plan of attack.

by Janetha on July 31, 2011

in meals,moves

yo! i promise that things are almost back to normal here in meals & moves land. with the auction invoices almost all tied out, i should have plenty of time this week to type lots of normal posts!

can you believe it’s august already?! i am pretty sure july didn’t even happen. i was busy almost each and every day in july.

because i have been so busy, my organization and tidiness has suffered.  meals have been thrown together with whatever was on hand. i was going to the grocery store more times in a week than i was going to the gym. workouts were not planned nor regular. every single room in my house is cluttered. my bathrooms are both in need of a serious scrub down. my car is disgusting both inside and out since i haven’t had a chance to clean it since the tahoe road trip. my office looks like it was a victim of a paper explosion. and let’s not even talk about the laundry situation. the whole month of july has been on a wash-it-the-night-before-so-you-have-something-to-wear schedule.

typing that paragraph above just gave me major anxiety. i kind of feel like my life is a complete mess. oh, right, that’s because it is!

because i can’t magically snap my fingers and have everything neatly organized, clean and in order (wouldn’t it be nice)—i have to do something that makes me feel at least a LITTLE bit in control. otherwise, i may go crazy. for real.

the solution? make a list! lists make me sane. they give me a sense of security. i sat down and made a very detailed list for the week. so, even though my house is still in shambles and there is still a thick layer of bugs splattered on my windshield, i at least have a plan to save my sanity.

here’s hoping that by this time next week, i feel a tad more stable.

because i know a lot of you share my same passion for lists and planning, i decided to document my plan of attack for all to see. that way, i may actually stick to it. right?

2. on average..how many times do you go to the grocery store each week?

xo. janetha g.

Jenn L @ Peas and Crayons July 31, 2011 at 11:47 pm

I love that you plan yours! I fly by the seat of my pants but just reading your meal plans for the week has me super inspired to get into a routine before my move! thanks J!

The Healthy Hipster July 31, 2011 at 11:55 pm

I love making a meal plan and sticking to it but I need to keep my moves flexible! Some days I end up super active at work (teacher cardio I like to call it) and on those days I usually prioritize other activities when I get home over workin out. Looks like a dreamy plan tho!

Ariffa July 31, 2011 at 11:56 pm

AaAhhh doesn’t it feel SO good to plan everything out like that when life is in shambles!??

Candice July 31, 2011 at 11:56 pm

I feel the same way!! this past month has been INSANE! I don’t even want to try and move my mt everest out of my laundry room.. it will take like 5 trips. I hate Laundry!!
Here we go to recommitting to a good week!
PS. Add Body PUMP to your saturday moves.. mmk?

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:52 pm

I need to! I tried to wake up last Saturday but it didn’t happen. I will try again :)

Melissa @ Journey to Marvelous August 1, 2011 at 12:15 am

That’s a great list! I need to be better about planning out my whole week ahead of time and sticking to the plan…I’d probably get a lot more done! Thanks for sharing your plan of attack!

Carbzilla August 1, 2011 at 12:16 am

I have to say it’s been such a relief not having to blog while I get up to speed at my new job, but at the same time I miss you guys and have started feeling like I’m on the outside looking in. I think I’ll be able to add it back once I get the job down. I’ve been keeping lists of my work outfits and tracking meals on WW, but otherwise just trying to keep it together and not showing up at work wearing two different shoes.

Lots of love!
T

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:52 pm

I miss you but taking time off from blogging is so necessary in your sitch! I am so happy for you!

Heather August 1, 2011 at 1:24 am

Very organized…..I usually don’t plan my meals to a T….I am either inspired…or eat the same thing 3 days in a row.

Eden August 1, 2011 at 2:11 am

Oh my gosh! You need a break!

dude if you need an impromtu guest post because you need to recoup, I’m here. But I warn you, your readiship will nose dive….

I go to the store way too often! To my defense, I don’t buy a lot at once. Plus, this hot guy works at Trader Joes so I need to get my dose of eye candy ;)

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:53 pm

That is reason enough for me.

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga August 1, 2011 at 3:48 am

on average..how many times do you go to the grocery store each week? =
at least twice, sometimes 3x, but I never spend more than $25-35 each trip. I reload fresh produce and things as needed and am REALLY careful about not doing impulse buys even tho I am in the store multiple times per week. I just dont enjoy buying produce for the week. It takes up too much space and gets funky. I’d rather shop 2x or 3x than 1x a week.

