i hate that word.

hi! how was your thursday? mine was fab.

i worked the morning away and then headed to lunch with mandy. we went to desert edge followed by a little trip to lulu since it was around the corner.

IMG 5627IMG 5625IMG 5624

i had a turkey avocado sandwich and french onion soup. at lulu i snagged a couple tanks that were on sale and a long sleeve that i’ve been coveting for months.

after work i came home some fun mail! i got a pair of reebok sky DMX kicks and looove the colors.

IMG 5635

don’t they remind you of an easter egg?! i threw them on, sucked down a protein shake, and headed to the gym for some sideways action. i followed that up with 20 minutes of HIIT on the treadmill so i could test my new shoes.

blank-white (1)

[pinit]

this routine will carry you a little over 2 miles. it’s fun to change your speed every minute.. i have to, otherwise i get bored to tears on the treadmill! i really liked the shoes.. it was like running on soft springs. i am used to minimalist shoes, so it was definitely a change. but a good, comfortable change!

after the gym i headed home and made dinner for me and marsh. meatball subs were on the menu, so i had to stop by the store to get some buns. this was a semi-homemade meal.. we totally cheated by using trader joe’s meatballs and marinara. but i did assemble them, so that counts for something, right?! i used daiya jack cheese for mine and actually loved the flavor (and the fact that it got super melty.)

IMG 7050

i made a simple side salad (lots of green–romaine, avocado, broccoli, cucumber.. and then cauliflower) to go with the subs and topped it with our favorite dressing.. again, from trader joe’s. it’s so good, you’ve got to try it!

IMG 7052

and now onto the title of today’s post!

IMG_7780

are there any words or slang terms you hear or read and it sends you over the edge in a cringe fit? i know you have at least one or two.. right? well, here’s my cringe-fit-list:

  • beastmode. it is getting more and more popular by the second. why?! i am not a beast nor in a mode that resembles that of a beast when i am working out.
  • moist. i feel like a lot of people hate this one!
  • food porn. i don’t like to relate my food to porn for some reason.
  • even worse: yolk porn. i see this on instagram often. it’s images of runny eggs. now when i am scrolling through my IG feed and see someone post a runny egg, i hold my breath hoping they don’t call it yolk porn.
  • panties/undies. what can we use instead? i don’t love underwear either.. but i guess it is better than the other two. maybe i just won’t talk about that article of clothing ever again.
  • amazeballs. i am not sure why this caught on with such rapid fire. i do love using the word “balls” solo. (“holy balls, it’s cold.”) but not with amaze- in front of it.
  • nom nom nom. i think i was guilty of using this phrase in 2009. i quickly realized how much i disliked it.
  • yummo. pretty sure rachael ray made this one popular? rachael, i love some of your recipes, but not the word “yummo”.
  • foodgasm. again.. i don’t need to turn my love for food into a sexual encounter. no food porn, no foodgasm.
  • awesomesauce. i like awesome. i like sauce. please keep them separate, though.
  • prego or preggers. no. you are pregnant.. with child.. having a baby. you are not pasta sauce.
  • HUBBY (or wifey!)<—i think this one is #1 in my cringe book.

(source)

of course, i am guilty of using words that other people love to hate. a few that come to mind:

  • totes. i used to hate it and now i am hooked. i don’t ever say it, but i totes text it all the time.
  • ridic. i guess i have a thing for shortening words.. i like ridiculous, but ridic is fun to say.
  • nugget. as in.. that is a very important nugget of info or that baby is a cute little nugget.
  • fab. i even said it in my opener of this post.
  • fanflipingtastic. or putting “flipping” in the middle of any word, really.

oh.. and another thing i love that lots of people loathe?

#unneccesarilylonghashtags

#icantgetenoughogthem

#iknowtheyareridicbuthteyarefun

#sorryimnotsorry

your turn!

1. what are some words/slang terms you hate?

2. what are some words slang terms you use but others hate?

p.s. my casserole recipe was featured over on all free casserole recipes (what an awesome idea for a website!) check it out :)

ML Bishop February 28, 2013 at 9:04 pm

ABSOLUTELY agree on ‘hubby’…nails on a chalkboard. That and when people say ‘smh’– that has got to be the most ridiculous abbreviation ever.

Becky @ The Heart of Life is Good February 28, 2013 at 9:14 pm

Agreed, hubby is kind of annoying. I am TOTALLY guilty of using some of your hate words though, hahaha.

Maybe not so much slang, but I HAAATTEEE how people use the word “retarded” to describe things. It is completely insensitive and inappropriate! I work with some well educated adults and many of them say that word. I think we are smart enough to find a different adjective.

Nicole @ Fruit 'N' Fitness February 28, 2013 at 9:21 pm

I agree with you 100% I also HATE when people use ‘gay’ as a derogatory way to describe things.

