making a comeback.

in meals,moves

hey guys! how was your monday? mine was cold. marsh and i just got back from taking the pups for a romp in the park. it is a mere 17 degrees out.

actually, i was freezing all day. i had a warm, fuzzy blanket on my lap all day at work. the luxury of working in an office, eh?

photo

i feel bad for marshall—he works outdoors and it’s only going to get colder from here!

i had a super busy day today! it was go, go, go. actually this is the first time i have taken a load off and it’s 5 minutes to 10 PM.

things started at 5:45 AM today. i have to be at work an hour and a half earlier on mondays, meaning i have to actually wake up an hour and a half earlier on mondays. rough. somehow, i manage.

i had eight hours of work, followed by my workout, followed by three hours at my mom’s office.. taking photos of her clients with santa! yes, santa. he was in town!

IMG_8140IMG_8107

my mom is a real estate agent and every year her office invites all clients—past and present—to have photos taken with santa. i was the photographer this year. need a house? call momma b.

i got home around 8:30 PM and whipped up dinner. i was barely finished eating before penny was pulling me out the door to go to the park. since our fence blew over in the windstorm, the dogs haven’t been allowed to romp in the yard at their leisure.. so they were really antsy to get some fresh air.  some fresh, 17 degree air.

i came  home, made a dessert i will show you in a minute, and am now drinking tea and blogging.

my workout today was day 57 of jamie eason’s livefit trainer.. which also marked day one of the third and final phase.  HOLY CRAP. judging by the first workout of the phase, i can tell phase three is going to be a doozy.

i told you guys i would post progress photos at the end of phase two.. but i dropped the ball on having someone take those photos. so, i took an iPhone mirror photo instead…

image

…i know, classy. hey, it works. all that matters is that i am happy! my abs are making a comeback! i think my hard work in the gym has been paying off. we all know it’s not all the cookies i’ve been eating. those haven’t been doing me any favors whatsoever. and by the way, when i talk about cookies all the time.. i am not just being cute or sarcastic. i have been eating cookies every day, way too often. it’s got to stop.

anyway…phase three really ramps it up with the intensity! my quads + calves workout today incorporated weight training, plyometrics, and active resting (butt kicks, high knees, etc.)  it was tough. i am excited to see how i handle the rest of the workouts this week—and throughout the remainder of the program. i think the added movements will really aid in fat burning and hopefully the plyometrics will work wonders on my core. oh, and my thighs.

another aspect that is introduced in phase 3 of livefit trainer is carb cycling.  this is something i have thought about trying before, but not for quite some time. actually, not since back in 2009 when i posted about it.

as i mentioned in previous posts, i didn’t follow the livefit nutrition plan for the first two phases of the program. i have been focusing on eating clean (uh, most of the time, aside from that cookie problem…) and really didn’t have the desire to get super strict with my eating habits. there is a time and a place for strict eating habits, and i wasn’t there yet.

HOWEVER.. i just might be trying out the three weeks of carb cycling outlined in weeks 10, 11, and 12 of the program. i realized that i am heading to mexico in a little over seven weeks. hmmm.. yep, i think a trip to mexico warrants “a time and a place” for stricter eating habits. because christmas is smack dab in the middle of the carb cycling weeks of phase three, i realize this may be tricky.

for  a gal of my size, jamie eason’s plan suggests consuming 70 grams of carbs on low carb days and 175 grams of carbs on high carb days. today i decided to tally up my carbs, just to see where i fell with a day of typical eating—sans cookies.

image

i didn’t take photos of it all.. because i really fail at the whole take-photos-of-everything-i-eat concept these days.. but here’s a rundown:

