hip to be a rectangle.

in dogs,meals,moves

another monday down! ten zillion more to go.

i had seven, count them, SEVEN meetings today. at least in the last one this little fellow was scurrying around on the table:

image

ohmygosh dexter! squeal.

image

he is getting so big and rolypoly. he is sort of a chunk. and did you get a load of that underbite?! for those just tuning in, dexter is my co-worker’s pup, he is half boxer/half pug/fully adorable.

after work, marshall and i rode our bikes to the gym. i did a quick biceps+triceps workout (about 40 minutes) because we had dinner plans.

image

here’s how it went down:

no warmup since i rode my bike there (1.5 miles in the hot, hot sun).

i did three sets of 12 reps of each move (12 each arm for the single arm ones) i did the first six moves consecutive with a short rest between sets and i superset the last four moves:

then i rode my bike home! my arms are all sorts of noodley.

…only to find out i rushed for nothing, because our dinner plans were nixed. it is shane’s birthday today (happy birthday shane!) he was the best man at our wedding. anyway, he was going to do a birthday dinner, but opted for a birthday movie instead.

i am lame and don’t do late movies on monday nights, so marshall went solo. however, we did have time to whip up a quick and tasty dinner to eat together before he left.

image

i went to the grocery store for, like, 2 hours yesterday. not exaggerating. i went to the new harmons in farmington and i may as well have died and went to heaven.. yes, it’s that amazing.

i will save the details of my new favorite place for another day, but i had to tell you i went there so i could explain my post title.. and these buns:

IMG_1973

it was late sunday evening and these were the only whole wheat buns left at the bakery. sure, they are “made for brats” (THANK YOU for specifying what i am supposed to use these for, harmons!) and yes, they are rectangle.. but we break the rules in my house.

how do we get around a rectangle hamburger bun?

make rectangle burgers, of course!

IMG_1949

for the burgers, i combined a pound of 93% lean, organic, grass-fed ground beef with a tablespoon of [jarred] minced garlic and about a teaspoon of trader joe’s 21 seasoning salute [best spice ever].  i separated the meat into four balls, then marshall lovingly shaped them into rectangles and threw them on the grill. he’s a keeper, folks.

IMG_1956

marshall also sliced an onion from the farmers market and threw it on the grill.

IMG_1952

since we have a never-ending supply of feta, we topped the rectangle burgers with euphrates feta.

IMG_1967

i prepped the other toppings—heirloom tomato (also from the market) and baby spinach.

IMG_1971

random photos to break up all this burger talk!

IMG_1959IMG_1966IMG_1964

okay.. back to the grill.

IMG_1962

once the burgers were done and the rectangle brat burger buns were toasted, it was time to assemble. i layered my bun with mustard + ketchup.

IMG_1979

stacked.

IMG_1986

marshall and i both “mmmm-ed” while eating these burgers. marshall even had two! penny & randy split the fourth. lucky dogs. marshall is a pushover. Winking smile

they were delicious! the grilled onions and feta really set these apart from standard burgers, and heirloom tomato trumps all other tomatoes any day of the week.

an added bonus is this dinner was made and eaten in 25 minutes—start to finish. love that.

**************************************

in other news, i do have two announcements.

number one: edible arrangements pledge of health & happiness.

when ever a special occasion is coming up, i tell marshall to get me an edible arrangement—NOT flowers. why would i want flowers? to look at them until they die? no, i want fruit, that i can look at, admire how cute it is in those flower-shaped pieces, and then eat.

so, when edible arrangements contacted me about their campaign for health & happiness, i hopped right on board.

this week (august 7-13), edible arrangements is challenging everyone to take a pledge of health and happiness to encourage healthy eating and promote happiness.

from edible arrangements:

“The idea behind the Pledge of Health and Happiness is  basically that most people believe maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an important factor is a person’s overall happiness. Since we believe our fruit bouquets bring people happiness and can be a healthful choice, we’re advocating the USDA’s new food icon, Myplate (which replaced the food pyramid) which serves as a quick and visual reminder to make a healthy meal and snacking choices. The plate demonstrates that one half of a person’s daily food intake should consist of fresh fruit and vegetables, a challenging percentage for busy Americans to stick to on a daily basis.