Nicole @ Fruit 'N' Fitness February 28, 2013 at 9:20 pm

I am guilty of using moist. I also hate the word but sometimes when you have the perfect pumpkin bread thats the only way to describe it. maybe i’m just not creative enough. I say ‘yum’ quite frequently and i know thats a word lots of people don’t like.

Cassie @redletterdaye February 28, 2013 at 9:22 pm

Ahh love this. Yup, panties, so gross, although I do prefer underwear. Undies? Underoos? Panties sounds like pedophile terminology. Moist, everyone hates, but doesn’t really bother me. Nom nom nom, and anything yum, yummo, yummy…VOM! (Ohh, that’s one I like!). I am however, guilty of probably at least hashtagging all those words or some variation, and love long ridic hashtags. I actually think I like ridic because it sounds like, wsay the ell, dick, which makes it even more ridic. I do hate people that abrevs. everything. Just the freakin word, it’s usually an extra syllable, you can handle it. I also used to date a guy that said “word!” a lot when he was mad….word? word! Obviously that didn’t last. Haha.

Kristina February 28, 2013 at 9:34 pm

GAAH I am so with you on yolk porn. just… no.

I love to use hashtags as often as possible, and love to use them incorrectly – making a super long phrase that will never possibly be hashtagged other than the one time I do it. #DefeatsThePurpose #AndILoveIt

April February 28, 2013 at 9:42 pm

Haha..excellent post.

The word that makes my skin crawl is “legit.” I know it is very popular right now but I constantly either want to use the entire word legitimate or just a synonym.

And, as you, I love the word balls. I say “Oh balls!” quite a bit thanks to Big Bang Theory.

Stacy Stevens February 28, 2013 at 9:51 pm

This post cracked me up! I agree with you on so many of those, but for me some of the worse offenses are: totes, cra cra, prego, preggers, awesome-sauce, rad-sauce, basically any word with sauce in it. I think I could go on, but I’ll spare you. :) And hashtags on everything, totally drives me crazy. Hahaha! One or two, okay, but five, six, seven. Not okay. Ever.

Janetha February 28, 2013 at 9:59 pm

OH MY GOSH I AM ADDING PREGO AND PREGGERS TO THE LIST NOW. thank you. totally forgot.

Carly @ Snack Therapy February 28, 2013 at 9:52 pm

I HATE “nom.” I also hate weird euphemisms for sex that teenaged boys often use… as in, “we smashed” or “we boned.” Ew!

I’m actually super guilty of sexualizing food… It’s kind of ridic ;). I often claim to have had a sexual and/or spiritual moment with a good plate of food.

I also don’t love when people describe themselves as being “anal.” It just sounds dirty! Oh! And I hate “epic.”

Okay. I’m done.

SuzanneW February 28, 2013 at 10:06 pm

I despise the Rachel Ray phrase “Yummo “. Hated it.

Lisa February 28, 2013 at 10:22 pm

Those shoes are the best thing I’ve ever seen!
Hahaha, yolk porn = no. That’s just the worst.
I also hate nom nom, amazeballs, foodgasm, and hubey, and wifey are probably (I almost just types probs) my top cringe worth terms. However, I love using totes magotes, probs, obvi, ridic, fab, but sometimes hate when other people use them. Kind of uncool of me I suppose.

Holley February 28, 2013 at 10:25 pm

I agree with every single one of your dislikes. Every. Single. One. Thanks for a fun post!

tiffany @dynamics of happy February 28, 2013 at 10:41 pm

haha i love this post!!
i totally agree about amaze-balls and undies!
i hate when people SAY lolz (typing it out is ok with me), i HATE “ohai” and “kk.”
oh and i HATE when people say “dicking off.” EWWW! fucking around (in the context of wasting time) is ok with me, but dicking off? just..no…

this is not a slang but i notice that it’s quite popular on blogs but makes me cringe every time is when they use “obviously.” i never had a problem with it until i came to med school when professors would say things like “so this middle cerebral artery obviously supplies this part of the brain so obviously if you had a stroke in this area, you would have XYZ symptoms.” ok sure even if it’s not the hardest concept, it’s def not “obvious”…so now, i associate obviously with a condescending tone- i know that when bloggers use it, they don’t necessarily mean it in a condescending way…but even things like “then i added pb to my oatmeal. obviously.” i’m incapable of shaking off the condescending tone!!

tiffany @dynamics of happy February 28, 2013 at 10:41 pm

correction: dicking around, not dicking off

Kristina February 28, 2013 at 11:12 pm

+1000 on awesomesauce and amazeballz. What does that even mean?

Also, cray. For some reason it looks fine written, but when spoken, it drives me crazy.

