scared. she was shaking.

IMG_0328

“was that randy’s collar shaking i heard in the hallway, mom?”

IMG_0331

no.. sorry penny. it was just the doctor. sorry, it is time to get your shots.

“SHOTS?!”

IMG_0343

she sure is cute when she is nervous.

IMG_0341

see her little tail between her legs? poor bean.

IMG_0344

she was very good for the doctor! she didn’t even cry :) but she still missed randy.

mom..WHERE IS RANDY?”

IMG_0345

marshall left the room.. to go get randy.

penny waited at the door, hoping for the best.

 IMG_0347

randy better be coming in here soon.”

IMG_0348

she was serious.

“YAY! randy dog!”

IMG_0350

it was SO funny how penny perked up completely once randy was in the room. i mean, with a face like this, who wouldn’t perk up?!

IMG_0356

“YAY! treats!”

IMG_0349

clean teeth and all :)

IMG_0353

let’s not talk about the fact that the vet bill was almost $800 today, okay? okay.

after the vet appointment, we went over to the house to try to get a video of the “before” to show you guys and to have for ourselves.. well~ we were foiled.. my brother was already working on laying the tile and we couldn’t walk through the house!

shucks.

that was the second time we were foiled. my mom and i tried to do this last night but my camera card was full and i stepped on a nail and i was bleeding and it just was not in the cards.

so maybe you’ll see a video of the house someday.. just not today. or tomorrow. and probably not the next day.

i went to the gym.

moves

cardio day.

i did four tens.

  • 10 min elliptical intervals @ level 10 resistance ranging from 7 MPH-9 MPH
  • 10 min treadmill intervals on 1 degree incline ranging from 6 MPH-8 MPH
  • 10 min ab work.. ten different moves, one minute each
  • 10 min stair mill at level 7

got a nice little calorie burn in 40 minutes.. 335 to be exact. sorry to not type the details of my workout. i don’t have it in me tonight. but i will say this: naomi taught me that i should always have a little bit of an incline on the treadmill to better simulate outdoor running. so from now on, i will at least have the treadmill at a 1.0 incline. thanks for the tip, sweet pea!

one GREAT thing about today??

i came home to ALLIEBARS!!!!!!!!!!!

IMG_0357

THANK YOU, ALLIE! i obviously ate 1/2 of one immediately. this girl makes the best granola bars ever. mark my words. she’s gonna be famous for these some day :)

meals

meal 4: tuna sandwich + veggies @ 7:00 PM

 IMG_0362

two slices of multigrain bread from sunflower market, one packet of albacore tuna (100 cals/20g protein) a squirt of ff mayo and a squirt of dijon mustard. and a diced pickle. yum.

IMG_0363

i needed veggies in my life.

IMG_0366 IMG_0368IMG_0370

nothing special. just some frozen veggies steamed and salted.

and now i am nibbling on the other half of my alliebar while i read real simple magazine and blog.

IMG_0371

mmm.

so, yeah. this post has been pretty unenthusiastic.

i haven’t eaten anything exciting and my appetite is a little absent due to stressed-out mode. i guess it makes for some boring blogging, but i think we all have those days!

home renovations. wedding planning. combining bank accounts/budgeting with future husband. work crap. vet bills. life can be stressful. and expensive. i just have to remember to breathe. and relax.

a few things..

  • my google reader is up over 400. and i am not going to read blogs tonight. love you guys, but i just need to disconnect. i will probably be MIA for a bit on the old reading home front.
  • the jazz better win tonight.
  • i love my dogs so much and would spend any amount of money on them. it is just that today’s tab was bad timing. wanted to clarify that.
  • i think i’ll bake some protein banana cake tonight and try to perfect the recipe to share with you guys.
  • i have some fun reader photos to share, but that will have to wait for another day.. i didn’t forget you guys!
  • i will probably have to eat another alliebar tonight.
  • tomorrow is a very exciting day/post for the blog.. so check back! i am sure i will be back to my normal self :)

Qs:

1. how is your appetite affected when you are stressed out? it’s strange.. usually i over-eat when stressed. over-eat on carbs.. mainly cereal and bread. unless it is a stress that makes me sick to my stomach (read: money issues) then i lose my appetite completely. but i eat anyway, because i know i should :)

2. today was national garlic day! what is your favorite way to incorporate garlic into your meals? i love anything and everything garlic! but i think a nice thick piece of garlic cheese bread cannot be beat. keeps those vampires away, right?

