so trendy.

in random rambles

happy martin luther king, jr day! did you have the day off? if so, hope you enjoyed it. i didn’t. i was at the office all day.. my company does not observe very many holidays. only six, to be exact.

how about a little meals & moves action before my topic of the day?

moves-300x94

after a full day of work and then an appointment with the doctor regarding the mass in my left breast, i headed to the gym. i have less than two weeks until my trip to mexico, so i am completing the workouts from phase 3 of the livefit trainer. these workouts focus on leaning out through circuit workouts, plyometric moves, and sprints.

today’s workout was legs. i did each set below three times through at the weights/reps listed.

set 1:

  • leg press (245# x 15 reps)
  • squat jump (body weight x 15 reps)

set 2:

  • bulgarian split squat using smith machine (85# x 15 reps each leg)
  • butt kicks (1 minute)

set 3:

  • walking barbell lunge (65# x 20 reps)
  • long jump (body weight x 20 reps)

set 4:

  • leg extension (65# x 20 reps)
  • lateral bound (body weight x 20 reps)

set 5:

  • smith machine squat (105# x 30 reps)

set 6:

  • standing calf raise (140# x 20 reps)
  • high knees (1 minute)

set 7:

  • leg press calf raises (135# x 20 reps)
  • imaginary jump rope (1 minute)

if that looks like a long workout, your eyes aren’t fooling you. it was long. and intense! but it was fun. i like plyo and active rests, so i had a good time. not sure my tune will be the same after the sprints on tomorrow’s agenda.

meals

i am going to try to carb cycle. i am not going to beat myself up if i screw up, but i do want to give it a shot. the way it works with livefit trainer is 3 low carb days followed by one high carb day, repeating for up to three weeks.  on the low carb days, i am going to aim for 70 grams of carbs. on high carb days, i am going to aim for 170 grams of carbs. my overall calories won’t change, just the source of those calories. so on the low carb days, i will eat more protein and fat than on the high carb days.

i don’t want to dive into this too much, because i know not many of you are interested in hearing about it, but i will be sure to let you know how it goes and if i follow through with it. if i can do it easily without it bothering me, then more power to me.  however, if i get too cranky, i will likely bag it. i would rather be happy and carby then crabby and cut.

dinner should be interesting tonight since we are meeting our friends for indian food and a movie.. but i will figure it out!

okay! moving on. let’s get trendy!

there are a lot of health trends out there. it’s hard to decide what is worth trying or what is just full of hype. you can google things til the cows come home (where did those cows go, anyway?) but i think the best way to see if something lives up to its trendiness is to just try it for yourself.

here are five supposedly healthy trends in the food & fitness world that i have my eye on and want to try.

1. dry brushing.

image

i first heard about dry brushing from ashley’s blog, but i have since read a lot of magazines that mention it.

i learned from ashley’s post that dry brushing can help with:

  • removing dead skin
  • hydrating skin
  • reducing cellulite
  • support your immune system
  • tighten skin
  • aid in digestion
  • detoxify lymphatic system

i want to buy a brush STAT!

2. juicing.

image

the popular juicing documentary, “fat, sick, and nearly dead” has been on my to-watch list for months now. i really need to sit down and watch it already! since that film came out, there have been several magazine articles and blog posts popping up about juicing and the benefits.

i have a hard time eating my vegetables. there are nights that i will sit down to blog and realize that i didn’t consume a single vegetable all day long. it’s true.  yesterday, for example, the only veggie i ate was a few mushrooms that were in a sauce i made for the chicken we had at dinnertime. i guess i am just not a veggie monster.

aside from all the health benefits that juicing offers, i really just want to start drinking juice to make sure i consume more vegetables. i don’t struggle eating fruit.. i ate 13 clementines yesterday.. but vegetables? yep. problems. right here. and i know momma b has a juicer that she’d be happy to let me borrow. right, mom? plus.. i really want to try out all of kristina’s juice recipes!