During our pledge week (August 7th-13th) we’re asking Americans to visit our Facebook pledge page and take the pledge to live this happy and healthy life. Each person will receive a voucher for a free Daisy pop from us (pineapple daisy shaped pop with a melon ball center ). We’d love for you to pledge on our Facebook page this week!”

my pledge of health & happiness:

this week…

• i pledge to eat a daily serving of fresh fruits and vegetables
• i pledge to make right meal and snacking choices such as incorporating daily fresh fruits and vegetables into my daily diet
• i pledge to eat at least one half plate of fresh fruit and vegetables per day for the rest of the summer

to be honest, there are some days where i don’t eat a SINGLE vegetable. i usually do eat some fruit each morning.. but veggies could use some work.  i think this pledge is going to help me be mindful of my vegetable intake and make sure i am consistent.

hop on over to the edible arrangements facebook page to make the pledge yourself and receive a free daisy pop!

number two: the warrior crunch granola giveaway winner.

2. on average, how many servings of fruits+veggies do you eat daily?

Lisa August 8, 2011 at 11:39 pm

Ahh, I want a Dexter!

Christin August 9, 2011 at 12:33 pm

me too!!

Missy August 8, 2011 at 11:49 pm

Do they not make buns for the good kids? The Brats should not get a bun! (tee hee!)
OK, I am a ham – but my ultimate burger would be steaming hot sesame seed bun with fresh homegrown tomatoes, mayo, mustard, ketchup, red onion, and mushrooms and a grilled turkey burger.

Fruit? I am constantly eating it. I ate 3 peaches 30 minutes ago!
I prob need more veggies but I love my fruit, especially in season!

Carrie@shrinkingcarrie August 8, 2011 at 11:52 pm

Ha! I have obviously had a long day and thought that the buns were referring to brats, as in “you’re being a brat”. Took me a sec to figure it was bratwurst. Blonde moment.
I like pastrami on my burger. I miss Crown Burger and could pretty much eat any burger they make.
I get plenty of fruit, and I always make a vegetable for dinner. I could probably use more veggies though.
And that dog is ridiculously adorable!

Amanda August 8, 2011 at 11:55 pm

I have been working on Andy to agree to get a dog. I just flashed him a picture of Dexter. TOO CUTE!!!

You make me want a grill. So so bad.

Cheri Z August 9, 2011 at 12:02 am

After a trip to California (with a stop at Bob’s Big Boy restaurant), my parents were hooked on “California burgers” – mayo, catsup, mustard, tomato, onion, pickles, and lettuce. It’s still my favorite to this day, probably because it reminds me of those backyard barbecues as a kid. My own daughter is a huge fan of Worchestershire burgers topped with lots of bleu cheese.

We push to get in five servings of fruit and veg a day, but it can be a challenge. Smoothies (regular and frozen into popsicles) and salads help – that’s for sure. I also try to hide veggies in other foods. It’s a mom thing. =D

Love your pups!

Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn August 9, 2011 at 12:05 am

That dog is the cutest thing ever. Also, your grill is kickass. FYI.

Amber Faye @ One "Faye" At A Time August 9, 2011 at 1:00 am

AAAAAHAHAHA That dog is so ugly it’s almost cute! I love the underbite.. Hilarious!

Love the rectangle burgers. Fabulous idea. The Harmon’s down here in Draper is pretty much the bomb.com! It’s really close to my work so I pretty much go there for lunch everytime I forget to pack my own.

Amber Faye @ One "Faye" At A Time August 9, 2011 at 1:00 am

PS- Apparently “pretty much” is pretty much my favorite thing to say. WTF

Elaine August 9, 2011 at 2:10 am

Ohmygoodness, a boxer and pug mixed into one adorable pup? I’m in heaven! Those are 2 of my favorite breeds.
I’m going to have to stop by TJ’s and check out that 21 seasoning salute. Where do you do most of your grocery shopping and find “clean” items?
1. My ultimate burger is at McMenamins. It’s the Wilbur Burger which has: beef, secret sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickle, red onion, Tillamook cheddar, topped with a fried egg on a spent grain bun. It would be even more perfect if there was avocado somewhere in it or on it.
2. I eat a lot more fruit than veggies. I love veggies, so I don’t know what the issue is. Also since it’s summer, it’s definitely easier to eat fruits and veggies.

