recent discoveries.

by Janetha on June 26, 2012

in dogs,random rambles

i’ve had a few discoveries lately. nothing huge like a columbus-discovering-the-world-wasn’t-flat kind of discovery.. but discoveries nonetheless.

my costco now carries baby kale.

i was so excited to see this! well, first i was really sad because i discovered that costco didn’t have the individual packages of baby carrots i like to buy. but then my sadness turned to glee when i saw this huge bag of kale! and it’s organic!

IMG 3687

YES. kale in bulk. that’ll be such a money saver. we go through a lot of kale because marshall makes a big batch of juice in the vitamix each morning. he brings it to me while i am getting ready for work.

image

the fact that he is such a stellar catch is no recent discovery, that’s for sure. what a guy.

now if only costco would start carrying unsweetened vanilla almond milk…

taking walks at work is beneficial all around.

amanda, kerryne, and i have decided to take 20 minute walks every afternoon. 10 minutes away from the office and 10 minutes back. we all sit for eight hours a day, staring at a computer monitor, never to see the sunlight. it’s BAD for us. real bad. walks are good.  we can only take 20 minute walks because leaving the office is usually unheard of. yes, we are the type of people who have to eat lunch at our desks and work straight through each bite. it works, though, because we only work eight hours and not 8.5 or anything like that.

anyway, yesterday was walk #1 and of course amanda and i forgot our walking shoes, but kerryne brought us flip flops. we remembered our shoes today, though, and as luck would have it our walking shoes matched our outfits today! pink and blue!

imageimage

it was windy. and kerryne was missing. she was out sick. sad.

but seriously, these walks? super beneficial!

  • we get a little exercise.
  • it wakes us up from the afternoon slump.
  • we get some sunshine in our lives.
  • we get to chat about randomness which is good for mental health.
  • we laugh. laughing is healthy!

i am soooo glad we’ve decided to walk each afternoon!

victoria’s secret has awesome racerback bras.

i was in the market for a racerback bra. my friend, michelle, is a bra dealer. she was working today when i got off work. PERFECT!

i’d never been measured for a bra before, but when it’s one of your best friends doing the measuring.. it’s really not a bad experience at all! she used her expertise and i walked out of there with this little number (and yes, i mean little.. my boobs are almost nonexistent!)

NewImage source: victoriassecret.com

mine is black. and my back does not look nearly that sexy. but you get the drift.

thanks for your help, michelle. love you lots.

randy likes onions!

this dog. i tell you. he hates popcorn. hates it! he will accidentally eat a piece of popcorn (like if we throw it at his face) and he will actually spit it out because he just hates it so much. so strange.. whose dog hates popcorn?! my dog, that’s whose.

anyway, marshall was being the fantastic husband that he is and was making spaghetti for dinner last night. he was chopping onions and randy was looking at him with those big ol’ puppy dog eyes.

 IMG 3671

marshall decided to give randy a piece of onion to show him that it wasn’t anything he wanted (and so he would stop begging) and much to our surprise.. he ate the onion.

IMG 3676

we gave him a few more bits and he gobbled them up. he was loving it! penny wanted nothing to do with the onions and was wondering why nobody would give her some cheese. that girl loves cheese.

but randy? we’ll just call him onion breath.

IMG 3680

edited to add: a few of you told me onions are bad for dogs. thanks for the warning! the onion photographed above was randy’s first and last onion. we will stick to peanut butter.

Qs~

1. what was your latest discovery—big or small?

2. if you could pick one item to be able to buy in bulk, what would it be?

StoriesAndSweetPotatoes June 26, 2012 at 8:29 pm

Getting up and walking around from a sitting job is the best, even just for your sanity!

Cat @ Breakfast to Bed June 26, 2012 at 8:29 pm

2 things, a: I’m president of the IBTC (itty bitty t–ty committee) you’re welcome to join.

B:my vet told me onions, esp raw, are super bad for doggies. I hate to be a preachy commenter. Plz, feel free to kick my ace in my comments anytime.