Heather February 28, 2013 at 11:24 pm

I hateeeeee the word “scab”, and also “swig”. No, you may not have a swig of my drink. Gag

amy March 1, 2013 at 12:31 am

I call it the “W” word. It hurts me to even write this “wiener”!

Krista C. March 1, 2013 at 12:47 am

I practically want to hurl when people, mostly men, use the term “panties.” “Underwear” is much better but I mostly use the term “knickers.” It makes people laugh and I like the sound of it.

Amanda March 1, 2013 at 1:19 am

Nom. Yummo. Cray. Amazeballs. They all drive me insane.

Katheryn March 1, 2013 at 1:21 am

I agree with most of yours as well as epic and YOLO

Erica March 1, 2013 at 2:40 am

Congrats on being featured! Those shoes are SO so cute. I’m definitely for the brightly colored shoes trend. I made TJ meatballs this week too. They are really good. I use amazeballs ;). I can’t stand the word moist either…makes me feel sick to my tummy

Kristy @ Kristy's Health Revolution March 1, 2013 at 3:57 am

I don’t mind ridiculously long hash tags, I think they’re funny! What bothers me is when people post photos on IG with #every #single #word #hastagged #even #the – what’s the point of that!!??

ha ha ha!

Sam @ Better With Sprinkles March 1, 2013 at 6:30 am

100% agree with you on the word ‘hubby’ – It’s always made me cringe!

SweatyGirl March 1, 2013 at 7:14 am

I don’t mind “moist” but I think its because I’ve always associated it with Sarah Lee chocolate cake commercials. And there ain’t nothing wrong with chocolate cake! :-)

I also hate “amazeballs” (or using “amaze” instead of “amazing”)
And I have come to hate “literally” if only for its constant misuse!

the delicate place March 1, 2013 at 7:19 am

you get 1000 love points from me. i loathe every.single.word. you listed! esp all the hyper-sexualized food terms. um. it’s food. i like to eat but it is in no way pleasurable in the same way as the bedroom. settle down or get some…seriously.

i overuse ‘seriously’ but i don’t care if it annoys anyone. i’m a walking hyperbole.

Michelle @ Eat Move Balance March 1, 2013 at 7:20 am

Hi Janetha,
Just thought I’d let you know that I posted a follow-up on “becoming a health coach” on my blog today (b/c today is my graduation!!), in case you are interested. :) Happy Friday!!

P.S. Not a fan of hubby (wifey) either, and too many hashtags drive me crazy. :)

Whitney March 1, 2013 at 7:34 am

What about “cray”? I used to hate it, but then it started making me laugh… and somehow I’m now that person who uses it. Ooch!

I love beastmode! I even have a friend I call Beastmode. Haha, poor guy! It’s a little hypocritical of me, though, because I HATE being called it, but love to call people it.

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning March 1, 2013 at 7:40 am

Two words I hate that make me CRINGE:
“Dippy”- in reference to runny eggs. Just typing it makes me want to puke.
“Sternum”- because my mother-in-law says it often, referencing a surgery her husband had, and just the way she says it makes me cringe. And now, if anyone else says it, it’s like nails on a chalkboard.

I use a few offenders on your list: Yes, I hashtag “Yolkporn.” It makes me laugh. I also say hubby and preggers. I think PREGGERS is HILARIOUS!!!!

Oh- I thought of one more. I don’t hate the word, but it drives me crazy when people emphasize the “wa” on Quinoa. Arrrrrgggggh.

Megan March 1, 2013 at 7:42 am

I also hate “hubby” and “wifey” and anything that means pregnant that isn’t the word “pregnant.”

Also “awoke.” For some reason, I just want everyone to say “I woke up.” Not “I awoke.”

I overuse “totes,” though, so maybe I shouldn’t complain.

Amanda @ Romancing the Unusual March 1, 2013 at 8:57 am

This is funny because “awoke” seriously drives me nuts, and I totes thought I was the only one! I have no idea why but it’s grating!

Sian March 1, 2013 at 7:48 am

I don’t know if anyone’s uses this word in USA for underwear, but I Cringe st this one: gonach ( I don’t even know if I am spelling it right! Another word makes me puke in my mouth is phylum! Yuk!

Jenna March 1, 2013 at 7:49 am

Presh. Every time someone uses that instead of precious, I want to gag.

Linz @ Itz Linz March 1, 2013 at 8:18 am

haha this really made me laugh! i HATE foodporn or anything else with the p word in it relating to food. unnecessary! i shamelessly like beastmode and nom nom nom though!

Amanda @ Romancing the Unusual March 1, 2013 at 8:54 am

I love long and ridiculous hashtags!

Lauren March 1, 2013 at 8:54 am

Haha, I remember having a conversation w/you about the word hubby and how much you hated it. I agree on more than half of those words on your list. Ugh, york porn makes me cringe!!!

