on overcoming fear & believing in yourself.

by Janetha on July 11, 2012

in deep thoughts,moves

i have been going to GPP almost every single day for the past few months. i will miss a workout here and there, but that is only if i am out of town or have some obligation that prevents me from being able to get to class.  however, i have never missed a workout simply because i didn’t want to go.

the workouts at GPP are always challenging, but they never scare me. sure, some are more intimidating than others, but i always know they can be scaled to my ability and that i will be able to get the workout done one way or another. i love GPP for that very reason.  i can adapt.

yesterday’s workout, however, scared the daylights out of me. i saw it monday night (neil posts the workouts the night before) and saw that hand stand push ups were part of the workout.

image

“SLS” stands for single leg sit-to-stand squats. i knew that one right away and i actually like those so i got a little excited at first! then i saw the acronym that was new-to-me: “HSPU”. hmmm.. it didn’t click in my head right away, so i clicked on the video link. right when i saw the video demoing handstand pushups, my initial excitement for the workout disappeared and turned to sheer and utter fear. yes, i’m being dramatic, but yes, i’m being serious.

i had never done a handstand. no, not ever. i never played “hands up, stands up” as a kid. i didn’t do gymnastics. i could never do a backflip on the trampoline or off the diving board. going upside down frightens me. last week i’d tried to do handstands with amanda and kerryne, but i failed miserably and decided i was never meant to do them.  who needs handstands, anyway?!

so, of course, when i saw tuesday’s workout on monday night, i quickly decided that i was NOT going to go. no way, no how. amanda, kerryne, and i had a little chat about it.

photo 011

i was up at my mom’s house with my family, so we decided to try a few handstand pushups to see what would happen. i failed miserably and had a minor freak out, but my mom and marshall busted them out like it was no big deal! i was seriously impressed.  i was also seriously discouraged and decided i for sure was NOT going to GPP the next day.

photo 012

tuesday morning came and went and i didn’t go to GPP at my usual 6:30 AM time. i was serious about not going!  later on in the morning, i was texting nick about the workout. i wondered what the modification might be for those who couldn’t hang with handstands.

photo 014

i was super scared and wanted to wuss out. i decided to fess up to neil (AKA the creator of the horrible workout) about my fear.

photo 013

dang. nick was rocking that handstand!

image

if you remember, nick started his fitness & healthy eating journey not too long ago. i designed him a 12-week eating plan and he started going to GPP. seeing him upside down at GPP made me think twice. i needed to not be so scared.

as the day went on, i couldn’t stop thinking about those dang handstands. i wanted to go try the workout, but i was scared. you guys probably think i am sounding dramatic, and maybe i was, but I WAS SCARED.  seeing the comments on the workout post did NOT help.

image

ha. great! thanks, shmoops, that was real encouraging.

it was almost 5 o’clock and i still was scared about the class but i wanted to go..just a little bit. i tried to get marshall to go with me. he makes me feel OK about anything in life. i decided that if he would go and help me, i would be fine. i nearly begged him to go to the 5 o’clock class with me… but he didn’t want to go. however, he urged me to go on my own. after a little convincing from marshall, i decided to just suck it up and head to GPP. i had the sickest feeling in my gut the whole way there, but i made it.

photo 009

i walked in the door and immediately started whining to lil’ kate about my inability to do handstands (or anything involving coordination, for that matter.) she gave me a pep talk and encouraged me to just give the handstands a shot. lil’ kate is the best. lizz, one of the awesome GPP trainers, assured me that she’d help me through the workout and spot me on the handstands. i was sure that i wouldn’t get up on my own, but i was even afraid that i wouldn’t get up with a spotter! it may have had something to do with the fact that monday night i kicked marshall when he was trying to spot me.. then when he did get me upside down i flipped out and had a conniption about being inverted. i hated all the blood rushing to my head and it totally freaked me out. i know, i know, again.. drama queen. but i’m just telling you the truth!

