heyo! how’s it going? glad you guys liked my balls. they’re tasty, hope you try them.
happy birthday to my cat, blue! he’s up in cat heaven eating butter. he loved to eat butter when he was alive, but it made him sneeze because he was allergic to milk. i know, a cat allergic to milk? poor guy.
today has been jam packed with a plethora of things. i had a dentist appointment this morning which i was suuuuper excited for. i LOVE the dentist and getting my teeth cleaned!
i thought i was the only on who loved the dentist, but after tweeting my post-teeth-cleaning excitement, i got a bunch of replies from fellow dental fanatics…
who knew? yay for dentist lovers.
actually, it had been a year since i last visited the dentist. WAY too long if you ask me! i usually get a cleaning twice a year like clockwork, but with the marriage and the move i let time get the best of me. some people i know never go to the dentist—they say it is too expensive—but they will spend $100 every 12 weeks to get their hair done. i don’t get the logic, your teeth are way more important than your hair in my opinion!
i don’t have dental insurance because i think it’s a waste of money. my teeth are in good shape and i don’t have much to worry about. i went to a new dentist today, actually, and signed up for a super affordable plan they offer. it was $129 for a year and that includes two checkups, two cleanings, an annual xray session, two fluoride treatments and 25% off any work done (fillings, crowns, etc.) since i was paying $150 for one set of xrays ALONE at my last dentist, i immediately signed up for this plan. it was a no brainer!
if you live in utah (his office is in bountiful) and are in the market for a great dentist for a great price, get at me and i will give you the details. and no, my dentist didn’t hit me up to type this. i actually just loved my appointment this morning and was really satisfied with the price and the work and i am all about spreading the word about great services!
so, some of you had asked me to do a post where i show the calories, macros, measurements and time, so i went to the effort today to track those aspects for you. here it is!
*edited to add that i am posting my meals only, not my morning supplements, pre- or post-workout supplements or anything eaten after dinner. this list is by no means a representation of the number of calories i consumed all day long, i just am giving you a breakdown of the actual meals eaten because people were curious about my typical meals.
before my appointment this morning, i had time to make breakfast and actually eat it at the kitchen table instead of in my car. it was a beautiful thing.
five egg whites + a jazz apple (175 grams) + 1 T mighty maple peanut butter @ 8 AM.
this clocked in at 250 calories, 8 grams of fat, 21 grams of protein and 34 grams of carbs. ohhh and 7 grams of fiber!
breakfast kept me surprisingly full for how low calorie it was. i kind of think the fluoride on my teeth may have had something to do with my desire to eat, though. breakfast was at 8 AM and i didn’t eat lunch until 1 PM!
1/2 cup canned garbanzo beans + 1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese + 1/2 tsp ranch seasoning served over a bed of lettuces, broccoli slaw & a chopped bell pepper topped with 2 T light italian dressing @ 1 PM.
so detailed! this was 420 calories, 11 grams of fat, 32 grams of protein, 49 grams of carbs and 12 grams of fiber. i also had an adora disc for my after lunch sweet tooth added calcium.
i worked a little late tonight—partially because it is month end and also because my dentist appointment cut into my morning at the office. i had my snack around five thirty.
3/4 cup plain 0% greek yogurt + one container of chobani champions verry berry greek yogurt + love grown foods simply oats granola @ 5:30 PM.
i like to mix the flavored yogurt with plain yogurt to amp up the protein content without upping the sugars and carbs too much. special thanks to tina for hooking me up with the love grown foods samples at HLS—i LOVE this granola! plus the single-serving packets i received=built in portion control. love that.
this snack clocked in at 320 calories, 6 grams of fat, 29 grams of protein, 38 grams of carbs and 2 grams of fiber.
after work, i headed to brody dezember’s studio to check out our family photo proofs. i think we picked a good one! luckily we won’t have to do family photos again until someone decides to have another baby and that shouldn’t be for awhile. knock on wood.
i rushed home, changed for the gym and pounded out a quick lower body workout. i am following jamie eason’s new training plan—more on that another day. maybe tomorrow? i want to tell you guys about it, i’m loving it so far.
i didn’t get home until about 8:30, so i scratched my labor intensive dinner plans and went with WAFFLES!
low carb coconut protein waffle + peanut flour paste + fresh raspberries @ 8:45 PM.
i used allie’s low carb pancake recipe, nixed the blackberries and added a little coconut extract. i forgot how much i love this recipe! side note, i really miss allie. side side note, amanda, this recipe is gluten free! i watered down 1 T of trader joe’s peanut flour to make a paste and drizzled it on the waffle along with 50 grams of mashed up fresh bear lake raspberries. SO good!
