the dirty dash.

by Janetha on September 18, 2011

in eating out,love life

yesterday morning i woke up bright and early at 6 AM. so early for a saturday. well, so early for any day, but especially a saturday.

image

i ate a mishmash of greek yogurt, sliced banana, protein powder, mighty maple peanut butter, uncooked oats, rolled dates, slivered almonds and almond milk (yeah, so random) and then hit the road.

i met up with kristen & lindsay and we headed up to soldier hollow—the location for our dirty dash 10k mud run!

IMG_4471

we had some time to kill before our race time (the teams started in waves) so we hung out and watched them fill the MASSIVE mud pits with water. gulp.

IMG_4457IMG_4452IMG_4461

momma b came up before we started to wish us luck. she’s the best!

IMG_0426

we gathered with our team for a couple pre-race (CLEAN) photos.

IMG_0427

game faces? sure, ok.

IMG_0430

ready to run!

IMG_0429

now, you may recall my initial complaints about the dirty dash. i talked about how kristen had roped me into doing the race. i originally thought it was a 5k, and later found out that it was in fact a 10k, and basically flipped my lid. i was SO nervous for this race.. i had no idea how i would complete it. i honestly was dreading it right up until the very start.

what do i wear? what if i slow everyone down? what if i can’t get over the obstacles? what if i die? okay, that last one is a little dramatic. but i was seriously obsessing over this race way more than i should have.

and then, we started. and it was SO fun. we ran for a bit and then came to the first obstacle: crossing a mud-covered balance beam that had a trench of muddy water below.

i waited my turn, crossed the beam and then served myself a huge slice of humble pie. i was having an absolute blast and couldn’t fathom ever being nervous because it was such a good time.

there was quite a bit of ground to cover between each obstacle—mainly hills. some were steeper than others, but the steep uphills made for a fun jaunt downhill.

the obstacles were the parts where we’d get dirty. there after the balance beams, there were several bails of hay to hop over, followed by muddy tunnels we had to crawl through, then some tall walls to scale. the walls were probably the hardest of all the obstacles, but we had some awesome guys on our team that helped the ladies hop over the walls that were extra tall.

the longest obstacle was a winding stretch of waist-high swamp water. it was cold and smelly, but soon enough it was over. the tail-end of the race contained more hills to conquer, but it’s like kristen said: by the time we were tired from running, it was time for another obstacle so we were able to catch our breath while waiting our turn for the obstacle. the remaining obstacles were a tall net wall, a bunch of pipes to hop over (or go under if you chose), another small balance beam, a rope swing, a loooong inflated slide and the final mud pools right before the finish line.

marshall had come to watch us finish the race, and he spotted us before we hopped into the mud pools. my mom snapped a few photos of us as we finished up that last obstacle.

climbing over..

IMG_0431

about to jump into the next one..

IMG_0436

woohoo!

IMG_0432

jumping into the mud pools was for sure my favorite part.

finished!

IMG_0437IMG_0438

i really wanted to hug him and get him extra muddy, but i held back.

IMG_0443

fierce?

IMG_0446

a new kind of mud mask.

IMG_0451

our team! everyone was so fun to run with!

IMG_0447

we waited in a REAL long line for a warm, high pressure shower which was totally worth the wait.

IMG_0457

after cleaning off, i went back to see my mom snapping photos of my sister and brother in law, who had just finished the race.

IMG_0462

i said it would be fun to get the whole fam to do the run next year—marshall was QUICK to shut down that idea. hey, you can’t win them all.

by the time all was said and done, it was almost 1 o’clock and i was STARVING! marshall and i headed to a new-to-us café in park city: the eating establishment.

IMG_4487

i ordered the park city omelette (subbed egg whites only).

IMG_4474

it was amazing! the avocado was perfectly ripe and the seasoning on the potatoes packed just the right amount of heat.

IMG_4482

marshall ordered the huevos rancheros and he said they were the best he’s tried in a long time! you could call him a huevos rancheros connoisseur, I suppose.

i cleaned my plate, headed home and took a nice long nap.

the dirty dash was way better than i had ever imagined. i feel silly for making such a fuss about it now, but hey.. live and learn, right? i think going out there and doing something you’d never usually do is a good thing. i need to go outside my comfort zone more often because there are probably a lot of things i have never tried that i would love.

big, huge thank you to my best friend kristen for asking me to participate in the dirty dash with her. she never lets me down and is my best friend for a reason! love you, kris.

well, this post is lengthy, so i will have to recap jessica’s bachelorette party next time.

enjoy your monday!

Qs~

1. what is the last thing you did that was outside of your comfort zone?

2. are there any food items/dishes that you consider yourself a connoisseur of?