anyway, lizz helped me up on my first attempt to get inverted.. and what do you know, i didn’t kick her in the face! i also managed to stay up (with her help) and do some sort of tiny push-up motion.. we are talking a couple centimeters, folks. better than nothing, right?

the workout called for ten rounds, and i decided i couldn’t have lizz spot me on ALL TEN, so when round two came along.. i attempted the handstand on my own. guess what? i did it! first try! and then i did the other eight rounds, too! i was SHOCKED at myself. i went 29 years saying i couldn’t do handstands.. and there i was, handstanding it up.

photo 007

and not only that, i was managing to do something that may one day resemble a pushup! sure, it may be centimeters now, but you gotta start somewhere.

photo 008

when i got home last night, i decided to try a few in my bedroom to see if it was just a fluke or if i really could do it. note: i’d tried handstands in my room no less than a dozen times in the past two months. and guess what? i did it—every single time i tried!

the difference this time around? i believed in myself.

image

i overcame a fear yesterday. sure, it was a small one in the grand scheme of things.. but it was a little big deal to me. i was scared, but i tried. they say you should do one thing a day that scares you. i told myself this several times yesterday before heading to GPP.. and then i went. and i did it. it was scary, but i did it. and i sure am proud.

side note, i loved what neil said about why he had us do the handstand pushups to begin with:

I know it was a weird move.  I know you didn’t want to do it.  I wouldn’t have asked you to do it, but there’s fitness in it.  Good stuff too.  Many times we (not GPPeeps) get caught up in working the big four (cardio, stamina, strength, flexibility) and forget about the nervous system and our proprioception (ability to sense where your body is in relation to space and time).  The thing to remember is, if you can’t USE the fitness you are building, there really is no point in having it, right?  Proud of all who gave this a try today.

I was flat convinced Nick wasn’t going to try.  Like many of you, he did.  And did it well.  Congrats to all of you!

so, yes, there was a physical reason behind it all (as there always is with any workout!)… but what i took away from the workout was way more than physical. i overcame a mental block, which is way more satisfying than any physical feat.

Qs~

1. what’s the last thing you did that was scary to you?

2. what is something in your life right now that you haven’t tried because you’re too scared?

i challenge you all to step outside of your comfort zone and try something that scares you. maybe not today—but soon. and report back!

Stephanie @ The Fitness Adventures July 11, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Congratulations on overcoming your fear! I haven’t done a handstand since I was a kid. Now you have me convinced that I have to try these handstand pushups.

Carrie @Shrinkingcarrie July 11, 2012 at 2:58 pm

This is SOOO inspiring Janetha!!! It makes me want to run out and try something new just so I can feel that sense of pride and accomplishment! I had something similar (but definitely not a headstand) that helped me feel that sense of accomplishment when I finally tried a move that I was too afraid to try. When I was doing the program New Rules for Lifting for Women the Prone Jack Knife move scared the living daylights out of me and it took me 3 sessions until I said F it and just did the stupid move just to see how far off I was. Turns out I could have been doing it all along and now I feel silly for worrying about it for so long!
Congrats on the headstand, you look awesome!

Alex @ Brain, Body, Because July 12, 2012 at 7:05 am

The prone jackknife used to scare me, too. I was always afraid that my feet would slip off the ball and I’d kick myself in the face.

Great job on the handstand, Janeetha! You should be really proud of yourself.

Katie @ Peace Love & Oats July 11, 2012 at 3:30 pm

Haha all those texts sound like you were trying to get some encouragement! Awesome job on doing them!

Lena @Fit on the Rocks July 11, 2012 at 3:32 pm

Awesome job, Janetha. I’m deathly afraid of doing handstands myself. I’ve actually never even done a cartwheel….

Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table July 11, 2012 at 3:36 pm

Way to get back in there! My coach always reminds me that a huge [art of weight lifting (or handstands push ups) is mental. If you tell yourself you can, you can do a lot more than you ever thought possible! And he helped me prove that last night leg pressing more than I should was feasible for my chicken legs!