Kate April 19, 2010 at 7:11 pm

i want to know what the drama was!

cute cute cute dog story.

i put garlic in everything. recently i’ve been roasting whole cloves with chicken or beef. garlic nan is good…

and i eat a lot when i’m stressed. unless i’m nervous. then i stop eating completely. either way, it’s bad.

Brynne April 19, 2010 at 7:22 pm

you using the word “ornery” made my monday!

Stephanie April 19, 2010 at 7:24 pm

I could go either way for me…I either over eat or I don’t eat much at all. Either way stress definitely effects my eating habits.

Such adorable pups! Vets are expensive but you can’t put a price on love!

Kelly April 19, 2010 at 7:26 pm

The doggy love story is soo adorable – I have to wonder though, what did your vet think of you taking documenting the visit? How do explain taking photos everywhere?

I put garlic powder on everything… my fave is probably a nice garlic white wine sauce.

I go either way with stress, either I forget to eat or I eat a lot, it’s weird.

adrienmelaine April 19, 2010 at 7:27 pm

Oh my god- I cried the first time I took my cat to get shots- I have no idea what it’ll be like as a mother- but I am not looking forward to it..

Sorry you had a lot of drama today- but here’s the good news: today’s over! Have a good Tuesday!

simplyshaka April 19, 2010 at 7:29 pm

Only four more days to go….thankfully. I despise Mondays.

The puppy story made my heart smile :) Have a fun night of relaxation!

Katie April 19, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Awh, your dogs are so cute! :)
I can’t wait for that protein banana bread!
Oh, and where do you get the Sunflower Market bread? Isn’t it the really low carb/cal, but whole wheat one? Would it be possible for me to order some? It looks thick and bready. :)

Liz April 19, 2010 at 7:33 pm

I’m the same way about stress, either I overeat on carbs, or if it’s something like money or relationship problems, I tend to not eat much at all. Everything will all work out in the long run!

garlic & butter & pasta… you can put anything else with that combo and i’m a happy girl.

also, i made your chocolate ‘frosty’ but instead of vanilla protein i used strawberry and it was amazing!

Ashley April 19, 2010 at 7:36 pm

I could not stop laughing when you said Randy was starting Body For Life…nice to end the evening laughing hysterically :) The best addition to sweet potato fries is this: 3 tbsp of mayo, 1 clove garlic, squirt of lemon juice. Granted I’m a condiment hussy…and this is a treat…but dipping sweet potato fries in this mix is to.die.for. Try it!

Lori (Finding Radiance) April 19, 2010 at 7:46 pm

Vet bills, ugh! I will spend anything on my fur babies (and have….), but that doesn’t make the bill any easier to swallow.

Penny is adorable!

I eat, eat, eat when stressed. Doesn’t matter what, but usually snackable stuff like chocolate chips, handfuls of cereal, toast with PB.

That is my favorite Luna bar flavor, too!

Run Sarah April 19, 2010 at 7:52 pm

I am totally the same way with eating and stress. I have to be super stressed to undereat! I seriously loved the Penny story – I love puppies expressions and how they totally wear their heart on their sleeve, er, face? Are those the Costco veggies? I eat those SO much – they are so convenient and cheaper than any other frozen veg I can find with no weird additives!

Jena April 19, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Hope tomorrow is a better day for yaaaa!

hundredtenpounds April 19, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Have you tried the Egg Beaters that have “flavors”? I saw one that had peppers in it.

jqlee April 19, 2010 at 8:49 pm

OMG. THEY ARE THE CUTEST EVER!! Penny… sooooo soooo cute!

Dang, how do I score me some AllieBars? I feel like everyone’s got some but me! Haha. They do look good. Enjoy!

And oats are not boring girl. Nothing in syrup and cinnamon is boring :)

I just looked at your last post too. I am soooo jealous of your snowboarding! I want to go. I suppose I’ll have to wait until next year.

Jenn N. April 19, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Okay this post just made my night. I LOVE Penny and Randy. So ridiculously cute! Those pictures told the story perfectly.

I eat garlic ALL THE TIME!

When I’m stressed I want to eat more. ANNOYING!!