Elaine August 9, 2011 at 2:14 am

Oh and I dip said burger in ketchup and/or peppercorn ranch. Yeah, I go all out when I eat this meal :) It’s a treat!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga August 9, 2011 at 2:51 am

my ultimate burger is never having one :)

No red meat for me since I was 7 yrs old, can’t imagine trying now. And veggie burgers..well, let’s just say I’d rather spend my time making desserts than burgers :)

And I eat a boatload of fruits/vegs…probably 10-12 servings a day, easy. I dont count though!

cathy August 9, 2011 at 6:02 am

that is WAY too many meetings for one day, esp a monday!
“i am lame and don’t do late movies on monday nights,” – > i don’t do late movies on any night! late is defined as anything after 7:30 p.m. i went once as a “new experience” type-thing and that was enough!
no prob getting my veggies – one salad beast pretty much takes care of the daily requirement!

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey August 9, 2011 at 6:22 am

I freaking love that dog. For real – so stinkin’ cute!

CJ @ http://healthy-happy-whole.com/ August 9, 2011 at 6:32 am

Ohhh my favorite burger is a tough one! I like a beef burger with lettuce tomato pickles ketchup and mustard…pretty standard! But I like different cheeses, most often Swiss ( but I will definitely b trying feta!) and a crusty oaty bun, toasted! I had a burger last night for dinner but this is making me want another!
I ordered the warrior crunch too! I haven’t tried it before but I can’t wait!

Lauren August 9, 2011 at 7:00 am

OMG that dog is the cutest thing! Wow, powering through 7 meetings on a Monday. Thats rough. Glad you made it through. ;)

Jena August 9, 2011 at 7:11 am

OMG, that puppy is the cutest thing EVAH! That is quite the combination of dog, boxer & pug. Huh. Interesting, but so sweet!! I love how he’s just chilling on the table during your meeting!!

I just like normal handburgers. ketchup, mustard, pickles on a whole wheat bun.

I don’t nearly as much fruit veggies as I should. Maybe 3-5 total. shame =/

Donna @ Life of a Happy Blonde August 9, 2011 at 7:18 am

Hahahaa love the bun description and any post with adorable doggie photos :)
Feta on burgers = love, i’ve been on a total feta kick lately – yesterday i had it with beets and apples, mmmm
Oh and 7 meetings is cruel!

Hope August 9, 2011 at 7:29 am

Those burgers look delicious! :) I love a good burger on the grill. Yum!

I love the doggie pictures. They are all so cute! :)

Corey @ Learning Patience August 9, 2011 at 7:34 am

Love the rectangular burger idea…too funny…

My favorite burger is these turkey burgers they sell at Costco (of course I don’t get them in Trinidad – boo) – it’s super healthy – all white meat with extra sharp cheddar cheese, Tabasco, Dijon mustard, guacamole, tomato and lettuce!

Now I’m hungry… xoxo from Trinidad

katie August 9, 2011 at 7:38 am

No burgers for me! I make Mike and Anthony burgers, in fact, that is what Im making them for dinner tonight! I need rectangle buns to make it more fun though!

Love ya girl!

Dexter is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!!!!

Lee August 9, 2011 at 8:04 am

My ultimate burger is a veggie patty with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, goat cheese and avocado. Yum.

Heather (Heather's Dish) August 9, 2011 at 8:15 am

i’m the same way with edible arrangements! although i do love pretty flowers too, but their fruit is always SO good and so cute!

PBJenny August 9, 2011 at 9:06 am

I used to work in a restaurant and tried SO hard to get the owner to add an “elvis burger” to the menu. Burger with PB, bacon, and banana slices. I’ve never tried it but really? how could that not be good? and if I saw that on a menu I would totally get it.. just so I could say that I did! Whatevz… I’ll save it for my PB&J sandwich shop ;)

I eat enough fruit and veggies to keep me regular :)

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 9, 2011 at 11:18 am

I’d eat that burger!! Travis makes one that is a burger with PB and a fried egg! Don’t know what it’s called and I turned my nose up at it at first, but it. is. so. good!