Erin @ erinberries July 11, 2012 at 3:52 pm

This is so awesome! I’ve come up with so many excuses to not go to the gym. I think one time I even said “Oh today my pelvis feels heavy…so I’m not going.” Haha! I’m an idiot.

ali July 11, 2012 at 3:53 pm

Woo Hoo Janetha! That is sooooo awesome! Way to go! My hubby was a little nervous as well, as he hasn’t done many a handstand in his life. I’m so glad you gave it a try and just did it! Proud of you!

By the way….I’m in Janetha withdrawal! Haven’t seen you since last week!

Have a great day!

Sam @ Better With Sprinkles July 11, 2012 at 4:04 pm

I’m doing a series of posts on my blog right now about my experiences with anorexia – it’s definitely nerve-wracking to put something so personal about yourself on the internet, but if it’s therapeutic for me and might even help someone else, it’s completely worth it in my mind. :-)

Heather @ Better With Veggies July 11, 2012 at 4:08 pm

That is awesome!!! I’ve seen those done in TRX before and always thought it looked very intimidating. And I can do a handstand. Awesome job overcoming your fear and trying it!

corrie anne July 11, 2012 at 4:25 pm

Oh man. I was terrified to kick up for a handstand the first time too!! I haven’t gotten the actual push-up part down yet, but I have a great new wall to practice on in our new house. I was a huge pansy the first time I tried box jumps as well… Glad you shared… I’ll have to think of a new challenge.

Katie July 11, 2012 at 4:51 pm

SO awesome to read this post, Janetha! You literally wrote out my experience yesterday at Crossfit. I’ve *never* done a handstand before and for some reason have been terrified to kick up against a wall… My coaches were super-motivating and I just went for it and did it on the first try! Like you, I only did a few centimeters of the HSPU, but I managed 5 rounds of it (along with 5 rounds of snatch and double-unders), and was on the MOON when I finished. My FB status glowed about being able to do a HSPU yesterday for the first time!

Thank you SO much for being a blog I consistently come to for inspirational and similarly-minded fitness experiences & advice!!

Kammie @ Sensual Appeal July 11, 2012 at 5:09 pm

Such an awesome post. I probably wouldn’t have gone because like you, I have never done a handstNd in my life. I suck. I also can’t do a proper cartwheel. Sucks to suck. Im glad you faced your fear and went for it in the end though and you succeeded no less! :) great motivational post.

Michelle @ Eat Move Balance July 11, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Way to go! What a great post.

And about overcoming something I feared (what others might think) . . . pursuing a health coach certification and starting a blog (that you just read about!). :)

TeriLyn [a foodie stays fit] July 11, 2012 at 5:28 pm

wait, is GPP in the old Holladay REI location??

Last thing I did that was scary: you know the answer to that one! :)

That totally surprises me that you’ve never done a handstand. For some reason, I thought you were into gymnastics at some point. Maybe it’s because you’re short and people always ask me if I was a gymnast because I’m short. ha!

Janetha July 12, 2012 at 8:57 am

Nope, it’s in centerville. And EVERYONE asks if I was a gymnast! Then they say I have big, short legs. THANKS! hahaha.

Danielle @ Clean Food Creative Fitness July 11, 2012 at 5:37 pm

Congratulations on the HSPU! That was something that scared me for so long with crossfit and once I finally believed in myself and had the courage to try it! I could do it! It’s amazing what a change in our thinking can do for us! Thank you for that reminder :)

Mary (A Merry Life) July 11, 2012 at 5:57 pm

That is so awesome! You rock! Congrats on overcoming your fear and knocking it out!

Tina @ Best Body Fitness July 11, 2012 at 6:04 pm

I would have been scared too. But I never doubted you. Seriously hardcore.

StoriesAndSweetPotatoes July 11, 2012 at 6:18 pm

You are a rockstar and that is one of my favorite quotes! It is SO true!

meg July 11, 2012 at 6:19 pm

Handstands ARE scary! I used to be able to do them no sweat, but I currently can’t! Great job facing your fears, and admitting that you were totally freaked out!