  • breakfast was 8 oz of plain 2% chobani, a sliced banana (140 grams), 2 T uncooked oats, cinnamon, and vanilla bean paste. i also had coffee with 2 T of whole milk.
  • lunch was 8 oz lowfat cottage cheese on top of a big salad with lettuce, cucumber, bell peppers, and celery. i used 2 T of trader joe’s raspberry vinaigrette dressing.
  • i mixed up some powdered BCAAs and drank them before and during my workout, then immediately had a protein shake post-workout. it had 1 cup almond milk, 2 cups spinach, 1 scoop vanilla whey protein, 1 cup raspberries, ice, and the gums.
  • i headed to do the santa photos and then came home for a late dinner. we had huevos rancheros.. i had mine with egg whites, black beans, avocado, greek yogurt, salsa, and a sprinkle of cheese.
  • i just finished dessert which was a pumpkin chocolate chip protein cake.. you can see it below.

i tallied up everything i’ve had today. 155g carbs. hmm—i’ve almost hit the limit for the suggested high carb day. pretty interesting. when i did body for life, i aimed for 125g of carbs each day. this was very doable and i didn’t feel carb-deprived in the least.  i think i have really just upped my carb intake without realizing it because CARBS ARE EVERYWHERE.  good ones, bad ones, delicious ones.. everything has carbs. even things that i consider my main source of protein have carbs—like greek yogurt and cottage cheese. i had both of these items today, so my carbs were probably higher than if i had eaten more zero-carb protein like chicken.

don’t get me wrong.. i don’t think carbs are bad. i am not “one of those people.” i have never in my life tried a low carb diet. however, i do think there is something to carb cycling and believe it really can help lean you out.  but since i am used to eating around 150 carbs each day, eating 70g each day is kind of unfathomable to me. i know i can do ANYTHING i put my mind to—especially if it’s only for a few weeks—so i might give carb cycling a try. if not this month, then for sure for the three weeks prior to my trip to mexico. in fact, that might actually be the better time to do it. (it is not suggested to carb cycle for longer than 3 consecutive weeks since it can lead to muscle loss.)

now that i have opened my eyes to my carb consumption today, i think i will skip the cookies for a few nights. i bypassed the cookie jar tonight (as much as i wanted one) and instead, i am adjusting my cookie habit and opting for something just as sweet and satisfying., and definitely more filling.

i make a lot of different versions of protein cakes and muffins—a favorite being one from deb. however, since i am being carb-conscious, i went for one of my lower carb recipes.

pumpkin chocolate chip protein cake. yes, it’s making a comeback!!

IMG_8142

ingredients:

  • 1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein powder (i used MRM natural vanilla)
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 T canned pumpkin
  • 1/2 t baking powder
  • 7-8 dark chocolate chips, melted

directions:

  1. spray a mug with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. combine all ingredients except chocolate chips in the mug and whisk well.
  3. melt chocolate chips in a separate container (i use a small silicone bowl.)
  4. whisk chocolate into cake batter.
  5. microwave for 90 seconds (give or take, depending on your microwave power.)
  6. remove from mug and eat!

nutrition info:  95 calories, 14g protein, 5g carbs, 2g fat.

considering all those cookies i have been eating are roughly 150 calories apiece and, uh, maybe one gram of protein and very high in fat and carbs (and sugar).. this is a pretty stellar swap.

IMG_8147

for now, at least.

this post was long. thanks for reading.

Q~

are you carb conscious? ever tried carb cycling?

emily (a nutritionist eats) December 5, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Your abs are an inspiration! Maybe you should do a post all about abs and how you get them. :)

Jessica@ Healthy Dairyland December 5, 2011 at 10:43 pm

I’m uber jealous of those abs! That is all the motivation I need to start strength training and going to my core workout class every week! I don’t watch my carbs, but I should. I am pretty sure the amount of carbs I consume on a daily basis is waaaay too high.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) December 5, 2011 at 10:46 pm

Wow, with the exception of the fruit and beans, your day seemed pretty low in carbs to me and boom, you’re already up near her ‘high’ days. I would not be a happy camper on 75. In fact, I’d probably be a beotch. But you can do anything for a few weeks, especially with a goal in mind like Mexico.