Katie August 9, 2011 at 9:31 am

” all sorts of noodley” – I love that. I just finished some heavy squats, and my legs are all sorts of noodley right now, too.

And rectangle burgers, what a great idea! xox

Maren August 9, 2011 at 9:42 am

what a cool pledge! I am going to really try hard to eat more fruit this week….even though I have none in my fridge. I’m horrible, I know! I’m more of a veggie lover than a fruit lover! I’m too lazy to cut it up. Pathetic, I know. It usually sits there until Nate finally cuts it up for me :)

Oh, and I don’t ever eat burgers, really. I guess the occasional turkey burger, but I haven’t had an actual burger in years!

Green Dog Wine August 9, 2011 at 9:42 am

While Randy and Penny are still totally the cutest – OMG Dexter melts my heart – that underbite is the greatest thing i’ve ever seen – and boxer and pugs are two of the best pugs around!

Katy Widrick August 9, 2011 at 9:44 am

My Junior is part boxer and he has the most wicked underbite…it’s one of the many, many reasons I love him.

Danielle C. August 9, 2011 at 10:05 am

YUM! I have been craving burgers, I need to make them soon.

Love the owl statue, so cute.

Penny and Randy are lucky to have a dad that feeds them the last burger. ;)

The Teenage Taste August 9, 2011 at 10:27 am

Your dinner looks FABULOUS! Your rectangular burgers made me smile. :-D

Jessica August 9, 2011 at 10:53 am

OMG! I want Dexter!! Where does he live…I’m gonna kidnap him!!

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 9, 2011 at 11:21 am

your arm workout looks awesome…might have to try that one today! Nothing touches my triceps but Skull Crushers!!

Claire @ Live and Love to Eat August 9, 2011 at 11:29 am

My favorite burger would be veggie with carmelized onions, swiss, and barbeque sauce. :) I probably get 5 a day!

Betty August 9, 2011 at 11:30 am

i loooove a turkey burger with ranch seasoning mixed in. have to include a large heap of red onions (raw, never cooked) and ton of iceberg lettuce (never tried spinach, which i usually only eat in my salad). for some reason iceberg makes it. sometimes i would rather just wrap my burger up in my lettuce to cut out some carbs, since barbara loves potato rolls ( i do too, but my thighs don’t). a little mayo and ketchup on top!

i usually always get atleast half a plate of veggies at dinner. i need to get better with that too.

Kerryne August 9, 2011 at 11:45 am

My ultimate burger would go something like this… A whole grain bun, sauteed onions and mushrooms atop a nice slab of beef with melted swiss cheese, mayo and ketchup would have to be in there somewhere (nothing like a little fry sauce) and lettuce. Nom, nom, nom.

I eat veggies in almost every meal every day. I need to get better at the fruit thing but with all the comp training I have done fruit wasn’t allowed so its something that I just don’t get enough of.

Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) August 9, 2011 at 11:57 am

Ohhhhhhh, I love the links you provided for the workout moves ! :)

Janetha August 9, 2011 at 11:59 am

I know! I just found that website and was STOKED.. there is a plethora of moves!

lynn @ the actor's diet August 9, 2011 at 12:04 pm

my ideal burger is umami’s turkey burger, with t’giving fixins – cranberry sauce, stuffing!!!

Paige @ Running Around Normal August 9, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Aww – your little fam is so cute! I want Penny!! :)
I like a spicy black bean burger w/ ketchup, mustard, and avocado!

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats August 9, 2011 at 12:35 pm

That little dog is so cute! :) My ideal burger would would be topped with grilled onions, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. I would say I get at least 3 servings of fruit per day and maybe 2-3 servings of veggies? It really just depends on the day!

