hi! thank you so much for all the kind words regarding my pregnancy. super stoked over here, and so glad i can finally talk about it publicly.
it’s soooo nice and sunny today here in utah. in fact, marshall is out on his motorcycle right now! we went grocery shopping together earlier and then he decided it was just too nice not to dust it off and go for a ride. as for me, i just scoured the stores for maternity leggings (no luck) and that took it out of me.. so i am back home and decided to blog!
i wanted to share a few stories about how i personally found out about my pregnancy, how i told marshall, and how we told our families.
so, i had mentioned i was on clomid. after quite some time of trying to get pregnant naturally, my doctor prescribed this fertility drug. the issue was that my ovulation was roughly 2 weeks later than it needed to be in order to get pregnant, so i needed to move it up. (FYI.. they weren’t sure why i ovulated so late. they mentioned it may have been from all the continuous birth control i took for ten years, but that’s not proven.) i started the clomid and used ovulation tests and, what do you know, it did the trick and moved my ovulation up to where it should have been naturally. lucky for me (because clomid was AWFUL for me.. i had every side effect!) it just took the one round of clomid before getting pregnant.

how i found out.
i started taking pregnancy tests around december 15th, even though i didn’t have high hopes. most women have to have a couple, few, even more rounds of clomid before it works (if it ever even does.) i took a couple negative tests and then chilled out. i felt strange, though. i was more thirsty and tired than usual. my boobs hurt. i was craving salty foods like a mad woman, and sweets sounded horrible. i chalked it up to signs that my period was coming.. but i did have a nagging suspicion that i was pregnant.
on december 19th i took a test in the morning and got just the one line.. but there was a very faint second line that appeared 20 minutes later. like.. very faint.. not enough for me to think it was positive. i had to leave for work, but i wanted to know for sure. i stopped at the store on my way to work and snagged a digital test. this faint line stuff wasn’t working out for me. i got to work and took the test into the bathroom. kind of a funny thing to do at work, but it’s all i could think about! plus my work is pretty casual, haha. after what seemed like a very long 3-4 minutes, i had a positive reading on the digital test!

FYI.. that’s 1-2 weeks pregnant. not 1-2 babies ;) haha.
a crazy feeling came over me, i can’t even explain it. i was so happy and overwhelmed with emotion, but i had to hold it together since i was at work. i just grinned the day away and then headed home, excited to tell marshall the news.
how i told marshall.
usually marshall gets home way before me, but of course this particular day he happened to be on a very hard installation job AND it happened to be dumping snow. he wasn’t expected home until after 8 PM. i was going crazy waiting for him! i made dinner (beef stew) and then set up my idea of how i would tell him. since it was around christmas, i got a little stocking and put the test inside. i hung the stocking on the tree.

when he got home, we ate dinner and i let him unwind a bit because i knew he had had such a rough day at work. i was practically bursting at the seams at this point, but i held it together. finally after we ate, he asked if i wanted to go in the other room and watch breaking bad. i sat on the couch like an idiot and stared at him and he asked me what the deal was. i told him i got a new ornament for the tree. he said that once i said that, he knew exactly what was up. he went over to the tree and found the stocking with the test inside, and the rest is kind of a blur! lots of tears and smiles and happiness, i am sure penny and randy were happy, too. ha.
over the next week i had to go in and get multiple blood tests to make sure my levels were rising properly. the doctor put me on progesterone and, luckily, everything looked good each time i got a blood test.
how we told our families.
since it was so close to christmas, we realized we could incorporate some fun ways to tell our families the news! i know most people keep it hush hush until 12 weeks, but i figured i would want my closest friends and my family to know whether we made it that far or not. there was no reason not to let them in on our secret!
i love that marshall thought of both ways to tell his parents. he’s more crafty than pinterest!
marshall’s mom lives out of state, so we skyped with her on christmas morning. marshall had sent her a photo just before we connected to skype. he hung the little stocking on the mantle along with the rest of our stockings. when we skyped with her, he asked if she noticed anything in the picture. it was such a cute way to tell her! even though it wasn’t in person, it was still very special and fun.