Thanks for the link love- I don’t think I’ve ever tried your protein cake before- good for the low carbing days.

And I said it on instagram, your abs are fab. I’m amazed the cookies didn’t murder them as they would undoubtedly murder mine.

Lauren @ Sugar Coated Sisters December 5, 2011 at 10:48 pm

i’m 3 days away from phase 3 and kinda scared… carb cycling sounds like a lot of work, it might make my brain hurt from all the mental math. go for it and let us know how it is!

momma b. December 5, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Great evening with awesome clients, friends and family! Santa was a hit with everyone! Thanks Janetha for your continued willingness to serve – love ya so much!!
xoxo

p.s. your abs are awesome! (just like you!)

Tiffany @ Snack Snark Bark December 5, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Damn girl, your abs are bangin’!!!

And my schedule is going to be me going into work an hour earlier on Mon and Tues and also staying an hour later (7-5), I havent even begun this schedule yet but I am already not a fan.

Jess@atasteofconfidence December 5, 2011 at 11:05 pm

You are looking great and inspiring me!! Way to go.

Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn December 5, 2011 at 11:09 pm

Janetha. You are in SICK shape. Slash fuzzy blankets make life so much better. Too bad all of my classes are in different places. #collegegirlproblems

Ellen Clifford December 5, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Ummm, I am a carb fan. Good ones, mostly but I’m convinced that the occasional processed sugary carb is good for both body and soul…
That being said, your abs are out of control awesome!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga December 5, 2011 at 11:27 pm

Whatever you’re doing…is working!!

In my mind I remember that tummy pic you showed a month or two ago when you were having all that tummy trouble and now..you’ve got a 6 pack. Dang girl….you are rockin’ it!!!

Chloe (In Fine Feather) December 5, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Damn girl! You look great!
This is inspiring me to try out the same program once I have a routine in January. My motivation is to get into shape for a friend’s wedding in February so it will be perfect.
I might even start earlier :)

lindsay December 5, 2011 at 11:55 pm

carbs are hidden in such random things, eh? I don’t count carbs but i do know my body craves fat/protein more. I’m curious to see how that carb cycling goes. When its cold outside, i definitely crave more carbs. But tis natural.
Looking smokin hot my dear! oh and go to bed, your day is tiring just reading.
Love you.

Yolie @ Practising Wellness December 6, 2011 at 3:14 am

Oh my gosh, you look insanely hot! girl to girl, lol! :-P Totally inspired! :-D Way to go you! Ahh, you are also making me really want to try Jamie Eason’s weight lifting programmme- and your eats are SO clean and healthy! Respect! :-D ;-) xyx

Catherine December 6, 2011 at 3:51 am

Hi Janetha,
First time commenting though I read your blog every day all the way from Europe. I keep coming back because your content is interesting, humourous and personal!
Just curious. I’ve been in a fit rut for a month now. I am fairly consistent exercising but last month I’ve really lost my focus and done nothing. I want to try Jamie Eason’s program but am a bit overwhelmed at the complexity of some of the exercises.
My question – do you do every exercise listed in her days or can you say sub them for something you are more familiar with. For eg. I don’t have cable crossover equip at my gym. And am not comfortable doing shoulder press reps with a bar unassisted (could do free weight dumbells though?).
Sorry for the lengthy post. Hope you have time to reply since I am so in awe of your fitness progress.

Sara December 6, 2011 at 6:13 am

I’d like to do the Jamie Eason plan too, BUT I have no gym. All I have is a pair of 5 lbs and 8 lb dumbbells at home. ANY help? I really want a structured program!

Carly December 6, 2011 at 9:43 am

I’ve only just started the plan, and have been doing it at home. I just sub in different exercises that target the same muscles when they require gym equipment I don’t have. My boyfriend is able to help me with that, but I’m sure Google is helpful too!

I haven’t looked too far ahead, but for the first couple weeks it is definitely doable.

