marshall had to work today.
lame.
but that means i got up with him, because i just did, i should have kept sleeping.. but i woke up and was up and that was the end of it.
i took advantage of my morning and cleaned the whole kitchen, folded all the laundry, and straightened up all rooms of the house. all before 10:00 AM. hmm.
i ate two bowls of cereal and a slice of sourdough toast with raspberry jam and caught up on my google reader.
i looked at pinterest. i looked at facebook. i looked at twitter. i looked bored. so i looked at the dogs.
marshall had asked me to take them on a jaunt while he was at work, so i decided to throw on my vibrams, grab their leashes, and head out on a jaunt.
we walked and walked and walked. well, randy stopped and stopped and stopped. he did NOT want to take a walk. he’s usually a tad stubborn on walks, but he will usually get a skip in his step after a few minutes. today’s walk? no skippin’ whatsoever.
i coaxed him along as much as i could. i told him there would be treats when we got home. and his favorite chair! i begged and pleaded for him to just walk. but he kept stopping dead in his tracks. i’m just sorry i didn’t have my camera. he would stop, freeze, and stare at the ground. i would tug on his leash a bit, which i am sure led all the cars passing to believe i am an asshole dog owner who drags her dog by the leash, but he still wouldn’t budge.
so we stopped a lot. and penny wondered why. i told her randy is old. i told her randy is tired. she just looked at me like, “what the heck, ma, let’s do the damn thing!”
we FINALLY made it home.. after what seemed like a century.. and randy headed STRAIGHT to the water bowl.
the bowl doesn’t lie. he sure was thirsty.
he wouldn’t even let penny get a sip in edgewise.
and then guess what happened? no, he didn’t go to his favorite chair to pass out. he didn’t make it that far.
he flopped down right here.

and he’s still there. snoring.
i used mapmyrun.com (let’s face it, it should be called mapmyveryslowwalk.com) to see how far i dragged randy. er–i mean–how far we walked.
3.5 miles. that’s actually a lot farther than i thought!
i want you to take a guess how long it took penny, randy, and me to walk 3.5 miles today.
here are a few things to take into consideration when estimating:
- it was nice and cool with a slight breeze
- it was all on flat, level ground
- the terrain was a mix of grass and sidewalk depending on our location
- the pups have not been to daycare since last wednesday, so they were VERY well rested
- randy’s legs are roughly 8 inches long
- penny did not get tired at all, ever
- i did not get tired at all, ever
so.. how long do you think our walk took?

Awww, poor Randy!! 3.5 miles is a long way to go when you have little legs. I would know. Hope he is reset up and ready for his next drag. I mean walk.
Hmmm typically when Charlie and I go for a 3 mile walk, it takes us 45 minutes and we’re walking pretty briskly. I’m going to go with an hour and a half.
Haha, that reminds me of someone in my neighborhood who has a VERY large bulldog. Whenever he takes him for a walk, the dog stops and lays down on his side in the grass, probably every 20 steps or so. Needless to say, he doesn’t go for walks very often :-) It’s funny to watch though!
Hmmmm 53 minutes.. I feel your pain when a basset doesn’t want to cooperate
i would say 1 hr and 15 min?! we do 3.5 miles briskly… i have 2 labs, but i remember when i was growing up, our basset was slow as molasses!

My guess, 1 hour 18 minutes ;) your dogs crack me up! That’s how I have felt after work all week, the kitchen floor would have been perfectly fine for me as well!

aww poor Randy! it is funny how dogs love that cold tile floor. our sisters dog does the same thing, after walks he lays down on the tile.

So funny!! The plight of the basset! :) I’m guessing 90 minutes.
Guinness has the same bowls! Maybe check him for bloat or other bassety issues. When guinny is very thirsty sometimes it means he isn’t feeling well, ESP since Randy didn’t enjoy his play time. Hope he feels better!
oh my gosh- I heart Randy. he is SO darn cute. Frank isn’t much of a walker either.

