rad or ridiculous?

by Janetha on November 8, 2011

in random rambles

one of the highlights of flying is reading sky mall.

IMG_4273

don’t deny it, you love flipping through this magazine, too. and if you don’t, i definitely wonder what’s wrong with you. the magazine has the same draw as a really horrible infomercial on TV that you just can’t click away from.

my favorite part of the magazine is the section where everything has the word “the” before the name of the product. these titles always have a period afterward, but i like to put an exclamation point after the title when i read it in my head, just to make it EXTRA exciting.

for example…

the temperature regulating pet bed!

IMG_4251

the learn to play banjo!

IMG_4252

the adjustable sheepskin slippers!

IMG_4253

i think all products from here on out should always have the word “the” before their name. it just makes life more fun.

as you know, i was on an airplane this past weekend. i immediately grabbed the catalog from the seatback compartment. this particular issue of sky mall—holiday 2011—had some real gems.

IMG_4272

there actually were a couple items that caught my eye. since i work in a windowless office (at a window company, no less) and sit on my butt all day long, these two products actually had me captivated and wanting to order.

portable sunlight. i wonder if the fact that i don’t see sunlight all day is changing my mood? now that we have fallen back with the time change, it’s almost completely dark when i leave my office. i don’t think i am suffering from seasonal affective disorder, though, so i will save my $59.99.

IMG_4246

the sit fit trainer. because who wouldn’t want to improve their abs, lower body muscle tone and burn calories while sitting at their desk? i wonder if it really works…

IMG_4249

…but at $49.99, i think i will stick with my online (free) stopwatch that i have been setting to go off each hour so i can walk around the office to get my body moving.

there were some more products in the issue that caught my eye because they made me laugh OR they made me want to order. or maybe both… i want to know what you think!

i am going to leave it up to you to decide if these products are rad (as in clever, useful, innovative or amazing) or ridiculous (as in what the crap were they thinking when they made this one?!)

i have put a poll under each product photo so you can vote.

ready? let’s go!

toilet doggie water dish: this unique water bowl will keep your pet hydrated and will double as a hilarious conversation starter.

IMG_4248

protein ketchup: 15 grams of ketchup per dipper cup.

IMG_4243

BBQ brander: create a personalized meal by branding your initials on your food before you eat it.

IMG_4267

aquabells travel weights: these inflatable weights can be filled with water to achieve different weights. perfect for the fit minded traveler.

IMG_4268

hard boiled egg case: hate peeling hard boiled eggs? forget it! crack an egg into this contraption, then boil the contraption.. twist off the lid.. and voila! hard boiled egg with no shell.

IMG_4269

kitty box furniture: two birds with one stone? your cat box doubles as a handsome piece of furniture.

IMG_4271

swoop n scoop bowl: never eat soggy cereal again.. there is a compartment for the cereal and a compartment for the milk.. and a groovy handle.

IMG_4277

the marshmallow shooter: no description required.

IMG_4255

the frozen fruit soft serve processor: because simply using your food processor is too easy.. you need a specific device just for fruit.

IMG_4256

cell phone holder bracelet: never let your cell phone go missing again! wow. just, wow. and so fashionable, no?

IMG_4258

toothpaste tablets: dehydrated toothpaste. just pop one in and your saliva will activate it into a foam!

IMG_4259

grocery list generator: just speak your list into this device and it will itemize the list then print it out for you to take to the store.

IMG_4260

iron on hair crystals: for those special occasions.

IMG_4261

giraffe toilet paper holder: i hope you all say rad.

IMG_4262

box of applause OR box of laughter: sold separately.

IMG_4263

moustache mirror: ever wonder what you’d look like with a ‘stache?

IMG_4266

hope you had fun seeing these wacky products!

regular meals & moves posts will be coming later this week. for now, i am playing catch up because going out of town=lots of work upon returning home. speaking of returning home, we DID make it on the airplane on monday morning. marshall had to answer a series of questions and go through a special screening and he was able to travel without his identification. now you know—in case you ever lose YOUR wallet in the ocean—you will still be able to make your flight home. as long as you are really you and are prepared to answer a lot of questions about yourself and your past.

have a great day!

Q~

have you ever purchased an “AS SEEN ON TV!” item? what was it? or is there one you have your eye on?

my answers: insanity DVDs, the magic bullet, the perfect brownie pan (works so well!), the pediegg (doesn’t work), and we own a snuggie (it was a gift.)