Janetha June 26, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Preach away! I think it’s good–I had NO idea. Thank you!!

Ashley June 27, 2012 at 8:45 am

Second everything here – I’m also a member and keep your pups away from onions! (And grapes, for that matter :-) )

Sarah June 26, 2012 at 8:39 pm

I love your dogs!! But I have to tell you that onions are supposedly very poisonous for dogs. I would hate for them to get sick!

My dogs do the same things..super sweet puppy eyes everytime I am in the kitchen.

Janetha June 26, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Thank you!! Won’t give them to him ever again!!!

Neil June 26, 2012 at 8:40 pm

haha, I’ve seen dogs eat their own poo. I would think they’d PREFER an onion.

Also, hoping I’ll never need to be fitted for a bra. It’s one of the thoughts that keeps me working out consistently.

You’ve got a good man.

Janetha June 26, 2012 at 9:06 pm

I am glad you don’t have moobs. That would be weird…

Kerryne June 26, 2012 at 8:46 pm

Sad I missed our walk today… looking forward to it tomorrow… I think ;) Still feeling a little “off” but I am a trooper!

Janetha June 26, 2012 at 9:06 pm

We were sad, too. We gossiped about you the whoooole time ;) Still feeling up for girls’ night in tomorrow?

Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile June 26, 2012 at 8:47 pm

My costco carries organic spinach which I love, but I need to find the kale! I really wish they carried unsweetened almond milk too. And friendship 1% cottage cheese. I go through that stuff too fast for the high price. My dog hates peanut butter. I feel like he is the only dog in the whole entire world that hates it.

Janetha June 26, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Oh. Wow. yes.. yes that has to be the ONLY dog who doesn’t like PB! I thought popcorn was weird, but PB! I thought all dogs loved it.

Liliana June 26, 2012 at 8:49 pm

Jentha, while not all dogs get sick, onions are supposed to be toxic to dogs; like with chocolate, not all dogs get sick from eating it.

Janetha June 26, 2012 at 9:04 pm

Thank you! Edited the post to reflect this new knowledge.

Gina @ Running to the Kitchen June 26, 2012 at 8:52 pm

I can so relate to the VS bra thing. I went in last week, decided on a whim to get measured for real this time and found out I’ve been wearing the wrong size for oh, the past 15 years or so. I left $200+ poorer with 4 bras (2 racerbacks, love!) but a completely different outlook on my boobs. ha!

Janetha June 26, 2012 at 9:03 pm

hahaha that’s a great story!

SpaceySteph June 29, 2012 at 7:12 pm

This actually came up at a family holiday dinner a few years back. Apparently most women wear the wrong bra size and it can cause back problems if you have big boobs. My grandfather lectured us all about it. And apparently there was an Oprah special.

Oh, my dad and grandfather are both gynecologists. My cousin (her dad is not a gyno) was totally mortified but the rest of us thought it was business as usual.

Ash B June 26, 2012 at 8:53 pm

I take an hour nap in my car at lunch. Well, only on the days I’m not working through. Lately it’s been 7:45 to 6. I get a little sunshine in at the end of the day. Notso bad.

That Costco kale goes bad quickly. Mine started carrying it a couple months ago. I use it three days in a row and bam, bad.

I recently discovered an organic farm up the road from my country bumpkin office. All I need to do is call ahead and they will literally pick my veggies on the drive over. Pretty nifty.

Emily R June 26, 2012 at 8:56 pm

Latest discovery: roasted broccoli with a little olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and garlic is AMAZING. I eat this practically every night.

my coworkers and I have also started walking every day at lunchtime. sitting is totally killing us. hoping 20-30 minutes of walking a day helps combat that a little!