Erica December 6, 2011 at 3:58 am

You look terrible ;). If I knew how to type the whistle sound, I would!! Rockin bod. Santa!! That man is everywhere these days- hope you got to tell him what you want for Christmas! Stay warm over there!

Denise December 6, 2011 at 4:18 am

You you great!!!

Betty December 6, 2011 at 4:36 am

Besides your blog, I read about it in a few magazines and thought it was interesting.. I was one of those people who believed carbs are the devil (with the help of my dad) and tried the low carb diet about 4 different times.. I failed 4 different times. What can I say, I love my bread.. I would rather eat a loaf of cheese bread than a batch of cookies( and I love fruit) . I love bfl because now I don’t feel deprived of those carbs.

I would love to see your success with the carb cycling!! Anyway, that’s enough for me today.. Going back to sleep with the pups, still sick :(

Lauren December 6, 2011 at 4:57 am

Good God girl, your abs are insane!!!!!!! I’m not sure I could be as dedicated as you, but if it gets me half as good as you look, I’d be willing to give it a try. ;)

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey December 6, 2011 at 5:19 am

Um, can we transport your abs onto my body? Thanks.

I have been a carb monster too lately – and when I say I ate 4 cookies after the came out of the oven, I am 120% honest. Perhaps that’s why my abs don’t look quite like yours?

Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon December 6, 2011 at 5:39 am

Damn girl!! Your hard work has most certainly paid off–you look great!

And I’ve never watched my carbs before. I like to focus more on getting ENOUGH proteins and fats versus limiting my carbs!

Susan December 6, 2011 at 5:42 am

You look BANGIN’.

eef December 6, 2011 at 5:56 am

what a busy monday!

i peeked ahead at phase3, and man… it looks rough! i should be there now but since my gym closed i fell behind, so i’m in week 2 of phase 2.

i read about the carb cycling before, and i actually don’t eat much in the way of grains because they make me bloated, but the low carb days are still REALLY low. i think you’d pretty much have to cut all fruit and dairy out of those days as well. it would just be meat, veggies, and some fat. i should be hitting phase 3 in january, so at least i’ll make it through the holidays without worrying about it! i’m interested to see how your carb cycling goes!

Claire @ Live and Love to Eat December 6, 2011 at 5:56 am

Holy abs! The cookies can’t be holding you back too much!

Heather (Heather's Dish) December 6, 2011 at 6:02 am

i’m not at all carb conscious, but maybe after baby is born i will be…i’d love to have those abs!

Katie December 6, 2011 at 6:11 am

I have never tried carb cycling but I keep an eye on what types of carbs I’m eating!

chandra December 6, 2011 at 6:15 am

This post just motivated me to do the morning workout I was going to skip! A.) You look amazing. I’m jealous. I must figure out a way to work that lifting program into my half marathon training! B.) I just looked at my food log for yesterday and even though my calories were in check, I had 245g of carbs! Definitely going to start keeping a better eye on that. Thanks for the motivation this morning! :)

Heather O'Fee December 6, 2011 at 6:16 am

I love that you are not following the JE-12 week meal plan, and still getting amazing results. Your diet is so clean already!
Carb cycling is something that I have yet to try as well. I am interested to give it a whirl, but I don’t have to be in a swim suit anytime soon. Jealous of your mehico vaca though!

Cafe Rio is totally low carb, right? :)

Sara December 6, 2011 at 6:18 am

I used to be really afraid of carbs, but I’m really tired of that attitude. like this morning I had 1/2 cup oatmeal with raisins + almond milk + pumpkin seeds, and on the side I had some protein powder in almond milk for some protein.

I used to make dairy or something the more major component, but things felt “not right”. I think grains make things more wholesome, BUT I still have a hard time accepting it. (I have no gym and I am not a cardio person unless some walking counts) so I struggle with feeling I need it. But I think its a lot better not to obsess or restrict or feel bad for everything.
So, yeah I way overindulge in carbs (and chocolate), what can I do?

