somebody turned six today.
any guesses who it might be?
he’s got short legs, long ears, droopy eyes and a heart of gold.
the one and only randy dog is six years old!
doesn’t he age well?
birthdays are a big deal around here. i made randy a cake to celebrate.
dog-friendly peanut butter banana birthday cake.
ingredients:
- 1 overripe banana, mashed
- 1 heaping spoonful of natural peanut butter
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- splash of water
- peanut butter for frosting
directions:
combine ingredients in a small bowl, in order, mixing well after adding each ingredient.
pour into a 5 x 7 baking dish that has been sprayed with oil.
bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
remove from oven and let cool.
frost with peanut butter. let the birthday boy lick the spatula.
top with a candle.
when the cake was ready, we lit the candle and sang “happy birthday” to mister magoo (we have a lot of nicknames for him.)
the pups were both licking their chops in anticipation of eating birthday cake.
and.. believe it or not.. randy actually blew out the candle all by himself! i hope he made a wish.
i cut the cake and served it to the two canines at the party. i hate the word “moist”, but there really is nothing else to describe the cake!
let them eat cake!
favorite photo in 3, 2, 1..
ha!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RANDY DOG! love you lots.
in other news, last night marked mine & marshall’s four-years-as-boyfriend-and-girlfriend anniversary. i guess now that we are married, we shouldn’t celebrate that anymore…
see you tomorrow for the chobani winners, recent eats and some random weekend photos that i have failed so miserably at posting.
Qs~

Oh my God, you just rekindled my love for basset hounds. He is absolutely ADORABLE!!!!
The last birthday was my mom’s, but that was months ago. My little girl will be 2 in 2 weeks…and there’ll DEFINITELY be some cake!
I loved this post so much…you dont even know! Randy is soo cute. Happy birthday buddy <– said in a voice that I only use when talking to dogs :)
I SO know the voice :)
Hahahah I just love Randy’s facial expressions–he’s so Eyore from Winnie the Poo and why does your other dog (darnnit, I forgot her name!) look all scared? hahah too cute! Happy Birthday Randy! May you have many, many more to come!
It’s Penny! Haha–she does look scared, huh? She was actually watching Randy to make sure he didn’t come eat her cake! She’s a little baby.
Happy birthday, sweet face Randy dog! :D
Oooooh these pictures put the biggest smile on my face! And I still think you can celebrate girlfriend/boyfriend anniversaries! It’s always gonna be a special day :D
Awe loveeee! Now I can make this for my pups as a late birthday cake!
The only substitute for moist that I can think of is ooey gooey and that isn’t much better! lol. The last birthday we celebrated was my cousin Tiara’s. There were desserts galore but my favorite was the pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting! :)
good golly, this is the cutest thing. I love Randy.
did you guys taste the cake? looks great. and the pups don’t know that ‘moist’ is a weird word. ;)
the last birthday I celebrated was Jason, end of June, and I made him chocolate cupcakes filled and topped with peanut butter… Mmm.
Happy Birthday, Cute Long Dog.
Yes! It tasted really good! Not too sweet since the only sweetener was the banana, but it was delicious! I was actually really proud of myself because I just made it up on a whim–no googling or recipes.
that makes it even more awesome. Lucky Pups.
How cute! Love that tongue!
It’s so hard not to celebrate the boyfriend/girlfriend anniversary.
Happy birthday Randy…..beautiful boy!!
I bet he enjoyed that cake….he couldn’t take his eyes off it!
Awwww!!! Those pics are adorable!!! My fur baby “Justice” turns 6 this month too! I will definitely make him that cake. He will LOVE it! Thanks for the idea. Happy birthday Randy!!! Now he just needs some dog beer and he’d be set!
I know! We were going to get him a keg but it was a weeknight.
Tell Randy I said Happy Ruffday!
Will do, thanks!
happy bday to the cuuuutest bassett on the internet!