this was around 250 calories, 9 grams of fat, 22 grams of protien, 16 grams of carbs and 8 grams of fiber. love how fibrous coconut flour is! (it is the main ingredient of the waffle batter.)
i will eat one last time before calling it a night.. i usually eat five times a day. my last meal is something small, is usually sweet and contains protein powder or greek yogurt. still not sure what tonight will be!
hope you liked seeing the tracking, meal times, macros and calorie counts. it was a pain in the butt, but i did it all for you who asked.
i am glad i don’t track my meals like this daily anymore. it’s kind of a hassle. i am happy that i can rely on my eyeballing habits that i have perfected over the past three years, but it is nice to weigh and measure every once in awhile to keep things in check. it also keeps me from randomly grabbing handfuls of cereal, dried fruit, granola, crackers, chips, etc because i know i will have to track it and seeing the way those bites, licks and tastes add up really shocks and annoys me.
while i don’t count calories or macros on a regular basis, i do believe doing it periodically is a good idea for me. i know it seems obsessive and detrimental to some, but for others, it’s the only way to lose, gain or maintain their weight. i look at tracking my meals as a valuable tool but can only stand doing it maybe once a month.
good talk.
hasta luego!
Qs~
1. do you love or hate the dentist? how often do you go?
2. how often do you track your meals? never, sometimes or always? and what is your personal reason behind your answer?

Count me as another dentist lover! And the icing on the cake is that he’s CUTE. Actually, STUD is a better word. Yeah, I stare into his eyes dreamingly as he pokes around in my mouth. :-p
I’ve become an Adora disc addict since HLS. I have to consciously limit my consumption, otherwise I’d be clocking in around 300% RDA for calcium (and that’s not including the fortified almond milk, cottage cheese and regular cheese I down on a typical day!) Geesh.
Love love love coconut flour pancakes, but haven’t tried waffles because, well, I don’t have a waffle maker. :( The pancakes do the trick quite nicely though. No complaints. :)
hahah i know, when i first discovered them i’d eat 5 a day. that cannot be healthy…
I have been wanting to try calcium discs. Haven’t taken the plunge to buy them though! Do they taste vitamin-y?
I hardly ever go to the dentist. oops.
Right now, I’m counting calories. I’m trying to plan them out the night before. I don’t plan on doing this forever, but I feel like right now it’s a good idea because I’m trying to lose weight.
NO! They taste straight up like chocolate!
i used to love my dentist, until i got my first root canal recently. i don’t mind if i don’t see her (and her crazy ass bills) for a while
i have never had a root canal! knock on wood. you have GREAT teeth, lynn
Hmmm… which picture did you guys pick?!
the second pose by the trees where marsh and i are sitting against a tree! don’t worry, we picked the one that you were blinking in.
I totally miss Allie! Her blog rocked!
I like the clean feeling I get after leaving the dentist, but I hate the scraping feeling while my teeth are being cleaned! I always feel as if they’re chipping my teeth! haha I know, I’m paranoid.
haha that’s the part i love!
do you know whats funny.. I totally work for a dentist.. in the past 7 years I have actually been to the dentist.. once. I take x rays of my teeth every 6 months however to check to see if I have cavities. And Ill give myself a flouride tx every now and again.. haha!
gotta try those waffles!
that’s pretty ironic! i love getting cleanings.. i don’t know how you go without!
I don’t track anymore, either. Just eat when I’m hungry, which is working well! :)
It took me so long to get back to that. I do the same now, and find I am always hungry around the same times.
Dentist lover here-i live how clean my teeth feel and u swear they look better too right after a deep clean.
I keep a loose eye on calories day to day mainly because I need to make sure I eat enough-as a former anorexic I overestimate how much I’m eating sometimes-but I I’m sure I’ll be ratin ALOT of calories(such as on my occasional forays to the cheesecake factory) I say to hell with it.
I loosely track protein too since as a vegetarian it can be easy to not get enough…
They definitely look better!
JUST went to the dentist TODAY! I have to do NOT love it. I did get to watch an Ellen episode on th eceiling thought while my teeth got cleaned. :) But then I ate popcorn when I got home. That was dumb.
I don’t always keep track of everything I eat. I used to count every calorie, but now as a mom it’s just too time consuming, etc.
Dude! No ceiling TV here.
I agree! I always find it so odd when people dont go to the dentist. I am not a fan, but think its so important to go! Yummy greek yogurt snack and waffle dinner. I tracked a bit during pregnancy to make sure i was getting enough protein
Dude! your like huge on twitter! I bet twitter has asked you to get your account verified like all the celebrities. No one hardly ever replies to my tweets. Maybe everyone thinks I’ll bite their twitter head off if they make contact with me?