I think an ongoing fear for me is nursing school. Some days, I just don’t feel smart enough!

sophia July 11, 2012 at 6:27 pm

YAY Janetha!!!!! xD

I totally wimped out last friday. In Asheville, there’s a drum circle every Friday evening where people in the town gather at a park and beat drums and dance to the beat. I wanted to join in, but just stood by WRITING about it! ARGH! I missed my chance since I’m returning to LA this Friday, but if I visit again, I’m definitely stomping my way into that drum circle!

Janetha July 12, 2012 at 8:57 am

I can totally see you dancing to the beat. Next time, next time. Hope you are well, sweet girl!

Lauren July 11, 2012 at 6:28 pm

So I can sort of relate to this because yesterday, my trainer had me doing fully suspended pushups on the TRX bands. I was thinking to myself, “how in the world am I going to do 10 pushups with my feet and hands suspended in the air” but it actually wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. I’m always so impressed with myself when I do things that I never thought I could. Good for you girl, you rock those SLS!!!

Janetha July 12, 2012 at 8:57 am

I saw the photo of you! You are amazing!

Maren July 11, 2012 at 6:35 pm

You are not being dramatic! There are lots of things I’m scared of trying. Like running. I am SO scared my foot isn’t better. Most days I have zero foot pain, but sometimes it bothers me! I know it’s better (I saw the x-rays with no break), but I’m just SCARED. And maybe I just need to stop being a pussy…well obviously I need to stop being a pussy. So thank you. Thank you for showing me that even though some fears seem ridiculous to one person, they are a big deal to another…and it’s okay to FACE them!

Super proud of you! I need to move to SLC just so I can join GPP!!

Janetha July 12, 2012 at 9:00 am

COME TO SLCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC. now. please and thanks. and i loved what you said in your comment.

Sara July 11, 2012 at 6:36 pm

I rode not one, but THREE roller coasters with my daughters. My husband is 6′ 4″ and is too tall for a lot of rides with shoulder harnesses, so it was on me to go with them. I was PETRIFIED inside but I put on a brave face and screamed my head off around the loops!! Imagine my surprise when I figured out I was a) a roller coaster lover and b) a great role model for my girls.

Janetha July 12, 2012 at 9:00 am

That is amazing! Good job, I bet your girls really look up to you!

jen July 11, 2012 at 6:42 pm

That’s inspiring! I have to say I am also totally freaked out by handstands, but maybe if I was in a class like that and had help, I could make it happen, too.

Heather (Heather's Dish) July 11, 2012 at 7:19 pm

yay!!! i’m so glad you got over your fear and did the push-ups…awesome :) i’ve been doing Insanity lately which totally scares me sometimes but i’ve been fighting through and have totally started to see the difference in my body and strength! yay me :)

Nicole July 11, 2012 at 7:20 pm

I did an obstacle course/mud run. I was scared to death of the monkey bars. Silly, I know. I just couldn’t deal with failing and falling without making it across. Well, I made it! And I could have done more!
I want to try CrossFit, but I don’t want to go alone and I’m scared to death of box jumps. Like, full on panic attack when I’m standing in front of a box/step.

Janetha July 12, 2012 at 8:59 am

Monkey bars are on my life list. Maybe one of these days… Box jumps ARE scary! I did them today and always think I am gonna hit my shins.

Becky @ TheBexFactor.com July 11, 2012 at 7:26 pm

I’m glad that you went outside of your comfort zone, tried the HSPU and succeeded! Way to go!

I used to have a problem with handstands too and it felt amazing when I was able to get inverted on my own. I know how you felt.

At my Crossfit box, we can modify HSPU’s so that we have our feet hooked on a barbell on a rack which makes the actual pushup part easier.

