last week i made miniature vegan gluten free peanut butter dark chocolate chip protein cookies.
wow, that’s a long name. they were delicious.
they had no flour. the flour was replaced with a secret ingredient… that is about to no longer be a secret.. as soon as i type the ingredient list below. or i could just tell you now:
garbanzo beans.
whelp, i guess the cat’s outta the bag! who made that saying up, anyway? why was the cat in the bag in the first place? that’s a horrible place for a cat to be.
another saying i really love and said the other day is “pleased as punch!” that’s such a good saying! my friend amanda thought it was weird. i guess she’s right.. but i still like it. i just wonder where it came from? i could google it.. but i am lazy.
my friend neil said “hornswoggled” to me the other day. um.. what? that’s a new one i’d never heard. when i asked him what it meant, he proceeded to tell me that “it’s the same thing as buffaloed!” OH. OF COURSE! BUFFALOED! wait, no.. that explanation didn’t do me any favors. i’d never heard “hornswoggled” OR “buffaloed”. but apparently they both mean “bamboozled”–which is definitely a saying i can get behind.
“i can get behind” is one of my favorite phrases as well.. “i can get behind” is something i can get behind.
oddly enough, my mom and i had a text conversation today that had me thinking about ANOTHER common saying:
don’t mind the bit about us being perfect. my mom and i are pretty sarcastic with each other at all times. but really–“fit as a fiddle”? what makes fiddles so fit? we decided flutes are more fit. they are long and thin.
other sayings i wonder about?
- “a stitch in time saves nine.”
- “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”
- “close but no cigar.”
where did they all come from?!?
okay, okay, enough about random idioms. i could go on and on, really, so i will stop myself now. that whole tangent honestly came out of nowhere and i had no intention of talking about any of that. i was just going to post a cookie recipe tonight and call it good–then that word vomit came pouring out of my fingertips. hmmm. i never said i was normal.
back to the cookies!
prep time: 10 minutes
bake time: 10-12 minutes per sheet
yield: about 4 dozen miniature cookies
ingredients
- 15 oz can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed VERY well
- 3 servings plant fusion vanilla bean protein powder (or other vanilla protein powder of choice–this is the one i like to bake with)
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 TB vanilla bean paste or extract
- 1 TB agave (i used xagave)
- 4 packets stevia in the raw (or equivalent sweetener of choice)
- dash of sea salt
- 2 – 3 TB almond milk (or milk of choice.. water would work, too)
- 2/3 cup dark chocolate chips
directions
- preheat oven to 375* F. line a cookie sheet with a silicone mat, parchment paper, or cooking spray.
- place rinsed beans in a food processor and process until they are a thick paste.
- add protein powder, peanut butter, vanilla, agave, stevia, and sea salt to food processor. pulse until everything is just combined.
- slowly add the almond milk until mixture reaches a doughy consistency.
- remove dough from food processor and fold in chocolate chips.
- use a 1 TB cookie scoop to measure out dough onto cookie sheet.
- bake for 10-12 minutes. cookies will not spread much.
- immediately after removing cookies from oven, gently press down on each one with a spatula to flatten them out a bit.
- let cookies cool completely before eating. store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

i fed these to my co-workers at work and co-worker-outers at GPP and nobody guessed they contained garbanzo beans. marshall hates garbanzo beans and even he liked the cookies. it was a fun experiment and i can’t wait to use beans in more baked goods!
eat a few of these and you’ll be in seventh heaven…

Also….don’t look a gift horse in the mouth comes from back in the day. Horses were judged on their health or strength or something by their teeth or mouth…or something. So if someone was giving you a horse, you shouldn’t check out it’s mouth, you should just accept it.