3. sitting in a sauna.

image

okay, maybe this isn’t very trendy.. but i caught wind of this idea in a health mag i was reading the other day. i can’t remember which one, but it stuck with me because my mom and dad actually have a sauna in their house.. so i thought, “why do i not take advantage of their sauna?!”  a lot of gyms have saunas, too, but i am not really one for communal sauna sitting. that’s just me.

saunas make me a little crazy.. i think it’s the claustrophobic in me. i get a little bit anxious when i go in.. but after a few deep breaths and really focusing on finding relaxation, i am able to let go of any anxiety that is associated with sitting in a ridiculously hot box. i get this same anxiety when i go to a bikram yoga class, by the way.

some of the reasons sitting in a sauna is good for your health include:

  • relieves stress
  • relaxes muscles
  • flushes toxins
  • cleanses the skin
  • may induce better/deeper sleep
  • improves cardiovascular performance

source: finnleo.com

it’s not like i have some dying urge to start sitting in a sauna every day.. but since i have one close to home at my disposal, i want to try making a habit of it. i do know that once i get past the initial freak-out, it really does allow me to relax, clear my mind, and feel good.

4. bodypump.

image

i know, i know, i KNOW. i am late to the party on this one. i don’t know if bodypump is even trendy anymore! pretty sure it’s been replaced with zumba or crossfit (which, by the way, i would like to try both of those.)  i have never tried bodypump. i am not big on group fitness. i am not big on working out with other people at all, in fact. i would much rather workout solo—whether it be cardio or lifting—i just like to be alone and concentrate on my workout.

some people benefit from group fitness and the energy that comes with it. i could take it or leave it. i have taken step classes back in the day and also a few spin classes here and there. bikram yoga is also a group class, but not quite the same as a class you take at the gym. bodypump intrigues me because you are working so many different muscles at once. it seems like you lift lighter weights for lots of reps, which is a great way to burn out your muscles. it’s also a great way to lift when cutting.  i always love reading about it on erica’s and teri’s blogs.  i may try a class in the near future before i head to mexico.. but don’t hold me to it.

*********************

5. versa gripps.

image

i have been lifting weights a LOT lately. like.. six days a week. my hands have taken a beating. i have calluses on my palms that are almost worse than marshall’s, and he works with his hands all day! i used to have some gloves that i’d use for weight lifting, but not anymore. i have been looking into investing in another pair of weight lifting gloves, but i think versa gripps might be a better option. i see a lot of people wearing these at the gym.

image

you wear them around your wrist and then when you are doing things like wide grip pulldowns, you wrap the versa gripp around the bar. this gives you a better grip, protects your hand, and allows you to lift heavier weights without hurting your hands. sometimes i have to go a little lighter on the weights solely because my hands hurt. i think i need a pair of these!

*********************

one health trend that i HAVE tried and liked is drinking raw apple cider vinegar. i have been doing this for about a week now.

image

i mix 2 tablespoons of ACV with the juice of half a lemon and about a cup of water (and ice.) i drink this twice a day. i have read about several health benefits that come with drinking raw apple cider vinegar, including:

  • help improve bowel irregularity
  • reduce abdominal bloating
  • acts as a natural remedy for heartburn
  • clears up skin blemishes
  • relieves joint pain and stiffness
  • helps your body break down fats so you can use them instead of store them
  • reduces levels of glucose

source: globalhealingcenter.com

now, i am not sure if drinking my ACV cocktails is doing all of that for me, but i do know it has helped my bloating a bit. my digestion, however, is still really… slow. i am not drinking ACV in hopes to cure all my ailments, and am not betting on it to work miracles, but i figure it doesn’t hurt to drink it. so why not? it is inexpensive and i actually love the taste (it reminds me of citrus kombucha) so i am going to keep it up and hopefully reap a few of the benefits!

and one fitness trend i am absolutely SOLD on is vibram five fingers. i have been using them since august and haven’t worn a pair of “regular” gym shoes since.

image

i have never had happier feet, knees, ankles, or shins. these babies have really changed my workouts for the better. i am hooked.