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning July 11, 2012 at 7:35 pm

You are AMAZING. I love you and believe in you! And I love this!! Every detail of this post I love! And I SO relate to it! BUT- you have to hone in on that feeling of accomplishment. I’ve had so many fitness-related obstacles that TERRIFIED me. Running a 1/2 marathon. Rock climbing. Becoming a Bodypump instructor. Heck- teaching that first BP class! I was for sure I’d die during all of them- and guess what- I DIDN’T. And I’m a stronger person for it.
For the record, I can’t do handstands for sh*t. I’ve tried a few in the bootcamp workouts and basically have to walk up a wall to get there.
Congratulations girl!!

Amy Q July 11, 2012 at 7:55 pm

I also could NOT believe what we were being asked to do with the HSPU. But when I looked back on previous HSPU workouts, and saw that Neil said we should at least try to get inverted…..I also gave it a shot. I don’t think I was upright quite as straight as you….and my downward motion was probably even a fraction of yours, but I gave it effort, and next time, I’m hoping it’s better. I did have to walk up the wall to get there, thanks to Judy B’s advice. But usually even being upside down (sometimes even during a downward dog!) makes me dizzy and sickish- so this felt like a win to me that I did it 10 times in a row, even if it didn’t look much like the video! Congrats to you, Janetha!

I gotta admit– GPP is pretty cool. I almost think, 3 weeks in, I can see a triceps muscle??!

Krista July 11, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Ewwwwww…I hate being upside down too! It hurts my head and gives me a headache. Pretty sure my thoughts would have been similar to schmoopy’s. But good job to you for giving it a go and rocking the workout upside down!

Catherine July 11, 2012 at 9:12 pm

First off, awesome job.

Second, just wondering but what is/is there a substantive difference (besides the outrageous affiliate fee & moniker) btwn GPP & Crossfit. I’ve been a Crossfit devotee for a while now and it seems as if our workouts are pretty darn similar most days.
Just curious, thanks :)

Neil July 12, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Catherine, Do you mind if I stage this one?

The substantive difference is intention, purpose and programming.

We simply don’t care about fitness as a sport. We don’t care who the biggest, strongest and fastest is. Optimal health is our pursuit. Fitness is subject to optimal health. Unfortunately, there are too many who lose sight of this (inspired by those who value fitness and appearance only) and will sacrifice health to increase fitness.

We are minimalists. In other words, we won’t do one more rep than is necessary for our pursuit. We will do ALL that is necessary, but not one rep more. Our unique programming reflects this. Where others (CF and etc.) are trying to figure out what their max capacity is, we are only concerned with what our max capacity as a human is. We understand that amazing functionality and fitness contributes to our lives pursuits in very positive ways. We also understand that the pursuit of fitness to no end can take away from what is important.

As “similar” as they may look, the differences are night and day, in terms of our intention, our purpose and delivery.

As for the “Outrageous Fees.” Meh. At $100 per month we are more expensive than your local health club (who’s very intention is to get you to sign a contract, then go away!), but we’re WAY less expensive than it used to cost to train with me 5x per week. At $75 per session (about half an hour), it adds up.

The problem we keep having is, most of our 300 – 400 clients keep showing up every day and becoming incredibly healthy. If we could get them to stop doing that, go away and keep sending us money every month, we could decrease our prices, increase our membership base to several thousand and then make even more money. Wait – maybe THAT’s what would be outrageous!

Catherine July 13, 2012 at 6:23 am

Well, I guess that’s what I’m getting at… there isn’t a GPP on every block, so wouldn’t CF be a suitable alternative for the same(ish) price point (say ‘ish’ bc every gym/area is different)? Since, for example, the workout J talks about in this post we did exactly (well, 12 squats/leg each round).

Again, I know that each inidividual CF gym is going to vary bc there is no overarching control over programming, but that’s what it’s like where I’m at.

As for the fees, I was referring to the affiliate fee that the main CF org charges individual gyms to use their TM’d stuff. All together for a no-restrictions membership I pay $130/month (which is absolutely nothing compared to the fees from when I was a competitive dancer, so I guess I’m jaded in that regard).