CheezyK June 26, 2012 at 9:01 pm

I see others have mentioned the onion toxicity thing so won’t go into that …

Our dogs will both eat almost anything, unless it’s green (naturally green that is, moldy green on the other hand is apparently fantastic)! We even thought we’d tricked our big boy once with a piece of Big Mac (no comment on why we had one in the house in the first place!), he scoffed it down and we grinned at each other thinking we’d tricked him into a piece of lettuce … right up until he spat it out on the floor. He’d somehow dismantled the thing in his mouth, removed the lettuce, swallowed the rest and then spat the lettuce out!

Card holding member of the IBTC here – that racerback looks gorgeous!

Janetha June 26, 2012 at 9:03 pm

Oh my gosh! That’s too funny about the lettuce!

Ashley June 26, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Holy smokes lady, you have awesome shoulders in that pic! If that is gpp fitness results I am jealous I don’t live in Utah!

Giselle Schroer June 26, 2012 at 9:18 pm

I was so excited when my Costco started carrying the baby kale too! We just had it for dinner in a salad :-) My Costco carries unsweetened vanilla almond milk so maybe yours will start soon too :-) I wish that Costco carried the coconut water I like. I’m a fan of Naked or Zico but not the one they currently have at Costco :-(

Whitney @ Whit Likes Fit June 26, 2012 at 9:36 pm

I was pumped about the kale but it went bad fast and it didn’t make as good of kale chips as the normal kale I use (mine is curlier) and I would love it if they carried vanilla unsweetened almond milk. I’d also love it if they’d carry a better bulk peanut butter…like a Justin’s or something.

Sana June 26, 2012 at 10:21 pm

I teach a walking class at the University I used to attend, all the staff workers LOVE taking a walking break! We do squats and lunges while we walk :)

@pluvk June 27, 2012 at 1:10 am

Awww… our Costco doesn’t sell baby kale. :-( But it DOES sell unsweetened almond milk! :-) My answer for buying in bulk would definitely be lettuce and grapes. We go through A LOT of both in our 2-person household.

Heather @ Fit Mama Real Food June 27, 2012 at 2:38 am

Kale at costco!? Sold!

I used to take morning + afternoon walks when inwas working. It seriously made the day go by faster + made me feel so much better. Plus I love getting the extra exercise!

Lauren June 27, 2012 at 4:44 am

Oh so awesome that VS has racer backs. Until now, I was using safety pins to make my own.

Miranda June 27, 2012 at 4:56 am

Onions are bad for dogs in LARGE quantities! Randy would have to eat 4 or 5 raw onions a DAY for weeks to see any negative results. We tell people that because it’s easier to say “don’t give your dog onions because they are bad for them” than to say “don’t let your dog eat lots of raw onions every day, because eventually you’ll probably see something bad”.

Something actually really bad for dogs in small quantities: avocado! who knew.

finally, your dogs are just too cute!!

Alex @ therunwithin June 27, 2012 at 6:21 am

that bra looks comfortable! I have never seen that back there.

Amalia June 27, 2012 at 6:51 am

My local Costco just started carrying Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla! 6 quarts for $8.99. Check again next time you go.

April June 27, 2012 at 7:06 am

You are so right about the walking- I work at a university so I have the best and most scenic place for walking in the whole damn city and when I don’t walk, I feel like a sleepy mess by 4 p.m.!

That’s so crazy that you guys don’t get a lunch break. I guess it means getting off a little earlier than most people since you don’t have to build in an hour into the middle of the day! But still crazy that it’s rarely an option!

tj June 27, 2012 at 7:32 am

I hate that all Costcos are not stocked the same! I have to go to one for organic spinach and the other for Fage 0%! :-/

Oh & next time you go to Trader Joe’s they carry Unsweetened vanilla almond milk- their own brand- and it’s on the shelf so you can stock up the pantry! :)

Jess @ Blonde Ponytail June 27, 2012 at 7:55 am

Knowing your love of all things miniature, that kale didn’t stand a chance! ;) Racerbacks are my fav! I must check into these!!