Qs~

are there any health/food/fitness trends you want to try?

how about ones you have tried.. how did that work out for you?

have you tried anything on my list? thoughts?

I completely agree on the taste of ACV – I put it in a water bottle and it reminds me of Kombucha too. I’ve slacked on drinking it recently, but I need to get back into the habit. I feel like the bloating thing is where it helps me the most.

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List January 16, 2012 at 7:31 pm

I SO want to get a dry brush!! Let me know which one you decide on and if you like it!
Tosca Reno says to jump on a mini-trampoline for 15 minutes a day. I’m going to Walmart to buy one tomorrow. ;)

lindsay January 17, 2012 at 1:47 am

i think i still have mine under my bed with my pogo stick. Wanna borrow that?
;-)

Baking Serendipity January 16, 2012 at 7:36 pm

I have heard so many good things about those shoes! I definitely have had my eye on a pair! I’ve also wanted to watch the juicing documentary. I feel like I need to have money saved up for a juicer before I do because I know I’ll want to buy one!

kathleen @ the daily crumb January 16, 2012 at 7:37 pm

i’m seriously considering jumping on the cross fit / paleo diet bandwagon. i have a bunch of friends who swear by both… hoping it’s not just another crazy phase (like the atkins diet!)

Chloe (In Fine Feather) January 16, 2012 at 7:41 pm

I also had a weird boob thing going on and I’m almost 100% sure it’s related to hormones (and so is my doctor) and birth control. It sucks that BC does that to me, but I definitely don’t want any babies yet!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 9:51 am

I am with you on that!

Lee January 16, 2012 at 7:42 pm

I have tried the dry brushing and I have a juicer. The dry brush feels good, especially on your back. It’s like having someone scratch your back. I like my juicer, but honestly, I feel like it’s more of a pain than it’s worth. You need a lot of produce to make the juice and I feel like it’s a pain to clean. Just my opinion though, I know a lot of people love it.

meg January 16, 2012 at 7:43 pm

hot yoga SO makes me freak out and feel claustrophobic. But then I take some deep breaths and relax a little. I use the sauna or steam room at the gym sometimes… most of the time no one else is in there!

I want a juicer so badly because I think it would be a great way to get more veggies too. Sometimes I really like them and other times I have to make myself eat them… weird.

Clare @ Fitting It All In January 16, 2012 at 7:46 pm

I didn’t know it was possible to love you even more, but you are such a great inspiration for live fit!
also, i’m drinking a little ACV cocktail out of a wine glass right now!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 9:52 am

Clare, you are a doll. I am loving your posts on LiveFit! And I am glad you quit your job.. you’ll be so much happier.

Laura January 16, 2012 at 7:55 pm

I tried ACV for a while when I was dealing with severe sinus issues and I had to stop because it was causing huge stomach issues. Plus my husband said I was really smelly.

I’ve done body pump, but I’ve replaced it with crossfit. I’d rather lift big weights.

AND I’ve tried a homemade version of a versa grip. I had a pretty bad tear on my hand from the aforementioned crossfit and it really helped protect me.

Currently I’m working toward eating full paleo. Not sure if its a trend, but I need to figure out how to fuel my body.

janetha January 18, 2012 at 9:53 am

I like lifting heavy weights, too.. that’s why I have shied away from bodypump. But it might be fun to try.. who knows!

Alana January 16, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Janetha – if you want to improve your digestion issues you 100% need to eat more vegetables! Juicing is great but in order to get the fiber from those veggies, you need to eat them whole!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 9:55 am

My doctor actually told me that I was eating too MUCH fiber. I guess it’s different for everyone and I just need to experiment to see what my body likes.

sophia January 16, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Sauna is HUGE in Korea!!! They have gigantic public saunas for both sexes. I remember the women rubbing salt onto their “trouble zones” while steaming in the sauna because apparently the salt “draws out the fat.” Whatever, I don’t believe it, but if the Korean grandmas are doing it, maybe it’s worth a shot. haha!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 9:56 am

Dude, you never know! Could be true!