Neil July 13, 2012 at 7:11 am

Catherine – Sounds like you may have stumbled onto one of the good ones. It’s weird, but every CF is different. Some are heavy into heavy. Others into the Oly lifts. Others into competition. Still others into endurance training. You can go to two that are just across the road from each other and they’ll have a different interpretation of what CF is. I’m sure it wouldn’t be unheard of to find a CF that parallels our thinking and programming. If you do, I believe you’ll do better there, unless your values are more closely matched with some of the above.

As for the fees, I sorta knew what you meant, but couldn’t help myself from taking a stab at a couple of pet peeves of mine. Forgive me.

Catherine July 13, 2012 at 7:25 am

It’s all good! I know what you mean, I’m moving soon and switching gyms is so much more personal than I’d ever realized!!
In the end, I think a lot of people can agree that a place where you can ‘push the edge’ is a beneficial place – and ‘the edge’ can be defined or not defined by whomever is doing the metaphorical pushing — like Janetha pushing her edge w HSPUs.

Candice July 11, 2012 at 9:53 pm

I knew you could do it! SO proud of you! Nick is amazing! He pushes himself harder every day! Very inspiring!

Sarah July 11, 2012 at 10:05 pm

You rock so so hard.

I would love to be able to do a pullup someday. Just one. You’ve made me think that maybe I can.

PS I have a cousin named Nick Phillips. He’s only 20. Quit texting him. ;)

Janetha July 12, 2012 at 8:56 am

What! hahahaha

amanda July 11, 2012 at 11:23 pm

I totally got goose bumps reading this post! I’m such a dork (and sap) but this was so amazing. Definitely makes me want to push myself. And I love that Henry Ford quotation you put it – so true, so true.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) July 12, 2012 at 12:04 am

So proud of you! Yes, it’s now so obvious that it was a mental block for you- you are wayyyyy strong enough to hold yourself up duh! It’s the fright that held you back. I remember you saying you don’t like group fitness and now you’re the belle of the ball over at GPP!! That’s something else you’ve over come- fear of the unknown perhaps?

I overcame fears of killing myself mountain biking. I also realize that I was really trying to be way too badass and of course if I did that i’d go endo’ing over the handlebars all the time. Once I decided it was OK just to ENJOY the ride, I stopped putting pressure on myself and stopped flying over the handlebars.

A current fear I’ve overcome is the fear of eating fats- about 5x what I used to do. So liberating I can’t even describe it.

STUFT Mama July 12, 2012 at 1:24 am

Well friend I just LOVE this post. You are awesome for conquering your fear and that handstand picture should definitely be framed and put up somewhere in your house. :)

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva July 12, 2012 at 2:40 am

Today I did something that I’ve been avoiding cuz I’ve been too scared. I stepped on the scales and weighed myself. I know over the past few months I’ve let my eating slide and was aware my pants were a bit too loose. But I avoided the scale like the plague because I didn’t want to have to face that number. Well today I did, and it’s not good!

I feel really ashamed that I let my weight drop so low again. It’s no wonder that I feel tired and sluggish and have lost my motivation for fitness. I feel like a failure for not looking after myself properly.

But instead of wallowing I made a call to a support centre who gave me the name of a doctor and dietitian who can help me. When I was speaking with the lady on the phone she said ‘Asking for help is often the hardest part, so you should be proud of yourself for taking this step’. And she’s right you know. I was scared, I didn’t want to do it, but I know I needed to.

Just like you found your self belief for fitness, today I found my self belief in recovering my health once more. I can because I think I can, but more importantly, because I’ve made the decision to try.

Thanks for this post :) xo

denise July 12, 2012 at 4:30 am

I am usually not afraid to do anything. Some crossfit workouts make me very nervous though.

Katie h. July 12, 2012 at 7:07 am

Way to go!!! You are awesome!!!