Bridget @ Type A Frame Personality June 27, 2012 at 8:07 am

I love walking at lunch too when its not to terribly hot out. It totally helps to get the blood flowing. My dog kooli bear HATES pickles. She will eat anything in the world, but if you give her a pickle she spits it out very dramatically like you have just poisoned her!

Theodora June 27, 2012 at 8:08 am

That’s awesome that you’re walking while at work. I usually work at least 10 hours a day, but three days a week, I go home and walk Bailey at lunch. That’s obviously the best 25ish minutes of my day those days.

Also, I would buy bananas in bulk. If they didn’t go bad so quickly.

Betty June 27, 2012 at 8:38 am

I didn’t know that about onions! Scout LOVES sweet potatoes, so I hope those are bad for him! Yogi and ace will beg all day for edamame shells, too. Crazy pooches! Hope you’re doing well!

janetha @ meals & moves June 27, 2012 at 8:50 am

No, I think SPs are ok! The food we feed the pups is SP and fish, so yeah.. Miss you! Love you!

Hayley June 27, 2012 at 11:56 am

my dog is obsessed with sweet potatoes too! literally drools all over the kitchen while i’m chopping them up

LG June 27, 2012 at 8:46 am

Hey J!

Due to your interest in fitness, I thought you might enjoy this online quiz just for fun: http://getfitguy.com/questionnaires/index.html

I just printed off a few sample workouts for my body type and want to give them a try…

janetha @ meals & moves June 27, 2012 at 8:49 am

Cool I will check it out!

ali June 27, 2012 at 9:17 am

My latest discovery would have to be Chobani! But you’ve heard all about that! AND, I would have to say I would buy Chobani in bulk! LOL! Now that I have Carl and Tyson hooked on it, I can’t keep it in the house! I’m buying tons of it every few days! btw, I stopped and said hi to Em in the Chobani bus at the arts fest :)

Love the walks every afternoon. I should start doing that too. Especially, since I work downtown. Lots to see!

Have a great day!

Kait @ yogabeautylife June 27, 2012 at 9:39 am

So many recent discoveries since I’ve spent the last two weeks exploring my new city!

1) There are tons of good beer bars in the area.
2) I shouldn’t listen to everything people tell me re: parts of Baltimore.
3) The light rail is neither slow nor inconvenient. In fact, I kind of love it.
4) There are lots of veg-friendly restaurants in the area. :)

kelli preston June 27, 2012 at 9:43 am

biggest discovery = limeade. really good in green smoothies!

Sierra June 27, 2012 at 9:54 am

Our yorkie also LOVES veggies, especially crunchy ones like snap peas and corn. We buy roasted chicken and she loves the BBQ flavor. She has such a human palate, it cracks us up.

Recent discovery is a new local creamery…I have dreams about their ice cream.

Claire @ Live and Love to Eat June 27, 2012 at 10:08 am

I’ve enjoyed walking so much at lunchtime that last week I tried running a few times – being sweaty the rest of the day = notsogood.

Shaunna@mamas13minutemile June 27, 2012 at 10:13 am

MJ (my dog) tries to eat onions too but yes they are bad for the pooches! :)

I am glad you are able to get out to walk at work. I also sit in a windowless office and my work bud and I walk on our 30 minute lunches…it is so nice.

Christina June 27, 2012 at 10:23 am

Is it bad that I now want to go to Costco’s to see if our’s carries the baby kale? So obsessed lol.

And yes, glad you’ll be sticking to PB for the pup! Onions are SO bad for them! Also, dogs can eat corn but the COB is toxic for them! My neighbors dog died because he ate the cob but my dog absolutely loves corn.

Annette@FitnessPerks June 27, 2012 at 10:28 am

LOVE the idea of a walk!! I totally do that too-makes me feel alive and happy, and not ‘stuck’ inside!

I’d like a racerback, might have to hit up VS soon!

Katie @ Peace Love & Oats June 27, 2012 at 11:22 am

that’s a great idea to get up and take a walk. I try and do that too if I get the chance! I hate sitting at this desk all day… haha I’m actually excited for school to start back up.