I found 2 other blogs doing that program and they showed their daily eats and I was impressed that they were balanced (for example carb (like bread or rice) + vegs/fruit + protein at each 6 meals (and snacks). But I think that the blogs I saw were really really low in fat and calories, so that was weird.

I know protein–fat are better for me. But I am at a stage where I just do not mentally want to restrict. So carbs and chocolate it is ; good or bad!

Sara December 6, 2011 at 6:20 am

Oh, and I love anything dairy. Chobani is yummy too! My wallet flies through anything dairy.

kathleen @ the daily crumb December 6, 2011 at 6:20 am

yum! i’m going to have to try this protein cake.

it is COLD here in chicago as well…

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning December 6, 2011 at 6:30 am

You look freaking amazing. I have to admit- I am completely jealous of your rockin’ body! It would literally take lots of plastic surgery to get me even close to having abs like that!
Keep up the hard work girl- it obviously is paying off!

Emily December 6, 2011 at 6:43 am

Your abs are looking great! To be honest, I am glad to see that happening with simple clean eats and hard work at the gym. I have been struggling with keeping my carbs down (to around 100) lately, and it is good to see that with 150 I can get killer abs! :)

Sami December 6, 2011 at 6:53 am

look at those abs!! killerrrr (: those cookies got nothin’ on ya ;)
xo.

Sara December 6, 2011 at 7:18 am

You look fantastic!!! Holy hot abs!! What cookies do for your abs, I wish they did for mine.
You’re such an inspiration!

meg December 6, 2011 at 7:42 am

Congrats on your hard work! I really love your pants in that photo, what brand are they?

I feel the same way you do about carbs. They aren’t scary, but if you pay attention, they are everywhere, and a lot of people eat too many. I recently cut back mostly to make room for more fruits and vegetables and getting out of the habit on grabbing carbs (I just typed crabs) for a snack all the time. Especially when you eat simple, processed carbs, they have no staying power!

Janetha December 7, 2011 at 11:12 am

I got them from TJ Maxx.. no idea what the brand is! Sorry <3

Allison December 6, 2011 at 7:49 am

I am proud to admit, I am a carb-a-holic… Give me a loaf of bread and a piece of fruit, and I’m a happy girl! Maybe that’s why I don’t have washboard abs like you :P

Felicia (Natural + Balanced) December 6, 2011 at 7:56 am

you can totally do the low carb- it really is just all about switching out for veggies and lean protein, which i know you can do. my diet in general is higher protein and fat than the “norm”, and lower carb (as in- very minimal bread and grains). The one thing that made me slowly transition was reading about paleo, and the fact that we really dont NEED grains in our diet. So I made slow changes and swapped out bread for veggies with my eggs (etc) and its made a difference both in how i look and feel- mentally and physically. anyway, good luck! the trainer is awesome and it really is helping so many women focus more on weight training to change their body instead of endless cardio

Calee December 6, 2011 at 8:07 am

I agree with you — I was reading that we don’t really need those things as well. I also found out through randomly ditching carbs that I’ve got a gluten issue. I slowly added some back in to see what was okay and what wasn’t (I still don’t eat pasta, bread, etc. — even if it’s gluten-free). I still like quinoa because of its protein and it’s nice to have that when I’m having a major carb craving!

Felicia (Natural + Balanced) December 6, 2011 at 9:12 am

Yeap I am the same way. I had some bloodwork done that showed I’m gluten sensitive, which explained a lot. That being said, when I’m craving a hot bowl of oats or toast with my eggs I don’t deprive myself. That always lead to a horrible cycle of feeling deprived. Choosing sprouted bread like ezekiel and GF oats helps- takes a while to figure out what works best for yourself!

Calee December 6, 2011 at 8:06 am

Duuuuuude you look amazing! I would love to look like that and I really need to start a training program. I do best when I have a real program to follow. The problem is that I don’t have money to spend. I kept wanting to try P90X and that’s too expensive. I’ve got a ton of Bob Harper and Jillian DVDs but I’ve gotten past that level (Jillian anyway … Bob still kicks my butt).