Maren January 16, 2012 at 8:09 pm

I’d love to have a juicer! They always look so refreshing! And I love body pump. Sometimes I like to do my own lifting, so then I take a break from body pump…but I love having the option of getting a full-body workout in an hour!

Pure2raw twins January 16, 2012 at 8:13 pm

we drink lemon and ACV water too and love it, as well as have dry skin brushing, sat in saunas, and juicing. love them all but do a poor job of keeping up with them all ;)
HUGS

Amanda January 16, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Have you thought about digestive enzymes to help with your digestion? They’re just capsules/pills that are full of the same enzymes food encounter in your body to break down the components more efficiently.
I know whenever I’m stressed or exercising too much I always have to up them… otherwise the food will just sit in my stomach and give me horrible gas/bloating/heart burn as it rots away instead of being properly digested.

i know my natural, holistic personal trainer recommends Zypan (can find it through Amazon) since it’s sold by a very reputable company.

Just a thought!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 9:57 am

I take a probiotic but I haven’t taken an enzyme. I keep meaning to ask my doc about them, so thanks for the reminder. I will look into zypan!

Amanda January 18, 2012 at 10:02 am

Yeah, they’re completely different from probiotics– 100% different.

Probiotics are great, but they basically just aid the growth of “good” bacteria in the gut.
Digestive enzymes supplements are full of the various enzymes that are found in your mouth, stomach, intestines, bile that help break down the various components in your food (proteins, fats, carbs, etc). I’ve found they’ve helped unbelievable amounts in my digestive health (and allover health since my food wasn’t being broken down properly and thence nutrients weren’t being properly absorbed).

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:50 am

Awesome, thank you for the clarification. I am going to talk to my doc for sure! I already googled zypan!

Naomi(onefitfoodie) January 16, 2012 at 8:22 pm

i have thought about versagripps as well! I have been lfting much heavier lately and NEVER wear gloves…I really dont care about the calluses etc…but I do want to increase strength and I know that cycling between grips and no grips can help this! and theyre PINK! :)

Bodypump…I dont care for it and acutally htink it can be dangerous for those who do not know anything about weight training to just jump in on a class. I hate to see peope injure themselves, or do more harm than good while taking body pump…SO important to learn proper form BEFORE hitting up a body pump class

Annette@EnjoyYourHealthyLife January 17, 2012 at 11:30 am

It is important to learn form for sure (!!!), but as a BodyPUMP instructor, that is what we are training and doing as best we can for the participants. I think it depends on the instructor and the class–I think a great mix is BodyPUMP + training sessions for those who have never lifted. I’ve seen bodies/lives change dramatically b/c of BP (esp if the person loves a class workout)–and I say, the more the better to get fit and toned :)

But form is crucial no matter what–and every instructor should do this/pay attention/fix it (even though they don’t always). Good thoughts!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 9:58 am

Haha yeah, I got some.. they are on their way. But I didn’t get pink. I am so not a pink girl! Got black.

Kris January 16, 2012 at 8:24 pm

dry brushing is a great thing!! I offered it on every spa menu I have created, and I do it a lot… I was dry brushing every day during our juice fast (and even have a post on it… still unpublished because the photos are sitting on my other camera, ha!). it is a GREAT aid in detoxing.

…and so is sauna! I used to steam a few times a week and really miss it.

acv is a good one too, as is lemon water. I do both every day.