Lindsay @ LindsayInNYC June 27, 2012 at 11:23 am

That’s hilarious – my dog is OBSESSED with popcorn! Really, anything corn but especially corn on the cob and popcorn.

Erica June 27, 2012 at 11:32 am

Totally picking up Kale at costco! Whoop! I got measured a while back for a bra…but I think I need to get re-measured. Babies make your boobs change for sure. Onions are bad for dogs? I had no idea.

Liz @ Southern Charm June 27, 2012 at 1:25 pm

That muscle milk tastes AMAZING in my coffee!!

Milk doesn’t love me and I wanted to kick up my protein in-take. It’s perfect :)

nicole June 27, 2012 at 2:28 pm

Hi! We don’t have a Costco :( but I’d love kale in bulk.

PS What’s in your green smoothie – sorry if I missed it somewhere on here, I’m a newer reader =)

Janetha June 27, 2012 at 2:31 pm

Hey Nicole! Thanks for reading. It’s actually not a smoothie–it’s juice that my husband makes each day. I never know what will be in it, but here are some ingredients he uses: apples, kale, spinach, cucumber, celery, carrots, pears, OJ, POM juice

It’s a great way to start the day :)

nicole June 27, 2012 at 2:39 pm

mmm thanks Janetha – I just started making green juices (sorry not smoothies :D ) so I was looking to branch out from my norm. PS Randy is adorable!

Janetha June 27, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Thanks! I will tell him you said that :D I know that spabettie.com has some awesome juicing recipes!

lindsay June 27, 2012 at 4:08 pm

whoa, you look HOT JG. Marshall, watch out! Sexy wifey!

I recently discovered I have a virus on my computer. Doh!

marci June 27, 2012 at 4:29 pm

What type of Green smoothies do you make? Do you find they helo with your digestion?

Janetha June 27, 2012 at 4:47 pm

Hi Marci,

This is just blended juice.. I think it had kale, spinach, apples, carrots, celery, and OJ. My husband makes them different every morning.

Nope, they don’t help with my digestion. But they are healthy, taste good, and I like them! They DO help with my husband’s digestion, but his colon is not lazy like mine.

Lisa June 27, 2012 at 5:05 pm

BABY kale! Too funny! I’m growing kale in my garden and I have tons. In fact, I wrote a post today about the kale chips I made recently. so good.

KaraHadley June 27, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Walks are so important when you work in an office! And I freaking LOVE baby kale. It’s so much more convenient than regular kale.

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats June 27, 2012 at 6:57 pm

Love that Marshall brings you fresh juice while you get ready! That is so rad. :) My latest discovery is that the Starbucks near my apartment is open until 11:30 PM. It rocks considering I am trying to get some routine in my life with working night shift. It is definitely a different crowd in here at night!

BroccoliHut June 27, 2012 at 7:38 pm

Well now I MUST go to Costco this weekend, although it will likely be a madhouse for the holiday weekend. I feel the same way about the almond milk–I would be so happy if they carried the unsweetened kind!

meggi June 27, 2012 at 9:31 pm

Ha! That’s hilarious that he likes onions! My pup adores spinach! Whenever we drop some on accident, she hoards it! She will lay on top of it so we don’t know she has it. Ridiculous.

Katie June 27, 2012 at 9:33 pm

I realllllly need to get fitted for a bra. In the last year I’ve gone from huge milk-filled-melons to non-existent little twelve year old ta-tas. It just needs to happen.

I used to take afternoon walks with my co-workers and LOVED it. I kind of miss it, actually.

Carly June 28, 2012 at 9:10 am

Well as far as the boob situation goes, like I always say, can’t have it all(: haha I’m really little too and fit so my boobs are nonexistent either, my friends alway make fun a my pushup bras because they are always in bright colors (I can never find a good practical bra that’s pushup, but that one looks good!) and yes this comment was entirely about boobs, sorry about that