Ahh, the Dirty Dash looks like it was so much fun! I love the mud photos. :)

We have a race here in Richmond called the Muddy Buddy. I keep meaning to sign up for it, but miss it each year.

Lindsay September 18, 2011 at 11:41 pm

yay for the dirty dash!! so much fun! i love the photos! :)

Carrie@shrinkingcarrie September 18, 2011 at 11:46 pm

You looked like you had a LOT of fun! The last thing I did to get out of my comfort zone would be started doing spin classes, and started a weight lifting program where I have to hang out in the big boy part of the gym. I was a stress ball before I started the program, but now I am almost 2 months in and realized that I had nothing to worry about!
Unfortunately, I am a ranch dressing connoisseur. But I have pretty much given it up since I started trying to live healthier. Ah well, maybe I’ll find a healthy substitute and become and expert in that instead!

Julia September 18, 2011 at 11:47 pm

What an awesome race (and after race meal!).

last thing I did outside my comfort zone…well I flew to China by myself and got to my hotel (granted it was in a car arranged by Tyler) by myself.

I’m kind of a bagel connoisseur…or maybe just a bagel snob.

Eden September 18, 2011 at 11:51 pm

I think I’m afriad of getting dirty. But maybe thats a good reason for me to do something like this. Like you said, “live and learn”….
When you said you were gonna do this, first thing I thought was, “what is she going to wear?” hahaha. Cause whatever you do, you will be smeared in a poo-like substance.

Hmmm should I play by the rules and answer the questions?
Ill do the last one.
I think you know what it is: ICE CREAM!!!!!

momma b. September 19, 2011 at 12:05 am

What a great experience …I told you it would be fun! I had a good time staying clean and taking photos!

I’m pretty good with tiramisu judging!

xo

Amanda September 19, 2011 at 12:13 am

mmm mud! I’m totally freaked out to do a mud run because I am a baby about dirt. But everytime sometime posts a recap of their mud run, I want to join in! The photos look like so much fun.

Did your shoes get messed up? Did you wear old ones? So curious how this works.

I am a connoisseur of turkey avocado sandwiches. Weird? Totally.

Janetha September 19, 2011 at 12:39 am

SO AM I! we should eat one together :)

i tossed my shoes. i wore old ones! they wash them and donate them.

Kristina @ spabettie September 19, 2011 at 12:25 am

you ROCK, Janetha! these always sound so fun to me, but… how deep are those mud pools? :)

Janetha September 19, 2011 at 12:40 am

well i am a shorty at 5’1″ and they never went above my waist!

Kristina @ spabettie September 19, 2011 at 1:12 am

oh, cool – I could do that!!

Meg September 19, 2011 at 12:26 am

I really want to do the dirty dash some year. The one in Boise was a couple of weeks ago and I was sad I didn’t sign up. I wonder if I could convince the hubbs to do it with me… I betcha I could!

The last time I went outside my comfort zone was doing hot yoga! I haven’t done much non-hot yoga, so it was a BIG step going for the gusto and trying the class. My instructor was great though and I felt the class was very rewarding– I’m going back tuesday!

Becky @ The Bex Factor September 19, 2011 at 12:28 am

Ah! That looks so fun! I’m glad you ended up enjoying it. I had so much fun doing my Spartan Sprint (5km) last month, but this one looks way more dirty and fun.

RunEatRepeat September 19, 2011 at 12:54 am

I knew it!!! You totally rock :)

Erica September 19, 2011 at 1:43 am

So fun! Love the muddy pics!! Having a baby was wayy outside my comfort zone

Tara @ Sweat like a Pig September 19, 2011 at 1:54 am

When I did the Warrior Dash in February I was way more muddy than this! They had one section where you had to actually swim through mud. I got muddy pretty much straight away but my husband was being a baby and actually walking around the obstacles so he wouldn’t get dirty. At the end he had no choice! Haha it was also quite cold and we had to line up to shower under a hose. That was not fun!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga September 19, 2011 at 2:07 am

are there any food items/dishes that you consider yourself a connoisseur of? =
I WROTE in my blog post earlier that I am a connoisseur of edamame. I was noting that different brands taste different. Mushier, sweeter, thinner skins, etc. I got all geeky about it but it’s true, I am a conno of it.

That, and, brownies, cookies, and desserts :)

cathy September 19, 2011 at 5:52 am

first off, CONGRATS on your race! i loved seeing the photos – i’ve never tried a dirty dash (there is one in my city, too) and that is wonderful that you had so much fun. such a sunny day!
on friday even i went to a lecture “the future of science.” not as geeky as it sounds as it was held in a nightclub! that is outside my comfort zone as i am definitely more in touch with my artsy/creative side. glad i went, though!
i know my cereals!!