I cannot believe I do not have vibrams yet… I KNOW they would help my knees and ankles (both broken/surgeries…). that is one trend I NEED to get on, especially because I used to run barefoot in high school and college anyway… ;)

Kris January 16, 2012 at 8:24 pm

if you DO start juicing more, PLEASE let me know if there are any questions or things I can help with :)

lindsay January 17, 2012 at 1:45 am

queen of juicing right here! i love it and will be getting a juicer when we get home, thats for sure! JG, try juicing apple and then add a little cider vinegar and honey. I heard thats even better. Worth a shot.
;)

janetha January 18, 2012 at 9:59 am

You would love the Vibrams, then. They’d help, I know it! I am for sure looking to you when I hop on the juice wagon.

One question.. my Vitamix is on the fritz and I had a few comments that Blendtecs act as a blender and a juicer. What do you think? I may just buy one of those and knock out the need for a new blender and a juicer with one appliance.

Kyle @ Getting Better and Better January 16, 2012 at 8:29 pm

Big juicer fan here…I have an Omega 8004…and there is plenty of pulp that makes its way into the juice so you get fiber too…besides…we get plenty of fiber from other sources so if you are focusing on the plant nutrition, juicing is just great.

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:01 am

Thanks for the recommendation! I get enough fiber with my food, actually maybe too much sometimes, so juicing sounds like it’d be good for me.

Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile January 16, 2012 at 8:37 pm

I am dyyyyying for a pair of vibrams. I really need to get my hands on them, I’ve heard such great things!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:07 am

Or maybe get your feet on them ;)

Tiffany @ Snack Snark Bark January 16, 2012 at 8:42 pm

I recently found out my roommate has a juicer and I desperately want to try it out! I go through spurts where I have a hard time consuming either veggies or produce but usually get enough of one in in a day.

I havent tried Body Pump but they offer it at my gym and want to go one of these days. I tried Crossfit and it absolutely killed my knees so thats something I wont do again.

Carbzilla January 16, 2012 at 8:43 pm

I love my juicer, I love our sauna! I should break out my minitramp, and I bet I have a body brush around here somewhere. Apparently I’m a big fan of trends!

Rachel January 16, 2012 at 8:53 pm

I have been eyeing those shoes. Do you wear them other than to the gym? I’m thinking of investing in a pair for summer. Also, I have really poor digestion and am taking both digestive enzymes and probiotics, both of which seem to have helped a ton. I have slow lower bowel, among other things, so you may want to give it a try.

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:19 am

If I am going to run an errand before or after the gym, I will wear them. I wish it was more socially acceptable to wear them ALL the time.. because they are that comfortable. I need to look into an enzyme. I take a probiotic already, but not an enzyme. Thanks!

Ann @ Day by Day January 16, 2012 at 9:00 pm

I’ve been drinking ACV in water for about a week now too! I was pretty surprised how much I like the taste. I knew it was good for you, but it was nice to see a lot of the benefits listed. So far I think it’s great! I actually am a Type 1 diabetic and my blood sugar levels have been really easy to control since I’ve been drinking it.

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:21 am

That’s awesome to hear!

elyse January 16, 2012 at 9:01 pm

not sure if you saw, but beachbody started selling Pump to do at home, since you said you are not big on group fitness. check it out: http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/les-mills-pump-workout.do?gclid=CMD6-IaW1q0CFQp9hwodwFOFlA&code=SEMB_GOOGLE_LMP&extcmp=b438slbsflbwk3j248u1377&ef_id=pCJNyNexZRsAAMLI:20120117040057:s

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:22 am

As much as I am not into group fitness, I think I am into at home fitness even less. Haha. Thanks for the link, though!

Jessiket January 16, 2012 at 9:04 pm

I did dry brushing for a couplet of weeks… Was amazing. My skin looked amazing and I got a surge of energy right after which was weird. I don’t know why I stopped probably laziness and I should jump back on.. I could tell a difference.
I would love to try a meat only on the weekends.trend. sounded like a good way to keep down the cholesterol.and fats.

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:23 am

I don’t think Simon would hop on that train.