When I first joined gpp they told us that we had probably come because we wanted to work on our physical health, but along the way we would find out we were gaining fitness in other areas of health, not just physical. It’s totally true, and one of the reasons I love gpp. You start knocking down mental obstacles as you knock down physical obstacles.

Way to go, Janetha! That “top of the world” feeling is the best!!!!

Katie July 12, 2012 at 7:23 am

gah, I love this post so much!! You are so awesome and inspiring and I love you.

Marie July 12, 2012 at 8:19 am

RAH, JANETHA!!! THREE CHEERS FOR YOU!!!

I was terrified to take my 15-year-old cat to the vet for his checkup (because I am very attached to him and do not like to face the fact that he is old!!), but I did it anyway. He has a thyroid problem and arthritis, so it could’ve been worse. :-/

glidingcalm July 12, 2012 at 8:33 am

go Janetha go! I carry a similar mindset since my skating years…when many moves literally scared me half-to-death. I would say NO NO NO, I’m not gong to try it… or nope, I can’t do that! ….And unfortunately, I still am very self-conscious and rough on myself today….constantly doubting myself….and that’s one thing that has been very hard for me to shake! Thanks for always inspiring! love you!

julie July 12, 2012 at 8:52 am

yayyyyyyy! that’s super exciting! i’m so happy for you! i would love to do a handstand haha or even a somersault – i feel like i would break my neck hahaah

LG July 12, 2012 at 9:03 am

Good for you for doing something scary! Last thing I did like that was actually DOING payroll after taking the courses. As you probably know, it’s do or die with payroll…you just have to SEND IT at some point! Gahh. It’s still quite scary, but I feel like I’m getting the hang of it. Praise the Lord. :0)

Bonnie July 12, 2012 at 9:25 am

AWESOME job, Janetha! I am so proud of you for going…I know that sick, pit of the stomach feeling (who doesn’t! not from workouts but other life events) and facing fears is TOUGH. You have the strength to do that move – I didn’t doubt that for a second – but you have to have the mental strength to make it happen – and you did! So great. :D

How am I stepping out of my comfort zone? I volunteered to sub for 2 classes next week at the gym (plyo cardio) and am teaching 2 boot camp classes as well. It’s a stretch because while I love and am comfortable in small groups, I’m not so much a yell/pump up kind of trainer and that makes me doubt my effectiveness in a group class setting where energy’s needed. I actually doubt my training abilities a lot (too much) and have been working on that confidence.

Thanks for bringing these thoughts to mind – bring it on, classes, bring it on. :)

WAY TO GO!!! Proud of ya! It takes a LOT to suck it up and try to overcome a fear, so this rocks!!

I actually like handstands—-but I am a dancer and was a gymnast, so being upside down is not a big deal. But there are other things I need to get over. Like biking long distances…and since the half IM is in Aug, I’d say I am stepping right out there where it’s NOT comfortable. But that IS where the magic is.

Great story!!!

Whooo! Congrats! I have zero upper body strength, but you’ve inspired me to really work on it! I can barely cross the monkey bars let alone do a handstand, but it’s going to be my goal to do so before summer ends! (:

Good for you! That’s awesome. I can relate in the form of headstands in yoga. Every time they would come up I would just go into childs pose or just do a tripod. I actually did kick the instructor one time, which was horrifying, but then one day I tried to do one on my own and I held it for like, 8 seconds! I haven’t done one again in forever, but I was so proud of myself that day.

Aww, I’m SO proud of you, Janetha! And yah, I’d be scared too! Esp after reading Schmoopy’s comment, lol

You just flat out rule, J. Thanks so much for sharing this post!

I’ve been trying to do pullups, but it’s a slow go. I did some handstands during ashtanga but have never tried a hspu… now I kind of want to, but I’m definitely scared! I totally agree with and absolutely love the quote. Our beliefs are powerful little buggers!

Thanks, too, for sharing that info about the proprioception as it relates to handstands. I hadn’t made that connection, but it makes me eager to get back to handstands, whether or not I add in the push-ups part (which of course you know I’m going to have to try!)

xoxo