I get taking a break. I took one last week and it felt good. Although I missed some of my favorite blogs. ;-)

Michelle April 19, 2010 at 10:18 pm

Your dog story and pics was super cute.

Sorry you had a crappy day. I overeat when stressed for sure: sweet and starchy carbs all the way.

actorsdiet April 19, 2010 at 11:01 pm

i have to take julius to the vet soon….*sigh* not fun….

Tamizn April 20, 2010 at 12:27 am

Sorry to hear your day was a bit off, but its ok we all get those days. I always overeat I’m terrible for it! Roasted garlic is my favorite x x

Erica April 20, 2010 at 1:23 am

oh girl, I so feel for you. I took Frank to the vet last week for his routine shots and almost fell on the floor when the girl told me the total. I was like but, but he just got normal shots? Sigh, I’d do anything for my little man too. LOVE that your two babies are like two peas in a pod. Aren’t those Allie bars the bomb? Josh and I dove right into them when I got my pack. Allie rocks. I haven’t tried that flavor Luna, I will purchase it this week <3. When I'm stressed, I don't eat more or less, but I change what I crave (carrrrrrrrrrrrrrbs ;)). Hope the rest of the week is much better

balancejoyanddelicias April 20, 2010 at 1:43 am

i don’t know the details of your work drama but I’m sure it was drama to make you feel low… you’re always so happy and optimistic!!!
you made me laugh loud when you said penny is starting body for life! hhhah…… and $800 bill? wooo that’s insane!
when I’m stressed out I lose appetite, when I’m anxious I snack copious amount of carbs. but now that i found a new stress reliever (running outdoor), I don’t need these anymore :)

Naomi (onefitfoodie) April 20, 2010 at 2:24 am

i JUST talked on my blog how I went MIA and how I really dont have an excuse (i quoted you!) but really, i just needed a little tech break and didn’t want to be glued to my computer, so being MIA for 3 days, I just didnt have an excuse, I love blogging, but just dont get how some people blog 3 times a day! wowza!

love your food!! I NEED to try that sunflower market bread! 20g protein?! thats insanneee i want it so bad!! can you order it online?

your doggies are SO cute hahahah Penny on body for life…thats too funny!

yay glad you took the 1.0% grade tip! of course nothing will mimick running outside 100% but by having that incline on it def helps!

allie bars-these things are going around like mad! I want to try them!!

bahh $800….i feel ya on the expensive vet bill, that is a hefty price tag! hang in there janetha you ROCK

when I am stressed my body craves CARBS its so strange, I mean I know there is some hormone action going on thats making me do so, but seriously I could eat every loaf of bread and box of cereal in sight when I am stressed!

i LOVE garlic…straight up roasted in the oven for an hour. I eat the cloves whole!!

xo

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is April 20, 2010 at 3:27 am

I usually want carbs when I’m stressed, too. Crunchy carbs, like cereal or something. And of course, always chocolate.

Lauren April 20, 2010 at 3:41 am

Ugh, I hate those Mondays when you just feel blah! Come to think of it, I was definitely having one of those days yesterday too, but the day got better as it went on.

I always drown my stress woes in massive bowls of cereal. It’s the only thing that helps!

Take care my darling. Have a terrific Tuesday!

Lindsay April 20, 2010 at 3:56 am

eek, don’t remind me. I neeed to take our pups to get her shots. There goes my $$! SOmetimes being a grown up is the pits. $$ stress and all. I get sick to my stomach and can’t eat either. It will all work out in the end and thank goodness for those cutie pups of yours to make you smile. Happy Tuesday, it will be a good one!

tangerinesandmarmalade April 20, 2010 at 3:57 am

Aww Penny!

I don’t know why I didn’t put two and two together before, but your fave Luna flavor = my fave Luna flavor.

I don’t mind Mondays either. In fact, they make me kind of excited! Right now things are kind of hectic, but overall I enjoy the hustle and bustle of the “work week”.

I struggle to get food in when I’m stressed. It sounds weird, but I have to make a conscious effort to eat regularly. Coffee, on the other hand, I have no trouble downing!

Have an amazing day!

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) April 20, 2010 at 4:36 am

Oh my word. I’ll have you know that you just made my day with all those adorable doggy pics! You seriously have two of the cutest pups I have ever seen.