for marshall’s dad and step mom, we headed to dinner with them. marshall gave his dad a christmas card that said “merry christmas, grandpa!”. it took only a few seconds for marshall’s dad to figure out the hidden message and then he was super excited!
my family all gets together on christmas eve for dinner. i was initially planning to tell them on christmas day, but it’s rare that we all get together, so i decided christmas eve would be best. my BFF mandy found a great way for us to spill the beans. she came across this idea on pinterest. i bought a binky and attached a little note…

clever! and i am notorious for forgetting things, so very fitting. i wrapped the binky up in a christmas package and we took it with us to the christmas eve celebration. we typically don’t open gifts on christmas eve, so i had to figure out a way for it to happen. we love to play games after dinner, so i bought a couple of games and wrapped them up and told my parents we had a few gifts for them to open that we needed to use on christmas eve.

my dad was super enthralled with the desktop skeeball game he opened, that he wasn’t paying much attention when my mom opened the binky! i told him he should probably see what she was opening, ha.

of course my parents both started to cry and then they passed the note around to share with everyone else. it went off without a hitch!
my sister and her family in san diego didn’t get the news around christmas. marshall and i visited them in the second week of january, so we wanted to wait to tell them in person. (that was SO hard for my mom, she basically avoided talking to my sister as much as she could, in fear she would spill the beans!) when we went out there, i was planning to take my brother in law a sample of my favorite pre-workout, arginine extreme. i can’t take it now that i am pregnant (well, and i don’t work out! haha.) so i took him the whole canister. when i handed it to him he said, “you don’t need to give me this much!” and i replied, “yeah, you should take it, i can’t take it anymore.. it’s not allowed.” he caught on right away and my sister wasn’t far behind. it was a lot of fun to be able to see their reactions, as they had anxiously been asking and asking if the clomid worked!
i also told a few of my best friends right away. i had a few clever ways that i told them, but i feel like the stories would take way too long to type out and since they included inside jokes and whatnot.. you wouldn’t really care anyway! but i definitely had to tell a handful of my friends so i could have people to talk to the first few months of this roller coaster ride. my BFF jessica is actually 6 weeks ahead of me in her pregnancy, so it has been SO MUCH FUN to have her through everything! i don’t know what i’d do without her!
the way i announced it on here (and on instagram) wasn’t really an idea until just before i posted. we already had family photos planned–well before we knew about the baby–and then we asked the photographer to take a few shots with marshall’s hand on my belly. they turned out cute, so i decided to turn that shot into an announcement. i thought it was funny that about half a dozen people said once they saw our family photos (in this post) they KNEW a pregnancy announcement was coming. that threw me off, as the pics had nothing to do with the pregnancy! it was just coincidence.
sooo, there you have it. some stories about how it all came to be and how the news was shared.
oh! i wanted to also tell you guys that we call the baby “poppy”. mandy named it.. because when we found out, it was the size of a poppyseed. so she dubbed the little speck “poppy” and it has stuck! it’s much better than referring to the baby as “it” since we don’t know the sex yet. so, poppy it is! and to think.. now poppy is almost the size of a nectarine! life is crazy.
again, thank you for all the congratulations and well wishes. i don’t intend to turn this into some pregnancy blog, but as you know i like to document my daily life.. and this whole fetus thing is kind of consuming me right now. so if you aren’t into reading about it, i TOTALLY understand. i was there once. i won’t be offended if you skip any and all posts having to do with babies!
Q~
those who have been pregnant.. how did you spill the beans? any fun stories?