Christin August 9, 2011 at 12:40 pm

I am trying to get better about my veggie intake…my latest trick has been adding sweet potatoes and/or spinach, broccoli, carrots, etc to my fruit smoothies…it certainly helps up my number of veggies, but sometimes the smoothies taste a little off ;). The trouble I come across is in the preparation and the calories it entails to make veggies taste good…with salads there’s dressing…with steamed veggies there butter or sauce of some kind…sigh

My ultimate burger:
lean organic beef with blue cheese and crispy applewood smoked bacon, tomatoes, baby spinach, aoli mustard on a whole wheat bun…mmmhmhhhmhmhmhmhm

the delicate place August 9, 2011 at 12:48 pm

i love that dog, his name and dexter morgan. we had grilled tri tip from trader joes, and grilled asaparagus. my pee still smelled this morning. tmi? my perfect burger is either a rare kobe beef or a bison burger also rare. no bun, spicy brown mustard, grilled shrooms & onions, lettuce, tomato, sometimes bacon with a slice of avocado.
i eat 0 or 1 serving of fruit daily and 7 servings of veggies!

dana @ my little celebration August 9, 2011 at 1:31 pm

That, dog, is THEE cutest. Squeal.

I try and get at lest 4-5 servings of fruit and veg in a day. Sometimes I fail, but I always try my bestest.

Erica August 9, 2011 at 1:35 pm

Dexter seriously melts my little heart. SO cute. I can’t get enough. Whoop to that dinner! Looks amazing. I have been eating SO much feta now that I can :).
1. describe your ultimate burger—from the type of bun to the kind of burger to the toppings—don’t forget the condiments! Black bean chunky burger with corn in the mix. Served on a baguette type role with pineapple and bbq sauce or salsa

2. on average, how many servings of fruits+veggies do you eat daily? A gagillion……

Allison August 9, 2011 at 2:55 pm

My favorite burgers are turkey burgers! I always add so much to the actual meat, that they ultimately remind me of meatloaf! IDK why I feel the need to add in sauteed onions, peppers, mushrooms…

On a daily basis, I eat enough veggies and fruit for a small family, thus why I make a weekly Costco run and stock up!

Emilie August 9, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Everyone should be allowed to bring their dogs to work! How cute and fun! On a side note, that grill work has made me so hungry! Gorgeous photos.

Errign August 9, 2011 at 4:27 pm

1. My ultimate burger? Oh gosh, there are so many delicious combos coming to mind – I’ll list a few
-black pepper crusted burger with brie, tomato, lettuce & onion on a pretzel roll!
-goat cheese & tomato & basil on a toasted english muffin
-sharp cheddar & spicy brown mustard – no roll!

2. I think I probably eat around 4-5 servings of fruit & veg a day.

Megan (Braise The Roof) August 9, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Dexter is so hilariously cute- and I’m not even really a dog person! :) Love the rectangular hamburgers. You’re nothing if not resourceful.

Brittany August 9, 2011 at 5:07 pm

Your burgers looked good. I will have to try spinach on mine for some reason I have never thought of that before!

I am not a huge beef burger fan but I love chicken and turkey burgers. My favorite has to be the “Heritage Turkey Burger” from Flip Burger Boutique. It has the turkey burger of course, monterrey cheese, avocado slices, alfalfa sprouts and pomegranate ketchup. It is on my list of foods to recreate at home.

LauraJayne August 9, 2011 at 5:18 pm

I don’t do late night movies ever… because I’m always exhausted, and the late time combined with darkness puts me to sleep. Always. Since I sometimes snore and find the lack of reclining theater seats to be an inconvenience, I just don’t go to movies very much. Lame. I know.

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather August 9, 2011 at 5:42 pm

I’ve totally used hoagies for burger before- my asian burger subs… http://www.healthywithheather.com/2011/04/asian-style-hamburger-subs/. Turns out they are one of my favorites! It just needs avocado on top… Because what’s a burger without avocado?

Annette@EnjoyYourHealthyLife August 9, 2011 at 6:09 pm

ahhhhh love it! We’ve used similar buns/hoagies for burgers too! woot.

Nice workout, ps!

Amy August 9, 2011 at 6:18 pm

ahh i miss having a grill so bad. i love grilled burgers, veggies, fruit, anything really. looks like an awesome dinner!

Naomi(onefitfoodie) August 9, 2011 at 7:08 pm

holy moly those burgers look good and I love that they are rectangular!! makes them so much more fun to eat and make, right?!

OH MY GOSH that pup!!! that is the cutest thing i have seeeeennnn! (besides randy and penny of course!)