I hate getting my teeth cleaned but I love the feeling after. I guess kind of how I feel about exercise.
I don’t really track my meals be calorie counting or anything. I try to eat for the moment but I always like to have a little protein and some sort of fun food everyday. A piece of processed junk a day never hurt anybody.
I hate going to the dentist, but I love flossing, mouthwash, white strips, all that mouth shit. I even have that hook thing where you can get in deep and really scrape out the messes. Clean teeth are an obsession for me.
I eat 5 meals a day too. It’s a blessing/curse leftover from BFL.
It’s a blessing, I think. I love eating all day! ANd not having that weird mentality “don’t eat past 7 oclock” like a lot of people do. I eat right up until I crawl into bed. Plus our metabolism kick ass because of it.
I absolutely love getting my teeth cleaned! It feels so refreshing. I thought I was alone in this.
great deal at your new dentist, j! and i LOVE going to the dentist. probably helps that i’ve never had a cavity so have no negative experiences. i love the teeth cleaning. if i was very rich, i’d go once a week, i swear, to get my teeth cleaned. plus, my dentist’s office is on the ground floor of my condo building – can’t beat that commute!
Dude, I would go once a week with that commute! “Hi, dentist, just popping in for you to brush and floss my teeth for me today!”
Hi Janetha,
I got seriously addicted to your blog ;-)
I have a random body for life question for you: I read that the only things you’re allowed to drink are coffee and water. What about unsweetened tea? It doesn’t have any “hidden” calories. And what about coffee with milk? I’ll definitely die if I don’t have my coffee in the morning and I hate black coffee. Is it OK to add no-fat milk or soymilk?
Thanks for reading and for your nice comment! I drink my coffee black, but I know some people who add stevia to theirs to sweeten. As far as milk goes, I would stick with almond milk since it’s only 40 cals per 8 oz. However, if you absolutely want soy or skim milk, a few tablespoons isn’t going to derail you. I still added skim at first and then slowly weaned myself to drinking black. Fat free half and half found its way into my coffee mug now and then, too ;) Now days, since I am not doing BFL, I drink almond milk in my coffee a lot of times. Hope this helps!
I love going to the dentist and just posted about it last week when I went!
I go every 4 mos, no matter what. And yes, I pay out of pocket. Like you, I dont have dental insurance, I pay out of pocket but as i posted about, the $150 i spend is PREVENTATIVE and will save me tons down the road.
“but they will spend $100 every 12 weeks to get their hair done. i don’t get the logic, your teeth are way more important than your hair in my opinion!”— SO TRUE!!!
Or people who are “broke” but are buying new iphones, iphone apps, fancy exotic foods from WFs that are $8.99 for a tiny bag of this or that…it’s all about choices girl. Don’t get me started!
gosh I miss Allie too! I keep buggin her to come back, hmm, maybe thats why she’s not. haha.
Not only do I love my dentist, but he is a cutie. I love getting cleanings too.
;)
Cute dentists FTW!
Okay, I hate the dentist but for good reason. After my devastating life ruining occurrences with the oral surgeon, I’ve had more mouth troubles than one would ever think possible. Now that I am forever paralyzed on the side of my face, the sensitivity in my mouth is unbearable when I get poked. Oy, but I do like my particular dentist so I guess that’s good.
Yikes. OK, you have a pass. You can hate the dentist!
I don’t mind the dentist. I’ve had so much work done that it doesn’t bother me one bit. I try to get in there every 6 months or so for a cleaning. Sometimes I stretch it to 9 depending on what life is throwing at me!
I have really sensitive teeth and gums, so the last time I went to the dentist, I spent the entire time almost in tears because it hurt so bad. THey actually had to spread numbinb cream across my gums. It was not fun.
Owch!!
i love the dentist too! i go as often as i can – 2x a year according to my insurance (which i get through work for super cheap). i got a new dentist recently and i love her!
Totally wish my work offered insurance!
I don’t love going to the dentist, but I do it, I have had problems such as teeth crowding, cavities, and the braces : p so it has never been a fun dentist visit for me! I also have very sensitive gums like Chelsey said she does, not fun!
Loving the waffle! I had pumpkin pancakes this morning, might make a pumpkin waffle for tomorrow!
xoxo <3
I bought some pumpkin to bust out in the kitchen this weekend :) yay!
Love and Hate the dentist. Love white teeth and the clean feeling, hate pain and twinges.