Kristin @ STUFT Mama November 8, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Okay- these are too much! I like the toilet dog bowl the best! That BBQ brander is pretty cool too. I could be branding all my goodies with STUFT mama. LOL! Love this!
I bought a pancake popper pan that is pretty cool, but I only used it twice. oops. Where is that thing?

tj November 8, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Ok so I loved this post! I am looking forward to my flight this coming weekend so I can browse Sky Mall Mag! I actually did make a Sky Mall purchase a few years back. THE atomic watch….not certain it had THE, but I hope it did. My BF loves it and still wears it more than 5 years later so I guess it was a good investment. lol

PS- I know Danica was bummed that you didn’t make it to Foodbuzz, and I would have loved to have met you!! Maybe next year! :)

lynn @ the actor's diet November 8, 2011 at 5:02 pm

ya wanna know what’s REALLY ridiculous? i was just on a flight to vancouver and brought MY OWN catalogs to read (from TJ’s and the Vermont Country Store). woman next to me thought i was nuts, i’m sure.

natalie November 8, 2011 at 5:04 pm

man this post is AMAZING. best one yet dude.

who can resist those hair crystals?? so easy and CLA$$Y.

thanks for the giggles. ;)

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) November 8, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Not “THe portable sunshine??” So disappointing!
I loved voting- so much fun. And they stole our idea with the kitty litter furniture- Theirs is a little cuter than ours though :-)

Lauren @ What Lauren Likes November 8, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Bahaha this post was amazing! So funny :)

Courtney November 8, 2011 at 5:25 pm

OMG! I voted with my husband – this is the funniest shizz ever! Hidden litter box, buahahaha! Blame the stink on them!

Tara @ Sweat like a Pig November 8, 2011 at 5:34 pm

I love the idea of the aqua bells! Everything else seems crazy… haha

Where did you download your online timer from? I’m actually looking for one at the moment as my chiropractor told me I need to get up once every 30 minutes, and I keep losing track!

janetha November 9, 2011 at 2:26 pm
Laura November 8, 2011 at 5:59 pm

I definitely own a snuggie! I also want the blanket with the foot pocket from Skymall. My feet always come untucked!

I bought my husband the meat brand one year for Christmas. He loves it. Also branded our new deck.

Krissie J November 8, 2011 at 6:03 pm

I’ve never purchased an As Seen on TV item, but I would totally buy that moustache mirror and the marshmallow cannon. I’m clearly juvenile. Haha.

Betty November 8, 2011 at 6:15 pm

my mom probably owns everything and anything you have seen on tv. i’ve bought insanity and turbofire (which i hated and returned) the puppy pedicure thing (why can’t i think of the name) and i think that’s. i always wanted a snuggie, but no one would ever buy me one..

and i love that giraffe! 1: i hate having to change the toilet paper roll, so i will always have a holder that it slips right on and off. 2: barbara loves anything of that nature and our bedroom (which is in storage until we have a real house) is all elephants and giraffes.

Evan Thomas November 8, 2011 at 6:23 pm

Ketchup should not have 15 grams of protein. That’s just ridiculous. That’s more than some protein bars I know of.

Tiffany November 8, 2011 at 7:08 pm

I’m always in shock by how much they are charging for SkyMall items. All I gotta say is don’t drink and SkyMall. I ended up ordering a few useless things for oh about $200. Thumbs down.

I am still contemplating buying pajama jeans–it’s the best of both worlds!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga November 8, 2011 at 7:14 pm

have you ever purchased an “AS SEEN ON TV!” item? what was it? = yes, Miracle Blade knives. Honestly I don’t really use the actual miracle blade knives tons but they came with a free set of steak knives and I dont eat steak either but I use those dozen knives ALL the time for slicing things and throw them in the dishwasher, something I wouldnt do with a henckles knife or a wusthof. 10 yrs later they are still going strong!

Kerryne November 8, 2011 at 7:21 pm

Made my day! I love this post. Some of the things people come up with are RIDICULOUS! Ha ha ha!

Denise November 8, 2011 at 7:22 pm

I have a friend that has one of those Eggie things and LOVES it.