And I posted about owls just now and linked you b/c I know you are the owl queen :)

xo

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:53 pm

I wish I had more self control. I have tried that with the produce before and never get out of there for less than $50!

MelissaNibbles August 1, 2011 at 5:06 am

I think I go to the grocery store every other day. I hate carrying a lot of bags from my car to my apartment and going to the store gives me a reason to leave work (there’s a grocery store down the road from my job and I can walk there).

cathy August 1, 2011 at 6:15 am

wow – i bet you feel way better just having the lists done. i totally agree – list making is THE BEST. enjoy CHECKING ITEMS OFF, now, this week!
i go to the grocery store every single day because it is right across the street. sometimes, i end up going twice in one day. it’s also a lot easier to carry one knapsack full at a time instead of oodles of bags.
have a super monday! we have a holiday in ontario (although i’m working for a couple hours!).

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:53 pm

Enjoy your holiday! Don’t work too long.

Lauren August 1, 2011 at 6:52 am

I do the exact same thing when I feel like life is getting a bit out of control. I write everything down! It makes me feel so much more in control, even if I don’t stick to the list 100%, just having it laid out makes it seem so much more attainable.

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:54 pm

I think planning is half the battle.. and then if I get at least some of it done, it’s a success.. ha!

lindsay August 1, 2011 at 7:06 am

man, your list looks like mine. I feel like I just blinked and july was gone. What the? haha, but great plan of attack and keep those faux frosties coming. I live off them in the summer!

Holly @ The Runny Egg August 1, 2011 at 7:50 am

Janetha I love that you are a list maker — me too! That is how I find my sanity when I am super busy. Just having a plan and having those things taken care of seems to take a load off of my mind.

I usually plan my meals on Sundays as well — breakfasts, lunches and snacks are usually the same each day (I know, boring!) but I do plan out the dinners. And I try to get my shopping done all in one day, but I usually head back to the store on Wed or Thurs to pick up more produce.

Heather (Heather's Dish) August 1, 2011 at 7:52 am

girl, i’m with you…there’s no way july ever even happened. as far as i’m concerned we skipped straight from may to august!

Hope August 1, 2011 at 8:11 am

I try to plan out my meals as much as possible especially dinners. I typically only go to the supermarket once a week unless I forget something. I do all of my food shopping and menu planning on Sundays. :)

Steph (@ mediterraneanmiss) August 1, 2011 at 8:15 am

I am totally obsessed with lists. I make them ~everywhere~ and find they really help settle my nerves, even when I don’t follow them to a ‘T’. There’s something about organizing your thoughts on paper that lets you see the mountain of to-do’s in a different, conquerable way.

I go to the market probably 2-3 times a week and I sort of plan my meals when I figure out what to buy. I don’t have specific things for specific days, though, sometimes inspiration hits last minute, or I’m just not in the mood for something I’d planned on.

Good luck!!! xx

meghan n August 1, 2011 at 8:24 am

Happy August! Where are all of those LARABARS in your meal plan?!?! :)

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Oh yeah, right? I forgot about them hahaha.. Although I did eat a few over the weekend!

Annette@EnjoyYourHealthyLife August 1, 2011 at 8:47 am

You did so much for the fundraiser, so it’s totally okay to be in disarray for awhile!!

I love doing laundry, it’s kinda therapeutic. Hah. And yes, I plan out my exercise for the week….because it’s my job! (I teach fitness classes), so i can’t really back out. ANd I want to get paid. Win-win!!

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Hold the phone, you LOVE it? Come over to my house!!

marci August 1, 2011 at 9:47 am

this all looks so good! what bread do you eat? and the crackers do you like with your cottage cheeae? i still have not tryed the green monsters want to but i am in fear of not liking them or them not making me full

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:57 pm

I switch it up! Right now I am eating SmartBagels for my sandwiches, but I also often eat Sunflower Market’s Oat Bran bread or Ezekiel bread.. I also really love Dave’s Killer bread.

Akmaks and Fiber Wasa crackers are my two go-tos!