That breakfast looks fab! Cannot believe its nutritionals. I am really good at tracking and eating healthy for breakfast and lunch, but I get too lazy after work to do dinner. Thanks for linking that waffle recipe, cannot wait to try it
I feel the same way. I will often track my bfast and then say to hell with it hahaha
i actually don’t mind the dentist…i love that it gets me out of work, but i don’t love being told to floss better all the time! twice a day and with a lower retainer still means plaque for this girl!
I know, work went by so fast yesterday since I got in at 10!
my uncle is actually my dentist so, although it’s always nice to see him, it’s kind of awkward having the guy I’ve seen dance around drunk off of spiked egg nog at the Christmas party reaching in to my mouth and poking me with Novocain.
hi.lar.i.ous.
1200 calories? are you dieting? that seems like so little and dangerous? Ive always been told that women need 2000 a day even when they arent working out….
No not dieting! Building muscle, actually. After my fifth meal, I ended around 1800 calories which is a lot for my small 5’1″ frame. I didnt show my pre or post workout shakes (noxplodw before, muscle armor and whey protein after) and there’s also another 150 calories from supplements! I only showed my meals because the other stuff is boring.
This was an interesting post…thanks for including the meal tracking breakdown! I’m trying to start eating more protein and fat and I think it would help to track for a few days. Thanks for the meal ideas!
I’m sure you’ve answered this before but what website are you using to track your calories/protein/etc?
Thedailyplate.com :)
That reminds me that I really need to make a Dentists appt. Good point about the whole hair and teeth comparison. Teeth are definitely more important than hair. (then again my hair hasn’t been done since January, so it may be time to make a couple of appt’s.)
I do Weight Watchers so I track my food everyday. Because of yo-yo dieting in the past I will have to track my food for the rest of my life in order to lose and maintain. I’ve come to terms with it. Even if I try and keep track in my head, I have to get it logged or else I will forget and wonder why I haven’t lost.
Me, too, on Weight Watchers + tracking + lifetime commitment.
i haven’t had my teeth cleaned in 1.5yrs :( i need to do it! i don’t really track since it’s sort of a lazy factor paired with who would need to measure heaps of veggies+protein which compose most of my meals. the other stuff that isn’t so healthy is usually pretty small so i’m not sweating it. i know somedays i probably undereat and others overeat calorically speaking so it all balances out. i just listen to hunger and go with it!
1. Dentists … I have not yet found one that isn’t either abrasive or sadistic. Anyone in southeastern NH with a recommendation?
2. Tracking … I track everything, of late, and I am learning so much about my horribly skewed idea of portions. Eek. I’m also learning that tracking combined with correct portion sizes equals weight loss. Win!
I miss Allie to – I love her recipes!
I hate the dentist – I once was not completely numb and the drill hit a nerve. The sound of that thing gives me panic attack and I have to take Valium when I go.
Thanks for the macro/calorie breakdown. I track my calories meticulously (weigh in grams) but I don’t pay as much attention to the macros as I probably should. I just like knowing as close ad possible how much I’m taking in so that I don’t bounce any checks so to speak! I treat my intake like a bank account and dont want to be overdrawn!
Love that analogy :)
I can’t believe there are so many dentist lovers. I hate it. It’s just an awkward experience. It doesn’t help that my dentist wants to know all about my life and asks questions the entire time.
Janetha, I don’t normally comment but your blog is the first I read each and every morning. This post could not have come at a better time! I totally overindulged last night (to the point of a stomachache – oops!) and this is just the motivation needed to get back at it. :)
I bought a container of egg whites partially because they are a staple for you, and partially to mix with regular eggs. Would you mind sharing how you cook yours?
I am glad this post was good for yoU! I aim to please, haha. I cook my egg whites two ways.
one: stovetop. heat a skillet (i use cast iron but any will do) over medium heat, spray with cooking spray. in a bowl, whisk egg whites well then pour into heated skillet and sprinkle on salt and pepper. cook until edges firm up then flip over with a spatula.. or scramble.. whatever.. until cooked through.
two: microwave. whisk egg whites, salt and pepper in a microwave safe bowl THAT HAS BEEN SPRAYED with cooking spray BEFORE adding the egg whites to it. microwave on 50% power for about 3 min!
I’d much rather go to the dentist than the doctor any day. The dentist doesn’t weigh me or take my blood. Plus, I love super clean teeth.
I’ll have to try cottage cheese again and making those waffles/pancakes. I still haven’t tried coconut flour.
Love all of this protein power. My doctor wants me to increase my intake to 80-100 grams a day. So either I’m going to be throwing meat down my gullet like an animal or start trying some new non-meat protein items.
Coconut flour is delicious and has a ton of fiber. Try it!