Emily November 8, 2011 at 7:23 pm

I live for plane rides and Sky Mall Magazine! Some of the ideas are insane, but others are quite genius and I’m jealous I didn’t think of it first.
I’ve never bought an AS SEEN ON TV! item, but I always browse that section at Bed, Bath, and Beyond!

Jennie (the gf-gf) November 8, 2011 at 7:30 pm

These are so great! I needed a good laugh, so the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. My favorite is the toothpaste tablets – sounds gross, but also brilliant!

Lindsay @ biking before bed November 8, 2011 at 7:43 pm

I did a skymall post last week too… the protein ketchup and mustache mirror were definitely featured. My other favorites were the periogi Christmas ornament and the automatic closing toilet lid.

Elaine November 8, 2011 at 7:46 pm

the protein ketchup for some reason made me want to vomit a little, same as the toothpaste tabs, ugh! the doggy toilet h2o bowl – that’s just teaching your dog it’s ok to drink from a toilet shaped bowl! no bueno, but hilarious! i like the cat box furniture thing – functional! and the water weights – cool idea!

i’ve purchased the magic bullet (broke and i would not buy again), ab roller (remember that?), the perfect pull-up (boyfriend’s purchase), and my parents bought those miracle blade knives (still have them!).

BroccoliHut November 8, 2011 at 7:47 pm

My first as-seen-on-TV purchase was the Magic Bullet–I must have watched that informercial 20 times before I actually bought one!
I have an Eggies set too:)

Christin@purplebirdblog November 8, 2011 at 7:56 pm

I was actually super pissed that my flight to San Fran had no SkyMall magazines on it, wtf?!

Lyndsey November 8, 2011 at 8:05 pm

I always go looking for ‘The Garden Yeti’ in the sky mall magazine whenever I fly. Thanks for the hilarious reminder of the awesomeness that is sky mall.

I have always been intrigued by the baby bullet (despite being childless and happy to be that way) because of the dating system! It’s genius!

Linda November 8, 2011 at 8:12 pm

I actually have the grocery list maker. I love it.
I’m planning on buying the box of applause for my husband for Christmas. I think he’ll get a kick out of it.

Meg November 8, 2011 at 8:25 pm

I’ve come to the conclusion that Sky Mall is put on planes for entertainment purposes only.

Morgan @ Life After Bagels November 8, 2011 at 9:57 pm

I voted RAD for everything!!!!!!!!!

Kristina @ spabettie November 8, 2011 at 11:30 pm

um… protein ketchup? I’m scared. now I must go find out what’s in it…

I want the marshmallow shooter, the box of laughter and the water weights. (honestly the weights are a rad idea, I think!).

I have a Snuggie (so does Basil, surprised??) and a pedegg. I use the Snuggie.

Erica November 9, 2011 at 1:58 am

Omg- protein ketchup? Hilarious! Love that catalog. We have a magicbullet-its. Awesome

Jessica Ann November 9, 2011 at 2:55 am

This is literally the best post I have read about anything ever.

melissanibbles November 9, 2011 at 3:12 am

Get me the banjo stat!

Sarah November 9, 2011 at 4:29 am

Pretty much everything in Sky Mall is absolutely ridiculous! But very entertaining to look through.

cathy@1970kikiproject November 9, 2011 at 5:05 am

glad you guys made it home with no delays, j!
i’ve never purchased anything from on tv…everything i have seen is so horribly bad!!
the cereal bowl – very interesting…although i like how cereal morphs from crunchy to soggy over the course eating the bowl!

Hope @ With A Side Of Hope November 9, 2011 at 5:25 am

I love this post! The highlight of any airplane flight is browsing through the Sky Mall catalog! Do people really buy these things?! Some of them are absolutely hilarious and crazy! I really like how everything has the word, “the” in front of it.

I’ve purchased the snuggie, and those hanger things. It extends the hangers and makes them longer so you can hang like 3 or 4 different things on them.

Susan November 9, 2011 at 5:58 am

The best part of going through these things was seeing was the majority of your readers voted for. I am surprised so many people were offended by the cell phone bracelet, and yet so supportive of the luxury cat box!

Lindsay Wright November 9, 2011 at 6:43 am

WAY too many to comment on! Most pretty lame – but I’m a sucker for lame stuff. Wondering what Deb thinks of the cat house one?