Haha, I was not creative AT ALL! I am pregnant right now (30 weeks) and I had already told my hubby I was pretty sure I was pregnant, so after I took a test and new for sure, I pretty much just woke him up and was like, “yup.” Not exactly the stuff of movies! I went to visit my mom a week or so later, and I did write a card out for her, because I knew she’d want something to refer back to in order to remember the event. She started crying like a crazy person! My stepdad was excited, too. My father, sadly, passed away three weeks before I got pregnant, so I’m going to go ahead and assume he knew I was pregnant before I even knew myself :)
Mine was not creative at all. I was like, “I’m taking a pregnancy test now…come in here.” to Jason and I just called my parents and told them.
I love hearing about this stuff! I’m hoping to be in your shoes soon, so it’s nice to read about. How exciting! Wishing you and Marshall all the best!
AWWWWWWWWWWWW!! I love it all. We weren’t very creative. We kind of just told people ;)
Even though I lived all these moments in real time I was just as excited reading this blog lol… Poppy is already so loved I can’t wait to see you through this journey and hold the little gem!!!
i think i like that you deleted IG because now you comment again lmao. xoxoxo love you
I must say, love the name Poppy. That’s my daughter’s actual first name ;)
oh i’m crying. too much goodness! well besides the clomid side effects. I’m scared to death to take that now. thanks.
Oh my gosh, your mom’s reaction has me in tears! I love these “reveal” stories and am so so happy for you. Can’t wait to follow along!
I know this totally wasn’t the point of the post, but your nail polish from the picture where you’re holding the pregnancy test result is awesome. Where can I get it?
haha thanks. it was just a gel color at my local salon.
This is one of the things I look forward most to being pregnant! To tell our families! You all were so creative – maybe one day I will have to steal some of these ideas :)
I love when you chat about babies ;) Since I have a 10 month old! I spilled the beans by taking a picture of our Vizsla & putting a pair of shoes next to her & writing next to the picture “We’re expending our family by two feet, Coming March 2013” I loved the photo of Momma B :) can’t wait to hear some more stories! eeeeks so happy for you.
I love every word of this. That picture of momma b covering her face when she realized…amazing. It made m tear up. I am just so darn excited for you. Big huge fat hugs to you!!!
love you!
Of course I totally burst into tears when i saw that pic of your mom opening the present. Just gushed.
So a friend of mine was pregnant and when she was dropping her 4 year-old nephew off at school one day, he announced “This is my aunt and she has a baby named Tay-o in her tummy.” She has no idea what he was talking about and no idea where he came up with Tay-o, but they kept calling the baby that. When he was born, they named him Theo because everything else just sounded wrong. (He’s like 15 now, crazy). I hope you have a girl cuz at least then Poppy will be adorable. :)
You guys are so creative! I know with the second we weren’t creative at all, but I feel like with hunter we might have been… I just really can’t remember! I am excited to hear what your pregnancy is like for you and super pumped it didn’t take crazy long once you were on that prescription.
I love the picture of your mom’s reaction! We didn’t plan anything creative… we were just too excited to spill the beans to our families! However, my husband did take a picture of the positive tests and texted it to his siblings to announce the news. That’s the most creative we’ve gotten! We’re gonna wait until we’re out of the “danger zone” to do something a little more special.
Holy cow congratulations lady that is awesome news!! I love how you told Marshall and had tears in my eyes for how you told your parents. What a lovely way to share it with them :)
so fun!! i love these stories!! jonny is obsessed with miami so i had wrapped up a miami onesie and bibs (ok i wrapped them like a year ago!) and so that’s how he found out!!
Congrats sweetie!!! I’m sooooo happy to know the good news!!!! :D
so cute! i love your parents.
So sweet!!!! I love your mom’s reaction!!!!
I just showed that first ultrasound picture where the baby looks like a jelly bean because I’m not good at surprises and it seemed to do the trick! My husband was home and with me when I took the test so that worked out! Thanks for writing this post, I’m 33 weeks right now and it reminded me of when we first found out :)
I love how you told people, so cute!
I am behind you by a few days (due September 1). With regards to my husband I couldn’t keep it in so I just took the test into the bedroom and told him (it was 3am on Christmas Eve). We told our parents at my Birthday party about a month later, my husband had bought me a “Running for Two” tank and it was all wrapped up for the big reveal. We just told our siblings last week and it was so fun to tell them because my one sister-in-law is about 2-3 weeks ahead of me so we got them onesies referring to a cousin coming. What exciting times!
I love that you took a test at 3 AM lol. Congratulations!!
Too cute! Thanks for sharing. I totally teared up. Congrats again!!!
TOTALLY into reading all this! Love Momma B’s reaction in that photo! Thanks for sharing your journey with us! As someone on the edge of this lifestyle change myself (no news, but getting closer to start trying), it’s interesting to read the different experiences of everyone throughout the process. Hope you’re feeling better now too!
PS – love the nickname Poppy! We’ve joked about kids’ names, and we actually like Pepper (yes, like the girl from Ironman even though we aren’t Marvel fans – just so cute!) for a girl! Be careful with nicknames…our friends ended up only being able to call their son his nickname when he was born after referring to him by it for so many months! lol – Poppy would be cute as a real name! But those are touchy subjects and I’m not offering anything on any account. ;)
We had emailed a while back because you and I were both trying, and now we are both pregnant! Hooray for us!
<3 <3 <3 yay!!!!
I love all your creative ways of letting people know! Especially Marshall with the test in the stocking. How awesome!!!! xoxoxo
I always cry when I read these stories – no matter if I know the people or not. The emotions are all so raw and full of joy it’s hard not to get captured by it all.
Congratulations! I’m excited to read about your journey so please (in my opinion) share as much or as little as you want :)