I always add at least a cup of fruit and a serving of protein powder to my shakes, along with flax or chia seeds for more calories/fat.. they keep me full all morning! Hope you try them.. they are tasty :)

Alta August 1, 2011 at 9:58 am

I maintain my sanity through lists as well! I plan my meals and since I started the Supreme 90 Day, I’m enjoying having my moves planned out too!

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 1:57 pm

What’s the Supreme 90 day?

Alta August 1, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Supreme 90 Day is a muscle confusion type workout. Kinda like P 90 x. There are 10 DVDs. They’re not as fancy or as polished (from a production standpoint) as P 90 x, but they cost $20. I’m almost halfway though, and am seeing results in increased muscle tone and some weight loss. Enjoying it! You should check it out if you are up to another DVD training program sometime.

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Cool, thanks for the information! I am all about muscle tone right now.

Alta August 1, 2011 at 2:15 pm

You can get it at Target, and I think CVS or Walgreens. It’s also available online. I promise I’m not a spokesperson for it or anything! :)

The Teenage Taste August 1, 2011 at 10:16 am

Sounds like a great “plan of attack.” I don’t plan stuff out that much but I do make a basic list in my head. Exercise I just do whatever I feel like doing that day.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) August 1, 2011 at 10:47 am

Janetha- Honestly sweet cheeks, the reason your life is a shambles is because you are a selfless human being. If it wasn’t for all your hard work this month to help a friend, you wouldn’t have had to go to work on Sunday and you wouldn’t have papers on your washing machine- this just shows me what an amazing human being you are.

And yes, lists give a sense of control and I have them on my tasks on Gmail.

I do not ever follow a plan for meals nor moves- I like to fly by the seat of my pants I suppose. (Can I just say that I would collapse if I ate as little as you plan to eat? I eat probably 2-3 times what you have listed there, no wonder I’ll never be thin). Perhaps one day I’ll try to do a ‘plan’ for the week just to see how I like it. I usually plan the day before or that day. It’s not like I’ll choose a hamburger over a salad due to lack of planning.

I’m at the store about 2-3 times a week I’d say. Whenever I run out of the essentials: Low carb yogurt, greek yog, veg, eggs, milk. I try to run out of everything at the same time.

Love you- you’ll be back on your game in no time flat.

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:02 pm

1. YOU ARE THIN
2. I think maybe my meal plans look like less than they are. I am usually right around 1700 cals.
3. You are an equally as amazing human being and your hard work and help is mucho appreciated!
4. There is a 27% chance I will follow this plan. I just like to know what my options are and have all the ingredients on hand.. I am like you, and plan the day before or that day depending on my mood.
5. LOVE YOU!
6. YOU ARE THIN

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) August 1, 2011 at 2:05 pm

You are my new favorite human being, period.

<l:-D

Emilie August 1, 2011 at 10:54 am

Protein pancakes are the way to go! They are such a great way to start your day.

Kati Mora, MS, RD, Kellogg's FiberPlus(R) Wellness Advocate August 1, 2011 at 11:02 am

I like to plan my meals and moves out each day, but always leave a little room for some fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants decisions! For example, my breakfast typically includes a bowl of Kellogg’s FiberPlus(R) cereal and a cup of coffee as a base, but I’ll mix up the additional items I eat for breakfast to keep it fresh and fun.

momma b. August 1, 2011 at 11:11 am

haha I just made a week long written list myself yesterday I know you got a lot of great things from me genetically and that’s makes me very proud, however you also got a few less than desirable traits too….I won’t list them because you already did!

We’re in this together and there’s always tomorrow, uh oh now I am singing!

Love you xoxo!!

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 1, 2011 at 11:19 am

Well, you KNOW how I feel about LISTS – it’s right in the name :) Making lists = controlling anxiety. I make at least 3 a day. In pen, and then mark through things. Love that feeling!
And I go to the grocery store at least two times a week, usually 3. I’m always forgetting something. Ha, guess the lists aren’t helping.

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Yeah I ALWAYS forget something, even with a list!

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) August 1, 2011 at 2:07 pm

I love crossing things off lists too- I feel gypped if I do something before I write it in my list. I’ve been known to do something, then write it in the list- just so that I can check the box or cross it off- I’m CRAZY!! :-) hahah and a fabulous underachiever!

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:11 pm

I do the same. Why waste the satisfaction?!

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 1, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Not crazy…or at least if you are, I am too!