Emily November 9, 2011 at 7:17 am

I attended a Yankee Swap Christmas Party last year (everyone brings a gift and you open them in a certain order and can ‘trade’ with others if theirs is cooler…) and the theme was AS SEEN ON TV.. Literally the funniest party ever!!! And of the 20+ people there, there wasnt a single duplicate gift!

Christin November 9, 2011 at 8:34 am

Thanks for letting me tag along through your sky mall read…that was “rad” :)

seriously, some of that stuff is crazy…but I have to say even though most people are voting “ridiculous” for the toothpaste tablets, as an Invisalign wearer who has to take a tube of toothpaste in her purse EVERYWHERE those would actually come in handy for me…less chance of a toothpaste mess in my purse, for sure!

I have a snuggie (perfect for at my desk at work in the mornings!) and also I seriously considered getting pajama jeans the other day…even though they seem horrible, I just want them to wear around the house or go grocery shopping in, ya know? :)

Jenna Z November 9, 2011 at 10:00 am

If that protein ketchup was sugar free (and artificial sweetener free), I’d totally buy it! Hello! Right now I can’t find ANY ketchup that is sugar free and art. sweetener free, if they came out with one WITH protein, I’d be all over it! For now, we’ll just make our own.

Nicole C November 9, 2011 at 10:00 am

I don’t think I ever realized that I own/owned an ‘as seen on tv’ item! The first one that came to mind, a bagel cutter. My Grandma thought it would be a great christmas gift since I saw it in a ‘as seen on tv’ catalog. Voila, instant gift! Ended up not working out so well so I put the bagel in my hand and sliced away with the knife. Yep, cut my hand open. Not my brightest moment.

Oh and my aunt got Roxy a snuggy. Nothing ever fits dachshunds correctly I tell ya!

Now I will always notice the “the” in those, never have before. You are so clever. Love the mustache mirror btw. And finally, on my way back from Philly I left two magazines behind for the next flight, and added the you are beautiful logo for operation beautiful.

Cassy November 9, 2011 at 11:03 am

i would like THE mustahce mirror!

I have bought a nose/ear hair trimmer for an ex before. It didn’t do much- but i think it save a uni-brow or 2 of mine!
He bought me ‘THE ABTRONIC’. It shocked me pretty bad one day and haven’t worn it since.
We were in highschool and completely clueless at the time of these purchases.

Yolie @ Practising Wellness November 9, 2011 at 11:39 am

I really really want that frozen fruit soft serve processor – that is totally RAD! :-D xyx

Kait November 9, 2011 at 11:51 am

I love absolutely everything about this post. And now I want a giraffe TP holder. Tehehe

Brian William November 9, 2011 at 12:32 pm

When I looked through the SkyMall catalog and saw the *banjo* for sale, I immediately thought to myself, “Hey, I’ve been meaning to learn how to play banjo for years! Why don’t I buy one from the catalog on the airplane!” Wait, that’s not right. I can’t imagine *anybody* thinking that!

Miriam November 9, 2011 at 1:51 pm

hahaha for “the sit fit trainer” that’s truly ridiculous, I wonder how I should be sitting for it to work on my abs… or work anything actually!! Loved the poll, very entertaining! :)

Tee @ She Writes, Bites, and Window Shops November 9, 2011 at 2:22 pm

Haha, gotta love Sky Mall! This was a highly enjoyable post. I also have a Snuggie (also a gift) – love it!

LauraJayne November 9, 2011 at 2:39 pm

I’m pretty positive I need half of these product. This post made my day. I was busy feeling all sorts of sorry for myself, and now I don’t. I also have a burning desire for a giraffe toliet paper holder and laugh box.

Katie November 9, 2011 at 3:37 pm

I flipping love Sky Mall. I always tell myself I’m going to get off the plane and go order some cool gadgets, but the minute I’m at my destination, I forget.

I also love saying (or reading) Hammacher Schlemmer.

Parita @ myinnershakti November 9, 2011 at 4:34 pm

About every 3-4 flights on Delta, I go through the Skymall magazine. Some of that stuff is ridiculous but fun to read about!

meg November 9, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Who are these people who come up with these random things? And who are the people who actually buy them. If I had unlimited expendable income, I’d totally buy the dog bed and the marshmallow shooter!

elise November 10, 2011 at 6:05 pm

i love looking through those crazy mags. marshmallow shooter???