these are THE best pants ever. theyre super soft and fold over, so they don’t cut in anywhere. they do run big.. but if you haven’t had any luck, I figured these might do it, plus they aren’t too expensive. if you can find the fold over capris too, theyre amazing.
CONGRATS AGAIN.. uhh I just teared up at work looking at momma b’s reaction! so sweet!

theres the capri.
ah thank you! checking out now. xoxoxo
ha! i took my pregnancy test in the work bathroom too! AND it was in december so i put the test in a baby bottle and gift wrapped it for my husband! i love the note with the pacifier – i would have been crying too! i love the pic of momma b! congrats janetha!!!!
Congratulations on your new addition! I love all the different ways people tell their loved ones. There are some really creative ways to do it, and it’s especially cool that you got to do it around Christmas.
For our second boy (only 10 months old now!) we had my sister take a picture. My 1yr old held a sign that said #1 and i held a sign that said #2 with an arrow pointing to my belly. We put the pics in a picture frame and gave them to our parents, and then put it on facebook.
ps. Congrats!
First off congratulations how exciting!
Secondly – thank you for sharing that you had your own struggles I have been having my own struggles the past year trying to conceive and knowing I am not alone has given me a boost in my own confidence that in due time it’ll all happen!
Your moms reaction is priceless! I am the youngest of 3 girls, and my mom will tell you, there is something very special about your “baby having a baby.” As much as I love everything health and fitness, I LOVE everything pregnancy and babies even more. Keep it coming girl! :-D
I love all these stories! These are great ways to announce it–love it!
We did creative stuff for our families, but the rest we were just like “we just want to put it out there!” So an ultrasound & a few words it was. It worked for us! hah.
I can’t WAIT to read all the updates!!! SO happy for you girl! <3
Such exciting news! Congratulations!
My parents were visiting when I was pregnant with our second. They stayed home to babysit. I put a onesie that I made that said, “I’m going to be a big sister,” on my daughter and when they got her dressed for bed they saw it. It was fun! Congratulations!
I’ve been following this blog for 3 years now and I have to say that pregnancy post personally dont bother me at all! I’m sure most of your readers feel the same way!
I really want kids in the near future so I love reading about day to day life at every step of the pregnancy! And I love reading how healthy blogger incorporate their routine with their pregnancy so please write baby posts :)
Once again, congrats!
again sweetie CONGRATS!!!While reading this post we both have huge smiles on our faces :) we are so happy for you and your family!!! and baby poppy!!! love hearing how you told everyone, so clever and cute!
xoxo
Congratulations! Those ideas of telling everyone were so cute!
I’m so excited for you!! I’ve read your blog forever and seeing you guys hit this next step in life is awesome. y’all will have such an adorable baby. I think poppy would actually be an adorable name if it’s a girl! Congrats again!
so exciting! your parents’ reactions are too adorable!!
The picture of your mom opening the binky makes me tear up. So cute.
Telling my parents was a nightmare because I wasn’t actually in a committed relationship that they knew of. So that was pretty rough. But once we had heard the heartbeat we spilled the beans to friends and family. I sent out a photo card with a picture of mine and Layne’s feet with a pair of baby shoes in the middle. My parents had taken a bunch of photos of them playing with toys. It was super cute.
I cried when I saw momma b’s face :) I’m just glad you call the baby poppy and not baby mealsandmoves.
uhhh.. right.. so glad you said that. it gets under my skin.
Congratulations!!! Your mom’s reaction made me tear up. So sweet.
We found out we were pregnant for the first (&only) time on February 3rd. I couldn’t wait to tell the family.