Alta September 19, 2011 at 6:02 am

yay! So glad you had fun. My Jailbreak run was great. Way muddier than yours it looks like. But only 5k which I was fine with. I’m proud of us and our first mud runs! Are you ready to do another one? I am. I wanna do Warrior Dash in April here.

I think I pretty much am a complete brownie snob. They are my favorite dessert but they have to be just right – chewy edges and fudgy middle.

Susan September 19, 2011 at 6:05 am

Girl I am so darn proud of you! Everything about this was new – the obstacles, not knowing the length until later, the MUD. You rolled with the punches and rocked it out. You brought your awesome attitude to it and that’s why I adore you. I don’t know how well I would have fared with the swamp water!

This may sound strange, but I feel like there are times every day where I step out of my comfort zone. I try to challenge myself a bit each day, because what’s best for me is sometimes at odds with what I want to do or feel like I need to do. That sounds so vague, but I don’t know how else to put it!

Chocolate connoisseur, for sure.

lindsay September 19, 2011 at 6:53 am

way to go JG! We all knew you could do it and you’ve got such a great support team too. Those races are loads of fun! Minus the random mud left in places. tee-hee

Lauren September 19, 2011 at 6:58 am

Oh girl, what an awesome race! I have always wanted to do a mud race but for some reason, I can’t get enough courage. It just seems so fierce!

Lindsay @ bikingbefore bed September 19, 2011 at 7:06 am

I’ve been debating signing up for the mud run in Houston next month. My cousin has been raving about the one he did last spring. I think I may do it! I consider myself a fish taco expert :)

Susan September 19, 2011 at 8:01 am

Sorry I’m so immature, but reading “fish taco expert” totally cracked me up!

Heather September 19, 2011 at 7:51 am

These mud runs are so popular right now – I want to do one!!!
I kinda consider myself an expert on banana bread. :)

Heather (Heather's Dish) September 19, 2011 at 7:59 am

that sounds so fun! and i’m glad you had a blast rather than hating it the whole time :)

i’d like to say i’m a huevos rancheros connoisseur as well…they have to be done well or don’t do them at all!

Susan September 19, 2011 at 8:00 am

I am so happy you ended up having fun!! And I knew 10k would be totally doable for you, even if you don’t think of yourself as a runner ;) I live in a hick county now, so the only dirty dashes we have around here involve four-wheelers and two-fours. In other words, off-roading and beer.

Lee September 19, 2011 at 8:05 am

I knew you would like it! I was scared before I did the Warrior Dash but then I loved it and made Jason promise he’d do it with me next year.

I’ve been to the Eating Establishment! I got very excited to see a restaurant in your post that I’ve been to! It doesn’t happen often considering I’ve been to Utah for a whole 4 days in my life.

katie September 19, 2011 at 8:06 am

LOVE it!
I would love the mud pools part the best! I have always wanted to do that, just jump in a big mud pool and get dirty, haha! Maybe one day !

Glad you had fun! Love you!

Jennyb September 19, 2011 at 8:44 am

Outside my comfort zone has been starting college recently, too many people for my liking! I think mud like that though might be out of my comfort zone too. I don’t mind getting in the garden & worked with horses for years, but thats a little different to practically swimming in it! Well Done!

As for being a connoisseur – i have tried a lot of Traditional English Bread Pudding (different from a bread pudding in america) from different bakeries previously so i have a good idea of when the spicing is right, whether its too soggy or dry, if there’s enough dried fruit – oh & i hate peel in mine! Luckily my local bakery makes it perfectly. Although their portions/slices are large enough for 2!

Laura (LunaChickRuns) September 19, 2011 at 8:50 am

That race looks like it was a blast!

I am a self-proclaimed connoisseur of frozen custard. Mmmmmm!

Kerryne September 19, 2011 at 8:50 am

Oh my gosh… I am SO jealous. That looks like it was a BLAST. I am hitting it up next time it comes around FOR SURE!

Holly @ The Runny Egg September 19, 2011 at 9:18 am

That race looks awesome and I’m glad you had fun!!! I hope to do one of those mud races one day.

Tiffany September 19, 2011 at 10:22 am

Love Love Love! This is so awesome–congrats to you for going through with it even though it was longer than originally thought!

The last thing I did was take a train to Venice and tour it alone. My friend was supposed to come with me but she was feeling under the weather so I went solo and absolutely loved traveling alone.

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List September 19, 2011 at 11:10 am

“i need to go outside my comfort zone more often because there are probably a lot of things i have never tried that i would love”
– having babies, congo line dancing, traveling to NC, eating tator tots dipped in ice cream.
Glad you had a blast! told you you’d do great!