Monday is over and a new day is here! Hope your Tuesday is fabulous! :D

homecookedem April 20, 2010 at 4:54 am

Vet bills are crazy. It is very stressful, no matter how much we love our pups. I loved the pics of Penny waiting for Randy!! Omg, so adorable!! Our dogs are the same way!! I go running with just Ripsey b/c I can’t handle running with both of them and Ripsey whines (until she gets too tired to care anymore) b/c she misses her brother. I just love your puppy pics, they make my day!! :)

Maya April 20, 2010 at 5:04 am

Aww poor Penny! She is seriously ADORABLE.

I tried Alliebars when they were still in their perfecting stages and they were so good! I don’t usually like granola bars of that texture, but the Alliebar is an exception.

I love garlic! Have you ever tried roasted garlic? Because it is the BOMB.

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) April 20, 2010 at 5:05 am

Don’t worry about having a “Monday” every so often… we all do!

ADORABLE story about the pups. Penny loves her bro! Totally made my day. :)
I overeat when I am stressed as well- usually on carbs, too! But did you know there is a science behind it? Carbs increase the body’s stores of the chemical serotonin, which, when low, make you sad, irriable, etc… So they are natural “happy chemicals!” Go carbs. haha

I love, love, love garlic! On, um, anything? Ok, you’re right. Cheesy garlic bread wins. :P

April April 20, 2010 at 5:32 am

I love the dogs stories! They are both adorable :)

When i’m stressed I want to eat.

Heather (Where's the Beach) April 20, 2010 at 5:40 am

Your furbabies are too cute. I’m that way about mine too. They get homemade dog treats even. No store bought for those spoiled monsters ;-) Jealous of the Alliebars! YUM. Thankfully I am not a stress eater. I’d be in HUGE (and be huge) trouble if I were!

MelissaNibbles April 20, 2010 at 5:43 am

Oh Penny is adorable!

My stress level doesn’t affect my appetite at all. I’m not a stress eater, but stress does affect my muscles. I find when I’m stressed, I tense my muscles real tight and am just sore all over.

snackface April 20, 2010 at 6:06 am

It’s actually frightening how badly I want to eat your dogs. They are SO DAMN CUTE. Those faces!!! I want to squish them. In a loving way, obviously.

Taking good care of them can be so pricey, but so worth every penny.

Hope your Tuesday is better! Love you! xoxoxo

inmytummy April 20, 2010 at 6:16 am

My google reader is way high too. I’ve just been so busy. I hate when I miss out on people’s lives though.

I actually tend not to eat when I’m stressed.

Teri [a foodie stays fit] April 20, 2010 at 6:26 am

penny is quite possibly the cutest dog EVER. Don’t tell Maizey I said that.

I definitely comfort myself with food when I’m stressed. I wish I were one of those starve-myself types. ;)

sorry you had a blah day. Hope it gets better!

And does allie want to send ME some alliebars?? :) Does she sell them yet?

Holly (The Healthy Everythingtarian) April 20, 2010 at 6:51 am

honey bunches…i hope your tuesday improves leaps and bounds with many less bills, much less stress and some exciting news, which i am obviously uber-eager to read about. life seems to be getting so crazy lately – i feel ya on the stress. however, i tend to eat more when stressed, so i don’t have that not eating problem :)

however, i do seem to be contracting some ishy stomach thangs, which i am contributing to stress. i’m always behind on commenting on blogs, so no worries about that either. LOVE YA LADY!

freckledfoodie April 20, 2010 at 6:54 am

okay, so randy is cute, but penny is my fave. she is simply adorable!!

when i’m stressed, i do the sameeeee thing. vitatops beware! i could binge on those babies alllllll day when i’m stressing. especially the deep chocolate ones.

i know what you mean about days like that…when you feel like you’re just “going through the motions” it makes for a blah kinda day. today is starting that way for me too…not sure why? i think a lot of it comes from what kind of sleep i get the night before! i was really restless last night.
boooo.

anyway, happy tuesday janetha b! soon to be g ;)

Lauren @ Eater not a runner April 20, 2010 at 6:59 am

Sorry about the financial stresses :-/ Those are the worst. I tend to eat when I’m stressed, carbs are the cure I’m pretty sure.

greendog April 20, 2010 at 7:14 am

OMG I love Penny and Randy so much! :) They are just the cutest! :)

lisaou11 April 20, 2010 at 7:15 am

I usually always overeat when stressed. Theres only been one time in my life that I can recall where I was VERY stressed and insanely worried and even the thought of food made me sick so I just didnt eat. Usually I have the exact opposite reaction…food food food!