Bria January 16, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Dry brushing is super invigorating. I think you’ll like it. Do it after a Bodypump class (with those special gloves). Then take a sauna and drink some juice ;-)

You really ought to try green smoothies so you get the fiber in veggies. That will prob help noticeably with the digestive issues. Juicing is also a great idea to get vegetable nutrients, even though the fiber’s extracted out in juices.

Btw, I find the carb cycling stuff fascinating. Good luck with it.

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:24 am

I drink green smoothies all the time! Love them. I go through lots of spinach. Wish my Coscto sold kale, though.

Mailing your package today! XXX

Bonnie January 16, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Great post! Fun and interesting trends to read about…You know I love my Vibrams (although I work out a lot at home in bare feet and the winter is just too cold for me to wear mine – at least without those special toe socks); been doing ACV and lemon for a few weeks now too! I noticed I’m less bloated but to be honest, I didn’t attribute it to that! Didn’t realize that was a benefit. Mikey hates the smell but I love the taste. ;) Bodypump? Not for me. But maybe that’s because I don’t belong to a gym. I’m like you – I like to do my workouts, my way, and get them done. I did take some spin classes when I worked at a gym and OH MAN is that a good/tough workout! Way more than I would have thought. :) Dry brushing? Wanted to try it ever since I read about it on Ashley’s blog too; would love to hear more about it AND your thoughts on carb cycling if you give either a long enough chance. Super interested. :D

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:26 am

Funny, because Marshall loves the smell! I didn’t know it until a whole 32 oz bottle shattered on our kitchen floor last week. He came in, gave it a sniff, and said, “Is that ACV?! I love that smell!” Haha, weirdo. Love him.

Jen January 16, 2012 at 10:05 pm

i want to try pump too but i’m totally intimidated by all the people in that class they all seem like bad asses (same with cross fitters.) i swear everyone in b-town either goes to bodypump on a regular basis or belongs to a crossfit gym (or owns one). i just can’t bring myself to pay $100 a month for a crossfit gym though because i’m cheap! ha

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:31 am

I know, it’s so expensive! Candice (from bodyofamother.com) is one of the Bodypump teachers.. she’s a sweetie and I am going to go to her class on a Tuesday night. Wanna come?!

jen January 18, 2012 at 11:13 am

i took one of her classes once. i can’t remember if it was combat or attack but i seriously would love to. let me know what night you are going!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 11:52 am

K–she teaches every other Tuesday. Not this coming one, but she is going to try to switch because the one after that I will be in Mexico. I will let you know!

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats January 16, 2012 at 10:41 pm

Those Versa Grips sound awesome! My hands have taken a beating ever since I have started Live Fit. Also, I love my Vibrams for lifting. I would never wear other shoes again. The ACV cocktail thing sounds interesting! I haven’t had a kombucha ever since I moved back home because it isn’t sold here. :| Maybe that would be a good substitute for me!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:36 am

It really is so much like kombucha!!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga January 16, 2012 at 11:12 pm

Juicing. Let me break this down for you and how it went for me, my .02 only
The produce, at least $3-4 worth
Wash it well and actually juice it. At least 10 minutes
Cleanup the juicer, dry it, put it away. At least 10 minutes b/c juicer cleanup is pretty much the most awful task ever. I’d rather clean sludge out of the bottom of a Vitamix than juicer pulp. HARD to remove.
So we are at 20 minutes and 4 bucks for a glass of juice. Which is why I don’t juice and I have a real pretty, fancy, juicer. Wanna buy it? :)

My opinions only…so people love it. Hey, awesome! They can juice for me. Lol

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:39 am

Hahah.. you make it sound like pure hell.