Janetha September 20, 2011 at 11:14 am

mmmmm tots and ice creammmm

Katy (The Singing Runner) September 19, 2011 at 11:12 am

Looks like a BLAST! I would love to do one of those type of races!!! :)

Bonnie September 19, 2011 at 11:15 am

Way to go! I knew you’d rock it (and hoped you’d have a blast doing it)… like you said, live and learn when it comes to new experiences. Truth! The last thing out of my comfort zone was going to the HLS – didn’t know people, wasn’t sure how I’d be received, traveled alone and had some INCREDIBLE new experiences – and met you! Our sailing trip recently was also an adventure we’d never led before, but we’re learning to be more comfortable in the uncomfortable these days. ;)

As for being a food connoisseur, I probably only have the title of “coffee snob” to hold up high. ;)

Love the photos, esp the one of you kissing Marshall! Glad it was an awesome event.

Abby September 19, 2011 at 11:17 am

That looks like SO MUCH FUN! I need to keep my eyes peeled for one around me.

Also…the alarm…. just like me.

Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning September 19, 2011 at 11:36 am

This looks like SO MUCH FUN!! I love the photos!! I’ve always wanted to do one of the mud races (we have a few different ones each year around here) but just never have. I think that getting muddy would be the best part! Congrats on finishing and actually having a good time!!
And oh man- there’s nothing better than a big breakfast after a race (and having the whole rest of the day ahead of you!!).
Love this post!

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather September 19, 2011 at 11:41 am

What a blast! I think it’s way cool that you got to do a 10k… Twice as much fun as a 5k dirty dash! I did a race like this in the spring… So much fun!!

Lindsay@ In Sweetness and In Health September 19, 2011 at 12:31 pm

Oh my gosh that looks like so much fun!! I’m not sure of the last thing that was out of my comfort zone, but in a few weeks I’ll be doing my first race- a 10k and that is definitely out of my comfort zone!

Paige @ Running Around Normal September 19, 2011 at 12:38 pm

That’s awesome that you were able to relax and have a blast, Janetha:) I NEED to do one of these. Yes, it’s necessary! I think a group race would be the way to go!

Trainer Kjirsten @ Balanced Healthy Life September 19, 2011 at 12:38 pm

That looks like so much fun! I debated doing one a few years back but never got around to signing up for it! I’m glad they are becoming more popular, I’m seeing them all over recently!

Naomi(onefitfoodie) September 19, 2011 at 12:57 pm

i would say I am a connesiour of OATS! haha not really but I jus tlove them and have them every single morning ohh and also banana bread! whenever we have a family event or gathering my mom begs me to make my banana bread!!

that raced looked like it was SO much fun!! i am so glad you had a great time and whats to worry, right!? I had a friend who did the warrior dash a couple weeks ago and LOVED it! so much fun, he wants to do more! its always fun to get out of you rcomfort zone…HELLO FITNESS COMPETITION!

Amy September 19, 2011 at 12:58 pm

that looks SO fun!!

Christin September 19, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Oh my gosh, the Dirty Dash looks like it was so much fun!!!

The last thing I did outside of my comfort zone was post a video for Lindsay’s blog :)

I am a total self proclaimed connoisseur of chocolate chip cookies…I have been making variations since I was little, so I am really particular about how I make them and how they should taste…

Cheers!

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats September 19, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Glad you ended up having such a great time at the race! I don’t go out of my comfort zone very often either. I think the last thing was deciding that I need to stop worrying about what other people think about what I post on my blog. I have always been afraid of judgment from others and I need to learn not to care so much.

Yolie @ Practising Wellness September 19, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Oooh my gosh, that race looks absolutely insane and SOOO much fun…love getting muddy, lol! Congratulations for being awesome and running (wading/climbing/crossing!) such and intense and what you thought was scary race – AMAZING! :-D xyx

Tamizn September 19, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Hahahahah That looks like so much fun! x x

Christine September 19, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Weird! I did the Warrior Dash in Wisconsin this past weekend. It was a 5k with 10 obstacles along the way.. and we were COVERED in mud.. head to toe. Such a blast and finished better than I thought! yeay! Yours looks just as fun!

Brynne September 19, 2011 at 3:54 pm

That sounds so fun! I want to do one now!

Trisha September 19, 2011 at 4:04 pm

This makes me excited! Looks like you loved it. I’m so glad!

Marie September 19, 2011 at 5:03 pm

Call me crazy, but these mud races seem like so much fun! Of course, that’s probably easy to say from the sidelines. ;) Great jpb and glad you had so much fun! ;)

Ali Mc September 19, 2011 at 6:07 pm

dirty dash looks so much fun!!!! It is kinda survivor-esq, which makes me want to do it :D YAY! you looked surprisingly clean for 10k of mud. lol I am so happy for you that the shower afterwards was HOT!!! running tonight can’t wait!