Poor Randy, I completely understand. I have an older dog too who is stubborn on walks and my younger one is always wondering why we are walking so slow and taking so many brakes.

bahahha! I feel ya! my pup did 4 miles while i biked this morning and you would have thought i sent her to bootcamp for a week. randy probably had a case of the saturdays! I’m going to guess that those 3.5 miles took a good 2 hours. Mine can take a whole half hour to get her butt around the block.

hehe, my dog has gotten notorious for wanting to stop and sniff everything in sight. It can be so frustrating! Poor Randy…you tuckered him out! :) I am going to guess 2 1/2 hours.

48 minutes. My beagle, Abbie, used to stop and lie down every half mile. I literally dragged her home on more than one occasion. But if they were focused, I’m sure you did it between 35 and 55 minutes. Of course, throw in a squirrel or something dead, things could change drastically.

I love the pictures of him at the water bowl! My (3 year old) dog and I walk a mile in about 20 minutes when he’s starting to drag. So…a little over an hour?

I’m guessing about 2 hours…I actually have no idea though! My boyfriend has a huge british bulldog that is a lot like randy. On a walk it’s his way or the highway! He tires out pretty quick and when that happens he just stops dead in his tracks. No budging until he feels like it. I remember once we were crossing a busy road when he decided he’d had enough. He literally lay down right in the middle of the street!!! Cars stopped, and I pulled but to no avail. I ended up having to pick up this 30kg dog and walk him to the other side of the road. It was so embarrassing!

Poor Randy! Our big dog will stop, sit & just look at me. He refuses to go down certain roads. It’s so so weird.
I’m guessing 2 hours 44 minutes :) When my youngest Beagle (I have 2!) was a puppy, she’d just stop walking and sit in the middle of the sidewalk, like… hello, “I’m done, people!!!” and we’d have to carry her the rest of the way home. But, now they’re turning into pretty good running partners :)
Haha! This is too cute. Sammy does the same thing when we get back from long walks. Anything more than a mile and he completely goes comatose! :)
My dogs are usually dragging me! I can’t walk them together any more because they weigh over 140 lbs. combined and can knock me down! Maybe if the mellow out I’ll be able to, but for now, they try to dart off at every squirrel and bunny they see. One at a time is somewhat more manageable… but they always want to RUN.
I can totally picture your walk though… I love narrating the dogs thoughts. :) I speak for mine ALL THE TIME.
I’d go with an hour and a half. The fact that you went 3.5 miles with a dog that didn’t want to walk at all is very impressive!
Based on how long it takes my slow pup to walk that long I’m going to say 2 hours!!
That is a super funny, supper cute story. I am going to say it took you about 65 minutes to do the full 3.5 mile walk/run.
Haha, I know how Randy feels! I did a 5k yesterday and had to walk because of my darn hip. I came home and passed out on the bed as if I had just run a marathon. Pathetic!
I think I have made that exact fact Randy has made and lied down on the floor just like that :D It feels kinda good. Although when I do it, my cat worries that I am dead and comes over to check my vital signs. And once she can tell I am breathing she is very happy I am on the floor and lies down to sleep directly on top of my chest.
best story ever! having 2 bassett’s and 1 who likes to stop A LOT i will say it took 2 hours. flash pulls that all the time…..she’s really bad while at the dog park and not on a leash. whiskey will be way ahead but i have to wait for flash to catch up so she doesn’t lose site of me (i will say that liver treats usually help) randy is sooooooo cute
At least he’ll walk. My little bastard dog sits down and pulls with all his might when he’s decided that the edge of the property is as far as his little legs will take him.
I’m not sure what the deal is, but he doesn’t like walking anymore. I used to take him on really long walks (in which I would carry him for a couple miles because he’s a doxie) — 6-7 miles, and he would run with me for 2-3 miles when I was doing speedwork … the little dude is fast.
Way to have patience. I took Barney to an open parking lot a few weeks ago and thought that he’d walk if he had open space and could go in any direction he chose. What happened is that he kept homing back to my car. D’oh.

Aw, oh my gosh. My dog does this exact same thing. Keep in mind that she is a dachshund (also with very short little legs) and okay, so she might be a tad bit overweight. She normally gets a pep in her step after a bit, but then she still needs to rest often. yep, I’m the asshole owner trying to drag her along. This is why most of our 1 mile walks are nearly 30 minutes long. :)