McIntosh August 1, 2011 at 8:50 pm

Me crazy too then! I do things just so I can cross it off my list. good excuse to skip the undesirable parts.

Though Janetha I think your list would give me anxiety because I would want to do it all at once so as not to have it hanging over my head!

Oh and I am so impressed that you can stick to a meal plan….my hero!

Lauren August 1, 2011 at 11:21 am

My life is a mess too! Moving day is in one week and I haven’t even started helping with the packing (Sorry mom+dad!) Ugh, better go pack!

Bella August 1, 2011 at 11:32 am

We are in the absolute same boat honey.
I have been so scattered this week.
Normally with my meals they are planned and I am a avid calorie counter. I know I shouldn’t but I do. I am trying to start eating what I crave on a whim with out horrible choices and I am also attempting to not obsess over every litter grain of sugar. So usually, yeah I do plan EVERY meal and EVERY move. But today I haven’t.
And for groceries, I plan three large dinners a week so I have left-overs for lunch. I also have a large list of pantry staples that I MUST always have. So my grocery list contains the ingredients for the three meals and two baked goods I want to eat, and any staples I ran out of in the week. If there is a good deal I might splurge also. So about 100$ a week. Meaning I go every week once a week.

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:03 pm

There is nothing wrong with calorie counting. I personally can’t do it because I am lazy, but if it is what keeps you in line.. don’t say you shouldn’t! More power to you!

Jenna Z August 1, 2011 at 11:34 am

Oh, I LOVE a good list. It just makes you feel SO MUCH better to have everything down on paper, ready to be checked off, doesn’t it? Your BFL plan looks awesome. You’ll have no trouble sticking to that tasty bunch of meals! And you’ve reminded me to add more protein ice cream to my own plan, hello! It’s summer!

Stephanie @ extremebalance.net/blog August 1, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Maybe this is the week that you get a cleaning lady in for 2 hours, and spend those 2 hours on you, instead? I’m a HUGE fan (newly converted) of MORE kindness to self, LESS *have to*.

And I would LOVE to grocery shop daily… but I spend more that way, so I’m trying to curb my enthusiasm. BUT: in Sao Paulo, the water I drink must be from bottles, so I actually *do* stop at the grocery store every day to top myself up… luckily, since my gym is right on top of the grocery store, I usually hit gym + grocery at the same time. Magic!

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Cleaning lady?! That would be amazing. I wish I had the money for that!

I always hit the grocery store post-gym. I may look like a hot mess, but it’s easier.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) August 1, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Doesn’t Marshall LOVE to clean? Isn’t it his form of therapy or am I thinking of another awesome couple?

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:12 pm

I don’t think he loves it.. he just loves me! haha

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) August 1, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Well, naturally! :-)

the delicate place August 1, 2011 at 12:13 pm

woosh your list is giving ME anxiety! i plan most of my meals for the week but towards the end i get a little willy nilly ;p. i do a lot of prep on sunday so that i can just come home during the week and mix and match what i’ve cooked. same goes for lunches i hate thinking about it after a day of work! i go to the grocery store 1x for a big order and try to stay away but sometimes i end up there twice. 2 times in 7 days isn’t too bad :)

Carrie@shrinkingcarriewww August 1, 2011 at 12:23 pm

I LOVE to make lists. Not that I always get them all done, but I like to have some sort of schedule or else I just feel lazy.
I make goals every Sunday for the following week and then try to stick to it daily. It helps because then I don’t have a big ass list of crap to get done and feel totally overwhelmed!

Mama Pea August 1, 2011 at 12:53 pm

Friday’s dinner looks awesome.

;)

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:09 pm

So does tonight’s.. with some sPEAcialty tortillas :)

Christin August 1, 2011 at 1:29 pm

I pretty much always plan my moves for the week, but am open on the weekend…with meals I try to plan in advance a little bit, but my mood often dictates my meals on a given day so I adjust accordingly
I go to the grocery store mostly 1 time per week, but usually I forget something or some things and need to make a second trip
:)

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 2:10 pm

I am the same way and almost ALWAYS change my meal plan according to my mood. Especially my snack depending if I want sweet/savory!

Susan August 1, 2011 at 2:35 pm

I love a good list too! Type A’s unite! I have learned though that the healthiest thing for me is to just set a minimum number of goals for a certain time period. If I wanted to, I could make a to-do list that is a mile long, but that would serve no purpose but to stress me out!