Maren March 1, 2013 at 8:57 am

I have that same long-sleeve in the gray lace. LOVE it!! I use amazeballs when I actually make fitnessista’s amazeballs. But that only happened once… they were bomb I should make them again! haha I HATE HATE HATE the word booger. Gross. Makes me gag just typing it out. haha!

Calee (@chimes) — life + running March 1, 2013 at 9:12 am

guilty as charged on amazeballs and awesomesauce. word vomit right there. I typically cringe when I realize I’ve said or typed those (non) words again. d’oh.

I’m also a fan of inserting “freaking” (not flipping) or the real “f” word into words.

Shari March 1, 2013 at 9:31 am

Not a fan of the word panties. I know people who use gutchies when talking about underwear.

Sami March 1, 2013 at 9:33 am

i hate the words nostril and buttocks. can’t people just say nose and ass?

:)

Kate Marsh March 1, 2013 at 10:09 am

Oh my god, I love this! I HATE when people say “nom nom nom” more than anything. Thanks for posting… it made me happy.

Nicole C March 1, 2013 at 10:23 am

I 100% agree with everything on your negative list, especially prego/preggers. I have a friend who was pregnant and another that kept saying that to her, it was like she wanted to get punched. It didn’t sit well.

I do have to say, totes is not one of my favorite words. Anything a valley girl or a phrase that could be on the movie Clueless, I can’t handle. I love that movie though and sporadic is a great word. OHH and when this one particular facebook friend says ‘ aWEsome’

The Healthy Hostess March 1, 2013 at 10:33 am

I have a girlfriend who is a casserole lover – I am sending her the site! :)

natalie@thesweetslife March 1, 2013 at 10:49 am

totally easter egg shoes!! :)

okay i know everyone hates moist but i would love to know a substitute to use bc i cannot think of a good one and sometimes things are MOIST! amiright?!?

Susie March 1, 2013 at 1:41 pm

Brewski. Brewskis. Stop. It is a beer. My fiancé LOOOVVVEESS to say that whenever he is talking about hanging with his boys. He also likes to ask “was it scawrwy?” In an atrocious, babyish voice whenever I say something like “oh sorry I just had a mad itch” or something. No. It itched. Or it was annoying or irksome or FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAN YOU ARE GOING TO BE A DOCTOR IN 2 MONTHS SPEAK LIKE A GROWN HUMAN BEING.
Sorry. Had to get it out

Omg and I ABHOR the word “nooch.” #ohgodpleaekillmenowinaburningballofflame

Janetha March 1, 2013 at 3:14 pm

haha your comment made my freaking day.

jodie March 1, 2013 at 2:12 pm

I hate “sorry I’m not sorry” because it’s everywhere!

Lindsay March 1, 2013 at 2:18 pm

I agree with that whole list of words you hate. I can’t stand “food porn” and “yolk porn.” Ugh.

Heidi Nicole March 1, 2013 at 2:21 pm

There are a lot of words that have me immediately categorizing people but the one that really gets me is when people refer to their hubby or wifey. Use it once and bam, they are viewed as a high schooler. Ridiculous, I know, but I can’t help it!

Kathleen March 1, 2013 at 3:15 pm

Have you/would you do a post about what (non-perishables) are your favourites to get from Trader Joe’s? I am going for the 1st time next week (will be visiting Maine from Canada) and would love some recommendations.

Thanks!

Katie @ Talk Less, Say More March 1, 2013 at 3:52 pm

BAHAHAHAA!!! So what made this so much funnier is that I have my twitter feed open and saw a tweet that said “nom nom nom” while reading about how much you hate that phrase. Oh i love that that just happened. ;)

Sara @ fitcupcaker March 1, 2013 at 4:08 pm

I hate “yummo”. i stopped watching rachel rae on food network for this very reason!

momma b. March 1, 2013 at 6:22 pm

I TOTALLY agree with all of your words – some that drive me crazy:

It hurts to type the following:
Poo (please just say poop)
Turd (please just say poop)
Anal – ugh – stupid will do just fine

Real -a – Tor (it is realtor)
Real – i – ty (it is realty)

All of the preggs, preggo, etc ugh!
Hubby, hubbo, wifey also ugh!

Fabulous is so over used and I over use totally (see above) haha
Any word and then porn….not acceptable

I LOVE tons of cute hashtags and long ones I think they are adorable (ugh that’s not good)

And of course the ever over used phrase “oh for______” you know fill in the blank…….awful

I’m sure I could go on and on! Fun post Neef – I love you!!

xoxo

Janetha March 1, 2013 at 7:04 pm

I can’t figure out the blank.. drawing a blank on the blank haha

Momma b March 1, 2013 at 9:39 pm