Awh, I love the doggy cake! The pics are amazing. We just got back from a birthday dinner. NO cake, but we were going to get some frozen yogurt before a huge dust storm came through and locked us in the restaurant :(
Holy crazy. That blows! Haha literally….
SUPER cute!!! My little Daisy (Bichon Shihtzu Cross) is basically my fur baby so we celebrate her birthday too! :)
Last birthday we celebrated was that of a co-worker of mine. And we had Black Forest Cake – which I made!
Randy is just too cute. Okay, both of your pups are adorable! Even though it’s Randy’s birthday, I don’t want to leave anyone out! ;)
Penny says thanks :)
Hahaha, thaks for sharing, pics of Randy are always priceless, got my morning off to a jolly good start :-). And congrats to the birthday canine! Lucky dog!
A birthday cake for dogs! I’ve never heard of that before! LOL GREAT photos!! GREAT idea!
Last birthday celebrated… hmmm… probably last July (2010) when WE hosted a BBQ to celebrate our combined birthdays. We had the kids here (from out of state) and the neighbors. I don’t remember if there was cake… I’m not a big sweets person so it wouldn’t impress me if there was one here. LOL
Last b day was…………….YOURS!!!!!
next up, ME!!!!!!
WEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok I’ll go away. ice cream is calling.
WEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! I am so glad I get to celebrate with you!
whose birthday did you last celebrate? = mine, mid June!
was there cake? what kind? = no, I was sick as a dog on my bday and no one baked me a cake, i was too sick to do it, and no one bought me one either. Actually, most people forgot it even was my bday. Yeah.
But there’s always next year :)
happy birthday, randy-dog!
and happy boyfriend-girlfriend anniversary, j! (by all means keep celebrating that date!)
last bday was mom’s – we went for COFFEE!!!
great photos of randy’s cake celebration.
i wanted a slice when i saw your photos! :)
It was actually really tasty!
AWwww, HAPPY BIRTHDAY RANDY!!!! :) What a sweetheart. And don’t worry, Toly and I still celebrate that anniversary. In fact, our 8 year is coming up on Sunday and I just made reservations at The Melting Pot. Any reason to celebrate love with a fantastic meal is never dumb.
I am so glad you guys still do!
Aww what a special Day!!
Awww happy birthday Randy!! I celebrated lots of birthdays recently- both my brother and best friend’s! And my best friend’s cake was seriously to die for. It was Tiffany boxed shaped and super adorable.
Happy Birthday to Randy!!! That is so sweet of you to make them a cake and it looks like he loved it!
We actually celebrated my sister’s birthday last night — today is the official day. She turns 21 so my parents took us all out to eat last night since she’ll be busy getting drunk tonight!
Hey Janetha-
this post is adorable! <3
I have a question about something totally unrelated, though! I know you used to go the sugar free route, and I was wondering if you notice any difference in your energy levels or other areas of health, or in cravings… I've always debated going free of processed sugars, but… well, have sadly been lazy and all too tempted!
Any thoughts of going back??
When I did no added sugar, I had a flatter belly. I had no cravings for sweets (after the second day). I felt better. My skin was better. I didn’t get headaches. I want to go back to a no added sugar diet sometime soon.. but I have been addicted to popsicles and ice cream lately. I need to just suck it up and stop with all the sugar because I know I feel better when I don’t have a ton of it. That said, I have cut back on sugar a TON since before that no sugar stint. I only eat added sugars if they are supposed to be added–like in ice cream and cookies, not in bread, jarred savory sauces, etc.
Happy Birthday to Randy! Oh he is so cute! He has the best mom and dad ever : )
Love the cake and even with a candle, got to do it right with the candle for sure!
I love the commenting spree you were on yesterday too! Love u!! I missed you, know your really busy, so it means a lot when you come by and say hi on my blog or facebook : )
xoxo
I always let your posts build up and then read them all at once because I can’t bear to mark them as read!

Happy Birthday Randy! What a cute way to celebrate his birthday! Love the cake! :)
The last birthday I celebrated was for my friend at work’s birthday. I got her an amazing chocolate cake from my favorite local bakery. She loved it.
Happy Birthday Randyman!!!!!
That picture is HILARIOUS. Excellent capture :-)
Happy birthday Randy-Roo!
Happy Birthday Randy!
Last birthday I celebrated? Mine & no, there wasn’t cake. There was a chocolate sea salt caramel and homemade pretzels though!
This is so adorable. I’ve never seen anyone go all out like this for a dog birthday
Well.. when you don’t have any offspring, you gotta treat your dogs like your kiddos! And I don’t plan on offspring ANY time soon. Ew.
SOOOOOOOOOO cute. Happy Birthday Randy!!!! Love the cake. I am totally making this for Frank’s next birthday. We celebrated my cousins birthdays this weekend- red velvet cake!
I celebrated my in-laws anniversary, does that count? My husband and I surprised them with a mini wedding cake…bought from a local grocery store the morning of! It was buttery and delicious!

Cute! Happy Birthday puppy!
happy happy birthday randy dog!!!
This is so awesome- I am totally making this cake for my guys! I paid an arm and a leg for a doggie cake for their birthday (they are littermates) last winter! But it was so cute… http://lauren-beach.blogspot.com/2010/12/birthday-photos.html
I have to say too- I love your blog!! There are so many parallels in our lives, it’s nuts! If you and Marshall ever get the urge to visit the East Coast, we’ve got a place for you to crash just outside of DC and Baltimore. Thanks for all the great posts every day- I read them every morning while eating breakfast. :)
AH! I loved that post! Ahahahaha Your dogs rule. Thanks for sharing that. And thanks for your comment and for reading <3
I love that you make your dogs birthday cakes. He looks so cute and happy! Happy Birthday Randy!
Randy! He’s still young enough for me to marry though :)
Hope you aren’t planning on kids. He has no balls.
Happy Birthday Randy Dog!!!! What a cutie pie! I have to make that cake for my two doxies, they love peanut butter! It look like Randy and Penny really enjoyed it! :)
I seriously had a smile on my face through this whole post! Happy birthday Mr Randy!! :)
The last birthday I celebrated was my Mom’s… we didn’t have cake, but we did go to a health food store for lunch and brought her some gifts. The last cake i ate was Sat at my SIL’s wedding. SO FREAKIG GOOD. My peice was red velvet with some strawberry cream inside and then white (not too sweet frosting). Def the best cake I’ve ever had at a wedding… maybe even ever.
Best cake ever?! Must have been AMAZING.
Just found your blog a little while back after your guest post on Peanut Butter Fingers…. Happy 6th to your pup! Super cute!

YEs, they can! As long as there are all dog-friendly ingredients. IE: no sugar, chocolate, etc