I have a love/hate relationship with the dentist depending on what he’s going to do to me. If it’s a cleaning, I’m excited to go. If it has something to do with a cavity (weak teeth run in my family…le sigh), I’m definitely not lookig forward to it.
As for counting/measuring food, I don’t do it. I started to do it online but it got so frustrating because the program I was using had huge measurements for everything. If I ate a salad with 10 different items, I’d spend 20 minutes just trying to figure out how much I ate and what that adds up to. Pain in the ass. So I stopped. If I hit a plateau, I’ll probably go crawling back, but for now I’m doing very well just eating small quantities often.
I hate the dentist, but I go regularly because I know how important it is. Yay for clean teefs!
I go the dentist every six months and I love the way my mouth feels after a good cleaning. However, I HATE sitting in the chair for so long without moving, and I hate the vibrating pick that scrapes up against my teeth. It’s like nails on a chalkboard. But I love feeling clean, and now I love my new electric toothbrush that I picked up at the dentist last week! :)
Hey hey now…where was my tweet?!? jk
You look pretty dang awesome in the first shot. You should use it for something – maybe a new twitter pic.?
I love the dentist too! I think it’s because I’ve never had a cavity though ;) That is a super awesome deal. I don’t have dental insurance either for many of the same reasons you listed but my cleaning + xrays appt is almost $300. Perhaps it’s b/c everything is more expensive in NY, not totally sure though. I’m bad about going every 6 months b/c of that price and usually only do it 1x/year at most.
I go to the dentist twice a year for regular stuff and however often for when I have issues. And I hate every minute of it.
On a side note, did you know that most adult cats are actually lactose intolerant? They lose their ability to process dairy as they age.
oh i had no idea! how interesting. blue was allergic from the get-go, poor kitty. he always hopped onto the counters and licked the butter dish and would sneeze, sneeze, sneeze and we’d have to toss the butter! haha.. fond memories!
I love the dentist! You’re right in that it is a worthy investment! Lately I’ve been going every 8-10 months. I don’t have dental insurance, so I have to save a little each month, but its better than just once a year, right?
I used to track nutrients hard core. Lately, I’ve been slacking but in a good way. In the past I was over-doing it and was becoming anal about it. Now I check them out for curiosity, but am more concerned about eating a balanced diet :)
I love the dentist (which you already knew!) :-) and my dental insurance is so dang affordable, it would be silly not to get it. I think I go once a year…maybe twice?
I don’t track my meals because it’s a hassle to me. I like to enjoy my food – and I just eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full. I tracked calories for a LONG time, and it made no difference in how I felt or looked – so I gave it up!
Love your blog!
Would love to know the Bountiful dentist’s info. I’m overdue for a cleaning and exam. And with no insurance, that price sounds great!
Me and my dentist go way back…I used to babysit his kids! I have mixed feelings about the dentist…I LOVE how clean my mouth feels afterwards, but I hate it when they accidentally hit a nerve with the little pick thingamagig (ouch!)
But right now I have Invisalign, so I have to go regularly, and brush and floss literally every time I eat or drink anything other than water. I can’t really snack, because it will involve taking out my aligners before I eat, then brushing my teeth afterwards. On the other hand, it makes it hard to overeat! :)
I track my meals and calories every now and then to make sure I am not going to extremes, but in general I know what’s good and what’s bad, and about how many calories are in various portions because of tracking in the past, so I try not to focus too much on it unless I notice a significant change in how my clothes fit, or how I feel in general.
Great questions!
I am now listening to Metric at work and I love it!! (thanks for the great suggestions for Indy rock girl groups!)
Nice! Love love love them!
me too! :)
You have such a pretty smile, Janetha!! :D
I’m not a dentist fan. I hate getting cavities filled. So I guess check ups are fine…but only if they don’t find any cavities!
Thanks lady!
I literally shuddered at the tweet about the polish at the end of the dentist. I HATE that part and hearing the texture of it rubbed on my teeth (weird, I know) totally makes me gag. Blegh. So, no I’m not a dentist fan :)
I’ll go with sometimes. I was using Dailyplate pretty regularly (okay, every day for over a month) and I just didn’t love how it was making me feel. I stopped and now I just keep an eye on things.
I will write down my meals, but never actually track their calories and nutrients.
I’m a HUGE dentist lover! I love how great my teeth feel after a cleaning! I like going every 6 months!
I don’t mind the dentist. I just started going to a new girl and she’s awesome, so yeah, I guess I like it. I love when my teeth feel extra clean.
I don’t count calories down to the T. As most people, there was a time when I wrote everything down and kept track of every calorie. Now, I just kind of estimate in my head throughout the day. I don’t focus on it too much but I am cognisant of it.