Graze With Me April 20, 2010 at 7:16 am

Awww, Penny is such a doll. I heart her little face. I’m both a stress eater and non-eater. I think, like you, it just depends on the type.

Can’t wait to see your house!

midgetkeeper April 20, 2010 at 7:21 am

Your Puppies are so incredibly cute! Love them.

Dawn (HealthySDLiving) April 20, 2010 at 7:25 am

I can’t even imagine how stressed out you must be! I’m the opposite though…I tend to eat more in stressful situations!

Paige @ Running Around Normal April 20, 2010 at 7:52 am

Sorry about the notsogreat day, dear! You’re right, it happens to all of us from time to time unfortunately.
Man it seems like every blogger has been sent the AllieBars to review! Mine must have gotten lost in the mail ;)
My appetite definitely dwindles when I’m stressed. But it seems like whenever I solve my stress problem, or when things are OK, it’s off the chain crazy. I guess it balances itself out :) Hope today’s a better day, girl! xoxo

Therese April 20, 2010 at 7:56 am

Aww babe I had a total case of the Mondays yesterday. Realizing we had exactly $30 to spend on groceries for the week…for two 6’+ tall people. I am going to starve. So your sitch could be worse lol! Oh and I’m injured and can’t do Insanity anymore…or run…and the elliptical even kinda hurts. I want to cry about that.

I LOVE LOVE LOVED that photo shoot of poor Penny missing Randy! OMG it was the cutest thing ever. Our friend Pete watched Daisy while we were gone and he kept sending picture texts which captions like “Daisy misses you!”

ellie April 20, 2010 at 8:05 am

Penny and Randy are so incredibly cute! Sorry your Monday wasn’t rad…I usually like Mondays but not this week. Hope your Tuesday is better!

1. how is your appetite affected when you are stressed out? it’s strange.. I lose my appetite when I am stressed out. Big time- I get stressed and am rushing around trying to do stuff and the thought of sitting down to eat when my stomach is all clenched up is horrible. Which then leads to being more irritable and moody so things get worse. No bueno.

2. today was national garlic day! what is your favorite way to incorporate garlic into your meals? I love garlic! I posted my fave recipe yesterday which I add lots of garlic too, but anything garlicky is a winner in my book. Except for the garlic and lime tofu “ice cream” I had once. That was nasty.

fightingwithfood April 20, 2010 at 8:13 am

As a former vet employee, I really, really feel your vet bill pain! At least once or twice daily, I had to break the “bad bill” news and I always felt guilty! Your pups look like they are grateful that you take good care of them, though :)
I am definitely an over-eater when I get stressed. I think it might be because of my Italian background and the food = comfort mentality.
I am also too lazy to chop garlic for most of my own meals so I use the garlic powder. It is so yummy in scrambled eggs (a trick I learned from my mom-in-law). If I cook for both of us, I use fresh in almost every dinner.

shegoesbananas April 20, 2010 at 8:27 am

So I stopped reading this post about half way through last night, around the tuna sandwich part, & I totally had a dream about ff mayo. So weird!!! I hope you feel less stressed as soon as possible. I totally lose my appetite when I’m stressed, nervous, excited, or sad. I have a very sensitive stomach in general, so it’s easily effected by emotions. I hope you have a fabulous Tuesday!

PS: I’m taking a road trip in a few weeks from AZ to ID and my family & I are driving through Utah and we will be in SLC for a day. Any suggestions for fun things to do?

Kelly April 20, 2010 at 8:32 am

When I get really stressed I tend to not eat….bad bad…I know!

Susan April 20, 2010 at 8:44 am

xoxoxoxo!!!!

Money stress is one of the worst kinds because it’s this deep-rooted worry that you’re not going to be able to afford life’s essentials. But I’m always optimistic about it – some things just find a way of working out!

As a side note, I just learned treadmills are actually designed on a decline. So you need to put it up to at least .5% to mimic flat terrain. Tricky!

1. I incessantly snack when I’m stressed. I’ll just keep popping things in my mouth, and usually skip real meals in favour of snacky items.

2. Garlic hummus!!

Hope Tuesday’s off to a better start <3