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva January 16, 2012 at 11:16 pm

I’d love to try crossfit as well! I’m building up my strength and stamina using the livefit program first though! Another trend I’m probably pretty late on is using supplements to support my diet. I’m not taking fish oil, BCAAs, and protein powder and am starting to notice good changes in my body! Good luck with the last few weeks of prep for mexico :)

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:40 am

Thanks, Sarah! It’s great to hear you are seeing a difference with adding those things. Awesome.

elise January 16, 2012 at 11:32 pm

sorry boo. i was at the hospital all day too. meh. i did get time and a half for it though. but i also had some crazy rude patients too.

i had grand ol visions of juicing every day…annnnnd, yeah, to second averie’s comment. the time and cleaning factors are obnoxious. that said. the 5 times a year i DO use the thing, i love it and wish i did it more. still not worth the $ of the juicer though. buying whole foods’ fresh pressed stuff when i get the craving would still be cheaper.

Kendall January 16, 2012 at 11:44 pm

I really think you’d like crossfit. I love it, and it’s one of my preferred ways to “lift” heavy things.
I’ve done body pump and really stuck to it for awhile but what I’ve found is that I didn’t feel like I was becoming stronger. I felt like I was building more cardio and tolerance to doing a high amount of reps with less weight…if that makes sense!
I reaaaaallllyyyy want a pair of vibram five fingers! What kind do you have? I want some with a little more support that pure barefoot (I know some come with a different padding options on the bottoms) but if they get rid of issues like a lot of reviews say, then I hopefully won’t have to worry about that after awhile.

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:41 am

That’s kind of my impression of body pump. High reps doesn’t really build muscle. Although building some endurance wouldn’t kill me.

Jennyb January 17, 2012 at 12:27 am

my thing to try was green smoothies & its going well. In fact i’m ticking a few off your list as i have a juice ready in the fridge that i made yesterday & after i’ve had my green smoothie i’ll be off to body pump for 9.30am (which means i’d better get a shifty on!)

Emily January 17, 2012 at 2:48 am

I juice & dry body brush every day, and love it. I found that once I got started there was no stopping! We actually watched Fat Sick & Nearly Dead this weekend just gone by, and whilst I didn’t really learn anything new from it, it was still really inspiring! The health sort-of trend I’d like to try out is eating more sea vegetables. I generally don’t have any in my diet at all, but figure those dark green leaves must be super good for the body :)

cathy@1970kikiproject January 17, 2012 at 4:45 am

yea for vibrams!!! glad to hear they are so enjoyable for you. thanks for the idea to wear them at the gym – i have stopped wearing mine due to the winter weather and just plain didn’t think of using them at the gym!
i wish i had daily access to a sauna – both for just the heat and also because i do think the sweating is good for releasing toxins.
hope the next two weeks FLY as vacation time approaches!!

Erica January 17, 2012 at 4:51 am

I want to work out with you! Obviously I love group fitness. The other trends I could give or take. I want to try this vinegar in water thing…but I feel like I can’t do it. What does it taste like??

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:45 am

Kombucha.. if you have tried that. I love the taste of all vinegars so I really like it. I could guzzle balsamic!

Anna January 17, 2012 at 4:51 am

I used to drink acv with water for a while and really liked it..must go back to that. I saw Ashley’s post on dry brushing awhile ago and also was intrigued. I would say the LiveFit trainer is a bit of a small trend right now. What can I say, after seeing it on your blog, I jumped on the bandwagon too and am loving it!

Lauren January 17, 2012 at 5:00 am

I really want to get on the ACV thing. I’ve also heard such great benefits but right now, I’m trying to focus on getting more regular h20. Its always harder for me in the winter.
Body Pump is a great class! I love doing it once a week to mix things up!

The Healthy Hostess January 17, 2012 at 5:01 am

I love your trend list! I think you should give Body Pump and group ex. another shot. Make sure you ask around and go to a really good instructor because they will make it or break it for you!
Looking forward to hearing about your carb days!

Hope @ With A Side Of Hope January 17, 2012 at 5:37 am

I want to try the dry brush! I also want to try drinking apple cider vinegar. I never knew that it could help with abdominal bloating and digestion. As you know, I’m having a ton of stomach issues too right now. So I’m willing to try anything that might help. Thanks for the tip :)

Heather (Heather's Dish) January 17, 2012 at 5:44 am

i would LOVE to try body pump, i just don’t know where to get the money to join a gym that has it :)

i think the versa grip this is a really good idea and i definitely need to take better care of my hands. if i start lifting that much i think it’s a wise investment!

Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon January 17, 2012 at 5:46 am

I’ve never tried any of those!
Dry brushing is something that I’ve also wanted to try since seeing it on Ashley’s blog. I’ve walked past the brushes again and again but have yet to actually buy one!
I’m also very intrigued by CrossFit!

SweatyGirl January 17, 2012 at 6:10 am

Well, you know I love my juicing! I did a 30 day juice fast and LOVED it. Now, I am on a 12 week one!

You can keep the sauna though, I think it’s the most uncomfortable thing in the world!

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning January 17, 2012 at 6:40 am

Amen for carbs! I’m sick of hearing about low-carb diets again- but the carb cycle sounds MUCH better. I was looking into Paleo, but then read the details- which is all about high-fat meats and no grains… no thanks!
I have a juicer- got it as a wedding gift. It’s awesome- but I rarely use it because it is the biggest pain to clean up. I have to say- it is great to stick in a ton of veggies and an apple and come out with a glass of sweet tasting juice!
YES to Bodypump! Do it!! You will definitely notice different muscles being used! My husband came to my class on Friday – his first time trying it out- and was sore in all new places afterwards. And he’s in the gym lifting at least 5 days a week!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:46 am

That’s what I am thinking–it would be fun to see how my body responds to a totally different kind of training.

Felicia (Natural + Balanced) January 17, 2012 at 7:43 am

good luck with the carb cycling! juicing is awesome.. i haven’t done it recently, but was hooked for a while and should get back to it once the veggies are back in the garden. liquid vitamins at its finest!

Kirsten (Kirsten Captures) January 17, 2012 at 7:56 am

I just bought a pair of Vibram Komodos! After just two days I am already obsessed. My feet, shins, and knees already feel so much better and they are a little sore from being worked! Once you wear a pair, you can’t go back. I’m already singing their praises to everyone I see.

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:47 am

Haha that’s EXACTLY how I was after trying them. Advocate right here!

Betty January 17, 2012 at 8:06 am

I want to try crossfiT and carb cycling.. Our old softball trainer is a crossfit instructor and always shares hateful links about how mainstream crossfit is becoming.. Makes me laugh.

I LOVE body pump! I used to do that and Zumba back to back and got great results in less than 2 months. I liked switching it up every once in awhile but there are no places that offer it other than my old gym which is rediculously overpriced. My mom swears vinegar is the cure to all.. Sun burn? Dab some on there.. Cold sore? Swish some in your mouth.. Tummy ache? Swig some down.. Also great for cleaning.. But I think that’s the distilled kind.. Who knows!

janetha January 18, 2012 at 10:48 am

I put distilled vinegar in my laundry to get gym funk out!

Tamara @ The Stretch Jean Incident January 17, 2012 at 9:06 am

I tried BodyPump at my gym once and while it was a great workout, I still prefer using my Jari Love DVDs at home; most of her workouts are based around high reps and since I have my own step and aerobic barbell, I’m able to achieve the same results within the privacy of my own home and at a time that works for me (I’m an early morning exerciser and all of the Body Pump classes at my gym are in the evening or middle of the day).

If you have an opportunity to try the class though, I would definitely recommend it because it’s worth the challenge!

Christin@purplebirdblog January 17, 2012 at 9:32 am

I love dry brushing and really have gotten out of the habit – I really need to get back into it. I juice at least once a week and love it, especially now that Alex is on board too! I love ACV and drink 2 tbsps a day. Zumba is totally not my thing – I hate dancing so it just isn’t a good fit. :)

Lauren January 17, 2012 at 9:35 am

I will be very curious to see what your typical meals are like with carb cycling. I’m in the third phase of the LiveFit as well and like you haven’t been really following the meal plan but think I should try to the next time around.