I usually go to the g-store (can we call it that?) twice a week, but lately I’ve been going every day for just 1 or two things because I’m trying to only buy what I absolutely NEED before I move out!

Yolie @ Practising Wellness August 1, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Mmm…your meal plan looks awesome! I love simply bars. Food wise, and workout wise, I never really plan ahead, and just fly by the seat of my pants…it works well for me, but I love your plan of attack. Good luck with the week ahead! I love making lists, they help heaps with feeling better about busy schedules. <3 xyx

Nicole, RD August 1, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Your auction was amazing…YOU are incredible!

Have a great week getting back to “normal” :)

Grocery store ONCE…can’t handle it more than that!

SweatyGirl August 1, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Whew! I feel more organized just from reading your lists! Haha thanks ;-)
I spent the weekend running errands and doing housework… there is plenty more to do, but I love that feeling of getting it under control!

Erica August 1, 2011 at 4:03 pm

I totally used to be a planner – every single bite. I got a little obsessive so I’m actually trying to gear away from that a little and have really been trying to listen to my body and what it wants when. I love reading yours though!

I’ve been reading your blog for awhile but don’t think I’ve ever commented. I tried something new the other day that I’m in love with and thought of you. Plain Chiobani + 1/2 a crystal light packet. I love eating the fruit Chiobani’s but love that the plain ones have so much more protein. Hungry sent an email out with the idea and I tried it out and loved it – peach mango is my favorite so far! Just thought I’d share :)

Janetha August 1, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Oh I definitely agree that planning every bite wouldn’t be the best! I make these plans but rarely stick to them.. I just like to know what I can have and make sure to have all this stuff on hand.

That is a great idea with the Crystal Light! Thanks for that!

Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats August 1, 2011 at 5:33 pm

You are incredible for all of your hard work with the auction! Making lists helps me get my life in check too. lol. I try to go to the store once or twice per week. It might change now that I am living alone and school will be starting soon though! I need to start figuring that out! lol :)

Amy August 1, 2011 at 5:46 pm

looks like some great eats for the week. ive tried to plan out my meals but usually flake out by the end of the week. i hit up the store at least once a week..usually a couple times though bc im always missing something!

Naomi(onefitfoodie) August 1, 2011 at 6:07 pm

recently I have been planning both my meals and moves beacuse I am approaching another show!! BUT the past few months I have been sorta winging it which feels SO nice and such the right thing to do in my life after it went through a bit of a whirlwind…So much happier and sane

Oh and Im taking bikram tomorrow cannot wait!!

Stephanie @ Stephanie Proof August 1, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Hey Janetha,

I have recently come across your blog and I just wanted to let you know that I love what you are doing! You have a great site that’s full of inspiration, Keep at it and I look forward to reading more :)

I always plan in meals in advance, every night I always prep my meals for the next day so there are no excuses! Usually on Sundays I will take note of what needs to be purchased for the week and I’ll head out to the grocery store. I usually go to the grocery store once a week but I will get to the farmers market once or twice a week also.

Steph xo

PBJenny August 1, 2011 at 7:59 pm

I am obsessed with knowing what I’m doing, when I’m doing and (usually) what I’m going to eat while doing it. In other words, I’m an avid planner and you know what? I never go hungry. I think there’s a method to our madness ;)

Felicia (Natural + Balanced) August 1, 2011 at 8:00 pm

teras whey chocolate protein… tastes EXACTLY like the wendys frosty. for real. make it all the time!!

Katy @ notjustacarnivore August 1, 2011 at 8:11 pm

I’m so envious of your ability to do this. I plan my workouts, but my food is totally on-the-fly, which is probably why I end up at the grocery store at least 5 times per week. I should work on that.

julie August 1, 2011 at 9:14 pm

bahh you’re good to go girl! if it makes you feel better i have the time and my life is messy yet i’m chillin here watching the bachelorette finale and not cleaning my room. priorities, no?

Nat August 1, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Most of the time I plan but sometimes I get sidetracked like watching the bachelorette (on right now!) instead of organizing my lunch for work tomorrow.

BroccoliHut August 1, 2011 at 10:05 pm

I plan out almost all my meals for the week, minus the weekend eats. I also grocery shop just once per week, but I’m starting to think that’s weird for a foodie like me!