We told my husbands parents by giving them a bottle of wine that had a tag attached to it that said “Enjoy this from me, I will join you in 9 months, Baby Flores coming, October 2014” Of course they didn’t read the tag at first and only said thank you for the wine. Sheesh.
Told my parents by sending them a onsie in the mail (they live in another state) that said “Let the spoiling begin in 9 months”
We had more things we did, but don’t want to bore you with all the details.
Congratulations!!! I have always loved you blog and I am excited to be able to read about your pregnancy throughout the time.
Janetha-
I would love it if you did a post on what sort of symptoms/sickness that you had and if it’s still going on. I would like to know if my symptoms will go away any time soon since you’re a little ahead of me! Also, any advice that you have for dealing with the symptoms and getting through work would be awesome!
Congrats!!!! I know you said you don’t intend to turn the blog into a pregnancy blog, BUT I totally would continue to read if you did!!! Let’s face it, I’ll continue either way, but I love baby updates :D
Flipping pregnancy hormones, I can barely hold it together reading this and totally lost it when I saw the picture of your Mom opening the gift!!! So happy for you, HUGE congratulations!!!!
Congratulations!! You have such a cute bump (I read the most recent post before this one). I’m about 11 weeks pregnant, and my damn hormones had me almost in tears reading your stories! Ha.
I had a similar story to you, minus the Clomid. My husband & I had been trying for well over a year, with no luck. We visited an OB in October to get some tips, and went home to try them out. I used Wandfo ovulation strips & we just eventually lucked out! I found out end of Jan. & we weren’t able to keep it a secret for long, either. In fact, my husband posted our announcement on Facebook last Friday! He’s SO excited. Due to some spotting, and one worried husband, we got to see the little nugget 2 weeks ago; and it looked great & had a heart beat of 176 – so I think we’re in the clear! :)
I took a test before work one Friday, and again at lunch (also at work) because I had a faint line that morning. That test was positive too, so I called my Dr. and they got me in for blood work before the weekend. They called me at 4PM to tell me it was positive! That night, my husband got home late from work, and I had a onsie along with the positive test wrapped up on the kitchen counter. I also bought some NA wine, so I was sipping on that to throw him off when he got home. We told my parents & my husbands mom at dinner a few weeks later. We took them all out for a fish fry, and Ben handed them the announcement I designed and said “we got you guys this”. It took a few beats, but they finally figured out what it said and my dad ordered a bottle of champagne for the table! My husbands dad doesn’t get down to see us often, and so he had just called him to tell him over the phone.
I’ve also been dealing with morning sickness. Its been horrible. I’m barely able to eat, and I have a food aversion to almost everything. ESPECIALLY chicken. For now I eat as much as I can, which isn’t much, and I take a pill that the OB prescribed me to help with the nausea. I can’t wait for 2nd tri and to hopefully get some relief. 2.5 more weeks!!
I’m a little behind but I’ve been reading your blog for years so I had to say congratulations! I just had my first child in October, a little boy, so I’m excited for you (and happy you’re feeling better)!
We tried to do the “cute” ways of telling our parents but since they thought we couldn’t have kids, they all missed the point except for my mom. My dad’s reaction was funny though. I had bought a card that said, “A grandchild is on the way” and put it in a bag with a newborn Montreal Canadiens onesie, which is his favourite team. He opened the bag, looked at the onesie, looked at the card, and then said, “Is Christina pregnant again?!” Christina was their neighbour who had moved away the previous month. I have no idea why that was the first thought that popped into his head when he read the card but he was happy when he realized his mistake. :)
haha that is classic! love it! hope you are enjoying being a new momma :) xo