I, too, work in construction and something we say a lot is “tube locked” or “two blocked.” No one knows which way it’s supposed to be but they both come out the same. We also don’t know what it refers to exactly, except to say that we’re stuck between a rock and a hard spot. Ha! See what I did there? I used an idiom to explain another idiom. Now I kind of feel like an idiom.
When I first started dating my husband, he said the phrase “they’re in cahoots.” First I laughed, then told him he was so weird, and continued to laugh for the next few days. Apparently, it IS a real phrase! Wild.
I’m totally in stitches over this rant….there aren’t enough smiley faces to do it justice :) !!!
Does “getting up at the butt crack of dawn” count?!?!

Carly is totally right about the gift horse thing. If you’re getting a horse for free, it’s not nice to look it over in front of the person gifting it and be like “hmmm…is this good enough?” If it’s a gift, just take it!
As far as “a stitch in time saves nine” I think it’s basically telling you to slow down and do things right the first time. If you take your time to do a stitch correctly, then you won’t have to go back and undo it later to fix things…and undo all the work you did after that one bad stitch?
This is more of a colloquialism than an idiom….but I love the saying ‘shut the front door’…as a saying ‘no way’. Love Love love the cookie recipe. I’ve made black bean protein brownies with great success so no doubt these will be delish
How about “that’s bass ackwards” or “ass backwards.” Isn’t the ass supposed to be in the back? So how is that backwards? Now if it was in the front, THAT would be bass ackwards. And odd.
I don’t wanna sound like a smarty-pants but I actually do know the origin of “close but no cigar” :)
Men used to celebrate the birth of their children with cigars (I guess some still might). When they were waiting for their wives to deliver, they would wait in the waiting area and rarely, if ever, were present in the delivery room. If friends and family would ask them if their child had been born yet, instead of just saying no, they would say “close but no cigar”, meaning it wasn’t time to celebrate yet. I hope that makes sense to you lol. I tried to explain it the best way I could :)

I’ve heard that cigars were handed out at carnivals as game prizes back in the day, so if they were playing ring toss or something and didn’t win, the announcer would say “close, but no cigar.”
But, really, who knows any of these for sure?

Cute post. Teeth give away a horses age. The saying “never look a gift horse in the mouth” means that if someone gives you a horse as a gift, don’t be rude and check it’s teeth to see how old it is. Like looking for a price tag or something.

The best part about these cookies is that they look like raw cookie dough which I’m always on board with. I’ve made cookies with cannellini beans before so I have full confidence these will be amazing.

The only thing I can think of when I read hornswoggle is from Friends… Ross gets a date with Elizabeth Hornswoggle and Chandler’s resolution is to not make fun so he can’t tease him. Bamboozled also reminds me of the game show Joey is practicing for with Chandler and Ross.

Here’s something to ponder: the word “back.” Not an idiom but it is weird. I was driving behind a cement truck that said “help me back safely.” Like, help me back up safely? Help me get back home safely? (I was stuck in traffic stuck staring at this message which led to this….) We have backs – you can go back – as in return – we can back up – return upwards? What does that mean? You can back someone up with their story or whatever – back someone financially. My thoughts went on and on in this manner. This is why I stopped driving to work – I was going crazy trying to understand the word “back”. Go ahead and judge me, I know this is insanity speaking

Yummmm garbanzo bean flour is currently my favorite flour to bake with! I first tried it as my “April Adventure” with you, and those cookies were such a hit, I’ve been making them over and over. Everyone loves them and no one suspects BEANS!
Hornswaggle reminds me of the “Friends” episode, where Ross dates an Elizabeth Hornswaggle, and Chandler calls her a character from Fraggle Rock. :)

Haha, oh god idioms…there are so many I use or hear…son of a gun, your barking up the wrong tree, and close but no cigar…Who makes these up? So ridiculous. These look tasty! I’ve seen the garbanzo bean blondies before, but not cookies. I’m always hesitant to try the beans in baked goods recipe for some reason, but I do love dessert hummus!
My dad randomly bought garbanzo beans for a salad just saturday and only ate like half the can I may just try to make these!