I’m on this plan. It is free … and sounds amazing.

However, I think I’m going to start tomorrow because today is a cardio day and it looks like she’s got you lifting on day one … I know I know .. :)

Erin December 6, 2011 at 8:12 am

Your abs — and the rest of you — look amazing!! I am totally inspired to check out Jamie Eason’s plan now. You look incredible!!

Ashley December 6, 2011 at 8:25 am

I’m on day 2 of the livefit program! Just trying it out for now, but might stick with it. I’m not following the food plan but am trying to up my protein a bit more and eat single serving portions of carbs…like 1c of rice, instead of who knows how much I scoop out of the pot. :) So, not really counting anything, but paying a little more attention.

Eizabeth @ reads recipes runs December 6, 2011 at 8:45 am

You look great! I haven’t read much about carb cycling, I am going to read up!

I’m stoked you’re mom is a realtor, now in 45 years when me and the hubs are ready to buy a house we know who to contact!

Tamara @ The Stretch Jean Incident December 6, 2011 at 8:48 am

I have tried carb cycling and saw really great results (I was following the Cheat Your Way Thin plan at the time), but it was hard to maintain since I had to consider meal options for my fiance (who was *not* carb cycling). And since I’m lazy by nature, having to constantly monitor my food composition every day seemed like a lot work after a few weeks.

While I liked the results, I think my success just boiled down to the number of calories I ate on certain days, not necessarily the number of carbs. By monitoring my carbs and portion sizes, I just naturally ate fewer calories.

I do consider myself carb conscious overall, but in the end, I tend to avoid plans that restrict when I can eat oatmeal; I turn into an unhappy rebel, haha.

Annie December 6, 2011 at 8:53 am

It was -6* this morning. Blergh. Light at the end of the tunnel – it’s supposed to be above freezing on Thursday! :)

janae@hungryrunnergirl.com December 6, 2011 at 9:05 am

Your abs are amazing….you are inspiring me! Okay, why do they have to make Mondays even worse than they already are than making you get up even earlier. I don’t work at an office and I always have a blanket. Have a great day!

Lauren A. @ Newest Obsession December 6, 2011 at 9:18 am

Ha, I just finished phase 2 and my abs don’t look like that ;-). Glad you are seeing good results. Phase 3 is definitely intense with all the sprints and plyometrics.

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather December 6, 2011 at 9:23 am

I wondered exactly how carb cycling worked. I’m not crazy carb conscious…. I just focus on whole grains and balanced meals and I feel good with that. And ever since thanksgiving I’ve been cookie crazy too… Seriously, ever day.

Your abs are the bomb. Keep it up girl!

Clare @ Fitting It All In December 6, 2011 at 9:34 am

150g a day? and there are 130 in just a banana? man i eat a lot of carbs…

no no no.. that was 140 grams of banana that i had (weight) in that 140 grams of banana, there were 32 g carbs :)

Clare @ Fitting It All In December 6, 2011 at 9:41 am

oooh haha yeah I just looked it up and was like “ok that’s not right” ….makes more sense! Is there a place you get all your nutrition/macro info? i always just google:)

Janetha December 6, 2011 at 9:45 am

haha.. yeah. i always use either myfitnesspal.com or thedailyplate.com–i have cross-checked with labels and other resources and have found those two sites the most reliable (and user friendly!) xo

Krissie J @ A Philly Nerd Girl December 6, 2011 at 9:46 am

Can I have your abs for Christmas? Seriously! You are looking awesome! I’ve not been overly carb-conscious as I’m trying not to tack every single thing like I used to, but I do try not to go overboard. Cookies definitely don’t help. ;) I think I may have to give this Jamie Eason thing a try! As well as your pumpkin protein cake. Looks good!
